The Veneto Social Club has been, for many years, one of the leading organisations within Melbourne's large Italian community.

Its original concept was to provide assistance for migrants from the Veneto region and to give them the opportunity to maintain and foster the cultural links and traditions of their homeland.

From these humble beginnings, the Club achieved its dream of ten years ago, when it moved into its new premises at Bulleen in a pleasant country setting. Since then, the Veneto Social Club has grown greatly, offering its members and their friends a wide range of recreational, cultural and social activities.

On behalf of the Victorian Government, I would like to congratulate the Club on its 10th Anniversary in its new home and wish it even greater success in the future.

La ricorrenza del decimo Anniversario dell'inaugurazione della sede del Veneto Club, mi concede la graditissima opportunity di far pervenire al Presidente, al Comitato e ai Membri tutti dell'Associazione le mie piu profonde e sincere congratulazioni per tale importante traguardo raggiunto.

E con ci6 non intendo limitarmi soltanto all'apprezzamento della feconda attivita svolta e dei lusinghieri risultati ottenuti dal sodalizio in questi dieci anni di vita, ma desidero altresiin tale apprezzamento sottolineare l'indiscusso valore del fatto che i Veneti di Melbourne hanno realizzato e sviluppato un Club che li riunisce in un centro elegante ed accogliente che 6 motivo di orgoglio per tutti quanti gli italiani del. Victoria.

Nell'augurare al Veneto Club ogni successo nella sua attivita futura, che pu6 solidamente gia basarsi su dieci anni trascorsi in costruttivo lavoro, confermo al. INTRODUZIONE

L'intento di questa opera, che presentiamo a tutti i soci con un certo orgoglio, e quello di ricordare it primo decennale del nostro Club.

Ma questo lavoro deve nel contempo rappresentare anche un punto della storia stessa di tutto it nostro sodalizio.

Un riassunto che fermi nel tempo i ricordi di un'impresa vissuta insieme. Un'impresa che ci ha ripagato di tutti i sacrifici, che ci ha colmato di soddisfazioni e che ha premiato la costanza e la laboriosita di not veneti delle Tre Venezie.

Infatti con ci6 che abbiamo realizzato fino ad oggi, possiamo dare chiara dimostrazione di quanto abbiamo potuto con l'unita e la collaborazione di ciascuno.

Il nostro Club servira di esempio ai nostri figli per ricordare loro le nobili origini della nostra stirpe. La nostra opera sara it simbolo di quanto abbiamo saputo fare nell'inserirci in una civilta diversa e di quanto ad essa abbiamo saputo dare.

In questo libro che presentiamo abbiamo cercato di essere brevi ma it piu precisi possibile. A tale scopo abbiamo chiesto la collaborazione di tutti i soci che fossero in grado di fornirci le notizie pi6 diverse che in un modo o nell'altro riguardassero la storia del nostro sodalizio.

Sicuramente, come tutte le opere umane, anche questa presenters delle inevitabili lacune.

Ci perdoni.no i lettori se ne riscontreranno alcune e, nell'eventualita, non ne facciano oggetto di indiscriminata critica. Come nell'unione abbiamo eretto la nostra sede, cosi potremmo rivedere questa nostra opera per riprodurne un'altra pi6 perfetta in una prossima occasione che certo non manchera.

DALL'IDEA ALLA SEDE

INTRODUZIONE

Nell'accingermi a riscrivere, o meglio, se si vuole precisare maggiormente it significato di questo mio lavoro, a scrivere in senso cronologico, con una selezione dei fatti piu salienti, gli avvenimenti inerenti alla costituzione ed allo sviluppo del Club dei Veneti di Melbourne, ho pensato phi opportune chiamare it testo stesso "Storiografia del Veneto Social Club" anziche Storia dello stesso.

Ci6 non per ostentare una terminologia esibizionistica, ma semplicemente perche termine di "storia" sarebbe stato improprio per la mancanza della conoscenza di quei fatti prettamente umani che it sottoscritto ignora.

Tutti i dati riportati nel racconto sono stati infatti dedotti dagli archivi del Club stesso ricercandoli in vecchie pubblicazioni ed a volte anche deducendoli da semplici didascalie trascritte sotto alcune fotografie.

Un altro fattore che ha influito negativamente sul lavoro dello scrivente e stato anche it tempo a disposizione per it compimento dell'opera che purtroppo era alquanto limitato.

Si prega pertanto it lettore di comprendere e scusare alcune manchevolezze che nel racconto potranno essere eventualmente riscontrate.

Storiografia del Club

DALL'IDEA ALLA SEDE

Lungo le rive del fiume Yarra in una distesa di verde, quasi selvaggia, si erge imponente una costruzione di cemento armato.

Dal disegno moderno un po' avveniristico spicca solitaria in contrasto con la natura circostante.

Sul fronte, rivolta verso la strada, una grandiosa vetrata termina con in alto incisa nella cornice di cemento la prestigiosa sigla "V.S.C.". Una gondola veneziana galleggia sola in una piccola vasca quale cimelio di una civilta piu antica e lontana.

Questo e ci6 che appare oggi agli occhi del visitatore che si avvicina all'entrata della residenza del Club dei veneti di Melbourne.

Ma dentro questa costruzione imponente, quasi fredda dall'esterno, palpita una vita piena di calore paesano. Si racchiudono in essa le piu antiche e le piu nobili tradizioni di un popolo che, proveniente da una vasta regione italiana, ha trapiantato in Melbourne, la sua vita, le sue speranze, i.l suo avvenire.

Un popolo laborioso e generoso, con una tradizione millenaria che, inserendosi in una civilta diversa, riemerge imponendo la sua storia come valore di vita da condividere e rispettare.

Ma gli inizi non furono facili. Doveva nascere l'idea, doveva crearsi l'organizzazione, e doveva soprattutto trovarsi l'unione fra di loro, sparsi in una vasta metropoli con interessi diversi.

Molto spesso le piu grandi opere umane nascono dal.le cose pi.0 semplici. I veneti hanno una tradizione che si sono portati in Australia quale parte del loro bagaglio culturale: la partita a bocce con gli amici dopo i.l lavoro.

Quel.lo sport semplice, senza ne lussi ne pretese, che rievocava le abitudini paesane nelle giornate di festa, doveva essere proprio i.l fulcro che produceva la spinta a quell'organizzazione che oggi e it Veneto Social Club.

A farsi un bicchier di vino, a scambiar due chiacchiere giocando una partita a bocce, si ritrovavano dopo it lavoro alcuni veneti di Melbourne.

Along the banks of the Yarra in an almost wild vastness of green, juts out imposingly a construction of reinforced concrete.

Its modern architectural design, somewhat avant-garde, makes it stand out from the contrasting surrounding nature. At the front,facing the road, a stately glass window culminates with carved high above it, in the concrete cornice, the prestigious initials of "V.S.C.".

A lonely Venetian gondola floats in a small pond as a relic of a past and ancient civilization.

This nowdays, is what confronts the eyes of the visitor who approaches the entrance to the residence of Melbourne Club for the Veneti.

But inside this imposing construction, almost uninviting from the outside, throbs a life full of family warmth. Within its walls are enclosed the most ancient and most noble traditions of a people, who, coming from a large Italian region, have transplanted in Melbourne their life, their hopes and their future.

A hard working and generous people, with a thousand-yearold tradition who, by inserting themselves in a different civilization, have re-emerged asserting their own history as a valuable part of life to be shared and respected.

But the beginning was not easy. The idea had to be conceived, the organization had to be created, and most of all a common interest had to be found amongst them, who were spread in a vast metropolis, all with differenct interests.

Very often the greatest human achievments are conceived from the most simple things.

The Veneti have a tradition which they have brought to Australia as part of their culture: the game of bocce with friends after work.

That simple sport, free from luxury or pretences, that recalled the rural custo ms during days of festivity, had to be the focal point which induced the beginning of that organization which is

Questo gioco pressoche sconosciuto in Australia non offriva nulla di meglio che un piccolo campo circondato da vecchie e rugginose lamiere che loro stessi si erano preparati. Quella situazione misera e sconfortevole li riempiva di tristezza ed in cuor loro vi era it desiderio di riemergere, anche socialmente oltre che nel lavoro.

Melbourne con la sua vita tipicamente anglosassone era pieno di club privati, di organizzazioni chiuse alle loro tradi.zioni, dove era difficile inserirsi e dove comunque non si sarebbe potuto

There where in Melbourne some Veneti who would meet, after work, to have a glass of wine and a chat over a game of bocce. Amongst them were Nino Bettiol, Aldo Saretta, Riccardo Crema,Angelo Silvestrini and Valerio Celotto.

The meeting place was squalid, but after all, there was nowhere else to go and play bocce.

This game, which was almost unkown in Australia, offered nothing more than a small field surrounded by old and rusty metal plates which they had constructed. This miserable and discouraging situation filled them with sadness, and in their hearts grew the desire to re-emerge socially and not just in their work.

Melbourne, with its typically Anglo-Saxon way of life was full of

neppure parlare la propria lingua.

Perche dunque sullo stesso modello anglosassone anche loro non avrebbero potuto crearsi un circolo?

Questaful'achemise inmate, tattal'orgardzzazione. Era l'aprile del 1966. tin gnippo di veneti si organizzA5 subito ed in breve tempo trovd l'appoggio e la simpatia di un numero inaspettato di corregionali.

Da quel momento la macchina fu in moto e come vedremo non si fermera pia. primo obiettivo era quello di trovare un terreno dove costruirvi la futura sede. A tale scopo si costitui un comitato provvisorio che fu composto dalle seguenti persone: Nino Bettiol, Lino Bettiol, Romeo Schiavon, Duilio Barro, Oreste Barro, Riccardo Crema, Angelo Silvestrini e Rino Bergamin.

