Fastener + Fixing Technology Over the last three months the major talking point within the Indian fastener market has to have been the hectic two days at Fastener Fair India.

F

astener + Fixing Technology Magazine had a stand at the show and both Jamie Mitchell, group publishing director, and Phil Matten, executive editor, reported that they have never seen a show so busy. In this issue there is a full report from Fastener Fair India and the co-located BLECH India exhibition. We have also Will Lowry invited exhibitors to send us their thoughts on the shows.

Editor Also included in this issue is a technical article from Dr. Bill Eccles focussing on ‘self-loosening of threaded fasteners’. The article concentrates on the causes of self-loosening and what steps can be taken to help prevent loosening. Rivit establishes subsidiary in India Rivit Srl, based in Bologna, Italy, has added another milestone to its journey by setting up the subsidiary Rivit India Fasteners Pvt. Ltd.

ivit India Fasteners Pvt. Ltd operates with its own sales offices and technical services which are available to all sheet metal working companies: automotive, transport (buses, trucks, trains and ships), electrical appliances and electronics, as well as the channel of dealers and distributors.

Constantly supplied by Rivit Italy, the subsidiary has a large warehouse full of products in stock, in particular fastening systems, tools for their installation and related spare parts.

Rivit India points out that its staff can provide professional technical assistance on the use of all products, with the primary aim of always offering the best solutions to any customer need,

on the basis of the strong experience and training provided by the Rivit Srl head office. Good after sales assistance and a competent service for the repair of the tools complete the range of services offered by Rivit.

Innovative anti-removal system In light of the constantly developing industrial expertise in every sector of industry the need to protect what are often highly sensitive applications from unauthorised use is becoming of ever greater importance.

O

ne example is in the regenerative energy sector, where solar modules have to be protected against theft and intelligent fastening mechanisms are required to guarantee operational safety.

For many years such applications have been secured using a special kind of fastener. Many methods exist, from the breakaway screw and nut, safety drives which can be removed only with a special screw wrench, to small steel balls inserted into the screw drive, all of which produce variable practical results.

Arnold Umformtechnik, based in Germany, believes that there is a need for optimisation, particularly as regards to removal protection security and processing speed improvement, which is why it is offering the LocTec ® screw drive as an alternative to the systems used up to now.

The LocTec® is a special combination of screw drive and tool, meaning that a fastener can be removed only with the aid of the tool and then only by destroying the connection itself. The drive incorporated into the screw head means that the fastener can only be screwed in using a screwdriver tool adapted specifically to the fastener.

Whilst there are countless such combinations in the industry, Arnold point out that the LocTec ® drive’s flank position makes it impossible to remove the fastener, even using the special tool which was used to fit it in the first place. Any attempt to do so simply causes the screwdriver to screw itself out of the screw head. The joint can only be taken apart by mechanically drilling the screw or by milling a groove and both these ways will inevitably invalidate any warranty claims, and any potential thief would be put off by the considerable amount of noise the procedure would make.

Arnold highlights that with the LocTec ® system it is not necessary to make any changes to the fastening machinery, the screw position or the process technology, and the system can be supplied in individually customisable designs and is available for all standard screw and nut types.

Lesjöfors moves into the fast lane In close cooperation with Öhlins racing, Lesjöfors has designed innovative chassis springs to the dampers of the newly released Lamborghini Aventador.

L

amborghini Aventador is a brand new sports car model characterised by modern design and lightweight technology. The 6.5 litre V12 motor gives an effect of 700bhp and the Aventador achieves 0-100km/h in 2.9 seconds. Top speed is 350km/h and the price estimates to about 3 million SEK (324,000 euros).

Innovative chassis springs for dampers

The chassis springs give the car good driving qualities at the same time as they manage the loads that are transferred from the wheels into the car. The Aventador also has a new type of lifting system for levelling of the front of the car that puts extra demands on the springs. Lesjöfors has in a close cooperation with Öhlins Racing designed two types of springs with different rigidity, one front spring and one back spring, that live up to the Volkswagen Group´s high demands for the Aventador´s shock absorption system.

In the coil over dampers used in the Aventador, the springs are placed on the outside of the damper. The spring is an open,

uncut spring with an unusual end fitting. A shim in rubber is placed between the spring and the spring seat to avoid noise. Manufacturing is carried out at the factory in Lesjöfors, Sweden.

