Giancarlo Peruzzo Presidente

Presidente 's Report I have been carrying out my duties as President of the Club for only a few months and I am realising the difficulties involved in my appointment. Our Club has become a large and complex organisation to coordinate and direct. It requires a considerable amount of energetic resources and firm decision making. However, amongst the people who hold important duties in the governing committee, there exist a good collegial understanding and sincere willingness to cooperate. With these factors, which constitute the principal basis for success, we will be able to build up again the reputation of our organisation and ensure that it is amongst the most reputable in our field. There are still many important things that can be done in our Club and we should not sit back and just enjoy the benefits of past labour as, it would seem, it has been done by the recent management. I would like to take this opportunity to above all

L'ECO DEL VENETO- Dicembre 2001- Page 05

thank the members of my commitee, the manager of the Club Mario Angeluccci for the important work that he undertakes with dedication and professionalism. The members of the "Ladies Auxiliary" Committee deserve sincere and grateful thanks for their untiring and precious collaboration. Together with these ladies I would like to acknowledge all those dedicated people who make themselves available and participate in our organisation in every possible way and make the social life of the Club always more pleasant and interesting. Amongst these people are all the members who constantly attend the club's social, cultural and sporting activities. With the intent to direct our Club towards ever more ambitious enterprises, I would like to cordially wish all the members greetings for the Festive Season and a wonderful future for our Club. Report As we come to the end of the first year in the new millennium, I can truly say it has been very gratifying to work with a united and dedicated committee. I know that the members are very much aware of the problem which existed at the beginning of this committee's term of office, but I can assure you that one by one these are being addressed. Obviously, in some areas we have been able to achieve quick results whereas in some others it is a much slower process and will take time to turn certain situations around. It must be certainly felt by the atmosphere which prevails at present in our Club, that the committee is not only working hard, but that we also enjoy our work. The latter perhaps is just as important, for the only compensation one has when he or she works voluntarily is the satisfaction in knowing that at the end of the day you have achieved something worthwhile, and your committee, under the professional excellence, strong and untiring leadership our President John Peruzzo is doing just that. I would like to inform the members that at the present membership stand at: 393 Foundation, 16 Life, 858 Ordinary, 592 Associate, 4 7 Honorary, and gaming members, total3500 Welcome back to_our catering manager Mario Angelucci. Mario is what I call "Quiet Achiever", and already, I'm sure that his presence has been felt right across every department which he supervises. We have seen the gradual improvement in our restaurants, and I'm sure this will continue until he has achieved an excellent standard in quality food and service. On the administration side I welcome a new member, our Accountant Phillip McDonald. Phillip has an enormous wealth of knowledge, and slowly, new systems are being implemented which are time and cost efficient. At this point I would also like to thank the supporting staff, Tony Squilaciotti, Marina Mandoulidis, Florence Taufer and Mario Bonis. They are a great team who work far beyond the call of duty.

Ketti Pezzin

Another Person I work closely with is Anthony Canil, our gaming manager, and I thank Anthony and his team of dedicated workers for a job well done. To each and every member of staff thank you. We acknowledge your loyalty and look forward to a continued happy working relationship. To all the loyal members of the Veneto Club, Ladies Auxiliary, Sub Committees, Associations of the Veneto Region, Voluntary Workers, my President and Committee colleagues (and their partners who help us enormously behind the scenes) and last but not least my wonderful family who understand just how important my commitment is, go my sincere thanks. It would be very remiss of me not to remember our past president Alfonso Pozzebon who served this club and it's members as President, Vice President and committee person for many, many years. Thank you Alf for all you have done ..... enjoy your welldeserved retirement! I apologize if this has been a little lengthy, but has been quite some time since I have wanted, or felt that I was able to express my thoughts sincerely. I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very, very happy Christmas and a safe and prosperous 2002. Ketti Pezzin Honorary Secretary

Ketti Pezzin Segretaria Onoraria

BULLEEN

Bulleen Zebras Seniors Season 2001 The Seasons's beginning promised much in the way of anticipation. Last year's demise of Australian legendAlan Davidson's tenure, the appointment of Adelaide City championship player Joe Mullen and the subsequent recovery of the team to finish in a respectable position after a horror start. A fresh start was eagerly awaited.