This was the idea that set in motion the entire organization. It was in April 1966.

A social group was formed by some Veneti, and within a short time it found the support and approval by an unexpected number of people from the same region.

From that moment the process was set in motion and, as we shall see, never to stop.

The first objective was to find a block

Era per6 necessario muoversi subito quindi fu indetta la prima riunione.

Ospit6 questo primo gruppo di pionieri ii Sig. Secondo Bettiol nella sua abitazione di Ringwood e sotto la direzione di. Duilio Barro si ebbe la prima riunione ufficiale del comitato provvisorio del Veneto Club. La seconda riunione segui a breve distanza in casa del Sig. Bergamin dove con l'adesione di altre cinque persone fu stabilito definitivamente it comitato direttivo del Veneto Club a 13 membri. In quell'occasione fu eletto Nino Bettiol presidente provvisorio dell'associazione. Il compito di vice-presidente venne affidato a Rino Bergamin; la carica di tesoriere and6 ad Aldo Saretta e Frank Marchesin si assunse it gravoso compito di segretario.

Al vedersi concretizzare in cosi breve spazio di tempo ci6 che prima sembrava soltanto un'utopia, gli animi si riempirono di entusiasmo tanto che avrebbero voluto precedere i tempi. Il presidente provvisorio infatti avanzava la proposta affinch6 ogni membro del comitato versasse $2000 quale anticipo di cassa per sopperire alle pi.0 urgenti spese dell'associazione. La proposta fu per6 cautamente bocciata.

Ci6 nonostante l'attivita del comitato continuava freneticamente ed alla terza riunione, sempre in casa di. Rino Bergamin it presidente provvisorio Nino Bettiol rassegnava le dimissioni. Gli succedette Duilio Barro che vedremo per lungo tempo guidare con successo le sorti dell'associazione. Il nuovo presidente proponeva alla carica di segretario sociale Rino Pozzebon per sostituire

This first group of pioneers was hosted

by Mr. Secondo Bettiol at his house in Ringwood, and, under the direction of David Barro, the first official meeting of the provisional committee of the Veneto Club took place.

The second meeting followed shortly after. It was held in Mr. Bergamin's house where, with the assent of five other people, the managing committee of the Veneto Club, comprising of 13 members, was properly established.

During that meeting Nino Bettiol was elected as provisional president.

The position of vice-president was given to Rino Bergamin; the assignment of treasurer went to Aldo Saretta and Frank Marchesin took on the burdensome task of secretary.

Witnessing the realization, in such a short span of time, of something that previously seemed only a dream, filled everyone with extreme enthusiasm; so much so that they would have like to have jumped ahead of time.

In fact, the provisional president advanced the proposal that each member of the committee pay $2000 in a deposit fund, to provide for the most urgent expenses of the association. This proposal, however, was cautiously rejected.

Nevertheless the activities of the

Ma questi rimestamenti nel direttivo non impedivano i.l progredire dei lavori che anzi, a breve distanza di tempo, gia nella quarta riunione indetta in casa di Mario Bonis, davano luogo al varo della prima attivita sociale.

Il primo degli innumerevoli successi dell'organizzazione veneta ebbe luogo it 27-5-1967 alla Capocabana Hall in una serata danzante dove 1 'entusiasmo sail alle stelle.

I partecipanti si sfogarono in danze e cori paesani fino a tarda sera.

0rmai l'associazione era formata e da quel momento non fece altro che progredire.

Il 10 agosto 1967 fu indetta la prima assemblea generale dei soci dove fu adottata la prima costituzione sociale e fu eletto ufficialmente dalla maggioranza it primo comitato direttivo.

Questo fu composto come segue: Duilio Barro (Presidente), Rino Bergamin (Vice-presidente), Franco Marchesin (Segretario), Aldo Saretta (Tesoriere), Rino Pozzebon (Segretario Sociale), e i seguenti consiglieri: Mario Bonis, Riccardo Crema, Nino Bettiol, Claudio Dall'Oste, Angelo Silvestrini, Oreste Barro, Lino Bettiol e Romeo Shiavom.

Cappel.lano del Veneto Club venne noiinato Padre Giuliano Cavarzan.

0rmai ii gruppo era saldo e nume so e le feste si susseguirono con sem re maggiore frequenza e ben riuscite.

Autorita australiane ed italiane simpatizzavano per questo gruppo di veneti e non disdicevano i vari inviti. In quell'anno la comunita italiana, organizzata dal giornale "Il Globo", si era inserita nel concorso di bellezza nazionale che aveva scopi di beneficienza. gruppo dei veneti capi che non poteva negare la sua partecipazione e nonostante che la loro agognata meta fosse al momento l'acquisto di un terreno per la loro sede, si organizzo comunque in fretta e vi partecip6 con successo.

Al ballo indetto al proposito it 15 settembre 1967 una rosa di sette concorrenti si cimento nel concorso. La prima "Miss Veneto" fu la Sig.na Luigina Spadetto e la prima "Miss Veneto Charity Queen" fu la Sig.na Alves Marcolin. I fondi raccolti per beneficienza dalle sette ragazze venete portarono la Miss Charity Queen a classificarsi terza nel contesto di tutta la comunita italiana di Melbourne. A questo ballo, tenutosi 16

He was succeeded by David Barro whom we will see successfully guide, for a long period of time, the developements of the association. The new president proposed that the position of social secretary be assigned to Rino Pozzebon, as a replacement to Valerio Celotto who had also resigned at the same time as Claudio Dall'Oste.

But this reshuffling of management did not affect the progress of activities.

Instead, within a short time, at only the fourth meeting held in Mario Bonis' house, they were deciding a date for the launching of the first social activity.

The first of the innumerable successes of the Venetian Organisation took place on the 25-5-1967 at the Capocabana Hall.

The function was a dinner dance and the enthusiasm it created was magnificent.

The guests thoroughtly indulged in dancing and folk singing till a very late hour.

By now the organization was fully established and from that moment on, it did nothing but progress.

The members' first general assembly was held on the 10th August, 1967, where the first social constitution was adopted and the first managing committee was officially elected by the majority.

alla "San Remo Ballroom" erano presenti l'on. B.Snedden, l'allora ministro dell'immigrazione, i.l Dott.Sorani, direttore dell'Istituto Italiano di Cultura, in rappresentanza del Console Generale d'Italia a Melbourne.

Anche questo successo dimostrava gia la capacita organizzativa dei veneti e preludeva i successi futuri.

Molte ricorrenze che il Club festeggia ancora oggi furono istituite in quei primi anni di associazione, come il

picnic natalizio, it ballo mascherato e la castagnata.

Intanto le mogli dei soci che fin dall'inizi.o avevano dato la loro solidarieta nel collaborare all'organizzazione di tutte le feste, si costituivano nel febbraio 1968 in sotto-comitato femminile col nome di "Ladies Auxiliary".

Questo gruppo di signore si vedra in futuro come l'anima operatrice di tutte le manifestazioni sociali del Club, fino ad esserne parte integrante ed essenziale.

L'acquisto del terreno, primo passo verso un solido sviluppo dell'associazione, non poteva ormai pits tardare. Infatti, il 30 maggio 1968, dopo un'assemblea generale dei soci, l'allora presidente Duilio Barro firmava it contratto di acquisto di un appezzamento di terreno di circa 16 acri a Bulleen dove oggi sorge la prestigiosa sede del sodalizio.

Il 30 maggio 1969 il Club eleggeva it suo secondo direttivo riconfermando alla presidenza it Sig.Duilio Barro che convocava per il 28 novembre dello stesso anno un'assemblea generale straordinaria dei soci dove si approvava all'unanimita la decisione di procedere senza indugi alla costruzione della Sede.

This committee was made up as follows: David Barro (President), Rino Bergamin (Vice-President), Franco Marchesin (secretary), Aldo Saretta (Treasurer), Rino Pozzebon (Social Secretary), and with the following counsellors: Mario Bonis, Riccardo Crema, Nino Bettiol, Claudion Dall'Oste, Angelo Silvestrini, Oreste Barro, Lino Bettiol and Romeo Schiavon.

Father Giuliano Cavarzan was nominated as Chaplain of the Veneto Club. By now the goup was firmly established with a large number of members,and the social functions followed each other more and more frequently with great success.

Australian and Italian authorities sympathized with this group of Veneti and did not turn down the various invitatduring that year the Italian ions. community, organized by the newspaper "Il Globo", participated in the national beauty contest which was for charity purposes.

The Veneto organization realized that it could not fail to participate and although its desired aim was to purchase land to build its centre, it speedly organized itself and participated succSeven girls competed in the essfully. contest at the Charity Ball, held on the 15th September, 1967. The first "Miss Veneto" was Miss Luigina Spadetto and the first"Miss Veneto Charity Queen" The charity was Miss Alves Marcolin. funds collected by the seven girls enabled the Miss Charity Queen to reach third place in Melbourne's Italian Community Contest. At this ball, held at the "San Remo Ballroom", were present the Honourable Sir Billy Snedden, who was then Immigration Minister; and Dr. Sorani, director of the Italian Consulate General in Melbourne.

In seguito a tale approvazione it Club doveva darsi una forma giuridica piu adatta alle sue funzioni e responsabilita civili. Pertanto fu indetta una seconda assemblea generale per it 25 marzo 1970 dove si approvava la nuova costituzione e il. sodalizio assumeva la forma di compagnia secondo le leggi del Victoria con it nome di "Veneto Social Club".

