More than a holiday, it's a celebration of life. If you love things Italian wait until you've tasted them in Italy. There's so much more to love and life. The fashion, the food, the wines, the music, the scenery, the architecture, the works of art.... it's more than a holiday, it's a celebration of life itself. But don't just come to Italy. Come to Alitalia's Italy. We can show you Romeo and Juliet's balcony in Verona; let you sigh on the Bridge of Sighs in Venice; gaze in awe at Michelangelo's "David" in Florence; sit where Roman Emperors sat in ancient Rome; point you in the direction of the most elegant boutiques. We'll also give you direct flights to Rome and help you plan the best money-saving "Intermezzo Italia" tours. This year, come to Italy with Alitalia and celebrate life Italian style.

President's Report
It is a great pleasure for me to present to you, my dear members, my sixth Annual Report. The success which our Club enjoys is mainly due to our unity, good-will and ability to work together for the same goal. The enthusiasm, and spirit of collaboration that has been demonstrated by you all, particularly by all our voluntary workers who have carried out such a magnificent job during this period is one of the reasons for our achievements. In the 6 years I have been President of the Veneto Social Club, I have had the pleasure and honour of working with People who deserve all my respect for their diligence and hard work, even if at times we have encountered difficulties or have been the object of criticism. It is not always possible to meet all the demands of our members, and it is sometimes appears easier to criticise than work, but the knowledge of having carried out one's duties in the best possible manner possible is reason enough for personal satisfaction. The past twelve months have seen many important personalities from the Veneto Region who have come to Australia for the Bicentennary Celebrations and have visited our Veneto Social Club. We remember the large group from Asiago, the "Fisaorchestra" from Recoaro Terme, the group from Conco, the Folk Group from Treviso and the various representatives of the "Trey i san i nel Mondo" association, as well as delegates and councilors from the various municipalities. The two visits which most honoured us however, were that of the Patriarch of Venice, Cardinal Marco Ce', and the Regional President Professor Carlo On such occasions numerous Bernini. Australian authorities also came in contact with our association. This year, we organized two groups to visit the Veneto Region, and the response was excellent. The Senior Citizens group is presently in the Veneto Region and have been magnificently received by regional and provincial authorities. The group of Young Adults will leave on the 24th.June and I am very confident that they will enjoy the same warm welcome that has been reserved for our groups in the past.
I would like to briefly talk about the Club's financial position at this time, and whilst it reflects an increase in liabilities of approx.$5,000, our in reality we are doing extremely well. This year, costs involved in the refurbishment of our premises have reached approx. $111,000 more than previous years. The most expensive being the reconstruction of the carpark (at a cost of more than $70,000). We have projected for the coming twelve months the installation of an Airconditioning unit for the San Marco Ballroom at a cost of approx. $100,000 and also replacement of carpets in various areas of the club. All this is possible thanks to the excellent financial situation. I would like now to take this opportunity of thanking the members of my committee. They have worked tirelessly and given me their wholehearted support. The Ladies Auxiliary, who every year organize the Miss. Veneto Guest, and are always available to help in any situation whenever needed. Amongst the various active sectors which form the backbone of our Club, I would like to firstly mention the Bocce one of the first established and most followed group which organize prestigious tournaments throughout the year; the Tennis, which is the largest of the groups accredited with having the highest number of youth participation from our membership; the Soccer, who over the past years have come a long way to achieve the honour of being is "State League": the Shooters group, Squash, Netball, Basketball and Billiard teams I thank My heartfelt thanks go also you all. to our generous sponsors who have supported so well the many various sporting activities within our Club. My profound gratitude goes also to the Club's Choir, they truly give us reason to be proud. Requests for our Choir's performance comes from all parts of Victoria, and this is testimony to their excellent technical and artistic abilites. My thanks to the young people who form part of the Youth SubCommittee and attend our Club regularly. I sincerely thank the Club Solicitor, Cay. Loris Sartori together with the members of the Finance Sub-Committee, Comm. Duilio Barro, Mr.John Cabion and Mr.Frank Gazzola. I would like to conclude by thanking the Club Manager, Cay. Rolando di Bari and the entire staff of the Veneto Social Club, all of whom are so deserving of my gratitude . Cay. Rino Tessarotto.

