a Customized Education At Father Ryan, each journey is personal, and every possibility is within reach. We offer four levels of learning, available to all students: a robust College Preparatory level, Honors, High Honors, and Advanced Placement (AP).
How Personalized Learning Works I ndividualized Learning Paths: High schools typically place students on educational tracks. We guide you to craft a customized learning path that reflects your gifts, needs, passions, and goals. All four learning levels are available to freshmen, including one AP class, with approval. Hayes Scholars are selected by a committee of Father Ryan faculty and staff. All decisions are final. Families may inquire about submitting Independent School Entrance Examination (ISEE) scores. Applications are available on the Father Ryan Admissions Portal and will be accepted from December 11, 2026, through January 7, 2027. The Hayes Scholars who attain the five highest NP Composite scores will receive an annual $1,500 Presidential Merit Scholarship. Announcing Diploma of Distinction Pathways
Hayes Scholars and faculty traveled to Boston in summer 2026, visiting Boston College, Boston University, Harvard University, and Northeastern University, and enjoying a STEM activity at MIT. In summer 2025, Hayes Scholars toured Emory and Georgia Institute of Technology.
For incoming Hayes Scholars in the Class of 2031, Father Ryan has created a new Diploma of Distinction Pathway Program. During the second semester of freshman year, Hayes Scholars will choose one of three challenging coursework programs in the arts, humanities/global studies, or STEM. These pathways will help focus elective options and align with their intellectual interests. Father Ryan will use these pathways to guide opportunities in and outside of class for Hayes Scholars. Beginning in 2027-2028, members of the Class of 2030 may also select a pathway.

EXCHANGE Progams The world is waiting to change the way you see it. Since 2022, we have offered a monthlong exchange program with the Saint-Denis International School in Loches, France. Father Ryan French students live with a host family and attend a Frenchspeaking high school. Once home in Nashville, they welcome their French peers at Father Ryan, creating a reciprocal exchange grounded in lasting relationships and shared learning. In 2025, we launched our new exchange program with Xaverian High School in Brooklyn, N.Y. Open to juniors, students meet and connect with peers and form deep friendships. In February 2025, 10 juniors traveled to Brooklyn, attended Xaverian with their host students, and experienced high school life in New York City. This fall, those same students will welcome the 10 Xaverian students who hosted them to Nashville.

We have answers. What are Father Ryan’s four levels of learning?
College Preparatory, Honors, High Honors, and Advanced Placement (AP). All levels are rigorous and demanding. Students may move within levels throughout their four years at Father Ryan if they meet a minimum grade requirement and receive a teacher recommendation. Any movement is done in conversation with the Academic team. How do incoming students choose a personalized learning program? Based on performance on the High School Placement Test, other standardized testing, report card grades, and teacher recommendations, freshmen may be offered the opportunity to take College Preparatory, Honors, High Honors, and one AP class (AP Human Geography). When do families discuss a student’s strengths and challenges during the admissions process? Parents have several opportunities for conversation during the admissions process, including questions on the Support Application and the Pre-interview Questionnaire. In January and February, applicants and families participate in an indepth admissions interview to share more about each student’s strengths and needs. How does a student change a course level? Our thoughtful, intentional process includes a required teacher’s recommendation, a minimum grade, and permission from the teacher and from the student’s parents. What is Father Ryan’s College Counseling process? The College Counseling office works with each student and family through distinct grade-level programming, individual meetings for juniors and seniors, and robust digital resources to guide all students through the college admissions process. What is the difference between AP and International Baccalaureate curricula? Both Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) courses allow students to earn college credit by passing a standardized test and are generally considered to be the most challenging high school courses available.

AP curricula can offer a more personalized approach with flexibility, student choice, and a one-year course structure for each class. Students can take one or several courses based on their capacity, schedule, strengths, interests, and college goals.

Model IB curricula is a full, two-year diploma program with a significant time commitment. Students commit to the entire, prescribed set of six subjects across multiple disciplines that may or may not align with the student’s strengths or intended college major. How does Father Ryan support students academically and personally? Every Father Ryan teacher offers one-on-one help opportunities and tutoring programs. Our House System's Mentor Groups are another space where students are guided and supported by peers and faculty. Incoming students form relationships with sophomores, juniors, and seniors to help them navigate their first high school math test or look at schedules and course selection. Additionally, we have three full-time personal counselors and three full-time college counselors to help support students. Each incoming student is placed in a Freshman Seminar taught by faculty and staff or Transfer Seminar taught by Paul Davis ’81, Father Ryan President, and Ann Mullins ’03, Director of Athletics. These seminars help students navigate academics and all aspects of Father Ryan. How does Father Ryan’s faith-based mission connect with academics? As a Catholic school, our mission—to be an experience of the living Gospel while challenging students to reach their spiritual, academic, and personal potential—is visible in every class and aspect of Father Ryan. Every student takes a required Theology class each year, which is offered at one level to foster an inclusive culture of empathy and respect for peers of all academic abilities. We welcome students of all faiths to participate in our robust Campus Ministry program, and every student attends our monthly All-School Mass. All students also are invited to attend Daily Mass in the Chapel. We teach students why it is important to approach every subject with integrity, recognizing that a vital part of the learning process is making mistakes. That is why we create space for students to reflect, grow, and build resilience through their successes and their setbacks. When they graduate from Father Ryan, they have cultivated the qualities needed to support their success, not only in the classroom but throughout their life.
