VENETO CLUB ABN 44 004 843 752 NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30 APRIL 2004 NOTE 1: STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANT ACCOUNTING POLICIE
S
This financial report is a special purpose financial report prepared in order to satisfy the financial report preparation requirements of the Corporations Act 2001. The directors have determined that the company is not a reporting entity. The Veneto Club is a public company limited by guarantee, incorpor
ated and domiciled in Australia.
This financial report has been prepared in accordance with requirem ents of the Corporations Act 2001, and the following applicable Accounting Standards and Urgent Issues Group Consensus Views: AASB 1002: Events Occuring After Reporting Date AASB 1018: Statement of Financial Performance AASB 1025: Application of the Reporting Entity Concept and Other Amendments AASB 1031: Materiality AASB 1034: Financial Report Presentation and Disclosures AASB 1040: Statement of Financial Position UIG Abstract 35: Disclosure of Contingent Liabilities No other Accounting standards, Urgent Group Consensus Views or other authoritative pronouncements of the Australian Accounting Standards Board have been applied. The report is also prepared on an accruals basis and is based on historic costs and does not take into account changing money values or, except where specifically stated, current valuations of non-current assets.
The following material accounting policies, which are consistent with the previous period unless otherwise stated, have been adopted in the preparation of this report: a. Property, Plant and Equipment Each class of property, plant and equipment are carried at cost or fair value less, where applicable, any accumulated depreciation. Property Freehold land and buildings are measured on the fair value basis, being the amount for which an asset could be exchanged between knowledgeable willing parties in an arm's length transaction. Plant and Equipment Plant and equipment are measured on the cost basis. Depreciation All assets, excluding freehold land are depreciated on a straight line
basis over their useful lives to the company.
VENETO CLUB ABN 44 004 843 752 NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30 APRIL 2004 NOTE 1: STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANT ACCOUNTIN
G POLICIES
b. Leases Leases of fixed assets, where substantially all the risks and benefits incidental to the ownership of the asset, but not legal ownership, are transferred to the company, are classified as finance leases. Finance leases leases are capitalised, recording an asset and a liability equal to the present value of the minimum lease payments, including any guaranteed residual values . Leased assets are depreciated on a straight line basis over their estimated useful lives where it is likely that the entity will obtain ownership of the asset, or over the term of the lease. Lease payments are allocat ed between the reduction of the lease liability and the lease interest expense for the period. Lease payments for operating leases, where substa ntially all the risks and benefits remain with the lessor , are charged as expenses in the periods in which they are incurred.
c. Inventories Inventories are measured at the lower of cost and net realisable value. Costs are assigned on a first-in-firstout basis and include direct materials, direct labour , and an appropriate proportion of variable and fixed overhead expenses. d. Income Tax In September 1995 the Veneto Club obtained a private ruling from the Australian Taxation Office indicating that the net income earned in the financial year ended 30 April 1994 was exempt from income tax under Section 23(g)(iii) of the Income Tax Assessment Act 1936. The directors are of the opinion that the incom e of the financial year ended 30 April 2004 is exempt because the Veneto Club has met the same requirements that enabled it to qualify for exemption in the financial year ended 30 April 1994. 2004

