Relazione del Presidente

President's Report Dear Members, After one year as president of the Club I have come to realise how valuable this Club is to all those who frequent it and how our Club needs to be professionally managed. The last 12 months have been a very interesting time for me at the Club. It has been a time of learning and organising, a time for meeting new people and establishing new relationships both here and overseas. The time has now come to rebuild something new. We have managed to control and minimise some expenditures and a lot more will be done in this area. Professional office staff have been employed and with 'Committee Concerns' a number of new ideas for which already positive results are starting to emerge. No major work has been conducted in the building, however, several small yet effective projects have been carried out. Major building alterations are about to commence and the relevant plans are now available for all members to comment on and to view. In my opinion, these alterations will give our Club a new image attracting more people, especially from the younger generation. Unfortunately, our soccer team, is not doing too well at present, however the Club is looking for new sponsors. The sports centre, tennis, squash and the gym etc. are well organised and are looking for new members. A warm thank you is due to all of the following people for their ongoing effort and collaboration: Club Committee Ladies Auxiliary The Manager and Office Staff Restaurant Chef and Staff All Sub Committee Bar Personnel And all other members and voluntary workers who are always ready to lend a hand when needed.

Grazie Giancarlo Peruzzo

VENETO CLUB - MELBOURNE - Relazione Annuale 2002

From the First Vice President Dear Members Again, we are at the end of a financial year. I had the pleasure to work with some respectable people but others have really disappointed me. It is unfortunate that Pinocchio and his creator "Geppetto" are only a tale, perhaps "Geppetto" could have carved some wooden heads to replace those of a few I had to deal with, possibly with an outburst of intelligence. In the kitchen field, of which I am the Liaison Officer, considering the situation at the end of May of the previous year, I can assure you, the push forward has been positive, it is evident in the continuous increase of attendance and inquiries from outside, this is thanks to the professionalism of our Catering Manager Mario Angelucci and our Chef Piero Prestopino with his team, working in close collaboration between themselves and me. Friends, as already said in the past, our Club needs new blood, opened mind and futuristic vision, we need our young generations, both in the leadership and amongst us. I hope this year the money will be put where the mouth is. I wish the General Assembly are able to make a good selection of future Directors. Let's make a comparison; compare a future directing group to a basket of apples You have to pick; some are nice and healthy, a few a bit bruised, one maybe has a worm and eventually one begun to rot, what can you hope from that basket. It is a big responsibility and it is your responsibility. Our results: we were just able to stop the downslide, but we have been working on future projects and necessary decisions. I feel at ease amongst the people of my origin and, if given the opportunity I will work hard to regain trust in our Club, although, time is precious, and unless we will have a group working together in good harmony and with common interest in mind, I will not waste my time. My thanks to our catering Manager Mario Angelucci, our chef Piero Prestopino and all the kitchen staff, for their excellent work, all waiters, bar tenders, the Ladies Auxiliary, past and present, for their ever important contribution to our system. I have much

Domenico Alberti

appreciated the friendly cooperation of the office staff, Phil, Tony, Marina, Florence and Mario. I am grateful to the President G. Peruzzo, who does always his best, my committee colleagues, in particular to those who tried to make a difference, to all of you Members who gave your opinions one way or another, I wish all of you and our Club a prosperous and harmonious future. Domenico Alberti

Domenico Alberti

VENETO CLUB - MELBOURNE - Relazione Annuale 2002

Grazie Secondo Vice-Presidente Renzo Zanella

VENETO CLUB - MELBOURNE - Relazione Annuale 2002

SECRETARY'S REPORT It's a little difficult to focus on business matters when you are a 1000 km from civilisation, but I know that I owe it to the members to keep them informed of the club's activities over the past 12 months. It has been a very good working year, (and with the exception of one Committee Member in my particular regard). It's also been a year of great satisfaction. The first issue this Committee was faced with was to resolve some "in-house" problems, and I am sure the members have been able at some time or another to experience some of the results such as the improvements in the "Sala Venezia" and "Sala San Marco" just to name a few. Obviously, my thanks must go to Mario Angelucci who has given his all. In general all areas within the club are functioning extremely well. The biggest concerns are the overheads. No matter which way you pull, it seems almost impossible to arrest this problem. Bear in mind though that the club is almost 30 years old, and the maintenance is phenomenal. Current membership stands at: Life Members - 15 Foundation Members - 394 Ordinary Members - 888 Associate Members - 668 Honorary Members - 44 - 2 500 Gaming Members It is essential that any member wishing to nominate for Committee bear in mind that apart from administrative knowledge, he or she must also have "heaps" of time available to cope with the many situations, which seem to occur on a daily basis. In which case, family support is also critical for the many times, which you simply have to drop everything and run. To be a member of the board it is also essential (as per Gaming Commission requirements) that a total investigation of your personal and business records be carried out. In conclusion, there are many I would like to thank and I will begin with our President John Peruzzo. John has given heart and soul to this wonderful club of ours. He is knowledgeable and extremely dedicated. He will never get it "completely" right but then, no one else will either

