PRESIDENT'S REPORT
RELAZIONE DEL PRESIDENTE
Another year of satisfactory activities for the Veneto Social Club has gone by since my previous report. Here we are once again at the annual general meeting, in the course of which you shall obtain any desired clarification concerning the Club affairs and elect the new Committee for the coming year. This happens to be my fourth President's report and, with some sadness, I must announce that it is also going to be the last one, as far as I can see. I have already signified to the Committee my intention to relinquish the office of president. If you stop and thick that I have been continuously a Committee member, serving in a number of positions, for the past ten years, then you must honestly agree that I have contributed my fair share to the development of the Club. At the moment of stepping down from this position, which has given me a lot of hard work alongside a lot of satisfaction, I like to recall the words of my prede-

cessor, comm. Duilio Barro, In his last report as president. Having urged each and everyone to keep in mind the sacrifices endured by the pioneers of our great organization, he added: "Do not underrate the "old hands" for they have proved their worth. Do not forget that the functioning of a machine depends on the perfect functioning of each one of its components". This is the way I have always acted, and I think the ideal expressed by those words also explains the growing success of our Club, which represents the most shining example for all other sections of the Italian community having organizational needs and aspirations similar to our own. From the Treasurer's report you can see that our Club has moved another good STEP FORWARD. Dear Members, it is all your work. It is the result of your involvement and contribution, your confidence, your attendance and your constant awareness as members of the Veneto Social Club, truly our second family. I particularly commend my fellow Committeemembers for their unfailing, intelligent, unseltsh work, for having gladly sacrificed a lot of their own time, and for the skill with which they have co-ordinated the routine of the executive and administrative personnel. They have my deep gratitude. During the past year we have called two special general meetings to discuss some important projects. Results were extremely gratifying. Problems have been solved in a most straightforward and democratic manner. If we cannot as yet see those meetings and discussions produce in real terms exactly what we were aiming at, it is because some of the projects are still in the detailing stage and need further approvals. However, I do not think at this stage that the realization of those plans is very far off. As already mentioned, but without going into details which can be given by the Treasurer, I wish to draw your attention to the past year's financial performance. Despite a constantly growing bill for general expenses and running costs, profit for the past year is in line with that of previous years. Now let me briefly mention the various Subcommittees and special interest groups which are the soul and the initiators of all our social events. Simply not out of courtesy but because of my sincere appreciation for a job splendidly done, the first to come to my mind is the "Ladies' Auxiliary Committee", a closely-knit group that, year in year out, has spared no effort to achieve a double aim: — to enhance the prestige and increase the profits of the Club. There is no social event throughout the year to which the Ladies' Auxiliary does not give its voluntary contribution. Though these Ladies do not even have the right to attend our meetings and air their views, they have unselfishly given of their time to the Club, have organized a standing service group always capable and ready to assist at every function, have carried out brilliant initiatives from which the Club has greatly benefited. Their specialization in this field must be a source of pride. The "Youth Subcommittee", on the other hand, has built up a solid organization which has drawn to its activities a large number of Members' daughters and sons who have thus partaken of healthy entertainment not far from their partents' presence. All social and sporting events of the youth group have been successful. To the young I wish a future of success and satisfaction to match the past performance. I trust that their knowledge, drive and new ideas will genuinely contribute to the progress of the Club, remembering at all times that their parents' ambition in creating this organization was, and still is, to maintain our great Venetian traditions, the most valuable spiritual heritage for those who had to leave their native land. I want also to commend and thank all the sporting groups, particularly the "Bocce Subcommittee" which has distinguished itself for its pioneering role in the