Cooperation with extreme demands

A comprehensive 28 page demand specification was the base for design and testing of the chassis springs. Construction and testing were carried out during 2.5 years in close teamwork with Öhlins. Among others, wide-ranging tests to verify the springs fatigue strength and the corrosion resistance of the surface treatment were carried out. At some stages, extreme short manufacturing processes and deliveries were required, with Lesjöfors living up to the high standards.

“We are highly satisfied with our cooperation with Lesjöfors.

Huntsman drives sustainability

Working in partnership with Huntsman Advanced Materials, the National Institute of Applied Science and Paul Sabatier University have designed and manufactured a lightweight, energy efficient vehicle.

T

he TIM 05 demonstrates the possibilities of making a vehicle using environmentally sustainable components, weighing just 27kg and running on bio-ethanol fuel. To maximise its performance and achieve the best power-to-weight ratio, the students and professors involved in the project decided to use composite materials in designing the TIM 05.

The body, made of a sandwich of polystyrene and silk reinforced with carbon, and the chassis, made from unidirectional carbon and foam laminate are laminated by hand lay-up process with Araldite ® LY 5052/Aradur ® 5052.

Huntsman highlights that this low viscosity epoxy resin was selected for its easy handling behaviour and excellent mechanical and dynamic properties in the production of laminates. Araldite ® 2011, a two component epoxy adhesive has also been used to bond many other details on the vehicle.

Electronics light the way India’s economy has been booming leading to growth in a wide range of industry sectors.

As a result India has become an exciting innovative marketplace for fastenings.

Jeremy Scholefield, director of strategic business – electronics sector, TR Fastenings, explains.

espite the recent rise in inflation, India offers great business opportunities.

Asia’s third largest economy still has sound growth, favourable demographics and domestic demand, with a huge population of an estimated 1.2 billion to satisfy. Over the last ten years India’s economy has been booming, much of this may be attributed to India’s reputation as an information technology superpower but the country also has a long tradition of manufacturing.

At the end of June the Indian government’s confidence in its electronics market was illustrated with news of subsidies for the sector. At a strategic electronics summit organised by the Electronic Industries Association of India (ELCINA), Ajay Kumar, joint secretary in the department of information technology, revealed that the Indian central government has proposed to give one trillion Rupees of investment subsidies to significantly boost the country’s electronics industry. This

incentive is set to generate four trillion Rupees of investment in the sector and also create 20 million jobs over the next ten years.

This confidence is also shared by large multinational electronics manufacturers with major firms setting up in India after recognising the massive growth in the healthcare, lighting and lifestyle sectors.

This migration of manufacturers to India has created a demand for reliable, quality components. These global firms need

From humble beginnings, offering just clinch nuts, stand-offs and studs, the TR Hank Self Clinch range now has an annual turnover of £10 million, including 750 different parts and is sold to numerous customers, both large and small.

• Concealed head studs and standoffs – Idea for applications where a totally smooth and hidden finish is required.

• Aluminium nuts and studs – expanding on the standard steel and stainless steel ranges.

• Hardened stainless steel nuts, studs and standoffs – to be used when installing into stainless steel plate.

• Low displacement studs – can be inserted as near as 2.8mm to the edge of sheet metal.

In total, there will be a 35% increase in the number of self clinch products that will be offered to our customers, thus providing a raft of fastening solutions to meet the Indian market growth.

Tuning screws As well as electronics, telecommunications is also growing significantly in India thanks to Indian consumers driving a demand for mobile phones which is boosting the industry.

With over 15 years experience of manufacturing and supplying tuning screws to the major global telecommunication companies and their sub-contact base, the company is well placed to help with this increasing demand.

Tuning screws are used in microwave filters and power amplifiers and are part of base station and antenna systems predominately for the mobile telecommunications network. As networks expand and data rates increase these units play a very important role.

Generally brass with a silver plated finish, tuning screws have a fine pitch thread plus a matching brass locking nut. Stainless steel is also used in certain applications. The size of tuning screws can vary in both diameter, thread size, thread pitch and length depending on the application

and space constraints. Different drive types such as Slot or Torx ® are most common and the ‘nose’ design of the tuning screw is also a very important feature for ensuring precise tuning capability and stable signal/power performance.

