In queste realizzazioni ed attivita' desidero particolarmente apprezzare, egregio Cavalier Barro, it Suo lungo e personale interessamento, che ha dato un impulso veramente decisivo, fin dal suo concepimento, alla attuazione del Club.

PRESIDENT'S REPORT

RELAZIONE DEL PRESIDENTE

It gives me great pleasure to present my ninth annual report to the general meeting of the Veneto Social Club.

Our success is due to unity, ability, careful and positive planning, and also a certain amount of luck.

I have never tried to run the Club on my own. I have always had a steady stream of executive committee members, solicitors and auditors behind me.

The Club administration has never been in better shape. All bookwork is completely up-to-date and self explanatory. Past year's performance, as far as employees are concerned, particularly in the restaurant, was an immense improvement compared with previous years.

The staff have settled into their jobs and have shown better results. Time is not being wasted. Members respond with a more enthusiastic patronage of our Club services.

The Club manager, cay. Rolando Di Bari, must be given most credit for it all.

The Bocce Section, which is our most significant sporting_ section, has again held many tournaments and given the Club much prestige.

The Ladies Auxiliary has again been very successful in its many functions. The Ladies have continued to raise money in their untiring efforts towards charity and the running of the "Miss Veneto Quest".

A vote of recognition goes to the Sports manager, to the Youth Club and to the Sports sub-committees for the wonderful work they have accomplished for squash, biliards, table tennis, the soccer ground, and for keeping all sporting facilities in good order and condition.

The Veneto Youth Club, which is made up of member's sons and daughters, has often been reported to the manager and committee for things like tearing toilet paper, tipping ashtrays, etc. So whot ! We will have to bear with it, because as they will get older and learn not to tear toilet paper and tip ashtrays, another generation of youngsters will come along and do the same.

E' mio grande piacere presentare la mia nona relazione annuale all'assemblea generale dei soci del Veneto Social Club.

II nostro successo e' dovuto alla nostra unita', capacita', programmazione attenta e positiva, ed anche ad certa dose di fortuna. Non ho mai avuto la pretesa di dirigere it Club da solo. Ho sempre avuto alle mie spalle l'appoggio dei consiglieri del comitato, di consulenti legali e di esperti finanziari.

L'amministrazione del Club non e' mai stata migliore di oggi. Tutti i registri di contabilita' sono sempre aggiornati e chiarissimi. II rendimento dei dipendenti, particolarmente nel servizio di ristorante, e' di gran lunga migliorato nel corso dell'anno sociale appena conclusosi.

II personale ha acquistato piena padronanza dei propri compiti ed ha conseguito migliori risultati. Sono state eliminate le perdite di tempo. I soci si avvalgono con crescente entusiasmo dei servizi del Club. Al direttore del Club, cay. Rolando Di Bari, va gran parte del merito per tutto questo.

La Sezione Bocce, the comprende la nostra piu' importante attivita' sportiva, ha continuato ad organizzare tornei e ad accrescere tl prestigio del Club.

II Comitato Femminile ha ancora una volta ottenuto pieni successi in tutte le sue iniziative. Le gentili signore hanno continuato a raccogliere fondi per beneficenza ed a curare l'organizzazione del concorso di bellezza per "Miss Veneto".

Un doveroso riconoscimento vada al direttore sportivo, al Club Giovanile, ai sottocomitati sportivi per l'ottimo lavoro svolto nei settori "squash", bigliardi, tennis da tavolo, campo di calcio, e per aver mantenuto in perfette condizioni di funzionalita' tutte le attrezzature sportive.

II Club Giovanile (Veneto Youth Club), costituito dai figli e dalle figlie dei nostri soci, e' stato spesso oggetto di proteste presso it direttore e presso it comitato per cose come spreco di carts igienica, portacenere rovesciati, ecc. E con cio' ? Dobbiamo rassegnarci,

So the cycle will start again. In my opinion, the Youth section is the salt and pepper of the Club.

As you can see from the financial statement, our turnover has increased considerably. All our commitments during the past year have been met. I am proud of this.

