PRESIDENT'S REPORT
Dear Members Another Christmas season is upon us. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all managers, staff, committees of various sport and social activities and my main committees who have contributed to the day-to-day activities of the club, and wish everybody a merry Christmas and a happy and safe new year. The last 6 months have been the most challenging and eventful since I was elected to the position of President and how many times have you found yourself so close to something, maybe so absorbed in your work, that you simply can't see the wood for the trees? Like being centimetres from a painting where all you can see is the detail, and the subject is lost entirely, but all you have to do is take a few steps back, and suddenly the colours and shapes make sense. We describe this process of taking in the whole picture in many ways: we say things like we're "taking stock", or "taking a step back", or "getting things in perspective". I'm sure the best of us forget, all too often, to take that important step back, to look at what we do from the benefit of a bit of distance. So what's our future? Will those who follow us, still be gathering at the Club and enjoying the times there as our parents have, in twenty or thirty years time? Are Clubs ultimately doomed to go the way of the other Clubs in Victoria and NSW or will we be forced to face the realisation at some time in the future that the reason for our being has passed? I'm sure other Clubs are having similar thoughts. In this period of taking stock, and reflecting on our imperatives, I have become increasingly convinced that we can no longer rely on the things we have traditionally done if we wish to survive. I am increasingly convinced that Clubs must provide new and creative value propositions for their members if they are going to survive. Thus, we have, on our Committee, taken a number of first steps into wholly unfamiliar territory in an effort to create new and stronger value propositions for members. We are now looking outside our Club domain to create new alliances with Tattersalls and CUB and
Clubs Victoria to help us meet new challenges to enable us to move forward. Members will be advised in the near future on the work done in this area and also around selected key activities, soccer and basketball etc. Also we are now 'breaking the mould'; breaking out if you like, more focus on what the customer wants delivered in quality food, service and customer satisfaction as well supporting our traditional values and activities of the Club in a balanced way - we're doing it because we're convinced we have to. We are developing products and services that are straight 'bottom line' offerings to customer, yes I said customer, but also members in the understanding the Club need to at the leas.t pay it's own way into the future. I.believe this clarity of focus and taking stock are producing significant outcomes for members. We have a long way to go on these issues. We know we are-on a hard road, and we know it is going to get harder, but that's just the way it is. We won't allow ourselves to be discouraged or deterred. I'm reminded ofa quote: "The glory that was Rome went down into the history books in shame when that empire fell infamously, but the fall was the obvious end result of letting so many things slip individually, these were no big deal, but in the multitude of came ruin" Breaking the mould and getting out into unfamiliar territory is usually uncomfortable, and chances are you'll get some things wrong. But let me say this that the last month there has been significant progress and there seem to be a some light at the end of the tunnel I believe the light can and will only get brighter. Thanks to my committee for support and help in dealing with some rather difficult issues.

First Vic-e President's Report Dear Members It has come to the end of another year where Christmas is approaching and I would like to comment on the functions that our younger group the "Young Adults" have held in the past year. In April, of this year we held a Gala Evening with "Patrick McMahon" and his band as the entertainment. The night was a great success and the Sala San Marco was filled to capacity, all our guests enjoyed a great night. In July of this year, we coriunenced a band night in the Rialto Bar on the first Saturday of each month featuring popular cover bands. The response to each of those night have been encouragmg. The Veneto Club will continue to hold these evenings in 2005 , re-commencing on the first Saturday in March. There is no cover charge and everyone is welcome to attend. A reminder that the bistro is open for dinner from 6.00pm. (Please do not forget to make a booking). The year has been a success and enjoyed by all, so ensure you come along for a great night out. We also plan to hold another Young Adults Gala Evening in 2005, (stay tuned).

In the meantime I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. A final message, a congratulations to Daniel Morton our Gymnasium Manager who was recently married. Our best wishes to both Daniel and Belinda. Vice-President's Report
O
n being appointed Vice-President in June 2004, the opportunity arose to meet with, and listen to, people important to the Veneto Club. This included customers, employees and our members. Clear strategic priorities consistent with the expectations of these people reaffirmed my belief in, and commitment to, our mission and purpose:
o
to be a leading premium Club that provides an environment that fulfils all visitors,
o
provide a workplace that is enjoyable and motivating for employees by providing them with a sense of achievement and contribution; and

