Gentile Presidente, nella ricorrenza del 10.mo Anniversario della Fondazione del "Veneto Social Club" di Melbourne sono lietissimo di indirizzare a Lei, Signor Presidente, a tutto it Comitato, e a tutti i soci e simpatizzanti le mie piu vive felicitazioni. Sin dal mio arrivo a Melbourne sono stato in simpatici frequenti contatti con i membri di questo Club ed ho visto it Vostro magnifico edificio in costruzione crescere a poco a poco fino alla sua perfetta funzionalita odierna. Voi avete dato un magnifico esempio di quello che sa e pub fare la Collettivita italiana, e Ia Vostra opera 6 continuamente additata all'ammirazione di tutti. I Vostri sforzi, i Vostri sacrifici, Ia Vostra fede sono stati giustamente cosi premiati. Ed 6 pure con grande piacere che vediamo come it Club sia anche spesso non un centro esclusivo di veneti ma un punto di incontro di tutta la comunita e dei numerosi amici australiani. RELAZIONE DEL PRESIDENTE
PRESIDENT'S REPORT
It truly gives me immense satisfaction to deliver my second annual report as President of the ''Veneto Social Club", at a time when we are celebrating the tenth anniversary of its foundation. The past 12 months in the life of our Club have run true to form, and have been marked by a number of new achievements. Despite inflation, wage rises and the general upward trend of expenses, I am in a position to tell you, with justifiable pride, that the financial results for the social year 1976-77 have not only been positive, but have also exceeded every expectation. If I attempted now to name all those who have assisted us in reaching this memorable stage in the development of our Club, I would have to pen an impossibly long list, and at the end I would run the risk of overlooking someone. My gratitude, therefore, goes to each and everyone. I would like in particular to express my appreciation for the actions of the Managing Committee, whose members have not only undertaken the difficult task of leading and organizing, but whenever required have also carried out some of the humblest and most harduosus jobs, often neglecting their own family and business commitments. Contrary to some unfounded rumours, all activities have been carried out in a spirit of perfect co-operation and harmony. A special word of thanks must go to cay. Rolando Di Bari who has, with great integrity and skill, performed his managerial duties and achieved all-time records of efficiency. We are all deeply indebted to him for the enormous amount of work he has carried out in our midst. What should I say about the "Women's Auxiliary Committee"? No words can adeguately express our gratitude for the continuous and intelligent service performed by this group of wonderful ladies. We find them at all times near at hand, attentive and efficient. Their motto has always been, and still is: "To work for the good of the Club". It was through their splendid effort that our Club could make in the past year such a great contribution to the "Miss Italian Community Charity Quest". Moreover, they must be credited with the successful running of the "San Marco Restaurant", the monthly luncheons, the fashion parades, the perfect preparation of the reception halls for dinner-dances and other functions, and their eager contribution to so many facets of our Club life whose details could more than fill this
E' veramente con immenso piacere che vi presento questa mia seconda relazione annuale come Presidente del "Veneto Social Club", proprio nel momento in cui si celebra it decimo anniversario della fondazione del nostro sodalizio. Anche in questi ultimi 12 mesi ii nostro Club 6 passato di successo in successo e, malgrado inflazione, incrementi salariali ed aumenti generali di spese, sono in grado di comunicarvi, con giustificato orgoglio, che l'anno finanziario 1976-77 6 stato non solo positivo, ma ha superato ogni nostra aspettativa. Se dovessi ringraziare singolarmente tutti coloro che hanno collaborato per it raggiungimento di questo lusinghiero traguardo, ne verrebbe fuori un elenco troppo lungo e alla fine rischierei di dimenticare qualcuno. Esprimo, quindi, i sensi della mia gratitudine indistintamente a tutti. Ma voglio rivolgere un ringraziamento particolare al mio Comitato, i cui componenti non solo hanno svolto un enorme lavoro organizzativo, ma alla occorrenza si sono anche assunti le incombenze piO umili e pesanti, it piu delle volte trascurando persino i loro interessi personali. Contrariamente a qualche infondata diceria, tutto, lavoro 6 stato svolto in spirito di perfetta collaborazione ed armonia. Prova ne sia it risultato finanziario della gestione sociale. Un grazie particolare vada al cay. Rolando Di Bari che con alto senso d'onesta e capacita ha diretto it nostro Club, ottenendo dei risultati record. Apprezziamo tutti sinceramente ('enorme mole di lavoro che egli ha svolto fra noi. Cosa dovrei dire del Comitato Ausiliario Femminile? Sarebbe impossibile ringraziare adeguatamente queste brave signore per tutta la tenace e intelligente opera svolta. Le abbiamo avute sempre vicine, premurose ed efficienti, in ogni circostanza. II loro motto 6 stato sempre, e rimane, uno solo: "Lavorare per it bene del Club". Grazie alla loro attivita abbiamo potuto registrare nel trascorso anno it grande contributo del nostro Club al concorso di "Miss Italian Community", it successo del "Ristorante S. Marco", i "lunch" mensili, le sfilate di moda, I'impeccabile preparazione delle sale in occasione di cene danzanti e feste var!e• e infine la loro partecipazione a tante iniziative per descrivere le quali non mi basterebbero le pagine di questa pubblicazione. entire bor'klet. Thank you again, ladies! Without any shade of doubt, your continued co-operation will allow the Club to