Proper direction, constant supervision of staff, good maintenance, a lot of voluntary work and no wastage of any kind, are some of the reasons why inflation has not penetrated into our Club to the extet it might have affected other organizations.

A feasibility study has been carried out for further capital expenditure in 1975-76. Firstly, proper accommodation for children such as playground and creche, will be built. Then tennis courts will be constructed. Finally, we may have to increase our car park facilities to cope with huge crowds on traditional occasions, such as "La Testa delle castagne" on Mother's Day, New Year's party, etc.

A new liquor bar and espresso coffee bar have been installed on the mezzanine floor. Carpet has been laid and tables and chairs provided for the comfort of members, especially as this part of the building is very handy for players of the various sports. It is called "Rialto Bar". Also this year, the Bocce enclosure and the Soccer ground have been completed The garden is in the process of being turned into a replica of Melbourne Botanical Gardens. Credit is due to the Chairman of the Building Committee, who has again done a fantastic job.

After my long association with the Veneto Social Club, extending over the past 8 years, I regret to announce that I have handed my resignation as President to the Committee. This decision has been reached on the realization that I have contributed to the limit of my capabilities.

In spite of all the late hours and hard decisions, we have worked well as a team and we have achieved much. I do not want to forget the marvellous loyalty accorded to me by the committee and the general staff over the past years. Very few people can be as proud as I am of the devotion that has been shown to me.

Over the past eight years various changes have been made to the structure and workings of the management committee. As your President, I have put this committee together and like to think in so doing "I have built a motor", which has guaranteed reliable service and performance. The secret is to service this "motor" and prevent unnecessary maintenance and repairs.

The new President may design a "new motor" different from my model, with new parts. But he must not neglect the "old parts". The tenacity of the "old parts" has already been proven, and one must not lose sight of the fact that there is need to look after all "nuts and bolts" of the motor.

A committee member has moved and the whole committee has carried a motion that I should continue to be a financial consultant on capital expenditure for the Club. I have accepted. I also want to point out that discussions have been held with our Bank on the matter of personal guarantee for the overdraft. The Bank has indicated to me that all consideration and assistance will be given.

I would like to conclude by wishing the new President, the committee members and the Club, taken as one united team, every success. Each and everyone must remember that the Club can only go forward if all the cogs in the wheel work together. My word of advice is that when we pull together we stand together.

perche' quando 911 adolescenti di oggi ca:-anno piu' grandi e impareranno a non sprecare la carts igienica e a non rovesciare i portacenere, ci sara' un'altra generazione di adolescenti che fara' esattamente le stesse cose. E ii ciclo ricomincera' di nuovo. Secondo me, la Sezione Giovanlle e' II sale e pepe del Club.

Come potrete constatare dal bilancio, le partite di entrate ed uscite sono aumentate notevolmente. Tutti gli impegni e scadenze sono stati rispettati nel corso del passato anno. Sono orgoglioso di cio'. Adeguate direttive, costante controllo del personale, esperta manutenzione, molto lavoro gratuito e nessuno spreco volontario, costituiscono alcuni del motivi per cui I'inflazione non e' penetrata nel nostro Club nella misura che forse ha colpito altre organizzazioni.

E' stato studiato un piano di programmazione In relazione ad ulteriori stanziamenti nell'anno 1975-76. Prima di tutto saranno costruiti locali e attrezzature per l'accudimento dei piu' piccoli, quail stanza e giardino per giochi e un nido d'infanzia. Poi saranno costruiti I campi di tennis. Inoltre sara' forse necessario allargare I'area dell'autoparcheggio, onde potere adeguatamente accogliere le enormi folle che si riversano in occasioni tradizionali, quali la "Festa delle castagne", la notte di Capodanno, ecc.

