- THE WAY FORWARD For countless humanitarians ushering in change for a new world, it is widely understood that necessity is the mother of invention. But that concept is far more layered and complex. It takes a reevaluation of self, a renewed vision and commitment to action, and a disruption of our routine experience. It’s a soulful reinvention which serves to redefine our priorities and it all begins with simply expanding our awareness of the adversities facing each and every culture – and enacting a plan. To awaken each day with a renewed sense of purpose and possibility despite these challenges, and work toward restoration, is my definition of “rebirth”.

And it’s in this spirit that we enter the 7th year of our Annual First Ladies Luncheon.

I relish this time of year, when we unite to honor venerated luminaries and organizations from various sectors for their unparalleled dedication to action and transformation. They each perfectly embody our mission and principles that align with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals to educate, empower, enhance and enrich communities (the 4 E’s) the world over. Their selfless efforts not only serve to advance their respective activities, but challenge us to rethink our own capacity for growth and giving.

Motsepe Family Foundation. Under her guidance and expertise, specifically in economic and social development, we are exceptionally honored to welcome her contributions toward the advancement of initiatives in this region.

In partnership with Jnifen and Dr. Moloi-Motsepe, as well the many we’ve stood with over the years, we unite to revel in the value of innovation, and the essential exploration of a renewed vision with a vital focus on sustainability. To that end, in partnership with the UN’s former Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon, our journey to Copenhagen for the annual Sustainia Awards in February set new expectations for our current agenda.

With these remarkable individuals, there is another who stood as our steadfast champion among them – our beloved partner since inception, Vogue Italia Editor-in-Chief and F4D Goodwill Ambassador, Franca Sozzani. Her passing last year was a devastating blow to the world, our organization and to me personally, but her legacy will endure forever.

The lives she touched and changed throughout her life were immeasurable, as was the weight of her advancement efforts on behalf of F4D and global initiatives around the globe. We are indebted to her for her exquisitely unique contributions, her passion for the arts and humanity, and for the extraordinary gifts she shared with us all.

While our industry is, unquestionably, a crucial component to growth and economic stimulation, it is also one of the most resource and labor intensive industries in the world, which only underscores the need for a collaborative effort to increase sustainability in all facets of the business. This joint commitment mobilized the international fashion industry to concentrate on creative solutions for transformation in how we produce and consume fashion.

Unquestionably, her impact was fortifying, prodigious and powerful, and laid the groundwork for an enduring legacy in many countries; to the extent that the torchbearers to follow are better positioned for success. As such, it is my great privilege to share that longtime and treasured friend of Franca’s, Afef Jnifen – Tunisian fashion model, actress, writer, entrepreneur and philanthropist/activist – will join us as a Goodwill ambassador to the Middle East for F4D, to continue what was begun.

I must also acknowledge the herculean efforts of our dear friend, longtime supporter and past honoree, Livia Firth, who was also a featured presenter in Copenhagen, and has been steadfast in her support not only our efforts, but of the creation of sustainable practices on behalf of many nations.

Additionally, I’m extremely proud to share that Dr. Precious Moloi-Motsepe, this year’s recipient of F4D’s inaugural Franca Sozzani Award, joins us as

Topics highlighted, on behalf of F4D, included the celebration of the merging of fashion and diplomacy, which was ushered in by Franca who commissioned a special issue of L’Uomo Vogue, which was the first to feature our rebrand of Africa, and shed light on fashion, film and the arts. Emphasis was also paid to our thriving partnership with Sustainia and the development of Sustainia Living – the new fashion .

This vital initiative sanctions sustainability as a vital way forward in fashionable lifestyle choice, and both communicates and excites people about the benefits and practices in this arena, impacting all areas of living – from food to fashion, fitness and well-being as well as conscious consumption and selection of all things connected to our overall quality of living. Through this, we hope and endeavor to inspire and motivate us all to adopt

conscious brands and business practices to ensure a more empowered culture and quality experience.

The world is an evolution in progress, as are we all.

And when I reflect on that global view, I am acutely aware of our obligation to serve as the generation of change makers whose footprint can right the course for a better, more stimulated and thriving tomorrow.

It all begins with each of us committing to some form of action and working toward encouraging communities to get involved. If we stay the course with a fortified commitment to purpose and revitalization, transformation will be ours together.

