Message from
Nicholas Kotsiras M.P. Member for Bulleen
Dear Mr Pozzebon I extend warm greetings to all members and friends of the Veneto Club. A great Club located in a beautiful area of Bulleen. A Club that is renowned for its hospitality and responsiveness. A Club that reinforces the benefits inherited in a rich multicultural society. The Veneto Club was founded in 1967 and presently has over 1900 members, making it one of the largest Italian clubs in Australia. The club's aims are laudable and should be applauded. The Veneto Club not only provides for the needs of Victorians from an Italian background but also caters for members of the wider Manningham community. It provides individuals with the opportunity to pursue their aspirations and to participate in the community, while at the same time recognising and supporting the rights of all its members to retain and express their cultural heritage. The Veneto Club has served the Bulleen electorate well and I wish to thank all the members of the Club for their community involvement. I wish to also congratulate the hardworking Committee for ensuring that the needs of their members are met. Finally I wish the Bulleen Zebras all the success and to thank the sponsors for their continued support over the years.

President's Report Dear members, As my first year of presidency at the Club I have to recognise that this position, as president, has important commitments and a big responsibility. I have been very busy undertaking my work with great enthusiasm. I have had the opportunity to meet different people, including politicians, and appreciate the many friendships I have made. One of the most interesting of these, meeting the various Olympic soccer teams that trained at our club, especially the Italian Olympic Soccer Team. I have been involved with all the subcommittee sport members that give life and lustre to our Club, and most importantly, I would like to mention the very active Bocce group that have organised a successful President's Cup and the friendly competition between Liberal and Labour. Our soccer teams are doing very well this season and are amongst the top positions in their respective groups. Our Ladies Auxiliary are, as always, actively involved in our Club and we must thank them for their invaluable work.
I cordially thank all the various provincial associations that continuously frequent our Club keeping it active with their social activities. I am grateful to all my committee members who have collaborated with me in the difficult administration of the Club and have assisted me in making the right choices for the benefit of our association. A particular thankyou to the Finance .Committee for their continual help throughout the year. I personally thank Cay. Rino Tessarotto for his interest in this yearly publication and for his involvement with the soccer. I would like to thank all the staff of the Club that are dedicated, serious and do a professional job. From the office to the kitchen, gardeners and maintenance. We are assisted by honest and hard working volunteers to whom I extend my appreciation. The Club's activities are usually supported by generous contributions from members and various companies. To all these people I am extremely grateful.
The elderly members lead by Mrs Donna Di Marzio, promote their social activities in our Club, are always busy. To this group I extend my fondness and thank them for their active participation.
Finally in my annual report I would like to wish all the Club members and patrons of the Club best wishes for a happy and prosperous future.
As is noted in the Club, there are many volunteers that we should recognise and thank for their free assistance and services.
The President Alfonso Pozzebon
I would personally like to thank Mario Bonis and his group of volunteers who are currently running Bingo with great success.