establish a Centre for all Australians, in particular those of Italian heritage, to enhance and maintain our cultural values. The success of any business depends on the quality and commitment of its people, and that is particularly the case at the Veneto Club, where the interaction between customers and our people is so important. By identifying our objectives explicitly, it helps to show people the sort of organisation the Club is and aims to stay! The staff are to be complemented on striving to achieve the best over the last six months. I very much look forward to continuing to work with the management team and staff who are committed to doing the best possible for the Club. I have no doubt their commitment willJbe rewarded with the consistent improvement over future years. The next six months will be a very exciting time for us all, with a range of initiatives taking place to improve our financial performance, innovative ideas and enhancing benefits to our members. With sound strategies and the right management team in place, the Directors anticipate your support in implementing recommendations to carry the Club forward in the future and make it the best Club in the Southern Hemisphere! Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Senior Management, staff members, the individual Sporting Clubs, Associations, Maintenance Committee and the Ladies' Auxiliary for their hard work and support over the past six months. Great improvements have been made and the current year should present even more exciting opportunities. Thanks also to my fellow Directors for their help and guidance, and of course to you 'The Members' for your ongoing support. I extend to you and your families my very best of wishes for a Merry Christmas, keep safe and let us make 2005 a year of peace and thoughts for people less fortunate than ourselves!

Treasurer's Report Dear Members During the past few years, the Club has been generating losses, and unfortunately it is still the case half way through our current financial year. Substantial savings have been made by your Committee in reducing and containing costs. This has had some effect towards reducing loss but our revenue base has been falling and needs critical attention. In summary, the first six months of the financial year show.
Frank Rossato
• • • •
Overall Sales are down 9% on the previous year Cost savings gained are favourable by 12% Gaming profit is up 10% The six months trading loss is 33% less than last year's loss The situation as it currently presents itself is unacceptable and we cannot continue to trade in this manner any longer. So, where do we go to from here? Your Committee has taken steps to formulate a strategic plan to lead the Club into the future. The plan will incorporate all operations of the Club and will involve intensive consultation with the club industry. We need to refresh and revitalise the Club and its facilities to attract the additional turnover needed to create a bottom line acceptable to our Members. Obviously, major items needing redirection include food, service, location of food facilities, facilities in general, liaison with sub committees and liaison with our sporting bodies. Upon completion the strategic plan will be presented to Members for approval and implementation. Finally, it would be remiss of me not to mention the tireless efforts and contributions of Members. The Ladies Auxiliary and Maintenance Team immediately come to mind. So much is owed by so many to so few. Not to be forgotten, our staff for their efforts and in many cases their voluntary time. Wishing you merry Christmas and safe and happy New Year. Frank Rossato Treasurer

• • •

The last six months have 'again been very busy. Our major fundraiser the "Taste of Venice" Gala Dinner Dance for the Lions House Foundation was held Friday 1st October and thanks to the generosity of our supporters we raised a grand total of $14,250 to establish an accommodation home for families of seriovsly ill patients from country and interstate areas who would otherwise be away from their loved ones. The facility will be built on the old Repatriation Hospital site and service the new Mercy Hospital for Women and the Austin Health (Austin & Repatriation Medical Centre). Thank you all for your generosity and to the people ofthe Lions House Foundation thanks for your help and continue the good work: This year we decided to hold "Oaks Day at the Veneto Club". BULLEEN ZEBRAS SENIOR SOCCER AT THE VENETO CLUB
S
eason 2004 commenced with major changes onJoffthe field. The new board appointed Hall of Fame inductee Peter Ollerton, as Senior Coach, and the Club 1998 Flag Winning Captain, Zebra Legend, Eric Hollingsworth as his assistant. The Bulleen Zebras, under its new management team commenced the difficult tasks in rebuilding the soccer club into a major force in season 2004 and beyond. The Club released long serving players Danny Gnjidic, Sava Rusmir, Berkan Sakaci, Joseph Damiano and Joe Di Iorio, who had served the Club with great distinction, and the Zebras wish them well in their future playing careers, as well as, Simon Vescio, Glen Clarke, Xhezair Sulemani, Tas Psonis and Ari Vlahos. The 2004 season got underway in February 2004 with the following players as its senior squad: Michael Mazzini (Captain) Robert Santilli Stelios Drakos Dean Tartaglia Dennis Vucinic Peter Kakos Steve Martin Damien Guglielmi Josip Kozic RyanOllerton Ari Drakos
Marino Gasparis Ben Harbinson Marco Santilli Matthew De Angelis Ross Antoniadis David Petkovski Michael Theoklitos Blagoja Celeski Costa Tiouskis
As the newly appointed president and as the club enters into its eight year of merger, the Bullen Zebras, are committed in its partnership with the Veneto Club, to bring back the glory of the 1997 and 1998 seasons. It was a fantastic year this year. The kids were all outstanding and we should all be proud of them. Don't worry about the Fawkner cup; it's like winning the Wizard cup in the AFL. It's good to win it as a bonus but we all know who the best team was throughout the season and this tournament. Well done everyone and special thanks to Jimmy, Lou and of course Rick (whenever he was around). There are a few photos of the kids at the Fawkner cup. Regards