La costituzione sociale, tutt'oggi in vigore, fu sottoscritta alla presenza dell'avv. L.F.Sartori di Coburg it 21 luglio 1970. I sottoscriventi furono: Duilio Barro, Rino Pozzebon, Aldo Saretta, Floriano Marchesin, Mario Bonis, Rino Bergamin, Edo Bettiol, Tommaso Agnoletti, Nino Bettiol, Lino Bettiol, Angelo Silvestrin, Oreste Barro e Giovanni Scomparin. periodo della costruzione della sede fu uno dei piu travagliati dell'associazione. Il progetto affidato all'architetto Erminio Smrekar fu borioso. I1 comitato allora in carica discusse piu volte l'approvazione dei vari disegni proposti. Intanto si dovevano convincere le autorita locali per ottenere it permesso di costruzione nel terreno acquistato che era zona alluvionale. Finalmente l'ente preposto, it "Town Planning and Board of Works" dava la sua approvazione ed it secondo progetto dell'architetto Smrekar era' quello definitivo che oggi ammiriamo realizzato.

Ma tali pratiche burocratiche avevano gia assorbito 18 mesi di laboriosa attivita.

This success already demonstrated the organizational skill of the Veneti and served as a prelude to future successes.

Many functions that the Club still celebrates today were instituted during those first years of their association; for example the Christmas Picnic, the Fancy Dress Ball and the Castagnata.

Meanwhile the members' wives, who from the start had firmly contributed to the organization of all the social functions, in February 1968 constituted a ladies sub-committee, under the name of "The Ladies-Auxiliary". This group of ladies will prove themselves as the future back -bone of all the Club's social functions up to the point of becoming an integral and essential part of the organization.

The purchase of the land, the first step towards a solid developement of the association, could no longer be delayed. In fact, on the 30th May 1968, following a general assembly of the members, the then president,David Barro, signed the contract of sale for the purchase of a 16 acre lot of land in Bulleen, where the prestigious centre of the Club stands today.

On the 30th May, 1969, the Club elected its second managing committee, reconforming Mr.David Barro to the presidency.

Meanwhile Mr. Barro was convening an extraordinary general assembly of members where unanimous approval was being given to the decision of proceeding, without further ado, with the construction of the Centre. As a result of the above, the Club had to assume a new legal status more suited to its civil functions and responsibilities. Hence a second general assembly was called for the 25th March, 1970 where the new constitution was approved; thus the Club became a Company according to VictorianState law, with the name of "Veneto Social Club". The social constitution, still in existence today, was signed in the presence of a lawyer, Mr. L.F. Sartori of Coburg, on the 21st of July, 1970.

The subscribers were: David Barro, Rino Pozzebon, Aldo Saretta, Floriano Marchesin, Mario Bonis, Rino Bergamin, Edo Bettiol, Tommaso Agnoletti Nino Bettiol, Lino Bettiol, Angelo Silvestrin, Oreste Barro and Giovanni Scomparin.

The period during the centre's construction was one of the most troubled for the association.The project assigned to the architect Erminio Smrekar, was a laborious one. The committee

La ditta appaltatrice fu la Bettiol Constructions che it 27 luglio 1972 gettava le fondamenta per l'imponente costruzione. Il Veneto Social. Club si riserv6 i.l diritto di sub-appaltare parte dei lavori cosi che nell'ottobre dello stesso anno incaric6 la ditta Camillo Bros. di iniziare la struttura sopra elevata in cemento armato. Da quel momento la cooperazione dei soci fu grandiosa. Ognuno offri come poteva tutto ci6 che poteva. Mano d'opera gratuita afflul numerosissima. Diversi soci titolari di imprese edili offrirono materiali e macchinari senza risparmiarsi.

La cooperazione e la solidarieta dei veneti in quel periodo fu tale che non potra mai essere dimenticata. Quel grandioso progetto che a quel tempo raggiungeva la vertiginosa cifra di tre quarti di milione di dollari, si pote realizzare solo grazie alla cooperazione, alla laboriosita ed al coraggio che i soci del Club, mai uniti come allora, dimostrarono di possedere.

Finally, the Town Planning and Board of Works gave its approval and Smrekar's second architectural project became the chosen plan which we today admiringly witness, however, all the bureaucratic wrangling had taken up 18 months of labThe contract of work orious activity. was finalized and a sub-committee, headed by Tommaso Agnoletti, was established to supervize and co-ordiante its progression.

The construction company was Bettiol Constructions who, on the 27th July 1972 were laying down the foundations for The Veneto the stately construction.

Social Club reserved the right to subcontract part of the work, so that in October of the same year it employed Camillo Bros. to begin the aboveground structure in reinforced concrete. From that moment on the members' co-operation was great with everyone offering their full support. The amount of free manpower abounded and various members, who were building contractors, offered materials and machinery without recourse The co-operation and solidarity of the Veneti during that period was so great that it will never be forgotten. The majestic project, which at the time reached the startling sum of three quarters of a million dollars, could only have been realized thanks to the co-operation, the hardship and the courage portrayed by the members of the Club, who had never before been so united.

I soci fondatori apportarono it loro contributo finanziario, altri soci investirono somme di denaro come obbligazioni e gli enti finanziari come la Commonwealth Bank e la C.U.B., di fronte a tale entusiasmo non esitarono a dare it loro contributo, garantiti anche da diversi soci.

Anche le attivita sociali continuarono ed ebbero anch'esse it loro merito per l'apporto di fondi alla costruenda sede.

Tutto questo sforzo comune, diretto dal1'allora validissimo presidente Duilio Barro, porto finalmente alla realizzazione dell 'ambito sogno dei veneti di Melbourne.

L'8 dicembre 1973 si ebbe l'apertura ufficiale della Sede alla presenza di un pubblico di circa tremila persone.

Il nastro tricolore fu tagliato dall'on.

B.Snedden, leader liberale nel Parlamento Federale Australiano, mentre it Vescovo ausiliario Mons.Prkins benediva la nuova casa dei veneti.

Alla cerimonia d'apertura a cui erano presenti tutte le maggiori autorita politiche australiane ed itali.ane pronunciarono it discorso augurale, oltre all'on.Snedden, l'ambasciatore d'Italia in Australia Dott.P.Canale e it presidente del Club, Duilio Barro.

Un telegramma di felicitazioni es,auguri pervenne dall'allora Presidente del Consiglio Italiano, i.l vicentino Mariano Rumor.

Da quella data sono ormai trascorsi dieci anni ed it Veneto Social Club 6 diventato sempre pit/ grande' ed ha degnamente rappresentato i valori culturali e civili, non solo della comunita veneta, ma di tutti gli italiani di. Melbourne.

This united effort directed by the extremely efficient president, David Barro, finally brought about the realization of a dream common amongst all the Veneti of Melbourne.

The official opening of the Club was held on the 8th of December 1973 in front of a crowd of three thousand people.

A ribbon with the Italian Colours was cut by the Honourable Sir Billy Snedden, leader of the Liberal party at the Federal level, and the new house of the Veneti was blessed by the Bishop Mons. Perkins.

Many Australian and Italian political authorities were present at the opening ceremony and the opening speeches were made by Sir Billy Snedden, the Italian Ambassador in Australia Dr. P. Canale and the President of the Club, David Barro.

A congratulatory telegram arrived from the Italian Prime Minister, a Vicentino, Mariano Rumor.

Since that date, ten years have passed and the Veneto Social Club It has has grown bigger and bigger. justly represented the cultural and civil values, not only of the Venetian community, but of all the Italians in Melbourne.

Duilio Barro Primo Presidente Ufficiale dal 1967 alle sue dimissioni volontarie nel 1975

I am honoured to have the opportunity to include a few words on the history of the Club in this publication for the "10th Anniversary of the Opening of the Veneto Social Club".

The Italians, especially the Veneti, love companionship, and somehow or other for them to get together the answer was to form a Club.

We started talk on these lines and then things became more serious.

We at first met briefly, then formed a small formal Committee, and at 8.00 p.m. one night each of us placed $ 2.00 into petty cash to pay for stamps, correspondence and books to keep, the records. From that point we engaged a Club Solicitor, Mr.L.Sartori, and an Auditor, Mr.F.Gazzola, and then a full. Committee of 13 was formed. The Club's Constitution began to be formed.

I was the first President of the Club since its foundation in 1967, and after eight years as President and nine Annual Reports, I resigned in 1975. I had achieved the goal I promised to the Club's Members, and it was time to give someone else the opportunity to be the President and maybe new ideas could be devoloped. However, I remained as Chairman of the Finance Committee until 1982, and I am still a Trustee of the Club.

Very briefly, the first move was to buy land. At the time most of the Italian people lived in Carlton and surrounding areas, so we had to pick an "area". Some of the Committee had small ideas in small areas, others had more vision and looked 20 years ahead.

The decision was made to purchase land East of Melbourne, preferably along the Yarra River. After much searching, I suggested to my Committee that we purchase 20 acres of low land near the Banksi.a Street Bridge. Application was made through the Club's Solicitor for a permit to build a Club.

The mail, instead of coming to us, went to the owner of the land and he capitalised on this information. Through his Agent, he said to me and the Club's Solicitor, that we must pay cash immediately or the sale of the property would be off.

I said I couldn't pay cash until we had a Committee Meeting and General Meeting, which would take about three weeks.

Because a deposit was required immediately I had no alternative on the advice of our Solicitor but to not purchase the property as we had no consent from the Committee and Members.

More research was done and I recommended to my Committee a new 16 acre, low undulating site along the Yarra River in Bulleen Road, Bulleen. The Committee accepted this in principle and soon after this was put to the Members at a General Meeting and all voted in favour.

The Club started to "hot up" looking for members to generate cash.

Everyone had to be happy about us building a Club, so after long, arduos battles with Local Government, Churches, Schools etc., and Court Appeals with the Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works, a permit was finally granted.

ject and a rough estimate of the cost was made. We had only one tenth of the required capital in cash for the building and inflation was rising and rising.