Un nuovo bar di alcoolici e caffe' espresso e' stato aperto al mezzanine. Battezzato "Rialto Bar" e lotato di magnifici tappeti e ottime sedie e tavoli, e' un punto di ritrovo molto popolare specie per i giocatori impegnati nei van sport. Anche nel trascorso anno, sono stati cmpletati I campi di bocce e it campo di calcio. II giardino sta diventando un secondo giardino botanico di Melbourne. II merito e' del presidente del Comitato Costruzione che ha svolto un lavoro straordinario.

Dopo un interessamento personale di otto anni nelle vicende del Veneto Social Club, sono spiacente di annunciarvi che ho gia' presentato le mie dimissioni come Presidente al comitato. Ho raggiunto questa decisione dopo essermi convinto che ho gia' dato tutto ii mie contributo al limite delle mie capacita'.

Nonostante tutte le lunghe discussioni e le difficili decisioni, abbiamo svolto un ottimo lavoro di gruppo ed abbiamo veramente conseguito lusinghieri risultati. Non voglio qui ignorare tutta la leale collaborazione che mi e' stata accordata dal comitato e da tutto il personale in genere nei passati anni. Poche persone possono essere orgogliose al pan di me per it senso di devozione mostratomi a tutti i livelli. Durante gli ultimi otto anni, numerosi mutamenti sono stati apportati alla struttura ed alle funzioni del comiato direttivo. In qualita' di Presidente, ho it piacere di potervi dire che nell'organizzare it comitato "ho costruito un motore", in modo da garantire un soddisfacente servizio e rendimento. II segreto consiste nel curarsi di questo "motore" e prevenire difficili rattoppamenti e tardive riparazioni.

II nuovo Presidente potra' anche creare un nuovo "modello", diverso dal mie, con pezzi nuovi. Ma non dovra' trascurare I "vecchi pezzi". La forza dei "vecchi pezzi" e' comprovata e non si deve dimenticare che per fare funzionare una macchina e' necessario che tutti gli ingranaggi siano in perfetta posizione.

Un consigliere ha proposto e ii comitato ha approvato la mozione che lo rimanga come consulente finanziario per i nuovi progetti d'espansione del Club. Ho accettato l'incarico. Voglio anche ricordare che abbiamo avuto discussioni con i dirigenti della nostra banca in merito alla questione delle garanzie personali per l'eccedenza a debito sul nostro conto. Mi e' stato comunicato che ci verra' data ogni considerazione e assistenza in merito.

Desidero concludere augurando al nuovo presidente, al nuovo comitato e al'intero Club, considerato come un'entita' unica, ogni possibile successo. Dobbiamo tutti ricordare che it Club puo' progredire solo se ognuno fara' la sua parte. Nel salutarvi, la mia raccomandazione e': restare uniti per restare in piedi.

SECRETARY'S REPORT

Up to last year the Club's activities had been shadowed by teething problems.

The present Committee took quick and decisive action and implemented new ideas which have proved extremely fruitful for the Club, and naturally for its members.

The appointment of cay. Rolando Di Bari as Manager of the Club was perhaps the major factor in the great improvement shown in the Restaurant over the past 12 months.

Another important factor has been the tremendous costing and accounting work carried out by our Finance Director, Mr. Gazzola. The combinatin of cay. Di Bari as Manager and Mr. Gazzola as Finance Director und^ the direction of our President, cay. Duilio Barro, h given the Club a tremendous boost, both financially ank socially, and laid the solid foundations for future success.

We are also heavily indebted to all my fellow members of the Committee, who have worked hard over the past 12 months and all of whom have carried out their responsabilities with a true sense of purpose and integrity. These men, with the help of the various SubCommittees which they formed, have given tremendous service to the Club, and I sincerely hope that their work is appreciated by all members.

The outgoing Committee has set very high standards for future Committees to maintain.

In the course of the past 12 months, we have undertaken to re-construct the Members Register, and we have also recently commenced to operate a Travel Agency Service.

I would like to thank both Mrs. Tina Colautti and Mrs. Evelyn Wilkins for the wonderful support they have given me over the past 12 months. I would also like to thank Mr. Gazzola for his assistance to me during my term as Secretary.

