Watersports training & holidays

Welcome to Rockley Watersports The phrase ‘time flies’ has really resonated with me over the last 12 months as we celebrated a fantastic 40 years of offering sailing tuition and holidays. With the risk of sounding like I’m on a reality tv show, the journey has been phenominal! I remember when my Mum and Dad first told my siblings and I about their great plan to set up a sailing centre - it sounded like a mad idea, but a great one too!

Fast forward 10 years and in July 1986 I’m working as a qualified Dinghy Instructor teaching a Wayfarer fleet to earn a bit of pocket money. Fast forward another 30 years and I’m watching my eldest son, Nathanial doing the exact same thing! Our passion for what we do at Rockley is undimmed and if anything we are more excited about the future and the opportunities to share what we love with all of you. Throughout all our varied activities, training courses and experiences we have been careful to stick to that original idea of providing tuition with a personal touch and fun vibe for children, teens, adults and groups who have an enthusiasm for sport, the outdoors and life-affirming experiences.

WHO WE ARE - WHAT'S OUR STORY to ... sum us up

We are a bunch of people - married with families or enjoying being single.

IT ALL STARTED WITH WANTING TO TEACH KIDS HOW TO SAIL...

We have children and a lot of dogs. We love to swim, cycle, run (sometimes simultaneously), sail, wakeboard, ski and windsurf. We’re partial to a g&t, some love to bake and most of us (OK all of us) love to eat cake. We are all different and similar in equal measures, but there are a few things we all have in common - we love where we live in fabulous Dorset, we love the outdoors, we love the water and we are passionate about what we do! Welcome to Rockley Watersports!

and ...... it all began.....

We have been teaching sailing and watersports activities for an amazing 40 years and it all started with just a caravan on the beach as an office and a few boats. The idea was to find a way of introducing more youngsters to sailing. 40 years later we continue this aim but it’s now more than that. Our School and Group activity trips offer a new and exciting way to educate youngsters, our BTEC L3 (Outdoor Adventure) course offers an alternative to A levels, a gateway to University and the opportunity for individuals to pursue a career in the watersports industry, our RYA Instructor Courses sees Rockley train more individuals to Instructor level than any other sailing centre in the UK and our junior, youth and adult courses means we get to see so many experience the joy of sailing, often for the first time. Bring on the next few years!

“There just aren’t enough superlatives to round up this last year - crazy, amazing, fantastic, chaotic, a complete whirlwind of an adventure..... in essence, it’s been amazing! I feel very proud to be in charge during Rockley’s 40th year and of what we have all achieved. I am supported by a great team and it is equally as fun as it is challenging! There are so many highlights of the year (aside from the odd camping trip with my dogs George and Henry as well as the Rockley girls Thursday night bike ride around Dorset) but here are just a few; The relationship we have and the things we do with our chosen charity Julia’s House is something close to my heart and by far the most rewarding part of my job. The Sibling Residential Weekends and the Splash in the Park charity day we host are amazing fun - read about it on pages 38-39.

Over the past 2 years, the Rockley team have collectively cycled, swum and ran thousands of miles, raising over £25,000 for Julias House.

The Dorset School Games hosted at Poole Park Lake brings together primary and secondary school children as part of an initiative to motivate and inspire young people to take part in more competitive school sport. Thirteen schools and over 200 pupils participated in this year’s event. And while all this has been going on, I’ve been busy training for my first Half Iron Man in aid of Julia’s House. I’ll take inspiration from the Brownlee Brothers and all the other amazing British Olympic athletes and will drag myself across the line whatever it takes! So while we undoubtedly live in a world where it feels like social media is taking over, we are still encouraging everyone - young, old, novice and expert to get out on the water, on your bike or whatever takes your fancy and really enjoy the outdoors! www.rockley.org www.rockley.org

FABULOUS locations

south west france There are few places as stunning in France and we have spent a lot of time ensuring we have picked the perfect locations for our school groups and family holidays. Our three centres in south west France - AzuRivage, Le Lac Mimizan and La Rive are based on large, beautiful lakes amongst breath taking forests and within short distances of stunning surf beaches and traditional French culture. Our locations are favourites amongst pupils, teachers and families for the large, safe watersports areas and the warmth of the lakes, making it ideal for all abilities.

