THE FASHION SOCIAL

2

Fashion journalism is vital for the communication of trends and allows topical issues and areas of fashion to be brought to awareness. The editor’s role includes coordinating people to ensure the content is fit for publishing (Bradford, 2019). During this module, I have learnt skills that will apply to all aspects of marketing and thus will be used in my future career. To reflect on this experience, Gibbs’ (1988) reflective cycle will be used (Bolton and Delderfield, 2018). In week three, I was assigned editor, and was given a set theme: content related to the Aesthetica Film Festival. I could sense apprehension from my peers about this theme, as it was not directly related to fashion. This led to my colleagues asking if they were allowed to do different themes. I realised that I could not be biased and only let one person change. Therefore, I decided to adapt the theme to become content related to film and technology. This meant that the content writers could have more freedom about what they wrote and therefore enjoy the process more, which would allow them to produce better content. This was evident as some people produced some of their highest standard of work during my week. In retrospect, I could have been more assertive about the original theme so that my teammates could experience the reality of the industry. So, if I had the opportunity to do this again, I would be confident in my actions and stick to the original theme.

A NEW ERA FOR DR. MARTENS

Paid Advertorial

Dr. Martens reinvents the future by embracing its heritage for its latest campaign: Made Strong. By Zara Reeve

A

broken foot, a doctor and an engineer were all it took for Dr. Martens to be born. Dr Klaus Maertens was a young German doctor and soldier, and after breaking his foot in 1947, he designed a shoe with an air-cushioned sole to support his healing. He showed a prototype to his close friend Dr Herbert Funk who was an engineer, and the partnership formed the brand Dr. Martens which we are all familiar with today. A short while after on 1 April 1960, the iconic 1460 boot was brought to life by Bill Griggs, who had bought the rights to manufacture Dr. Martens in the United Kingdom during the previous year. Fast forward around 60 years, with the release of the Made Strong campaign on 17 October 2023, Dr. Martens’ heritage is rediscovered for future generations. Strength has been at the forefront of the brand as the boots needed to be strong for working conditions, but since then, strength has been redefined. The Made Strong campaign explores a new interpretation of strength from the perspectives of the young community that has adopted the brand. By harnessing inner strength, communities can form solidarity to generate collective strength. Nigerian skate crew Motherlan, one of the many faces of the campaign, vocalises that “no man is an island.” Made Strong stresses the importance of communities coming together to progress in the current world. The campaign offers a fresh take on the very first Dr. Martens boots in the form of the new 14XX. Original design features are maintained such as the classic yellow

stitching, with added flair in the shape of eccentric colours and print enabling freedom for people to experiment with their identity expression. The products capture the ideals of the younger generations, as musician Milo, who features in the campaign says, “strong is expressing yourself.” Made Strong aims to create a safe environment for people to have the freedom to be their true selves. It encourages people to embrace vulnerabilities and reflect on your differences because growth begins with yourself and flourishes with the help of other people. Not only that, but a vibrant event took place in London Copeland Park on the 21 October 2023 to celebrate the community that Dr. Martens has brought together. Performances by underground talented musicians like Ezra Collective, an award-winning jazz fusion quintet, headlined on the day. Dancing and movement were made easy with the sturdiness of the new design of the Dr. Marten boots. In addition, a colourful hand-painted mural stretched out over the street of Copeland Park and a thrilling skate show was performed by Motherlan. The event was hands-on and engaging for all the visitors and the atmosphere extracted good vibes from the crowd which captures the essence of Dr. Martens. Made Strong reinforces the values of Dr. Martens and represents new symbols of hope and strength. The next time you put on your Dr. Martens boots, you can smile knowing that you are part of something bigger and that we are connected as strangers through a positive community.