They called her moves risky and her creations fanciful, but for a woman grounded in uncompromising fortitude and self-assurance, those decisions came as naturally as a heartbeat. Our experience of the world was redefined through her vision. She helped us see the grand and sublime, the questionable and the controversial, the future and the unknown. She simultaneously used fashion as a mirror and a

crystal ball to illustrate the nuances of life, not only when we yearned for renewed inspiration to drive us, but when we needed it.

In 2011, Sozzani became the Goodwill Ambassador of Fashion 4 Development (F4D).

She embodied the F4D spirit, and passionately set out to fulfill its mission for more than half a decade, championing its many causes throughout Africa and around the globe. As an editor, creator, humanitarian and ambassador, she employed her innate skills to bring awareness to matters of diversity and inclusion, sustainability, poverty and the necessity of women’s empowerment initiatives. In 2008, Vogue Italia dedicated an entire issue to the strength and influence of black models in fashion, a demographic some considered overlooked. It forced complex conversations to be had, demanding that the most powerful arbiters and industry influencers honor that which lies at fashion’s core:

Fast forward to 2012 and the momentum of the “all black” issue remained a central catalyst for Sozzani to spearhead the creation of a bustling network of small and medium-sized fashion related businesses in Africa. “You can’t be stingy with dreams. You have to dream big,” she shared. It was during her trips to Africa, and particularly Ghana, that she would recognize the commonality of her dream and that of young African designers. Both saw an Africa rarely envisioned. It was an Africa rich with talent and splendor, calling for our recognition and support. Her mentoring tour of Africa brought global attention to designers whose talents had gone unnoticed, and provided a more complete view of Africa’s beauty and resources. Her voice helped to educate the industry, showing us that beyond the narrow-minded images of poverty we see, there is a rising class of young people finding ways to express themselves as well as empower their communities through the economic opportunities fashion provides.

In that same year Sozzani used her platform as a symbol of solidarity with one of the most powerful tools in her arsenal. The May 2012 issue of Vogue showcased designers, stylists, writers, actors, presidents and first ladies from all over the continent.

It was an Africa she wanted to show was “creative and confident of its own strengths1.”

She refused to let the homogenous or commercial reign without the balance of the diverse and unique. This driving characteristic was at the forefront of all that she did for fashion and for humanity. “Everyone can afford fashion on some level, everyone can talk about it. So what else can we say?2” To this question Franca found answers not only in the present but in the future.

Unlike many who would argue that technology has severed our connection to each other, she saw the inception and proliferation of Vogue Italia’s online presence as another opportunity to speak to the world with a new voice.

Sozzani realized what F4D holds dear, and that is the ability to harness the universality of fashion to push us beyond the superficial and into the realms of the supernatural; where models are far more than “the muse� and designs become seeds of change, sowing possibilities of growth unimagined by those who, like her, laid the groundwork for the next wave of thinkers and doers. As uncompromising as she was sincere, her legacy of grace, excellence and charity will be celebrated for many years to come.

Y B I L Y U R M A N, co-founder and designer at David Yurman,

Inc., has been instrumental in the success of the renowned design house since its inception in 1980. Sybil’s creative discipline as a painter, coupled with her marketing acumen, have helped to create an internationally acclaimed jewelr y and timepiece leader brand at the forefront of the luxur y market.

In the late 50’s, Yurman (then, Sybil Kleinrock) moved to San Francisco’s HaightAshbury district, where she met a number of influential figures in her life as an artist, including Allen Ginsburg, Peter Orlovsky, Jack Kerouac and Neal Cassady. These leading figures of the beatnik movement encouraged her to pursue her passion for painting. Later, she studied the art of Raku pottery with Shoji Hamada, an education that informs her hand to this day.

In 1969, Sybil and David Yurman met while working together in a sculptor’s studio – he as a sculptor and Sybil as a young painter. A mutual interest in the arts sparked a relationship that would become the foundation of the brand as it is today. David’s initial foray into creating jewelry started with one-of-a-kind gifts for his then-girlfriend, Sybil – she wore David’s sculpture as jewelry. In 1971, a necklace called “Dante” caught the eye of Bella Fishko, founder of New York’s Forum Gallery, and she asked if it was for sale. Simultaneously, Sybil said “yes” and David said “no,” but they agreed to leave it with the dealer. By the time they got home, four had sold, and so the inception of the brand as it is known today began.

