Manassas Park High cancels varsity football By Jeff Malmgren Times Staff Writer

Manassas Park has had success in football, winning a state title in 2004 and going 8-4 in 2012. Since then the program has faltered, leading to low turnout and the cancellation of the 2018 season.

Manassas Park’s High School’s reluctant decision last week to cancel its 2018 varsity football season due to low turnout has since had a ripple effect in the schedules of nearby programs such as Brentsville and Kettle Run high schools. Low player turnout during preseason practices led to the move Manassas Park made Aug. 14, only 11 days before the Cougars’ scheduled season-opening game against Kettle Run. So Kettle Run had little time to find a new opponent for its Aug. 24 contest and now plans to play only nine games with byes during Week 1 and Week 10 (Oct. 26). Brentsville had better options

to adjust its schedule with the Tigers’ game against Manassas Park scheduled for Nov. 2. They switched that Week 11 game to a bye and added a game against Central Woodstock to their previous bye week, Sept. 21. Manassas Park, meanwhile, will play only a junior varsity schedule this fall with expected varsity athletes eligible to play. “My heart is heavy for everyone at Manassas Park,” Kettle Run coach Charlie Porterfield said. “I know that it was a tough decision to make, but ultimately was the correct one. “Having played them for the last three years I know those are tough kids,” he said. “They will bounce back.” Manassas Park canceled its varsity season after its preseason

practice roster included only 30 athletes with an average of only 15 healthy players available each practice, principal Pamela Kalso wrote in a letter sent to members of the Manassas Park community. “Many of these athletes have little, if any, varsity experience,” she wrote. So Manassas Park administrators consulted with the VHSL, which recommends that a school play a varsity football schedule only if it has at least 25 viable players. Otherwise, “Playing at the varsity level would expose student athletes to a higher risk of injury,” Kalso wrote, “and that participation posed a serious safety threat.” See FOOTBALL, Page 2

Last call for Kline’s Freeze Yorkshire ice cream shop closes after 53 years By Jill Palermo

Kline’s Freeze, a Manassas summertime tradition since 1965, twirled its last soft-serve ice cream cones, cherry-topped sundaes and tall, frosty milkshakes to hundreds of loyal customers who stood in lines that snaked around both sides of its iconic blue-and-white building for most of the day Sunday, Aug. 19, the final day of business for owners James and Lorraine Kline Croushorn. Together, the couple have run the ice cream stand, located on Centreville Road in Yorkshire, since they took over from Lorraine’s parents, Paul and June Kline, when they retired. “My daddy’s favorite thing to do was to watch kids eat ice cream. It’s a happy thing,” Lorraine Croushorn said outside the restaurant Sunday evening. “I’ll bet he’s smiling on us today.” See KLINE’S, Page 2

Citing too few players, Manassas Park High cancels varsity football FOOTBALL, from Page 1 Two other VHSL teams recently decided to cancel their 2018 varsity schedules. Park View High School, in Loudoun County, reportedly had only 18 players attend preseason tryouts, which limited the school to only a JV team. Meanwhile Charles City High School, in **, had to scrap the season for its entire program. “It’s a shame, but it’s definitely a trend,” said Fauquier County’s Liberty High School coach Sean Finnerty, whose Eagles had to cancel their freshman season due to low turnout. “I guess times are changing. Maybe athletics aren’t as important as they once were.” Liberty’s freshman participation dropped from around 35 players the previous two seasons to around 20 this season. At nearby Patriot High School, in Nokesville, participation dropped from around 145 players in the overall program (varsity, junior varsity

