Anne Marie Padilla, Teacher As members of the Tam Valley Student Council, we work to unite our school. Student Council organizes and carries out school activities such as spirit Fridays; which includes getting the school together to play fun games with students and staff. Our goal is to make students feel happy and welcome on campus. In addition to planning events that contribute to school spirit, the student council is the voice of the whole school. They come to meetings sharing out things that are for the betterment of our school community and develop plans to make things better.

very fall, anticipation flows through the veins of Golden Gate Park as stages are built and posters go up for the Outside Lands Music Festival. A San Francisco tradition since 2008, the threeday festival welcomes a plethora of world class talents, musical and otherwise. Friends gather from all over to see exceptional artists. The lineup this year was no exception with headliners like Tyler, the Creator, Lizzo, The Strokes, Vampire Weekend, and JPEGMAFIA, just to name a few. After missing a year due to COVID, everyone went full out, including the thousands of fans who came in costume to celebrate music, a return to normalcy, and Halloween.

Although we had heard it for months, as tens of thousands of people grooved as one, it struck a deeper chord. We were all in this together.
If you’re like us, you probably haven’t left the house much over the past year and a half. Personally, gathering with people outside of our family still feels abnormal, much less spending time in large crowds of strangers.

Throughout COVID, we all wondered when life would return to normal. When would we do the kinds of things we used to, like hanging out with non-family members indoors? Or going to a concert?
Seven hours flew by in what felt like minutes. The sun must have set sometime in between, but it was impossible to tell with all the vibrant flashing lights that lit up every stage in the park. The stages were a marvel themselves: colossal platforms adorned with neon lights, displaying “Outside Lands” in letters big enough for all the world to see.
So when things in the Bay Area started to look a little less like the end of the world, we thought it was time to break away from binge-watching vampire dramas to go see some live music. In the biggest way possible — that is, with 200,000 or so fellow concert-goers who were also ready to cut loose at Outside Lands, the annual three-day event that takes place in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park.
Not only had four massive stages been dragged into the middle of the park, but it seemed every food truck in the entire San Francisco Bay area made an appearance. From avocado chocolate pudding to miso ramen burgers, the event featured San Francisco’s finest and weirdest, offering a truly unique dining experience that was emblematic of the Bay area (which is to say, meager portions for high prices).
Inside the sprawling event space, there were people everywhere. And we mean everywhere. Simply moving around the park from one stage to another required expert-level maneuvering — a skill which
But of course, we had really come for the music. While many in attendance had come to see headliners like Tyler the Creator and Lizzo, every performing artist brought something unique to the party.
Music of every genre could be heard — from R&B, to soul, to pop, Western, and Country Rock. You name it. The choices were endless, making it hard to decide which performance to attend. We were blown away by Soul Rebel, an eight-piece New Orleans-based brass ensemble who incorporate soul, jazz, funk, hip-hop, rock and pop into their music. The performer who really stole the show was Tyler the Creator. Hours before his show was even supposed to start, thousands and thousands of people began to gather, in anxious anticipation of his arrival. As we drew nearer to the projected start time, a dense crowd started to form, stretching back as far as the eye could see. When Tyler finally came on stage, the crowd went wild. Swarms of people surged forward, desperately trying to push their way to the front in the hopes of perhaps sharing an intimate moment of eye contact with the iconic superstar. To top everything off, a giant yacht surfaced from the floor of the stage, swaying up and down with Tyler riding on deck. Fireworks and rain were set off in the background. The mosh pit was in a frenzy. The hour-long show seemed to last only a matter of minutes. By the end, everyone was dancing, yelling, and swaying to the rhythm of the music. Although we had heard it for months, as tens of thousands of people grooved as one, it struck a deeper chord. We were all in this together.

In Student Council it is important to listen to others. Taking action and helping our school is important to us. It makes us feel we make a difference.