New developments for faster and easier tuning functionality have led to self-locking possibilities being implemented in certain applications.

Las Vegas fastener Expo reporting strong interest The 15th Annual National Industrial Fastener & Mill Supply Expo scheduled for 19th – 21st October 2011 in its new location at the Sands Expo & Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, continues to add new companies and gather momentum, reports Susan A. Hurley, CEM, general manager.

s. Hurley adds: “We have already sold 621 booths to 463 companies from across the USA and around the world including Canada, China, Germany, India, Mexico, Singapore Spain and Taiwan. First Fastener Fair India ‘total success’ Launched as part of the series of the internationally renowned ‘Fastener Fair’ brand, the first edition of Fastener Fair India, trade exhibition for the fastener and fixings industry, proved a big success, reports organisers Inter-Ads Brooks.

rom 16 th – 17th April 2011 a remarkable 4,800 visitors came to the Bombay Exhibition Centre in Mumbai to meet with industry experts and discover a comprehensive range of industrial fasteners, construction fixings, assembly and installation systems as well as manufacturing technology. Both visitors and exhibitors praised the show as a highly professional and worthwhile industry event.

Half of the ninety exhibitors at this specialised industry event came from outside India, with an even spread of companies from Europe, Asia and the Americas. In the exhibition survey 95% of exhibitors were able to report positive business enquiries at their stands; and the large majority of exhibiting companies achieved their aims. It is no wonder that three quarters of the exhibitors had already indicated on site that they intended to exhibit again at the next exhibition. Fastener Fair India 2013 will take place from 17th – 18 th April 2013, at the same venue, the Bombay Exhibition Centre in Mumbai.

In the exhibitor survey the show received excellent marks for the quality and quantity of its trade visitors. These were mainly from India; however, some 3% of visitors came to Fastener Fair India from all parts of the world.

Visitors at Fastener Fair India 2011 were mainly fastener and fixings manufacturers (32%), purchasers (21%), engineers (18%), end users (12%) and distributors (11%).

Key industry sectors to which the visitors belonged included mechanical engineering (25%), the automotive industry and its suppliers (22%), electrical products and domestic appliances (13%) and hardware / DIY retailing (11%). The exhibition attracted fastener and fixings specialists at all levels, with the majority having managerial responsibility (27%), being head of production (26%) or having purchasing responsibility (16%).

Fastener Fair India ‘complete success’ for Dörken Dörken MKS-Systeme GmbH & Co. KG, Herdecke, Germany, was one of a selection of foreign exhibitors who took the opportunity to exhibit at the inaugural Fastener Fair India.

D

örken explains that a key factor in the company exhibiting at Fastener Fair India was that the exhibition was aimed specifically at the field of fastener and securing technology, and offered the opportunity to establish or further develop key contacts to companies from throughout the value-added chain. Dörken reports that numerous coaters, fastener manufacturers and representatives of motor vehicle manufacturers dropped by the Dörken stand during the two days of the fair to swap experiences. The focal point of discussions was frequently the rising demand in the Indian market for high-performance micro layer corrosion protection systems.

Like Fastener Fair Stuttgart in February of this year, the Indian fair proved a complete success for the company, with the consequence that Dörken will also be present at Fastener Fair São Paulo, to be held in November 2011.

Established systems for the automotive industry Dörken MKS-Systeme, a specialist in the field of zinc flake systems, presented its system solutions in Mumbai, which have been approved and are in use by all leading automobile manufacturers worldwide. In addition to the requirements of corrosion protection, these systems also fulfil other requirements of the OEMs such as the maintaining of specific friction factors, increased chemical resistance and specific coloration.

The product portfolio of the company includes both zinc flake base coats and organic and inorganic topcoats. From the very beginning these products have been free from known carcinogenic substances such as chrome (VI). They thereby fulfil the requirements of the EU Directive on End-of-Life Vehicles, which has practically forbidden the use of heavy metals in vehicle construction since 2007. A wide range of components such as fasteners, stamped and bent components, springs and brake discs are currently coated by experienced licensees with MKS systems all around the world.