The Committee immediately launched a campaign to get Foundation Members for the Club at $ 200 each with no interest, which we promised would be repaid in ten years.

Some of these people had to go without their holidays or Sunday outings to meet this payment. In those days $ 200 was a lot of money for many families.

This Foundation money was the deposit which was used to raise the balance of the money through the Commonwealth Bank and Carlton and United Breweries to build the Club.

I knew that if we raised the money and built the Club fast enough, inflation would pay a portion of it, but most of all I backed the members more than the money.

The Club was built very quickly by the Builder and through the voluntary help of the Committee, Building Committee and the Members and their friends, ready for the opening on 8 December 1973.

During the period of construction Liquor Licence Applications were lodged. A hell of a lot of work and time with reams of paperwork, meetings with Liquor Licence Commissioners had to be carried out to obtain a Licence. This was no easy task in those days.

I was very lucky that the Committee and Members had a lot of respect for me and followed me with the utmost loyalty right through to the completion of the Club.

This is only a small part of the history of the Club.

The Club will always remain in a green area, never built in and with beautiful surroundings along the Yarra River.

It is a Club of which we are all extremely proud, and the culture and traditions of the Veneti will be maintained for future generations.

Dopo alcuni anni quale membro del comitato direttivo, e dopo essere stato vice-presidente, venivo eletto alla presidenza del sodalizio nel 1976.

L'essere stato a capo del Veneto Social.

Club 6 stato un grande onore ed ugual privilegio in virtu dell'importanza della nostra associazione.

Seguire le orme del dinamico Davide Barro che mi aveva preceduto alla presidenza, non 6 stata impresa facile.

Un'occhiata retrospettiva ai quattro anni della mia presidenza mi conferma che sono stato particolarmente fortunato, per 15mcredibile sostegno elargitomi da amici e collaboratori e per la misura di incremento ottenuto in molte sfere ed aspetti, come 6 attestato nei vari rapporti annuali di quel tempo.

La lista di tutti coloro che mi hanno pazientemente e validamente assistito sarebbe troppo lunga.

Mi sia permesso di ringraziare particolarmente mia moglie Emma per La pazienza

esercitata durante la mia assenza da casa, a volte eccessiva, a causa del tempo da me dedicato al Club.

Quale "chairman" del comitato per le costruzioni, carica che ho ricoperto dal lontano giorno dell'inizio dei lavori per allestire la sede, sono stato testimone dell'immenso contributo dato al nostro sodalizio a partire dall'architetto Erminio Smrekar fino al phi umile dei manovali.

E' stata un'esperienza piu unica che rara e ad ognuno di questi preziosi amid e collaboratori, grazie di tutto cuore.

Non mi resta che augurare al nostro amato Club un avvenire prospero, con grande incremento sia nel campo sociale che in quello sportivo.

Dopo aver occupato la posizione di tesoriere per undici anni, e per un anno quella di consigliere nel comitato, nel giugno del 1979 l'incoraggiamento del membri mi ha spinto a presentare la candidatura alla prestigiosa posizione di presidente del Veneto Social Club.

Ho avuto l'onore di essere eletto e di servire it Club in tale posizione per due anni.

Per me e stata una nuova esperienza dalla quale ho goduto molte soddisfazioni, sia per la collaborazione del soci e di tutti coloro che formavano la parte operativa del Club, che per l'opportunita che ho avuto di conoscere e socializzare con autorita e personality varie.

Oggi provo un grande orgoglio per avere occupato tale posiiione e nel riconosce-

re che, con la collaborazione del membri del miei comitati, abbiamo mantenuto in pratica gli ideali del fondatori del Veneto Social Club. Cioe la creazione di un'organizzazione e di un ambiente dove potevano essere realizzate le tradizioni e soddisfatte le esigenze sociali, sportive e culturali degli emigrati veneti e delle loro famiglie.

Tali ideali sono stati tenuti alti dal miei predecessori e spero che anche i miei successors continuino a difenderli e a farli fruttare sempre meglio per it bene del nostri soci e delle generazioni che seguiranno.

Gilberto Martini Presidente dal giugno 1981 al giugno 1983 Gia da tre anni facevo parte del comitato direttivo con il delicato incarico di promuovere e coordinare le attivita culturali del. Club. Alle elezioni del giugno 1981 i soci mi elessero Questo nuovo impegno alla presidenza. di alta responsabilita in un Club come it nostro che si erige a "leader" della comunita italiana nel campo delle associazioni similari, lo accoglievo con tutto l'entusiasmo del momento, ma anche con una chiara visione delle delicate responsabilita che comportava. Il compito che mi si assegnava non era facile, ma la fiducia che mi fu accordata dai soci mi spron6 a dare tutto it meglio di me stesso anche, a volte, con sacrifici personali.

Si vedeva a quel tempo, come ancora oggi si vede, i.l nostro Club come una associazione che rispecchia i valori culturali di una nazionalita che si e venuta ad integrare nella vita australiana.

Tutta la comunita ci guardava con orgoglio e si aspettava che not fossimo l'esempio di quei valori d'identita italiana che abbiamo trapiantato qui in Australia.

Sotto questi punti di vista la mia attivita si e prodigata nel rivalutare nome della nostra associazione nell'ambito della comunita che rappresentiamo.

Ho cercato di allargare tutte le relazioni sociali sia verso le altre associazioni italiane che verso l.a comunita australiana.

Nei due anni della mia presidenza Club pu6 vantarsi di aver rivalutato l'operato dei vari sottocomitati i quali hanno potuto sviluppare le l.oro particolari attivita, sia sportive che sociali, ad un livello di apprezzamento nazionale.

Varie personality italiane del mondo dello spettacolo si sono esibite nella

nostra sede dimostrando un'immagine del1"Italia moderna che in questa terra non e ancora troppo conosciuta. Personalita politiche si sono avvantaggiate del nostro Club come sede di incontro della comunita italiana con quella australiana.

Pur allargando le relazioni sociali nell'ambito della societa in cui viviamo, non ho mancato di dare it mio contributo allo svlluppo di quelle attivita culturali di cui tutti i soci oggi ne vanno orgogliosi.

Ancora oggi pubblichiamo l.a nostra rivista "L'Eco del. Veneto" la quale, se pur gia esisteva prima che me ne fosse stata affidata la direzione, essa e diventata una pubblicazione di tutto rispetto.

La sua veste editoriale migliorata ed adeguata alle funzioni a cui e destinata, non e it solo miglioramento che it mio apporto le ha dato. La nostra rivista oggi e un'espressione viva della nostra cultura ed e riconosciuta ed apprezzata sia dalla maggioranza dei soci che da gran parte della comunita italiana.

Anche it "Coro Veneto", parte integrante delle nostre attivita culturali, e sempre stato da me considerato nella massima importanza quale espressione viva del nostro folclore.

La compagnia teatrale "La Gondola" che si era composta con tutta la nostra approvazione, anche se per motivi da me incontrollabili non ha potuto avere un seguito secondo le mie speranze, doveva essere un esempio delle nostre capacity in quell.'arte in cui i veneti primeggiano nella storia mondiale.

Non minore importanza si deve dare all'istituzione dei corsi di lingua italiana che hanno trovato sede e patrocinio presso it nostro Club. Questi corsi erano un servizi.o ai nostri soci per

un consolidamento ed un divulgamento della nostra cultura. mio patrocinio, nella carica di presidente del Club, era anche rivolto alle varie attivita sportive con particolare riguardo a quelle che maggiormente si distinguevano nel contesto della comunita italiana ed australiana. Lo sport accomuna i popoli e soprattutto le giovani generazioni. Ho sempre creduto che it nostro Club dovesse essere un trampolino di lancio del nostri giovani verso la vita di questo paese. Essi dovevano trovare nel. Club la paternita delle loro origini e trasportarle nel futuro con orgoglio e dignita. Quanto mi. 6 stato possibile ho sempre fatto nell'affiancare e sostenere tutti quegli sports che ci hanno portato un prestigio.

Ad esempio voglio citare la "Coppa Italia" di calcio, glocata per la prima volta durante la mia presidenza, nella sede del nostro Club. Inoltre i campionati nazionali di bocce ed i vari tornei di tennis che hanno sempre trovato mio appoggio nel rendere la nostra sede quale centro di sviluppo Belle relazioni.

Col pensiero rivolto ad una politica di espansione e progresso del Club prolettata nel futuro, prospettai la mia idea di doverci adeguare, sia costituzionalmente che moralmente, ai nuovi sviiuppi dei tempi moderni. Noi siamo ormai una comunita che sta inesorabilmente invecchiando e se vogliamo che la nostra opera e i nostri sacrifici non vadano dispersi, dobbiamo preparare fin d'ora it terreno per i nostri figli che sono gli unici eredi legittimi del nostro operato.

Questa mia visione futuristica non 6 stata ancora capita, ma sara i.l tema che a mio avviso dovra essere dibattuto in un futuro molto prossimo.

Durante it periodo della mia carica di presidente alcuni problemi di scadenze gia prestabilite nel curriculum amministrativo 'precedente si sono presentate per la risoluzione.

Le risoluzioni da me suggerite hanno dato per6 modo a fraintesi ed a conseguenti discussioni.

Fra le altre mie visioni di ammodernamento, che con la cessazione del mio mandato di presidente non ho piu potuto perorare, vi erano al.cune modifiche all'espletamento delle funzioni direttive.

