More than a holiday, it's a celebration of life. If you love things Italian wait until you've tasted them in Italy. There's so much more to love and life. The fashion, the food, the wines, the music, the scenery, the architecture, the works of art.... it's more than a holiday, it's a celebration of life itself. But don't just come to Italy. Come to Alitalia's Italy. We can show you Romeo and Juliet's balcony in Verona; let you sigh on the Bridge of Sighs in Venice; gaze in awe at Michelangelo's "David" in Florence; sit where Roman Emperors sat in ancient Rome; point you in the direction of the most elegant boutiques. We'll also give you direct flights to Rome and help you plan the best money-saving "Intermezzo Italia" tours. This year, come to Italy with Alitalia and celebrate life Italian style.

E' mio dovere ringraziare particolarmente it nostro AVVOCATO LORIS SARTORI, IL COMITATO FINANZIARIO, COMM. DUILIO BARRO, CAV. President's Report t is said that "history repeats itself", but in these times even the more popular expressions leave us with some doubt. For me and for the Club, 1990/91 has been a completely new year; and I am sure that history has not repeated itself. Nevertheless I am happy that UNDER MY PRESIDENCY, THE CLUB HAS CONTINUED TO SERVE IT'S MEMBERS AND THE COMMUNITY with the same dedication and enthusiasm it has always had. Financially the results are not record breaking, this is entirely due to the difficult economic situation that is sweeping across Australia at this time. Initially it has not been easy coordinating the intentions, ideas and initiatives of a completely renewed Committee. We have had a difficult running in period but good sense and the will to do the best for the Club prevailed. Having found collective harmony; it was easier to make the right decisions and even to promote some of the ideas that in the past we did not have the space or means to put into practice. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my Committee for their dedication throughout this difficult year and in particular to Pasquale Rossilli who has been in hospital for some time. We all wish him well. We have tried many times to REVIVE THE "DISCO" for the young people, a function that in previous years has had great success and was one of the most profitable. Unfortunately up till now the results have been poor. This year nearly all the earnings have been the result of the support of the members and the various sub-committees as well as the much appreciated work of the volunteers. It is obvious that our future hopes and aspirations are based on us all. I am happy to see that the attendances at the Club (apart from the disco) have not decreased even though the members and occasional clients are spending less. These are hard times and we have to act. As a consequence, seeing the positive results, I would like on behalf of the Directive Committee to extend a very heartfelt thank-you to the following: The "LADIES AUXILIARY" who continue with success their program of social gatherings and they know that with their cordial and considerate presence they give a sense of elegance and familiarity to the Club and the functions they organize. The "TENNIS" SUB-COMMITTEE that apart from the continuous and numerous presence on the courts

by its members, it assures that the youth participate in the social life of the Club, guaranteeing a prosperous future. The "BOCCE" SUB-COMMITTEE, both Male and Female. They have honoured themselves by winning social games, as well as local and interstate tournaments. The "SOCCER" SUB-COMMITTEE. This year it has given us great satisfaction obtaining extremely good results and boasting a very high rating score. The "SQUASH", "SHOOTERS", "NETBALL" and "BASKETBALL" SUB-COMMITTEES. An integral part of the Club. With the participation of the young people in these groups our hopes for a prosperous future are maintained. The CORO VENETO, is a living example of the artistic talents of the Veneto people. The "ANZIANI" SUB-COMMITTEE that gathers together many pensioners from Bulleen and nearby areas. The members of this Circle are an example of hard work and courage having emigrated to Australia in difficult times, both economically and socially. The PROVINCIAL ASSOCIATIONS, VICENTINI, TREVISANI, PADOVANI, BELLUNESI AND VERONESI. These with other "paesane" associations, maintain the Club as their home by organizing their functions and gatherings in our reception rooms. It is my duty to sincerely thank our SOLICITOR, LORIS SARTORI, THE FINANCE COMMITTEE; COMM. DUILIO BARRO, CAV. RINO TESSAROTTO, FRANK GAZZOLA AND JOHN CABION for their noteworthy contribution to the life of the Club. To all the VOLUNTEERS, who work very hard organizing and promoting functions and gatherings for the Club, a heartfelt thank-you. To the FUNCTION MANAGER, GIUSEPPE BIANCOTTO, his staff in the Kitchen, Restaurant and Bars, and also to the Office Staff who work tirelessly with much dedication. They are all deserving of my sincerest gratitude. I would like to conclude by thanking YOU THE MEMBERS AND YOUR FAMILIES. You make the Club the success that it is and give it the proud name it enjoys in the heart of the Italian community in Melbourne. With my sincerest gratitude to you all