In 2001, her insight and direction were key factors in the development of the company’s first lifestyle advertising campaign, shot by photographer Peter Lindbergh – iconic black and white print images featured David Yurman designs on notable faces in fashion, such as Kate Moss, Amber Valetta, Naomi Watts, Natalia Vodianova, Gisele Bundchen and Kate Upton.

David Yurman is a premier American luxury jewelry brand with a mission to share in life’s exceptional moments. Artistic inspiration, craftsmanship and unconventional yet elegant designs are at the core of the brand. The Yurman’s natural understanding of color and art yields signature jewelry designs; diamond, pearl, and gemstone jewelry and Swiss-crafted timepieces that are renowned for capturing the essence of relaxed American luxury.

Yurman has received a wide variety of industry accolades and awards from peers and associates alike. She and David were both proud recipients of the JIC (Jewelry Information Center) Gem Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004, and were presented in 2007 with the Savannah College of Art & Design’s Etoile Award in recognition of their contributions to American jewelry design. Sybil also received the Women’s Jewelry Association’s Hall of Fame Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008.

A commitment to philanthropy and community is a priority for Sybil Yurman. In 2001, The Yurman Family Foundation was founded as a means to provide support to a variety of organizations. Through the Foundation, charitable organizations such as The Breast Cancer Research Fund, The Make-A-Wish Foundation, and the Whitney Museum of Contemporary Art are supported.

R. PRECIOUS MOLOI-MOTSEPE is a leading businesswoman,

entrepreneur and philanthropist in South Africa and was named one of the countr y’s Most Influential Women in 2012. She believes fashion has an impor tant role to play in economic development and social change, and in self-realization. Over the past decade, through her company African Fashion International, she has enabled African designers to take their rightful place on the fashion runways of the world. She is also CEO of the Motsepe Family Foundation.

DR. PRECIOUS MOLOI-MOTSEPE

Born and brought up in Soweto, Dr. Moloi-Motsepe grew up with a profound awareness of the strong need for social and political change in South Africa.

She was only seven years old when she saw her own grandmother die from the complications of hypertension, a chronic disease that should have been routinely treated. This fueled her ambition to become a doctor to work to prevent such needless death. She studied medicine at the University of the Witwatersrand as well as Stellenbosch University, ultimately pursuing paediatrics and specializing in women’s health. She worked as a doctor in South African public hospitals and as a general practitioner for 20 years, which contributed further to her interest in development issues.

Working in the U.S. at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond from 1991 to 1992, she became increasingly interested in women’s health. On her return to South Africa in 1993, she opened one of Johannesburg’s first women’s health clinics. In 2000, she spoke on “Women and Health in the Workplace” at the Global Summit of Women. She has also served as President of the Cancer Association of South Africa from 2002 to 2007 and received the Elizabeth Tshabalala Award for Raising Breast Cancer Awareness in 2012. Other noteworthy awards include: in 2011, under the auspices of the Global Fund and of Friends of the Global Fund, she was appointed Champion for Africa by Gift From Africa, aiming to mobilize private-sector support in Africa to fight HIV/AIDS, TB and malaria; the IWFSA – Excellence Award in recognition of sterling contribution to business and community; in 2015, recipient of the Enactus Entrepreneurship Award as well as the Humanitarian Award from Keep A child Alive, which is run by the Alicia Keys Foundation.

AFI’s properties now include: AFI Fashion Week Joburg, AFI Fashion Week Cape Town; fashion development programs AFI Fastrack and AFI NextGen; online lifestyle portal AFI Experience; online retail portal AFI Privé; and associated properties AFI Awards and AFI Fashion Masterclasses.

In 2002, she took the helm of the Motsepe Family Foundation, a philanthropic initiative that she and her husband, mining magnate Patrice Motsepe, founded. The couple are now part of The Giving Pledge, an international movement founded by Warren Buffett and Bill Gates, whose members commit to donating half their family wealth to development causes.