fter a short break from the Committee I find myself back in the Bocce Committee once again. Finding enough time to devote to Vendo Club Bocce Bowls is challenging, week to week, and my apologies to the Bocce Players for this. We must thank Dominic Alberti for accepting the role as President for this season. He has managed to tackle some of the harder issues that the Bocce Committee has had difficulty in dealing with in the past. Seeing new faces on the Committee certainly is a step in the right direction and we can only hope that Bocce at the Veneto Club get stronger because of this. Early in the season organizing the Griffith trip proved difficult. A change of Committee, available dates, and other events meant that getting a decent number was impossible. Faced with breaking the tradition we decided to program the trip even with only

Peter Badocco and the Yoogali Club treated all of us as one of their own and we look forward to seeing them back at our club in 2005. Saturday morning, twice a month I coach a group of persons with disabilities. On the Sunday 19th November, 2 teams of 4, challenged this group in a round robin competition. Not being able to win a game, all the participants were grateful for the opportunity to challenge the pros at Bocce. This renewed their enthusiasm through their training, and look forward to next years challenge match. Competitions to watch out for the New Year and the remainder of this year: Tatura Vs Veneto (Bocce) early next year in Tatura, Veneto vs. Mourit Gambier (Raffa) January, Marconi Vs Veneto (Bocce - Jan/Feb 05) in Sydney. Tennis 2004 State Grade Pennant Winners Michael Logarzo, Angelo Giampaolo, Kane Dewhurst & Taso Vasiliadis
Hello Tennis Lovers, We have some great news to report. Our State Grade Pennant Team was successful in winning the flag in their first year in the competition. The final was played on a cold and miserable Sunday afternoon in Augu~t. Our side got off to a very bad start. They lost the first three rubbers and it looked like the fat lady was about to sing; but before she could do so, the sky opened up and play had to be postponed until the following week. I'm not sure what happened during that week but the following Sunday our team was on fire. They won the next three ~bbers and the match was decided on sets and we won by just one set. Congratulations to the winning team members: Taso Vasiliadis Michael Logarzo Kane Dewhurst Angelo Giampaolo This is truly a great honor and lifts the reputation and status of the Veneto Tennis Club to be amongst the most prestigious clubs in Victoria. However, if we are to maintain that standard it requires many hours of hard work and dedication by the committee and by the players. It also requires a lot of money, and so I would like to encourage any potential sponsors to come forward and contact Paul Bisiani, or myself, to discuss it further.
Juniors Report In the Autumn season we had 5 junior teams, 3 boys and 2 girls, competing. The boy's Section 11 and Section 28 both made the finals and Section 11 brought
home the flag. Well done and keep up the good work. In the Spring season we had fifteen new junior players join the club. This allowed us to enter 7 teams (2 girls and 5 boys) in the current season. Most teams are in the top four and should go on to compete in the finals and hopefully bring home a few flags . Its great to see the junior ranks growing, as this will determine the future of the club. To encourage them to keep playing for our club, the adults should lead by example and show them equal rights and respect, both on and off the courts. Thank you once again to Pablo, the team managers and all the parents for supporting the competition and helping out when needed. Without their help the competition would not survive. So parents, if you can help in any way, please offer your services.
Ladies Tennis Report Three teams played in the Autumn 2004 Wednesday night competition. Section 4, consisting of Lisa Ciuffetelli, Jackie Ciuffetelli, Laura Lanzon and Gabriella Lanzon and Section 11 , consisting of Diana Tominc, Gianna Trovato, Leanne Dedda, Julie Di Pietro and Elena McCrone both won their grand final. Well-done ladies, and I hope you can go from strength to strength. Congratulations also to the ladies in Section 5 of the H.D.T.A. Tuesday competition for winning the flag in the The winning team with Tony Trovato, Fury Bortolotto and Paul Bisiani