From the Vice-President Tony Pegoraro There have been some memorable moments for me during the last twelve months, but perhaps the most rewarding for me personally was the Veneto Club's involvement with the Olympic Soccer Training last September. As you all know our Club received fantastic publicity during this period both on a national and international level. The Olympic Games were a wonderful opportunity for the Veneto Club and we should all be proud to have been a part of this special event. I would like to thank those persons who gave their assistance during the upgrading of the soccer ground and also the volunteers who helped make the Olympic Training so exceptional at our Club. The Italian Olympic Soccer Team along with teams from other Countries trained at our Club. A very successful welcome was organised at our Club for the Italian Soccer Team which was attended by Dr Gianni Bardini (Italian Consul) and many other dignitaries. Many people from the Italian Community attended and welcomed the Italian Officials, Players and of course their coach Marco Tardelli who were all very impressed with our Club and facilities as well as the hospitality shown to them. On the catering side we had no Manager from July to November and would therefore like to thank the staff for their help and support during this period. Our long term Head Chef GINO retired and our sincere thanks to him for his dedication to the Club over many years. Mr Piero Prestopino has now been appointed Head Chef. Mr John Englese was employed as the General Manager of the Club from November to May and he has worked hard to address the many issues that needed attention and it is unfortunate that he has decided to move on. The Gymnasium continues to improve due to the commitment of Daniel Morton who constantly seeks new members and I thank him for his efforts. During the past year we have seen a 20% increase in membership and a 35% increase in monthly gym attendances. The "Sports Centre" is home to the Veneto Club Basketball teams - Seniors and Juniors, (my thanks to the Coaches and players of these teams for their dedication), also the Melbourne Bulleen Boomers (Basketball) and the Melbourne Falcons (Volleyball) we wish them all continued success. We have also hosted the national Taekwondo Championships as well as hosting athletes who trained at our "Sports Centre" prior to the commencement of the Paralympics. As liaison officer for the Shooters, my thanks to Mr Ernesto Bertollo and the Shooters for their ongoing contribution. Most importantly my gratitude is extended to all the Members who have given me their support and assisted me during the last twelve months and also to my Committee colleagues. From The Secretary
Friends members I am privileged to be able to express my gratitude for your trust in voting me your secretary last March the 8th, 2001. I have been in this position for a too short a period of time, to be able to comment positively or otherwise about the performance of the Club or Committee, particularly prior to the 8th March 2001. I think, we are steering our Club in the right direction at present, it will take a lot of good will and courage to achieve it. I am certain that amongst you, dear Members, there are many good, honest, and willing people ready to participate in the running of our Club as Committee members. Our Committee is in need of a fresh blood intake and people with modem thinking and intelligence, capable to integrate our past with the future. Therefore I urge you, friends, to nominate for committee member and participate in the decision making of our Club, for the future of all of us. Whatever position I will occupy, after June 28, it will be with the best interest of our Club at hart and nothing else. I am always open to your advises, comments and queries that I seriously consider at all times. I desire to thank our president Alfonso Pozzebon, the committee and the office staff for their cooperation.
Dominic Alberti Secretary
Gaming Manager's Message Dear Members, As this is my first annual report allow me to introduce myself to those whom I have not yet had the pleasure of meeting. My name is Anthony Canil and I have now been managing the clubs gaming room for a period of just over a year. My experience within the hospitality industry varies from working in Hotels, Pubs, Clubs and more recently working at Melbourne's Crown Casino. Sharing Veneto Culture, I came to the Veneto club hoping to share my experience in the industry with the club, so that I could assist the club with moving on into the future. The hospitality Industry has become a very competitive market. Clubs and Pubs have become a popular social attraction throughout Melbourne and Victoria. My aim is to ensure that the Veneto Club stays competitive, up to date with modern facilities and, a leader amongst clubs throughout Melbourne. Our aim is to provide the Italian community as well as other communities, with a fantastic facility available for their use. In addition, we aim to make the Veneto Club not only an attraction for the older generations but also enhance our image and attract the younger generations "Our Future". I am pleased to say that my first year managing the club's gaming room has been very challenging but also a very successful one at that. Throughout the year I believe we have made the Club's Gaming area increasingly attractive to all members and guests, providing the latest in Gaming available, including; new games and gaming machines with a recent upgrade of our venue For those of you who visit the club on a regular basis, I'm sure you would agree that the promotions bought to you over the last year have been exciting and to a high standard. Working at a variety of Clubs I have noticed that the Veneto Club is very generous to it's members and endeavours to satisfy its members as best as possible. All members should have received the Clubs new quarterly News Letter, Veneto Club
Anthony Canil
News, a full six page informative colour magazine. The magazine outlines what's on at the Club, Gaming room news and many special offers that have been very successful and utilized by many members in the past. As mentioned I am looking forward to help steer the Veneto Club into a position that will see it strive amongst Melbourne's best. I do believe that members and guest should be supplied with a first class club that can provide an overall entertainment experience for members to enjoy. I am a firm believer that goals should be set high and believe that the Veneto Club working together with it's Members, Managers/Committee and staff is capable of providing a memorable entertainment experience, and that will, as a result see the return of members and guests. I look forward to seeing you all soon, please feel free to raise any suggestions or concerns about our Gaming facilities/area, so that our operation continues to run smoothly. Let's work together in making the Veneto Club a leader in Clubs throughout Melbourne and Regional Victoria. I thank all of you for your support and I look forward to a long working relationship with you all for the future of our club. Regards Anthony Canil, Gaming Manager.

