ripples by the lake
Wayanad is a green paradise nestled among the mountains of the Western Ghats, forming the border world of the greener part of Kerala. Clean and pristine, enchanting and hypnotizing, this land is filled with history and culture. Design should respond to the culture and landscape of the Western Ghats. The requirement was a well-equipped design accommodating not more than 200 rooms with supporting activity areas such as multi- cuisine restaurants, gym, spa, banquet halls and 150 car parking.
SITE The site is 4.5-acre plantation surrounded by thick natural vegetation. Site has a natural slope of 1:8. At the foot of the slope, is a small seasonal paddy field, often flooded during the rainy season. On average Kerala receive 300-400cm rainfall every year. The design proposes the creation of an artificial lake at the valley. The lake will recharge on its own every monsoon and will provide for the entire neighborhood during harsh summer. Furthermore, if small channels are drawn from this lake, it can irrigate a wide region. the presence of such a water body ensures that the ground water table is recharged around the year. from the marketing point of view, the lake will create a stunning view and the entire hotel is oriented in such a way that it taps most of it. it is an investment which will double the returns both economically and by revitalizing the valley.

Building with the natural terrain, enabled the building to nestled into the topography. The rooms are serene allowing for picture postcard views the scenery. The luxury suite is located beneath the cantilevered deck providing guests with expansive views of the valleys and water. All the elements integrated into the concept, from the surroundings, the landscape, the views, the architecture, the interiors, the pool, to the Jacuzzis, have been designed with the aim of building a hotel with special charm. The purest, silent and tranquil environment to achieve avoidance: its true added value. Seeking a direct, physical and visual contact with the environment, which is integrated through large windows laid out on the facade. Being a multi-functional project, both hotel and convention center should integrate well into the site. And at the same time, functions like stand-alone entities. service preferences are: multiple service circulation routes integrated service cores ample parking Design offer all the comforts of a luxury hotel in the middle of nature, as well as innovating with a modular architecture integrated with the landscape, through its 10 independent suites with lounge bar and panoramic pool.
RENDERED SECTIONAL VIEW
The building is oriented towards the lake to make the most out of the vista. The slope of the site helped to create layered design with multiple open spaces and gardens. Roofs are lined with thick vegetation, which helps in blending in with the nature and reduces the heating load on the building. Design accommodates 180 rooms segregated as suites, deluxe rooms, executive doubles and standard rooms. Two multi- cuisine restaurants, three banquet halls, semi-open party space with pool + bar, viewing decks, separate service wings for food processing, water treatment and other engineering departments. The highlight of the project are the 10 lake-front presidential villas, with dedicated services. Villas are connected by a raised wooden walkway. Each villa is equipped with two bedrooms, a kitchen, a living area, Jacuzzi and an open pool. The lake-front landscape is screened using vegetation to provide privacy for each villa, at the same time providing a 2300 viewing angle towards the lake and the terrain

The house, without any predefined program, allows simple, elemental human existence. The scattered units emulate stars in the sky, making the house a constellation on the surface of the earth but reaching out. A continuous open space, flowing along these units is formed. Each person perceives the house differently, making it an extension of their selves. Purity of existence is achieved through purity of architecture. By not imposing itself on the user, the house gives him/her an essential freedom to become whole. Live under the stars. The human race is a mechanism devised by the universe to try and experience itself. Look up. The sky is a mirror.

bridging life under bridge
BEST PRESENTATION AWARD TOP TEN SHORTLISTED ENTRY NASA - UNIVERSITY OF WESTMINSTER TROPHY 2015
We Indians have a high tolerance to filth. We only care for our own personal space and belongings. We are the root cause for deteriorating our public spaces and yet we blame authorities for not taking appropriate actions. We need to take responsibility for our own actions. If there is one thing that is to be learned from this exercise, it is to stop thinking and to get to work and the rest will follow.
SITE The CH flyover is located at the heart of Calicut city. Built in 1982 the CH flyover was named after the then chief minister C.H. Mohammed Koya. The bridge is situated in a prime location in the city, right beside the Paragon hotel, which in itself is a landmark in Calicut. In addition, there are numerous “fooding joints like milk sarbat and some cake shops in close proximity to the location. Government offices like the Income tax office, the Excise office and the office of the registrar lie adjacent to the bridge. The site is a small disused space beneath the bridge, which is meant to be a pedestrian crossing. It is in stark contrast to its surroundings. It currently houses a small tea stall on one side, while the other site has accumulated a large amount of waste over the years. The site is also used as a u-turn by vehicles during peak hours. This creates a lot of congestion in the adjoining areas as well as some problems for the tea stall owner Babu. The site has immense potential to bring about change, as it is in a hotspot in the city, adjacent to a widely used road way.
People, in general, will turn a blind eye to any civic messages. But they have an inborn respect for their culture. Hence our painting will not only stop them from dumping waste and sticking posters, but also motivate them to keep the place clean.
The landscape has been done with a sole intention to discourage future misuse of the space. The work include donated plants from local households and bricks from a demolished wall nearby.
The proposal for proper seating was met with averse response from the locals. The site, before its transformation was a drinking and sleeping spot for vagabounds. So the seating area was conceived in a way that would allow people only to be seated.
BABUETTAN’S TEA STALL
Babu Janardhanan has been an integral part of the flyover since its inception. Stories about a fire in the 90s and of how the surroundings developed are still vivid in his memory. The city has developed and the people have changed, but Babuettan and his tea stall remain the same to this day. Every morning he follows the daily ritual of cleaning the space in the immediate vicinity of his shop. But in the last three decades, the thought of mending his crumbling tea cart never crossed his mind. The project aimed and succeeded in revamping his tea cart and this has shown a tremendous increase in customers in the successive days.
The paintings of iconic Calicut based artists and writers, as well as those of the famous landmarks are meant to instill a feel of Calicut’s rich heritage and culture.
We were asked to document our progress and compile it into 3minute short video. The presentation, both print and visual received special mention from the jury and was awarded as the ‘Best Presentation’
SCAN HERE FOR THE LINK Cleaning up is a week’s work, but the main hurdle is its maintenance. For more than 30 years, the dark and shady underpass acted as a beacon attracting all sorts of anti-social elements. This area casts a shadow on the otherwise well-developed neighborhood. As the phrase ‘Tragedy of the Commons’ denotes, no one takes any personal interest over the upkeep of the public will. But then there were a few who tried and failed, maybe because they lacked the vision or the means. This space, despite connecting two busy streets, had people choosing to walk around it, just to avoid it. Our vision is to transform this space to the best of our ability, and to ensure its maintenance in the future by legally assigning custodianship to local stakeholders (in this case, Babuettan) with formal consent from the concerned authorities.