Pioneers coach Brud Bicknell speculated that participation may have dropped for many VHSL teams due to concern from recent studies that link

football to brain injuries such as CTE. “Residual [effect] from the whole concussion-awareness deal,” he said. “And, I hate to say this, but I think football’s become too hard for a lot of kids. “I don’t know what the future

holds in this” sport, he said. Participation in Liberty’s overall program dropped from around 85 last season to around 75 in 2018. “It really is a shame that we can’t get more kids,” Finnerty said. “Not having middle school sports [in Fauquier County] hurts us. For football, they have to go out and play in other organizations.” Manassas Park hopes its newly formed middle school program will help build the participation numbers at the high school level so the Cougars can play a varsity schedule again in 2019 and beyond. On-field success could also aid teams that have struggled to maintain adequate rosters. Manassas Park finished last season with a 1-9 record after going 2-8 in 2016, 0-10 in 2015, 1-9 in 2104 and 2-8 in 2013. Park View, similarly, has eight consecutive losing seasons with records of 0-10, 2-8, 2-8, 0-10, 2-8 and 0-10, from 2017 to 2012.

Paul Kline, who passed away in 2006, grew up on a dairy farm near what is now Innovation Park. He was a door-to-door delivery man and brought milk to the ice-cream shop in the 1950s, back when it was a Tastee-Freeze, and then scooped it up for himself in 1965. Lorraine Croushorn said she remembers coming to work with her dad when she was 7 years old. All seven kids Kline kids helped out, five girls and two boys. The family expanded the operation to a second location, Kline’s Drive-In, which operated on Nokesville Road near the Manassas Airport for 38 years, from 1969 to 2007. Lorraine’s brother Lynn and his wife, Joan, ran Kline’s Drive In while the Croushorns ran the original store. But after spending decades running the shop every summer – a job that fell mostly to Lorraine, as James also worked as a service manager for Southern States in Calverton – the couple decided to make this summer their last. “It’s hard. We love serving ice cream but we’re getting old,” James

The right time

Over the years, the value of the half-acre lot that includes the shop has risen exponentially. The property was purchased in 2007 for $2.7 million and then again in 2014 for $4 million by its current owner: Lindsay Holdings LLC. The Kline family never owned the building or the property, Lorraine Croushorn said. When the When the Lindsay group bought the property, they did so with plans to expand their automotive operation. The company operates Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep dealership and a collision center on nearby parcels. A site plan Lindsay submitted to Prince William County officials in 2017 as part of an application for a special-use permit shows a future Lindsay Volkswagen dealership where the Kline’s Freeze building now stands. The Croushorns have been on a year-to-year lease for the property since 2014, but the couple never felt pressured to close Kline’s, Lorraine Croushorn said. “The Lindsay family has been so good to us and so accommodating,” she added.

The decision to close now, she said, is theirs. “This is the right time for us,” Lorraine Croushorn said. The couple hung out at the walkup restaurant most of the day Sunday and were said they were heartened to see so many customers come out to say goodbye. “It’s been busy all week, but this has been extraordinary,” James Croushorn said of the weekend foot traffic. “I’m afraid we’re going to run out of ice cream.” The store was scheduled to close at 10 p.m. that night, but the couple said they weren’t sure if supplies would hold out that long. By 7 p.m., there were 88 people in two separate lines. Many said they’d heard about Kline’s Freeze closing on Facebook and had to make one last trip. They included Sarah Mysinger who came from Fairfax for one last cone of chocolate ice cream. She recalled coming to Kline’s when she was a kid, when her dad took her to the Old Dominion Speedway on Friday nights. “I’m sad to see it go for sure,” Mysinger said. “And I haven’t even been here in years.” Deborah and Molly Kelly were in line for a second time that night. They’d ordered chicken nuggets earlier and were waiting again for ice cream. Deborah Kelly recalled taking Molly and her friends to Kline’s Freeze after swim team practices years ago. Molly said she wanted her own daughter, age 1, to try it for herself. “You could just pop up to the window and they had every kind of cone,” Deborah Kelly said of their visits to Kline’s in years past. “There were places to sit outside, and it was just really nice. You’d usually see people you knew from the area.” Hiram Andradez was in line behind Mysinger, waiting for one last milkshake. He brought his family from Centreville. “I saw that they were closing and said I gotta come up here at least one more time,” he said. “For ice cream, this was the place.” Reach Jill Palermo at jpalermo@ fauquier.com