BULLEEN ZEBRAS SENIOR SOCCER AT THE VENETO CLUB Bulleen Zebras commenced its 2001 Premier League campaign under coach Joe Mullen with Sean Keogh as his assistant. The 2001 season got under way in February 2001 with the following players as its senior squad: • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •
Michael Theoklitos Nathan Thomas Dean Tartaglia Michael Mazzini Paul Della Rocca Jimmy Latinopoulos Will Hastie Sava Rusmir Berkan Sakaci Danny Gnjidic Warren Spink Brian Macnicol Damien Guglielmi Dennis Vucinic Lance Plunkett Ryan 011erton Robert Bresciano Romano Ginesi Joseph Damiano
Germany with Werder Bremen . The experience gained overseas will strengthen the Bulleen squad. After a slow start to the season the Bulleen Zebras currently sit in 6th position on the Premier League table with 10 games remaining. Once again the club is viewing a place in the finals, with the top 5 play offs coming back this season to decide the championship .All the other Premier League Clubs will be doing their utmost to try and stop us making the top 5 as they see Bulleen as real championship threat once the team hits its straps. Such is our strong competitive spirit and proud tradition. The experienced squad has been bolstered this year with the sprinkling of young talent such as Michael Theoklitos, Nathan Thomas, Dennis Vucinic, Ryan 011erton, Berkan Sakaci and Robert Bresciano already showing that they can more than hold their own in senior company.
Captain Michael Mazzini seriously injured his back during pre-season and unfortunately will be out for the remainder of the season. The squad received a welcome boost when Joseph Damiano returned from his stint in
The reserve team, which is made up of players from our National Youth League side, is coached by Jimmy Gotzilianis and should provide the club with further talent to represent our senior team.

.Tennis RepoTt, Tennis Members, Tennis is growing in popularity for all ages and this is reflected in our increasing membership numbers. We do encourage members to use the courts socially, invite guests for a game, and use the facilities our great Club provides. It is important for members to remember this is a Club, and therefore, the more we put in, the more we get out. That's why it's important for Tennis Club members to join in our events and functions, both on and off the court. The Annual Dinner Dance 2001, being held on Saturday 16 June is going to be a memorable night with entertainment "The Brian Fitzgerald Band", fine food and of course great company! Last year's Dinner Dance was a great night by all reports and this year's is guaranteed to be even better. As members of Veneto Club Tennis we urge you all to rally your team and friends and join us. Our Annual General Meeting is to be held on Monday 18 June 2001 at 8.00pm. All members should attend to have their say in the operations of Veneto Club Tennis. Please consider becoming involved with the Committee. We welcome your comments, and encourage members to come along and express their thoughts and enjoy the supper and drinks provided. All members would have received our-mail out detailing our Calendar of Events for 2001. Club Championships are scheduled for October; Finals Day is worth marking in your diaries to see some excellent tennis followed by an enjoyable and friendly BBQ. Our first Mixed Round Robin in March was a fun day and we hope to see more participants at our next one on Sunday 26 August. These days cater for all standards of play (we can arrange partners) and are great fun socially. Our winners Jose Di Monte and Dino Bettiol were convincing over husband and wife team Elena and Philip McCrone. The Brutti and Belli takes place twice per year and the Tutte Belle only in the summer months. The Summer Brutti and Belli Handicap saw the usual faces but in new combinations. Belli winners after crowd protests were Adrian Sangiorgio and Donato D'Augello defeating John Prazzello and Robert Conte. The Brutti winners Anthony Cecchin (first trophy ever!!) and Raymond Barro overcame a tough struggle from Tony Vizzari and Theo Eversteyn. These are the crowd favourites and it's great to see so many of the members enjoying these events. It's a good way to meet fellow members and have the chance to enjoy their company. Check the notice board for details of events or contact a Committee member. RELAZIONE ANNUALE 2000/2001 - Page 25

Our juniors are growing in number and provide the breeding ground for future Tennis Victoria Pennant teams. We currently have a ladies and a mens Pennant Team. Our resident coaches Glenn Busby and Vince Dattoli offer lessons and programmes for all standards and ages of players. We are fortunate to have such excellent resident coaches who are attracting some of the State's best junior players to play for our Club. This promotion of junior tennis is vital for the future of Veneto Club Tennis. The Committee has decided to re-decorate the Club Room, which will take place in May and June. Unfortunately a window will not be installed, but with our interior design skills we are sure the outcome will be pleasing to our members.