President's Report
Maintenance at the club is at its highest due to the fact that club is aging. The repairs are constant in all areas, but in particular the kitchen where equipment is very expensive. Lighting, Air Conditioning, Boilers, Carpet and general refurbishment really need to be on a high priority list. This year we established a new group known as our Maintenance Volunteers, this "group" has certainly reduced the burden of costs to the club in every area Fury Bortolotto possible. Voluntary Labour is a very rare commodity and I truly thank all these people. The tireless efforts of the ladies auxiliary and their helpers this year have enabled them to donate thousands of dollars to various charities. The work carried out throughout the club, such as preparation of rooms, Sunday night dinner, barbecues, and the many personal touches made to make the club look its best has been a great contribution. I thank Paula Perruzzo, her committee and helpers for their endless energy and passion. On a financial note last year as treasurer I said we just need to get it right, a task, which isn't easy. May I add that the storm of the past six years is not over yet although small signs of improvements are there. Again, the reliance on gaming is a large factor. The gaming revenue has declined which places us in a position to work harder in an endeavour to get our formula right for success. These problems have not discouraged, in fact they have made us more aware of the difficulties we have to achieve our goals. I emphasize the need for all members to encourage their sons and daughters to frequent our club, changes are happening in an attempt to meet their needs. What is needed is to maintain a balance between the needs of the Senior members and the needs of our younger members. This is what will determine the future of our club. The trials we do don't necessarily mean one way or the other, but it certainly is a necessary exercise to allow us to go forward. Finally I thank all my committee, sub committee chairpersons and their committee, finance committee, volunteers, helpers, our manager and duty managers, staff, sponsors and all that have contributed to the enjoyment through the activates at the Veneto club.
yt
Dear Members This is my first year as President of the V.C. and a great deal of changes have occurred beginning with the level of numbers in committee and the appointment of the new General Manager Michael Farrell. We began with the aim of bringing back our youth, without depriving the activities of the senior members of the club and addressing the day-to-day activities that bring business to the club. We have achieved great success with the younger families with sporting ties to Junior Soccer, tennis and gym. We successfully hosted the Marostica Pageant with the collaboration of our member and friends and the people from Marostica. I believe a great deal of cultural mix was achieved and the club and member benefitted in many ways and I thank the people involved. "Una Notte Sotto Le Stelle" at Christmas was one of the best we have ever had with a large number of young families attending to make for an extremely enjoyable evening. I believe a great deal was achieved with the collaboration of the Associations of the Veneto Region, which saw the birth of the "Sagra: Festa di San Marco" the patron of the Veneto region, this proved that we can be united as one, the "Veneti" of Melbourne. I thank the Association Presidents and their committee for their support as this event will be ongoing and become bigger and better. This year we have taken steps to have larger involvement with our partners the Bulleen Zebras and Junior Soccer committees by working together to encourage a more positive involvement by these three committees to develop smart ways to grow programs that all can benefit from. With the new development of soccer in Victoria we are placed in a good position for the year 2005, good luck to players, presidents and committees and thanks to the people behind the scenes. This new year we have introduced Gold, Silver and Bronze member packages, the membership and joining fee remain the same but we have added extra value to these type of membership packages to encourage members to use our facilities at a discounted rate (gym, tennis squash and bocce) and the success of our loyalty program and the reward which give credits back to member who frequent and use the club on a regular basis.
Fury Bortolotto President.

First Vice President's Report It is with pleasure that I put in a brief report, after my first twelve months of serving in the Committee. We are endeavoring to make in roads in trying to get younger people frequenting the Club and using its facilities, as well as trying to keep our members happy. The challenge of achieving the young to attend our club is more difficult than what I originally had thought, but nevertheless, we should continue to try and facilitate facilities for them to enjoy and use. I strongly believe we still have a venue that is well located, has great sporting facilities and is a good venue for people to socialize and enjoy. The Committee and Management are continually striving to attract the right functions and entertainment that will attract a broad mix of our community to our Club. I thank you for the opportunity given to me at the

Dental Implants. What are they, and are they for you? Once, dentures and bridges were the only way to replace missing teeth. Now dental implants provide the ideal way to achieve long-lasting replacement of missing teeth. They eliminate the problems of dentures moving about and they offer the closest thing in dentistry today to a natural tooth replacement. Dental implants can replace one tooth, a group of teeth, or an entire set of teeth.

