Get to know veterans and spouses in your own company. Ask about their experiences. Invite them to a breakfast or team meeting to discuss your interest in hiring more veterans and spouses. Ask them to help. Go to a military function open to the public (such as a deployment ceremony, a homecoming or a family support group meeting), and introduce yourself to veterans and spouses Learn about the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA), the law governing employers’ relationships with military employees Download the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ “Guide to Hiring Veterans” for your HR or recruiting team Download the comprehensive veteran hiring report produced by the Institute for Veterans and Military Families (IVMF) at Syracuse University Read more about the business case for hiring veterans in the IVMF’s white paper Consult with your accountant or tax attorney about the various financial incentives available for training and hiring veterans
Read the Military 101 primer produced by JPMorgan Chase for more information on the service branches and their structure Use O*NET OnLine to search for military job codes and get a description of what a military job entails Reach out to veteran employees in your company to help you translate military resumes Research what types of training veterans might have received in specific military jobs that pertain to your business Take the VA primer on military cultural competence Educate nonveteran employees on military culture Train your staff on laws related to veteran employees Use information sessions to educate your workplace on issues such as post-traumatic stress disorder and disability issues and rights
