Henry Kohl Senior Moments

• Ephrata, PA • 79 Years Old

Henry Kohl began riding in 1950 when he was just 15 years old. His bike was a 1937 74 Harley-Davidson and back then you didn’t need a motorcycle license – you just rode! Henry has owned several bikes over the years and one of his more memorable rides was a 1947 Indian Chief. It had unique styling and lots of power. He currently rides a 2001 Illusion Red Honda Goldwing that is triked with a conversion purchased at Leola Motortrike. He gradually added accessories and now has close to $60,000 invested.

Henry started with a bare trike then added just about every kind of accent lighting and chrome on the market. He then topped it off with airbrushed murals and pinstriping. In a not-so-typical move, he added low profile tires. In order to keep the same width and height of the stock wheel so his odometer readings would be accurate, he added Foose wheels along with the low profile tires. Not satisfied with the way the brake rotors were visible, he had custom machine-polished stainless steel discs between the wheel and brake rotors. The steel is polished to a mirror finish so, at first glance, it appears you are looking through the spokes of the wheel and seeing the ground. Henry regularly enters his trike in bike shows and one of his most memorable victories is winning first place in Motortrike’s National On-Line Trike Show contest held on Facebook in 2013. Henry is a widower and when his wife passed away, he began utilizing his trike as a sort of therapy – as a way to meet friends and socialize. It was during a bike show that a woman who had been admiring Henry’s trike asked if he would take her for a ride around the block. That short ride turned into a wonderful relationship and he and the woman, Jody, have been dating and riding since. Henry and Jody participate in many charitable rides but mostly enjoy the beautiful surrounding Lancaster County farmland and quiet country back roads. When asked what advice he would impart for new riders, Henry is quick to respond. “Wear a helmet. Period. I can’t stress that enough,” he says. “Second, keep your eyes on the road and ride with heightened awareness of motorists around you.”

Everyday Heroes A ugus t e V i ct oria R eay Submitted by Eddie Kiplinger

“The sense of flying, being able to smell the fresh mountain air while effortlessly cranking down on the throttle is such a beautiful thing,” says 20-year-old Auguste Victoria Reay of Lovingston, VA. She believes no matter if it’s rain, snow, hail, or shine, a true biker always prevails. Auguste has been riding since the age of 15 and her fist bike was a 1977 1200 Harley Davidson Superglide. She admits it was a little big but when your father believes you can do it, what else is left? She got up on that V-twin and she rode it until the day of her high school graduation. That’s when her father presented her with a 2005 Buell XB9R Firebolt with matching flowers on the air box filter and plates that said “AugVic.” Ever since then, Auguste has been learning tricks, racing, modeling, and putting her “Bumble Bee” in bike shows. It’s her goal to show people that girls can ride and that Buells are Harleys. Auguste’s dedication to riding and being a role model for young girls who want to go full throttle in all they want to achieve is why we selected her as our Everyday Hero.

Nationwide …… are they really on your side? We have all heard the cute jingles from the insurance companies, they all have them, but a recent case just handed down by a Berks County Judge speaks volumes as to how this Nationwide actually treats its insureds. It all started back in 1996 when the Berg’s, who were insured with Nationwide, were involved in an automobile accident. They brought their Jeep Cherokee to a Nationwide approved body shop and were told it was totaled to the tune of over $25,000.00. However, in spite of being told that the “whole body was twisted”, Nationwide sought another opinion and received an estimate for less that half of the $25,000.00 and insisted that the vehicle be repaired. Just imagine if they were responsible for repairing your motorcycle, which happens all of the time, unless you

his opinion “Nationwide’s actions in this case showed, reckless indifference to its own insured when it permitted the Jeep to be repaired and returned to the Berg’s to be driven on public roads.” He further added that Nationwide was willing to risk their insureds lives to save itself money on the collision claim. Once the Berg’s found out what happened they contacted a lawyer and sued Nationwide. The case went on until just recently when Judge Sprecher awarded $18 million in punitive damages to the Berg’s and an additional $3 million to their attorney’s as fees. Unfortunately, Mrs. Berg passed away from cancer at the age of 62 this past April never knowing the outcome of her case.

Can you imagine how they would treat you if you had purchased collision coverage made a motorcycle accident claim against them? from your own insurer. As always, if upon reading this material you have Berks County any questions regarding this topic or any others, Judge Sprecher please feel free to contact me at LeeGaber@ wrote in cycleattorney.com or 1-888-CYCLE-LAW (1-888292-5352).