multiply its successes and overcome every obstacle. A similar vote of thanks is due to the ladies of the "Women's Bocce Sub-Committee" who have excelled in many sporting competitions and have not spared themselves in their organising efforts, especially during the tournament of the visiting "Marconi Club" team from Sydney. To the whole "Bocce Sub-Committee" of the Veneto Social Club must be conveyed the thanks of all members for their admirable accomplishments and the faultless organization displayed throught the year. Among the things that stand out are the marvellous reception accorded the bocce team from the Sydney "Marconi Club" and the successful trip of our own team to Adelaide for a tournament with the South Australian "Veneto Club". Our strong Bocce Group has carried out a very heavy program during the past year and the names of players have constantly appeared in the press columns, thus contributing further to the general prestige of the Club. Members of the "Youth Group, who have now the status of "Junior Members", have shown their enthusiasm and dedication to the progress of the Club by organising numerous social functions and sporting events, which are a credit to them all and deserve to be fully appreciated and supported. While on the subject, I would like to remind once again our members to see that their children become "Junior Members" now, thus obtaining the pleasure of their company on the Club premises and getting many advantages the youngsters would miss if they joined the Club at a later stage. The future of our Club is in the hands of our youth. I want to thank particularly:— The "Shooters Group", who have given the interested members of our Club the opportunity to band together and practice and enjoy their preferred leisure activity; — The "Veneto Social Club Chorus" which, under the direction of Maestro Nino Morandin, has achieved fresh successes by rendering most movingly some of our best-known alpine and folk songs, in the course of performances at our Club and at numerous celebrations within the Italian community; — The "Batchelors Group" who are raising funds by various means towards new equipment for the children playground, which in the meantime has become more functional and appealing; — The dinamic and untiring "voluntary barmen" who have literally cut down to zero the running expenses of the Bocce Bar; — Our "chef" Gino and all the kitchen and service staff, who have been equal to their task; — Our licence nominee, Nino Bettiol, always near at -hand and ready to defend the Club interests and the member's rights; — The secreterial and administrative personnel who have carried out their duties with accuracy; dedication and energy. During the past year our Constitution has been amended and on this occasion, as always previously, the help received from our legal adviser, Mr. Loris Sartori, has been determinant. His suggestions, as well as those from the Managing Committee and from various members, have enabled us to amend and perfect some sections of our Constitution which were either wanting or unworkable. Worth mentionig are the additions and alterations to the Rialto Bar, where members have now much more space available than it was the case before. Storerooms for equipment and liquor have been completed. Thanks to increased storage facilities, a well stocked bottle shop is now operating, and our members are urged to take full advantage of it by making their beer and liquor purchases at discount prices. In so doing, they help themselves and the Club. One of the major happenings of 1976-77 was the arrival of a beautiful genuine Venetian gondola, admired
il Club avra la vostra collaborazione, i successi si moltiplicheranno ed ogni difficolta sara superata. Analogo elogio e ringraziamento va nvolto alle signore del "Sottocomitato Bocciofilo Femminile" che non solo si sono distinte in tutte le gare sportive, ma hanno anche prestato un'opera preziosa nell'assistenza organizzativa in occasione delle varie manifestazioni, in particolare durante la visita dei bocciofili del "Marconi Club" di Sydney. All'intero "Sottocomitato Bocciofilo" del VSC esprimo tutta la gratitudine del sodalizio per l'intenso lavoro di un anno, svolto con inappuntabile organizzazione. Degni di particolare menzione sono la meravigliosa ospitalita data ai bocciofili del Marconi Club di Sydney e la riuscita della trasferta della nostra rappresentativa al Veneto Club di Adelaide. Durante tutto l'arco dell'anno, questo gruppo di appassionati ha sempre saputo svolgere un nutrito programma e i nomi dei loro giocatori sono settimanal mente apparsi sulla stampa contribuendo al prestigio generale del Club. I componenti del "Gruppo Giovanile", ora associati al Club come "Soci Juniores", hanno dimostrato tutto tl loro entusiasmo ed ii loro attaccamento al sodalizio organizzando numerose funzioni sociali ed attivita sportive che It onorano altamente e meritano apprezzamento e appoggio. A questo proposito, desidero esortare i soci affinche i loro figli si iscrivano al gruppo giovanile dei "Juniores", con il vantaggio ed tl piacere di averli cosi pia vicini, assicurando a loro, adesso, delle agevoavere lazioni per le quote sociali che non potranno se si iscriveranno da grandi. II futuro del nostro Club e nelle mani dei giovani. Voglio ricordare ancora, formulando i relativi ringraziamenti: — ii "Gruppo Cacciatori", che ha dato agli appassionati del nostro Club la possibility di riunirsi, divertirsi e dedicarsi alla loro attivita ricreativa preferita; — il "Coro del Veneto Social Club" che, sotto la direzione del M° Nino Morandin, ha riscosso nuovi successi, specie nell'esecuzione dei nostri piu bei motivi alpini e folcloristici, con applauditissime esibizioni dentro e fuori