Rolando Di Bari, it
Buon lavoro, Gabriella!
"Viaggiatore!

Ringraziamo in particolare i seguenti signori: Martini, Vendramin, Sperotto, Grollo, Colla, Pozzebon, Gatto, Bordin, Sgarbossa, Cellante, Bergamin e Camillo. Elsa Dal Sasso Segretaria

A tutti, arrivederci a presto.

C. Testa, presidente; W. Reffo, vice presidente; signora G. Chiocchetti, segretaria; signora A. Barolo, tesoriera; consiglieri: E. Bertollo, G. Miolo, G. Trentin, G. Bonomo, L. Zandegu, A. Zandegu, S. Zonza, L. Sinigalia, V. Associazione Trevisani nel mondo
Rina Polazzon, Umberto Masci, Sophie Dal Castello, Carlo Bernardi (tesoriere), John Colosimo (segretario), Raffaele Launech (chairman) ed it sottoscritto, John Lanzon (vice chairman).

Senior Soccer Report The last 12 months of Bulleen Veneto Soccer, has seen many changes occur in the line up of players and coaches. This has happened in retospect to the fact of the enourmous pressure that came about mainly due to the fact of threatened relegations, which were expected to happen in the State League, but which never eventuated. Last season's soccer committee found itself in a most unenviable position of having to make some very unpalatable decisions, but in the final analysis the team was successful. The Reserves, with Sam Saladino as coach, were extremely happy with their results, in particular their win of the Harry Armstrong Cup for Reserves. With the commencement of our 2nd. year in State League, we experienced the loss of some of our "seasoned" players, that chose to either, transfer or retire from the game for personal reasons. To all of these players, thank you for giving us the pleasure of watching you play. We wish you the very best in whatever you chose to do. Having said the above, we welcome to the Reserves and Seniors, the new players that have joined our club. The coaching of the Reserves for this season is our own ex-player, Ivan Stocco and the Seniors of course is in the hands of Tony Vrzina. The soccer committee is this year headed by Piero Simeoni and although we have had some resignations since the elections held after the end of the 1988 season, we are happy to say that we are still getting these people's help. The soccer grounds and facilities always need to be maintained to ensure that we are always in the forefront of the best that is available to players and supporters. With this in mind, we have had a tremendous amount of work done to the senior ground and to other amenities. The soccer committee would like to thank the men that participated in all the works that have been completed over the last few months.
The soccer ladies have, as always put in a very hard but successful year, behind the kiosk and in all areas that they have been asked to work in. This brings me to a sad observation - that is, that, with all the people that come along to both the junior and senior games, do not support us in our social endeavours. This is truly . very demoralizing to us, that work so hard to give our players some place to meet in sport and socially. We realise, that, there are many other social activities that go on at the club, but surely the sport that you support needs our consideration first before others. So let us make a concerted effort this season in deciding where our loyalties lie. This season, as in past years, has seen the unfailing suppot of our many sponsors, without whom we could not function, as a soccer community. The financial support of all our sponsors is greatly appreciated, as it indicated to us that there are people from many diversified business backgrounds that have confidence and trust in what we are endeavouring to achieve with soccer at the club. Our major sponsors of the game are Bruno and Rino Grollo - Dave Barro and Beppe Crema. In conclusion, we wish to thank the Main Veneto Social Club Committee, for their moral and financial support that it has given over the last twelve months, and which it continues to give this season. Also to the club's office staff, we extend our appreciation for their help that they often give us. To all the members of the club that have supported and followed the ups and downs of our teams, a sincere thank you and we continually look forward to seeing you at our games and social events.