Watersports training & holidays

Poole, dorset We all love where we live, beautiful Poole in Dorset and it is absolutely the perfect place for you to learn to sail, windsurf and powerboat and for us to teach you! Poole Harbour offers possibly the safest and most idyllic conditions, a secure and happy setting for children to experience a residential trip away from home. RYA COURSES & Training Rockley is synonymous with sailing expertise and training. Our long record of providing the highest quality of instruction, equipment, safety and of course fun, means we have introduced thousands of individuals, families and school children to the delights of dinghy sailing. We are proud to bring about a life-long love and participation in watersports for the people that visit us.

S ai l i n g At Rockley we offer the whole spectrum of RYA courses - beginner, improver, intermediate and advanced taking you from RYA Stages 1 and 2 through to the RYA advanced sailing modules of RYA Sailing with Spinnakers and RYA Performance Sailing. All our sailing courses are catagorised in to age groups - junior courses (8-11 years), youth courses (12-16 years) and adult courses (17+ years). With courses ranging from a 1 day private tuition to 3-days, 5-days or a 2-day weekend there is plenty to choose from! We use a variety of dinghies suitable for the the type of course and the age group. Beginners will expect to sail anything from a Wayfarer to a Hartley 10 or 12, while improvers and intermediates will take to the waters on a Laser Pico, RS Feva or Laser 2000, RS Vision, Hartley 12, 15 or Hobie 15 to name but a few. All our courses follow the RYA scheme allowing you to gain the much recognised RYA qualifications and develop your sailing skills, but they also offer much more than that - sailing is a great sport to get involved in, it’s fun, exciting, challenging and exhilarating at the same time. Our sailing location is one of the best in the UK and adults love it as much as children do.

WHY AN RYA COURSE? The Royal Yachting Association (RYA) is the National Governing Body for sailing, windsurfing, powerboating and associated activities and is generally considered to provide the benchmark for watersports training standards globally. RYA recognised clubs and centres are inspected and approved by an independent assessor as working to the highest standards for safety, learning and enjoyment for the students of all of their programmes, so this certainly gives peace of mind when entrusting loved ones to a new activity and environment. RYA training is delivered around the world so if you always look for the badge you can be reassured that instruction is consistent and moving from one RYA venue to another shouldn’t result in having to learn everything again from a different syllabus or training style. www.rockley.org

ASK THE EXPERT Watersports training & holidays

Rockley’s Operations Director is himself an avid sailor and loves all things watersports. There’s nothing he doesn’t know when it comes to the water!

Q A

I want to gain my Dinghy Instructor certificate. I am 21 and have sailed all my life, participated in numerous national racing events and am a competent sailor. Is it necessary that I complete the Pre-entry assessment? Simon - London

The short answer is yes! The RYA requires that all potential Dinghy Instructors complete an RYA Assessment before attending the Dinghy Instructor course. We are very fortunate to have an excellent sailing scheme in the UK and clubs up and down the country provide some excellent sail training programmes. However the majority of us tend to focus our personal sailing in specific areas or classes which doesn’t necessarily practice the breadth of skills required to be a good, all round instructor, able to demonstrate all the skills from the RYA syllabus – when was the last time a laser squad sailor had the ability to practise man overboard drill or a 29er practised sailing without a centreboard? In many aspects the assessment ensures that there aren’t any gaps in the skill set and that candidates are ready to progress onto the instructor course with the best chance of success. Good Luck!

YOU CAN CONTACT ROB WITH ANY OF YOUR QUESTIONS ON HELLO@ROCKLEY.ORG

Q A

I would love to find a role in the watersports industry however I don’t have any formal training or background in sailing. What options are available for me? Sarah - Winchester

One of the best ways to get started would be by working within a watersports centre as an instructor. It’s great fun, you’ll get loads of experience in a short space of time and make life long friends. Depending on your existing experience you can do an instructor training programme lasting from a handful of days to a couple of months to gain the necessary pre requisites – we offer anything from a 5 day instructor course for those who have everything in place to an intensive programme lasting 6 weeks where we will take you from a beginner to gaining the necessary skills and understanding to get your first job as an instructor. Alternatively you could combine instructor training with academic studies by completing a programme like our Level 3 BTEC.