del Club, in numerose occasioni celebrative sia del nostro sodalizio che del recto della collettivita italiana; — it "Gruppo degli scapoli" che, con simpatiche iniziative proprie, raccoglie fondi per le attrezzature del "Parco giochi per bambini" che cosi diventa sempre pit) funzionale ed accogliente; — i dinamici e infaticabili "volontari" che hanno prestato servizio al Bar delle Bocce riducendo letteralmente a zero le spese di gestione; — it nostro "chef" Gino e tutto il personale di servizio, che sono sempre stati all'altezza del loro compito; — tl titolare della licenza, Nino Bettiol, sempre presente quando ci sono da difendere gli interessi del Club e i dtrtttt dei soci; — il personale degli uffici di segreteria e ammiproprio compito con diligenza nistrazione che ha svolto e senza risparmio dl tempo e d'energia. Durante l'anno appena conclusosi abbiamo apportato diverse modifiche allo Statuto e, come sempre in passato, anche in questa occasione tl contributo del nostro consulente legale, avv. Loris Sartori, 6 stato determinante. I suoi consigli, unitamente a quelli del Comitato e di diversi soci, hanno permesso di modificare e perfezionare alcyni articoli che si erano rivelati manchevoli o inefficaci. Un'altra realizzazione degna di nota 6 stata lo ampiamento del Bar Rialto, mettendo cosi a disposizione di soci ed amici molto piu spazio per trattenimenti di quanto non fosse possibile prima. E' stata ultimata anche la costruzione del "magazzino attrezzi e,liquori". Adesso con un adeguato spazio di magazzinaggio pub funzionare un fornitissimo "spaccio" per vendita di bevande alcooliche in bottiglia, di cui si possono avvantaggiare tutti i soci, realizzando un notevole risparmio nei loro acquisti e nello stesso tempo contribuendo alle finanze del Club. Fatto saliente del 1976-77 6 stato l'arrivo della meravigliosa autenticissima gondola veneziana, ammirata

by well over one million spectators at the Moomba Parade and now permanently placed outside the Club main entrance. Some other work has been done, other purchases made, other transactions finalised. Everything is detailed in the financial report. Throught the past year our Club has been honoured, as in previous years, by visiting Australian and Italian personalities. But the reunions which have made us really happy have been those with visiting groups of our beloved country-fellowmen from Veneto. They have come with their parish priests, their mayors, their provincial and regional officials, and have been made most welcome, in an atmosphere of fraternity and excitement, in our beautiful Club whose organization is being constantly envied and praised. Finally, my best wishes and thanks go to all members and their families, and to aft those who have in any way contributed to the success story of the Veneto Social Club. I am happy to take this opportunity to extend a warm welcome to our new Manager, cay. Virginio Turco, on whose organising ability and sincere friendliness we will certainly be able to rely. da oltre un milione di spettatori durante la sfilata del "Moomba" a Melbourne ed ora degnamente collocata di fronte all'ingresso della nostra sede. Vari altri lavori sono stati eseguiti, vari altri acquisti fatti, varie altre transazioni portate a termine: di tutto troverete spiegazione nella relazione finanziaria. Durante it trascorso anno sociale il Club ha continuato ad essere onorato dalle visite di numerose autorita australiane e venute dall'Italia. Ma le visite che ci hanno fattto maggiormente piacere sono state quelle dei nostri cars corregionali che, in gruppi accompagnati da parroci, sindaci ed autorita provinciali e regionali, sono stati a ph) riprese nostri ospiti, in un'atmosfera di fraternita e di commozione, in questa bellissima sede di un'organizzazione costantemente fatta segno di ammirazione e di elogi. affettuoso saluto e ringraziamento a tutti i soci, a tutti coloro che in qualsiasi maniera hanno contribuito al successo di tutte le attivita del Veneto Social Club. E in questa occasione mi 6 grato porgere un caloroso benvenuto al nostro nuovo "manager", il cay. DAL PRESIDENTE DELL' "HOUSE COMMITTEE"
Nel 1977 cade it decimo anniversario della fondazione del Veneto Social Club ed 6 certamente di buon auspicio it fatto che l'anno sociale appena conclusosi sia stato tinanziariamente pi0 proficuo degli anni precedent'. C'e stato un notevole flusso di nuove iscrizioni e sono state messe molte nuove attrezzature e nuovi locali a disposizione del frequentatori. II Club, giunto al pieno della sua efficienza, 6 pure giunto ad una fase cruciale di assestamento. A volte problemi vengono creati per scarsa comunicativa, a volte per l'abitudine di parlare o criticare senza riflettere, senza sforzarsi di migliorare la situazione. Brillanti i risultati della gestione finanziaria, grazie all'appoggio delle ditte dei nostri soci ed alle iniziative dei vari sottocomitati. Perb la frequenza di un gran numero di soci rimane molto scarsa, e pertanto molte attivita non possono essere proseguite come si dovrebbe e non tutte le attrezzature a disposizione vengono usate adeguatamente. Tengo a sottolineare che i Soci, nell'assemblea generale, esercitano it loro elementare diritto di eleggere II Comitato, ma dopo averlo eletto hanno it dovere di sostenerlo, affinche ogni componente del direttivo si senta costantemente stimolato a dare il meglio di se per far prosperare il Club. I Sod debbono soprattutto collaborare per rendere piu facile il compito specifico di ogni membro del Comitato, rispettando i suoi principii personali e ricordanda it sacrificio che compie nella sua carica che 6 del tutto onoraria. Fino a quando non ci si rendera conto di tutto questo, it sodalizio continuera a risentirne negativamente.
