OFFICE BEARERS PRESIDENT

Disha Zutshi — Community for UMSU

Hi, I’m Disha (she/her). I’m an international student from India studying Arts, currently in my third year of Politics and Psychology. I have served as your General Secretary for the year 2022/23, and it would be my honour to represent you as Community’s candidate for President.

Community has made sure that UMSU’s structures work for, and not against students. We have implemented widereaching Constitutional reforms, created the Union Mart to expand UMSU’s support to students in need, fought for (and won!) changes to CAPS and the WAM system, secured $4000 grants for all international students, brought student life back on campus but also continue to fight for accessible education and so much more. We have consistently delivered the change needed to make UMSU more accessible and present than ever, and 2023 will be no exception.

This is only possible with a transparent, efficient and wellgoverned UMSU, this year as your General Secretary, I have been able to bring stability to the organisation at a time where we did not have a CEO, had missing staff members and were covering from the pandemic and over that a shift from the Union House. It is now time to build on the stable foundation and push UMSU to have a stronger say, a better branding and a closer stakeholder relation. Proudly can I say that we have fulfilled the promises that we made! And brought the diversity in UMSU both in staff and student representatives!

For an UMSU that’s by your side, remember to vote [1] Community for UMSU in all positions, your community fighting with you!

Rebuild our UMSU

Hey, I’m Patrick and I’m running for UMSU President because I believe our Union can do better!

I’m a third year student studying Commerce, and I’ve had experience in a number of student clubs, and on Clubs & Societies Committee. I’ve seen how hard students work to make their clubs the best they can be – and I believe they should be rewarded for it.

For too long, the Union has been governed by some, for some. I’m running to give the Union back to students, and put the power in their hands.

Our Union should spend its resources on hosting fun events, supporting student clubs, and making student services cheaper.

Student life at Uni is made possible by the club executives who volunteer their time for others, and they should be the first people our Union supports. Clubs affiliated with UMSU struggle with the burden of administration, paperwork and bureaucracy. They deserve a Union which is there to help, to serve, and to provide much greater financial resources to them.

Rebuild Our UMSU is a grassroots movement of students who want everyone to have the best possible experience at Melbourne Uni - and we’ve got a plan to make that happen. If elected, we’ve committed to handing the Union back to those it exists for: students. Stay tuned to our socials for details of how we’re going to make the Union work for students again. We’ll work to cut the everyday expenses students incur getting to uni, and bring back a space in the Union buildings for students to socialise and host events.

The only way we can deliver on our promises is if you Vote 1, Rebuild Our UMSU, when online voting opens on September 4th.

Patrick Irwin —

Being an UniMelb student, I know exactly the difficulty and challenges they are facing in all aspects, ranging from academic life, to job hunting. After receiving guidance from uni, mainly student union, I started to interact with the society and make the most of life on campus, thus I would like to be President to address the common issue and improve students community. On the other hand, I also took leadership role in some UniMelb student run club and worked as student representative in faculty for organising events. In this sense, I would like to apply my communication skills, public speak techniques and leadership to give any assistance that students need as the President

PRESIDENT CONT.

Nishant Sahoo

I am Nishant Sahoo(he/him), an International student from India. excited and honoured to announce my candidacy for the position of General Secretary of the University of Melbourne Student Union (UMSU). With unwavering dedication to improving the student experience and fostering a vibrant campus community, I am committed to positively impacting our university’s environment for every student, including those from LGBTQ+, people of colour, and students with disabilities.

As a student from a backward region, I know firsthand how difficult it can be to pursue higher education, especially in a foreign country. I am driven by the desire to contribute to the well-being and success of students who may face similar hardships. If elected as General Secretary, I will work tirelessly to bridge the gap between students from diverse backgrounds and ensure that each student feels supported and empowered to thrive academically and personally.

I will be a strong advocate for the rights and well-being of LGBTQ+ students, people of colour, and those with disabilities. I will collaborate with relevant student organizations and support services to address their unique concerns and ensure their voices are heard at every level of decision-making.

Creating safe spaces on campus is essential to fostering a sense of belonging for all students. I will work closely with UMSU’s Queer, Indigenous, Disabilities, and People of Colour departments to ensure the availability and accessibility of support services and resources that cater to the specific needs of these communities.

Together, let us create a campus where diversity is celebrated, inclusion is embraced, and every student is provided with the support and resources they need to succeed. I humbly request your support and vote to make my vision of a more inclusive and equitable university a reality. Together, let’s make the University of Melbourne experience exceptional for every single student!

Enzhe (Kevin) Li — Community for UMSU

Hi Unimelb peeps, my name is Enzhe Li but please call me Kevin, I am a first year JD student and I am immensely proud to be a part of the Community team this year, and I am honoured to put forward my name as the Community candidate for General Secretary.

As someone who moved to attend secondary education in a country I did not speak the language for, and then had to pack up my life in Adelaide to move across state borders for university, only to arrive in a city and a community in lockdown, I am acutely aware of the impact of student-led, student-run organisations as the beating heart of campus life. Even as the world shut down around us, it is the students, the clubs, the union, that kept a semblance of life and normality to the student experience.

Now, away from lockdown, it is the union that continues the fight for student’s rights, against shady companies that aim to rip off students, against university management that places profits before basic student needs, and against the apathetic, bureaucratic, out-of-touch and extremist elements that sought and continues to seek to shift the union away from students towards serving their own political agenda.