Q A

My children have done some sailing courses before but haven’t sailed since last summer, which course should I book them onto? Catherine - Leeds

This is often a worry for improver or intermediate sailors as you are never sure what you’ll remember, or have forgotten, until you get back on the water. This is why for all of our courses apart from beginners the first thing we do is get on the water to have a quick and simple shake down sail to ensure that we have the right groupings to ensure every student has the best opportunity to progress. Over the years we have run sailing courses we have found that: a) many students will be surprised by how much they remember and b) a little time covering previous topics will solidify the foundations on which to build the next stage of progression. So just book yourself onto the course which you feel is the best fit and then trust us to tweak things to make sure they have the best experience possible. www.rockley.org

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WE TALK TO LOCAL GIRL AND OLYMPIC SAILOR LUCY MACGREGOR ABOUT SAILING & her mum's roast dinner! What is your favourite boat to sail in and why?

Too hard to answer! I love to sail a range of boats all the time as every type offers something different....but the Nacra 17 has been great fun!

Do you prefer sailing solo or in a team and why?

Definitely in a team. I love that feeling when you have been working hard together towards a goal and it all comes together.

What do you love the most about Poole?

Something a bit off-piste. These are a set of quick-fire questions, for fun Sea or swimming pool? Sea Trainers or flip flops? Flip flops Beach or mountains? Mountains

I have travelled all around the World to different sailing venues but Poole is one of the most stunning of them all.

Sunday Roast or Bangers and Mash?

Can you see yourself and Kate sailing again in another campaign?

Who would you like to get stuck in a lift with? David Attenborough

Kate and I will always have sailing projects going on together. In 2016 we went to Korea together for a Match Racing Event and competed in the Etchells World Championships together.

Would you ever consider a place in the Volvo Ocean Race or other?

GET ON THE WATER! Our fabulous range of water and land based activities means that the whole family get to have a go on the water no matter what level you are! Our weekly programme of events means that you really can have the holiday you want! Throughout the morning and afternoon we offer 2 hourly sessions of activities for you to pick and choose from so if you are super keen to get on the water or on your bike, you can do so, but if you also want a bit of down time and chill out by the pool with a good book, then you can do that too! Marketing Manager Cassandra Preston took her family to France this year with her husband and 2 children Daisy (7) and Joseph (4) - “This is the perfect holiday for all of us. The children were able to try out all the activities and had an absolutely amazing time with the Instructors. We had lots of fun on the water together as a family, but they also made some great friends and so spent some of their time doing activities with them”. “We all particularly loved the children’s only activity evening as we were able to sit and talk to the other parents while Daisy and Joseph were in safe hands having fun with all the other children. We’re a family that love camping and the outdoors so it really is the perfect holiday for us and most importantly our children absolutely love it!”

YOUR HOLIDAY CHECKLIST With a French Family holiday it’s probably more a case of what not to bring - we’ve tried to include as much as possible in the price of your holiday, so the important things like all meals, bed linen and towels are all included. Here are just a few essentials we recommend; Rash vest – short or long sleeved or long sleeved tshirt Long board shorts Sun hat or cap Lightweight waterproof Sun cream – high factor (25 SPF +) If the weather is cooler than normal you may require some lightweight long trousers and a fleece for on the water also Water bottle

Footwear – old trainers or non slip shoes. (sandals/flip flops are not

THEY TOTALLY ROCKED IT

HAVE YOUR SAY Mummy blogger, sARAH-jayne WINdridgeFrance & HER FAMILY EXPERIENCE LIFE ON A CAMPSITE after winning a family holiday to Azurivage Winning anything (from the silliest game with the kids to a major lottery win … that obviously I’m still waiting for) gives the senses a euphoric buzz … so when you win something that you really want/ really need it makes that contented little buzz all the more apparent. This time, I’m very glad to say, I was lucky in all senses of the word. Not only did I get an email saying that I’d won a wonderful holiday for my family, but it was something different, something that REALLY appealed to our family and something that I never thought would be possible with Archie.