Junior Soccer Report 1988 Bulleen/Veneto Juniors registered Seven teams with the Victorian Soccer Federation and had overall the best season for many years with League Runners Up in the U15 and U18 age groups. Our Under 18 also won the coverted VSF Cup against strong opposition and was truly a team of champions determined to the very end as were all of our teams. We saw definite progress and an improvement in coaching standards and did look forward with great anticipation to an even better 1989. But alas it was not to be In 1989 we failed to get the Bulleen Junior Cup off the ground, we struggled for players in practically all age groups, transfer to other clubs were coming thick and fast. Lack of co-operation and selfishness saw what was promising to be a formidable U18 side crumble away. Our little ones were struggling to field a team as a large number of past players for one reason or another gave up the game. In that age group we saw the end of an era when our stout enforcer for Equal Opportunity on the Sporting Field had to 'hang up HER boots' and was, reluctantly, converted to Tennis. Our Under 14 was completely rebuilt from the ashes after a titanic struggle in Superleague in 1988 and our coach Henry Gatt should be commented for his efforts to refloat a team which seemed for all intents and purposes doomed. In 1989 we have six teams and our playing numbers reduced to around 90 they are: Under 9 and our Under 10 trained by M. Gregorio Bono. Under 11 - Mr. Enzo Franceschini - Playing in Eastern A League. Under 12 - Mr. Claudio Yamin - Playing Northern A League. Under 14 - Mr. Henry Gatt - Playing Eastern A League. Under 16 - Mr. Dario Storgato - Ricoh Superleague. As in previous years our Club which is held in high regard in the Northern Region invited our Ull, U12 and U 13 to participate in the Northern Shield and much to their surprise our U 12 won their section. Congratulations to the boys keep up the good work. At this point in time we are only 4 games into the Championship Season with mixed results throughout our leagues much too early to make predictions and can only wish them all "Good Luck" in 1989.

Secretary's Report I think that the current social and financial year 1988/89 could be definet as historic, because never since its foundation has our club had the opportunity to act as guest for a great number of personalities from the political, religious and artistic worlds. With the celebrations of Australia's Bicentenary many 'gifts' of artistic value arrived in Australia from Italy. The `Veneti' in particular, did much to promote these initiatives and the name of the Veneto Social Club has becon— ell known and appreciated by everyone both here and in Italy. With the celebrations having drawn to a close t club activities are continuing at normal pace and members of the club still feel, above all else, an integral part of this association. The number of members has not changed significantly. According to the latest statistics we have Life members six, founding members 545, ordinary members 747, associated members 375, and honorary members 72. Since the opportunity of joining the club for the cost of only $10 was extended to young people under the age of 21, it had been hoped that many of the children of our members would themselves have taken the opportunity of becoming members. However, approximately only two dozen people took advantage of this offer. I repeat once again that the participation of youth of the second and third generation is essential for the vitality of the club. Such participation would enable forward planning, based on long term goals and policies of
'development' to be implemented, guaranteeing therefore the continuation and the success of our club. Undoubtedly there can be noted amongst our youth re-kindling of their Italian identity. It makes us proud to think that amongst the future champions of tennis, soccer, bocce, squash, billiards etc., there could be one of our 'bocia'. Let us hope for the best. Our club, under the expert guidance of the President Cay. Rino Tessarotto and the committee, can certainly look towards a glorious future. We are taking the right steps in the right direction; and for this I feel that I must thank all the members, who have given us the opportunity to bring to a close - with great satisfaction to all involved - a very action packed year. My acknowledgement and thanks is extended to cay. Rino Tessarotto who more than anyone else has been overwhelmed by inumerable chores, especially since the death of our sadly missed treasurer, Sergio Chiocchetti. A thank you to our Director cay. Di Bari and his team, to Mario Bonis, John Cobain Ketti Pezzin, for their work - carried out with generosity and dedication - in both the administrative and organizational sectors. To the committee and the members I extend my warmest congratulations for a job well done. It required much dedication and sacrifice but it has provided us with a great deal of satisfaction.

