Each generation has their own pivotal moment, but it is less about what that moment held as it is abouthowtheyrespondedtoit
Zerik Samples, CEO Jed Young, President
Growing up in the 2000s, historic events such as four coordinated suicide terrorist attacks carried out by the Islamic extremist network Al Qaeda against the United States, well known as 9/11 and then the election of our first African American president, Barack Obama, made an indelible impression on me For the children growing upduring thepast decade, thepandemicisthehistoricevent, whichwill, inso many ways, shapetheir generation
Fiscal year 20 & 21 found us, like so many others, operating under the strain and uncertainty of the COVID 19 pandemic. And yet our mission has never felt as relevant nor as urgent as it does now. As the prolonged economic effects of this pandemic continue to play out, we are reminded that too many people do not have a safe, affordablehomeinwhichtoweatherthestorm
It is indeed our privilege to present the Coastal Empire Habitat for Humanity 2020 & 2021 Annual Reports.
A Letter from the CEO and President
Our build sites, although modified from past years with added safety features and protocols related to the pandemic, have been vibrant, filled with volunteers ready to serve! The homes have continued to be built; the relationships with volunteers and future Habitat homeowners continue to be forged; and the life changing opportunity for homeownership continues to be provided Thank you for being a part of the Coastal Empire Habitat for Humanity and for being a part of a cause that brings people together to build homes, community, and hope. The spirit and commitment of this generation will navigate through our historical time with an even greaterpurposeandadeeperunderstandingofhowwecanbeunitedinservingoneanother.
Habitat Savannah has continued to keep these people at the forefront of our minds as we find new, creative ways to keep serving our community As new obstacles arise limited volunteers on site, soaring lumber prices, a labor shortage we continue to find new ways to innovate and grow so that we can not only serve morefamilies, butservethembetter

This includes two decades leading Habitat for Humanity affiliates in Georgia and well as serving on the boards of established and start up nonprofits 16 of those years were with other affiliates in the state of Georgia. Harold served four faithful years with Coastal Empire Habitat for Humanity. In that time, Harold and his team closed the first zero equivalent Habitat mortgage in Georgia with Synovus Bank. The ReStore and office were consolidated so that they are all under one roof at 701 MLK Jr. Blvd in downtown Savannah. He also secured the first CHIP grant to build affordable homeownership units in Garden City, thereby expanding CEHFH's service area to include both the City of Savannah and Garden City and rebranding CEHFH as serving the entire Chatham County. Harold reengaged the Home Builders Association of Greater Savannah to participate in 2 Home Builder Blitzs in 2017 and 2019, resulting in the construction of 6 new homes He also completed one and secured two additional Neighborhood revitalization grants from Republic Services to partner with Garden City Government and neighborhoods to improve neighborhood parks, the Rossignol Hill Community Center, and the State Farmers Market.
As Habitat for Humanity representative, Harold served on the incorporating committee and first Board of Directors of the Coastal Empire Disaster Recovery Committee (CEDRC) and on the organizing committee for the Chatham County Affordable Housing Coalition.

“Samples fit the profile we were looking for perfectly”, said Jed Young, Board Chair “He’s tenacious, and passionate about improving the lives of families in the community. I’m excited for our next phase.” Before transitioning to Savannah Habitat, Samples was Chief Development Officer of Coastal Georgia Community Action, in Brunswick.
After the retirement of Howard Tessendorf, the Board of Directors conducted a national search only to find their new leader at home in Southeast Georgia.
During his tenure he built strong relationships in their nine county service area, revamped the annual Martin Luther King, Jr., Community Breakfast; earned the stakeholder support of Congressman Buddy Carter and international TV personalities Judge Glenda Hatchet and the Rev Dr Clifton Davis Samples also helped to secure more than $2 million dollars in grants and contributions for the agency.