The selection of coating technique depends on the respective component. Following corresponding pre-treatment for the respective area of application, zinc flake coating is applied using the standard application procedures of coating technology, followed by annealing in a tunnel furnace after each coating stage. The risk of application-related hydrogen brittling of highstrength components does not exist, as no hydrogen is present in the coating process. The focus is upon dip-spin applications for small mass-produced parts and the spraying method for larger components.

Free-flowing components are dipped in the coating medium in baskets and then spun to remove excess material.

Self-loosening of threaded fasteners

Here Bill Eccles, Bolt Science, looks into the causes of self-loosening of threaded fasteners and what steps can be taken to help prevent loosening.

P

Introduction

ractically every engineering product with any degree of complexity uses threaded fasteners. A key advantage of threaded fasteners over the majority of other joining methods is that they can be dis-assembled and re-used.

This feature is often the reason why threaded fasteners are used in preference to other joining methods and they often play a vital role in maintaining a product’s structural integrity. However, they are also a significant source of problems in machinery and other assemblies. The reasons for such problems are due, in part, to them unintentionally self-loosening.

Such self-loosening has been a problem since the start of the industrial revolution and for the last 150 years inventors have been devising ways in which it can be prevented. Many of the common types of locking methods for threaded fasteners were invented over 100 years ago, however it is only relatively recently that the main mechanism that is considered to cause self loosening has become understood.

There are a number of mechanisms that can result in a threaded fastener coming loose; these can be classified as rotational and non-rotational loosening.

Rotational and non-rotational loosening

In the vast majority of applications, threaded fasteners are tightened so that a preload is imparted into a joint. Loosening can be defined as a subsequent loss of preload following the completion of the tightening process. This can occur by one of two means. Rotational loosening, more commonly referred to as self-loosening, is when the fastener rotates under the action of external loading. Non-rotational loosening is when no relative movement occurs between the internal and external threads but a preload loss occurs.

Fasteners coming loose due to non-rotational loosening Non-rotational loosening can occur as a result of deformation of the fastener itself, or the joint, following assembly.

This can occur as a result of a partial plastic collapse of these interfaces.

When two surfaces come into contact with each other, asperities on each surface sustain the bearing load.

Because the actual contact area can be substantially less than the apparent area, very high localised stresses are sustained by the asperities that, even under moderate loading, are greater than the yield strength of the material.

Junker’s theory of self-loosening of fasteners Gerhard Junker in 1969 published a technical paper (‘New criteria for selfloosening of fasteners under vibration’ SAE Paper 690055, 1969) giving results of test work that he had completed to support his theory as to why threaded fasteners self loosen. His key finding was that preloaded fasteners loosen as a result of rotation as soon as relative motion occurs between the mating threads and between the bearing surfaces of the fastener and the clamped material. Junker found that transverse dynamic loads generate a far more severe condition for self-loosening than dynamic axial loads. The reason for this is that radial movement under axial loads is significantly smaller than that which is sustained under transverse loading.

Magnified surface showing asperity contact This leads to the surface partially collapsing following the completion of the tightening operation. This collapse is typically referred to as embedding. The amount of the clamp force that is lost due to embedding depends upon the bolt and joint stiffness, the number of interfaces present within the joint, the surface roughness and the bearing stress being applied. Under moderate surface stress conditions, the initial collapse results in typically around 1% to 5% of the clamp force being lost within the first couple of seconds of the joint being tightened. When the joint is subsequently dynamically loaded by applied forces, a further reduction occurs due the pressure changes that take place on the joint interfaces.

Loosening as a result of embedding loss is problematic on joints that comprise several thin joint surfaces and a small bolt grip length. If the surface bearing stress is kept below the compressive yield strength of the joint material, the amount of embedding loss is calculable and the joint can be designed so as to compensate for this loss.

Transverse movement of a bolted joint Junker showed that preloaded fasteners self-loosen when relative movement occurs between the mating threads and the fastener bearing surface.

Such relative movement will occur when the transverse force acting on the joint is larger than the frictional resisting force generated by the bolt’s preload. For small transverse displacements, relative motion can occur between the thread flanks and the bearing area contact surface. Once the thread clearances are overcome the bolt will be subject to bending forces, and if the transverse slippage continues slippage of the bolt head bearing surface will occur. Once this is initiated the thread and the bolt head will be momentarily free from friction. The internal off torque, present as a result of the preload acting on the thread helix angle, generates a relate rotation between the nut and the bolt.