Esprirno la mia sincera gratitudine a tutti coloro che anche in quest'ultimo anno mi Sono stati vicini ed hanno fatto si che le nostre manifestazioni sociali si trasformassero in altrettanti successi. Ho il piacere di ricordare e ringraziare particolarmente it mio Sottocomitato Sociale (composto da S. Dalla Vecchia, V. Bisetto, A. Bortoli, D. Rigoni e P. All'atto di mandare questa relazione annuale alle stampe, sono trascorse appena cinque settimane dallo inizio del mio nuovo incarico. ovvio, quindi, che ho ben poco da dire. Posso comunque darvi una precisa assicurazione: faro, del mio meglio per non venir meno alla fiducia accordatami, affinche tl nostro Club possa proseguire con successo tutte quelle attivita che i miei predecessori hanno avviato, in un processo di miglioramento continuo. Conoscendo i miei collaboratori e l'amicizia che ci lega, sono sicuro che riuscira a mantener fede ai miei impegni. Cay. VIRGINIO TURCO Manager

un'attivita dopolavoristica, che mi ha dato immense soddisfazioni e l'occasione di crearmi numerosi amici in seno al nostro sodalizio, ormai noto in tutta Australia. Voglio augurarmi che it mio lavoro possa essere ricordato con it dovuto apprezzamento ed auguro a coloro che erediteranno le mansioni di "manager" gli stessi successi che io sono orgoglioso di aver conseguito, nella speranza che abbiano una maggiore collaborazione e soprattutto che riescano a far valere e rispettare la loro carica. Desidero ringraziare quanti mi hanno sostenuto ed hanno collaborato con me nelle molteplici attivita sviluppate in seno al Club e nelle iniziative realizzate sia in sede che fuori. Un senso di personale gratitudine vada ai Soci che mi hanno dato l'onore di coprire la carica di direttore del Club per tre anni incoraggiandomi e sostenendomi, anche se a volte, purtroppo, non ho potuto soddisfarli in pieno. II 1977 6 un anno di particolare solennita per it Veneto Social Club, che celebra tl decennale della sua fondazione. In questa occasione l'augurio 6 che it sodalizio possa continuare a prosperare, rimanendo a simbolo e difesa dei Veneti di Melbourne e dell'intera collettivita italiana. Esprimo infine l'augurio che it Club continui ad essere amato e sostenuto in particolare dai primissimi soci che lo hanno ideato, creato e fatto progredire.
Mi 6 stato gentilmente chiesto di presentare un piccolo rapporto, anche dopo le mie volontarie dimissioni presentate un mese prima della scadenza dell'anno di gestione 1976-77. Lo faccio con sommo piacere, non solo perche sono un socio fondatore del Club, ma anche perche mi sono accollato l'impegno di dirigerlo nel periodo ph) delicato e difficile, sviluppando ogni settore di iniziativa, e considerando questo mio incarico come un "hobby", come

Anche nel 1976-77, cosi come nei precedent' anni, it nostro Sottocomitato ha cercato, con quanto entusiasmo ci era possibile, di collaborare alla riuscita di tutte le gare di bocce.
RELAZIONE DEL COMITATO AUSILIARIO FEMMINILE
Anche it consuntivo del passato anno sociale si pub considerare estremamente soddisfacente, essendo riuscite a continuare e potenziare tutte le nostre tradizionali attivita ed interessando con le nostre iniziative grandi e piccoli. Grazie ad Eliana Giacomin, a Clara Catelli ed alle altre concorrenti al Concorso di "Miss Veneto Social Club 1976", 6 stato vinto per la quinta volta l'ambito titolo di "Charity Queen" — reginetta di beneficenza — nel concorso di Miss Italian Community. Si tratta di un titolo che conferisce notevole prestigio al nostro Club. Grazie ancora all'interessamento del comm. Carlo Valmorbida e della nostra Presidentessa, sig.ra Luciana Dal Bosco, abbiamo dotato it nostro Club di preziosi costumi regionali veneti e dello splendido quadro e tavolo veneziano, offerti appunto dal "Comitato Ausiliario Femminile" in occasione della festa d'anniversario del nostro sodalizio. Tutto ci6 e stato reso possibile dall'intenso lavoro che it nostro Comitato svolge e dal prezioso aiuto che le volontarie danno alle ausiliarie. E' grazie agli sforzi costanti di questi due gruppi di persone che il buffet nella Sala San Marco, i picnic, i pranzi mensili e tutte le altre nostre attivita godono di sempre maggiori successi. II lavoro delle ausiliarie a molto vasto ed impegnativo ed 6 ad esclusivo beneficio del Club. Basta pensare che la preparazione dei tavoli per tutte le cene danzanti e compito del nostro gruppo che presta la sua opera del tutto gratuitamente. Non dimentichiamo inoltre il paziente addobbo della gondola per la sfilata dell'ultimo Moomba dove, anche se non abbiamo vinto come speravamo, abbiamo nondimeno fatto una bella figura. Concludo augurandomi che quanto abbiamo fatto e continuiamo a fare sia di vostro gradimento, e ringraziando tutte le volontarie e it mio Comitato per il lavoro svolto durante il 1976-77. As a Sub-Committee of the Veneto Social Club, we take this opportunity to report officially for the first time on office bearers and membership of the "Gruppo Cacciatori". Office bearers are:- T. Maloni (president), A. Bortoli (vice-president), R. Dal Sasso (treasurer), B. Cecchetto (secretary), and six committee members:- M. De Martino, F. Spinosa, J. Spagnolo, E. Favrin, D. Simionato, P. Serafin. Total membership of the Gruppo is 296. Our group has accumulated funds in excess of $6,000 on behalf of the Club. We have promoted the sport of target clay shooting, graduating from an inexperienced group to one that has become