Factfile Sarah-Jayne Windridge-France lives in yo rkshire with her husband Pete and 3 children, archie (aged 13), jem (aged 11) and Scarlett (aged 8) . Sarah-Jayne IS A BLOGGER, WRITER, POET, AUTHOR AND MUM.

When we arrived on site at just after 7.00 pm (French time) the temperature had cooled to a more modest 35 degrees. The cool beer and wine that Mini offered us as we toppled out of the car could not have been more gratefully accepted. That, together with a wonderful meal prepared at the hands of Hayley the Head Chef and her team, and we were already in heaven and ready to explore before hitting the hay.

The kids awoke keen and eager and got their kit on, Scarlett with a little trepidation at going off on her own but with a little convincing by us and the Rockley crew she was up for it nonetheless. With Leanne’s guidance we got Archie on a boat and, as we’d guessed, he LOVED it! Leanne was very honest in admitting to us that she really hadn’t known what to expect, regarding Archie’s needs – but was so happy to have us and Archie aboard. She was thrilled that Archie enjoyed it as much as he did and that she was able to manage our instruction with relative ease. The entertainments that the staff organised each evening were great. The Rockley staff were keen to ensure continued fun for everyone – especially the children and the food every day was fabulous, we couldn’t fault it. ALL the staff were really fabulous and full of life, they really couldn’t have been nicer. A team of friendly, fun, bronzed lovelies, that if I’d have been 20 years younger I’d have readily joined their gang. They were well-trained, knowledgeable and professional, whilst being heaps of fun. Such a great way to gain work and life experience over the summer months. We all had just THE best time – but none moreso than Archie who smiled from start to finish, loved the music, the attention and being on the water (especially at speed).

For me, it was just SO good to take my foot off the gas a little. To delight in spending time with my family and to soak up some sun and to be looked after so very well … I loved honing old sailing skills from my youth and learning new ones on the water and I thoroughly enjoyed a patch of France I hadn’t visited before and making lots of new friends. Rockley you totally rocked it!

GREAT FOR SINGLE PARENT FAMILIES TOO! The social and active nature of our French Family Holidays makes for an ideal holiday for single parents with their children. We create a relaxed environment which means that youngsters can easily make friends and their parents can relax or enjoy the activities with fellow holiday-makers.

"A great activity holiday for single parents - plenty of people for me and my children to get to know, and very relaxing because all meals are catered for. Brilliant!” H eleN B allard www.rockley.org

School & Group Activity Trips - UK & France Over 40 years Rockley has grown and developed to include some of the UK’s most highly regarded residential activity trips for children and young people, with the emphasis on learning by doing. Our original aims are still very much at the heart of the activity programmes today, which focus on building selfconfidence through personal achievement and having fun! We aim to offer an outdoor learning experience that promotes every child’s self-esteem and emotional well-being and encourages pupils to respond positively to new challenges and opportunities. We think that we have found the right balance of enjoyment and learning that satisfies both the pupils and the leaders who run the trips. Whether they are taking to the water sailing, raft-building with classmates or facing the high ropes challenge, pupils develop a belief that they can achieve success both at school and in life.

Schools & Groups manager jack tells us why outdoor learning is key After reading a recent BBC article on how outdoor learning ‘boosts children’s development’ it made me look at what we do at Rockley Adventure and how we can work to show the benefits of outdoor learning to regional, national and international schools. The article highlights that for outdoor learning to come out of the shadows it needs to be fully recognised by policymakers. We fully support this aim to allow outdoor activities to become part of the curriculum and see real value in providing schools and groups with outdoor education options. Up to 10,000 school children get on the water and stay with us across our five centres yearly and from our 40 years’ experience we have found that outdoor educational learning develops social skills, builds leadership qualities and improves team work. As the report states; “…if outdoor learning is part of a school’s curriculum in England, it is largely because the teachers recognise the value of it.” We will continue to promote the benefits and opportunities available to schools and groups and hope that we can all work together to help shape a positive future for children.