HUB CITY BIKE WEEK Hagerstown, MD • July 3rd thru 6th

by Julie Kline

When Thursday, July 3rd arrived, I found myself with the rest if the FLBD crew (including local rockers Poverty Ridge and resident pirate Capt. Mango) attending the amazing AYCE Crab Feed. The menu featured chicken, Maryland crab soup, cole slaw and, of course, crabs! If you were still hungry when you walked away from this crab feed there was something seriously wrong with you. The crabs came out the kitchen quicker than you could eat them - no shortage of food here! I only stopped picking crabs long enough to play the Tip Jars (they make me happy - one of my guilty pleasures) but stopped while I was ahead this night). Owner Brian Marquiss and his staff took excellent care of everyone. While diners picked at crabs and sucked down beer and soft drinks, Poverty Ridge played from the time the feast began until it was time to leave. There couldn’t have been a more satisfying, relaxing, entertaining evening. On Friday, July 4th, BigPoppa and Miss Caroline manned the sign-in table at Twigg Cycles, sponsor of the Lighted Bike Parade and led the convoy down Dual Highway. I stationed myself at the finish point, Creekside Deck Bar, just in time to watch participants roar into the parking lot and I have to say some of lighted bikes were jaw-dropping beautiful. The FLBD crew was together again in one place with the The Sassy Girls Dance Team performing and Captain Mango making his appearance and posing for photo ops. J Factor rocked a packed deck and everyone chowed down on Creekside’s infamous cheeseburgers and fries. All I can say is: Diet? What diet? IT’S HUB CITY BIKE WEEK!! Rockin’ music, great friends and area fireworks everywhere you looked - what an awesome show! I can’t say enough about Creekside owner Lisa and her highly professional staff who kept everyone fed and the drinks flowing. GREAT JOB!! Saturday, July 5th, started at Ed's Third Base Tavern for their 4th Annual Food Bank "CAN" Benefit Run. Ed provided shirts to all who participated and fed everyone when they returned. What a great way to support the community you live in, Ed!! After the ride left Third Base, I rode out to Thunder Road Bar with friends for a crab cake lunch. I have to mention staff member Holly who took very good care of us. There was much to see and do at Thunder Road including vendors and music ALL day. I met up with the rest of FLBD crew for dinner at the Fireside Restaurant at the Ramada. By the way, this was a great place to stay as well as eat. The rooms were large and clean and the service was great. The restaurant had a diverse menu with something to satisfy everyone. After dinner we worked our way to the Hagerstown Speedway for the AMA races. This was a first for me and all I can say is that I am definitely hooked! The men and woman racing that day had some MAD skills. When we left the races we returned to Thunder Road Bar for some evening entertainment – those who attempted the mechanical bull and watching and music by Funny Money. Jason, Cindy and their staff were their typical amazing and there was something for everyone. We hope everyone is on board for Hub City Bike Week in 2015. As we continue to grow we all just keep getting bigger and better. See you all next year!

AHRMA Road Racing also features “modern” alternative classes for single, twin, and three-cylinder machines. Fast Lane Biker Magazine Delmarva was pleased to be invited to attend and our racing expert, down-on-the-track photographer, Steve Vreatt of Xtreme Motorsports Photography, took some spectacular shots. HANNUM’S DAY AT CECIL COUNTY DRAGS On Sunday, June 22nd, Fast Lane Biker Magazine Delmarva was pleased to be a guest at Hannum’s Harley-Davidson’s 60th Anniversary Party. The celebration was marked by local motorcycle racing at the Cecil County Dragway in Rising Sun, MD. This is grass roots motorcycle drag racing at its finest. The event was a huge success and we can’t wait to attend again in 2015. The Hannum’s HarleyDavidson family wishes to thank all the participants and everyone who came out to support the event. Uncle Willy’s • Rising Sun, MD Too hot and muggy for you? Well I’m no doctor but I know one sure-fire cure to beat the heat. Hop on your bike, blast down the highway and find a place that serves ice cold beverages. This month I’ve been out as much as possible. The AC is non-existing in the garage so I’ve been sweating my ass off every day at work. When i do soak up some of the fabricated cold air it only makes me tired. Hopping on the bike and riding works best for me. That being said, I managed to ride down Rt. 273 to a nice little bar in Rising Sun, MD called Uncle Willy’s, one of those hole-in-the-wall places that I love to discover. This small hole-in-the-wall has some damn good food, great service, strong drinks, and wasn’t overly busy. One of my pet peeves is finding a bar that has great food and strong drinks but takes 20 minutes to order. When I walked into Uncle Willy’s I was greeted by a few locals who promptly gave me the head nod letting me know I was welcome. That little reassurance is always a good thing when walking into a bar in a small town because, let’s face it, some places don’t like “outsiders” finding their watering hole. I took my place at the bar and surveyed the room. Car artifacts lined the walls as well as a dart board, KENO TV, and plasma TV for patron viewing. A small dining area was located off to one side and a larger room in the back accommodated bands and such. I was greeted by a friendly bartender and asked for a crown and coke and a menu. I was handed a lined sheet of paper listing the daily specials, written in pen. I knew this was my kind of place. I didn’t care what the prices were, but I knew