semi-professional. At present we are negotiating with the "Victorian Clay Target Association" with the view of joining this Association. In the past year we have conducted one shoot per month and two successful dinner-dances. A "Sportman and Family Day" was held at the "Victorian Field & Game Ass.", Lysterfield, the honours of the day going to Mr. M. Zovi. As space is limited, we cannot mention all the winners of the events held by the Gruppo during the past year. A successful picnic, organised by M. De Martino, was held on the Club's grounds. I would like to take this opportunity, on behalf of the Sub-Committee, tp thank the members for their attendance and support in the past year. Also special thanks go to all our sponsors. Costituito due anni fa, it "Coro del Veneto Social Club" ha gia riportato una serie di lusinghieri successi ed 6 in fase di costante miglioramento, grazie all'impegno ed alla serieta di tutti i suoi componenti ed alla appassionata guida del Maestro Morandin. II successo 6 tanto pi0 rimarchevole, quando si considera che tutti i coristi sono dei dilettanti, dei padri di famiglia con impegni di lavoro quotidiano, che hanno raggiunto tutto it loro magnifico affiatamento soltanto per merito delle loro capacita , del loro entusiasmo e della loro dedizione. II Coro ha partecipato a numerosi concerti, sia nella sede del Veneto Social Club sia presso altri clubs italiani ed australiani. II gruppo, inoltre, a stato una valida rappresentanza artistica e folcloristica italiana a numerosi festival e manifestazioni •etniche a Melbourne e in altri centri del Victoria. L'unico rammarico 6 quello di non potere accettare tutte le richieste che ci pervengono e che sono molto numerose. The past year has shown the Youth playing a more dynamic role in the operations of the Veneto Club, both social and sporting. The requirements of the sons and daughters of the members of our Club are becoming more demanding and varied. In this respect the Youth SubCommittee has worked hard to cater for these needs. We have continued to provide our usual out-door social functions (chicken Champagne Breakfast, Beach Picnic, Car Rally, Snow Picnic etc.), to enable the younger generation to get out and enjoy life. Coupled with these are our monthly Rock Dances and Disco Nights which are an enormous success, both socially and financially. The highlight of the year, socially, was the Youth Dinner Dance held in early March, which provided an entertaining night for all and must surely herald this function as an annual event to be looked forward to greatly. I must now take time to personally thank my fellow Youth Sub-Committee members for their hard work during the past year and trust that future Sub-Committees endeavor to uphold the high standard achieved by the present Committee. Our Youth Sub-Committee is not solely concerned with providing social functions but is also engaged in the ever growing sporting life of the Club. With the increase in standard and number of the sporting teams, the Youth are becoming a part of the dynamic changes taking place at the Club. The sports teams, well established at the moment, are netball, basketball and soccer which require the encouragement from all sections of the Veneto Club. Not only do our teams compete in their various competitions but also represent the Club in inter-Club challenges such as our own "Sports Spring Carnival". What does the future hold for the Youth of the Club? I hope the aspirations of the Youth sporting be they
social, or both, be fulfilled and trust that they will work in harmony with the mechanism of the Veneto Social Club. DALLILA SARETTA (President) • • • The past year has proven to be not only a financially and socially successful year for the Youth of the Club, but a pleasure for me to work with such dedicated young people. The eagerness of the Youth Sub-Committee members has enabled us to work in harmony throughout the year and I only hope that future Sub-Committees operate in such a smooth efficient manner. It is at this point of time that I must thank all the members of the Sub-Committee for their efforts over the past year and I hope that they received satisfaction from their efforts. The Youth, I feel, are the Club of tomorrow and even though people often have their complaints regarding the Youth of the Club, it is often overlooked the good done by them. Financially they have enabled the Club to operate all the sporting teams existing within the Club and have also made generous contributions to the Social Club. Socially, the Youth have provided varous functions such as the popular rock dances and discos for the sons and daughters of our Club. My only wish is that the future ambitions of the Youth are achieved and that people take more notice of their efforts, offering more assistance where possible. They are the foundation of the future and help from the older members of the Club will never be refused as the Youth aim to improve the name of OUR CLUB. VITTORIO BISETTO (Youth Liason Officer)

I PRIMI DIECI ANNI DI UN'ORGANIZZAZIONE DI VENETI SEMPRE GIOVANI (di anni o di cuore) di NINO RANDAZZO Sarebbe difficile, oltre the superfluo, scrivere una storia cronologica dettagliata del "Veneto Social Club" di Melbourne, un resoconto minuzioso dei suoi primi dieci anni di vita. 27 MAGGIO 1967 Questa cena danzante alla Copacabana Hall di Brunswick segno l'inizio ufficiale dell'attivita sociale del Veneto Social Club di Melbourne.