Reserve players with their coach and team manager

A new Senior Board was appointed by the Members under the guidance of President George Mirabella. The Season 2001 Board consisted ofVice President's Rino Tessarotto and Ron Lammanda, with Board members being Pauline Macca, Joe Sala, Mario Marino, Peter Balassone, Pat Saladino, Alex Lorenzi, Egon Schille, Elio Ruffolo. On the park, Bulleen has assembled a group of experienced players and youthful debutantes. All bode well for our hopes of a title! The season began slowly, especially on the park; which although had plenty of attention was deemed by the VSF not fit to play on until round 9. Our team in the meanwhile was not coping to well with gathering points and as a result we languished near the bottom of the league table. Compounding this problem was the pressure being brought to bear on the Clubs finances. Minimal gate takings and no canteen takings meant financially tough times were at hand if not for the assistance of sponsors who brought forward their commitments; matters may well and truly have been dire! Thanks to the Veneto Club and his board and in particular to Mr Celio Stocco who is the liaison officer for Soccer.

PRESENTATION NIGHT From Left: G Damiano, W Spink, P De/la Rocca, D. Gnjidic, M. Mazzini, N. Thomas.

On returning to our home ground base, the team began a return to form that enables it to reach the finals in 3rd position. The finals saw us again fail to capitalize on our opportunities and eventually finished 3rd overall. On a positive, Bulleen youth policy again unearthed a quality player eagerly sought after by NSL clubs. This resulted in the sale of goalkeeper, Michael Theokilities to Auckland Kinzs. Season 2002 wish list includes a quality striker and midfielder as re-appointed coach Joe Mullen strives to take our team to new heights.

VENETOCLUB JUNIOR SOCCER REPORT Bulleen Lvon Juniors Season 2001 This year has been another successful season for all our junior teams. We fielded an under 17 girls team and they performed very well in the Southern/Eastern region. Our two Ulls were very competitive, with the Lions going through the season undefeated. The Lions also capped off a great season winning the Spring Championship. The U12 Lions fought long and hard and eventually booked a place in the 2002 Super League. Our U 12 Tigers battled through the season and ended a great season in fourth position. ]/(JWCfS j(Jf a/1

SQUASH CLUB SPRING PENNANT

SPRING SPORTS DAY

The Club, currently, has 5 teams competing in the VSRA Spring Pennant Competitions, and for the first time in many years, the Club has an A Grade Team.

The Sports Day provided very keen competition with round robin matches in both A and B divisions.

The No 1 Team, Captained by Anthony Bucello, was promoted to A-3 Grade after success in B Grade during the autumn season.

A division was won by Michael Sikos won a division with Anthony Carucci runner-up. It was great to see Michael back on the squash court after injury, and his performance argues well for next season.

With just two rounds left to play the team has an excellent chance of reaching the finals, but must win both matches to do so. A finals berth could also mean promotion to A 2 Grade in 2002. The club is hoping to regain the services of Marc Forte next season, in recent times Marc has been playing A-Grade for the Hawthorn Club and he would be a major acquisition to the Club. Marc's return would give the Club its best opportunity to reaching A 1 Grade.

B Division was taken out by Frank Chiodo with Ollie Guglielmi runner-up.

NEW PLAYERS WELCOME The club would welcome new players for pennant competition in 2002. The autumn season commences early February and runs for approximately 3 months. There is no better way to improve your squash than to play pennant. Ladies are also welcome to play in the club circuit and there are number of mixed teams competing. The club offers opportunities for all levels of squash players, from beginners to A-Grade. Our 2001 Annual Dinner Dance held in June in the Sala San Marco was a great event. The night was very special from the table decorations to the dance floor. Many thanks to Giana Trovato and her team for organizing such a memorable occasion. Particular thanks to our sponsors who donated many prizes which helped make the night a financial success: Prelli Racquets, Veneto Club, Oriano Giovanetti, Best Direction Clothing, Andrew's Menswear, Barro Builders' Supplies, Rizzo House of Linen, Janet Ireland Florist, Tony Vizzari, Bulleen Plaza Butcher, Pandora's Florist, and Phillip Price.

NENTG Mens SIB Winners Fabian Kennie, Jvo Rigoni, Steve Testa/in and Daniel !era

Unfortunately the attendance at our Annual General Meeting was very disappointing. We, the Committee, would appreciate our members attending this forum to help shape the future of our Club. The previous Committee was re-elected accepting the resignation of Vince Di Grazia. It is time some of our younger members took a more active role in the Club's affairs. We would welcome the input from all members and we encourage you to join our Committee to help in the running ofVeneto Club Tennis.

Our Club Room has had a facelift and, with many thanks to the Veneto¡Club, a window overlooking the soccer field, adding more light, will be installed completing the project. Once completed our Club Room will have a much more amenable atmosphere which can be enjoyed by all Tennis members. Once again the Winter 2001 Belli and Brutti Handicap held in June/July was a great success. With the help of many, the winter nights were overcome with warm fires and castagne. Many hands made our final night BBQ a great feast; thanks to all the blokes who helped, making sure our members had another carefree night of tennis 'at its most enjoyable.

