The holiday season is here! I'm not going to bore you with a sermon about giving is more important than receiving. We're bikers. We give selflessly all year long. We give our money, time, and of ourselves. It's part of the biker culture. I would like to remind you to please support our advertisers. Print magazines have been feeling the crunch for years. The delicate balance of print and electronic delivery changes daily. If not for the businesses who advertise with us, many since the very first issue, we would not exist. To them we say "thank you." Your support is always appreciated. Finally, please remember our grandchildren, Harley and Davidson, in your prayers. In fact, please remember all those who made the courageous decision to serve in our military both present and past. We are so proud of you! Have a happy, healthy and safe holiday.

Best Halloween Costume! Is that Buzz DeBiker? Nope, it’s our young friend Clay McConnaughy, son of our very first Two Wheel Wedding couple, Brittany and Cale McConnaughy. The FLBD family continues to grow!!

ABATE OF DELAWARE Ed Berner, Legislative Coordinator

Season’s greetings! While there is nothing currently on our radar here in the state of Delaware, it’s time to focus on our beloved rides. I always hope for decent weather during the winter, but the fact is most of us don’t ride as much or at all when the temperatures drop. What I have done at the end of every riding season is a complete service of the bike before I put it down for the winter. The number one issue that must be addressed is the fuel. It is almost impossible to empty all of the fuel from your bike, there is always old fuel somewhere in any fuel system. Straight gasoline starts to deteriorate around 30-60 days and ethanol blended fuels break down even faster. Ethanol will also absorb water. The ethanol and water mix in E10 gasoline is a breeding ground for microbes like bacteria and fungi causes corrosion and debris in your fuel system. Adding a fuel stabilizer will extend the time you can store fuel and minimize water. These can be purchase at any auto parts store or your local dealer. Every motorcycle dealer has their recommended brand, STA-BIL or Amsoil are among some of the top sellers. Personally, I use Startron. Be sure to run the engine to cycle the stabilized fuel through the entire system. I check the tires and make sure they have the proper air pressure. I also check the condition and change them if they can’t make it through the next riding season. This way I’m not worried about how long it will take or if the tires are out of stock. I’m losing riding time this time of year. While the wheels are off I check the brakes. I also change the oil and filter and put in a new set of plugs for good measure. I go over the bike and look for anything that may need to be fixed or replaced. Better to fix it now than have to do it before I can ride later. I give the bike one last bath and a coat of wax. Lastly, I do any upgrades or changes to the bike before tucking it away in a quiet corner, covered and hooked up to a battery tender. Everyone has their own way of winterizing their babies and this is what I have always done since the mid-70’s (back then it also included wheel bearings and push rods). Visit www.abateofde.com for up-to-date information and to support your rights as a Delaware motorcyclist!

1) How long have you been involved with your business/occupation? I started out as an amateur desktop publisher which led me into officially starting my own business in 1995. 2) What exactly do you do in that capacity? Well, if you had asked my kids that question 10 years ago, they would’ve told you I color for a living! I’m the layout/ design department for a handful of publications which means that I design the ads, I layout the stories. It’s like working on a big puzzle, making all the pieces fit. 3) Where were you born? Philadelphia, PA 4) Where do you currently reside and for how long? Greentown, PA since December 3rd, 1987. I moved from the suburbs of Philly to the beautiful Pocono Mountains. 5) What do you like/admire most about yourself? If nothing else, I’m brutally honest. 6) What is the one thing you would change about yourself? Wow, there’s actually a list but, for all intents and purposes, I’m happy with me. A little too bitchy but, hey, postmenopausal babe! We’re good! ;) 7) What would you consider your greatest extravagance? Extravagance, yeah, not so much. Both of our boys who are 14 months apart in age just started college. So, extravagance isn’t on the menu quite yet. 8) Who is your fictional hero? Dean Winchester. (If you know... You KNOW.) 10) Who do you consider your real-life hero? My husband, Ben. 11) What is the most awesome thing you own? My 2014 BMW x1. I always wanted a ‘Beemer’ now I have one! She was worth the wait!! 12) What is the question you are most often asked (and what is the answer you give)? Q: Are you nuts? A: Yes, I am and my husband appreciates that. 13) What would you do if you were able to retire? Travel. I’ve already got my next camper picked out, a little bigger, way nicer bathroom, the kids can join us when they can. As soon as my husband retires (he’s 8 years younger than me, whoop, whoop) our first trip will be out to the Grand Canyon and Yellowstone. My bff and I did a cross-country trip from Palm Desert CA to home about 5 years ago to bring a car back and we just touched the edge of the Canyon and it was AMAZING! I can’t wait to show it to my husband.