Treasurer's Report As Acting Treasurer, I present this report on the Financial Activities of the Club for the past year with a great deal of regret, as the passing of our Treasurer, Sergio Chiocchetti was a very sad loss for us all. The club has again continued to operate efficiently, providing a Trading Profit of $81,960 after allowing for abnormal expenditure of $87,458. This is represented by; car-park resurfacing $67,108, new carpet on stairs $8,300, San Marco Drapes $6,200, and the painting of the Venezia Ballroom ceiling $5,850. The net overall result is a surplus of $94,179. The Restaurant and Bar Trading figures are down by $8,921 on the previous years, although the total sales are up by $37,077. This is reflected by an increase in Food and Liquor Costs of $19,358 and Bar 8. Restaurant Wages of $24,408. Along with an increase in Club Charges and Liquor Licence Fees of $3,337, the total Trading Costs have increased by $45,998. Other Activity Income has increased by $36,082. This is represented by a healthy increase of $41,264 in Youth Functions. The Club Trading Expenses have increased by $4,860, whilst Administration Expenses have decreased by $2,296, particularly printing & Stationery which is down by $4,864. Also, Legal Fees are nil, a decrease of $4.045 being the costs incurred for Amendments to the Club's Constitution the previous financial year. Property Expenses have increased by $33,255 due mainly to Repairs 8 Maintenance costs which have increased by $23,330. These expenses are essential in maintaining the building in prime condition. The Trading Surplus of $94,179 is well down on last year's figures by $101,761. This is mainly due to the abnormal expenditure items mentioned earlier of $87,458 and a decrease of Proceeds from the Restaurant and Bar Trading of $8.921. Unfortunately, although our total income has increased by $27,161, our Overhead and Operating Expenses have also increased by $35,789. This is reflected in a decrease in the Trading Surplus of $8,628. The Trading Surplus has been supplemented by interest received of $12,612, Membership Fees $85,235 and Donations from our Ladies Auxiliary of $17,115, Less outgoing donations of $15,285 thus giving a Net Surplus of $94,179.

STATEMENT BY COMMITTEE MEMBERS (DIRECTORS)
In the opinion of the Committee of the Veneto Social Club:
1.
(a)
The accompanying Income and Expenditure Statement is drawn up so as to give a true and fair view of the results of the Club for the financial year ended 30th. April, 1989.

AUDITORS REPORT TO THE MEMBERS OF VENETO SOCIAL CLUB (A Company Limited by Guarantee)
I have audited the accompanying accounts in accordance with Australian Auditing Standards. The Club has not provided for depreciation of buildings which are included in the Balance Sheet at the cost of $1,473,150, refer Note 2. This is a departure from a Statement of Accounting Standards issued by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia and the Australian Society of Accountants. In my opinion depreciation should be charged to the Income and Expenditure Statement so as to absorb the cost of the buildings over their useful economic lives. The Club has not calculated the financial effect of this departure from the accounting standard and it is impracticable for me to estimate this. It is not practicable to establish accounting control over cash receipts and payments made in cash prior to their respective receipt or payment by Club Sub-Committees. Accordingly, it was not practicable to extend my Audit Examination of such receipts and payments beyond verification of the amounts brought to account on the basis of the net movements of bank accounts of the Sub-Committees for the year under review. Subject to this limitation, and with the exception referred to above relating to depreciating buildings, in my opinion:-
(a)
(b)
the accompanying accounts which have been prepared under the historical cost convention are properly drawn up in accordance with the provisions of the Companies (Victoria) Code and so as to give a true and fair view of:(i)
the state of affairs of the Club at 30th.Apri1,1989 and the results for the year ended on that date: and
(ii)
the other matters required by Section 269 of that Code to be dealt with in the accounts:
the accounting records and other records and registers required by the Companies (Victoria) Code to be kept by the Company have been properly kept in accordance with the provisions of that Code.

Inoltre it giovanissimo Alex Favrin, non ancora diciassettenne, ha vinto it campionato statale sotto i diciotto anni.