development of our Club, for the specific promotion of the ''most Veneto" of all sporting codes, for the way it has taken charge of and run the "Bocce Bar", where our members are enjoying very convenient prices. The large and regular attendance of Bocce players and fans is a sign of great efficiency and interest, bearing also in mind that this group organises tournaments and liaises with various Clubs and organizations throughout Australia. I want to pay its due to the "Bachelors Subcommittee", that generous group of members in charge of activities for the building of a kindergarten at the Veneto S.C. Though the kindergarten is still to come, the initial enthusiasm of this group remains very much alive. I wish to extend my appreciation for their work to all other Subcommittees which provide the infrastructures of our Clubs:— the Subcommittees looking after the basketball, netball, soccer, tennis and squash teams, the billiard players, the shooters group, the karate classes. We are very proud and appreciative of the "Veneto Social Club Choir", whose artistic level and popularity are reflected by the numerous calls to perform in Melbourne and all over Victoria. A new initiative introduced during the past year, and one which was overdue, is that of Italian language and culture classes, now held reguarly at our Club with a considerable number of young students. Finally my thanks to all our staff, in the office, in the kitchen, in the bars, in the gardens, with particularly warm feelings for Lino Bettiol, our license nominee, always outstandingly capable and loyal in the fulfilment of his task. Your President Cay. TOM AGNOLETTI
SECRETARY'S REPORT
The 1978-79 year has drawn to a close. It has been a year of intense activity with two extraordinary Meetings, firstly to resolve the Land acquisition and sports building complex and secondly the ratification of junior members and inclusion that sons and daughters of ordinary members can become members of the club. It is very encouraging to see over the past year the number of young people that have become members for without these the future of the Club would be stagnant. The Club is always in need of new ideas to enable it to cater for the many activities that have been introduced. The number of activities that are available from the Club is wide and varied and caters for children, teenagers and adults. This makes it a truly family club. I would urge all members to support the Club not only from a financial point but in a true spirit of unity, in order for us to maintain our growth. The Club is now 12 years old and reflecting in the past what has been achieved is directly due to the spirit of togetherness. In the years ahead there is the unenviable task of the Committee to maintain and improve facilities and accommodate all the different ideas that each individual has. The Committee man has often been neglected by the member but he plays a very important role in the running of the Club. It is a position that requires intelligence, unselfish devotion, commonsense and endurance. Unfortunately over the past years there has been a decline in the number of people that have nominated themselves for the Committee and in the past occasions we have just had the exact number to make up a Committee. I firmly believe that in order for the Club to get the best committee there must be a choice of people. Also the committee people should be more approachable to the members in order to maintain a level of communication and understanding. I would like to thank the Committee, Administration personnel and the members for their support. G. Dal Sasso Secretary
RELAZIONE DEL SEGRETARIO L'anno sociale 1978-79 6 giunto a termine.
G. Dal Sasso Segretario

FROM THE SPORTS MANAGER
Many thanks to the various Sub-committees, coaches and organisers of each individual sport or competition, and special thanks to all the competitors for their effort in making it a successful year. R. Tessarotto Sports Manager
Netball teams of the Veneto Social Club
REPORT OF THE "SOCCER SUB-COMMITTEE"
Once again in the past year there has been a great Increase in the sport activities of the V.S.C. During the 1978-79 season the Soccer-Subcommittee has appointed a team manager and a coach for each team. On the Senior and Reserve teams we have coach S. Turkovic and team manager 0. Di Marzio, with liaison officer W. Agnoletti. "Under 16s": coach G. Grasier, team manager G. Boarotto. "Under 14s": coach R. Boscato, team manager B. Bastasin. "Under 12s": coach S. Tarascio, team manager T. Pegoraro. "Under 11s": coach T. Rigoni, team manager G. Barbieri. Success has been achieved by hard work of the Secretary, P. D'Adam, and of the whole Soccer SubCommittee. The Basketball team of the V.S.C., coached by T. Wallace with (liaison officer C. Grasier, has achieved premiership of a A Grade Men's Teams, and runners-up of the B Grade. The Women's team has improved a lot and hopes to win the Winter Premiership. The Netball team, guided by T. Mariorino, has improved over the past year, gaining second place in the Summer Competition. Our Squash and Tennis teams in the past year have competed in various tournaments. The Squash A Grade have won the Premiership of the Sports Spring Carnival. The "Tennis Mixed" have won the Premiership, thanks to M. Basso and all the Players.
It gives me great pleasure to report, on behalf of the Chairman of the Sub-Committee, Mr. Orfeo Di Marzio, and of the entire Sub-Committee, on the great success that we are experiencing this season with our six soccer teams. This year we have introduced two extra teams to our list — the Under 11's and Under 14's. This has come about because of the interest that has been shown in soccer at the Veneto Club and we find that we have more than one hundred young children involved in junior teams. Last year our Under 12's, coached by Sam Tarascio finished fifth and our Under 15's coached by Ricky Boscato finished 2nd., in their respective divisions. This was a tremendous effort by our juniors, when one must rea:ise that most teams that were played by us had been together for some four to five years. The season started this year with six teams and they are as follows:— Under 11 — coached by Tony R:goni. Under 12 — coached by Sam Tarascio. Under 14 — coached by Ricky Boscato. Under 16 — coached by Carlo Graser. Seniors — coached by Sergio Turkovic. Reserves — coached by Michael Catalano. This year, we feel, will prove to be the best year yet that the seniors will have. Last year proved to be most disappointing for the seniors, after being forced to play in the lower division. This year saw the appointment of Sergio Turkovic as Senior Coach and Michael Catalano as his assistant and due to their untiring efforts a "new team" has emerged. Sergio and Michael have been able to bring together two new dynamic teams with a new look to soccer and we have experienced fantastic, accurate play, both at home and away. I would like to take this opportunity of thanking most sincerely the soccer sub-committee for their hard work and determination in making soccer at the Veneto Club a successful sport. RELAZIONE DELLE ATTIVITA' CULTURAL!
GILBERTO MARTINI