Speech teacher enters 2019 race for Brentsville supervisor By Jill Palermo

Times Staff Writer

Maggie Hansford is a speech teacher and mom of three who’s tired of Prince William County schools being perennially underfunded and overcrowded. She’s also frustrated by planning decisions that leave “sidewalks to nowhere” and create new schools that few students can reach on foot. All of these shortcomings, Hansford says, keep Prince William County from attracting the kind of commercial development that could take the pressure off residential tax bills. Those are among the issues Hansford, 39, says she’ll address if elected to the Prince William County Board of Supervisors in 2019. “I don’t want to have the highest class sizes in all of Northern Virginia,” Hansford said, noting that Prince William spends the lowest amount,

on a per-pupil basis, of all school divisions in the Washington, D.C., area, according to an annual report of the Washington Area Boards Maggie Hansford of Education. “I want to pay our teachers competitive salaries and address the needs of our students.” Hansford, a speech pathologist at T. Clay Elementary School in Nokesville, is the first Democrat to announce her candidacy for the Brentsville District supervisor’s seat. Supervisor Jeanine Lawson, a Republican, has held the seat since a 2014 special election called when former Supervisor Wally Covington, also a Republican, was appointed to be a district court judge. Lawson confirmed this week she will run for re-election.

The daughter of a federal prison guard, Hansford said she’s long been drawn to public service. She has Midwestern roots. She attended college and graduate school at the University of Central Missouri and began her career in Chicago, where she was speech therapist at Northwestern Hospital’s Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, formerly the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, before moving to New Bristow Village 10 years ago with her husband of 14 years. The couple has three boys, ages 5, 8 and 12, who attend T. Clay Wood and Marsteller Middle schools, keep busy with youth sports and attend Trinity Episcopal Church in Manassas. After the sudden passing of their 3-month-old daughter in 2009, Hansford led a program in a local nonprofit that helps families cope with infant and child loss. She also serves as a volunteer board member of her com-

ACTS opens new Hunger Prevention Center

Monthly households served jumps from 660 to 950 since opening By James Ivancic Times Staff Writer

Bigger is better when it comes to feeding the hungry. The food collection and distribution service operated by Action in Community Through Service in eastern Prince William County just got bigger. The former 1,900-square-foot operation now covers 3,300 square feet. That means the new Hunger Prevention Center can take in more donations than before. It occupies a building behind the ACTS family services center at 3901 ACTS Lane in Dumfries. It no longer shares space with the ACTS thrift store. The hunger prevention center has been open for more than a month, but a ribbon-cutting ceremony and reception was held Aug. 15 to formally mark its opening. Attending were ACTS board members, Prince William Board of Supervisors Chairman Corey Stewart, R-At Large; Supervisor Maureen Caddigan, R-Potomac; Deputy County Executive Elijah Johnson and Prince William County Chamber of Commerce Chair Betty Dean. The Hylton Foundation underwrote the $1.4 million cost to buy the building and gave $115,000 to renovate it. ACTS Board Chairman David Strand said the expanded quarters will enable staff to be “more efficient and effective.” Classes on nutrition will now be available to help recipients make healthier choices in what they eat and how they prepare their meals. Health and wellness case managers will be working with those receiving food, said Steven Liga, chief executive officer of ACTS. Wegmans staff members will teach food-preparation skills. The poor naturally buy the cheapest food, which might not be the healthiest. “Our job is to make sure they get healthy food and know how to use it,” Liga told the crowd of about 50 people who came out on a hot morning

munity’s homeowner’s association. In addition to talking about adequate funding for Prince William schools and better mobility around the county, including more bike paths and sidewalks, Hansford is also campaigning on preserving the rural crescent, which she says should be protected from further development to protect green space and direct development in places already served by existing infrastructure. “We must respect and value the rural crescent. We need to protect green space, both for the preservation of the environment, as well as for our quality of life,” Hansford said. “The rural crescent is important not only for Brentsville, but also for Prince William County as a whole.” Reach Jill Palermo at jpalermo@ fauquier.com