Additionally, she pioneered African luxury fashion through her establishment of African Fashion International, believing it was vital to build a critical mass of globally recognized African design talent. Through her efforts, several African designers have been launched in New York, Paris and London, including David Tlale, Thula Sindi, Eleni Labrou and locally Rich Mnisi, Khothatso Tsotetsi and Tuelo Nguyuza. Her initiatives also attracted international fashion attention from the likes of legendary fashion guru Suzy Menkes, currently International Editor of Vogue Online, and creator of New York Fashion Week, Fern Mallis, to African fashion events. The late Franca Sozzani, then Editor-in-Chief of Vogue Italia, subsequently dedicated a whole issue to showcasing African designers and models.

One of the Motsepe Family Foundation’s most recent projects was the March 2017 launch of The Little Black Book, a resource guide for everything from health to entrepreneurial queries for women. In recognition of her continuing interest in women’s issues, Dr. MoloiMotsepe serves on the Harvard Kennedy School’s Women’s Leadership Board, which addresses gender equality in the workplace. She is also a past member of the World Economic Forum Global Agenda Council on population, which she chaired in 2014.

Dr. Moloi-Motsepe anchored development initiatives in the fashion sector, injecting an entrepreneurial consciousness and aiming to ensure that designers are as capable of succeeding with the business of fashion as they are in the world of design. She believes that a key to competing successfully in the global fashion market is combining highquality design and craftsmanship with Africa’s heritage and history in a distinctive fashion package. She has also ensured that her concern for welfare overlapped with mobilizing the power of fashion through projects such as the Design for Life Breast Cancer Campaign.

Having inherited a classic sense of style from her elegant mother, Dr. Moloi-Motsepe has also always enjoyed the creative flair of the fashion industry. In 2007, she acquired events company Leisureworx and used it as a vehicle to build African Fashion International (AFI), a platform of properties that enables social and economic development in the continent

by Franca Sozzani’s son, the Emmy Award-nominated film director Francesco Carrozzini, and by Norway’s HRH Crown Princess Mette-Marit on behalf of Fashion 4 Development.

She will be recognized for her outstanding efforts in promoting African fashion designers through African Fashion International as well as supporting the empowerment of disadvantaged women.

IMONE CIPRIANI founded and manages the Ethical Fashion

Initiative, a flagship program of the International Trade Centre and joint agency of the United Nations and World Trade Organization.

He has made it his mission to build a more responsible and sustainable fashion industry, by transforming it into a vehicle of poverty reduction and of empowerment of women throughout the developing world. The Ethical Fashion Initiative enables artisans who live in marginalized conditions – in Africa, the Caribbean and Asia, as well as Afghanistan, to become regular suppliers of international fashion and lifestyle brands.

Since its inception, the Initiative has also evolved to work with emerging African designers to promote their talent at an international level and thus, support more forms of Made in Africa production.

He has consulted for a host of UN and international agencies. He also designed and managed development cooperation projects in Indonesia, India, Vietnam, China, Tunisia and Bangladesh.

The Ethical Fashion Initiative has created a training centre for African migrants in Italy and is now engaged in a large project aimed at addressing the root causes of migration from Africa.

While Cipriani has years of experience working in the developing world, he was born in Tuscany, the historic centre of the Italian luxury accessories industry. After studying in Florence, the centre for “Made in Italy” quality, he worked in the Italian shoe and leather industry. He brings a deep understanding of quality and production to the Ethical Fashion Initiative’s objectives to create desirable fashion in some of the world’s most challenging environments.

A multitude of international brands including Brother Vellies, Camper, Chan Luu, Edun, Mimco, Osklen, Karen Walker, Sass and Bide, Stella McCartney, United Arrows and Vivienne Westwood work with the Ethical Fashion Initiative.

Cipriani worked previously in Ethiopia, where he managed a large intervention by UNIDO (United Nations Industrial Development Organization) aimed at improving the national leather industry. He also worked in both Ethiopia and Kenya to set up strategic frameworks to develop viable leather industries.

He directed an organization (PISIE) that offered training and capacity building to leather industry entrepreneurs from the developing world. He also directed a private company, CESECA, which offered services to Italian footwear and leather companies in quality control, technological innovation, training and delocalization of production to Asia.

Iman was an instant success in the fashion world and a muse for fashion designers including Yves. St. Laurent, Versace, Calvin Klein and Donna Karan. During her 14 years as a model, she worked with top photographers Helmut Newton, Richard Avedon, Irving Penn and Annie Liebovitz.