G. SQUASH REPORT
SQUASH CLUB President: U. CANEVA Vice President: S. ALIOTTA Treasurer: D. DESTEFANIS Secretary: J. COLEMAN The Club competes in the Pennant Competition of the Club Circuit which is one of four Metropolitan districts in the Victorian Squash Federation. The Club Circuit comprises mostly of the major private clubs in Melbourne. Two Pennant competitions are held each year; the Spring season running from August to November and the Autumn season from February to June.
SPRING PENNANT 1988 It is pleasing to report that the Club was able to increase its team entries from four to six for the Spring Pennant. A number of young players competed for the first time and performed exceptionally well. Seventeen year old Anthony Bucello and Michael Sikos were members of the Premier E Reserve Grade Team, captained by Paul De Stefanis, while Shane Dal Santo captained a young D Brade Team which was runner-up to the King's Club. The C Grade team, captained by Dominic De Stefanis, also had a successful season, finishing third, after being beaten in the semi-final by the Hawthorn Football Club. Best Players for the season were as follows:B.1 Grade K. Savaris C.1 Grade Nat Surace CR.1 Grade Chris Apswoude D.1 Grade Shane Dalsanto D.2 Grade Joe Macciocca E Reserve Anthony Bucello
CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS The Club Championships are held in July each year between the Autumn and Spring Pennant Seasons. The 1988 Champion was Sam Aliotta who defeated Shane Dal Santo in a very closely contested final. As a consolation, however, Shane took out the Handicap event, held in conjunction with the Championship, when he narrowly defeated young Anthony Bucello. These players were awarded their trophies at the Spring Carnival Dinner Dance in November.
SPRING CARNIVAL Six Clubs participated in the Squash competition arranged for the Spring Carnival. The tournament was won by the Casa D'Abruzzo which defeated Veneto 2 matches to 1.
AUTUMN PENNANT 1989 The Club entered six teams in the Autumn Pennant and this competition is now approaching the finals. With just three matches to go, two teams have excellent changes of taking out the premiership. The C4 Grade Team, captained by John Coleman is a clear leader in that Grade, having lost only one match for the Season and the D2 Grade Team, captioned by Joe Macciocca, is currently second. On a disappointing note it is sad to report that the Club is loosing the services of John Schilaci who is moving up to the Gold Coast. John has been a stalwart of the Club and was a member of many of our premiership teams. John's services will be sadly missed and we wish him and his family all the best.
THANKS The Squash Club would like to express its thanks to the Club Management and Office Staff for its assistance throughout the year and in particular thank the Bar and Kitchen staff for their excellent service, which is vital for the successful hosting of the many visiting Clubs.

Netball Report Yet again, we reach that time of year where we're askec to recap the events of the previous year. Last year was a very successful year for our senior team who took home a premiership in the second season, ending the year extremely well. The girls came up from fourth position and played in all the elimination finals and then went on to take home the flag. Our junior side performed well all year too under the coaching of Bob. Bob was brought to the Club to train the girls by one of the mothers who had taken a personal interest in the team. This was a succes as the girls really benefitted from his training and went on to play in the finals of their competition. Overall, the year as a whole, was a good one for netball in spite of all the mishaps that were encountered throughout the year. One crisis during last year was at the Spr-
ing Sports Carnival, which for the first time ever, was nothing short of a mess down at the netball courts. With teams not turning up on the day, and Clubs forfeiting matches, the whole netball schedule was thrown out, and where a total of 43 games should have been played, only half were played. However disastrous it looked on the day, we were able to arrange it all so that the teams that did show up were'nt inconvenienced in any way; and the overall result was a success. As far as this year goes, both teams are not doing as well as hoped. Both have been upgraded in their competitions and are finding the competition a bit tougher. However, both teams are persistent and it it's not this season we'll try for next to bring home the flag.

