Ileana Collazo | Contemporary Artist

Bio: Collazo lives in Miami, Florida. She was born in Cuba and lived in Spain, New York, Vermont, and Massachusetts. She participated in group and solo exhibitions in England, France, Mexico, Portugal, Switzerland, and the United States.

About her Digital Work: In 2023, Ileana created the acronym HICAE, "Human Intelligence Creative Artistic Expression," to classify her digital art as a parallel to AI, "Artificial Intelligence" generated art. There is much discussion about how AI will disrupt HICAE, but she regards this new technology as one more form of expression, another step in the evolution of creativity. She believes that the variety of tools, techniques, and ingenuity that encompass the creative process, which includes architecture, music, visual arts, and writing, exponentially enhance one of human beings' most fascinating abilities: that of sharing with the other members of society what each creative mind envisions. And that behind it all is the miracle of the human brain.

Artist Statement: “Art is a wordless language that unites people regardless of age, gender, nationality, or political association. Artists share a lineage that dates to ancient cave paintings. I paint and create digital art, collages, graffiti, videos, and 3-D art. Through my poetry, I paint images with words”.

My Story: “My grandmother's garden is the most heartfelt keepsake of my early years; that magical place became the catalyst for the art I create today. The scrapbook of my mind is filled with treasured memories of time spent alone in that sacred space. My childhood was tumultuous and unsettling. At age five, communism forever changed my family's trajectory; by age nine, shortly after the new regime confiscated my family's home and belongings, I witnessed the demise of my father's life work and his heart attack and nervous breakdown. Our family sought shelter in my grandmother's Victorian country house. My parents struggled to get our family out of the country for three years, and I started to believe we might never leave. Then, suddenly, my mother packed our bags, and we boarded a plane for Madrid, Spain, where we lived for eleven months. My ancestral home’s history, architecture, museums, and gardens fascinated me. I fell in love with the old city, but for the third time in my short life, I had to say goodbye to a place I came to love. Life in the United States was very different; my parents struggled to re-create what they no longer had enough time to replicate: the life they lost and mourned. But they were resistant and resilient; our family set roots, I met my soul mate, and embarked on the creative path that, to this day, gives profound meaning to my life. I have experienced many memorable moments throughout my life. But the three years spent in my grandmother's garden among the flowers, birds, butterflies, and ever-changing skies filled me with the wonder that fuels my art and poetry”.