Fra le quali, per chiarire maggiormente it mio punto di vista, vorrei ricordare la proposta di aprire le riunioni del comitato direttivo ai soci che volessero intervenire come osservatori.â&#x20AC;˘ Il suggerimento di eleggere un segretario "manager" remunerato dal Club. La successione delle medaglie alle vedove dei nostri soci rilasciandole anche it pieno diri.tto di voto. La presentazione annuale di un preventivo di spesa per tutti i sottocomitati. Inoltre l'obbligatorieta per i candidati alle elezioni del direttivo di presentare la loro candidatura almeno due settimane prima delle elezioni corredandola di un commento circa le loro idee, le loro qualifiche ed anche della loro fotografia. Ci6 per dare modo ai soci di poter scegliere con cognizione di causa le persone che dovranno rappresentarli e che dovranno amministrare it loro Club.

Con ci6 credo di aver reso chiara la visione del mio comportamento di presidente durante i due anni del mio mandato e pertanto auguro a tutti i soci un avvenire sicuro e prospero nell'interesse comune.

Presidente dal giugno 1983 a oggi Mentre ci accingiamo a festeggiare il. decimo anniversario della costruzione della nostra sede, frutto di tanti sacrifici di tutti noi e premlo della nostra costanza e perseveranza, io ml trovo a rivestire la carica di presidente del nostro sodalizio. Ritengo questo un onore che voi soci mi avete voluto conferire, e di ci6 ne sono orgoglioso.

Ma questo mio orgoglio lo intendo condividere con tutti voi per tutte le soddisfazioni e i meriti che insieme, fin dai primi pionieri di questa grande iniziativa, abbiamo ottenuto e ci siano guadagnati.

La presti.giosa posizione che oggi ii Club ha raggiunto e merit° di ciascuno di noi, ed ognuno ne deve godere giustamente la sua legittima parte.

Sono solo pochi mesi che rappresento it sodalizio nella veste di presidente ma, come vi e noto, sono ormai oltre cinque anni che nel comitato direttivo ho svolto varie mansioni.

Comunque questa mia ultlma esperienza nella massima carica in seno al direttivo del Club mi ha portato conoscenze per me senza precedenti e spero che nel futuro possa usufruirne.per it bene comune.

I festeggiamenti che stiamo organizzando per i'anniversario spero che saranno degni delle nostre capacity e mi auguro che tutto fi.nisca con un grande successo.

Dai giorni dell'inaugurazione, nell'ormai lontano 1973, it Club ha continuato ad ingrandirsi e svllupparsi in tutte le sue attivita.

Come voi tutti sapete, io sono sempre stato uno sportivo e pertanto ho sempre seguito da vicino tutte le vicende nel campo delle diverse discipline in cui it Club si e fatto onore.

Le attrezzature che oggi abbiamo sono gia di un livello rispettabile ma ci6 non significa che debbano rimanere tali per it futuro.

Come fino ad oggi it progresso e lo sviluppo del nostro Club non si sono mai arrestati, anche il. futuro, ne sono certo, vedra una progressiva crescita che sopperira a tutte le ambizioni dei nostri soci, sia anziani che giovani.

Ora sono in progetto due nuovi campi da tennis, ed io, non solo mi auguro che questi siano presto una realty, ma far6 quanto mi possibile per appoggiare la realizzazione di tale progetto.

Nel campo bocciofilo vantiamo la supremazia dei giocatori i quali proprio recentemente sono ritornati dall'Europa dove si sono guadagnati una posizione di tutto rispetto nei campionati mondiali. Se it prossimo torneo dei campionati mondiali di bocce a coppie verra giocato nel 1985 a Melbourne come si dice, sarei lieto se it nostro Club potesse ospitare ancora una volta, come nel 1979, le rappresentanze mondiali per tali prestigiose gare.

Anche nel calcio le nostre squadre cominciano ad affermarsi degnamente.

Quest'anno giocheremo nella lega Metropolitana e ci6 significa per i soci del Veneto Social Club poter assistere a bellissime partite nel conforto della 37

propria sede.

Cosi come lo scorso anno abbiamo ospitato la ormai classica "Coppa Italia" di calcio, sarebbe mio desiderio che anche not potessimo organizzare un simile torneo che si potrebbe chiamare "Veneto Cup".

Non solo come uomo amante dello sport ma anche, e soprattutto, come socio e presidente di questo nostro sodalizio

faro quanto mi e possibile per appoggiare e sviluppare tutte le attivita sporLo sport e dei giovani e questi tive. saranno domani gli amministratori di questo bene che not lasceremo loro.

DUE AVVENIMENTI DA RICORDARE

Dopo una partita di bocce, prima ancora che la sede fosse costruita, i soci presentano i trofei vinti all'aperto, vicino alla baracca che fungeva da bar e chiamata "Grotta Alpina".

E'il 20 maggio 1974 e l'acqua alta rovesciata dal vicino fiume Yarra in seguito ad una alluvione crea una Laguna intorno alla Sede del Club.

Dirigenti e Soci si servono di canotti di gomma tra l'ingresso del Club e la piu vicina strada praticabile.

LADIES AUXILIARY

IL PRIMO COMITATO FEMMINILE "LADIES AUXILIARY" 1967 - 1969.

Il comitato ausiliario femminile fu fondato da un gruppo di signore volontarie guidato dalla prima presidentessa Sig.ra Mary Barro nel lontano 1967.

Sin da ailora e negli anni che seguirono nostro lavoro fu dedicato sempre a vantaggio del nostro Club.

In questi anni it nome del Club Veneto apparso molte volte in caratteri grandi su tutti i giornali. Questo si deve in gran parte anche al concorso di Miss Veneto: un grande avvenimento questo che ci ha portato diverse volte ai primi posti del concorso "Miss Italian Community".

Fin dagli inizi della nostra associazione abbiamo visto i primi successi.

Nel 1968, 1969 e 1970 le nostre concorrenti vinsero it titolo di Miss Charity Queen nel contesto della comunita italiana. Successivamente, nel 1972, abbiamo avuto l'onore di vincere entrambi i titoli di Miss Italian Community e Charity Queen.

Fino ad oggi le affermazioni in questo concorso di beneficienza si sono susseguite senza interruzione.

In totale possiamo vantare due Miss Italian Community, sette Miss Charity Queen e sette Princess Charity Queen.

Con l'opera svolta in questo concorso dal comitato femminile del Veneto Social Club sono stati raccolte ingenti somme di denaro che sono state devolute a opere di beneficienza con particolare

rilievo verso i bambini spastici del Victoria e verso il Villaggio per anziani "Gualtiero Vaccari". nostro lavoro non si limita solo a questo, ma si organizzano cene, sfilate di moda e varie manifestazioni. Tutto per raccogliere qualche soldo al fine di comperare qualche cosa che fa bisogno alla sede del nostro Club, oppure per donare qualche assegno al Club in occasione della serata "President Night" e all'Anniversario.

Il nostro lavoro 6 tutto gratuito come quello di tanti volontari che lavorano nella Sala San Marco, ed 6 rivolto ad

aiutare it nostro Club nel solo interesse di tutti i soci.

Come ora, anche negli anni trascorsi it Comitato Ausiliario Femminile 6 sempre stato munito di tanta buona volonta e niente ha mai chiesto se non un po' di riconoscimento e apprezzamento da parte di tutti i membri e di tutti coloro che frequentano la nostra sede.

BOCCE Sono passati dieci anni da quella memorabile giornata. Dieci anni vissuti con un ritmo travolgente, avvinti da un susseguirsi di avvenimenti da non lasciarci neppure it tempo di pensare.

Ma andiamo un po' indietro nel tempo.

Era it 1970. Tutti si fremeva per dare inizio ad una attivita che appagasse la nostra passione bocciofila. Si sapeva fin d'allora che in fatto di bocce si era forti. Ma come si poteva dimostrarlo se non si aveva un posto ove allenarsi ed organizzare le gare?

La risposta a questo interrogativo non si e fatta attendere a lungo.

Proprio in quei giorni i dirigenti del Club stavano portando a termine le trattative per l'acquisto del terreno, affare a quel tempo molto criticato, che ora per6 ospita la nostra sede.

Portato a termine l'affare, nessuno ci ha pill trattenuti. Pioggia, fango o sole cocente, non ci hanno fermati. In un batter d'occhio sono nati quattro campi e una baracca. Quella che ancora esiste in fondo alla proprieta, ed e li in quella baracca e su quei campi che sono stati raccolti i primi soldi (migliaia di dollari) che poi assieme alle sottoscrizioni fatte maggiormente dai bocciofili e dai Toro amici, sono stati adoperati per dare inizio ai lavori della mastodontica Sede che troneggia in mezzo alla nostra proprieta.

Chi non ricorda tutto quello che abbiamo fatto in quel memorabile anno del 1973 ? e particolarmente nei mesi di novembre e dicembre ?

Per portare a termine la costruzione in tempo per l'inaugurazione, dopo una dura giornata di lavoro, si ricominciava al Club, ed a volte arrivava la mezzanotte che si era ancora li a lavorare.

Ed i week-end dove si passavano? Ancora li a lavorare. E quale era la ricompensa? Un semplice B.B.Q. ed una bicchierata che ci facevano contentissimi.

Ma alla fine i risultati sono arrivati.

Le nostre fatiche non sono state vane.

Perche dopo essere stati magnifici lavoratori, siamo stati anche i migliori organizzatori. Sui nostri campi infatti si sono svolti i pi.0 importanti tornei statali ed interstatali e la nostra sede, per la sua efficienza, e stata scelta per disputare i campionati Mondiali svoltisi nel 1979. Una manifestazione che ha sbalordito mezzo mondo e dato un prestigio che nessun altro Club d'Australia pu6 vantare.

Ed ancora ora come per it passato, la nostra supremazia continua. I nostri giocatori sono ancora i pi6 bravi d'Australia. Prova ne e che anche quest'anno dei tre giocatori che hanno formato la rappresentativa Australiana ai campionati mondiali di Ginevra, ben due erano dei nostri.

Ed hanno fatto una figurona!