Nefla stessa occasione del ballo inaugurale del Club, un gruppo esplode in un'improvvisata esibizione corale: un'espressione tipica di schiettezza e cordiality veneta, un canto augurale per le sorti della nascente organizzazione.

S.E. ii Vescovo mons. E V. Perkins mentre benedice la sede del Veneto Social Club in occasione dell'inaugurazione ufficiale. Da sinistra: u cay. Duilio Barro, presidente del V.S.C., l'on. Bill Snedden, leader liberale al Parlamento federale, Rino Pozzebon, la sig.ra Bonis, A. Saretta. L'8 dicembre 1973 rappresenta la data pill memorabile nella storia del Veneto Social Club: la inaugurazione ufficiale della sua moderns sede a Bulleen, o pin precisamente della prima fase dei lavori di un'imponente realizzazione destinata ad avere in futuro ulteriori e prestigiosi sviluppi. Alla presenza di una folla di oltre tremila persone, con in prima fila autorita italiane ed australiane e i dirigenti del Club, l'on. Bill Snedden, leader liberale nel Parlamento federale, ha dichiarato i1 Veneto Social Club ufficialmente aperto. Il Vescovo ausiliario di Melbourne, Mons. Perkins, ha benedetto it nuovo edificio. I discorsi ufficiali sono stati pronunciati dal cay. Duilio Barro, dall'Ambasciatore d'Italia in Australia, dott. Paolo Canale, dall'on. Snedden, e dall'avv. Scomparin, presidente del C.I.C. Il Presidente del Consiglio italiano on. Mariano Rumor, vicentino, si e congratulato con i suoi corregionali di Melbourne con it seguente telegramma al cay. Ecco come l'architetto ERMINIO SMREKAR, nativo di Trieste, ha delineato it processo creativo, I'ispirazione che ha informato la progettazione e l'esecuzione della sede del "Veneto Social Club": "Quando I'esecutivo del Veneto Social Club mi affidava I'incarico di progettare la nuova sede di Melbourne. alla complessita dei problemi usualmente associati a simile impresa, si affiancava — nelle mie intenzioni — tl desiderio di riuscire ad illustrare, con Ia funzionalita di un fabbricato modernissimo, i1 valore simbolico di un'opera capace di esprimere ambizioni e desideri di una comunita dignitosa e vitale qual'e indubbiamente Ia colonia veneta di

"Anche la scelta dei materiali doveva riflettere gli attributi di un popolo cosi largamente legato per tradizione a quanto di piu solido e poetico insieme esiste in un'architettura: it cemento armato. Per it "Veneto Social Club" quest'anno cade ufficialmente it decimo anniversario, poiche la prima assemblea generale, dove fu approvato lo statuto del sodalizio, si tenne appunto il 10 agosto 1967. Ma uno dei protagonisti di quella vicenda iniziale, e primo segretario del Club, Floriano Marchesin, giustamente sottolinea che it seme fu gettato parecchio tempo prima. "Nell'aprile del 1966 — ricorda Marchesin — cinque veneti, soliti ad incontrarsi nei giorni di fine settimana in un campo di bocce che era appena un rustico recinto di vecchie lamiere, commentavano amaramente sullo squallore in cul erano costretti a radunarsi. Dai brevi e fortuiti incontri di quei cinque "pionieri" (Nino Bettiol, Aldo Saretta, Riccardo Crema, Angelo Silvestrini e Valerio Celotto) sorse l'idea di costruire una casa per veneti, un centro di ritrovo

INSERTO-RICORDO DEL DECENNALE del "buon polenton" che conservava ancora le sue vecchie ma belle tradizioni". Al nucleo originario si aggiunsero ben presto altri, e segnatamente: Duilio Barro, Lino Bettiol, Rino Bergamin. Primo presidente del comitato provvisorio — che per le prime tre volte si riuni in casa di Rino Bergamin e per Ia quarts in casa di Mario Bonis — fu eletto Nino Bettiol. Nella terza riunione, questi si dimise e fu sostituito da Duilio Barro, che sarebbe poi rimasto ininterrottamente in carica fino al maggio 1975, guidando I'organizzazione nelle fasi ptu burrascose e insieme piu costruttive e lasciando infine la presidenza (pur mantenendo ii suo costante attaccamento al Club) con la nobile affermazione: "Ho gib dato tutto it mio contributo al limite delle mie capacity umane". II 1967, dunque, vide Ia formale costituzione del primo comitato direttivo effettivo del "Veneto Social Club". Da quella data gli eventi si snodarono a ritmo incalzante. Nel 1968 l'assemblea generale approvava all'unanimita e Barro firmava it contratto d'acquisto dell'area per la cede a Bulleen. II superamento delle difficolta d'ordine economico, amministrativo, tecnico e burocratico avrebbe richiesto altri quattro anni prima del varo definitivo della opera, la cui progettazione era stata affidata all'architetto triestino Erminio Smrekar. Nel frattempo i soci non rimanevano con le mani in mano. Davano vita ad una nutrita serie di manifestazioni sociali; facevano sentire la presenza ufficiale della componente veneta nella fiorente vita associativa dell'intera collettivita italiana di Melbourne; raggiungevano tI numero statutario di 700

II Veneto Social Club 6 quasi una 'tappa d'obbligo" per numerose personality italiane ed australiane di passaggio a Melbourne. E' ii 25 marzo 1975 ed anche Gina Lollobrigida aggiunge it suo nome al lungo elenco di illustri osptti del sodalizio veneto.