Secretary's Report Dear Members, as you know the 30th April brings to a close another year in the life of our Club. I won't repeat matters which will be brought to your attention by the President and Treasurer, such as the activities and functions we had over the past twelve months or the results of the club's final audit, these will be explained to you in detail. What I would like to do however, is to wish our very dear Mario Bonis all the very best in his well earned retirement. Over the years, and in particular in the early years he was the "Heart & Soul" of our administration. Thank you Mario, we who have worked with you know the depth of your integrity, commitment and loyalty. You have always given 110%, and you were certainly always there for whoever needed your help. We don't really want to say we will miss you, because we truly hope that once you have had a good rest, you WILL come back to us and join our "regular army" of voluntary workers. We will not give you the opportunity to experience boredom on any scale. Again, thank you Mario, and remember that as you go through this transition period, you are dearly loved and respected by us all. We have been working solidly over the past few weeks to see if the Veneto Club could host this year's "Festa Della Repubblica", and finally we have been able to achieve this. I, personally, believe this has been a tremendous achievement in more ways than one. The one thing I have dreamed of for years is seeing the coming together of the Italian Community within our boundary, and never have I experienced before the feeling of friendship and solidarity which I have experienced over the last few weeks. The "Festa della Repubblica" was almost cancelled this year, but thanks to the tenacity of some members of our Italian community who just refused to "GIVE UP", the likes of the Veneto Club, Casa D'Abruzzo, Veronesi nel Mondo, Calabria Club, Sardinia Club, Italian Social Club Werribee, Comunita' di Noto, Amici del Presepe, Toscana Club, Figli D'Italia, Tony De Camillo (Gruppo Culturale
Ketti Pezzin - Hon. Secretary
Italiano), Cay. Salvatore Stagliano and John Accirito (Armi D'Onore), and Poni Poselli (Compare) we were able to proceed. This was the initial group who were determined not to let this great tradition die, this was the group who "pulled in" (for want of a better word) other members of the community and funds to make it work. And, as I said before, what a magic experience it has been for me, because there we were, not Veneti. not Calabresi, not Siciliani, not Abruzzesi, but simply ITALIANS working together for the same ideals and goals. This is truly a "Festa" organised by the people for the people I feel very privileged to have had the opportunity of meeting this wonderful group, and indeed to be working with them. They have given another dimension to my Italian heritage. At this point, I would like to sincerely thank my President, Fury Bortolotto and my committee colleagues. It has been a difficult and worrying year for us all trying to curtail overheads and increase functions. We obviously still have a long way to go and I wish the new committee all the very very best. To all the Veneto Club Sub-Committees, Ladies Auxiliary, Voluntary Workers and Associations of the Veneto Region go my deepest thanks and gratitude. You are the quiet achievers of our club, but let it be known, that without your support we would not be able to survive. You are an example and credit to our community. To all our members of staff, and in particular those who have assisted me greatly not just in the past twelve months, but over a period of many years, Tony Squillacioti, Marina Mandoulidis, Florence Taufer, Mario Bonis, and recently Michael Farrell and Mary Moro go my sincere thanks. We are indeed extremely

grateful for your loyalty and commitment. To all the members of the Veneto Club, thank you for your trust and the loyal support you have given me over the years, but above all, thank you for your friendship and warmth. And last but not least, what can I say to my beautiful family, Mum, Frank and my children. I know that at times you have felt as though I was not
there for you, but you always had a smile on your face, you were always there with words of encouragement and support. Thank you seems hardly enough. Ketti Pezzin Honorary Secretary.
Voi siete I'esempio it valore della nostra comunita.

diversi anni, Tony Squillacioti, Marina Mandoulidis, Florence Taufer, Mario Bonis e recentemente Michael Farrell e Mary Moro, vadano i miei sinceri ringraziamenti.
Thinking about going on theWvb •
Ringraziarvi mi sembra it meno che possa fare. Treasurer's Report Dear Members For the year ended 30/04/04,the Veneto Club has incurred a loss of $197,420. Whilst this is a reduction of $74,144(27%) on our previous years loss, it is nevertheless unsatisfactory. Our hospitality and function sales for the year have increased marginally by $97,312 (4%) however our net wages, club trading expenses, administration expenses have increased by $145,348 (9%). Of this amount $91,109 is attributed to salaries, management wages, long service leave and advertising for club staff. All these measures were implemented by the committee with a view to increasing sales and I believe that the club will benefit from these expenses in the next financial year. On the positive side our property expenses have decreased by 10% ($58,222) mainly attributable to a reduction in insurance premiums. This was partially offset by our ever present repairs and maintenance charges: These would have been higher without the efforts of our maintenance sub committee - our special thanks to them. Gaming turnover continues to reflect the industry trend and is down by $158,788 (12%) with the contribution only reducing by $19,842 (4%) due to good cost control in this area. On a more positive side our sporting facilities and club sporting activities were able to contribute $123,723 more than last year and hopefully this will continue in the future. Your Committee, Managers and staff are working very hard in reducing costs however much more needs to be done in the future. As well as cutting costs the club needs to generate more sales and I would encourage all members, their families, friends to attend more frequently and to consider using the Bistro, Sala Venezia or Sala San Marco for that special occasion perhaps even taking out the special memberships such as Gold/Silver/Bronze now on offer. Finally I would like to thank the Committee, Sub Committees, Volunteers and staff who are working extremely hard to keep the Veneto club viable. Carlo Rigoni Treasurer
Carlo Rigoni