ACTS fun fair planned Sept. 22 Nokesville United Methodist Church will hold a “fun fair” on Saturday, Sept. 22, to promote the work of ACTS. The 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. fair will be held on the church grounds at 12550 Aden Road. The event will offer fun, food and health screenings. There will be a scavenger hunt, tractor cars on display, an obstacle course, face-painting, silent auction, raffle and a bounce house as well as a high school choir and dance team. Chicken and pork barbecue sandwiches, cole slaw and baked beans will be sold. Health screenings will include free sight and hearing checks by the Lions Club, free oral cancer screenings by Nokesville Family Dentistry and free self-defense instruction by Damsel in Distress.

ACTS opened a bigger food pantry in Dumfries. for the ribbon-cutting. ACTS receives donated food and other items from area grocery stores, private donations and allotments from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and goods from the Capital Area Food Bank. ACTS serves up to 1,000 households per month. In the past year, ACTS served an average of 660 households per month. That number jumped to more than 950 households per month for the past three months when the new center was open, Liga said. About 680,000 pounds of food are distributed by ACTS each year. Refrigeration units allow the hunger center to provide various meats, dairy products, fresh fruit and other foodstuffs not always supplied at other food pantries. Deli sandwiches and baked goods are also available. Everything is weighed to track the amount of goods received through donations and dispersed to the needy. ACTS serves the needs of diabetics and others on special diets. It also supplies baby food and diapers – “5,000 diapers a month,” said Philip Edney, the hunger prevention center’s program manager. Household supplies and pet food are also given out.

A team of volunteers keeps the center going by helping those going through a check-in process to receive aid and filling bags with the requested food items. The hunger center is open from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and 1 to 3:30 p.m. Monday and Thursday; 1 to 3:30 p.m. and 5 to 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, and 9 to 11:30 a.m. Friday. It is closed Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. ACTS has been serving the needy for nearly 50 years. It will celebrate its golden anniversary in March with a gala at the Hylton Performing Arts Center in Manassas. ACTS is trying to line up a speaker from each of the churches involved in founding ACTS in 1969. The churches came together to help a family displaced by a fire. Their work expanded into starting the county’s first food bank and establishing homeless shelters in local churches. ACTS today also operates a crisis helpline, assists victims of sexual assault and domestic violence, runs an emergency homeless shelter, operates an affordable housing program and helps women achieve economic independence and self-sufficiency. ACTS uses the proceeds from its thrift store to help support its various programs. ACTS services the Greater Prince William County area, including the cities of Manassas and Manassas Park. Mitchel Raftelis, former Quantico mayor, councilmember, dies at 95 By Aileen M. Streng Contributing Writer

Mitchel Raftelis, who died last week, was synonymous with the town of Quantico for those who live there and many others who knew

him. Raftelis was born in the town in 1922. He was town treasurer/clerk and served on the Quantico Town Council from 1967-1998. He was mayor from 1998 to 2006, and then