Presently, Iman is Founder and CEO of IMAN Cosmetics, Skincare and Fragrances, a beauty company that created the first cosmetics and skincare collection designed for all women with skin of color. In addition to running a global beauty company, she is actively involved in several charities, including The Children’s Defense Fund, Action Against Hunger and the RAISE HOPE FOR CONGO campaign, which aims to build a permanent and diverse constituency of activists who advocate for protection and empowerment of Congolese women and girls. She also works closely with the Dr. Hawa Abdi Foundation, whose mission is to create access to basic human rights in Somalia through building sustainable institutions in healthcare, education, agriculture, and social entrepreneurship.

Iman is the author of two books; I AM IMAN (Universe, 2001), an autobiographical sketchbook of her career and THE BEAUTY OF COLOR, The Ultimate Beauty Guide for Skin of Color (Putnam Penguin 2005), the first beauty and makeup book that truly addresses skin tones across the spectrum.

Iman lives in New York City, is the mother of two daughters, Zulekha Haywood and Alexandra Jones and is the widow of the visionary artist David Bowie.

y vision of journalism wouldn’t be shared by my American colleagues. In fact, when I explained what drives me and what my aims are to my professors while completing a Master’s program at Columbia University, they told me I had probably chosen the wrong career.

do feel a strong responsibility to be objective and unbiased, to communicate the most complete information to my audience. But this is not all for me. I see journalism as a tool to impact the world surrounding me, to make it fairer, to give a voice to those who wouldn’t have one and to force whomever is guilty – whether it’s a mafia affiliate or a corrupt or unethical politician – to be held accountable.

I kept working with one rule in mind: since I understood that not much happens in Italy, even after a scandal surfaces, I decided I would persist – time and time again – until I could find some justice for the victims of the stories on which I was reporting.

If you can’t fix a situation with a reportage, try again, and then again, until it works.

In fact, growing up in the Berlusconi-led Italy was, for me, very seminal. I remember protesting against the corruption of the first Republic when I was 9 years old, and getting very frustrated by seeing the same behavior happening over and over again through the years, as if no preceding scandal was unbearable enough. My frustration came to an end when I joined a team of brave reporters in 2006, at the age of 20, and I had the chance to be active about all sorts of injustices.

After working for Annozero, the most followed and controversial political talk show in Italian State television, I was part of a group of 12 reporters who started a newspaper in 2009 (Il Fatto Quotidiano, today among the best-selling in the country). Once again, I was working in an atypical context, since my boss’ request was to simply do our job, without any regard for the powerful or for people that could have (and did) make our lives very difficult through lawsuits and intimidations. This might seem normal – a journalist being the watch dog of the powerful rather than the pet – but in Italy, it’s often not the case. As great as it was to work for my newspaper, for which I still write today, I started feeling the need to go deeper into stories, to have more time to research and produce stories with the potential of having a greater impact.

I started traveling my country telling stories of people forced to live in houses infested with asbestos and getting sick because of it, among many others, investigating the lack of safety measures that killed 7 people in the Thyssenkrupp fire, chasing after those politicians who were colluding with the Italian mafia (such as Marcello Dell’Utri, former

I started working on my first documentary when I was studying in New York with the aid of Newsweek magazine. It focused on the women behind the mob; those who run the clans in the most powerful and rich crime organization worldwide, the ‘Ndrangheta. Spending time with them, exploring the drug trade between New York and Milan, getting ahold of telephone tappings and surveillance videos in which, for instance, they order murders with electric saws, made me realize there is another aspect of this job that I value: the fact that I get to explore and experience so many realities that I would otherwise know nothing about.

Caivano, 25 km north of the city. Parco Verde, the biggest drug dealing “piazza” in Caivano, is impenetrable. There are eyes watching at all times to make sure nobody gets in, and very often, this is a job for the local children. I was very interested in finding out what life’s like for the almost 600 kids living there.

In this town, where local bosses (according to police records) rent each street for about 100,000 euros a month to drug dealers, with the guarantee that no police will bother the drug market, kids are very aware of who is in charge.

14-year-old Carmen explains how the Camorra (Mafia) is helping her and her mother now that her brother – a Mafia affiliate – went to prison.

She’s been aware of who deals and who kills, she says, since the age of 6, when a man was shot dead in front of her for the first time.