In fine vorrei ringraziare it Comitato, i SottoComitati, i Volontari e it Personale che stanno lavorando estremamente sodo per mantenere it Veneto Club vitale. Carlo Rigoni Tesoriere

GENERAL MANAGER'S REPORT Since joining the Veneto Club as your General Manager in early December we have seen many interesting events and changes, most of which have been of a positive nature. I experienced my first "Una Notte Sotto Le Stelle" as an employee, not a guest, which I found to be exciting and enjoyable. And from all reports it was a success. The Christmas Picnic held at the Baracca was a fun day for all and successful. Christmas Day and New Year's Eve for the most part was enjoyable and successful. I do believe however, we could have performed better in relation to the menu, which was on offer for those two special events. It was decided to cancel the Australia Day Picnic, on reflection, I do believe this should have gone ahead as agreed, possibly in a different format from previous years. More thought will be given to this event next year.
Michael Farrell
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all who have supported me during the past six months and look forward to your continued support Michael Farrell General Manager.
The advent of holding the Sagra Di San Marco on the 25 April was a truly amazing success for all concerned. The positive feedback and reaction from the many people there on the day makes events like these a joy to be involved with.

There have been a number of positive changes in personnel throughout the venue with the hope of improving customer service to meet the expectations of our members and guests. Another initiative for the Veneto Club has been the introduction of a monthly Jazz night featuring the New Melbourne Jazz Band. Although the initial response was slow the night is proving to be a success. I look forward to seeing more of our members at these nights.

For the younger generation we have put in place a variety of games, which are located in the games room (located above the basketball stadium across the walkway from the sportscaster).

During the past six months the Club has improved its financial situation albeit slight. However, we do need the continued support of our members, sporting groups and associations, family and friends to continue to grow, without your support the long-term viability of the Veneto Club is made more difficult.

SPORTS CENTRE REPORT
Dear Veneto Club Members, hello and welcome to our annual Veneto Club Sports-Centre report. I'd like to take this opportunity to welcome all new members to our gym. It's wonderful to see so many people starting the year on a positive note! And what a positive 12 months the Gym and Sports Centre has had! In 2003 our Sports Centre increased 15.3% in sold memberships when compared to 2002 and increased 22.2% in total revenue when compared to 2002. 2004 is already looking like an even bigger year with the January April total revenue 51.9% higher than the same period in 2003! Thank you to all our members for such excellent results! So why is the Sports Centre doing so well? Part of the reason is our Gymnasium is known for its more relaxed and friendly environment compared to the larger and more hectic Gyms. This is due to our more personal size as well as our instructors who are always on the gym floor to help, supervise and encourage. Unlike most gym's today we still regularly evaluate our client's progress and provide them with monthly updated exercise programs. Our Instructors are essential to the on-going success of the Gymnasium and Sports Centre. The time and skill they contribute to the Gym is always
appreciated. Below is a message from two of our Instructors, Lynn-eva and Lisa. Thanks also to Frank Coluccio for the dedicated enthusiasm he has shown in the Sports Centre for so long. Frank is holidaying in Italy for two months and we wish him an exciting and safe trip! Once again I would like to extend my thanks to all our Gym members and Sports Centre hirers. Myself, Lynn-eva, Lisa and Frank are always happy to encourage, help and educate in all matters health and fitness so please do not hesitate to approach us. To all Veneto Club members who are not Gym Members yet, what's going on?!? You are very lucky to have such a fantastic Sports Centre in your own club so come in and get healthy! Call me today on 8850 5225 and make today the first day of the looking fitter, feeling better you! Wishing you all the best in healthy lifestyle. Daniel Morton
Sports Centre Manager
Hi, my name is Lisa and I u ill be working the Sunday shift whilst Frank is away on holidays. I am looking forward to meeting all the Sunday regulars and encourage you all to feel free to ask for any help and advice. I enjoy teaching regular cross-training activities for improved health and fitness for an enjoyable and high quality life. Healthy body, healthy mind! VENETO CLUB - 2003/04 Annual Report - Page 21
Hi my name is Lynn-eva and I am on shift at the Veneto Club Sports Centre on Saturday's. I have been involved in the fitness industry with "Lighten Up Personal Training" for four years. It is important to eat a variety of wholesome, clean food when exercising to attain a toned, lean body. Wholesome foods are: Fruit and vegetables, legumes, pulses, wholemeal bread, pasta and grains. White bread, pasta and rice have been stripped of vital vitamins, minerals and fibre! CLEAN. food means no extra additives, eg most deli turkey has flour added to the meat compared to roast turkey, which is 100% pure meat. VARIETY. Studies show that people who eat a wide variety offood are healthier, live longer and have a reduced risk of developing lifestyle illness. LV
-e\a
HOW MUCH FOOD? This is another story. Remember, you can find me in the Gym on Saturday's for any nutritional advice. FACT: Stressed is desserts spelt backwards. Interested in finding out how healthy your weekly eating is? Treat yourself to a free health check and take a minute to complete the "Food Variety Checklist" inserted in this page.