Poole Park Lake! Located in the heart of Poole, the lake is ideally placed to offer so much to the local schools and residents of Poole and Bournemouth. During term time Poole Park Lake is filled with primary and secondary school pupils taking part in a whole range of activities including sailing, kayaking, stand up paddleboarding and windsurfing. Through Poole Park, school children are able to experience water activities as part of their school life, enjoy activities away from school and outside the classroom and try challenging activities that may be new to them. Pupils and teachers love the safe environment of Poole Park Lake and the positive experiences it offers.

Locals and tourists can also enjoy the lake through short 2-hour taster sessions and hiring a range of equipment including pedalos SUP’s and kayaks. Children in particular are well served with our popular weekend morning clubs as well our holiday camps. Our camps run throughout all the school holidays and are perfect for those who enjoy the water, love being outside and want to have a whole lot of fun - not to mention all the friends they will make! Or if it’s inspiration you need for your child’s birthday then our 2-hour watersports party promises to be super fun and something completely different! Poole Park is also the location for numerous charity, local and national events including Splash in the Park in aid of Julia’s House as well as the Dorset School Games and the Can Do festival - both aimed at increasing competitive sport in schools and watersports participation. www.rockley.org

It really is all about the kids! Managing Director Pip woods talks about working with julia's house and how it has improved her fitness! It all started in 2014 during an office discussion of who was going to run the Bournemouth Half Marathon. Once enough staff were coerced in to signing up we chose our charity and decided there and then that we were going to whole-heartedly get on board and see if we could make a difference, no matter how little. Members of the Rockley team have visited Julia’s House on several occasions and we have all been completely blown away by exactly what the charity does and the extent to which they positively impact upon so many families. We think the staff at Julia’s house are phenomenal - in their attitude, their positive approach and the passion they have for what they do.

Buy a super cosy Rockley bobble hat at rockleyshop.co.uk and £2 will go towards Julia's House Image courtesy of Millie Pilkington

Meeting all the children, siblings and parents of Julia’s House really inspired us as a Company to do as much as we can individually and collectively to raise money and the profile of the charity - most of these have been sporting endeavours and as a result we are fitter than we’ve ever but the real bonus is that we have made a real difference. We feel truly honoured to be associated with such a wonderful charity.

Splash IN THE PARK Dorset based companies enter a team to compete in an all-day event which sees competitors take part in a host of water and land-based events including the all day kayak marathon, stand up paddleboard racing and the inflatable challenge. In its 2nd year, this popular event saw 12 companies competing to raise an amazing £15,000. It’s competitive and fun in equal measures!

SIBLING WEEKEND For the past 3 years Rockley have hosted a series of sibling weekends where the brothers and sisters of the poorly child get to enjoy a residential weekend away and take part in a range of water activities. It’s a fun packed, fully catered, fantastic weekend where the parents get to pop along to our beach cafe on the Sunday afternoon and watch their children have fun!

"These events with the siblings make such a difference to them and their families and I cannot tell you how highly our relationship with Rockley is valued" Maria Carroll, Sibling worker at Julia’s House

Watersports training & holidays

Rob’s cycling endeavours Inspired by his visit to Julia’s House 3 years ago, Operations Director, Rob has used his passion for cycling to raise as much money as possible as well as completing some amazing challenges. Along with events such as Ride London and the Hospice to Hospice ride, this year Rob completed the Etape for the 3rd year in a row (he is without a doubt our very own Chris Froome!). We can’t even begin to count the amount of miles he has clocked up over the years!

Pip tri's something epic Pip has run, cycled and swum her way through the past 3 years taking part in triathlons and half marathon events but her biggest challenge to date - a half iron man. She admits that while she has always loved the outdoors, supporting Julia’s House has definitely inspired her to take part in challenges she would never have considered previously. www.rockley.org