DESTINATION: DALAMAN

An exciting new place to visit in Turkey By Zara Reeve

S

crolling through the endless all-inclusive holidays on a package holiday site, price set low to high, Turkey dominates the cheap page. It’s funny how a price can be set on a place and how your expectations can be made through a screen, thousands of miles away from your destination. “Book now” is clicked, money is sent, and it looks like you’re on the next flight to Turkey, destination: Dalaman. The plane, though cramped and uncomfortable (it’s true that you get what you pay for), soared like a swallow on its yearly migration. Through the window was a full bird’s eye view of where the mountain peaks meet the blurred boundary of the sky. Feathery soft clouds collected around the rock formations as the plane began to descend. A chariot awaited outside the airport in the form of a worse-forwear shuttle bus with no air conditioning. The mixed delirium of humidity and travel fogs the brain, and with that, you find yourself on the bus which was blasting music and coloured lights. Other travellers are packed in like sardines, some more enthusiastic about the journey than others, the reek of budget alcohol explains it. The journey was worth it though, as the sheer turquoise Marmaris Sea came into view and waved its greeting. Rays of sunshine caught the surface and sparkled as the ripples of water collided with the slate marina. Sunbeds were sporadically lined along the waterfront, facing a new perspective of the rolling mountains. In the opposite direction is the hotel, situated among a thick forest of healthy vegetation with fuchsia bougainvillea climbing the beige stucco walls. The hotel seemed as if it was in the middle of nowhere but only a few minutes down the road, were shops selling counterfeits and clubs targeted towards the English which the shuttle bus had passed on the way. The contrast was beyond belief yet unsurprising all at the same time, it showed that anyone could visit Dalaman and feel comforted about what it has to offer. After a day of travelling, the sun had set, and it was time

to get a taste of the buffet. The glowing eyes of stray cats peered from the darkness, waiting for a generous tourist to sneak a scrap of food out of the restaurant. Some were bolder and simply strolled in and sat waiting under the “DO NOT FEED THE CATS” sign. However, the cats were not the only ones tempted by the food, as the aroma of cooking caught the evening breeze and enticed the hungry holidaymakers in. There was a vast selection of fresh fish, bread and Turkish vegetable dishes that people piled up onto their plates. Many went back for seconds and sat content with full stomachs, it was difficult to tell if the radiating heat was coming from the atmosphere or because of the fuzzy feeling of warmth from the unlimited cocktails. Nevertheless, it was clear that everyone was going to sleep well that night. Time does not exist when on holiday, the clock ticks but you are blissfully unaware of the world still turning and the clock forever ticking. Bathing in the sun on a boat voyaging to tourist attractions feels like a distant memory. The shuttle bus was back and the departing guest’s skin were different shades of pink, red and tan, a gift from the sun to bring back to their home countries. Once back home, the holiday blues kick in and you find yourself back on the package holiday websites, this time knowing your destination. The price doesn’t matter now, as long as your next destination is Dalaman.

The Star is Back!

By Zara Reeve

THE RISE Jeffree Star is a controversial MUA, best known for his online makeup tutorials and for attracting cancel culture. Boasting over 15 million YouTube subscribers, Jeffree has always been in the limelight dating back to 2006 and beyond. He originated from the music industry and gained popularity on MySpace, but his stardom was ultimately due to his eccentric personality and brutally honest opinions. However, his personality was the thing that could start and almost end his career.

THE FALL Most of us have lost count of the number of accusations and scandals Jeffree has been involved in. From his rise to internet fame, his behaviour has been like a volcano ready to erupt and cancel culture was already at a boiling point when his most well-known scandal occurred. In 2019, Jeffree Star had been working with fellow YouTuber Shane Dawson on a hit series of videos documenting the process of creating their conspiracy makeup collection. Sales of the collection were through the roof and there was major hype revolving around the videos. But in 2020, during the peak of lockdown when everyone was trapped inside, living online and bored out of their minds, Shane Dawson was cancelled which would go down in internet history. This snowballed into Jeffree also getting cancelled by association plus past scandals that were dug up, which marked the fall of Jeffree Star. Conspiracy palettes were being destroyed by fans and global makeup brand Morphe cut ties with Jeffree and stopped selling all products under his name. Shane stopped posting on YouTube and became a meme on TikTok. It appeared to be the end for them both, the nail in the coffin. But if there’s one thing Jeffree is good at (other than makeup) is rising from the ashes of controversy.