Executive Chef Report Dear Members, As my time of employment with the Veneto Club has reached the big one (yes, one year now) I can honestly say: WOW!! What a Club! This multi-faceted business never ends surprising me. Especially these last six months, under new direction, we seem to be reaching for new frontiers. While maintaining the identity, we are now venturing into the non-Italian speaking market. And let me tell you, at times it is hard to switch from Lasagna to Asian Stirfry!! Well, with the help of the staff around me, we are, I hope, pulling it off. I would like to take this opportunity to say Thank You to all who have given me "pointers" on all Italian matters. After all, I left Valle D'Aosta in 1979, and with the passing of my parents (who were from Vicenza e Padova), my Venetian... was...well...like Venezia: sinking!! But now, I feel like a new "Rinascimento" is on the way. It is hard for me to imagine that this club began with some Venetians, desperate to play bocce, started off with a baracca and ended with such a large business. But this has been obviously the dedication of some visionaries and now looking at the future, new staff members have been employed to help us reach the latest and forever forward moving goal. Thank You All.
Come and support our apprentices! As of July 2004, the Sala Venezia and the Galleria Bistro will be offering an exciting opportunity for all our members and their guests to sample a three course meal entirely compiled by our Apprentice Chefs. At $21.00 per person (coffee extra), this is a bargain. Show your encouragement and come along and support our up and coming "Budding" chefs.
Exciting new menus every month from now until Christmas.
Domenico Tellatin Executive Chef

Our president Dorina Di Marzio has organized some very enjoyable trips for our members, and we look forward to many more.
Dear members and friends. We have reached the first six months of the year; time goes very quickly when we are having fun. Our monthly luncheons are more enjoyable since we introduced dancing and singing. The atmosphere has improved as members bring their friends along, which in turn increases numbers. This is good for the club.
Thank you to all those members who shared our Easter luncheon. We celebrated another special day, which was Mother's Day. We hope all our mothers had a wonderful day. Kind Regards

GAMING REPORT
Dear Members For those I have not had the pleasure of meeting during my last six months as Duty Manager, let me introduce myself. My name is Mary Moro and I have been managing the Club's Gaming Room since starting at the Veneto Club. I have been involved in the Management of gaming venues for over 12 years and prior to working here I have managed gaming facilities in hotels and clubs across Melbourne. I am however no stranger to the Veneto Club, as my family have been members here since its inception with my father being one of the founding members of the Club. I therefore, have fond memories of my younger days spent in the club at various social functions. To me the club has been an important part of my life and therefore my work here is more than just a job. Being aware of the past history of the club and the culture existing within it, I am hoping to use my experience in the hospitality and gaming industries to assist the club to grow and move forward to even greater success in the future. The Veneto Clubs Gaming Room continues to be in the "Top 10" of the Tatts Service Excellence Program which measures the quality and performance of all Tatts gaming venues across the State of Victoria. This is something we should all be proud of. The gaming industry has become increasingly competitive with the introduction of non-smoking policies in gaming areas and we, like other venues, suffered some decrease in turnover initially in the first year, but this decrease has not continued this year. This is a tribute to you the members actively supporting the Club by attending our gaming room. In addition to looking after the Gaming room, I have recently taken over responsibility for functions and management looking forward to working with you the members in this role. If you have any type of business or private function you need to arrange, please do not hesitate to contact me for advice and assistance. Only supporting the Club in all aspects will allow it to grow and provide the facilities required by the members. I thank all of you for making me feel so
Maly Moro (Duty Manage')
welcome and the daily smiles and hello's make it a pleasure to come to work each day. If you have any suggestions on how we can make our Club better please do not hesitate to talk to me. Kind regards Mary Moro