Winter 2001 Belli Finalists Oriano Giovanetti, Mario Basso, , Jason Maroun, Robert Tombolato

The Belli winners, old veterans Mario Basso and Oriano Giovanetti, proved experience was invaluable to overcome the challenge from runners-up Jason Maroun and Robert Tombolato. The two Franks, Casciaro and Maiorino outmatched Stephen Testolin and Ivo Rigoni to take out the Brutti trophy. The formula for how this event should be run is often the topic of debate. Our current computer programme is obviously doing something right as the event is i members' favourite. If you have never played before come along and join in the fun. At the time of print our 2001 Club Championships are being held. This is our premier Tennis event each year. We have 15 events and it is a great chance to play singles/doubles competition tennis, meet other tennis members, watch some great tennis, and enjoy our Finals Day BBQ. It is not an event for elite or very good players. It is the Club Championships, which all members are encouraged to play in. Good luck to all participants.

I take this opportunity to thank our members who put in that extra effort to ensure our functions both on and off the courts run smoothly. To our sponsors, many thanks for your support and to our Liaison Officer Giancarlo Bassora who represents our Tennis Club on The Veneto Club Committee. My fellow Committee: Dino Bettiol, Jill Cappellin, Maurice Polini, Alma Zanatta, Elena McCrone and Phillip Price thank you for making life easier.

Bocce Report \

Six months ago Silvio Gatto assumed the role of Bocce President and things have been moving along smoothly. I wish him the best for the rest of the new season in his role. I was worried that we would loose players in the 2001-2002 BFV competition but all the players that played last year have signed up for the new season renewing my optimism for the sport. Add to that a new member and player for the Veneto Club Miro Kmcevic (a-west) and Monique Alberti (women's B). We hope all of the existing BFV players will welcome Miro and Monique tp our team and I hope they can find that the Veneti will look after these enthusiastic Bocce players. After all enthusiastic Bocce players are hard to find these days. Earlier this year the Bocce federation of Australia started the Active for life Pennant competition. Part of the conditions of entering a team was to include 4 women participants on competition day. Finding the four women who could play on a Saturday was looking like a lost cause in the first two weeks. This lead to the introduction of the Thursdays nights Beginners Night where two new keen Women Bocce players emerged and helped make the Inaugural Veneto Club Pennant Team a viable reality.

As the results have shown the Veneto Club did not do so well but everyone that played (see Photo) enjoyed the experience and are keen to see this competition succeed and continue. Conducting the Beginners night and teaching new players the sport has renewed my enthusiasm for the sport. Seeing these new players with only six weeks of tuition keen enough to join the competition and compete against seasoned professionals gives me great pleasure. The improvements in their skills and knowledge of the game in such a short time is proof that anyone can play the game and that there is a number of competitions that are available to members and it is never to late to learn Bocce. Thank you to all the participants of the Pennant competition and hope you found the experience rewarding. Season 2000-2001 came to a finale in our annual presentation night and the night was memorable on many fronts not the least, a chance for

Bocce Federation of Australia WORLD JUNIOR "UNDER 18" CHAMPIONSHIP LAVELANET- FRANCE, JULY 2001 Fourteen countries participated at this World Championship, they were Australia, Algeria, Argentina, Bulgaria, Chile, China, Croatia, France, Italy, Monaco, Paraguay, Slovenia, Switzerland and Yugoslavia. The five titles that were contested were the Singles, Doubles, Punto/Tiro, Progressive and Precision Throw. The Australian Team consisted of Santa Pascuzzi and Craig Ryan from. Victoria and Steven Bertollo from Griffith (NSW) and were accompanied by the Australian Delegate Tony Pegoraro- Secretary of the Bocce Federation of Australia. The Coach was Robert Mikuletic from New South Wales, himself a former World Junior representative, this was his first experience as Coach at an international event. Slovenia won the Doubles with Australia placed 1Oth, France won the Singles and Italy the Bowl/Throw with Australia the wooden spooners in both events, the Progressive Throw winner was Italy with Australia 7th and the Precision Throw was also won by Italy with Australia 6th . . Unfortunately the results achieved by Australia did not meet our expectations, but given that this was a young inexperienced team participating for the first time at World Championship, I am sure the experience will prove invaluable in the future. Also it is anticipated that in future a team will be chosen earlier and this should enable the Bocce Federation of Australia to implement a more satisfactory training schedule for chosen players. WORLD GAMES "UNDER 23" MENS THROWING AKITA, JAPAN AUGUST 2001 Australia competed for the first time at the World Games in Japan in August after having been asked by the Federation Internazionale De Boules to represent Bocce at this important sporting event in both the Precision Throw and Progressive Throw titles only. Robert Mikuletic from NSW and Ross Deieso from South Aust. competed at these World Games. They were accompanied by Ray Cher, President of the Bocce Federation of Australia.