served again on the council from 2006-2010. He was also the town historian. Raftelis, 95, passed away Aug. 14. “He was an integral part of the Quantico community,” said Quantico Vice Mayor Rusty Kuhns, who has been on the Quantico Town Council for 20 years. “There was no one more knowledgeable and more involved than Mitchel Raftelis. If you had to go find something out, you would go to Mitchel. “He loved this town. We had a lot of discussions. I learned a lot from him,” Kuhns said. “He was a sweet man. I have a lot of good memories.” “Mitchel went out of his way to make a lot of friends in the county and on the state level,” Kuhns said. Among those were Prince William County Supervisor Maureen Caddigan of the Potomac District. “He was such a gentleman. He loved the town of Quantico and did so much for the town,” Caddigan said, highlighting the town park that now bears his and his wife Georgia’s name – the Raftelis Potomac River Park. In 1985 and as mayor, Raftelis worked with the federal government to have 4.2 acres along River Road in the town turned over to the National Park Service. The land was later deeded to the town and has served as the town’s municipal park ever since. Over the course of 17 years, Raftelis cobbled together more than $800,000 in various grants and programs for a new riprap sea wall, a 185-foot transient floating boat dock, a new deck and bike path along with vegetation and landscaping. “He persevered,” Caddigan said. “He wasn’t shy about asking for funds or help for the town. We could never say no to him.”

“There was only one Mitch Raftelis, so highly thought of by everyone. His only interest was Quantico,” she said. “He will be sorely missed. He touched so many lives. People can never Mitchel Raftelis forget what he has done for the town of Quantico.” Raftelis was a graduate of Occoquan High School and Virginia Tech. He served as a second lieutenant in the Army in World War II in France. In 1949, he started his career as an accountant for Zarpas and Company, and then continued with Broyhill and Sons Construction Company. He began his own accounting practice in 1958. Raftelis participated in the Masonic Lodge, Order of AHEPA and Sojourners organizations. He also served on the Prince William County Wetlands Board and St. Katherine’s Greek Orthodox Church Board. Since 2010, he volunteered with municipal projects for the town. He is survived by his wife, Georgia; two daughters, Anastasia and Joyia; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. A funeral service was held Aug. 21 at the Quantico Marine Corps base Marine Memorial Chapel, followed by interment at Quantico National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests consideration of a contribution to Nativity of the Theotokos Greek Orthodox Greek Orthodox Church, 12326 Spotswood Furnace Road, Fredericksburg, or another charity.

Police: Haymarket man threw child 'over an embankment into a creek'

A Haymarket man is behind bars after he was arrested for driving with his 2-year-old son on his lap and then throwing the toddler over an embankment and into a creek while fleeing police. Kyle Steven Sunday, 28, of Haymarket, was spotted by a police officer in the Town of Strasburg late in the afternoon on Monday, Aug. 13, driving his vehicle with the 2-yearold on his lap. Strasburg is a town of about 6,400 located about 45 miles west of Haymarket. When the officer tried to pull him

over, Sunday stopped his vehicle and fled on foot, carrying his child, according to a Strasburg Police Department press release. Kyle Sunday As the officer chased him, Sunday allegedly threw the boy “over an embankment and into a creek,” resulting in the child suffering “several lacerations and scratches,” the press release said. The police officer stopped chasing Sunday to retrieve the child, who was treated by fire and rescue personnel.

In the meantime, Sunday eluded the officer but was later tracked down and found hiding inside the attic of a nearby home. The Virginia State Police, Strasburg police and law-enforcement agencies from Warren and Shenandoah counties participated in the search and ultimate capture of Sunday, the police press release said. During Sunday’s apprehension, a Virginia State Police officer’s firearm discharged, resulting in no injuries. The discharge is being investigated by state police, the press release said. The child’s mother, Kristi Ann Letima, 27, was also arrested for filing a false police report and for child neglect in connection with the incident. Letima reported to police that

someone had stolen her car with her 2-year-old son inside. Police later determined Sunday is the child’s father, and Sunday and Letima “have been in a relationship,” the press release said. Sunday was wanted for arrest in Prince William County and Maryland for a violation of probation and other charges, according to the press release. He was arrested and charged by Strasburg police on several charges in connection with the Aug. 13 incident, including reckless driving, felony eluding while operating a motor vehicle and felony abuse and neglect of a child. Sunday was being held at the Rappahannock Shenandoah Warren Jail without bond Aug. 15.