From The Ladies Auxiliary Dear Members Once again your generosity this year has been overwhelming and has made it possible for the Ladies Auxiliary not only to contribute to our Special Charities as usual, but has also enabled us to make some much-needed improvements to the Sala Venezia. These will be presented to the President at the Annual Gala President's Dinner on 17th June. Working together can, and does make a difference and without your on-going support we cannot achieve any of these renovations to keep our Club looking fresh and welcoming. On behalf of the Organising Committee, very special thanks to all our volunteers, especially our Sunday Night ladies, also to the friends of the Ladies Auxiliary who never fail to make-up a table or more for our lunches and other events. Your support is sincerely appreciated. Paula Peruzzo President Ladies Auxiliary

BUILDING PRODUCTS
"QUALITY IS ESSENTIAL FOR SUCCESS" A BETTER SYSTEM - MORTA-LOK M4 1 veryone in the building industry knows how critical it is to 4 achieve the right mortar mix for the job.
T
Blue Circle Southern Cement has formulated a product to assist the building industry in achieving a higher standard in the workmanship and materials used in the construction of brick & masonry structures. Morta-lok M4 is the product which sets the standard required for mortars used in the construction industry. Morta-Lok M4 assists meeting the needs for brick and masonry mortars as set down in the Masonry Code AS 3700. History shows mortars for brickwork continue to fail owing to human error and an ignorance to meet the mortar standards in this country. Morta-Lok reduces the risk with a simple 3-1 mix ratio. Blue Circle Southern draws your attention to the successful introduction and use of Morta-Lok M4 for brickwork by one of AUSTRALIA'S LARGEST HOME BUILDERS. Morta-Lok M4 is now specified on ALL new starts. Mortar-Lok M4 is a specially formulated cement and lime blend manufactured to meet the building industry requirements when used as per directions utilising a blended
OWE cc sand in the mix, it will improve the "QUALITY CONTROL" taking the guess ui work away to achieve the correct and c° uniformed batches of mortar required to meet the Australian Standards. With the introduction of Morta-Lok M4 Builders & Tradespeople have found a significant improvement in the mortar quality in a short period. The benchmark for quality mortars has now been set for the Building Industry.
O
By recommending the use of Morta-Lok M4 these errors can be significantly reduced if not eradicated altogether. Morta-Lok M4 (grey cement) and Morta-Lok M4 Lite (off-white cement) is available at all leading sand & soil yards throughout Metropolitan Melboume and some Country Victoria outlets. One of Melbourne's leading sand producers Skye Sands has a pre-blended sand called Morta-Lok Sand which is now available.