they had to be reasonable. Any place that hands you specials on handwritten, lined paper had to be good. They obviously don’t waste time and money on fancy print but chose to save the money for good food and to keep prices low for their customers. I found out that is exactly how this place works. I ordered the 6 wings on special for 1/2 price as a starter and decided on the grilled chicken sandwich as my dinner. The wings were huge, cooked just right and smothered in a spicy hot sauce. Honestly, these were some of the biggest wings I have seen in forever. My chicken sandwich was served on a Kaiser roll with juicy chicken, melted cheese, bacon, barbeque sauce and served with a side of crispy fries. I could barely finish my meal after the wings and fries but I forged ahead and finished my sandwich. I enjoyed probably one drink too many but I was enjoying the conversation and friendly bar service. Uncle Willy’s is a great place and I haven’t had such an all-around good experience in a long time. Most venues I stumble upon are good but this had that great hometown feel and the people were genuine and not looking for a big tip. The food was tasty, drinks were stiff, and staff was extremely nice. If you have a chance, or even if you don’t have a chance, make time to stop into Uncle Willy’s in Rising Sun, MD. I can honestly say you won’t be disappointed. I personally plan to make this one of my usual Maryland stops from this point forward. Uncle Willy’s is located at 325 W. Main Street, Rising Sun, MD. You can also find them on Facebook for specials and upcoming events. Be sure to tell them Fast Lane Biker Magazine sent you! Until next time, remember, it’s just another day in paradise.

by Michelle Holcomb, Executive Director United we stand. On Saturday, July 12th, we had proof of that. This was the day the Coalition of Clubs (“COC) launched their first major event and was fantastic. As a result of the hard work and joint effort of the coalition and the committee formed to organize this event, there were a minimum of 400 attendees and more than 30 clubs were represented from across the state. There were also a few clubs from out of state. The VFW post 467 in Westminster could not have supported us better. They provided food and alcohol and did a fine job considering the number of attendees and we wish to thank them for their hospitality. This event is an excellent example of what can happen when motorcyclists unite to stand up for their rights. ABATE is very proud to have been a part of this history-making event. Thank you to everyone who came out to support the COC. During the COC event, several attendees asked why this is happening now and why it never happened in the past. I, personally, believe it is the result of what is transpiring across our country and the rest of the world. Our rights in general are being impinged upon, and removed from us, as citizens stand by and do nothing to stop it. Bikers are not typically

known to stand by and do nothing and I believe they are fed up. It is time to stand as one and take care of business. This event proved just how powerful we can be when every biker in the country stands together. If we come together on such short notice and organize such a powerful event, just think what we can do with time. We have all agreed that it is time to unite and battle issues such as profiling and motorcycle-only checkpoints. We see the potential for great things to happen in the future as a result of that united front. We are proud to be bikers and to have the opportunity to work with so many dedicated, enthusiastic clubs. Unfortunately, as with all positives there comes negatives. We have had people criticize us for working with the clubs. People who we thought were on our side; people who stood on the sidelines and waited for the clubs to come to us instead of reaching out to them. We are happy to have a solid relationship with such a variety of clubs around the country and will never apologize for it. It is the best thing ABATE of Maryland has done in a long time. We are a motorcycle rights organization and that is what we do. We defend all motorcyclists, including clubs. The type of club does not make a difference. Yes, great things are about to happen.