OPINION WWW.PRINCEWILLIAMTIMES.COM

Gainesville / Prince William Times | August 22, 2018

School has begun: Put down your phone while driving and lock up your gun With kids back in school, safety of all kinds should be our No. 1 concern, particularly in the wake of the horrible school shootings last year, which had everyone on edge. Here are two things we can do with very little effort: Put down our cellphones while driving and lock up our guns. Rappahannock-Rapidan Health District -- one of 35 divisions of the Virginia Department of Health, this one serving Fauquier, Orange, Madison, Rappahannock and Culpeper counties -- has made the locking up guns easy. It dipped into its budget to buy 2,000 gun trigger locks, which are free to residents “no questions asked.” In meetings with citizens, the organization found top among concerns was not only gun violence, but the area’s suicide rate, which is four times as high as that of the state’s. Recent statistics show 16.9 suicides per 100,000 people in the Rappahannock -Rapidan five-county region compared to 4.27 per 100,000 people across Virginia. In 2012, the American Academy of Pediatrics reported that while gun locks are used in about 71 percent of households with children under 12, lock use drops to about 58 percent when the children become teenagers. Yet it is the adolescent, the report said, “with their often impulsive behavior,” who are most at risk of suicide by gun. “The odds

are particularly high if the gun is kept loaded,” the report says. The trigger locks, made by Master Lock, have a combination lock and fit on all rifles, shotguns and handguns. One thousand of the free gun locks are still available, and residents can pick one up at their county health department, or at partner distributors: Warrenton Pediatrics, Piedmont Pediatrics and Virginia Hobbies. We strongly believe in constitutional rights. With those rights come responsibilities. Responsible gun ownership preserves that right while protecting all of us. We will continue to follow this program with interest. A 2010 public OUR VIEW service advertising campaign by AutoWeek, called “Goodbye,” compared cellphone use behind the wheel to a game of Russian roulette. The ad featured images of a handgun next to a bloody Blackberry. It is an image that sticks with you. In 2016 alone, 3,450 people were killed and 391,000 were injured in motor-vehicle crashes involving distracted drivers, according to statistics reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. During daylight hours, approximately 481,000 drivers are using cell phones while driving. Since 2007, drivers aged 16-24 have been

observed manipulating handheld devices behind the wheel at greater rates than adults. Many states have laws prohibiting use of electronic devices that do not have a hands-free mode. Virginia, however, has so far failed to do so. In Virginia, only drivers under the age of 18 are prohibited from using cellphones, including handsfree devices. Those 18 and older may use their cellphones. Texting while driving is prohibited for all ages but is notoriously difficult for police officers to prove, limiting infractions. According to the Center for Disease Control, sending or reading a text message takes your eyes off the road for about 5 seconds. That’s long enough to cover a football field

while driving at 55 mph. That can easily be more than one bus stop or crosswalk. Dutch Mandel, AutoWeek’s associate publisher and editorial director at the time of the advertising campaign, said it well: “There is no reason why you need to have a 6-ounce phone attached to your ear when you have a 4,000-pound car attached to your brain.” Hopefully, Virginia lawmakers can iron out their differences to further discourage the use of cell phones while driving. But this is an area where common sense can prevail. If your vehicle does not have hands-free capability, put the phone down. It can wait. If it can’t, pull over. Lives depend on it.

Women’s Equality Day is on Aug. 26

Motivated to vote for Rep. Rob Wittman

On Aug. 26, our nation celebrates Women’s Equality Day. This day recognizes the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, giving women the right to vote. Many fearless and dedicated women suffered jail time, physical assaults by the police and spectators (at demonstrations), as well as insults during the struggle for voting rights. This struggle spanned more than seven decades. However, it was not until 1973 that Congress by resolution designated this day as “Women’s Equality Day.” The League of Women Voters was founded in 1920 by Carrie Chapman Catt, President of the National American Woman Suffrage Association, during its convention which was held six months before the ratification. She was a women’s rights activist and a suffragist who stated correctly that the vote was the “emblem of equality” for all citizens, women and men. The League of Women Voters of Virginia celebrates the fact that in