Fellow Committee members and those who give their time and contributions to the running of our functions I thank you. BOCCE REPORT The 2000-2001 season has come to an end and the August September months will provide a valuable rest for both Bocce player and organizing committee from the rigours of competition. This time of year is always a good time to reflect back and on the season just gone and identify just how well we have preformed for both players and Bocce committees and try to improve ourselves for the next season.
3
Congratulation to Emilio Colla, Anthony Parlato, Valter Brecevic, Dino Mickolic, and coach Fernando Cardinale for qualifying for the state side. Congratulations to our two women Elda Stangerlin and Agnese Giacomin for also qualifying for the state team. Good luck and hope they will take home the trophies in June. In the middle of February the first issue of IL BOCCISTA was printed and member and Bocce players picked up 350 copies of this newsletter. From the feed back received it seemed to have been a success and by the time this article is printed Issue 2 will have been read. We felt a need to record such things as competition results, decisions made by the Committee and promote and heighten the interest in Bocce. It is my hope that IL BOCCISTA in time becomes something you can collect as a Bocce player as a permanent reminder of competition held and interest and inform possible new Bocce players to the game. Be sure to pick up your copy. It can be found at the main reception of the club in February, May, August and November.
Our Bocce players have represented the Veneto Club to their utmost ability once again for another season. The 38 Federation players have to be congratulated for their efforts in the season just past for reinforcing the Veneto Club as a Bocce playing hub boasting high standard of skills and passion to the game. It is not hard to attract a new Bocce player to the Veneto Club as the average Veneto Club Player creates and enjoyable, friendly and competitive environment that makes playing the game a pleasure.

This was a very enjoyable tournament and we look forward to maximum participation next year. The prize money for this Tournament was provided by the Bocce Federation of Australia.
ELITE THROWING TRAINING CAMP This Training Camp was held at the Veneto Club Melbourne on Saturday l@ May and it is hoped that this was beneficial to all participants.

PARLIAMENTARY CHALLENGE Victorian Labour and Liberal politicians participated in an inaugural Fours Competition on Saturday 18 th November last at the Veneto Club and organised by the BFA. Labour just scraped home to win this competition and the Royal Children's Hospital benefited with a donation by the winning team. This competition was contested in a spirit of friendship and now the Perpetual Trophy sits proudly over the Victorian Parliamentary Members Bar. We are looking forward to the next Parliamentary Challenge which will probably be held in August this year.

Basketball Report
Throughout the past 3 and half years the Veneto Club has taken part in the 'Bulleen Templestowe Basketball Senior Mens Division', by including up to three teams in the competition in previous seasons. During the first half of the 2001 season the Veneto Club has included two teams into the competition 'Veneto Tigers' and 'Bulleen Veneto', both teams are currently playing in the same division, so to avoid confusion we use different names. All our games are played at Bulleen Veneto Basketball Stadium on Monday nights between 8:20pm and 9:50pm with the exception of the finals which are played at The Sheahans Road Stadium. Each Veneto team includes between 8 to 10 people consisting of senior and younger players, which judging by the amount of games they have won proves to be a dynamic combination. Over the years both Veneto teams have been involved in numerous final campaigns but one individual achievement which has not gone unnoticed is Simon Panozzo from the 'Bulleen Veneto' team for winning the divisions 2000 R/U best and fairest award.
Roberto Salvatore Bulleen Veneto
In concluding, anyone interested in basketball please don't hesitate to come down on Monday evenings between 8:20pm and 9:50pm and express an interest in participating.

Congratulazioni a lei. II nostro comitato e rimasto quasi uguale. Concludo con un saluto a voi tutti Boating on the Yarra (by Daniel Bertozzi)

Padre Giuliano Cavarzan Segretario A.T.M.

Ida Zanella

it successivo raduno dei nostri soci.

Purtroppo "a tempo e paroni no se ghe comanda".

Mi sento in obbligo di ringraziare sentitamente tutti i soci, it comitato, Frank Gazzola, it Veneto Club e Bruno Rodighiero.

Bocce Bowls Both sides of the House took up the challenge to play with the shiny brass bocce bowls at the home of the sport in Victoria, the Veneto Club in Bulleen on Saturday 18th November. The Liberal party teams were led by Opposition Leader, Dr Denis Napthine, while Carlo Carli captained the Labour side, deputised for absent Justin Madden. At two games all, the scores were even at 21 points each. In the shoot-off decider, Judy Maddigan Labour (Essendon) narrowly beat out Nick Kotsiras Liberal (Bulleen) to give the Labour Parliamentary Party team the right to be engraved on the Perpetual Parliamentary Trophy. The Labour Party Captain, Carlo Carli will present the winner's cheque for $1,000, donated by Rino Grollo to the "My Room" Leukemia Ward at the Royal Children' Hospital. The Title was fiercely contested in a spirit of friendship and camaraderie. It provided a great opportunity for members of Parliament to enjoy the skills of the sport of Bocce Bowls with the assistance of some experienced bocce players. The event was organised by the Bocce Federation of Australia in conjunction with the Veneto club, as an opportunity to make the sport better known in the wider community.