I then worked on other projects, but it was only when Franca Sozzani asked me to become Special Envoy for Fashion 4 Development, that I decided to focus more on matters of human rights.

I figured that what had always driven me – the desire to fix injustices – could now be at the very core of my work. I spent a lot of time figuring out the best way to be of use and to honor the important job Evie and Franca had given me. I decided that in order to do that, I had to dedicate my skills and my time to telling stories of human rights violations, making them as widely known as possible so that people would have a tough time ignoring them.

Her classmate, Mario, also witnessed an execution ten years ago: that of his father. While we were filming, Mario asked a friend of his older brother, who also died, to help him beat up a kid who was “disrespecting me”. Just like Francesca or Maicol, the other main characters of this documentary, Mario is at the age at which he has to choose his path: he can either join the local gangs or stay in school. In fact, it is the local school, or better the principal who was running it, at the center of this story.

Exploring many different stories, I found one worth telling. Interestingly enough, I didn’t need to go to developing countries, nor to places blended by wars or extreme poverty to find the worst violations of very basic human rights.

Her name is Eugenia Carfora and for the past 10 years, she’s been fighting her very personal, daily battle: bring kids to school and keep them there as much as possible, because when they are not in class, most often, they are in the streets learning a very different and dangerous job. And even when kids want to stay out of trouble, trouble seems to find them. The only playground in town, for instance, is surrounded by junkies walking around 6-year-olds with syringes protruding

This story takes place less than 100 km south of Rome. After the Gomorra saga attracted the attention of the press, making doing business so much more difficult for the mob, most of the drug trading moved from Scampia and other neighborhoods in Naples to a small town called

from their arms. One of the kids’ favorite games is mocking the junkies: they walk like them, imitate facial tics, and count how many syringes encrusted with blood they manage to find.

The local mayor – a man who in his office carried pictures of Mussolini along with a vast collection of fascist symbols – informed Carfora that she didn’t maintain the minimum number to keep the school open (she had 593 students, the minimum was 600). With that, the school was closed and the kids scattered into other facilities nearby – only no other principal would check to see if the students were in class, as Carfora would do every morning, calling the parents and driving to their homes or around Caivano to collect those who wouldn’t show up by 8 am.

When Ms. Carfora started working in her school, it was dirty, with dead birds in the bathrooms and guns buried in the school’s courtyard. Years later, it became an example for the whole region, with laboratories in which to learn computer skills, jobs of all kinds, languages and arts. Ms. Carfora’s dream was to create a school filled with opportunities, and one that was extremely understanding toward the issues of kids who often have one or both parents in jail, and ensure that no one is left behind. “I promise, you don’t have to stay in class. Just come to school today, and we’ll take it from there,” I heard her saying to a young girl. There was only one problem: her work started paying off, kids were attending classes like never before, and the local mobs became increasingly frustrated by the absence of their young soldiers.

This documentary was meant to tell a positive story: that, of a teacher who was saving kids one at a time in a very troubled place, where 36 children died just in recent years, due to Mafia conflicts, drugs, accidents and a thick net of pedophiles well rooted in the area. But while filming, it became yet another example of how easily unjustifiable decisions continue to be made in Italy, where everybody knows what’s going on but nobody intervenes. Even the former Minister of Education, informed of this situation, granted me an interview stating that with the closing of the school that the Mafia had won, and declared her powerless about it.

On a more complex level, what probably scared the people who rule Caivano, was that Ms. Carfora’s work was generating hope and it was spreading around. For example, there was one square next to the school that was used for drug trading, where cages with guard dogs were used to scare off intruders. She managed to get rid of the dogs and dealers and used it as a playground for the kids.

I know this film will not change the lives of these kids, but I do believe that bringing awareness – as F4D teaches – is a good place to start.

And forcing people to open their eyes might accomplish some little miracle: reopening that school, in a land with no hope, could be just what these kids need to understand that not every scandal goes unpunished, and to give them a chance to be the ones who will write their own future.

The day of the Mayor’s and other elected officials’ inauguration, people watched from the windows, clapping and unrolling white sheets as a sign of support. That was the turning point when, in Ms. Carfora’s opinion, it was decided that the school was too dangerous and had to be closed. And thus, it happened.