Election time is around the corner, and I for one am very motivated to vote for my congressman, Rob Wittman. I am a homeowner, resident and voter in Prince William County. It is a great time to be an American. Our country is on the rise again. The second quarter GDP experienced a growth rate of 4.1 percent, unemployment is 3.9 percent and black and Hispanic unemployment is at an all-time low. I was looking at my IRA the other day, and wow, I may be able to retire one day after all. Moreover, in all this good eco-

2018 there are 38 female legislators in the General Assembly as compared to 24 in 2015, an increase of 14. Although the LWV-VA does not endorse any candidates, we recognize this historical achievement. The LWV-VA is a non-partisan organization. It provides voter services and citizen education and advocates at the state level for particular policies that are in the public interest. nomic good news let us not forget that our Congressman Rob Wittman deservers a share of the credit. Rob voted for the tax cuts, and the regulatory reforms that the economy needed. Both those measures got us the booming economy we have now. Rob’s opponent will try to repeal both which would put our economy at risk. Rob will vote to keep our prosperity going. Let us vote to keep him in office. David Shephard Manassas

REPLACEMENTS, ARE YOU READY? Local rivals Patriot, Battlefield unveil revamped football rosters

They’ve only played six times but the Patriot-Battlefield rivalry is intense. Battlefield leads the series 4-2, but don’t remind the Bobcats about last year when Patriot won 14-7 to claim the Cedar Run District title. They meet again Nov. 2 at Patriot.

“We have to work harder since we lost so many seniors,” says Battlefield Mark Cox, whose Bobcats do have four returning linemen. The Bobcats open with three straight home games, starting with Oakton on Friday.

Patriot’s plan: Beat Battlefield, Battlefield’s back with new repeat as Cedar Run champs QB, experience on the line By Jeff Malmgren Times sTaff WriTer

Brud Bicknell wouldn’t mind losing his first football game this season. As long as his Patriot Pioneers use that as a springboard to success, as they did in 2017. Colonial Forge dominated Patriot in Stafford to begin last season, 40-3, but then the Pioneers’ only two other losses came against eventual Class 6 state champion Westfield, including a 35-6 loss in the Region D tournament semifinals. In fact, following that loss to Forge, Patriot outscored its opponents 412-200 en route to finishing with a 9-3 record and the Cedar Run District championship. “I hope we kind of follow that pattern,” Bicknell, the Pioneers’ head coach, said. “Last year’s Colonial Forge game, we weren’t a good football team. … I thought we got better each week. “Hopefully we can make the same progress,” he said. “We have a chance to have really successful team.” Patriot will begin the 2018 season Friday against Colonial Forge. The Pioneers will have a home game, but they also have only four returning starters on offense and six on defense after losing to graduation players honored at 10 all-region positions. “We’re trying to fit the pieces of the puzzle together,” Bicknell said. “We’re going to have to stay healthy

Former No. 1 back Ike Onwuka, an all-region first team selection and district Offensive Player of the Year, graduated along with secondary rushers Bo Giwa (all-region second team receiver) and Michael Mensah (all-district second team running back). Marcus McKay returned as the only player with even minimal experience carrying the ball out of the backfield, and he will share carries with Jahmia Marcelle and Jacob Carter. Patriot also has only two returning starters on its offensive line, but that includes the Pioneers’ lone allstate player from 2017, Jakai Moore, who has NCAA Division I scholarship offers from at least 20 schools. Bicknell has high expectations for Moore, but he also hopes the senior doesn’t try too hard to compensate