Mi si permetta di esprimere, anche se motto brevemente, la mia gratitudine al Presidente ed ai membri del Comitato per la piena collaborazione che ho ottenuto in ogni circostanza. Un ringraziamento vada ancora al personale, perche' senza di esso non si sarebbero potuti raggiungere i risultati prefissici. Un grazie di cuore ancora a tutti i Soci che mi anno sostenuto con ii loro aiuto e incoraggiamento, non dimenticando in particolare l'opera altamente apprezzata del Comitato Femminile.

Cosi' si e' conclusa la gestione del Comitato 1974-75: un anno che ha dato soddisfazioni generali, un anno in cui i soci si son resi conto dei progressi compiuti in ogni settore d'attivita'. Dopo it primo periodo di assestamento, it Club si e' messo in marcia speditamente verso la conquista dei desiderati obiettivi.

Molti non immaginano neppure l'enorme lavoro svolto dal Comitato, tutto it tempo che ha dedicato al servizio del Club, la delicate responsabilita' che si e' assunto. E' doveroso ricordare anche la collaborazione pratica dataci dai Soci con la loro attiva ed entusiastica frequenza.

Le attivita' sportive sono state di importanza vitale per distinguere it nostro Club e dargli sempre maggior prestigio, per mantenere alto it numero delle presenze e richiamare sul nostro dinamico sodalizio l'interesse generale di italiani ed australiani. A tutti coloro che operano nel settore sportivo del Veneto Social Club, un sentito grazie per l'opera svolta ed un augurio di sempre piu' luminose affermazioni future.

Concludo rinnovando le plu' viva congratulazioni al Presidente ed al Comitato uscente a formulando un augurio di prospero avvenire ai loro successori.

La nuova leggenda d'oro dei veneti a Melbourne DI

NINO RANDAZZO

Nel 408 Le antiche leggende di Venezia narrano I Visigoti, con gli Unni alle calcagna, invadono it Veneto.

Le popolazioni fuggono dal'entroterra verso la laguna.

Gli abitanti di Padova, gia' ferventi cristiani, pregano e attendono un segno dal cielo. Stormi di piccioni, con una croce disegnata sulle plume della testa e I piccoli sospesi al becco, volano verso it mare. La gente li segue e si ferma dove essi si fermano, su un'isola lagunare un po' piu' alta delle altre: Rivo Alto (poi Rialto). E gli uccelli crociati si moltiplicheranno e rimarranno per sempre nel cuore di Venezia. Qui, a Rialto, riposo' In una notte di tempesta, dentro una capanna di pescatori, l'evangelista San Marco, in viaggio da Aquilela, che aveva cristianizzato, verso Alessandria, dove lo attendeva it martirio. E sogno' che un giorno le sue ossa avrebbero Passano quattro secoli riposato in quest'isola ospitale e intanto gli abitanti di Rialto si eleggono a patrono San Teodoro. Gente di fede fluttuante, II suo primo patrono era stato San Giacomo, onorato con la chiesa di San Giacometto, la piu' antica di Venezia... Nell'809 l'imperatore franco che ha cinto la corona ferrea d'Occidente, Carlomagno, manda II figlio Pipino con una flotta a conquistare Venezia. Cadono le prime isole lagunari, gli abitanti di Malamocco si danno alla fuga. II doge Angelo Participazio invia la propria bellissima figlia Estella a pariamentare con Pipino. L'eroica seduttrice convince gli invasori a spostare le navi verso una trappola di Tango e d'acqua durante l'alta marea. Al riflusso del mare le navi dalle profonde carene restano arenate e I veneziani,

con barche dal fondo piano, le assaltano e le incendiano.