Jnifen also became an advocate for civil and human rights, making good use of her celebrity to further various humanitarian causes. She is currently an Ambassadress for Action Innocence, a private voluntary organization that helps to protect children’s dignity and integrity on the web against the risks of pedophilia and sexual abuses. In the past, she cooperated with Telefono Azzurro and worked for Inter Campus, an organization that gives back the right to play to thousands of needy children, using the values of sports and the game of football as educational tools. She joined F4D officially in 2017 as a Goodwill Ambassador to the organization.

She started her career with Rai 1 , and went on to present a number of programs on various Italian channels about culture, diversity, minority rights and women’s rights, bridging cross-cultural divides between Europe and Middle Eastern countries. In 2004, she presented the Le Iene Show on Italia 1 , then shortly afterwards La Grande Notte on Rai 2 .

Her contribution to this prime-time program was rewarded with a Television Oscar in March, 2007. In 2009, Jnifen started work on a new project for an international television channel: Nessma TV Arabic .

It made me take a closer look at what I was doing in New York while working on my previous collection: it was contemporary with a fixed price point and I couldn’t go up in quality, yet I was being pushed by the market to go down in both – cheaper and more of it. I started to feel conflicted between what I believed, and what I was making. That’s how Gabriela Hearst was born, combining both lives: the countryside that brought me up, and the urban capital where I became a woman.

was traveling back and forth several times a year from my homeland of Uruguay where I was raised off the grid and now living on a cattle and sheep ranch. I was determined not to be the generation that lost the richness and purity of the wholesomeness that surrounded me all my life. Such a sharp contrast from my lifestyle in New York. On the ranch, I found myself back in a not “readymade” way of life and a somewhat timeless existence, not dependent on the modern conveniences afforded a 21st century lifestyle. No AC or central heating, just fireplaces. Shutters and doors were kept closed in the summer during the day to keep the heat at bay. Walls had to be thick to maintain the coolness. Our habits adjusted to nature and its cycles. Uruguay used to be considered a temperate country, and now because of climate change, we are moving toward one that is subtropical. Nothing is thrown away because it can be repurposed. Even an empty can of paint can be used as a bucket to wash the horse’s mane.

I recall asking my Foreman once if we could change the water heater from the bathroom, as the water pressure would have five minutes max of warmth. His answer was, if he could find another place to put it. “New” has to be an absolute necessity.

The world around us is changing so fast and I am possessed by a determination to preserve quality. I find myself slowing down and diving into learning from what had been successful in the past and still have an impact on the future. “Old is the new cool,” my millennial brother claimed.

We launched in Fall, 2015 with a resolution to put quality on the table, preserving craftsmanship. And after extensive research on sourcing, we discovered that quality is getting scarcer to find. We are two years in and we are a profitable, young luxury company that is conscious of the environment, and attracts customers with a shared desire. In a challenging retail space, we are successfully performing.

The more aware you are of the situation, the more you see. The alternative to not being awake to this reality is a type of death. Nature doesn’t belong to us; we belong to nature.

Even positive statements urging us to “save the planet” seem detached from the reality that we need to save humanity. Earth will not support us if we continue as we have, as it will become an inhospitable environment for humans to flourish. We have become the top predators in a relatively short time. What are we doing with this power? It is time to move toward a global consciousness and evolve. “Think global, act local,” Buckminster Fuller said. The alternatives are here, the tools to march into the future and restore as much as we can are accessible and at our finger tips.

How can a young collection with limited brand awareness be doing this? We had some theories that we wanted to explore and implement, of course, with our own initial doubts and insecurities, but once these ideas proved themselves effective, we knew we were on the right path.

OME OF THESE THEORIES OR BELIEFS THAT WE PUT INTO PRACTICE ARE:

AN UNCOMPROMISING COMMITMENT to quality, starting with the “ingredients”. We believe that when we support quality, we are supporting our passion. We use mills and factories that are multi-generational and in most cases, still family run. These are people who have spent more than a lifetime perfecting their product or craft. This choice guides us in ensuring authenticity in our product. It is well documented that the fashion industry is the second polluter after the oil industry. Knowing your suppliers and the social component of who is making your product is key.