It is with this in mind that I ask, all of you, to vote for an UMSU that’s by your side, vote for an UMSU that is doing what matters to the student body, to VOTE [1] Community for UMSU in all positions, your community fighting with you! :3

6 GENERAL SECRETARY

EDUCATION (ACADEMIC AFFAIRS) OFFICER

Nishant Sahoo

I am Nishant Sahoo, and I am running for the position of Education (Academic Affairs) Officer in the UMSU UniMelb elections. As an international student from the beautiful state of Odisha in India, hailing from a backward region, I intimately understand the transformative power of education and the opportunities it brings.

Having personally faced the struggles of adapting to a new culture and education system, I am passionate about ensuring that every international student feels welcomed, supported, and empowered. I want to be the bridge that connects our diverse community, fostering an environment where everyone feels heard and represented.

Furthermore, I firmly believe in the power of collaboration and inclusivity. I will actively engage with students, faculty, and staff to understand your needs and perspectives. Together, we can create an educational system that not only imparts knowledge but also instils critical thinking, empathy, and a passion for positive change.

Being from a region that faces its own educational challenges, I am dedicated to championing the causes of equity and diversity. I will strive to create an environment where every student, regardless of their background, feels valued and has equal access to opportunities.

I am not just running for a position I am running to be your voice, your advocate, and your ally. Together, we can make a difference, empowering each other to achieve our academic goals and create a brighter future.

In conclusion, I humbly ask for your support and vote. Let’s stand united in our pursuit of knowledge and growth. With your trust, I promise to serve you all with dedication, empathy, and unwavering determination. Thank you for considering me as your Education (Academic Affairs) Officer. Together, we can build a stronger, more inclusive academic community at the University of Melbourne.

Vote for Nishant Sahoo, because your education matters!

Julian De Marco and Lucy Rachman Vascotto — Stand Up!

Hi! We’re Lucy (She/Her), a 2nd year Psychology student, and Julian, (He/Him) a 2nd year Literature student, to be your Education (Academic Affairs) Officers in 2024!

The Education (Academic Affairs) Office’s role is to be the bridge between University policy making and students. As your representatives for all matters pertaining to education, we want to elevate student voices to make the University fairer, more inclusive and accessible for all students.

As Education Academic Officers, we would campaign to provide immediate costof-living relief for students, by ending additional upfront subject costs, like paying for lab coats. This would be a step towards promoting equity of access to higher education. In addition, we would fight to lower hurdle requirements for tutorial attendance, bringing it in line with other universities across the state, and reducing the risk of being unfairly failed in a subject.

The Student Representative Network is a powerful tool to ensure students’ voices are directly heard by the University. As Education (Academic Affairs) Officers we would work to increase the visibility of the network and encourage more student engagement across faculties. This would reinforce the role of UMSU as a key representative body covering every student at the University of Melbourne.

We will also fight to forge a more inclusive and fairer space for students - part of this will be pressuring the university to universally adopt a ‘no contest’ extension policy making it easier for students to apply for and receive an extension. In addition, we will streamline the special consideration process for students in difficult or vulnerable situations.

To make this University a fairer and more inclusive place, vote [1] Stand Up!

Stand Up! For More in 2024

Stefan Gavrilov — Rebuild our UMSU

Hi, I’m Stefan! I’m running to be your Education (Academic) Office Bearer for 2024. A Department which advocates for students’ needs in their studies is vital, as is a functional working relationship with the University. Over the past year, the Union has pursued a hostile and unconstructive discourse with the University administration, and that must stop. The University has already made decisions which have financially damaged the Union, and bypassed the Union’s representative system by initiating their own consultative bodies of students.

Instead, the Union should be working with the University, and ensuring that students get the most out of their course, via a genuine interaction with faculty.

Rebuild Our UMSU is a grassroots movement of students who want everyone to have the best possible experience at Melbourne Uni - and we’ve got a plan to make that happen! If elected, we’ve committed to handing the Union back to those it exists for: students. Stay tuned to our socials for details of how we’re going to make the Union work for students again.

EDUCATION (PUBLIC AFFAIRS) OFFICER

Bella Beiraghi and Raphael Duffy — Community for UMSU

Hi, we’re Bella and Raph and we’re running for the Education (Public Affairs) Office to fight for a university run for students and staff - not for profit. We’re student activists who have spent the last few years at Unimelb campaigning against course cuts and fee hikes. We’re outraged by the transformation of universities in Australia into degree factories, with class sizes creeping up year upon year whilst fees continue to rise. We think everyone has a right to education, not just those who can afford ever-increasing fees. This year we helped start the Students Support Staff Strikes campaign, to show solidarity with staff members striking and organising for better teaching conditions. Staff deserve real wage increases, permanent employment and manageable workloads. We have argued that students and staff have a united interest in fighting for a university with properly paid teachers who can give students the quality education they deserve Ultimately, we understand that a university which oversees fee hikes in a cost-of-living crisis, and stonewalls striking workers, all while cutting business deals with climate criminals like the mining company Rio Tinto, is no friend of students. We also know that the Labor government doesn’t have our best interests at heart. The money they’re spending on nuclear submarines and tax breaks for property investors could fully fund affordable housing, free education and liveable welfare for all students. Next year we will be staunch fighters for students against UniMelb’s corporate management and the Labor government. Vote [1] Community for all positions!