Pipino si salva con la fuga, ma muore appena un anno dopo per it dolore dell'umillante sconfitta e col ricordo lancinante di una notte d'amore in laguna. II doge Participazio e' convinto che Malamoco e' troppo esposta alle invasion' ed alle scorrerie ed incita pertanto, con scars' risultati iniziali, la popolazione a trasferirsi nel piu' sicuro cuore della laguna, a Rialto. Raccoglie e propaga II sogno di San Marco che I rialtesi s'erano tramandati per sette secoli di padre in figlio. Intanto due mercanti, Rustico di Torcello e Tribuno di Malamocco, sbarcano dal proprio veliero ad Alessandria ed acquistano le ossa di San Marco in quella citta' custodite. Ma la cittadinanza musulmana e' in rivolta. Come raggiungere it porto e salpare in fretta ? Le preziose reliquie vengono nascoste sul fondo di un cesto colmo di came di maiale, alla cut vista i musulmani fuggono inorriditi. Le ossa dell'evangelista arrivano a Rialto. Sorgono la basilica, I palazzl, I casolari, tra I fitti voll ed i fecondi amori dei piccionl crociati. E' qui it cuore di Venezia. La popolazione abbandona anche San Teodoro per II nuovo e definitivo patrono San Marco ...

Mille e centosessanta anni piu' tardl nasce anche la leggenda aurea del veneti di Melbourne. E' stata raccolta e messa insleme da bran' di racconti personal', da voci e indicazioni vaghe. Ricucendo I brandelll di notizie 51 ottiene un quadro, Incerto ma fascinoso, di come nacque e comincio' a prosperare la sede del "Veneto Social Club" nella capitale del Victoria, sulla riva del

flume Yarra che d'estate ha gll azzurognoll riflessi della lontana laguna e d'inverno talvolta gioca a rompere gll argini per creare una provvisoria palude di Comacchio.

Nottetempo, dall'entroterra melbourniano c'e' chl vede l'imponente profilo del circolo veneto come II Bucintoro illuminato d'un redivivo doge, e c'e' ancora chi 'vl scorge I riflessi d'oro del leone di San Marco, chi le vanescenti linee del vicentino Palladio, chi la ieratica immagine del Santo dl Padova, chl un dente del monti bellunesi dell'Alpago e del Cavallo, chi it mediovaie portico del trevisano Palazzo dei Trecento, chi una porta delle mura cipenti it pentagono di Rovigo.

Ma c'e' anche chi intravede, fra le brume lambite da un'onda di luce all'altezza del cornicione piu alto, II volto irsuto e sornione di un vecchio, pla'cido fantasma che spia attraverso i vetri appannati delle finestre la calda e vitale felicita' dell'interno e poi, soddisfatto e annuendo come per dire " Ben, benon, cosi' va ben l", scivola di nuovo nella caligine fra gli alberi e fl flume. E' un benigno genio tutelare, sebbene talvolta testardo e colleroso, e' it risultato di un Incrocio fra l'antichissimo e fiero spirito totemico dela scomparsa tribu' aborigena locale "Jika-Jika" e un prepotente spirito trasmigrato dal Mediterraneo, esattamente dall'alto Adriatico. Tuttavia sembra che un vecchlo, dagli approssimativi connotati del notturno visitatore del "Veneto Club", sia stato veramente visto da queste parti. C'e' chi giura d'avergli parlato, c'e' chi ne avrebbe subito In svariate forme la forza persuasive. I segretl sussurrati fra it compatimento degli Incredull smaliziati e l'emozione delle anime semplici e poetiche starebbero ad indicare una reale esistenza, in came ad ossa, in tempi recenti.

Quando a cavallo degli anni sessanta e settanta del ventesimo secolo dell'era cristiana, rimo secolo dell'era nucleare, I veneti di Melbourne, dopo un decennale travaglIo organizzativo, misero gli occhi su quel tratto di terra piana e basso a Bulleen in rive al flume, dovettero ingagglare una strenua Potts con le autorita' governative e comunali a con i propriety' ed utenti di aree limitrofe. Erano In molti a protestare contro la presunta "dissacrazione" di un luogo pubblico, contro le bocce e contro la polenta, perche' s'era sparsa la voce che le boce cozzanti ('una contro I'altra sollevassero un infernale fragore di cascata e che con la polenta i veneti fossero soliti cucinare anche gli opossum e gli uccellini della protetta fauna australiana.