believe me, and whilst he is at the "helm" you could not wish for a better representative for our community. As I stated in the beginning, to my Committee colleagues, with the exception of one, goes my sincere gratitude. You have truly been a great team and it has been a privilege working with you. To ALL our Sub Committees, Associations of the Veneto Region, we thank you. To the Ladies Auxiliary, and in particular the past President Ines Rostolis and her team, what a great job you have done over the years! To the new President, Paola Peruzzo and her group of ladies, we wish you all the very best. Know that you have the support of the Committee at all times, and together we will achieve. To every member of staff thank you! I particularly wish to thank Tony Squillacioti, Marina Mandoulidis, Florence Taufer, and Anthony Canil. These wonderful people form "The Team" with which I have worked over the past 12 months. They have given 101 percent, and on too numerous occasions to mention, have truly worked over and above the call of duty. To our members, what can I say? A million thanks for your loyal support. You are the "backbone" of this club; encourage your children to continue for one day they will be our future. And last but not least, thank you to my wonderful family whom never at any time have put pressure on me, and who have always understood how deeply I have been committed to the Veneto Club.

VENETO CLUB -MELBOURNE Relazione Annuale 2002

TREASURER'S REPORT Dear Member of the Veneto Club It was the intention to achieve a breakeven result financially, this is clearly not possible when we consider how many functions, events that we have at our club, where we make a loss. Our Gross Margin Food and Function $18 010.00 (in 2002) has fallen, from a 29% margin (in 1995) and 33% in (1990). This has occurred simply, because cost of sales and wages has gone up and we do not want to pass on these increases. We (you) still want $30.00 nights, still want top food, top service top entertainment but stuck on $30.00. How can we be making any money, for example, when on Sunday night San Marco we average between $1 200.00 to $1 500.00 gross. This years Bar Margin $33 010.00 (in 2002) was $45 010.00 (in 1995) and 43% (in 1990). Daniel Morton well done, excellent effort in the Multi Purpose Sport Centre. The Gymnasium Income has been increased to $48 125.00 up from $25 129.00

last year. The gymnasium attracts a large part of the new member admission the dollar value of which (the joining fee) is included in Membership Admission Fees. In the Gaming Department, Anthony Canil, well done, whilst it was anticipated that Gaming Income might drop, the overall Net Profit increased by $ 38 823.00. The balance Sheet still remains healthy and hope that we can improve further in 2003. Our President's, effort, as regard to time he has put in, I think has been fantastic, perhaps his improvement ideas did not go as quickly as he would have hoped, but it is a slow wheel at our club, remembering that it took 4 to 5 years to build the Multi-purpose Centre from idea to completion. Finally thanks to the Office Staff for their efforts! Luciano Benetti Treasurer

Veneto Club Ladies Auxiliary I have been the newly appointed President of the Ladies Auxiliary for only a very short time, but have quickly come to realize that it is not an easy task.

The New Committee: (Left to Right) Anna Cattapan, Florence Taufer (Secretary), Maria Bortolotto, Paula Peruzzo (President), Emma Agnoletti (Treasurer), Carmela Cementon (Vice-President), Monique Alberti.

The new Committee can organize functions, raffles, fundraising events and volunteer our time in various areas of the Club's activities, but without the support of you, the Veneto Club Members, our efforts cannot achieve success. I would especially like to extend my gratitude to all those volunteers who work so hard and cheerfully (and have done so for many years) in the Sala San Marco every Sunday evening: your efforts are greatly appreciated. A special thank you also to the Committee Members for their support and understanding in my new role and we look forward to seeing you all at the various functions to be organized by the Ladies Auxiliary. Come along, catch up with old friends, meet some new people and, above all, have an enjoyable time. A special mention here for the outgoing President, Ines Rostolis, who, since 1979, has been a tireless worker for the Ladies Auxiliary: Ines, Thank You. Sincerely Paula Peruzzo President Ladies Auxiliary

Members and finally all other supporters who have been with the Club for many years.

