FAMILY from the very beginning For more than a century, Father Ryan has fostered a culture of connection, belonging, and Irish pride. Our nationally recognized House System creates authentic relationships across grade levels while grounding students in our Catholic values and traditions. The House System forms smaller communities within a larger school to ensure that students are personally known and meaningfully engaged from day one. Each student is welcomed into one of six Houses honoring an important chapter in Father Ryan’s history. These intentional relationships are vital to our students’ character, faith formation, leadership development, and fun through the annual House Cup competition.
What happens in Mentor Group? Each incoming Father Ryan student is placed in one of six Houses and into one of seven smaller Mentor Groups within that House. Mentor Groups have 20-25 students from all grades and two to three faculty advisors, a true “family within a family.” Within Mentor Groups, students build friendships across grade levels while developing leadership skills through peer and adult mentorship, collaboration, faith, service, and spirited House competitions.

Father Ryan stands at the forefront of educational leadership and faith in action. First school in Tennessee to integrate in 1954 following Brown v. Frequently asked QUESTIONS
Do Father Ryan students receive college scholarships?
What do I do if my school or school system will not write recommendations?
Yes. The Class of 2026 received $35 million in scholarships.
In lieu of recommendations, we require a formal letter from the school stating their policy and a discipline report.
Does Father Ryan offer bus service to and from school? We offer three routes: Donelson/Hermitage route, a Murfreesboro route, and a Bellevue route. Seats on the buses are first come, first served and must be reserved; there is an additional fee for the bus. All families may use our carpool survey to arrange carpools. Many families connect on our parent Facebook page.
Does Father Ryan receive subsidies from the Diocese of Nashville? No. There is no direct financial contribution from the Diocese of Nashville to Father Ryan that subsidizes tuition. We also do not receive direct parish subsidies. Our funding model, like our peer private and parochial high schools in the region, comes from tuition and gifts of support from our alumni, parents, and community.
How safe is Father Ryan’s campus? Father Ryan puts safety first. In 2025, we installed secure iron-gate fencing around our campus perimeter with key card access and bulletproofing window protection on windows and doors. Our campus camera system has more than 130 security cameras, 75% of which are equipped with ZeroEyes AI gun detection technology for rapidthreat identification. We also upgraded all security lighting in 2025, and our full-time security staff is led by a former Metropolitan Nashville Police officer. Are all applicants required to interview? Yes. All applicants and at least one parent/guardian will have the opportunity to speak one-on-one with a member of our enrollment team. How important is the High School Placement Test (HSPT) and what does this test include? The HSPT administered at Father Ryan serves as the primary tool used by our academic team for level placement decisions. The exam covers five areas: verbal, language, reading, math skills, and quantitative math (math aptitude). With students enrolling from more than 57 different schools, each with its own unique curriculum, the HSPT provides the one consistent measure for objectively evaluating all incoming students. Father Ryan will consider Independent School Entrance Examination (ISEE) scores in lieu of the HSPT. Teacher recommendations, prior standardized test scores, and report cards also are reviewed to provide a more complete understanding of each student, but the HSPT holds the most significance in determining the best class placement for your student within Father Ryan’s academic program.

Does Father Ryan offer scholarships or accept outside scholarships? Yes. Father Ryan provides need-based and merit-based scholarships to students. Many of these scholarships are primarily available to upperclassmen, with the exception of Presidential Scholarships through the Hayes Scholars Program to the top five high school placement testers annually. Father Ryan also participates in two application-based scholarship programs available to families in Tennessee: the Tennessee Educational Savings Account (ESA) Program and the Tennessee Educational Freedom Scholarship (EFS) Program. Families may apply to both if they meet eligibility criteria. Visit fatherryan.org/ admissions/tuition-accessibility for detailed information. Are there any additional fees outside of tuition? Yes. Other fees include lunch, books, uniforms, laptops, athletic fees, class fees, or parking fees to allow for family choice and flexibility. Costs may vary by student and grade level. Does Father Ryan offer athletic scholarships? No. In accordance with the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) policy, all Tennessee private schools adhere to the same policies regarding student-athletes. All tuition assistance to studentathletes must be need-based. For a student-athlete to be eligible for tuition assistance, the family must first apply for tuition assistance.