WORLD SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP KRANJ, SLOVENIA- SEPTEMBER 2001 At these World Championships 26 countries participated. Five Titles were contested; they were the Singles, Doubles, Punto/Tiro, Progressive and Precision Throw. Australia's representatives were Walter Brecevic, Dino Mikolic and Anthony Parlato all from Victoria and Steven Chiandotto from New South Wales. Accompanying this team was the President of the Bocce Federation of Australia Ray Cher together with the National Coaching Director Tony Biancacci. Australia achieved excellent results at these World Titles. Australia was placed third in the Doubles event. In view of the fact that twenty six countries participated, this was an excellent effort. Congratulations to the team and coach on this great result. In the Singles Australia was placed seventeenth, in Bowl/Throw Australia was equal fifth with Italy, Yugoslavia and Croatia, in the Precision Throw and the Progressive Throw we attained 6th position.

Australia continues to make good progress and achieve results, hopefully, one day in the not too distant future we may even reach a final in this sport. PENNANT COMPETITION This was a pilot project organised by the National Development Officer John Inglese in association with the Active Australia Campaign and was a great success and enjoyed by all who participated. The Bocce Federation of Australia thanks John Inglese for his initiative and hope that more people become involved next year. This competition succeeded in bringing back some old players and also brought in new players to the Sport. Our thanks to all the contestants and particularly the Veneto Club for participating in this event and in particular to Rick Gatto for his contribution. PARLIAMENTARY CHALLENGE This tournament was held for the second time at the Veneto Club in August. Our thanks to the Veneto Club for their support and contribution to this challenge. The BFA hopes this will become an annual event. For the second time Labor was victorious.

COACHING The BFA has been attempting for some time to bring an International Coach from France to Australia next year. We hope that our effort will be successful.

AUSTRALIAN SENIOR BOCCE CHAMPIONSIDP MENS AND LADIES

this variation is to enable some states who have a greater number of players than others to partake and up to 16 teams may participate. The Bocce Federation of Australia has invited both China and Japan to play in this tournament and we hope that they will attend. It would be good for the sport of Bocce if a tournament could be organised between Australia and surrounding countries.

Next year these titles will be held in Victoria on Queen's Birthday Weekend. Tony Pegoraro Secretary Bocce Federation of Australia

Basketball Report The challenge ahead for the 'Bulleen Veneto Lions' basketball team was to win the grand fmal. This seemed a huge task to achieve after losing previous games to the opposition. Playing away from our home basketball stadium was a disadvantage and on paper, the odds were heavily stacked against us. The 18th June 2001, the combination of late night games and team practise sessions paid off by 'Bulleen Veneto Lions' winning the summer 2000/01 season grand final. The heaviest blow was dished by 'Bulleen Veneto Lions' during the first half scoring 16 points more than the opposition and to add salt to the wound another unanswered 12 points where added during the second half bringing the total to 28 points. All team members playing an outstanding game contributing to the 28 point grand final victory. After 'Bulleen Veneto Lions' successful grand final win the team was promoted to the B grade division, currently we are halfway through the new season and still playing at an over-all competitive steady pace as we did last season. The club/team would also like to welcome Dee Senaratne who joined the team and has already made an impact in his first season, averaging a high number of rebounds weekly. Another achievement which has not gone unnoticed is the 'Veneto Tigers' win in the second division C2 grandJinal. Overall the Veneto Club basketball teams have experienced their most successful season since the commencement four years ago. During the second half of the 2001 season the

Anyone interested in basketball please don't hesitate to come down to The Veneto Club

GYM REPO RT The past year has been a busy time for the sports centre with an increase in court booking and Gym Memberships. The Gymnasium in particular has seen a far better performance this year in comparison to the prevrous 3 years. Thanks largely to a successful local advertising campaign. However, despite all the sport centre's considerable success this year, our goal of it becoming financially solvent without the backing of the Veneto Club is still to be realised.

The Bulleen Boomers have just successfully opened their 2001 campaign. They have many home games here at the Veneto Club in November, December and January so be sure to come along and be a part of the ACTION. In closing I thank with appreciation the on-going support of the Office Staff as well as the Committee, in particular the new and exciting direction and advice of Mr Giancarlo Peruzzo.