We were all of the understanding that the team was reasonably good, but after a very slow start and even worse half season where we have shown no improvement, we unfortunately decided to part company with our coach Joe Mullen. This was done in an effort to try and prevent the Club from relegation. We have employed Mr. Peter 011erton as Coach for the remainder of this season, and we hope that this move will bring the players closer together and give them confidence to succeed. Sean Keogh will continue as his assistant.

I would also like to thank the Soccer Committee for all the hard work & effort that they put in week after week to ensure that the club continues. They are: Messrs. Ron Lammanda, Joe Sala, Egon Schille, Alfonso Pozzebon, Mario Marino, Alex Lorenzi, M/s Pauline Macca, and the Main Committee Liason Officer Mr. Celio Stocco.

The Under 21 Team which is made up of players from our National Youth League team, is coached by Mr. Jim Gotzilianis and should provide the Club with further talent to represent our Senior Team in the future. The Bulleen Zebras Soccer Club could not exist without the generous Financial support of the Veneto Club, and our major sponsors: Grocon Pty.Ltd, Grollo Australia, Mirabella Emporium, Covo Sport and the Barro Group. We extend our appreciation to them, and in particular to The President and Committee of the Veneto Club. Also we wish to thank our many other sponsors: CityWatch Security, LePine Funerals, Marchetti Smallgoods, Printing Edge Melbourne, Adriatic Furniture, Raine & Home real Estate, Finadri Window Instalations, Bergamin Paving Co., Crema Camillo, Bertocchi Smallgoods, Australian United Insurance Agencies, Versace Classic V2, Dolce Pasticceria, Red Telecommunications Co. P/L, Bulleen Plaza Meats, George James Lawyers, Hamperworld, Mattioli Developments, all Club 75

A special thank you to all the Ladies & Gentlemen who work tirelessly in the Kiosk, Gates, Ground on the match day. These volunteers work silently as a team to achieve the demands of the Club, and are to be congratulated. Again thanks to everyone who supports our Club, and I hope you will all get behind our Coaching Staff, the Players, and help us achieve better results for the remainder of season 2002. Cay. Rino Tessarotto.

Bulleen Lions Juniors Dear members As coordinator of soccer for all Juniors I would like to report that once again we had a very successful 2001 season. The 2002 season is well and truly underway with 12 sub junior teams and 10 junior teams, of which three are Super league teams who are off to a great start to the season. . In addition, for the second year running, we have an under 18 girls team. This year at Bulleen we have for the first time the Goalkick Program for boys and girls under seven years of age. This program is designed around skill training and no league games.

$20,000 to make this trip possible. I would like to thank the president Giancarlo Peruzzo and his board for the support they have given to this venture. Finally I hope that all the teams have a successful year and I know that they will do the Veneto Club proud. Egon Schille.

Bulleen Lions Juniors

The big news this year is that the Under 15 Super League team has been invited to compete in two tournaments in Germany against teams from all over the Europe. This is the first time a Bulleen team will be going to Europe to represent the club and country. They will be away for most of the month of May. I, Egon Schille on behalf of the Veneto Club want to congratulate all the players and parents for their magnificent efforts in raising about

Tennis Report Tennis Members Tennis is a great game and our facilities here at the Veneto Club are unsurpassed and this is reinforced by our membership. Our current membership is as follows: family 100, single 87, junior 47 and 5 life members. We field approximately 40 teams in 8 competitions. With such a strong membership and on court commitment, our off court functions and management of our club should not be left to so few. It is important for members to remember this is a Club. Members should put in to make Veneto Club Tennis ever better and enjoy all our events and functions, both on and off the courts. Our 2001 Club Championships were held in October and we had over sixty participants in fourteen events. It was great to see many of our juniors participating in events along side those more elderly members of our club. Some great tennis was had and final day was well attended and all those present enjoyed our BBQ. Congratulations to our reigning champions Ricky Presutto and Elaina Kefalianos, to all winners (refer 2001 Roll of Honour) and equally to all those who participated. At the end of each season we hold the famous Brutti & Belli handicap. Each time this event is held a major debate takes place on what the rules should be, how the handicaps should be determined and who should be made to play with whom. Anyway, the committee has decided to stick with the proven recipe at this stage, as we know the crowd shows up and three weeks of good fun tennis is had by all. This handicap event is open to all members, not just those playing competition, and we encourage you to join in. The 2001 Summer Belli saw a gripping final with a magnificent comeback by Dino Bettiol and Dominic de Stefanis taking the glory over Robert Tombolato and an injury struck Jason Maroun. The 2001 Brutti, with some questioning over handicaps saw tournament referee