Gevindu Wickramanayake — Rebuild our UMSU

Hi, I’m Gevindu, and I’m running for Education (Public Affairs) Officer.

I’m a first-year student, and I believe the role of the Education (Public) Office is vital in having a voice in the political, cultural and policy settings affecting students.

I’m committed to being a voice for students to have the best possible experience at University, and beyond. The Department should fight to ensure policymakers guarantee students’ choice in their education, keep fees at a sustainable level, and support all students to access high-quality education.

Carlos Lagos Martin & Evelyn Thompson — Stand Up!

Hey! We’re Carlos (he/him) and Evie (she/her) and we’re excited to announce our candidacy for Education (Public Affairs) Officers. Building on Carlos’ incredible work as Education (Public Affairs) OB this year, we’re excited to advance our organisation’s commitment to accountability, transparency, and student representation.

During Carlos’ tenure, he diligently prioritised enhancing accountability and transparency within UMSU. By implementing regular reporting mechanisms and refining handover procedures, he ensured that critical information flowed seamlessly, empowering our members with the information they deserve.

Moreover, in collaboration with the Education Department team, Carlos spearheaded the creation of a comprehensive submission to the University Accords that eloquently captured the challenges and concerns our fellow students face on campus.

In 2024, we are committed to building upon these achievements and driving our shared goals even further. We plan to remain unwavering in our dedication to uplifting our organisation and ensuring that student voices are not only heard but also effectuated into actionable change - by continuing to contribute to the University Accords to achieve a better higher education system for all students, by working with the Education (Academic Affairs) Office to ensure better outcomes for students at Unimelb, and by fighting for an educational model that is free, effective and beneficial to students, not University management.

WELFARE OFFICER

Poulomi Sinha

I am committed to fostering a compassionate and supportive environment where the well-being of every student is at the forefront of our endeavors. Recognizing that student welfare transcends academic achievement, I aim to develop programs that address mental, emotional, and physical health needs. From promoting accessible mental health services to ensuring a safe campus environment, I envision a community where students are empowered to thrive not just academically but holistically. Leveraging my experience in healthcare, project management, and community outreach, I will work diligently to create initiatives that are responsive to diverse student needs. By listening and collaborating with stakeholders, we can create a welfare system that recognizes the uniqueness of each individual while fostering a culture of empathy, respect, and inclusivity. As your Welfare Officer, I will serve as a staunch advocate for students’ rights, working tirelessly to make the University of Melbourne a place where everyone can flourish.

Aaron Do — Rebuild our UMSU

Hi, my name’s Aaron, and I’m running to be your Welfare Officer for 2023!

Student welfare is vital to the mission of the Union. Students deserve a Union which will create new spaces on campus to socialise, and relax.

Life is expensive at the moment, and students should be able to get to Uni more cheaply, by public transport, and by car. As your Welfare Officer, I’ll be fighting for changes to use Union resources to make getting to and from campus more affordable.

Divyanshi Sati and Joshua Stagg — Community for UMSU

Hi everyone, we are Divyanshi and Joshua, we will be running for Welfare Officer with Community. Divyanshi is in her second year of Commerce majoring in Marketing and Finance, while Joshua is doing a Juris Doctor.

We aim to combat the cost-of-living crisis by pushing for the Union Mart to be open for five days a week and longer hours, providing textbooks at lower costs, and designing and implementing a welfare grant for missed work shifts.

Isolation and loneliness in a new city are themes that both Divyanshi and Joshua have struggled with as students. Divyanshi moved from India and Joshua from Tasmania. Our different backgrounds enable us to understand the needs of the diverse student body. We intend to provide more information about adjusting to Melbourne, and Australia in general in an accessible format to help you adjust and feel comfortable in your new home.

Furthermore, we aim to address the ever-present mental health issues in our community by advocating for increasing the number of appointments provided through CAPS, reducing waiting times with specialists, and diversifying the practitioners available to accommodate the diverse cultures seen in our student body. Lasting friendships within the university can be difficult to make, so we intend to develop more social events in smaller groups that allow for genuine connections between peers.

We are committed to seeing lasting change and are willing to do the work and push for your rights as students so that you can focus on enjoying your time at UniMelb. So make sure to vote [1] Community in all positions; your community is fighting with you!

WOMEN’S OFFICER

Are you a Woman with an Opinion? I am, and I’m standing for election to Women’s Officer. Here’s my plan:

1. Women’s opinions matter. The university has made strides in LGBT inclusion, but women’s voices must not be overshadowed. I propose to conduct a survey of women students, providing a platform for us to express our views on policies that impact us, such as the provision, or not, of single-sex spaces.

2. Women’s opinions need debate. Universities should be bastions of freedom of expression but the social norm of democratic debate is being dismantled. The President of the university’s staff union and some activists have described students of feminism as “bigots” and “fascists,” respectively. I propose to create a podcast series exploring women’s issues, providing women with the information we need to engage in respectful, reasoned discourse.

3. Women’s opinions are diverse. We are not a monolith and there is no ‘right’ set of beliefs women must hold. We must forge common ground and ensure that all women are included no matter their beliefs, values, politics or religion. I propose to create an online feedback channel ensuring that all women can contribute to the Women’s Department, and that every voice is valued.