Quel che if pubblico non vide, ne' poteva vedere, col propri occhi, ma che nondimeno avvenne e si puo' facilmente dedurre da susseguentl eventi e rivelazioni, fu 1'altrettanto furiosa battaglia che nel cielo prospiciente alio Yarra lo spirito totemico "Jika-Jika" condusse contro l'intruso spirito mediterraneo. Come per lo scontro fra angeli fedeli e ribelli nei siderei spazi dell'eternita' biblica, nessun occhio umano vide ne' mente umana sapra' ma! i dettagli del confronto. Se ne conosce invece lo straordinario risultato: non una vittoria dellbno sull'altro, non la scomparsa di uno e it trionfo dell'altro, bensi' una specie di conciliazione conclusiva, un verdetto di parita' come fra due pugili, una simbiosi scaturita dalla tusiore di due spiriti rival!, un unico spirito del luogo con la somma di poteri e caratteristiche dei due precedent!.

Pressapoco nello stesso periodo di questa celeste fusione, comparve a Bulleen it misterioso vecchio. Lo incontrarono per primi ii presidente e un consigliere del comitato direttivo del sodalizlo veneto, mentre awiliti e rabbuiati passeggiavano, una sera all'inbrunire, su una striscia di territorio conteso. Discutevano dell'ostilita' sempre piu' sorda nel confronti della progettata costru-

zione del club. II vecchio sbuco' come d'incanto da una macchia d'acacia e quasi impauri' I due solltari passeggiatorl, per quanto questi fossero solidi di corporatura e saidi di nervi come le moli di cemento armato che erano abituati a costruire in tutta Australia.

"Non state piu' a preoccuparvi — esclamo' fl vecchio In risonante dialetto veneto — Tutto s'aggiustera' presto.

Pero' nessuno si tits indietro, tutti i veneti ci mettano anima e corpo nel costruire it club. Ed ore it segreto: dite ai malati di cambiare idea se vogliono guarire".

E s'allontano' con una risatina soffocata, scomparendo In direzione del flume. Non appena i due compagni si ripresero della sorpresa, Si dissero a vicenda: "E' matto ! E chi ce lo porta qua?"

Un paio di settimane piu' tardi, un sindaco, un dews tato, cinque consiglieri comunali, due ingegneri del demanio — tutti australiani e tutti impegnati in unit piano d'opposizione al club veneto — si misero contemporaneamente a letto con un misterioso febbrone, capogiri e vomito che nessun medico riusciva a curare. Si parlava di un nuovo virus, ancora da isolare. I due dirigenti venetl si ricordarono della sibillina raccomandazione del "vecchio matto": "Dite ai malati di cambiare idea se vogliono guarire". E cosi' fu. I malati, chi prima e chi dopo, cambiarono idea e guarirono. Svanirono le proteste, caddero gli ostacoli burocratici, arrivarono tuttl i permessi per la costruzione della sede del circolo veneto.

Fatti inspiegabili avvennero anche tra I veneti piu' restii a collaborare: superfici di cemento gettate di fresco che si spaccavano, tetti e muri di costruzioni che cedevano, betoniere trovate capovolte al mattino, motori attrezzi che non funzionavano piu', affari che andavano alla malora, imprese in rovina. E i due si ricordarono dell'altro avviso del "vecchio matto": "Nessuno si tits lndietro", e fecero efficace opera di persuasione presso gli interessati. Le Imprese sull'orlo del fallimento rifiorirono non appena i titolari iniziarono una piu' impegnativa e sostanziosa collaborazione per la costruzione del "Veneto Social Club".

II "vecchio matto" comparve ancora ad una coppia di innamorati che un giorno facevano ('amore protetti da un cespuglio in rive allo Yarra, mentre i loro genitori lavoravano vicino alla costruzione della sede del circolo a Bulleen. Si dice che sia stato insieme brusco e comprensivo, Imperioso e sfottente, quando disse ai due: "Nascera' fra nove mesi, precisamente II giorno della inaugurazione del 'Veneto Social Club', e lo chiamerete Giacomo". I due, piu' che compunti, erano impressionati della visione e dispostl ad acettare it categorico ordine.