The growth and strength in our juniors is to be commended and this would not have been possible without the efforts and direction by our junior cocoordinator Elena McCrone. Elena puts in many hours organizing these young kids and I'm sure any help offered to her by parents would be well appreciated. The current Autumn 2002 season is now at the finals stage and many Veneto Club Tennis teams are in them. We wish all teams good luck and let's hope we can add more pennants to our collection.

SQUASH Report The Club competes in the Club Circuit of the Victorian Squash Racquets Association. Two Pennant Competitions are held annually: the Spring Season from August to December and the Autumn Season from February to June. The Autumn Season 2001 saw four of the Club's six teams reach the finals. The No. 1 team, captained by Anthony Bucello, was most successful, winning the B2 Grade Pennant and were promoted two grades into A3 for the Spring Season. The Club's D.1 Grade team lost in the final while C.3 and D.2 teams were both beaten in their semi-finals. Anthony Bucello again captained the No. 1 team for the Spring 2001 Pennant and the team, in its first A Grade season, put up a great performance to be narrowly beaten in the semi-finals. Currently the Club has six teams competing in the Autumn 2002 Pennant. As we go to press the A.3 team is well clear on top of the ladder and poised to win the Club's first A Grade Pennant. We wish them the best of luck. Also performing well is our C Grade team. Captained by Nat Surace, the team lies in second position with just three rounds to be played. Two Pennants would be a great result for the Club.

NEW PLAYERS WELCOME Pennant Squash provides an excellent opportunity for members to improve the standard of their play and the Club would welcome new members at all levels of play. The Club Circuit comprises the top private Clubs of Melbourne and it provides an excellent social evening. The Club Circuit now accepts ladies in its competitions and now has numerous mixed teams. Angelo Cherubin (grazie, Angelo, per tutto it lavoro svolto), it comitato ha dato it benvenuto ai Sig.ri Elio Rigoni e Antonio Pesavento.

Dino Rigoni. Infine, vogliamo ringraziare ii nostro legale, it Sig.

Enfasi a stata fatta sulle nuove responsabilita politiche degli italiani all'estero.

Tulle le mozioni sono state passate all'unanimita. II Sig.

ORDER of MERIT RINO GROLLO Rino Grollo was awarded the Order of Merit of the Australian Olympic Committee, the highest award given by this committee. The award was presented by the President, John Coates at the Annual General Meeting of the Australian Olympic Committee in Sydney in May this year and was greeted with sustained applause by the assembled Australia's Olympic sports administrators. As John Coates said "when Steven Bradbury and Alisa Camplin claimed Australia's first Winter Olympic gold medals in Salt Lake city, they achieved their own sporting dreams, but also fulfilled the vision of Australia's most dedicated and generous winter sports Patron, Rino Grollo".

In the above photograph: Kevan Gosper Vice President IOC, Rino Grollo and John Coates President AOC.

Rino's involvement and support of winter sports now spans some ten years. From the direct financial support of the Olympic Winter Institute of Australia, enabling it to hire the world's leading coaches and support intensive international competition programs to his nurturing of the aspiring freestyle team. In addition Rino has given enormous infrastructure and organisational support, including serving as a board member of the Institutes since 1995. In 1997 Rino hosted the aerials FIS World Cup, the first in the southern hemisphere. The Mt Buller World Cup has since played a key role in the development of this country's women's aerial team, now one of the strongest in the world. John Coates concluded "the result of Rino Grollo's commitment was obvious at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympic Games with Australia's best Team performance, but its legacy will be seen at future Olympics when Australia continues to make its mark on the world of winter sports".

The President of the Veneto Club, the Committee members and all club members, congratulate Mr Rino Grollo for his achievement. - Page - 56