THE RISE AGAIN The resurrection of Jeffree Star consisted of buying a ranch named Star Yak Farm. The farm life is worlds away from his pink luxurious Los Angeles life. Although he escaped to the country, the controversy still followed him, but despite all this Jeffree appears to possess an unearthly immunity to cancel culture and regardless of the messy past and potential chaotic future of Jeffree Star, he stays an unbothered millionaire living like a Barbie cowboy.

THE RISE AND FALL OF JEFFREE STAR

Script for 3 Interior Design Trends That Will Transform Your Home Introduction We all know that there’s no place like home, interior design is one of those things that can add your personal flair to your living space. If you’re looking for an interior refresh or are just wanting to keep up with the trends for planning your dream home, here are 3 interior design trends that will transform your home. Japandi Introduction: Japandi is a combination of Japanese and Scandinavian interior design features. If you are craving a simple way of life and want your home to reflect this, then Japandi is for you. The aim is to create a space that is tranquil, which can be achieved through uncluttered surfaces and a neutral colour palette. Colours: Colours that could be used include sand, sage green and caramel with added injections of black to contrast. Features walls can add interest to neutral interiors, this can be done by using wallpaper inspired by Japanese foliage such as bamboo and cherry blossom or you could use a block of colour like sage or caramel. Textures: Natural textures are a key part of fulfilling this look and light wood grains can be implemented in flooring and furniture. Wooden panelling can also make good room dividers and add definition to plain walls. The hint of Scandinavian comes through in the raw look of the wood. To add softer texture, linen can be used for cushions, duvets and curtains. Structure: Curves are an essential, and this is reflected in furniture like chairs and tables. Also, windows can be a focal point so if you’re wanting to go all out, big windows will let in natural light to enhance the airy feel of the Japandi style. Retro Revival Introduction: Retro Revival brings the 70s back from the dead. Mid-century meets modern in this interior design trend. If you can imagine yourself chatting in a conversation pit while listening to a record, this could be your groove. Colours: Think darker and more atmospheric for this trend, use brushed gold light fixtures to create low lighting. Bite into these colours; burnt orange and peach, olive green, and mustard yellow. This combination is delicious for the senses. Embrace retro by matching the colours of soft furnishings like rugs and curtains and go one step further by being matchy matchy to the colours of the walls. Textures: It wouldn’t be mid-century without orange toned wood. Furniture and flooring in this wood tone can really improve the cohesivity of your crib. Funky terrazzo flooring has made a comeback if you want a different vibe and comfy leather sofas contrast the harsh low lines that mid-century furniture can bring. Structure: Don’t just limit this trend to inside because mid-century doors can add a shot of colour and add the cherry on top to your pad. Cozy Cabin Introduction: Escape to a log cabin in a forest in the middle of nowhere and cozy up with a mug of hot chocolate in front of a roaring fire while listening to cicadas chirp with this trend; cozy cabin. Colours: Bring the outside in with forest green, stone grey and earthy browns. This trend intends to warm you up like eating soup on a cold day. Textures: Wood is a huge aspect of this trend, but even if you don’t live in a wooden cabin, you can still recreate the same affect with wood panelling or realistic wallpaper lookalikes. Don’t hold back on chunky blankets and cushions to add a snug and lived-in appearance. Use a fluffy faux sheep skin rug to implement a thermal layer to the floorboards. Structure: Not everyone will have a wood-burner but light fixtures emitting warm white light will establish the same cozy ambience, this can be carried out with fairy lights and lamps.