INSERTO-RICORDO DEL DECENNALE iscritti (oggi sono ben oltre tl doppio); contribuivano intorno a 40 mila dollari in prestiti personali per la costruzione della sede (oltre, naturalmente, alle decine di migliaia di dollari in utili derivanti dalle manifestazioni sociali); creavano i subito attivissimi comitati e sottocomitati femminile, bocciofilo, sportivo e giovanile; sul suolo destinato alla futura sede impiantavano i primi improvvisati campi di bocce e un rustico bar. Con un efficiente "sottocomitato per i lavori di costruzione" capeggiato da Tom Agnoletti, l'inizio dei lavori aveva luogo it 27 luglio 1972. Straordinario fu ii contributo di lavoro volontario e materiali di costruzione dato da soci individuali e persino da varie ditte appaltatrici. L'8 dicembre 1973, la solenne inaugurazione ufficiale della nuova sede coronava degnamente anni di speranze e di lotte sostenute unicamente da un luminoso ideale di triplice fratellanza: italiana, veneta e italo-australiana. Negli ultimi quattro anni it "Veneto Social Club" non e rimasto esclusivamente un centro di attivita a sfondo regionale, bensi ha assunto anche un ruolo-guida di tutta la vita associativa italiana di Melbourne, e diventato un prestigioso punto di riferimento per la nostra collettivita emigrata, e stato, e rimane, un ambiente ideale per i pia importanti incontri italo-australiani. Ma soprattutto ha saputo avviare un meritorio processo di valorizzazione defile migliori tradizioni sociali e culturali venete: un inestimabile retaggio offerto alle nuove generazioni, alle quali e dato in tal modo di riscoprire con orgoglio le loro "radici". A questo proposito, suonano quanto mai opportune e significative le parole del sempre dinamico, instancabile (anzi, vulcanico) cay. Duilio Barro nella relazione sul suo ultimo anno di gestione in qualita di presidente: "II circolo giovanile "Veneto Social Club",
costituito dal figli e dalle figlie dei nostri soci, a stato spesso oggetto di proteste presso tl direttore e presso it comitato, per cose come spreco di carta igienica, portacenere rovesciati, chiasso, ecc. E con ci6? Dobbiamo rassegnarci con buona grazia, perche quando gli adolescenti di oggi saranno piu grandi e impareranno a non sprecare la carta igienica, a non rovesciare i portacenere e a non fare chiasso, ci sara un'altra generazione di adolescenti che fara esattamente le stesse cose. E it ciclo ricomincera di nuovo. Secondo me, la Sezione Giovanile a it sale e pepe del nostro Club". Un concetto che riecheggia l'attuale presidente, Tom Agnoletti, nella sua relazione sull'anno sociale 1976-77: "II futuro del Club 6 nelle mani dei giovani". E' questo, ritengo, l'aspetto pi0 rilevante, it messaggio convincente che emana dalla struttura e dallo spirito del "Veneto Social Club" odierno: 0 un'organizzazione di giovani, non importa se giovani di anni o di cuore, che assicurano nuove energie e nuovi successi ancora per molti decenni a venire.

AUDITOR'S REPORT TO THE MEMBERS OF VENETO SOCIAL CLUB (A Company Limited by Guarantee)
TO THE MEMBERS: The Club has not provided for depreciation of buildings which are included in the balance sheet at cost of $793977 — refer Note 1. This is a departure from 3 Statement of Accounting Standards issued by The Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia and the Australian Society of Accountants. In our opinion depreciation should be charged to the Income and Expenditure Statement so

The Club has not calculated the financial effect of this departure from the accounting standard and it is impracticable for us to estimate this. With this exception, in our opinion:(a) the accompanying accounts, being the balance sheet and income and expenditure statement are properly drawn up in accordance with the provisions of the Companies Act, 1961 and so as to give a true and fair view of: (i)
the state of affairs of the Club at 30th April, 1977 and of the surplus of the Club for the year ended on that date; and
(ii)
the other matters required by section 162 of that. Act to be dealt with in the accounts;

I take this opportunity to thank the Club's administrative staff for their excellent work and their dedication to their responsabilities over the past twelve months. I also thank the members for the support they have given their Club, for their regular and constant attendances and participation in its activities. STATEMENT BY COMMITTEE MEMBERS
It is my privilege to report to you on the financial results of the tenth year of the Club's activities and for the twelve months ending on the 30th April, 1977. I am pleased to relate that for this period the Club earned a Net Surplus of $193442.90, after covering interest totalling $28206.20 and after allowing for depreciation amounting to $12618.76. The Trading Surplus for the year reached $69892.52 on a total Trading Income of $686269.35. This represents an average of $13197 per week and indicates an average weekly expenditure by each member of just over $10.00. Total Trading Income increased by 20.9% over the previous year and the Trading Surplus improved by 117.6%. Wages increased by 27.2% but operating expenses increased by only 12.9%. The gains on fixed overhead expenses are therefore obvious. With the intake of new members during the year Membership Fees, and Admission Fees in particular, swelled to $93270 as against the previous year's figure of $40427. Contributions from the Ladies Auxiliary and the various Sub-Committees were again excellent, reaching $23232. Considering that these amounts are raised entirely from voluntary work by the members of these sub-committees and by the ladies of the Auxiliary, their efforts and dedication merit our warmest thanks and appreciation. As a result of the Net Surplus of $193443, Accumulated Funds have progressed to $522611, an increase of 58.8% on the figure of $329168 at 30.4.1976. The Net Surplus figure together with the Depreciation allowance and small increases in Trade Creditors, have financed $100723 in Capital Expenditure, $25026 in Stock increases, $18378 in Bank Balances increases, increases in Accounts Receivable of $18450, a reduction of Building Creditors totalling $18524 and a reduction in Loans from The Commonwealth Trading Bank and the Carlton and United Breweries amounting to $33253. The 1976/77 year has therefore been a very successful one financially, trading activity increasing with the Increase in membership during the year. This together with the opening of the Bottle Shop has brought about a larger investment in stocks. Capital Expenditure of $100723 was caused mainly by the extensions to The Rialto Bar, the construction of the tennis courts and the liquor store and bottle shop, and by purchases of addi-