Under repeated transverse movements this mechanism can completely loosen fasteners.

To investigate the causes of loosening, Junker developed a test machine, the socalled ‘Junker machine’ that will quantify the effectiveness of the loosening resistance of a fastener design.

Junker fastener test machine Roller bearings are used to eliminate the effects of friction between moving and fixed plates. A load cell allows continuous monitoring of the bolt load as transverse motion is applied from a moving plate that the nut is clamped onto. This is a major advantage over the shock test standard in that the loss of preload can be measured during the test and a graph of preload verses cycles plotted. The idea behind the Junker machine is that a transverse displacement generated by a cam results in a rocking action in the fastener.

Overcoming the friction grip of the fastener creates a self-loosening action.

Placing a helical spring washer under the bolt head has been shown on some tests to speed up the loosening, others show that the use of such washers give a similar performance to using a bolt without any locking device. Many large OEM manufacturers are aware of these findings and no longer specify such washers in their internal standards.

However, judging by the continued use of these washers, many organisations do not seem to be aware of these findings.

Many of the locking devices used on threaded fasteners are either based upon preventing relative thread movement between the bolt and nut threads (such as with nylon insert nuts) or relative movement of the nut to the joint (such as with the various types of ‘lock’ washers).

However, Junker and other later researchers all point to the importance of preventing transverse joint movement. A bolted joint, properly designed so that the clamp force from the bolts is sufficient to prevent transverse movement by friction grip between the joint plates, will not come loose. At the design stage this can be achieved by selecting the fastener size and strength so that the preload can create sufficient friction grip to prevent the external loads causing the joint to move.

Conclusions from the research

A test like the Junker test (test details in the specification DIN 65151), allows the performance of various fastener designs to be compared in terms of their resistance to self-loosening. Over the last twenty years a significant amount of work has been completed investigating existing fastener designs to allow comparisons to be made as to their resistance to vibration loosening.

To make a valid comparison it is vital that the same vibration amplitude is used, since this has a major influence on the results. A typical test result is shown here for helical spring washers.

The most widely accepted cause of threaded fasteners self loosening is not so much vibration but joint movement, in particular, transverse slip of the bolt threads and bearing surfaces. If sufficient preload can be achieved from the bolts to prevent joint movement, no locking device will be required, as friction will hold the parts together. The major problem of designing with threaded

fasteners is ensuring that the preload is sufficient to hold the parts securely together when variations in frictional conditions are included. The diagram shows the effect that frictional variations will have on bolt preload.

Typically, the tightening specification includes a torque range so that the joint can be economically assembled.

When account is taken of this and also that a prevailing torque (with maximum and minimum limits) may be present, a graph can be produced which shows the variation in preload that results from the assembly specification.

The effect of friction on bolt preload Designing the joint on the basis of the minimum anticipated preload generated by the bolt would eliminate any risk of loosening, designing using the mean value of preload would result in the potential of a number of bolts loosening if no ‘safety factor’ was applied. Allowance also needs be made for the loss of preload from embedding, this occurs in the threads and under the bolt head and nut face as the contact surfaces settle.

To maintain a limit on the amount of embedding it needs to be ensured that the bearing stress under the nut face, bolt head and within the joint, are kept within the maximum permissible bearing stress for the material being clamped.

In cases when joint movement cannot be prevented, in cases of thermal expansion for example, then a locking device of proven ability should be specified.

The Ornilock M6527P rivet is a structural rivet boasting a grip range from 2mm to 22.5mm.

“The design process started back in 2007 after we received numerous inquiries for a rivet with a longer grip range but with the strength and reliability of the well-known Orlock rivet. The Orlock rivet, diameters 4.8mm – 7.8mm, is a structural rivet with a double lock system patent and grip range up to 34mm.

It was designed originally for the automotive industry.”

Ornit’s answer to its customers’ inquiries was to improve the Ornilock’s grip which until then had a grip range of up to 15.9mm. Features of the Ornilock include internal locking mechanism, excellent multi grip performance and reduced inventory. The Ornilock also has high shear and tensile strength with flush break and multi grip capabilities.