Invitandovi nuovamente a frequentare it Club piu' sovente. Vi saluto tutti cordialmente GIUSEPPE BIANCOTTO

First Vicepresident's Report

ur Veneto Social Club has, like the rest of the community, experienced a very challenging period over the laSt 12 months. We have seen a reduction in business revenue due mainly to lower levels of patronage to functions and events like so many similar establishments in Melbourne. Furthermore, the demise of the Youth Disco events has been the most significant blow to our revenue. The result of these challenging situations had caused the Management Committee to focus far more attention to bringing the organisation costs down whilst actively promoting new functions and new patrons. To this end, the Veneto Social Club is extremely fortunate to have some of the most generous and contributing individual members and groups that have helped directly in reducing operating costs throughout the year. To mention just a few:

O

- The Ladies Auxiliary and the many volunteers who tirelessly and consistently perform so many key functions from fund-raising through to preparing restaurants, etc. If it were not for their significant effort and contribution, the Veneto Social Club financial performance would be far lower. - The Young Adult Sub-Committee who are relatively new-corners to the Veneto Social Club scene, typifying the future and the changing face of our Club. They too are making a significant contribution to attracting new Veneto patrons and future members of the Veneto Social Club, whilst increasing the number of successful social functions and revenue for the Club. Through this new and energetic group of Veneto descendants, the Management Committee now has new blood to tackle the changes and challenges of the future. I could talk much more of the many other Veneto Social Club Sub-Committees and "Enti" associated with our Club and you can read about their activities in this edition of the Annual Report. Finally, of my role and position, I regret that due to heavy business commitments, I have been unable to make the full contribution that both this

position warrants and the willingness and energy with which I accepted the members votes and support 12 months ago. For this reason alone and the belief that the Management Committee must create and lead the new Visione Veneta for the 90's, that I must make room for a new member who can devote the time and effort that I currently cannot. Therefore, I will not nominate for the new year. I thank my Committee colleagues and each of you for your support and encouragement and ask that you channel your positive ideas and energies to the new Management Committee for 1991/92. Best wishes for an exciting new year. FRANK FRESCHI First Vice President

17.mo ANNIVERSARIO.

Young Adult Sub-Committee • as

he aim of the Young Adult Sub-Committee remains to attract younger people, including those families with young children, back to the Club. In organising a range of activities that appeal across the age group of 18 to 45, it is hoped that members who have not been active in the Club or who have let their membership lapse, will find new incentive to become involved and support the Club. The Young Adult Sub-Committee has a great pride in our Veneto heritage and in our Club. It is hoped that through our work we will be able to assist in establishing a strong membership base which will guarantee the preservation of our Veneto heritage. The past 12 months have been very productive. Our functions have included two Cabaret Nights, a 1970's Revival Night, a number of school holiday programmes, a family car rally, a family B-B-Q, and the initiation of regular Thursday night drinks in the Sala Venezia.

T

We have also participated in a number of regular Club outdoor events by organising specific activities which appeal to children and so make the days more attractive for all age groups. So at the traditional events such as the Castagne Picnic, Spring Sports Carnival and Christmas Picnic we have provided pony rides, blow-up castles, painting activities, fairy floss and popcorn and similar attractions for children. We are committed to maintaining this support at future Club functions and seek the support of parents with young families to make sure that these activities are a success. Our group is particularly proud of its involvement in the City of Doncaster and Templestowe's Festival Week. The highlight was the photographic exhibition held at the Club which displayed historical photos of Italians in Victoria between 1900 and 1945. The exhibition was well attended and helped give the Club very good exposure within the local community. We also maintain an involvement with the Club and the City of Doncaster and Templestowe in investigating the possibility of forming a sister city relationship with a City in the Veneto Region. We see this as quite an exciting prospect.