Bulleen Zebras Soccer Club Season 2004 commenced with major changes on/off the field. The new board appointed Hall of Fame Inductee Peter 011erton, as Senior Coach, and the clubs 1998 Flag Winning Captain, Zebra legend, Eric Hollingsworth as his assistant. The Bulleen Zebras under its new management team commenced the difficult tasks in rebuilding the soccer club into a major force in season 2004 and beyond. The Club released long serving players in Danny Gnjidic, Sava Rusmir, Berkan Sakaci, Joseph Damiano and Joe Di Iorio, who had served the Club with great distinction, and the Zebras wish them well in their future playing careers. Immediately, an aggressive recruiting campaign commenced, and we were able to secure ex National League players: Peter Kakos — formally of Morwell Falcons/Heidelberg, Josip Kozic formally of Melbourne Knights/Preston, Steve Martin Formally of Carlton/Parramatta, Ross Antoniadis formally captain of Altona East, Michael Theoklitos formally of Auckland Kings/Blackpool, as well as, two young exciting footballers, Blagoja Celeski and David Petkovski. The Bulleen Zebras with all its new restructuring has become united on/off the field and, the senior team of the Zebras are playing an exciting brand of soccer. The Club is benefiting with major support watching our games at the Veneto Club Melbourne with an excess of 1,300 supporters watching the Zebras compete at our Home games on a Monday night.
At the half way mark of the year, the Bullen Zebras are currently first on the Victorian Premier League ladder with 7 wins and 2 draws. We hope that the second half of the season will be as exciting and successful as the first eleven games of our campaign, which will give the opportunity to our great supporters some satisfaction in seeing the mighty Zebras in finals action. Bulleen Zebras would like to thank all its major and key sponsors that had given their generous financial support to the mighty Zebras for season 2004, as well as, Club 75, Gold and Season Pass members, and our great vocal supporter based. Junior Soccer Report
Once again, 2004 will see Bulleen having four super league teams in 13, 14, 15 and 16 age group, and four teams in group A in 12, 13, 14 and 15 age group. A big thank you to all coaches and team managers for their great effort and dedication, but the biggest thank you must go to all our players and their parents for another great year. To any player leaving Bulleen (for what ever reason), Good Luck. Thank you for supporting Junior Soccer. Junior Committee .
Season 2003 saw another great year for junior soccer at Bulleen. Starting with our goal-kick program (it keeps getting bigger and better). What a great year for our youngsters ending with being invited to show their skills at Bob Jane Stadium during a game South Melbourne v Newcastle, what a buzz for our future stars. At sub junior level we saw 2 Under eights, 4 under nines, and 4 BULLEEN U14 under ten teams, with lots of good talent at this age . At junior level we saw our under fifteen tigers runners up in group E, putting them into super league in 2004. Under fourteen lions (supper league) and tigers both teams being south east champions with the super league team going on to win The Grandville Homes Trophy. The Under thirteens fishing sixth and third. The under twelves with the lions equal runners up (third on goal difference), and the tigers runners up out right. Three under eleven teams with the lions on top all year, only to be beaten on the last game, thus ending runners up on goal difference. The tigers and jaguars also had a great year.

VENETO SQUASH CLUB President / Treasurer: Bert Caneva Secretary / Pennant Co-Ordinator: John Coleman Club Circuit Competitions The Club competes in the Victorian Squash Racquets Association, Club Circuit, which is affiliated with the Victorian Squash Federation. The Club Circuit holds two Pennant competitions each year. The Spring Pennant runs from August to November and the Autumn Pennant from February to June. The Veneto Club's Annual Reporting period of May to April thus includes part of three pennant Seasons. Autumn 2003 Pennant Competition The Club competed with four teams in the VSRA Club Circuit Autumn Pennant Competition, which concluded late in June. Best performed was the D-1 Grade team which was narrowly defeated in the final after leading the competition throughout the season. A disappointing result, but a fine season by all concerned.

BOCCE Report.
Silvio Gatto Chairman Sotto Comitato Bocce

Hello Everyone, Since my first report in December 2003 the Tennis Committee has worked very hard to ensure that the club runs smoothly. We have tried to meet everyone's requirements from a tennis club. Be that a social game of tennis with family and friends, or interclub competition or coaching for themselves or their children. We have also endeavored to lift the image of the club and I believe a true measure of a club's standing in the Tennis community is its ability to be able to field a team in the top competition in the state. Therefore, it is with great pleasure that I can inform you that the Veneto Tennis Club now has a team in the State Grade Pennant and a team in the Grade A Pennant Competition. This has eventuated thanks to the hard work of Kane Dewhurst and all the members Runners-Up Section 2 Girls: Jessica Crema, Elaina Kefalianos, of the coaching staff at VIDA. Men's Tuesday Night Competition We had 12 teams in the Spring 2003 Tuesday Night Competition of which 7 teams were in the Veterans' section. It just shows that the average age of our members is getting older and so, we need to encourage more younger people to join up and play. Unfortunately only 2 teams, Vets Section 3 and 4, made the finals but both lost. In the Autumn 2004 season we entered 12 teams again and we are now approaching the finals. It looks like about half will make the finals. Best of luck.