Battlefield isn’t usually in a situation like this. The traditional Haymarket power has just four returning starters, leading to a roster revamp that might cause some coaches to quietly adjust their postseason expectations. Not at Battlefield, where coach Mark Cox has a wealth of talented new starters, including new quarterback Hunter Key, linebacker Alex Ward and running backs Trylon Richards, Steve McCarthy and Savion Phinizy. “I would not label this as rebuilding. We still expect to be in the playoffs and win the conference. We think we have the kids to make it to that point,” said Cox, whose squad went 7-4 last year. All four of the Bobcats’ returning starters are big guys, bringing stability to both lines. They include University of Richmond-bound tight end/defensive end Ryan Cole, offensive tackle Riley Fox, left tackle/defensive lineman Frank Moret-Brunet and center Egan Calhoun. “The line is the core of the team anyway,” says Cox. Key takes over for Graham Walker at quarterback. A former backup receiver, the 5-foot-10, 165-pound senior is a dangerous runner and the offense has been tweaked to take

He’s quick,” Cox said. Other key new starters include running backs Richards, McCarthy and Phinizy, a transfer from Paul VI. Kevin Zieleniewski is expected to excel as a versatile wide receiver. The Bobcats are still stinging from their final two games of 2017, when they lost to local rival Patriot 14-7 and then were ousted in the region playoffs first round by eventual Class 6 champion Westfield, 28-14. A win over Patriot would have given the Bobcats the Cedar Run District title, and helped their playoff seeding. “If you win the district, you have a good seed. We did not win the district and Patriot had more power points,” said Cox. Against mighty Westfield, Battlefield was locked in a tight game before key mistakes led to some offseason angst. “The mistakes we made

Veteran QB Sonnenberg keeps Pioneers’ hopes bright PATRIOT, from page 9 for the offensive line’s general inexperience. “Sometimes he tries to do too much and he’s ineffective,” Bicknell said. “He’s got to play within the framework of what he needs to do, and if he does that he can be dominant.” Moore will also help protect senior quarterback Chris Sonnenberg, a second-year starter. And pass protection may be the most important role for Patriot’s offensive line early in the season. “Until we can get our running game going, he’s going to have to be accurate and make good decisions,” Bicknell said of Sonnenberg. “Early in the season that might be our best way to move the ball.” Sonnenberg has sophomore Jalen Stroman as a premiere option at receiver.

Stroman also serves as an anchor of Patriot’s defense, returning as an all-region second team free safety. “Defensively we look pretty good,” Bicknell said. “Our secondary is essentially the same group that played last year. “We have to replace the linebacker corps,” Bicknell said of a departing group that included district Defensive Player of the Year Elijah Snow, “but the new guys there are helped by what we have up front.” Patriot’s defensive line includes Tyler Negron, a 2017 all-district second team player who also serves as an offensive weapon this season at tight end. PHOTO BY CHRISTOPHER SIX “We’ve got depth,” Bicknell said of the Pioneers’ “Defensively we look pretty good,” says Patriot coach Brud defense. “We’ve got people that have stepped up Bicknell, whose Pioneers went 9-3 and won their first playand done a good job.” off game since 2014 last year.

Bobcats’ offense relying on fresh, talented faces BATTLEFIELD, from page 9 blew it for us. We had an interception returned for a touchdown and another blocked punt for a TD,” said Cox. Despite the wave of statewide concern over declining football participation levels, Battlefield has seen a robust turnout with 165 players trying out at all levels, said Cox, forcing cuts because “we didn’t have enough uniforms or helmets.” Cox said he’s carrying 98 on the varsity and JV combined, but he did report lower freshman numbers. “This is the biggest sophomore class we’ve ever had,” said Cox of

the 55 sophomores in the program. “I’m excited about the kids we have. Once we get the experience, it will be great to see what they can do.” The Bobcats have an identical schedule to 2017, opening with Oakton this Friday and closing with Patriot on Nov. 2. Battlefield has just two losing seasons since starting football in 2005, and won the Class 6A state title in 2010 under Cox, who was the school’s first coach, then left in 2015 before returning last season. He’s 92-40 over 12 seasons with the Bobcats.