We would like to thank everybody who has supported us over the last 12 months, in particular the Senior Committee. It has been a lot of hard work, but the foundations have been laid for a very exciting future. If we are to ensure the success of the Club, it is important that the younger members get behind us and support the activities organised. The future prosperity of the Club remains in our hands - try to become more involved and visible around the Club and play your part in the preserving of our heritage. Un ringraziamento particolare a tutti i soci, amici e simpatizzanti the ci seguono e ci incoraggiano". WALTER REFFO Coordinatore

c

giocatori su sei per rappresentare it Victoria net campionato australiano. Essi sono: S. Gatto, E. Colla, M. Velo, G. Favaro, F. Cardinale. Nei campionati australiani per i giovani sotto 18 anni, it nostro Malco Favrin ha vinto ben quattro titoli: it tiro di precisione, it tiro veloce, it gioco della navetta e it doppio, meritandosi cosi' it riconoscimento di Best and Fairest. Congratulazioni Malco!

Secretary's Report t is with great pleasure that I present my first Secretary's Report for the year ended 30th April, 1991. It has been an interesting year in so far as it is the first year that there has been five young people from the Young Adult Sub-Committee that are now in the Senior Committee of the Veneto Social Club. It has a been a great experience for all of us to work with the older members of the Committee who have served the Club for many years and have a lot of experience with the running of such a great Club. I think it very important that we get young people involved with the Club and attending Club functions. We are striving to keep the young people coming to the Club from when they attended with their parents during their childhood days, through to their teenage years and then on to their 20's and 30's and onwards. We are holding a variety of new functions to try and generate the interest in the younger people to attend. We will endeavour to do our best to regain the attendances to the under 18's Disco aiming to achieve the numbers we use to.

I

At this point I would like to take the opportunity to thank the office staff, John Cobain, Mario Bonis and Linda Stoppa for the great job they have done over the last 12 months and for their support and knowledge they gave me, especially through my first year as Honorary Secretary. It makes the job so much easier when you work with such great people. I would also like to thank all the Sub-Committee and sporting Sub-Committees for all their hard work and support to the Club and also to all the voluntary workers. It is with all these people's hard work that makes a Club like ours function so successfully. We have had again, an increase in young members joining the Club and therefore increasing our overall membership. It is comforting that in these times we have not gone down in overall membership, but actually increased in numbers. I would like to thank all the present Committee members for their hard work and co-operation and would like to wish all the very best to the new Committee.

LOUIS CREMA Honorary Secretary

Treasurer's Report It gives me much pleasure as Treasurer to present my second report on the Financial Activities of the Club for the year ended 30th April, 1991. I would like to thank all the members who have continued to support the Club, to our President, Agostini Martini, and the Committee for their untiring hard work and dedication during this very difficult year, particularly the younger members who have fitted in very well, and carried out their tasks conscientiously. I would also like to express my gratitude to the Office Staff - John Cobain, Mario Bonis and Linda Stoppa for the help and assistance that they have given me during the past 12 months. To our Manager, Giuseppe Biancotto, my appreciation for a job well done. The Club has had a Trading Loss of $41645. Membership and Admission Fees, Donations and Interest Received of $103956 have resulted in an overall Net Profit of $62311. The Trading Loss of $41645 is not too bad a result considering the Youth Income Loss of $4406, down $79732 on last years figures, and the poor economic climate over the past year. The Restaurant & Bar Trading figures have increased by $20463 on the previous year although price increases have been kept to a minimum. Total Sales have increased by $9835. Food and Liquor costs have decreased by $18076, as have wages decreased by $6,840. The Band Expenses have increased by $6830, but Club Charges have decreased by $5859 and Liquor Licence Fees by $363. Other Activity Income and Expenses have decreased by $60621. As I have already mentioned, the Youth Income has decreased by $79732, but Bingo Income has increased by $5492, the Soccer Loss has decreased by $12636, and most Other Activities rhcome have shown an increase. The Club Trading Expenses have increased by $16565 due mainly to the increase of $14960 in Bar & Restaurant Consumables. These costs are high due to replenishment of a number of items such as coffee cups, cutlery, liquor glasses, beer jugs, doyleys, napkins and various other items not considered as Current Assets. Administration Expenses have increased by $15041 due mainly to an increase in Management Wages of $17791, Workers Compensation Insurance increased by $6527. Most other items have decreased. Property Expenses have decreased by $26235 and this is reflected by the decrease in property repairs and maintenance of $24757. This has been achieved by keeping a tight control on spending in relation to replacemen ts of major items throughout the building. General Maintenance spending has been maintained. Finance Expenses have decreased by $215 giving an overall increase in Overhead & Operating Expenses of only $5156. The Committee have endeavoured to keep spending to a minimum during this year, but there are many items that will require attention in the very near future. These will be discussed by the Building Sub-Committee. The main Committee believe that there will need to be an increase in annual subscriptions, and trust that the members will support them regarding this matter, as they have always done so in the past. STATEMENT BY COMMITTEE MEMBERS (DIRECTORS)

In the opinion of the Committee of the Veneto Social Club:

1

(a)

The accompanying Income and Expenditure Statement is drawn up so as to give a true and fair view of the results of the Club for the financial year ended 30th April, 1991.