THE COMMITTEE'S STATUTORY REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30TH APRIL, 1977
The Committee of the Veneto Social Club submit herewith the Club's Balance Sheet as at 30th April, 1977 and Income and Expenditure Statement for the year ended on that date and report as follows: 1. The Net Surplus of the Club for the year amounted to $193443. 2. Debentures issued during the financial year totalled $550. 3. The Committee took reasonable steps, before the Income and Expenditure Statement and Balance Sheet of the Club were made out, to as certain that all know bad debts were written off and adequate provision was made for doubtful debts. 4. At the date of this report, the Committee are not aware of any circumstances which could render the amount written off for bad debts, or the amount of the provisions for doubtful debts inadeguate to any substantial extent. 5. At the date of this report the Committee are not aware of any circumstances which would render the values attributable to the current assets in the Club's accounts misleading. 6. No charge on the assets of the Club has arisen since the end of the financial year to the date of this report to secure the liabilities of any other person. 7. No contingent liability has arisen since the end of the financial year to the date of this report.
8. No contingent liability or other liability has become enforceable or is likely to become enforceable within a period of twelve months after the end of the financial year which, in the opinion of the Committee, will or may effect the ability of the Club to meet its obligations as and when they fall due. 9. During the year membership was increased with a resultant increase from membership and admission fees. With this exception, in the opinion of the Committee, the results of the Club's operations during the financial year have not been substantially affected by any item, transaction or event of a material and unusual nature. 10. Since 30th April, 1977 and to the date of this report, in the opinion of the Committee, no item, transaction or event of a material and unusual nature which would affect substantially the results of the Club for the next succeeding financial year, has occurred. 11. Since the end of the previous financial year, no Committee Member has received or become entitled to receive a benefit not disclosed in the accounts, by reason of a contract between the Club and the Committee Member with the exception of small contractual building work carried out by firms in which some committee members have substantial financial interest. The 1976-77 sporting season at the Veneto Social Club has seen a gradual advancement and enlargement of all activities. My precedessor had laid down guidelines which I have endeavored to follow and have culminated in a successful sporting year. Though the past twelve months have not been without their problems — especially as far as the Soccer teams are concerned — now it can be said that these have been smoothed out, and the teams are on the whole playing better than ever under their new coach, Mr. Claude Fancial. This season also saw the commencement of an insurance cover for both teams, which have now been promoted to the Provisional League. The soccer teams are fortunate in having Carlo Graser and Adrian Spadaro, who have worked hard end deserve to be thanked for a job well done. The last twelve months also saw the Squash First Team come first in their finals, while the Third Team came third and the Forth Team came second in their respective finals. For this success many thanks go to the Squash Sub-Committee, and in particular to John Dal Santo and Danny Dodrico. The Basketball team has seen the arrival of a new coach, Mr. Terry Wallace, who has been the reason behind a much improved performance this year. Mention must also be made of the hard work of Renato Celotto,
who virtually established basketball as a sport at the Club. Netball has been represented by six teams and there are now more than fifty girls actively involved in playing this game at the Club. This season an immense improvement has occurred in all the teams. This has been due mainly to the expert coaching of Mrs. Gloria Jays. The Netball First Team came runners-up this season, which was unfortunate after seeing them win every match during the year. The Second Team won the Premiership of the Victorian Catholic Netball Association. In the Victorian Netball competitions, our teams came runners-up in "Section 7" and won the Grand Final in "Section 9". Special thanks to Edda Bonis for the time she has spent in developing the netball teams. The Spring Sport Carnival went smoothly and without a hitch. This was due to the organization and dedication of the Sports Sub-Committee. The Sports Presentation Night, which saw as in previous years the coming together of the participating clubs that had been victorious in the Carnival events, was a great success. Finally, I must thank Gina Barro, Remo Crema and Vittorio Bisetto for their assistance and work throught the past twelve months. ROMANO PIVA (Sports Manager)