Everyday Heroes Kelly Rhoads York • PA Since her college days in the mid-80s, Kelly Rhoads always seemed to be involved with charity causes in one way or another. It began with annual MS Walks to show support for her cousin, Artie. When she purchased her first Harley in 1999 and joined the motorcycle community, charity events, of course, were part of the culture. But when her dad lost his battle with colorectal cancer in 2007, Kelly became more focused on cancer charities. One year later, she organized and hosted the first Hawgs & Heineys Poker Run & Pig Roast event.

Photograph Courtesy of JDub Photography

Hawgs & Hineys is a typical five-stop poker run, but ended with a motorcycle rodeo in Kelly’s back yard. It included a pig roast, silent auction, raffles and a DJ. “Hawgs for Harleys and Heineys” was coined to bring awareness to colorectal cancers and encourage preventative screening. Kelly’s first event consisted of a modest group of less than 40 participants but she still managed to raise a couple thousand dollars. She continued the event for five years, raising $20,000 for local cancer charities and local cancer families in need. The final event in 2012 hosted more than 100 participants and grew to include live bands and fireworks. Since her father’s passing in 2007, Kelly has lost numerous friends and family to cancer. This added fuel to her fire, and her passion to support those fighting the battle grew. In 2016, and after the passing of her friend, Tammy Bennet, Kelly resurrected the retired event and changed the name to the Fxck Cancer Bike Run & Rodeo. The new, bold, ferocious name was how Kelly felt. “It’s still a poker run, motorcycle rodeo, auction and raffle event,” explains Kelly, “but honestly, I am so sick of cancer destroying lives, I had to change the name! Fxck Cancer!” The event raised over $8,000 and the proceeds were donated to the York Cancer Patient Help Fund, Hospice of Central PA, and to help support Ayden Koller (a 10-year-old with DIPG), Daphne Williams (ovarian cancer), Steve Danley (thymoma cancer) and Teresa Heininger (colon cancer). “I’m sad to say, those four wonderful humans have passed, but they are not forgotten.”

Kelly is planning the next event which will be in memory of her cousin, Jessica Bechtel, who passed in June, 2017, from metastatic melanoma, and Daphne, who lost her battle with ovarian cancer in September. When she’s not planning, organizing or participating in events, Kelly does a lot of cooking for families who are overwhelmed by the physical and emotional burdens that come with battling cancer. She currently cooks for two families on a regular basis but as needs change, so do the people she feeds. “I wish no one needed me,” says Kelly, “but as long a cancer affects friends and family, my “kitchen fulla love” will be open, and I will deliver meals on wheels.”

NC State Fair Good Motorcycle Morning! It has been about 15 years since I’ve visited the NC State Fair. The last time I was there my boy was only 2 years old. Back with Marty Sullivan then, we spent a few hours riding gentle kid size rides, had a little fair food, and went home. To tell you the truth, it was a good family outing, but I had no desire to return. Fast forward to 2017, my boy is now 17 years old. Now that he’s almost grown, I’m doing as many things as I can do with him as it may very well be my last chance before he flies the coop. It just so happens we had the day off, and it was the last day of the fair, let’s go! Off we go to the last day of the 150th instance of the North Carolina State Fair. Now I don’t know if the fair was as awesome 15 years ago as I was focused on a 2-year-old at the time, but man, this time, IT WAS AWESOME! Maybe you don’t think so. Maybe you think your fair is better. Maybe it is, but let me just tell you all the stuff we got into at the fair. Strap in…It’s a lot…here we go! We spent 13 hours at the fair, 8am-11pm. We witnessed a robot competition, a cow competition, and a cooking competition. There were many more contests that we didn’t make it to like the biggest pumpkin, best flowers, etc. We saw a BMX/Motorcycle stunt show. The highlight of the show was a double back flip from the BMX bikes and a 75 ft., one-handon-the-motorcycle, superman pose’ jump by the motorcycles! We rode many adult rides, and did not puke ☺. We watched a pretty comprehensive circus act that included a man riding a 25-ft. tall unicycle, yes 25 ft. He climbed a rope ladder to get to the top of his unicycle, let go, and rode, wow! We ate a lot of fair food, and did not puke ☺. We saw a monster truck break an axle on his first jump. We saw a multitude of cars bash the crap out of each other during a demolition derby. There were ninjas breaking boards, and bricks, and being all ninja-like. These boys were true ninjas though, not just a karate act. I know this because they totally stole a lighter from a man, sitting in the audience, without him even realizing until the end of the act. We participated in a strong man act in which the strong man, John Beatty, did many amazing things including lifting 600 lbs. worth of kids that were sitting on a 200-lb. bench. Awesome! We watched a pig named “Squealing Dale Earnhardt” race his buddies. We chilled out and took in a very entertaining laser light show on the banks of the fairgrounds lake, while enjoying some of the best homemade vanilla ice cream and kettle corn in existence, and we did not puke ☺. We rode the NC State Fair Flyer, which a ski slope style chair lift that takes you on a relaxing ride from one end of the fairground to the other. We watched an amazing Chinese acrobat act where the highlight was an 80-lb. girl, lying on her back, juggling and spinning a 150-lb. table with her feet. This was super dangerous for her, a 150-lb. hardwood table with 4 tapered legs spinning