Shooters Report Con l'avvicinarsi al termine dell'anno finanziario it Veneto Social Club Shooters Subcommittee compie felicemente un altro anno di vita. Se ben ricordo, it V.S.C. Uno degli eventi piu' importanti dell'anno sarebbe it "South Eastern Zone Championship". In questa gara it Veneto S.C. Everybody is Welcome! THE SPIRIT OF THE VENETO PEOPLE
VENEZIA M .CCCC.XCVI
I
n the course of their long and eventful history, the people of the Veneto, in their social and cultural events, have always expressed important universal values which when translated into organic reality, have subsequently testified to the presence of a «Veneto civilisation». Thus in the past it was reductive to speak of an exclusively «Venetian» civilisation which grew through the imperialist expansion in Eastern territories. But it is not enough simply to demonstrate through history, that a civilisation existed. It is more knyortant and more constructive to grasp its spirit. By this we mean the sum of the human faculties of the people who breathed life into, and gave soul to, Veneto civilisation. The Veneto has a notable vocation for acting as an intermediary. Firstly out of comniercial necessity and then for cultural reasons, the Veneto has always maintaned a position of interest and curiosity towards anything new appearing along the horizon of the lagoon. The first mental characteristics, which also reflect the requirements of trade, are in fact the enthusiasm of the Veneto people and ah almost natural openess towards all races of the earth. No country or its people were considered too remote by Venetian merchants, and Marco Polo. farrfrom being an exception, belonged to a continuous stream of merchants who poured out of the Veneto to the furthest flung corners of the earth. In fact it was through a relish for trading that a respect for economic enterprise spread and prevailed in the figure of the serious, trustworthy merchant. With time this dignified merchant gradually changed into a prestigious figure. The characteristics of these new businessmen are easily recognisable as quick-wittedness in dealing and the utmost honesty. But over and above•these features, the Veneto merchants introduced a deep-felt desire for peace into civilisation as an indispensable condition or their trading activities. The vocation of Veneto civilisation for mediating revealed the direct dependence of Venice on Byzantine society. To Veneto eyes. Byzantium was a model par excellence: the real legitimate capital of the Orient which lived and experienced the State as single entity. Thus the desire to introduce Byzantine values into their own world quicky led the Veneto people to follow, in typically intellectual fashion. the peoples of the East, by importing organisational ideas to be used for a great variety of people. This is why the Venetians and therefore the Venetos. were to import not only the political and judicial sense of an organised society and a concern for diplomacy but they were even to accept and spread a sense of administrative caution. public health and welfare institutions, and solemnity in civil and us rites. In the world of
culture, Veneto civilisation's vocation for mediation vas to take on a very special character. To give a few examples we only have to mention the fact that for almost two centuries Venice was unsurpassed in quality and quantity for book-printing, and in the Veneto area at that tame the prestigious university of Padua was founded. Among the host of teachers and students who flocked to it, was the great Galileo Galilei. Another element that has played a part in the evolution of the Veneto people's spirit and mentality is their so-called «pragmatism). The most significant signs of it emerge in the held of political thinking. Unlike many other chiliqations, the Veneto practical sense has its roots not in ideal political norms but in the «practice of government», of which it had first-hand experience. Inspired by permanent, fundamental values, it was always highly effectual. On this subject it is interesting to note that more than one ambassador reported on the political balance of the Venetos, or rather a pluralism within unity. During the Republic, in fact, although the various political positions proudly conserved their individualism, they never sought separation or counterpositions but rather tried to find common points which respected all individual positions, connecting and strengthening them. And this, essentially, was the idea of the State which the Venetians gave to Veneto civilisation, and later tried to spread to the whole republic. What the Venetian political leaders proposed to the population of the Republic, was a state where the arbitrary rule of a sovereign is replacee by state laws. This allowed first the Venetian and then the Veneto system to survive and proliferate for almost ten centuries. It was an anomalous political set-up, capable of developing and adapting to changing situation without reneging its past but rather using what vitality was left There is however another observation to be made. It should be remembered that the spread of this kind of state throughout the Republic did not mean its purpose was to impose political and judicial institutions but rather, in a more general way, it showed central Government's respect for local autonomy. In fact as long as this sense of identity, which included the destinies of each individual and the state, spread in the Veneto, the Republic always had the upperhand and survived. But pragmatism, pluralism in unity. a vocation for mediation are only some features of centuries of Veneto civilisation. And behind these distinctive characteristics is a basic common denominator: coherence in continuity.