University should teach us how to change the world, but is that promise being met for women? Let’s restore our university as a beacon of democratic debate, where everyone’s opinion matters. Together, we can take our rightful place in public discourse. Because we are Women with Opinions.

Visit leeforwomen.com for more information or find me campaigning on campus. Look for the flaming bra flying high above my wheelchair - a symbol of women’s liberation!

Micaela Rynne and Akanksha Agarwal — Stand Up!

Hello! We’re Micaela (she/her) and Akanksha (she/her) and we’re running for the Women’s Department with Stand Up! Campus culture continues to disadvantage women, trans and non-binary people in its systemic structures, and it is crucial that your Women’s OBs are there to represent you. We want to take a stand to deliver positive, progressive, and intersectional changes, and we know that we can do that together with you.

There is a lot of work to be done on our campus, clubs and colleges regarding safety of women, trans and non-binary students, and we saw this through the NSSS report in 2021. We want to continue the fantastic work that the current Stand Up! Women’s OBs, Ngaire and Alessandra have done in getting UniMelb to commit to reviewing their Student Complaints and Grievance procedures. We are focussed on creating an outcome that all students across genders will benefit from. We will also campaign for UniMelb to do more to end period poverty, as only 7 period product vending machines is not enough for a campus of more than 50 buildings – and that’s just the Parkville campus. We want the uni to take period poverty seriously, and we will campaign to do just that.

We’re dedicated to making the Women’s department a place where all women, trans and non-binary – especially BIPOC, queer and gender diverse folk – are supported and advocated for. We’re committed to giving women, trans and non-binary students the education they deserve, one where they are safe and supported right now on campus, and, into the future. We will continue to fight for a campus culture that centres equality, respect, anticolonial and feminist values at its core.

Our goal for the Women’s department is plain and simple – an intersectional, inclusive, safe space for all women, trans, non-binary people [Over word limit]

CREATIVE ARTS OFFICER

ACTIVITIES OFFICER

Jiajie Zheng & Shravya Akkapeddi — Community for UMSU

Provisionally elected unopposed.

Greetings! I am Shravya Akkapeddi (she/ her) running for Creative Arts Officer with Community. I’m a pragmatic and creative woman with a passion for student welfare. I’ve was a committee member for the creative arts department last year. I intricately understand the nuances of the department and am a very organised and outgoing person.

As a lover of the arts, I am excited to join the Creative Arts Community and help shape an inspiring environment for our fellow students. With a background in theatre, I’m dedicated to contributing my skills to craft events that celebrate diversity, and showcase the incredible talents of our community, and ensuring that everyone’s voices are heard and celebrated!

As a Creative Arts OBs, We wish to bring to life three main events for the year 2024. ‘Unimelb Fringe Festival 2024’ - where students can showcase their talents in the fields of theatre, visual arts, music, dance, film, and design. The ‘Arts and Crafts Market 2.0’ - following up on this year’s massive hit and requests from many students who were able to market their talents and even made a profit on their creative exhibits. Lastly, the ‘Creative Meet and Greet’ - where students can meet noted artists and learn about their careers and skills development!

We will create educational and career opportunities for our fellow students through liaison with the university careers department. The contemporary world is a fast-paced one and in the process, many miss out on opportunities. There’s so much more that we want to do, so don’t hesitate to hit us up during election week to find out more. QUEER OFFICER

ENVIRONMENT OFFICER

Binderiya Batzorig and Ryan Mittal — Community for UMSU

Provisionally elected unopposed

Hi everyone, this is Ryan and Binderiya, our pronouns are he/him and she/her. Ryan is a second year Bachelor of Commerce Student (international) from India, and Binderiya is a third-year bachelor of arts student from Mongolia. We are running for the position of queer office bearer at UMSU. We believe that it is important for all queer people, particularly those of diverse backgrounds, to have a voice in our student union.

As international students and queer people of colour, we have experienced challenges growing up including the ‘feeling of not being wanted’. We would give our 100% to make other queer students, regardless of identity or background, to never have to face such a situation in our University. We want to create a space where all queer people feel welcome, supported, and represented. In addition to increasing cultural representation. We will also work to make UMSU’s resources more accessible to queer people of colour, including mental health support, legal advice, and financial assistance.

We have the skills and experience necessary to be a successful queer office bearer at UMSU, as passionate advocates for queer rights and queer people of all backgrounds, we have a proven track record of working to create more inclusive spaces. We are also strong communicators and I am confident to build positive relationships with queer people from all backgrounds.

We urge you to Vote [1] for Community For UMSU for all other positions. We promise to work hard to make UMSU a more welcoming, supportive, and representative space for all queer people.

Jack Walton — Rebuild our UMSU

Hi, I’m Jack, and I’m running to be your Environment Officer in 2024!

I’m a second year student studying Commerce, and I’m keen to make the Environment work for students again.

The Environment Office should be used to advocate for sustainable policies on the University’s part, and preserve the environment on and around campus. For too long the Environmental Office has been used to pursue special agendas instead of doing what matters for conversation and the environment.

Emma Dynes and Jaan Schild — Community for UMSU

Hi, we’re Emma and Jaan and we’re running for Environment Office! We are reaching ‘global boiling point’ according to the United Nations. Everywhere you look, climate carnage is wreaking havoc – mass flooding in Beijing, smoke from wildfires in Canada clogging up New York City and hundreds dying from heat waves in Europe. All reports say Australia is heading towards another Black Summer of unprecedented bushfires - that’s why we need anti-capitalist activists in the Environment Office next year.

