INTRODUCTION Welcome to the Summer Issue! The pandemic has massively affected the fashion industry but some positive changes were seen: 64% of shoppers decreased their spending on new clothing and footwear since the beginning of the pandemic. EY.com Ebay reports in 2020 that 66 million preloved items found their new home! fashionunited.uk Second hand clothing resale has grown 21 times faster than the retail apparel market over the past three years! forbes.com In this issue we’ve teamed up with brands who can help readers continue positive changes in the fashion industry from choosing natural fibres on pages 14-15 to becoming more conscious of our wardrobes on pages 10-11. The aim of the issue is to equip readers with small positive changes we can continue to make as we exit lockdown. If you enjoy the content follow us on Instagram via the QR code on the opposite page or sign up to our newsletter on our website. Happy Reading! The FASH Forward team X

SCREENTIME INSPIRATION PRE-LOVED & TAILOR-MADE Why not take style inspiration from the lead stars of the most-watched shows over lockdown? Beth Harmon (The Queen’s Gambit) and Marianne (Normal People) both had vintage and sustainable influences in their outfits inspiring us to think pre-loved and tailormade for our post-pandemic wardrobes.
FASH FORWARD FAVOURITES FOR: PRE-LOVED Pre-Loved Thrifty, Ireland thriftify.ie @thriftify
Normal People’s on-set stylist describes how she envisions Marianne from the book as “...someone who’s sustainable and wears mostly secondhand.” (Mugan as featured in Refinery 29, 2020)

VINTAGE There is also a lot of vintage clothing inspiration to be taken from the 70’s style outfits in The Serpent. While the show had a big influence on the Spring/Summer 2021 collections across high street stores, why not look for vintage options to re-create looks from the series. • Most of us wear only 20% of our clothes (if that) and having a full wardrobe can actually mean you lose track of your favourite pieces.

• It means we only keep the items we enjoy and love wearing, making us feel fantastic every day.

CAPSULE WARDROBE BENEFITS:
• It allows us to purchase quality items that can last a lifetime (and even get passed down to family members).
Re-working your wardrobe to work for you doesn’t have to mean you throw everything away, we are now living in a time where there are so many great options to re-purpose, donate and swap our clothes. As they say one person’s trash is someone else’s treasure.

FROM TRASH TO CASH, UPCYCLING WASTE FABRICS
WRITTEN BY: KOYE ADESANYA, CREATIVE DIRECTOR mojokojo.com @mojokojouk Ruby Okoro
We collected and stored bags of assorted waste fabrics, what we describe as ‘waste’ are fabric cut offs from bulk garment production. We wanted to re-use the fabrics to make something completely new, rather than throw them away. Since we introduced our Sustainable collection, our wallets have been the most popular. Our wallets are achieved through a process of layering pieces of waste fabric and using lining to make the wallet firm.

MOJO KOJO:
We are now working on a new design, patchwork joggers. Each square patch is 9 by 9 inches and about 40 pieces are used to make one pair. This means we used about 3,240 inches squared of patch fabric. The non patches are made from two early jogger samples. To make these joggers, the cut pieces are placed onto a sewing pattern to make an accurate garment.

FASH FORWARD TOP TIP: When making purchases, consider natural fibres as these last longer, feel better, are great for recycling and generally have less environmental impact than plastic fabrics, such as polyester and nylon. One of the most exciting current brands using Piñatex is House of Marici, discover their collections at: houseofmarici.com