AUDITORS REPORT TO THE MEMBERS OF VENETO SOCIAL CLUB (A Company Limited by Guarantee)
TO THE MEMBERS: The Club has not provided for depreciation of buildings which are included in the Balance Sheet at cost of $807,730. - refer Note 2. This is a departure from a Statement of Accounting Standards issued by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia and the Australian Society of Accountants. In our opinion depreciation should be charged to the Income and Expenditure Statement so as to absorb the cost of the buildings over their useful economic lives. The Club has

not calculated the financial effect of this departure from the accounting standard and it is impracticable for us to estimate this. With this exception, in our opinion:(a) the accompanying accounts, being the Balance Sheet and Income and Expenditure Statement, which have been prepared under the historical cost convention stated in Note 1, are properly drawn up in accordance with the provisions of the Companies Act, 1961 and so as to give a true and fair view of: (i) the state of affairs of the Club at 30th April 1979 and of the profit of the Club for the year ended on that date; and (ii) the other matters required by section 162 of that Act to be dealt with in the accounts; (b) the accounting records and other records, and the registers required by that Act to be kept by the Club have been properly kept in accordance with the provisions of that Act. TREASURER'S REPORT With the conclusion of the twelfth year of operations for the Club, it is my pleasant duty as Treasurer to report to you on the financial situation of the Club and the results of the past twelve months' activities. The year ended 30th April 1979 has not been one of capital works, but rather one of financial consolidation and one of developmental planning for future growth in available facilities for our members. The Club's current asset ratio has increased by some 50% as compared with the previous year, and ash funds disposable for development are at an all time high. I am happy to report that for the year just ended the Club earned a Total Net Surplus of $146,163.-. after payment of interest amounting to $21,214.-. and after providing for depreciation of $14,324.-. This result is very similar to last year's figure of $146,214.-. and is brought about by an increase in Trading Surplus of $1,442.-. and a fall in combined membership income of $1,493.-. a net decrease therefore of $51.-. Total Trading Income increased by some 17% over the previous year, but the Trading Surplus gained only 3%. This was caused by payments for wages increasing by 21% and by Operating and Overhead Expenses showing a rise of 13%. Gains on items of fixed expense were thereby lost to wages which increased at a higher rate than Trading Income. We are once again grateful to our various SubCommittees, in particular the Ladies Auxiliary, for their excellent contributions to the year's results. These Voluntary committees provided a substantial $10,945.-. over the year, whilst at the same time providing many and varied activities for our members. Looking at our present financial situation, we find that the Club's Accumulated Funds have now proceeded to a healthy $814,988.-. with the addition of this year's Net Surplus of $146,163.-., an increase of 22% over the position at 30th April, 1978. It is to be noted that together with the Depreciation provision of $14,324.-. an increase of $6,939.-. in Accured Expenses and a reduction of $2,424.-. in Accounts Receivable, the Net Surplus amount of $146,163.-. has been able to finance over the year, increases in Bank Accounts and Floats of $89,299.-. in Prepaid Expenses of $6,018.-. in Trading Stocks of $5,451.-. and in Equipment of $6,910.-. Added to this the following Loan repayments have been made — to the Carlton & United Breweries and the Commonwealth Trading Bank — $33,259.-., to Debenture Holders — $27,350.-., and to Foundation Members — $200.-., and finally Trade Creditors have been reduced by $1,363.-. Considering the current economic situation and that which has prevailed over the past twelve months, I am most pleased to advise that financially the Club has held its ground and indeed it has prepared itself for ambitious projects which will provide added interest and added activity. One can only thank the members for their continued loyalty and their valued patronage which have brought about the financial strength which the Club now enjoys. It is my sincere hope that this interest will be continually maintained for without it the Club cannot possibly progress or succeed. Finally I wish to record my thanks to the Club's administrative staff, in particular the Club's Manager and Administrator for their assistance to me in my first year as Treasurer. T. Pegoraro Treasurer