BASKETBALL At the beginning, we all basically started as members of the Veneto Youth Club, as a result of our parent's involvement with the club.

Our first competition in representing the Club, began at Albert Park in "D" Grade back in 1973. The original team members at that time were Eddy Bettiol, Dino Bettiol, Renato Celotto, Gabriel Celotto, Fred Barro, Adrian Barro, John Krober and John Amadio. At this stage the team was coached by Jim Stevens.

After ten years four of the original eight players are still playing, these being Renato Celotto, John Krober, John Amadio and Adrian Barro.

The Basketball team was the first youth sports team at the Veneto Club. Many of its members helped establish other sports such as soccer and table tennis.

Generally, in the early years of the Spring Carnival, the Basketball team played a very active role in sports as follows: soccer, table tennis, volleyball, grease pole and tug of war.

In other words we were the main stay of the Club involvement. In the following years these activities were taken over the other sporting bodies and Youth Members now established at the Veneto Social Club.

After several seasons of playing competitive basketball without a coach (Jim Stevens left the Veneto Social Club after 2 or 3 seasons), Terry Wallace was appointed to take up the role. Terry coached us from 1976 to 1980, it was during this period that basketball reached the peak of its involvement. Following Terry's appointment we were upgraded to "C" Grade at Albert Park, and then we changed venues and went to play in the Sunday competition at Bulleen.

In our first year with Terry we were runners up in "C" Grade at Bulleen and Premiers in the following year in 1977.

It was also during 1977 that Terry start -ed the first girls teams.

Two teams were started, playing "D" Grade Sunday at Bulleen and "D" Grade Tuesday at Jordanville.

The original girl members of these teams were Anna Bonis, Edda Bonis, Barbara Gaston, Maria Bonato, Eda Vella, Iva Giacomin, Yvonne Bertazzon, Jenny Delaa Chiesa, Gina Barro, Adriana Rigoni, Betty Bolletta, Jackie Craig and Anna Pozzobon.

The Sunday girls team won a premiership during their second season, quite an achievement considering most of the girls never played basketball before.

At one stage the Veneto Social Club had seven teams playing in different competitions, ranging from "D" grade to "A" Grade, and in one particular season every team reached the finals in their respective grades.

Under Terry's coaching six of the seven teams had at least won one premiership at their respective competition.

Throughout the history of Basketball at the Veneto Social Club we have had many social occasions such as picnics, car rallies, beach parties, bar-be-ques, and tournaments to country areas, and countless impromtu celebrations at the Veneto Social Club following successful premiership games.

Due to Terry's other commitments, coaching and management of the individual teams was undertaken by the players them -selves.

Because of the enormity of managing such a large number of teams and the lack of facilities, many of the teams dispersed and players condensed into three teams, consisting of two Mens

and one Womens Teams, comprising mainly of the original members and players who have been associated with the Club for many years, such as Frank Maiorino, Alex Grigoruk, Robert Di lamo, Lance Wallace, Mark Flack, Danny Torchetto and Sue Duckmanton.

The Veneto Social Club has supported the Basketball in all of its endeavours however, the future for Basketball in 1984 now looks grim with only one mens and womens team competing. If Basketball is to regain its status, Juniors and parents from the Club must be involved and adequate facilities for training It would be a shame to be provided. if Basketball at the Club was allowed to come to an end, after being the first competitive sport to represent the Veneto Social Club in the general. community.

CIRCOLO ITALIANO ANZIANI di Bulleen e Dintorni Il gruppo anziani, it quale si riunisce ogni giovedi nei locali del Veneto Social Club, e stato organizzato dal Parroco della Chiesa di San Clements Fr. Egan nel 1977.

Egli come parroco ha visto la necessity di unire tutti gli anziani the erano isolati nelle loro case.

Poiche questo parroco non parlava la lingua italiana, ha incaricato il Sig. Pullia, allora presidente della Federazione Cattolica, di dargli una mano per formare un comitato.

Verso la fine del 1977 il Sig.Pullia si e messo in contatto con il. Sig. Agnoletti, allora presidente del Veneto Social Club, e cosi, con il consenso di tutto it comitato, siamo entrati a far parte della grande famiglia.

Il nostro circolo viene chiamato: "Circolo Italiano Anziani di Bulleen e Din-

terni". Al momento conta 140 iscritti.

Le nostre attivita sono a scopo ricreativo. tin pranzo ogni primo giovedi del mese, e negli altri giovedi gli uomini si divertono nel gioco delle carte e delle bocce, mentre le donne rivivono i. loro anni giovanili con il gioco della tombola.

Tante buone amicizie si sono formate e grazie all'ospitalita del Veneto Social Club la nostra anzianita viene vissuta in buona compagnia e serenity.

Molti dei nostri anziani contano i giorni per ritrovarsi di nuovo uniti tutti assieme.

IL CORO VENETO

Il Coro del Veneto Social Club e stato formato nel luglio del1975.

Le finalita erano quelle di diffondere la musica e la cultura veneta. Fin dalla fondazione it maestro del coro e sempre stato Nino Morandin.

I concerti annuali che not del coro ormai facciamo di consuetudine sono: in sede al Veneto Social Club per la festa del Presidente, per la celebrazione di anniversari, per la Miss Veneto, per i Trevisani nel Mondo, per i Bassanesi e per molte altre manifestazioni.

Cantiamo pure la Santa Messa per altre comunita etniche ed in particol.are per la comunita maltese e per molte celebrazioni italiane.

Partecipiamo ogni anno alla festa italiana di Lygon Street, al Villaggio Vaccari ed al picnic annuale del Veneto Social Club.

Da cinque anni e stata formata la "Corale Tre Venezie" con i cori "Adriatico", "Furlan" e "Veneto", che ha avuto un grande successo.

Abbiamo partecipato ad una edizione del Festival della Canzone Italiana organizzata dal. Cay. Di Bari.

Abbiamo pure partecipato a quattro edizi.oni di "Arcobaleno" alla Dallas Brooks Hall.

Siamo sempre stati presenti a tutte le manifestazioni internazionali. Ogni qual volta il "Festival of All Nations" ha organizzato delle rappresentazioni ii nostro coro ha sempre dato la sua adesione. Siamo stati a rappresentare it folclore italiano al Mayer Music Bowl, ai Fitzroy Gardens, a Bright, a Moe e a Myrtleford.

Molti sono stati anche i concerti di beneficienza. I piu importanti sono stati quelli per la Croce Rossa,per l'Istituto dei bambini sordi, per lAssociazione Cattolica Italiana e per la "Home for the Aged".

In collaborazione con la "Lyric Opera Society" abbiamo dato pure tre concerti operistici al teatro A.M.P. in citta.

Per diversi anni abbiamo cantato la Santa Messa alla Cattedrale in occasione dell'anniversario della Repubblica Italiana.

Abbiamo dato un concerto ed abbiamo pure provveduto all'organizzazione, con la partecipazione di altri cori e della Banda Bellini, in occasione della chiusura dell'appello pro-terremotati del meridione d'Italia con la presenza del Primo Ministro Fraser.

Siamo stati invitati a Griffiths per la prima riunione nazionale dei Trevisa-

ni nel Mondo per tre giorni.

Abbiamo partecipato ad un pellegrinaggio a Murchinson per cantare la Santa Messa e successivamente per dare un concerto alla vineria alla presenza di circa seimila persone.

Abbiamo dato un concerto per la presentazione della gondola regalata dalla citta di Venezia al nostro Club. Nell'occasione, il. nostro corista Reffo ha vogato con la stessa nel fiume Yarra con a bordo personality politiche australiane e italiane.

Uno dei concerti pill importanti, in rappresentanza del Veneto Social Club, e stato quello in occasione dell'apertura della mostra "Pompei '79" alla National Gallery, che e stato uno dei maggiori eventi culturali italiani in Australia.

Un altro concerto importante e stato quello dato alla "Camberwell Civic Centre" assieme al coro germanico "Liedertafel Arion", alla "R.A.A.F. Band" e all'Australian Children Choir, che ha proiettato it nostro coro nel grande giro dei concerti multiculturali.

Per due anni consecutivi it nostro coro ha organizzato ed allestito un presepio vivente al Veneto Social Club dove ha cantato gli inni natalizi al lume di candela. Questa manifestazione e stata

VENETO YOUTH When first approached to write this article, I thought to myself, "what on earth am I going to write?".

I decided to peruse through the past Veneto Social Club Annual. Year Books, and read the reports of all the past presidents of the Veneto Youth Sub-Committee just to get a few ideas.

Those year books, the photos, what memories they brought back to me. It was then that i realised that I have seen and grown with the Veneto Youth Club, throughout the years both as a member and now as President.

I remember saying to my friends, when I was bearly a teenager, "one day I'll be the President of the Veneto Youth Club", and now, some seven years later I am.

I am honoured to have my name beside past presidents such as Luciano Crema, Denis Basile, Dalilla Saretta, Carlo Graser, Romeo Crema and Lou Crema.

The Veneto Youth Club has grown emensily since the days of "the old tin shed".

The youth club functions were few and far inbetween.

The local hang-out was around the billiard table. You could almost fit all the youth around that one billiard table. Those were the days when the Venetq Youth Club was a small insignificant group, not even a real established sub-committee.

In 1973-74 came the settling in period, when the Veneto Social. Club Building as it now stands, was finally finished.

It was, at about this time that the Veneto Youth Club began to flourish.

And grow it did. 'till today, one decade later it has established itself as the most prominent and beneficial subcommittee of the Veneto Social Club.

The major factor behind this outstanding success has been the remarkable popularity of the Saturday Night Discos for the 15 and over age group.

I can vividly remember the first Rock Night that I attended In those early years bands were the main attraction, and on this Saturday night the band was "Select".

