VISION
To that end, our Annual First Ladies Luncheon is our celebration of unity, and an opportunity to continue building upon key initiatives with exemplary partners who share a common purpose. The values of support, education, development, aid and advancement underlie our mission and are shared among the extraordinary agents of change we recognize here today. It’s also an opportunity to celebrate (or recount) reflect upon recent achievements that will chart the course for a new way forward for future generations; the most recent of which highlights inspiration through cultural exchange. Among the most noteworthy of these is the introduction of The Commonwealth Fashion Exchange, which unites us with longtime supporter, visionary, founder of Eco-Age and past F4D Eco Award honoree, Livia Firth. This innovative and substantial addition to the global fashion and design calendar pairs leading fashion design talent with artisan producers from across the Commonwealth’s 53 countries.
8
VISION
These distinguished designs crafted through these first-time collaborators were showcased at Buckingham Palace during London Fashion week in February, at an exclusive reception with Her Royal Highnesses The Duchess of Cambridge and Countess of Wessex. In April, on the heels of this prestigious celebration, First Ladies representing the effort joined us to underscore their commitment during the Commonwealth Summit at a memorable high tea at London’s famed Claridges Hotel. The Fashion Exchange utilizes The Commonwealth’s reach to address some of the most pressing issues of our age with esteemed partners in the textile, precious gems and fashion arenas. With strategic planning around the concept fashioned to address central issues impacting all nations, including gender equality, ethical production, supply chains, innovation, economic growth and poverty reduction, we are immensely proud to augment the global platform we all endeavor, through our everyday efforts, to advance.
9
VISION
To bolster our influence and reach, I am also extremely proud and honored to announce the appointment of venerated Latin American friend and supporter: Venezuelan-born filmmaker and human rights activist, Fabiola Beracasa Beckman, whose life’s work has been dedicated to bridging culture and arts for impact. I’m in sheer awe of her sacrifice, compassion and commitment and am confident that we’ll be so infinitely invigorated revitalized by her spirit and contributions. As with every year, I am awestruck by the hearts and minds of all who have joined us on this memorable and vital celebration of fortitude, courage, vision and love for man, child… and womankind. I humbly thank you all for your participation in, and care of our future, what’s to come, and the promise of a more reinvigorated tomorrow.

CARMEN BUSQUETS F4D AWARD RECI PI ENT A philanthropist, investor, humanitarian and sustainability advocate, Carmen Busquets’ career first began in the luxury fashion industry, and spans over three decades. She started with her own fashion boutique in her hometown of Caracas, Venezuela in 1990 at age 25 – the first of its kind in Latin America to house international designers. This venture was followed by various well-being endeavors in the early years of the Internet, including a collaboration with Deepak Chopra. In the late ‘90s, she made history in the online fashion space when she became the first co-founding investor in NetA-Porter, after meeting with Natalie Massenet. Busquets has since mentored and invested in founders with disruptive ideas to create a diverse group of companies and start-ups that, through technology and sustainability, contribute to a new economy. Her portfolio now focuses on luxury fashion, beauty and well-being, such as pre-order platform Moda Operandi, and rental companies such as Armarium and VillageLuxe that work toward easing over-consumption and slowing down consumerism. Her other notable investments include Cult Beauty, currently the UK’s fastest-growing beauty e-tailer, the Business of Fashion, the fashion industry’s go-to resource, Farfetch and more. Around the world, approximately 10,000 jobs have been created from her investments, causing a ripple effect that will reverberate through future generations. Over the past several years, Busquets has increasingly focused her efforts on charitable causes and educational initiatives, collaborating with a host of global bodies, world leaders and nonprofit organizations. Among these are the WWF, the Bhutanese government and Royal Family, the Bhuatn Nuns’ Foundation, Latin American focus groups, PACUNAM and Glasswing, a sustainability consultancy to Eco-Age, the Oslo Freedom Forum, the charitable app Elbi, founded by Natalia Vodianova, and the Fashion Trust arm of the British Fashion Council to support emerging fashion talents.
29
PEOPLE
The period spent connecting on these initiatives has led to a series of notable achievements. With the WWF and the Royal Government of Bhutan, as well as a number of passionate environmentalists including Leonardo DiCaprio, Busquets was a part of the ‘Bhutan For Life’ initiative – the greatest conservation story of our time. Placed right at the heart of the Eastern Himalayas, Bhutan is one of the world’s 10 most biodiverse regions; this innovative financing project, which secured $43 million, will safeguard 5 million acres of protected land and wildlife over a span of 14 years. Most importantly, the projects will educate local communities on how to preserve their land and sustain themselves, paying forward to the next generation through this transfer of knowledge. The political unrest and human rights violations in Venezuela, which began in 2017, have been particularly unsettling for Busquets who had to flee her country when Hugo Chavez took to power in the late ‘90s. One specific case that touched her deeply, saw the unlawful arrest of young violinist Willy Arteaga, who famously played his violin as a fight against oppression during the protests, and became a national symbol of resistance. Arteaga was arrested while playing the violin during a protest in Caracas and taken to a military prison. Busquets worked with the Oslo Freedom Forum on funding, and donated to help release him on parole, then invited him to New York to speak at the Forum and implemented a funding program to help him resettle and continue his music studies.