Autumn season. Lets hope they can win back to back. Unfortunately the two ladies' teams in the H.D.T.A. Thursday competition were not so successful in the Autumn season but Section 6 is currently on top of the ladder this season. Keep playing great tennis and bring home the flag. Thanks once again to Alma Zanatta for organizing the ladies' day tennis.
Men's Tuesday Night Competition In the Autumn 2004 season we entered 11 teams, 6 of which were in the Veterans Competition. In the Men's Open, Section 12 won the grand final but unfortunately Section 8 made the grand final but lost it. In the Veterans we had six teams reaching the finals and two teams, Section 1 and Section 2 (team 2), won the flags. Well-done boys. . In the current Spring season we have ten teams participating and at this stage it would seem like about half should make the finals. Belli and Brutti Competition Unfortunately the traditional Belli and Brutti handicap competition was cancelled due to lack of numbers. This was probably due to a very cold and wet Autumn and the fact that the average tennis player is getting older and therefore feels the cold more. We may have to hold this competition only once a year, at the end of the Spring season. I would appreciate feed back from all the members on their thoughts on this subject. Annual Tennis Dinner Dance I was very disappointed with the poor attendance at this year's Annual Tennis Dinner Dance. There were only 52 attendees of which less than half were tennis players. What happened to all the other tennis members? It would seem that apathy has set in and the majority are happy to reap the benefits of the hard work of the committee but cannot be bothered to even come along to support them at a social function. Lets hope this attitude changes for the sake of our great Tennis Club.
The Winning Team with some of their sponsors - Crema Camillo and WOW Travel
Avid State Grade Tennis Supporters Gianna Trovato, Daniella Crema and Raelene Di Felice
Despite the lack of numbers, every one that came along had a great night, thanks to the organisational skills of Gianna Trovato, Elena McCrone and Romeo Crema.
Annual General Meeting The A.G.M. was held on 7 June 2004. Once again the apathy of the tennis members was evident by only 20-25 people attending. Mario Basso complimented the court maintenance staff for doing a terrific job. The State Grade Pennant Team was discussed and every one agreed that it was great for the club and that we should do everything in our power to support them. Elena McCrone officially announced her retirement from the committee and she was sincerely thanked for all the time and effort that she put into the junior competition for the past six years. The remainder of the committee was re-elected unopposed. It's a pity that more members do not attend the AGM, so that they can voice their opinions on the future directions of their club. Finally, I would like to thank Romeo Crema, Val Di Felice, Paul Bisiani and Alma Zanatta for all their hard work on the committee and personal support during the year. I would also like to take this opportunity to wish every one, a very safe and merry Christmas, and happy New Year. Tony Trovato President of the Tennis Sub Committee

Quasi 300 soci e amici
presero parte alIa festa.

Cooper's Creek Gippsland The Trevisani, by Diana Ruzzene Grollo This book is an historical! sociological account of Cooper's Creek Gippsland and its Italian community. In the first few chapters the author gives a general history of the area and its natural resources. In the remaining chapters, which are the bulk of her research, she concentrates on the years between 1930 and 1950. The research demonstrates the hardship of the mostly Italian Trevisani men's work in the lime quarry, kilns and wood..:cutting, at the White Rock Lime Company. In the period of the Economic Depression the men gravitated to find work in this harsh environment so that a cluster of Italian -Trevisani- men, developed. The author brings to the foreground this group of Trevisani migrants and describes their daily life of work, the comradeship, the alienation, the subsequent arrival of their families, the practice of their culture and the fear Whilst, at during the war years. present there is little evidence of the Cooper's Creek and the Jubilee townships, the author brings to life the bustling towns and its people who lived there in that period. The book is well illustrated with many beautiful photographs, which are reproduced in sepia to give the character of those times and create a work of art. Effectively, there are two books. One is the written text and the other is a type of photograph album. These are intertwined to recreate the stories of the many people who. lived and worked at the White Rock Lime Company, in Cooper's Creek and Jubilee, Gippsland Victoria.
The Book consisting of 250 pages will also be available in Italian in 2005 and can be purchased from: GRO-SET Pty Ltd Ms Trish Iezzi or Livio Belia 344 Mansfield Street Thornbury Vic 3071 Australia Telephone: (03) 8480 0400 Web: www.growingthroughthebrickfloor.com.au L 'ECO DEL VENETO - Dicembre '04 - p.51