Qualche mese dopo avevano sistemato la faccenda sentimentale e carnale con una cerimonia in chiesa e una cena danzante con cinquecento invitati.

Nel cielo. a specchio dello Yarra sl scateno' un'altra battaglia. Lo spirito del luogo si sdoppio'. Quello mediterraneo sopraffece definitivamente l'aborigeno, cosi' come a Venezia San Teodoro aveva vinto su San Giacomo e poi San Marco su San Teodoro.

Tra la folla, it giorno dell'inaugurazione del "Veneto Social Club", si fece strada un vecchio che nessuno conosceva. si avvicino' prima ad uno e poi ad un altro degli astanti che ascoltavano i discorsi ufficiali, li tiro' per la manica e bisbiglio' in un orecchio: "E' maschio !" I due nuovi nonni sl affrettarono a raggiungere una clinica df Melbourne-centro e non riuscirono mai a capire quel che avvenne in seguito. Mamma e papa', tre mesi dopo la nascita, prenotarono due posti e una culla su un aereo e andarono a battezzare it piccolo a Venezia, per l'appunto nella chiesa di San Giacometto. Gli imposero i nomi di Giacomo Teodoro Marco, in quest'ordine. Ma gli australiani insistono a chlamarlo Jim.

TREASURER'S REPORT

It is with pleasure that I report to you on the financial results of the Club's activities for the year ended on the 30th April, 1974. The Club recorded an overall surplus of 92,964.28, after covering interest totalling $41,034.09 and allowing for depreciation amounting to $11,640.16.

Included in the interest figure is an amount of $7,276.05 representing interest applicable to the period prior to 30/4/1974, so that. the actual 1974/75 surplus would have been in excess of $100,000. Total Trading Income reached$412,631, an average of $7,935 per week, indicating an average weekly expenditure by each member of $7.22. Surplus on Trading however reached only $20,439.87, because of the large amount of interest payable and the extensive operating costs for a Club of this size. Membership Fees and donations received from the Ladies Auxiliary, the Recreation Sub-Committee, the Youth Club and the Italian Government form the larger part of the Club's surplus. To all those involved, and in particular to the Ladies Auxiliary I extend my personal "thank-you" for your valued contributions. I thank also all the members for their loyal patronage and

AUDITOR'S REPORT TO THE MEMBERS OF VENETO SOCIAL CLUB (A Company Limited by Guarantee)

TO THE MEMBERS: I report that I have examined the acounting books and records of the Veneto Socal Club in respect of the year ended 30th April, 1975.

The Club has not provided for depreciation of the buildings included in the Balance Sheet and referred to the note to that statement nor has it allocated any part of the cost of the building against income in arriving at the Net Surplus for the year.

Subject to this departure from the recommendations of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia, I report that the attached Statement of Income and Expenditure and Balance Sheet have been drawn up so as to give a true and fair view of the results of the Club's activities for the year ended 30th April, 1975, and the state of its affairs as at that date.

I further report that, in my opinion, the accounting and other records (including registers) examined by me are properly kept in accordance with the provisions of the Companies Act 1961.

The 1974/75 year has been a critical one financially, and through your efforts, your time given to the Club, your attendances at functions, your use of the Club's facilities, your faith in the Veneto Club, it has also been a very successful year. This has enabled the Club to incur $91,486 on further Capital Expenditure during the year and to also reduce Building Creditors outstanding at the 30/ 4 / 1974 by $52,509, and this was achieved by borrowing only $30,662 in additional outside funds. Loans from Members, through Debentures, Special and Foundation Loans increased by $23,636. To those Members who have made these loans available I also offer my personal "thank-you". Due to the $92,964 Surplus, Accumulated Funds during the year increased from $134,388 to $227,352, an increase of just under 70% — a result in which all members can draw great pride.