Belli and Brutti Competition At the end of the Spring 2003 season, we again held our famous in-house competition where our chief handicapper, Phillip Price and his scribe Raymond Barro did a great job. Thank you to Romeo Crema, Val Di Felice and Philip Mc Crone who organized the B.B.Q. and drinks, for making it an enjoyable night. We had a "dark horse" enter the competition and that team took out the major prize. I will have to ask the handicapper to reassess this team before the next event. MAROSTICA LA PARTITA A SCACCHI This honour to coordinate the volunteers was bestowed on me during August 2003, when a delegation from Marostica arrived at the Veneto Club for a preliminary meeting. The meeting resulted in a sequence of events where both parties expressed various points of view, but most importantly, the decision to stage Marostica was made quickly and a dedicated work ethic between the two countries, ensured the project would be a success. LET THE SHOW BEGIN! I went to work with a dedicated team of enthusiasts Marostica is coming to Melbourne and let us make it the biggest and most extraordinary Venetian Show Melbournians have ever seen!!!! The town of Marostica's main square is transformed into a chessboard. The traditional game of chess, with living pieces dressed in period costumes, takes place bi-annually. The story itself dates back to 1454 when Marostica belonged to the Venetian Republic. It happened that two noblemen, Rinaldo D'Angarano and Vieri da Vallonara, fell in love with the beautiful Lionora, daughter of Taddeo Parisio, Lord of the Marostica's castle. As was the custom in that time, they challenged each other to a duel to win the hand of Lionora. The Lord, not wanting to make an enemy of either suitor, or lose them in a dangerous duel, forbade the encounter in conformity with Cangrande della Scala's Edict. He decided the two rivals should play a chess game. Lionora would take the winner as her husband and the loser would in any case join his family, marrying Oldrada, the younger sister.
The rehearsals were held at the Veneto Club, after which they were conducted at the Vodafone Arena over a number of nights. Commencing work with close to 200 volunteers was one of my greatest challenges. I cannot personally thank each and everyone of them in this article, but to the team of people who assisted me from bus duties, costumes, to general office work, or just offering support when times got tough. I thankyou all. To Ricardo, choreographer extraordinaire (even without the Andalusians), a big thank-you in assisting with making this dream come alive we finally got there!
LET THE GAME BEGIN! The love story in Marostica, with over 400 characters, begins. Volunteers from all walks of life, with ages ranging from five to 80 years, commenced registration for the pageant. Costume fittings was a mammoth task, followed by rehearsals soon after, with assistance from Riccardo Pietropaoli (without his help I would have been lost). Ricardo is a fine example of a true showman who assisted with the choreography for the Australian cast. VENETO CLUB - 2003/09 Annual Report - Page 43
My wonderful volunteers. The show would not have been possible without you. From the bottom of my heart, thank-you again for your dedication and commitment to the pageant, your support, your love and your kind words will be eternally treasured by me. Let us now keep the dream alive, move forward with the fantasy and romance, and the wonderful memories of the 1454 romance in Marostica and the game of chess that decided the destiny of Vieri, Lionora, Rinaldo and Oldrada. I would also want to thank Michael Farrell (General Manager) and his team of dedicated staff and to all of you, the members, for giving me the opportunity to serve another rewarding year on the Board - thank-you also for your words of encouragement, your friendship over time and most importantly your loyalty. My best of wishes to you all! TIZIANA PREMOSELLI Director Veneto Club - Melbourne

All'assemblea generale in febbraio erano presenti pia di 200 soci su 340 iscritti.

Padre Giuliano Cavarzan, segretario A.T.M.

Cooper's Creek Gippsland The Trevisani, by Diana Ruzzene Grollo This book is an historical/ sociological account of Cooper's Creek Gippsland and its Italian community. In the first few chapters the author gives a general history of the area and its natural resources. In the remaining chapters, which are the bulk of her research, she concentrates on the years between 1930 and 1950. The research demonstrates the hardship of the mostly Italian Trevisani men's work in the lime quarry, kilns and wood-cutting, at the White Rock Lime Company. In the period of the Economic Depression the men gravitated to find work in this harsh environment so that a cluster of Italian -Trevisani- men, developed. The author brings to the foreground this group of Trevisani migrants and describes their daily life of work, the comradeship, the alienation, the subsequent arrival of their families, the practice of their culture and the fear Whilst, at during the war years. present there is little evidence of the Cooper's Creek and the Jubilee townships, the author brings to life the bustling towns and its people who lived there in that period. The book is well illustrated with many beautiful a work photographs, which are reproduced in sepia to give the character of those times and create h photograp of art. Effectively, there are two books. One is the written text and the other is a type of at worked and album. These are intertwined to recreate the stories of the many people who lived the White Rock Lime Company, in Cooper's Creek and Jubilee, Gippsland Victoria.