Since the school strike for the climate movement, governments and fossil fuel corporations have adopted targets to achieve net zero by 2050 - but the climate crisis is happening now, not in thirty years time! We need urgent action right now. We want to build protest campaigns to push back against our own government’s climate delayism and demand radical, immediate climate action. The federal Labor government has billions of dollars for nuclear powered submarines, tax cuts for billionaires and subsidies for fossil fuel companies. Instead we need to demand the government to rapidly transition to renewables and stop digging up coal, oil and gas.

We need to rebuild the fighting climate movement that Greta Thunberg kick started. It is only through protesting that we can win - just look at any mass movement in history, from the civil rights movement to Black Lives Matter. Through the Environment Office, we will have more resources to build protests on our own campus against the university administration who collaborate with fossil fuel and weapons companies. This year we have organised national days of action against Labor’s climate inaction and the uni’s profiteering from war and militarism. We have also supported social justice campaigns-against racism and fascism in Melbourne. Vote [1] Community for Environment!

Hello everyone! I am Hiranmayi Ramesh, a second year Graduate student pursuing Masters in Management (Marketing) at The University of Melbourne. I have also been the Event Coordinator for the Indian Graduate Students Society and currently function as the Graduate Director of UMSU International. This year I am planning to take up a new role by nominating myself for the position of Media Officer at UMSU. I would like to put forth why I feel I am a good candidate for the role. To start with I am extremely passionate about media & marketing and that was the prime reason I moved to Melbourne to pursue my Graduate studies in Marketing. Secondly, the University and the various clubs and student bodies have played a vital role in my personal and professional development over the last two semesters. And I believe that all the efforts taken by them would not have reached the student masses without the effective functioning of the media department. I believe that by taking up the role of Media Officer, I would be able to invest the skills and experience I have gained through the last two semesters to good use and further help build and strengthen the department. This position would pave the way for me to give back to the student society and further build the legacy the University and UMSU have created over the years. Along with my fellow media officers, I would strive to ensure effective and transparent communication across all channels of media which would further strengthen the bond between the University and the entire student body and create a more diverse, inclusive and harmonious environment for all of us to thrive and build ourselves on. Looking forward to your support and if elected, to better serve you in the future. Thank you.

Joel Duggan, Gunjan Ahluwalia, Jessica Fanwong, and Kien-Ling Liem — Independent Media

Hello, students! This year’s Independent Media team comprises Joel, Gunjan, Jessica and Kien-Ling, all running to be your 2024 Media Office Bearers. With all of us having been involved broadly across the Media Department, we believe we have the expertise and passion to bring an inclusive, diverse and fun experience to this year’s student body. Having been with Farrago for three years, Joel (he/him) has been a sub-editor, staff writer, reporter and currently coordinates Reviews. Gunjan (she/her) is currently a graphic designer under Farrago and Myriad, as well as for student clubs CISSA and MINT. Jessica (she/her) is currently a creative subeditor for Farrago, Radio Fodder subeditor, Reviews Department Social Media Coordinator, student council live-tweeter and has been published in Farrago, Radio Fodder, Myriad, and Inkspot. A current nonfiction staff writer, Kien-Ling (she/ they) has also written for Judy’s Punch and has professional podcasting expertise.

The Media Department has historically upheld values of transparency, inclusivity and diversity, which we plan to maintain during our term. As Media OBs, our vision for the coming year rests on three pillars: improve outreach, revitalise our departments and revamp the Media Office. We need to bring in more students through pushing Farrago in lecture halls across the campuses and across social media, so that we have the range of voices necessary to write and design the kind of Farrago students want to see. From there, we need to give Reviews and Radio Fodder the resources necessary to break into new forms of content, focusing on local music and interviews. Finally, the Media Collective needs a clean and welcoming physical space in which to gather, requiring a big reorganisation of the Media Office as it currently stands. A vote for Independent Media is a vote for bigger and better student media!

CLUBS AND SOCIETIES OFFICER

Qingran Wang

The clubs and societies of University of Melbourne is an irreplaceable asset to all of our students, providing a platform for people from the same background or having a common interest to buddy up and help one another. One could also get help on gaining valuable employment skills and bridging the gap between study and job. As such, I believe that UMSU and the university as a whole should provide more supports to the clubs that are struggling, by both financial and administrative means. As a student with experience in liaising with different stakeholders, I am determined to commit to advocate for the benefits of the clubs and help their needs. My goal is to assist our passionate students and their clubs to flourish and make our university a more vibrate place for all students.

Azalea Rohaizam and Chatarina

Hanny Angelita Teja — Stand Up!

Greetings, everyone!

We’re Azalea (she/her) and Hanny (she/her), and we’re thrilled to be running as Stand Up!’s Clubs and Societies Office Bearers candidates in 2024.

With extensive involvement in various UniMelb clubs, we’re deeply passionate about fostering vibrant and supportive club communities. Azalea is the Founder and President of the Swifties Society, and a member of the Clubs and Societies Committee in 2023. Hanny is the Events Officer at the UniMelb Musical Theatre Association (UMMTA) for 2023, adding valuable experience to our understanding of club dynamics and administration processes. Our vision for the Clubs and Societies department centers around creating an inclusive and welcoming environment for all club members.