There were 100, maybe even 200 people present, that was classified as a successful night in those days.

With the change in trend and tastes, the then popular Rock Nights were given a facelift to the Disco Night, and now our average crowd is 800 people.

Sadly enough, the same success has not followed with the 18 and over Thursday Night Discos. They got off to a fabulous start, however, with heavy competition from the outside public discos around Melbourne, the Veneto Youth Sub-Committee found it hard to compete with them.

Various Committees, during the last few years have tried new ideas and concepts to draw back the people. Such things as bringing back the bands, and having only a few week-night discos on special occassions such as Show Day and Cup-Eve. Due to very poor attendances at these over 18 discos they have been temporarily abandoned.

It seems that once the young ones reach 18 they spread their wings and fly the coop, so to speak.

Despite this, there is one annual event which brings many old faces back year after year -- the SNOW PICNIC! Every year, in late August the Veneto Youth Committee organises a trip to Mt.Buller and without fail every year more and more pople participate. For some it is a time to get together with a few old friends, and go the the snow again, for others it is a chance to see real snow for the first time. I know that that's what it was for me and many of my friends. My first snow picnic with the Veneto Youth Club had about 3-4 busToday this has doubled, at the ses.

Other outside activities organised by the Veneto Youth Sub-Committee such as the Beach picnic, Film Nights, and Car rally which in the early years had good attendances have in the last couple of years to date dwindled into oblivion.

The annual Chicken and Champagne Breakfast has this year had a facelift to the "Pancake & Champagne Breakfast", hopefully this change will rekindle some interest in outdoor functions organised by the Veneto Youth Committee.

It is still evident that maximum support and encouragement has not, in the past, and still is not, being given to the Veneto Youth Committee by the sons and daughters of Senior members of the Veneto Social Club, and the senior members themselves.

This at times, has been very disheartening for the committee members, who give up a lot of their time in organising and running the discos and other functions.

I think that maybe the Veneto Social Club and the Veneto Youth Organisation is taken for granted by many of its patrons. They would probably only realise this if the Veneto Social Club and/or the Veneto Youth Club was to no longer exist. Like the old saying goes..."You don't know what you've got 'till its' gone..." it is those who have visited the Veneto Social Club on a one and only occasion that marvel and praise its existence.

Mondo Rock & The Youth Committee After the Show !

CALCIO VENETO One of the greatest achievements and attractions at the Veneto Club is its sport and one of its many is soccer.

The very first recruiting campaigns was waged in early 1974 with notices displayed throughout the club calling for players to form the first soccer team.

With the grand opening of the club still ringing in everybodies ears, there were many enthusiasts willing to help. Paul Ferrari snr. was sports manager at that time and Jim Stevens was sports co-ordinator, also the late Abele Pillon, Piero Simeoni and many who were to become the regulars of the Rialto Bar in those early days. As the pitch had not been developed for playing the very first game was played at Marcelling College, Bulleen, playing Galveston and winning 5-1. The club started the year with 3 teams - firsts, seconds and Under 16's. The senior team in its first year, also made the semi-finals of the District League Cup - losing 10 to the eventual cup winners, Mitcham.

The team finished 4th. in the North Division League.

A brilliant start for a new soccer club. Some of the players included in that very first team were - Carlo Graser, Adrian Spadaro, R. Hero, J. Menegazzo, D. Dal Ben, Dr. Di. Clario, T. Di Piero, L. Osellame. G. Guglielmi, Benny Dal Ben winner of the very first Best and Fairest, R. Boscato, V. Frizzini, J. Rossetto who was captain and coach. The players themselves, in 1975 formed a committee to raise money for soccer, as finances were rather limited and moral support was also scarce. Donations for raffling were made by De Bortoli Wines, Bisetto Cakes, and Mario Gobbo. 1976 was to prove a better year for the players as more people started to go to the games.

This interest was headed by Abele Pillon Peter D'Adam, Piero Simeoni, Angelo Bettiol, and Orfeo Di Marzio started to organize a committee, as we know it today.

This was not only for the seniors but also for the interest of starting a junior section at the Veneto Club. Peter D'Adam was given the task to liase with the Victorian Soccer Federation in organizing the teams for the 1977 season.

The first official soccer sub-committee

meeting was not to take place until July 1977. The first chairman of soccer was Peter D'Adam, Tony Pegoraro Sportsmanager, Adrian Spadaro secretary and treasuerer and included in that first committee were Abele Pillon, Mr. Mason, Mr. Agnoletto, Mr. Boarotto, Mr. Bettiol, Mr. Conte, Mr. Di Marzio and mr. Storcato, and Mr.Dell'Aquila.

It was also the year that the seniors were promoted to the 3rd Division of the Provisional League and because the newly formed committee was not anxious to accept promotion, the players resorted to taking up a petition in support of their ambition to be upgraded. The decision was made to accept the Federations placing and on looking back it was the start of better times for soccer at the club.

It was not until 1978 that the juniors were to be ready for registration and the teams comprised of Under 15, Under 12 and under 11.

These first junior teams have provided us with many exciting senior players, but one in particular was to prove very skillful to watch and that was lawrence Boarotto. Because of the workload of the secretary, it was decided that the juniors and seniors should have their own secretaries and it was also apparent that they were in need of a treasurer and this responsability was given to Angelo Bettiol, who has continued with this task most admirably.

A newsletter was written each week during the seasons of 1978 and 1979 by Peter D'Adam, but which was not carried on after that. 1979 saw only one secretary for both sections again and during the year these responsibilities were taken over by Greg Pansino and all teams did very well. In 1980,5 junior teams, along with the seniors were registered for play under the Veneto colours.Chairman for 1980 was Bep Boarotto and he was to continue in this position for about 31 years.

Giuseppe Barbieri was appointed secretary of the juniors and John Dell'Aquila senior secretary.

This was the year that we saw Lawrence Boarotto set a trend of winning Best and Fairest Awards.

All teams once again performed well in their respective leagues.

The 1981 season saw a dual coaching arrangement for the seniors, Marcello D'Amico and Carlo Graser.

It was the year that the seniors finished 5th.

The juniors were growing in numbers and we fielded Under 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 ,16 teams.

In May, 1981, after many years of talk, our present tuckshop was opened As there was no ladies soccer sub-committee, the tuckshop was worked by the wives of team managers and committee.

Inspired by the success of the tuckshop, the ladies decided to organize themselves into the committee that they are now.

1982 would prove to be the most successful year to date for soccer at the Veneto Club.

The seniors would finish 2nd. in the 3rd. Division of the Provisional League, which gave us automatic upgrading and we were to be promoted to the 1st. division of the Provisional League in 1983.

We were also successful in our application to hold the Coppa Italia at the Veneto Club and it was to prove to be the most successful Coppa ever staged.

According to the figures of the Executive of the Coppa, the numbers of spectators had grown quite substantially - beyond anybodies expectations.

It was also a great success for the club, as soccer gave them a turnover of $37,000.00. The work involved was tremendous but it was very satisfying to see the soccer committees' and many other people of the club helping us to make the club a very inviting place to be at. We were able to give all spectators and players a well organized and friend-

ly atmosphere in which to be involved in.

Rino Tessarotto as sportsmanger, was the central force of the task that we took on. 1982 also saw the juniors perform very well and their new secretary was to be Mrs. Maria Bianco, who has remained with us since. This year was not the most successful year but, we are sure that we will be promoted to the Metropolitan League. With this in mind, we will be looking for all members of the club to support us both morally and of course financially. That is through advertising, donations and by becoming financial supports of the soccer. Without your past help and support the Veneto colours would not be where they are today, nor would they be held in the esteem that they are by other clubs.

Soccer from its very humble beginningsthe first year playing at Marcelling, has progressed a long way and we are absolutely sure that it will always be an important part of the Veneto Club.

We would like to congratulate the members of the Veneto on achieving 10 years and look forward to the next decade.

V.S.C. SHOOTERS GROUP Uno dei tanti gruppi sportivi operanti in seno al Veneto Club e quello dei cacciatori e tiratori al piattello.

Questo gruppo di appassionati competitori di tiro e di attivita venatorie e ormai in esistenza da circa dieci anni.

Data la loro natura e, per ragioni ovvie, questi sport vengono esercitati al di fuori dell'ambito del Veneto Social Club, ma nonostante ci6, tutte le funzioni ricreative, meeting e contatti con altri gruppi vengono tenuti al Club stesso.

Per mezzo del nostro "Liason Officer", che attualmente e it Cay. Tommaso Agnoletti, tutto it nostro operato si svolge sotto l'osservanza e la guida del Comitato Direttivo. Questa, a mio parere, e un'ottima struttura, poiche in una famiglia, ed io considero it Club "una famiglia", se non ci fosse un capo a cui riferirsi non ci potrebbe essere mai unione.

Lo scopo unico del Club e di mantenere ottime relazioni con tutti, creare amicizie nuove e rendere la vita pill facile e piu piacevole!

Definizioni migliori di queste non ce ne possono essere e queste riflettono la capacita e l'esperienza di un uomo che ha dedicato tante ore a questa attivita sociale-ricreativa. Mi sono fermato un pochino su questo punto perche pu6 essere d'insegnamento. anche a me, che lo metto per iscritto.

Passando ora ai successi ottenuti dal V.S.C. Shooters in campo d'azione, voglio menzionare che uno dei nostri membri, Benny Scotta, e riuscito a conquistare la coppa di campione d'Australia del. Tiro al Piattello a punti realizzando un risultato di 177 punti su 177.

La pi6 cospicua vincita mai ottenuta in precedenza da questo Club.

Due anni fa it V.S.C. Shooters si classificato primo nel "South Eastern Zone Shooting Tournament" al quale hanno partecipato dieci altri Club.