Ornit has also recently launched the PIV-OR, a pivot style rivet, which is available in steel/steel, 6mm diameter, and has a pre-designed accurate grip according to the user’s specifications. The PIV-OR can be used as a pivot in various applications such as ladders, security bars and hand tools.

Fastening solutions from Rivit Rivit Srl is able to offer its customers a wide range of fastening solutions including blind bolting systems.

R

ivit explains that blind bolts are a very fast fastening system featuring strong resistance to vibrations and high shear and tensile strength. The fast placing is given by the non-use of complementary traditional fasteners such as bolts and nuts, which combines ease of installation requiring no special skills.

The blind bolting system consists of a bolt and a collar and the fixing is given by the moulding of the collar on the locking lines of the bolt itself.

Rivit offers two types of blind bolts: Rivlocks are standard blind bolts, while Rivlockgrips have a wider grip range which means that only a few types of bolts are needed to cover a wide range of thicknesses to be tightened.

Rivit points out that blind bolts are suitable for various applications in industries such as railway construction, automotive, ventilation, metal structural works, and shipbuilding. Blind bolts are particularly useful in applications where disassembly is not necessary.

his type of nut is more effective than standard hex nuts because it includes a non threaded part which closes around the thread creating a lock between the two threads.

Self-locking nuts are used as a secure fastening nut for joining various kinds of parts. They are manufactured from natural polyamide 6.6 that, when combined with steel screws, provides low drag torque and smooth operation throughout the life of the assembly (preferably not reusable).

They also save weight over the conventional steel/nylon lock nuts.

The cost effective plastic nuts are widely used in a variety of industrial applications (electronic and electrical equipment, construction, furniture and medical industries) requiring such properties as strength, corrosion resistance, oil resistance, low weight alternatives and low thermal conductivity. The working temperature range is -30°C to +100°C and metric sizes include M5, M6, M8, M10 and M12.

For the installation of the blind bolts customers can use RIV508, hydro pneumatic riveting tool for structural blind rivets and bolts, or the booster version RIV508B, allowing a customer to place structural rivets up to 7.8mm diameter and Rivlock, Rivlockgrip blind bolts up to 6.4mm diameter.

RIV509, a portable hydro pneumatic tool for blind bolts, and the booster version RIV509B, were specially designed by Rivit to place blind bolts and they are ideal for placing Rivlocks and Rivlockgrips up to 10mm diameter.

Both tools feature a considerable tensile strength and a remarkable return force (airdraulic piston), essential for the expulsion of the collar.

Meeting the demands of the marine industry Southco® says that its stainless steel R4-10 rotary latch brings corrosion-resistant durability to a proven latching solution suitable for vandal-proof and watertight storage areas.

C

onstructed of 304 grade stainless steel, the R4-10 meets marine requirements in performance and salt spray. The concealed latch allows flexible styling of the storage compartment area and accommodates

misalignment between the latch and striker bolt. A double stage latching option provides additional security and functionality. These tools are designed to install blind rivets and lock bolts for the global aerospace and commercial markets.

Rail industry

The Gage Bilt lock bolt tools are used to assemble the actual train rails. Since the lock bolt is difficult to remove it offers a degree of tamper resistance. Once the lock bolt collar is swaged onto the lock bolt pin by the Gage Bilt tool it resists vibration and shock loads. The only way to remove the collar is to burn it off with a torch or cut it off with a special tool. In addition Gage Bilt tools install the lock bolts and blind structural rivets used to assemble the freight and passenger cars for the rail industry.

Buildings The steel superstructure and architectural metals of buildings are assembled using Gage Bilt tools. Large diameter lock bolts from ½ inch to 7 /8 inch are typically used to construct the buildings superstructure. The lock bolts will resist vibration, offer high shear strength and consistent clamp loads. The Gage Bilt tool eliminates the variability of torque in nut and bolt assemblies.

Large diameter blind structural rivets up to 3 /8 inch diameter are installed with Gage Bilt tools to assemble aluminium cladding to aluminium extrusions in windows and other building trim applications.

Bridges Lock bolts are commonly used to assemble bridge structures that need to flex.