(b)

The accompanying Balance Sheet is drawn up so as to give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the Club as at the end of that financial year.

(c)

At the date of this Statement, there are reasonable grounds to believe that the Club will be able to pay its debts as and when they fall due.

2.

The accompanying accounts have been made out in accordance with Australian accounting standards and applicable approved accounting standards with the exception that depreciation has not been provided on buildings. The Committee considers that the buildings form an integral part of the properties and that any diminution in value thereof should be offset by increases in value in the land and therefore depreciation of buildings is unnecessary.

This Statement is made in accordance with a resolution of the Committee and is signed for and on behalf of the Club by:

AUDITORS REPORT TO THE MEMBERS OF VENETO SOCIAL CLUB (A Company Limited by Guarantee)

I have audited the accompanying accounts in accordance with Australian Auditing Standards. The Club has not provided for depreciation of buildings which are included in the Balance Sheet at the cost of $1594133 refer Note 2. This is a departure from a Statement of Accounting Standards issued by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia and the Australian Society of Accountants. In my opinion depreciation should be charged to the Income and Expenditure Statement so as to absorb the cost of the buildings over their useful economic lives. The Club has not calculated the financial effect of this departure from the accounting standard and it is impracticable for me to estimate this. It is not practicable to establish accounting control over cash receipts and payments made in cash prior to their respective receipt or payment by Club Sub-Commit tees. Accordingly, it was not practicable to extend my Audit Examination of such receipts and payments beyond verification of the amounts brought to account on the basis of the net movements of bank accounts of the Sub-Committees for the year under review. Subject to this `limitation, and with the exception referred to above relating to depreciating buildings, in my opinion:-

the accompanying accounts which have been prepared under the historical cost convention are properly drawn up in accordance with the provisions of the Companies (Victoria) Code and so as to give a true and fair view of:-

(a)

the state of affairs of the Club at 30th April, 1991 and the results for the year ended on that date: and

(ii)

the other matters reouired by Section 269 of that Code to be dealt with in the accounts:

the accounting records and other records and registers required by the Companies (Victoria) Code to be kept by the Company have been properly kept in accordance with the provisions of that Code.

Soccer Report

w

e should commence our Report by thanking PETER SIMEONI who retired as President at the completion of the 1990 season. Peter Simeoni has been President of the Soccer Sub-Committee for the past five years. He has seen the Club rise from Division 2 to the State League. Peter is still a staunch supporter of the Club and his presence at the games is greatly appreciated. Elvira D'Adam must also be acknowledged for her hard work over the past years as Secretary/Treasurer of the Club. She has also decided at the end of the 1990 season to seek greener pastures and retire from the Soccer Committee. The Bulleen-Veneto Soccer Club began its 1991 season with its participation in the major division of Victoria ie. The Premier League - made up of the top 14 sides in Victoria. The coach for the 1991 season is Andrew Bozikas -former player of the Bulleen-Veneto Club, exHeidelberg Utd (National League) and ex-Fawkner. Reserve coach is Ivan Stocco. The 1991 Committee is as follows: President Adrian Benetti Vice President Pat Saladino Treasurer Rino Tessarotto Junior Secretary Bruno Petrocco/Alex Lorenzi Committee Members Mauro Baldi Giovanni Pizzato Umberto Del Lazzari

In its quest to achieve top honours in the 1991 season the Club has wisely recruited the following players: Con Pappas Bill Tsiakos Anthony Grbac

After the 1990 season the Club had three of its players represent Victoria; Robert Krajacic, Anthony Grbac and Frank Valentic. Congratulations to the players on their achievement and in particular to Robert Krajacic who was named Victorian Captain. Robert Krajacic is also the Senior Club Captain for the 1991 season with Fabio Incantalupo as Vice Captain. Damian Baldi is the Captain of the Reserve Squad. Again this year our major sponsor is:

The support of the sponsors is greatly appreciated by the Club as it is their financial assistance that gives us great impetus to be successful. Thanks must go to Rino Tessarotto for his achievement in respect of our 1991 season membership. Our current seasons membership has increased from last year and in fact our Gold Pass Membership has increased by 50%. Again many thanks to all Gold Pass Members for assisting us to achieve this. The Club this year aims to finish the season in the top 4 or better and to play attractive and entertaining soccer so that our supporters can be proud and satisfied with our player's on field performances. The present Committee led by Adrian Benetti and Pat Saladino are very proud to be associated with the Bulleen-Veneto Club. A highly respected Club in the Victorian soccer scene; its tradition, honesty and sincerity are its major attributes. Best wishes to the Club for the 1991 season.