Solo un anno addietro ci siamo incontrati col Marconi Gun Club in un'occasione in cui erano nostri ospiti,.ed abbiamo riportato una vittoria su di loro per la quale ci siamo impossessati di una magnifica coppa che andra in palio ogni dodici mesi.

Tornando alcuni anni addietro ricordo che uno dei nostri giovani Shooters, Joe Scarpa, riport6 un grande successo agli incontri nazionali, aggiudicandosi primo posto per it "Double Barrel Championship" "B" grade.

Quattro anni fa il sottoscritto fu membro delle squadre rappresentanti l'Australia e partecip6 ai campionati di tiro del South East Asia.

L'Australia vinse le individuali con Reg Boyce e si aggiudic6 it primo posto nei campionati a squadre.

E'evidente che gli italiani sono molto appassionati di questo sport ed io potrei menzionare fra loro tanti nomi di ottimi tiratori che avrebbero grandi prospettive per it futuro. Ma essi si accontentano di trattare it tutto come un "hobby and relaxation" e si trattengono pertanto dal diventare dei veri competitori.

NETBALL

Netball has been played since the Veneto Club was commenced.

There have been many representatives since then and has continued.

There have been up to six teams playing at one time. We have had premierships and runnersup positions.

This year, 1983, we have three senior teams all of which are putting in a great effort. Veneto 1 has been playing Saturday afternoon and Wednesday nights and in both competitions have reached the grand final which will be played in three weeks.

Veneto 2 has fought quite hard throughout the Saturday competition. However, unfortunately finals were not reached.

Veneto 3 has been playing for one season.

This team consists of girls who had played for the Veneto Social Club many years ago and have decided to get together and see if they had not lost their old Netball touch. Their touch has not been lost as they have already won the preliminary final and are hoping to be successfullTin the Grand Final.

Netball has been continuous for many" years and I ipe it shall continue for many years to come.

I hope that Veneto 1 and 3 succeed in the finals and come out on top.

V.S.C. SQUASH In 1974, a group of individuals, members of the Veneto Social Club, with a deep interest in squash, and a competitive spirit, decided to organize the Veneto Squash Club.

The aims of the Club were basically to: 1)Foster interest in squash amongst the V.S.C. members.

2)Raise the standards of the game by competing at all levels with other social clubs in the area.

3)By social contact, advance the standing and prestige of the Veneto Social Club in the community.

In 1975, Tony Gallichio and Elfio Stella formed the nucleus of the first subcommittee, and indeed they were the organizing force behind the first team formed to compete in the north-east section of the Squash Raquets Association.

This first team was made up of Tony Gallichio, Morrie Rech, Ernie Cester, Ron Barbano, John McArdle.

Competing in G grade, the team finished on top of the ladder and went on to win the Grand Final convincingly, winning the first squash pennant and premiership for the V.S.C. The squash team was promotoed to E grade the following season being the spring tournament of 1975, and the team comprising Ron Barbano, Tony Gallichio, E. Stella, John McArdle and Morrie Rech became convincing premiers the second season in a row.

Success at tournament level quickly fired the enthusiasm of members in the Club 1976 saw the formation of three teams and promotion to higher levels in the competition.

A formal subcommittee was formed to more efficiently' handle the expanding interest in squash. The first committee formed was made up of Tony Gallichio, Chair -man, Morrie Rech, John Dal Santo and Danny Dodorico.

Interest and enthusiasm continued to expand and more and more members joined the organized competition, until eight teams were formally registered with the Squash Raquet Association.

The standards of competition ranged from A right through to F.

From 1975 the first competing year, through to 1983, the Veneto Squash teams have rarely failed to achieve a premiership.

There has always been at least one team involved in a grand final game.

1975 to 1983 has seen the expansion of the squash club to include a maximum of eight teams with a total of 45 registered players.

In 1980, the squash committee successfully achieved the transfer of the squash club from the north-eastern section of the Association to the prestigious Club circuit.

This transfer enabled us to pit our squash skills agains the calibers of clubs like R.A.C.V., Naval and military, M.C.C., Royal South Yarra and many other private clubs.

1980 also saw the construction of the new squash courts, which are second to none in the competition circuit.

The continuing expansion of the squash club however, will obviously be limited by the number of courts that we have available.

Enthusiasm and new membership can only be stimulated by the availability of facilities.

We feel that the squash club has progressed enthusiastically and successfully over the last ten years, achieving those aims originally set for the club.

TENNIS Many stories begin with a date, and certainly '76/'77 was a year to remember.

The Veneto Social Club celebrated the "Tenth Anniversary of it's Foundation, and amongst the celebrations which come to mind at that time was also the "Birth of Tennis", and the beginning of yet another vital addition to the many sporting facilities provided by the Veneto Social Club.

The first name which comes to mind is Toni Bortoli, he was at the time a member of the main committe and the Chief Instigator of Tennis. An idea was born which became reality with the completion of 4 tennis courts in late July 1976.

In November 1976 the first Tennis SubCommittee was formed which consisted of Mario Basso (chairman) Tina Cannuli (secretary) Raffaele Launech (treasurer) Tina Mantello, Marcia Dal Santo, Robert Sartori, Romano Zuglian, Robert Saro, John Lanzon, E. Stocco and G.Beltr -min, with Toni Bortoli as the Liason Officer.

They were the driving force behind all our early achievements.

By the end of June, 1977 the Tennis section had on record 300 members, a remarkable response in only 12 months. Tennis in those days was social, with,only inter-club matches played.

The group were mainly beginners, with little knowledge or know-how of tennis, but with a steady guidance from a few active members, and coaching from our "veteren" Rino Mazzocatto Tennis began to "Boom".

By the middle of 1981 there were almost 500 members (nearly a third of Veneto Social Club. Membership).

Little did Toni, Mario, or the early pioneers of the game know of the massive enthusiasm they instigated at the time.

By this time women were active participants of the Tennis, and with the untiring efforts and guidance of Tina Mantello they too became an active social, and competitive group, and our Juniors, whom in previous years could barely hold a reacquet began making their mark, and even scaring some of our seniors.

1982-'83 was probably the most significant year for progress, our tennis members outnumbered all other sporting groups within the Club. To date we have 9 ladies teams, 4 junior teams, 4 senior mens teams, 4 mens night-comp. teams.

And thus tennis became a vital part of the Veneto Social Club, which as can be seen in the Annual Report, it was the section after the Youth Club, with the highest financial contribution to the Club.

We now have a backbone of potential in our Junior players who have made, and continue to make outstanding progress, with some having been selected to play for the "Shell Squad", which is the cream of Junior Tennis.

The Hard work which was so diligently carried out by all members of our past and present Committee has seen it's rewards.

A room was made available for our mid-week ladies to entertain visiting teams, umpire chairs, etc. etc. etc. and of course the greatest of all, our 2 new courts.

My heartfelt thanks go to all those people whom have worked so hard in the past to the present committee and all our sponsors whom have given so generously, We can now only look ahead, I wish our beautiful club whose organization is being constantly envied and praised a prosperous future, in an atmosphere of fraternity.

Ecco sul flume Yarra la gondola the Venezia, memore e fiera del suoi figli lontani, ha donato al "Veneto Social Club" di Melbourne e, tramite it nostro grands sodalizio, a tutti I veneti ed a tutti gli italiani d'Australia.

COMMENTO

I pill rilevanti documenti a corredo della storiografia sono stati raccolti in questa edizione speciale.

Tutto l'insieme dovrebbe dare una visione, seppure sommaria, della vita sociale di questa grande organizzazione.

Non e certo possibile, elencando fatti e dati, mettere in risalto come si dovrebbe la parte umanistica di questa organizzazione che ha vissuto momenti di ansia e di fraternita, forse incomprensibili se considerati dal di fuori, e che visto poi un susseguirsi di avvenimenti di un successo forse neppure sperato agli inizi.

L'onore che mi e stato riservato nel compilare e pianificare questo libro mi appaga.largamente del.le mie fatiche e mi rende orgoglioso di essere in certo qual modo parte della stessa organizzazione, non solo come socio onorario, ma soprattutto come un italiano che pub condividere i valori culturali della stessa patria che ci distingue.

Mi sarebbe piaciuto aver avuto a mia disposizione molto pill tempo per aver potuto indagare pill a fondo e scoprire cosi molti nomi di quei silenziosi lavoratori che a quest'opera hanno largamente contribuito pur rimanendo nell'incognito.

Spero che essi si renderanno conto che it loro apporto non e privo di gloria e che rimarra comunque nella storia della nostra comunita e che it merito di ci6 che hanno fatto non potra mai essergli tolto in nessun modo.

L'idea semplice di un'unione sociale col solo miraggio di rievocare tradizioni per lenire la nostalgia della Patria lontana, si e infatti sviluppata in un'opera che ha fatto onore al lavoro e all'ingegnosita di tutta la comunita italiana di cui era parte. frutto del lavoro e dell'entusiasmo di questi veneti e stato, ed e ancora oggi, l'esempio di quanto l'umanita possa ottenere con la cooperazione e con la volonta nell'unione d'intenti.

Piu volte la Sede dei Veneti e stata portata a simbolo della laboriosita del popolo italiano ed a vanto delle capacita di tutta la nostra comunita nel sapersi inserire in una civilta diversa imponendo con orgoglio le nostre nobili tradizioni.

Abbiamo ricevuto molto da questa terra che ci ha ospitato, ma ad essa abbiamo saputo contraccambiare dando quanto era in not della nostra millenaria storia.

E ci6 ci e stato riconosciuto con la simpatia e l'ammirazione che ci siamo saputi accattivare.

Di tutto questo si deve gran parte anche a quest'opera dei Veneti di Melbourne che certo non e rimasta indifferente alla popolazione locale oltre che alle autorita politiche.