Ensuring practical solutions for club executives, our focus is on their needs and success. We aim to enhance the support system for club executives by increasing responsiveness to queries, providing approachable and available support at the office and improving communication via bulletins. Our streamlined processes will offer clear instructions for event planning and governance, backed by accessible online training resources. Additionally, we’re dedicated to assisting clubs in securing funding through budgeting guidance, sponsorship opportunities, and supporting successful grant applications.

We plan to continue hosting events to give back to volunteers such as the “Executives Mixer” and “Awards Night” while expanding support for both new and existing clubs.

We’re eager to merge our passion for clubs with the responsibilities of this role, and we’re excited to make meaningful contributions to the clubs community. Let’s work together to create an even more vibrant and thriving environment for everyone!

Adam Whitehead and Anishaa Jeyakumar — Community for UMSU

Provisionally elected unopposed.

Hi! We are Adam and Anishaa and we share a strong commitment to enhancing the inclusivity and accessibility of our university for all individuals, with a specific focus on empowering students with disabilities. Our vision is to cultivate an environment where every student can flourish and actively participate in university life.

As your Office Bearers, we will work tirelessly to ensure that our campus becomes a model of accessibility. This includes advocating for the mandatory implementation of accessible features during lectures and tutorials and formulating comprehensive guidelines for events that will be inclusive. We strive for a university who creates its policies around the needs of its students with disabilities and most importantly, we want them to be held to account for the success or failure of these policies.

We will continue to build on the work we have already done to foster a close knit community of support and shared resources, as well as use education as a means to raise awareness and dispel the various misconceptions surrounding disabilities. Our goal is to create a space where all students across the spectrum of disability feel heard, valued, and supported. So make sure to vote [1] Community in all positions; your community is fighting with you!

Denzil Minnaar & Ying Kwan Jania Lam — Community for UMSU

Provisionally elected unopposed

We are Denzil Minnaar & Jania Lam. Denzil is a man of colour from South Africa, studying science, and Jania is an international student from Hong Kong. Throughout Denzil’s life living outside South Africa, despite making every effort to integrate himself into the cultures of the countries he has found himself in, he has always felt a keen sense of isolation due to a lack of relatable experiences and cultural representation. As a woman of colour not native to this country, Jania is well-aware of the unique challenges international students must navigate, including the substantial school fees they face when living abroad.

We understand that for many international students aspiring to complete their education, making the huge leap of adjusting to a different culture, language, and being away from family constitutes a significant financial and mental investment. Therefore, we believe it is imperative for the university to create a welcoming environment for the deserving students who have sacrificed so much to be here.

As representatives, our goal is to provide students-of-colour on campus with inclusive and safe spaces, and work with them to make the university a comfortable, safe, and engaging environment for all. We will achieve this by continuing our POC and Bla(c)k collectives, giving students with similar experiences opportunities to gather, network, and foster friendships on campus. Furthermore, we are committed to continuing our fight against racism by listening to student voices, raising awareness about acts of racism on campus, and providing support to those affected.

To nurture a fully inclusive community within our university, we kindly ask you to cast your vote for [1] Community across all positions. Your support will empower us to drive positive transformation and foster a campus environment that genuinely reflects the diversity we value.

SOUTHBANK CAMPUS CO-ORDINATOR

Amy Rogers & Ariel Teo — Southbank Students! For UMSU

Provisionally elected unopposed.

Hi, we are Amy and Ariel, a second year bachelor of music student studying Jazz & Improvisation, and a first year masters of music therapy student respectively. Amy has been a member of the Southbank committee for this position last year, and Ariel will be joining for the first time this year. Southbank is a veritable hub of unparalleled creative activity, and yet, at this campus, we have to work extra hard to make sure our experience is as valued by the university as that of Parkville.

As your Campus Co-ordinators, we will focus on maintaining our current agenda of barbecues, breakfasts, breadbin and collectives, as well as expanding our efforts to host studentled creative events and hold the university to account to ensure that you get the most out of your time here. This student union belongs to you, and is funded by you. Make sure it works for you.

Felicity Patrice Liston — Southbank Students!

For UMSU

Provisionally elected unopposed

Hi, I’m Felicity, a first year Masters of Music Therapy student here at Southbank campus, and I’m excited to be running for Southbank Education Officer. Southbank is home to a true abundance of artists, creatives and performers, and we deserve to be supported. As your Southbank Education Officer, I’m prepared to listen to your voices, and advocate for the support you need.

I will actively seek your feedback to continuously provide support and accessibility to Southbank students. I believe everyone should have access to further education and academic resources. Furthermore, I will work collaboratively with the rest of the Southbank team to continue Southbank’s weekly free BBQs, and I’ll work to restore the breadbin to its rightful home! Nothing is too small a matter to be voiced and heard. Let’s make your ideas become a reality.

SOUTHBANK ACTIVITIES OFFICER

Justine Light De Guzman — Southbank Students! For UMSU

Provisionally elected unopposed.

Justine Light - Southbank Activities Officer Nominee

Hi! My name is Justine (she/her)! I am proud to be a 2nd-year Theatre Student from Singapore! I am really keen to apply for the Southbank Activities Officer because I believe that I have an incredible opportunity to help and lighten the moods of Southbank Artists! As a Filipino coming from Singapore, I have a great passion for meeting the needs of diversification and I believe that my unique perspective as an international student will be an asset to this role. At times, for artists, the University journey is expensive, exhausting, depressing, isolating and time-consuming. I hope to be able to organise activities such as garden lunches, check-in meet ups, showcases, or games day that will allow different faculties to come together, interact and form a formidable community all while relaxing and having fun in between classes.