Finally, I wish also to thank the Club's administrative staff for their excellent work over the past twelve months, and for their constant loyalty to the Club. I trust that all members will continue to support the Club over the next financial year as they have done over the year just ended. The financial success of the Club is a reality only if the Club receives the support of its Members.

L'anno sociale appena conclusosi ci ha portato una nuova messe di successi, specialmente per merito del nostro bravo Guerino Favrin che si e' piazzato campione d'Australia del singolo nelle gare svoltesi a Perth. I nostri bravi giocatori si sono anche distinti vincendo le gare di singolo e doppio del campionato del Victoria.

Nella' classifica del campionato d'Australia vediamo ancora una volta tre giocatori del Veneto Social Club che quasi sicuramente faranno parte della squadra che andra' a Brisbane.

Un grazie di cuore vada al segretario del nostro Sottocomitato, Angelo Bolzonello, it quale si e' disimpegnato brillantemente con la collaborazione di tutti gli altri colleghi per l'organizzazione delle gare interstatali. Nel settembre del 1974 la squadra di Bocce del Veneto si e' recata a Griffith, dove nonostante la sconfitta subita abbiamo avuto simpatici incontri di solidarieta' sportive.

A gennaio di quest'anno un po' di fortuna ha aiutato la nostra squadra a conquistare la "Coppa dell'amicizia" ad Adelaide, dove ci siamo incontrati con i Bocciofili veneti di quella citta'. Nello scorso aprile, poi, abbiamo ospitato a Melbourne la rappresentativa del "Club Marconi" di Sydney.

Rinnovo it mio sentito ringraziamento a ciascun membro del Sottocomitato e a tutti coloro che hanno collaborato lealmente a tenere alto it livello di gioco ed ii prestigio della nostra attivita' boccistica.

THE LADIES' AUXILIARY, V. S. C. 1974/75 The Year 1975, was a very successful one for the Ladies' Auxiliary of te Veneto Social Club.

Our functions included Dinner Dances, Luncheons once a month in the Venezia Room, with the pleasure of having Miss Gina Lollobrigida as oUr Guest .ef Honor in March, and raising funds for the Spastic Children's Society in collaboration with the "Miss Veneto Quest".

We help prepare tables the night before Dinner Dances, and are always ready to help at picnics and whenever needed.

Also, every Sunday night a Smorgasbord is held in the San Marco room at which we, together with other Voluntary women workers, whom we wish to thank very much for their help, serve the members with appetizing meals.

YOUTH CLUB REPORT Over the past year the "Veneto Youth Club" has entrenched itself as a living part of the "Veneto Social Club" by continuing to provide functions for the 15-25 years age group — sons and doughters of the senior Club members.

These functions varied from frequent dances, which have been very popular, to a "chicken and champagne breakfast" on the banks of the Yarra. Other highlights of our program were: our annual Snow, Beach and Horse Riding picnics; a Spring Sports Carnival among the Italian Clubs of Melbourne; and finally our own "little Sunbury", the Autumn rock concert. All functions provided lots of entertainment for those who attended.

Our task has not been an easy one. Catering for the needs of the younger generations presents its probems in any case. For the younger set of te Veneto Social Club it has taken time, trial, error and understanding to finally find a formula that works for the majority of the group.

To all those parents who have encouraged their children to be actively involved in the youth section I would like to say, as "old Gough" would say: "WELL DONE !". And naturally, we hope at eventually all parents will take an interest in ensuring that their children become parte of this youth section.

This year the Veneto. Youth Club will be celebrating its 5th anniversary: a real mark of achievement for us all to share. Because of this fact, many of the original members of the V.Y.C. who have in the past kept this club of ours running, will be moving on from active duty. This means that new blood is needed to take on the responsibility of organizing all the varied activities of this Club. I am sure that the upcoming members will courageously carry out this task and keep the spirit of the Youth Club alive for many.

Finally, I would like to extend my personal thanks to all those fellow committee-members for their co-operation and work over the past 12 months. I hope that all future committees will continue to work on with the same zeal and determination to make the Veneto Youth Club, a club that people will always be proud to be associated with.