and flipping all over the place. There were 2 strong men standing close by, ready to rescue her at a moment’s notice, and flinching every time it looked like it was going to go bad. But, no, she pulled it off, and when she did the crowd erupted with applause and cheers like I’ve never heard before. Very Inspiring. It was 10pm by now and there were still people coming in the gates. Do you know why? Because it was the last hour, of the last day, of the fair. And do you know what happens while the rides are shutting down, and the food vendors are trying to sell the last 100 or so Turkey legs on offer, at the last hour, of the last day, of the fair? Fireworks! Yes, there were still people paying to park, paying to enter, at 10pm, just to get a good vantage point for one of the best displays of fireworks that I’ve ever seen. And that my friends, is why maybe, just maybe, the NC State Fair is one of the best around. But you don’t have to take my word for it. I made a video ☺ - www. youtube.com/sightw Merry Christmas from everyone at Good Motorcycle Morning ;-)

Jenn Jenn Smith Clearfield County•PA Jenn Jenn Smith (her nickname because her brain works like a Tom Tom GPS when it comes to directions) has been riding since was 8 or 9 years old. She is now 50. Jenn Jenn’s father taught her how to (virtually) work the clutch, brakes and throttle on a couch over the course of a winter. When spring arrived, she was riding her first bike around the yard. By summer, her father decided she was good enough to ride on trails with friends. She seemed to always have a motorcycle after that. Jenn Jenn’s first bike was a Candy Green ‘72 Honda CT70 followed by a Hodaka Combat Wombat and a Super Rat, a ’72 Honda XL250, a Honda Rebel, and her current rides:’72 Kawasaki F7 175 (which is being restored as she finds parts), ‘79 TS185 Suzuki, an ’85 Kawasaki KLR 250, ’06 Kawasaki Vulcan 500. ‘01 Honda Rebel, ’94 Honda XR200r, a 50cc wee pit bike, and last but not least, a Yamaha ’01 TTR250. Jenn Jenn does as much of the maintenance as possible on her own, leaving anything that seems tough to her local bike shops. This past spring, Jenn Jenn joined the American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association (“AHRMA”) after her first three races. She is the only woman in the region as well as the only woman in her class. She is also a member of ABATE because she feels the organization is important for bikers. Jenn Jenn rode solo on her Rebel through Death Valley, California. She enjoys highways and bi-ways but prefers trails and woods. “You get a great work out, and it’s a challenge to see if you can climb hills, or lull

She dealt cards and roulette in Las Vegas, Reno and Lake Tahoe. After leaving the casinos, she went to work at a gold mine in central Nevada as a pipe fitter, and running heavy equipment. She is currently in the IT field. Her hobbies include riding and working on motorcycles, bicycling, shooting pool, fishing, target shooting, roasting raw coffee beans, cooking, gardening (and canning what she harvests), woodworking, traveling, camping, hiking, and flying. Jenn Jenn recently purchased two Vintage Ross Pro 10-speed bikes and restored them. “I’ve always been a “hands on” type of person. I like fixing things. Maybe that is what my Dad saw in me as a kid. He was kind and giving person. I do my best to carry those traits with me.” Jenn Jenn currently resides in Clearfield County, PA.