Being adept to the Parkville campus for my other breadth subjects, I believe that the Southbank campus sits very differently in the entire on-campus student experience. Most Southbank students have very demanding course loads that prohibit them from joining activities that may not fit within their schedules, thus, straying from partaking in student clubs or events held at Parkville. Furthermore, Southbank artists often have very specific needs such as having a short lunch break or being really keen in getting opportunities that put the skills they learn to use. I hope to organise activities that specifically and successfully meet these needs. This year, I have seen the current Southbank team put tremendous and consistent efforts in providing for students and I believe that I

STUDENTS’ COUNCIL

GRADUATE STUDENTS REPRESENTATIVE ON COUNCIL (1 TO ELECT)

Nishant Sahoo

I am Nishant Sahoo, an international student from India, and I am excited to stand for the position of Graduate Students Representative in UMSU. As your representative, I promise to champion the voices and concerns of all graduate students, ensuring a nurturing and inclusive environment. I will advocate for improved academic support, better cultural integration, and enhanced social opportunities. With my passion for fostering a vibrant and cohesive community, I aim to create positive and lasting changes for all graduate students. Together, let’s build a stronger, more united UniMelb experience. Vote for Nishant Sahoo, your voice for progress!

Navam Niles

In this cost-of-living crisis, too many students are struggling to make ends meet while studying. The crisis threatens to undermine innovative research, weaken the university’s pool of academic talent, and risk years of personal and professional investment. I propose three no-regret solutions that could benefit the entire student body. First, create an opt-out enrolment system for GRs looking for temporary or casual work opportunities in the University. Second, consolidate campus-wide social services to provide students with tailored support. Third, establish bi-annual auction that allows students to bid for surplus equipment including computers and furniture.

Yashica Mishra — Community for UMSU

I’m Yashica, and I’m thrilled to be running for Graduate Representative on Council. I believe it’s time for fresh perspectives and proactive change. As a graduate student, I understand the unique challenges we face – from research pressures to work-life balance.

My vision is clear: enhancing academic support, fostering interdisciplinary collaborations, and amplifying graduate voices. With determination and a knack for effective communication, I’ll work tirelessly to ensure your concerns are addressed and your ideas are heard.

Let’s create a vibrant, inclusive, and intellectually stimulating graduate community. Vote [1] Community in all positions, because together, we’ll redefine the graduate experience.

Julien Macandili — Left Action

Graduate students are under the pump. The ‘Melbourne model’ allows the university to charge us exorbitant fees to finish our degrees, while every year we are given less access to resources, and financial support. Many of us are also casual tutors, insecure in our jobs severely underpaid for teaching and marking. We need to turn the tide and fight for better conditions for students and staff at Unimelb. Vote [1] Left Action for an activist representative for graduate students on Council!

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS REPRESENTATIVE ON COUNCIL (1 TO ELECT)

Hiranmayi Ramesh

Hello everyone. I am Hiranmayi Ramesh, a Graduate student pursuing a Masters in Management (Marketing). I am nominating myself for the role of International Student Representative at UMSU. Coming from an international background, I have first hand experience in the realtime struggles of International students. Be it affordable housing or securing an internship, balancing academics or social life experiences, it never comes easier for all of us. If elected, I wish to advocate and be the voice of International students at UMSU and ensure every concern is addressed by collaborating with the University and other supporting student bodies. Thank you.

Akshay Gouri — Left Action

International students are exploited and ripped off by the government and university management. We pay exorbitant upfront fees, while the system denies us access to welfare and support. Education should be a right for all, including those who travel from overseas to study, and not a mere way for governments and rich university executives to rake in billions in revenue.

I stand for accessible and equitable, quality education for all and I will fight for all international students to get it. Vote [1] Left Action!

Nishant Sahoo

I am Nishant Sahoo and an international student from India, I stand before you with an unwavering determination to represent our diverse community as the International Students Representative at UMSU UniMelb. I empathize with the struggles we face being away from home, adjusting to a new culture, and seeking opportunities. If elected, I promise to be the voice of every international student, advocating for better support systems, creating a nurturing environment, and ensuring that no one feels alone. Together, we can build a stronger, united, and inclusive UMSU family. Vote Nishant Sahoo, your advocate and friend.

Hey there! I’m Tianyi, and I’m running to be your Queer Representative on the University of Melbourne Student Union Council.

As a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community, I understand the unique challenges we face. My goal is simple: to amplify your voices and champion your rights. I won’t just be a representative; I’ll be your advocate.

From hosting inclusive events to advocating for gender-neutral facilities, let’s work together to create a more vibrant, accepting, and supportive campus for all queer students. Vote [1] Community in all positions for a more inclusive university experience. Your voice matters!

Hi! I am Clement Wu and I believe I would be an excellent fit for the role of POC Rep due to my strong commitment to personal and organisation growth. Being a part of the students’ council will allow me to actively seek professional development in untangling the university’s daily agenda, staying informed about current issues and trends in education and student affairs. Being a student Councillor is a privilege and will further deepen my sense of responsibility. So make sure to vote [1] Community in all positions; your community is fighting with you!