POPULAR TRADITIONS
Geographical fragmentation, continual and complex upheavals, and the amalgam of Veneto history, have endowed the region with a cultural image which is sufficiently close-knit and homogenous that it is possible to speak of a single culture. But it is just as true that the succesive settlements of Heneti, Euganeans, Etruscans and Romans, the wars, the periods of foreign rule and the consolidation of The Serenissima Republic of Venice, have all given rise to a great variety of typical customs, art, traditions and popular culture. This is why, when talking about folklore and traditions the so-called border influences cannot be neglected: the Alpago and Lower Livenza areas have felt the effects of contacts with Friuli, some parts of the Verona area have been influenced by Mantova and Lombardy, the lower Rodigina by Ferrara and some Ladino elements are present in alpine areas such as the Cadore. Common to all areas, however, is the Veneto spirit Simple, open, gentle and friendly, it is expressed in the spoken 11 language which can be traced back to its Venetian source, 11 which is rich in fluent, melodious, sing-song inflections. But it is only natural that, in such a vast area which includes mountains, hills, plains and lagoons completely different forms of social life and habitats have developed. One only has to look at the different kinds of buildings. If, on one hand, on the coast people had to compete with the sea for land, and buildings were closely constructed on narrow plots, on the other hand it is clear that in the mountains, to face up to common environmental adversity, people grouped together round a single hearth under the same root In this way diversified building typologies are to be found in different areas: in the mountains, materials such as wood and stone are used; in the plains - bricks; in the estuaries and delta - cane frames; and in the valleys and foothills - stone. Similarly, different forms of social life clevelopeu and these gave rise to rules and statutes which came to govern local usages and customs. Here a,-•e some examples: in the cities, the arts and crafts guilds. wer- run according to codes known as «mariegole»; in the mountains. a «Rodolo» or roll established that woods and pastures were a common heritage and were to be used according to a rotation system, while at Caorle the fishermen united to organise the division of sea areas. Religion too, has an important role to play and it is significant that in the last century the Veneto has provided three Popes for the Holy Roman Church: Saint Pius Xth from Treviso, John XXIIIrd. from Bergamo in the «Lombardie Venete», who was once the Patriarch of Venice as was Pope Luciani, John Paul I from Belluno. Religious devotion is still very much alive in the Veneto and is manifested in a number of ways. In the case of a danger-being averted, it is still the custom to place the saint, invoked by the ex-voto. on the altar. in the form of painted tablets or silver human figures. Some catholic festivals are still full of magic overtones or esoteric symbolism. One such festival in the Vicenza, area is the feast of San Giovanni where a myriad of fires is lit Others include the feasts of San Valentino, the Rosary and San Martin which take place in the Verona area. There are annual pilgrimages to the Basilica of St. Anthony in Padua in June, and the third week of September sees the feast of the Church of the Salute in Venice. The feast for the Basilica on Mt. Berico is celebrated in Vicenza in the first week of September. Along with these religious celebrations
are the vestiges of pagan traditions. the re-awakening of superstitions and beliefs. Among the many examples are: the relative who sleeps in the nuptial bed for a few days before a wedding so as to ward off evil spirits before the bride arrives, or the burning of oil and blessed olive leaves during a storm, or predicting the quality of harvests from the flames of the Epiphany bonfire. On the nights of Epiphany, mid-lent and San Giovanni. figures such as witches, elves and demons are burned on bonfires. On bush, faggot and stubble stacks. witches burn while songs are sung all round the fire. and Yin brute - aromatic. sugared hot wine - is drunk. In addition to Christmas and Santa. Lucia. Epiphany is also a time for gifts and the youngest children. in party dress, go round the houses asking for sweets and small change. Two important events take place in Venice: the feast of the Redentore and the Historic Regatta The former is held in mid-July: after a pilgrimage across the votive bridge leading to the Church of the Redentore to give a votive offering against the plague, the whole of Venice takes to gondolas for a firework display. The world-famous Historic Regatta is held in the first week of September. Mention should also be made of the Veneto Palios whose season begins at the end of February with th Green Flag in Verona. when 14 horsemen. armed with spears and swords. and 7 archers confront each other in the name of the seven quarters of the city. But certainly the most important Palio takes place in Marostica on the first Saturday and Sunday of September. Set in one of the most beautiful and majestic Scaligere fortresses, a famous chess game is played. on a board that was built into the square centuries ago. with real people dressed as queens. pawns. knights. castles and bishops. And of course there is the splendid carnival when thousands of masked people flock to the streets and squares of Venice. Verona. too. has a carnival. But it is only one among hosts of other events, known as sagras. which spontaneously follow one after the other and are far from being conceived only for tourists.