Tennis Report

t gives me great pleasure to report on another very successful year of Veneto Tennis. Currently Veneto Tennis is represented in competitions by eight Mens Teams, Six Ladies Teams and Ten Junior Teams. These Teams have won many Premierships during the year. Our very able Coach, Mr Russell Cornehls, is fostering the strength of Junior Tennis at our Club. Congratulations to all the following 1991 Club Champions who were most generously sponsored by the Grollo Brothers.

Our Social Calendar was most succesful with the tireless efforts of Tony Carafa and Paola Peruzzo especially noteworthy. The introduction of a "Talent Night" and "Rock N' Roll Night" was made successful by large attendances of Tennis members. The highlight was our Annual Tennis Dinner Dance which was attended by four hundred people. Special recognition for Mr Raffaele Launech's dedication to the Veneto Tennis Club was given when he was inducted as a Veneto Tennis Club Life Member. This year the Tina Mantello perpetual Trophy was awarded to Vanessa Cecchetto - Congratulations! I wish to take this opportunity to thank all Committee Members for their achievements during the year. A special thanks to Gina Kiag, Frances Bettiol and Rina Polazzon who will retire this year and be greatly missed. I look forward to your continued support for the Veneto Tennis Club.

Squash Report he Squash Club Championships are held in June/July of each year. The 1990/91 Championships were very successful and saw Shane Dal Santo defeat Anthony Bucello in the final. This was Anthony's first championship final and he performed most creditably. Congratulations go to both these young players. Anthony achieved some consolation in winning the handicap event, defeating Claude Franciscelli in the final. The Club competes in the Club Circuit Pennant of the Victorian Squash Rackets Association. Two pennant seasons are held each year, Spring and Autumn. Five teams were entered in the 1990 Spring Pennant and the Club was successful in winning the C.3. Grade Flag. Congratulations to captain John Coleman and his team comprising John Dal Santo, Dominic De Stefanis, Brendan Law, Mark Stockman and Anthony Bucello. The Club's top team, lead by Shane Dal Santo at No. 1 competed in the B.3. Grade and were narrowly beaten in the semi finals after an excellent season. The second • team lead by Chris Apswoude finished fourth in the C.1. Grade.

T

Best and Fairest Players for the season were:

Joe Macciocca receives his Best & Fairest Award from Squash Club President Bert Caneva.

Brendan Law receives his Best & Fairest A ward.

Shane Dal Santo Brendan Law Joe Macciocca Angelo Antignani 011ie Guglielmi

In the current Autumn Season the Club entry has been reduced to four teams. The Club has temporarily lost the services of Shane Dal Santo who has moved to Templestowe where he is competing at State Grade Level and the Club's best wishes for a successful season go out to him. As the season draws to a close, two teams have good prospects for the finals. The Club's top team, competing in C.1. Grade is third on the ladder and the second team, competing in C.2. is top in that Grade. We look forward hopefully to at least one Flag.

Anthony Bucello receives the Handicap Champion A ward.

Bingo See you Friday Night he game of Bingo at the Veneto Social Club has become one of the most successful weekly activities. Friday night has become the night out for the Member's wife. We saw it grow from a few dozen ladies to over two hundred at present. From 30 games to 40 games and from $70 Jackpot to $500 Jackpot. Male attendances are growing too, they are just as eager to grab the stake, but cannot beat the ladies.

The most successful nights of the year are the Christmas and Easter break-up party. Regrettably, not free from unpleasant incidents, mainly due to our over patronage. We must apologise for the inconvenience to all regular players that were left without tickets on those occasions. We are most thankful to you all, ladies and gentlemen, for your continuous support and for being patient on some of those noisy nights. A sincere thanks is extended to Mrs Martini and Mrs Piaser, Maree and Virginia for their great help and many thanks to all the gentlemen involved with the preparation of the hall, the serving behind the bar and the cleaning up. See you Friday night at 7.45pm.