Earlier this year, she traveled to El Salvador to take part in mentoring young girls via the youth development programs led by Glasswing, an organization for which she serves on the board and generously supported in order for them to expand in the U.S. She continues to work with the nonprofit in aims of empowering at-risk Latin American youth. Expanding on her commitment to sustainability, she was part of leading the gathering of a group of environmentalists, scientists, journalists, humanitarian-minded entrepreneurs and Latin American artisans in San Jose, Costa Rica this year. Attended by Livia Firth, designer and humanitarian Donna Karan, OSKLEN founder and UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador Oskar Metsavaht, and many more inspirational participants, the group subsequently formed together as a coalition – a strong global network that will pool its resources to promote all pillars of sustainability, as well as mentor and support creatives in Latin America and beyond, to shift their mindset towards a more conscious consumerism. A true global citizen, Busquets splits her time between Switzerland, Europe and the U.S., and spends ample time in New York, London and Paris for business, where she mentors the founders of the startups she supports, as well as Bhutan and Central America for humanitarian work. She devotes much of her time to mind-body disciplines, something instilled in her by her parents since childhood, who followed George Gurdjieff’s methods. A devotee to spirituality and self-development, she is above all an advocate and defender of the right to education and freedom in all its guises.

STUART MCCULLOUGH F4 D’S LEAGU E O F G ENT L EMEN AWARD RECI PI ENT Stuart McCullough leads The Woolmark Company, which focuses on promoting the natural qualities of wool and continues to prioritize the creation of a more sustainable future at every level of the industry. One of The Woolmark Company’s biggest assets is its community of growers, manufacturers, retailers and end consumers. It connects brands around the world directly with supply chain partners, and particularly the Australian growers with the world of high fashion. This two-way communication between the raw material and the end product allows for traceability across the entire supply chain and most importantly, respect for where wool comes from. After three years of development, WoolQ is a significant project The Woolmark Company launched earlier this year, that gives a face to the wool growers of Australia, enabling them to interact with industry information, data, selling choices and trading opportunities, thereby giving autonomy to these farmers and their businesses. Moving forward, this tool will offer the potential for total transparency for the entire wool industry. Australian woolgrowers consider themselves custodians of the land, not owners, and are increasingly implementing sustainable practices that are working to reverse land degradation and increase biodiversity on their properties; practices that are actively encouraged and promoted by The Woolmark Company. A 5-year project has begun this year to capture and report on-farm stewardship by woolgrowers, assessing impacts on soil health, biodiversity, and threatened native species. As the global authority on wool, The Woolmark Company sees an obligation to responsibly and openly communicate the facts of the industry, and continually learn and advance the eco-credentials of wool. The research arm of the company is dedicated to publishing, in peer-reviewed journals, scientifically

defensible evidence for ways to communicate the fibre’s inherent properties, and to improve farming and manufacturing practices. Culminating seven years of research, a Lifecycle Assessment guideline on wool’s total footprint has been developed and will be published later this year. The company is also researching trends in the use of eco-friendly chemicals across 40 different wool processes, as well as creating a benchmarking tool that compares manufacturers in terms of their overall environmental footprint through aspects including water and energy use. This work will allow companies to understand their impact on the supply chain and identify improvement areas on an individual level, with cumulative improvements to the industry overall. The Woolmark Company is committed to employing long-term thinking in its investment in innovation, which is why it nurtures talent through the Wool4School, Wool Performance Challenge and International Woolmark Prize programs, which all serve to educate and push young thinkers to engage with the natural design potential that wool offers. As the Managing Director of The Woolmark Company, McCullough has identified these priorities in research, development and innovation to be not only useful for the growers, processors and designers of wool, but an invaluable tool with which to communicate to end consumers, empowering them with truthful, scientific information in order to make responsible purchases. This public engagement ensures a future for the wool industry, as more and more consumers are finding true value in the renewable, natural and biodegradable properties of wool.

Dunn joined CACI as a graduate and spent the early part of her career working on geo-spatial data, creating site location models for retailers. She went on to found Dunnhumby with her partner, Clive Humby. The business focused on the application of customer data to understand and predict consumer trends and behaviors. At that time, customer data was not valued or stored but simply discarded, following a transaction. Their plans and original database design brought radically new capabilities to consumer businesses around the world. In 1995, Tesco embraced the dunnhumby approach for its Clubcard program and so it became the first mass customization marketing program in the world. Customer insight and Clubcard rewards helped to transform Tesco from a secondary player in the UK, to the significant market and global leader it is today. Dunn was responsible for the company commercially, guiding the company into new sectors and markets. As well as growing dunnhumby’s own team to span 25 countries across Europe, Asia and the Americas, Dunn worked closely with international clients to embed true customer-centricity in their organizations. TIME TO RISE NO MORE SILENCE
BY NAILA CHOWDHURY The world we live in is painted with so much suffering, and none of us is immune to it. However, each of us has within us the opportunity to thrive in adversity and become a symbol of hope and a source of change. I have traveled the world and witnessed the suffering of women and children everywhere, from remote villages in Bangladesh to urban neighborhoods in San Diego. The injustice I have seen drives the mission behind much of my work, but it is the resiliency and strength of the survivors of injustice that continues to motivate and inspire me to take action.