A COMMITMENT TO MAINTAINING OUR environment in all business decisions and initiatives. It is the paramount issue to which we should be paying attention. President Obama identified it as the top threat to our national security. Al Gore said we are witnessing the first climate war with Syria. President Macron vowed to fight climate change. While here in America it is still debatable. Sustainability is not a marketing tool, it must be a daily practice and habit.

simple, but successful idea for us was using dead stock fabric (repurposed) from top mills, and creating limited edition series from them, which is true luxury. Several of our collections utilized pre-existing materials for this purpose.

We first presented this idea for Fall, ‘17.

I am writing this piece to share what we’ve learned so far and worked for us. There is so much more to learn. But I have noticed that in the past two years, every decision we have made where we consider the environment first, has been an efficient one and good business practice.

Being strategic with and in control of our distribution plan prevents overproduction and saturation, as well as has enforced our margins, and we are partnering with retailers that we can grow with, who know their customers. Getting to know your partners and clients directly is both informative and rewarding.

My pet peeve is plastic; I absolutely hate plastic. Consumers forget that plastic is petroleum based. It was overwhelming for me to realize that every garment you see people wearing around at one point was wrapped in plastic. Flexible packaging is a multi-billion dollar industry with zero ecological waste management alternatives. Landfills and incineration are considered the two worst environmental options. But the alternative is here in a product like TIPA, a compostable solution which was developed by Israeli software designer, Daphna Nissenbaum, and launched in the market place a year ago.

Another thrilling project for us, which was spearheaded by my husband, was actually producing fine wool suiting from the wool off our ranch. It took a year of coordination and testing with the Italian mills and the ranch. But finally we have it and it’s come full circle – from farm to closet.

My team is made up mostly of mothers or mothersto-be. So for us, it serves both a personal and professional purpose. We feel a deep concern for what we are leaving our children. I come from a culture where you have to leave your children better off than where you started and this is not the current state of affairs. How can we move forward? We need to wake up.

TIPA packaging is transparent and mimics plastic, but with the ability to be 100% decomposable within 24 weeks when discarded with your other compostable goods.

With accessible solutions such as this, it is up to consumers, but government must also demand these changes. We have begun the process of implementing TIPA packaging in the front and back of house. At the moment, I am personally checking where we can reduce waste or coming up with alternative solutions. Ask your mills if they have organic cottons, recycled polyesters, ethically sourced viscose and silk. And you would be surprised to find that most of the top mills do. Exchange knowledge with other designers and brands regarding sustainable practices. Another

Our ultimate vision and dream is one of transparency: to craft a timeless design product with the utmost quality available, and a clear conscience knowing we did our ethical homework for the greater good of Mother Earth and our customers.

who struggled interminably to pull themselves and their families out of poverty, while still hanging onto their dignity. My mind marveled at the pink bulbs of hope, spread across fields of forsaken lives.

We also provide sustainable, technology-driven entrepreneurial platforms that can allow young people around the world to self-organize and succeed with minimal resources. A single ‘change maker’ can transform not just his or her life, but that of the family, community and even the world.

Drawing strength from that hope, we shaped our purpose and determination to offer financial support to women, to hopefully free them from the endless cycle of deprivation and reliance on charity. Grameen Bank invented micro-lending to give these women financial resources in the form of small loans. These women brought their own hard work, wisdom and inspiration to build small businesses and nurture an enlightened reality in spite of their harsh history. The lotus of hope flowered in their hearts and minds as they began to behold new horizons. Their heads rose with dignity, looking above and beyond the rotting swamps.

We want each and every person we touch to be a source of change and a change maker for life. It is this core value that inspired the lotus symbol in our logo. A lotus is a symbol of purity. This is a concept I realized first-hand during many visits to the remote villages of Bangladesh. Walking alongside Nobel Peace Laureate, Professor Muhammad Yunus, we traversed miles of dirt paths leading through the fields of muck.

I would observe the women pluck the lotuses. In the expansive filth, the lotus blossoms thrived; each bloom towered proudly, untouched by its surrounding gloom.

The lotus seemed to embody attributes such as purity, strength, and determination – and it became, in my eyes, a powerful symbol of empowerment.

The world we live in is painted with so much suffering, and none of us is immune to it. The suffering can be useful if it makes us stronger and more resilient.

Like a lotus, we too can rise, fortify our resolve and stand upright like the flower’s sturdy stem. Each of us has within us the opportunity to thrive in adversity and to become, like the lotus, a symbol of hope – AND A SOURCE OF CHANGE.