ATTRACTING MIGRANT GROUPS TO SCOUTING VENETO SOCIAL CLUB TO TAKE THE LEAD Scout Association officials in the Doncaster West District are blazing the trail in the field of ethnic relations. An initiative to attract more members from ethnic groups to their ranks began with a meeting of Representative of the Scout Association and the local Italian Community at the Veneto Social Club in Bulleen on April 20. Official approval for the scheme has come through the president of the Scout Association, Sir James Gobbo, who is a member of the Veneto Club himself, and the Chief Commissioner, Dr. William Wells. Sir Gobbo and Dr. Wells attended the initial meeting with the District Commissioner Stan Gurvin and Cr. Doug Mc Kenzie who have spearheaded the ethnic overtures in the Doncaster West District. Representative from the Italian Community included Mr. Rino Tessarotto, president of the Veneto Social Club. The Scout Association has recognised for some time that young people from non-English speaking origins do not participate in Scouting to the same extent as youth from English speaking backgrounds.

Scouting is educational and recreational, and provides young people with the opportunity to take part in adventurous, exciting and challenging activities such as canoeing, abseiling and rock climbing. As Scouting is a world wide movement, with membership spanning over one hundred and fifty different countries, the Association is mo, e than keen to encourage youth from all nationalities to participate in the wide range of activities Scouting can offer. "The Scout movement is the most successful youth mopvement in Australia" Sir Gobbo said. "however, the fact remains, with some exceptions, that those of recent migrant origin do not appear to participate in the movement as much as those from longer settled groups in Australia."
The wider implications of this local initiative for the Scout Association were spelled out by it's president. "It's not intended that this be confined to the Italian Community," he explained. "The Scout Association is keen to produce something along these lines for migrant groups generally."
District Commissioner, Mr. Stan Gurvis, traced the origins of the present overture to a Development seminar organised by the Doncaster West District over a year ago. The purpose of the seminar was to find out what issues they had to address in their ethnic of multicultural society, Mr. Garvis said. A prominent figure in that discussion was Cr. Mc Kenzie who was, at that time, Mayor of the City of Doncaster and Templestowe and assistant District Commissioner for Public Relations and Development in the Scouts. Cr. Mac Kenzie has recently retired from Scouting but is continuing to assist Mr. Garvis with the ethnic project. Mr. Gurvis explained the initiative was directed at the Italian Community in the first instance as the Veneto Club provided a concrete venue to meet. He said it would now include people of al ethnic communities. He said the organisers had noted that a high number of Chinese people moving into the Doncaster, Templestowe and Bulleen areas. To raise the level of community awareness of the Scout Association, approaches will be made to schools to seek their co-operation in presenting videos and information on Scouting to students. Mr. Gurvis said the information would also be disseminated among parents to break down a lot of misconceptions that existed in relation to the Association. Reaction in the Italian Community has been positive. Mr. Tessarotto commented that the Italian people who had emigrated to Australia had largely forgotten about Scouting as a recreational option for their children.
Veneto S.C. - Relazione Annuale 1988/1989 PAGINA 60
He said that they had to start again from the beginning. The problems was convincing the people to get the kids from the second generation to join, he said. He listed a number of ways in which the Veneto Club planned to encourage parents to do this. A spokesperson at the Department of Ethnic Affairs said the Minister, Mr. Andrew McCutcheon, was delighted to hear of the action being taken by the Doncaster West District.