The Net Surplus of the Club for the year amounted to $146,163.-. 2. The Committee took reasonable steps, before the Income and Expenditure Statement and Balance Sheet of the Club were made out, to ascertain that all known bad debts were written off and adequate provision was made for doubtful debts. 3. At the date of this report, the Committee are not aware of any circumstances which could render the amount written off for bad debts, or the amount of the provisions for doubtful debts inadequate to any substantial extent. 4. At the date of this report the Committee are not aware of any circumstances which would render the values attributable to the current assets in the Club's Accounts misleading. 5. No charge on the assets of the Club has arisen since the end of the financial year to the date of this report to secure the liabilities of any other person. 6. No contingent liability has arisen since the end of the financial year to the date of this report. 7. The results of the Club's operations during the financial year have have not been substantially affected by any item, transaction or event of a material and unusual nature. 9. Since 30th April, 1979 and to the date of this report, in the opinion of the Committee, no item, transaction or event of a material and unusual nature which would affect substantially the results of the Club for the next succeeding financial year, has occurred. 10. Since the end of the previous financial year, no Committee Member has received or become entitled to receive a benefit not disclosed in the accounts, by reason of a contract between the Club and the Committee Member. REPORT OF THE "VENETO YOUTH SUB-COMMITTEE" The past twelve months have provided some rewards, along with problems for the "Youth Sub-Committee". To state that it was a smooth path for all concerned would be misleading, but, I feel, that Sub-Committee has emerged from this period with a more definite and beneficial outlook on its aims and objectives within the Veneto Social Club. We desperately need the support of tho senior Members, in that they take an interest in ensuring that that their children become "youth" Members. We exist, as a youth section, for the benefit of the whole V.S.C., of all its members, and therefore our ideals necessitate their full support and involvement. Junior members are the basis for the future of the Club. Over the past year we have continued providing various outdoor functions, eg., car rally, snow and beach picnics, etc., along with our very successful "Disco nights". The highlight, socially, of the year was the "Youth dinner-dance" which featured one of Australia's finest bands, "Stylus". I must at this point in time thank the manager of the Club, Mr. Biancotto, for his assistance in making this a most successful night. He must also be congratulated for his efforts throughout the year and the manner in which he has worked harmoniously with the youth of the Club. The young ones are not restricted to purely social activities, but also finance the various sporting teams within the Club. It is in this area that the rewards of the "Youth Sub-Committee" can be seen in the popularity and success heralding a new era within the Club. It is my wish that all sporting teams improve their
standard and achieve success and prestige on behalf of the entire Veneto Social Club. In conclusion I must thank my fellow committeemembers for their assistance over the past year, and I would also like to express my gratitude to Mr. Renzo Sgarbossa (Youth Liaison Officer) and Mr. Rino Tessarotto (Sports Manager) for their guidance and help. Carlo Graser President of the "Youth Sub-Committee"
Walter Reffo Segretario
G. Perosin Segretaria

REPORT FROM THE "V.S.C. SHOOTERS GROUP" 1978-79 has been a disappointing year for the shooters, since their ultimate goal was not achieved. This goal was the purchase of land at Werribee for Clay Target Shooting. Untaunted by this setback the subcommittee has increased its activities for the benefit of its members. The sub-committee is now a member of the Australian Clay Target Association and has represented the Veneto Social Club and Australia at the South Eastern Championships held at Singapore earlier last year with Mr. Frank Spinosa being one of the most successful representatives. We have also initiated Anneal shoot outs between

REPORT FROM THE "BILLIARDS SUB-COMMITTEE" Billiards, one of the popular amusements within the Club, has also been troublesome due to lack of supervision. One of the Sub-Committees dissolved itself during the year but hopefully this will improve with the recent formation of a new sub-committee. REPORT FROM THE "VENETO SQUASH CLUB" The Veneto Squash Club has currently seven teams competing in the Men's Eastern Mid-Week Squash Competition, and in view of the restricted number of players we have available it is a credit to all players that most of our teams are not only providing strong competition for the opposing side, but are also achieving a high level of success. At the time of writing this report three of the teams competing in the current autumn pennant look definite finals prospects. Teams one and two are holding top position and team four is in the top five with the competition having only four games to play. On behalf of every club member, I would like to extend to these three teams, congratulations and best wish for a successful finals series. Thanks to the support of Club members and the hard work of the Squash Club Committee this year, we have been able to provide squash shirts in club colours, thus giving our teams a very smart and professional appearance. I would like to extend an invitation to any Veneto Social Club member interested in playing squash in the coming Spring Pennant Season to register with the Squash Club. Young players in particular are needed to support and continue
the efforts and high standards of our older warriors. Details of Committee members are permanently displayed on our notice board in the foyer above the squash courts. As can be seen by the court bookings, squash is becoming a very popular sport amongst Social Club members. Courts are very difficult book, and we look forward to the recent decision of the Social Club Committee to build extra courts being immediately implemented. Problems currently faced by the Squash Club is not only the shortage of courts but the maintaining of the two courts which are being continually vandalised. It has now become a weekly chore to sweep the cigarette butts and a variety of sweets and ice-cream wrappers off the floor, and also clean the soft drink stains cff the walls. It appears that many Committee and Social Club Members have no intention of maintaining a facility that does not interest them. We hope the Social Club Committee will make some effort to alleviate the problems. I would like to thank all players for their participation and co-operation and also my Committee, Lou Dal Santo, Lino Paulazzo and Lou Dalla Riva, who together carried the bulk of the work load and contributed both time and effort to ensure the smooth running of the Club. S. Tarascio President — Veneto Squash Club