REPRESENTATIVE ON COUNCIL (1 TO ELECT)

Hannah Gannon — Left Action

Support for students with disabilities is woeful at Unimelb. A recent audit of the university found that it would cost $80m to bring the university up to standard for physical accessibility. This is a tiny fraction of the uni’s estimated $11.3bn in assets and endowments- but this year the university pledged only $3m to improve accessibility. I will fight for Melbourne Uni’s VC to put his money where his mouth is and make the university truly accessible for all. Vote [1] Left Action!

Sameeksha Mudigere Keshav — Community for UMSU

Hey, I’m Sameeksha. It’s been six years since I’ve needed a wheelchair due to a spinal-cord injury. I know both sides of the coin: being disabled and non-disabled. I have been working extensively with the disabilities department on issues of advocacy and support. Not only do I want to improve facility accessibility but expand our community’s access to sport. Our community does not need sympathy, just equity. At the end of the day, I hope my work can bring a smile to your face. Make sure to vote [1] Community in all positions, your community is fighting with you!

SOUTHBANK STUDENTS REPRESENTATIVE ON COUNCIL

(1 TO ELECT)

Hugh Collins — Left Action

Southbank students, despite often feeling a world away from the rest of the university, are subject to the same pressures as our peers at Parkville. The increasing corporatisation of the university model worsens resources and stability for both students and staff, while the impacts of decision-making from management and the student union feel distant. Southbank students need representation that allows us to engage actively and politically with the university, and to mobilise in support of those fighting insecurity. Vote [1] Left Action for an activist Council representative for Southbank!

Jack Doughty — Southbank Students! For UMSU

It is difficult for me to imagine what “personal liberty” is enjoyed by an unemployed person, who goes about hungry, and cannot find employment.

Real liberty can exist only where exploitation has been abolished, where there is no oppression of some by others, where there is no unemployment and poverty, where a man is not haunted by the fear of being tomorrow deprived of work, of home and of bread. Only in such a society is real, and not paper, personal and every other liberty possible.

For students today, crisis is endemic. The cost-of-living is skyrocketing and rents are rising. Inequality and oppression are rife, and climate destruction and war are on the horizon. All the while the rich get richer. Universities are becoming degree factories – every year Melbourne Uni makes super-profits all while cutting courses and slashing staff wages. We need an activist UMSU to encourage students to fight back against the crises that threaten our lives. The cost of living is rising severely as monster profits are gouged from the pockets of ordinary people. The possibility of war and the ongoing destruction of the climate are existential threats to the lives of everyone. Meanwhile Melbourne University is pushing for research into machines of mass murder and are cozying up to climate criminals. Hayley Cheung — Independent Media

Hello! I’m Hayley Cheung, and I’m a politics major and passionate contributor to Farrago Magazine. In my time with The Media Collective this year, two principles have become clear to me: (1) the independence of student media should never be compromised, and (2) the future of student media depends on the integrity, dedication, and vision of those at its helm. It’s my intention to ensure these principles are upheld and continuously fought for. As your representative, you can trust that our student media is not just a reflection of our student body, but a cornerstone of independent thought and expression.

Desmond Ng — Independent Media

Hey! My name’s Desmond and I’m a reviews writer/sub-editor for Farrago! I want to run for Council because I believe that the Media Collective has been imperative for my creative growth in my first year of uni. Once elected, I want to continue being able to provide those opportunities for future students, and advocate for the betterment of student media and to be a voice for the Media Collective to the broader union.

David Nawaratne — Independent Media

Since joining the Media Department, I have met so many brilliant artists from innumerable backgrounds who are obsessed with the same thing - to innovate, create and share. I am adamant on maintaining a media space with diverse, unique voices, where everyone is invited to eat at the table. In times of great uneasiness and isolation, it is the publications like these that tie us together. I intend for Independent Media to be transparent, accountable and a space for honest student reflection.

As a member of the Media Collective, I bring with me over five years of student publication contribution and management. I can guarantee that I will do my best to protect your voice, especially in an increasingly uncertain future.

The University of Melbourne has remained complicit in the destruction of our planet, fostering its relationship with some of the world’s largest carbon emitters, Saudi Aramco and ExxonMobil. It lauds racists and bigots like Robert Menzies, and manufactures weapons which kill Palestinians with Lockheed Martin. Now more than ever students need to stand up against injustice and fight for a better world! Vote [1] Left Action!

EDUCATION COMMITTEE CONT.

Labdhi Gandhi — Left Action

Policy statement not submitted.

Remy Hannan — Left Action

Left Action fights for free education. University fees expose the naked class discrimination of Australia today, where only those with cash deserve an education. Using covid19 as an excuse, UniMelb has been ruthlessly cutting subjects and staff, and actually increasing fees for online classes. Free education was won when the student movement was strong in Australia, and the ever-increasing fees of the past decades demonstrate the ever-increasing encroachment of neoliberalism, where every service in society can only exist if it makes a quick buck. Vote [1] Left Action to turn the tide and win a better education system!

Charlotte Doig — Left Action

I’m running for the Education Committee because we need a student union that prioritises fighting against any and every attack on higher education. The other groups in the student union, Community and Stand Up, think it’s fine to sit down with our millionaire VC Duncan Maskell to ask him nicely for some concessions. But Maskell is happily overseeing staff cuts, wage theft and the eroding quality of education to boost his profit margin. Pleading nicely with the bosses is a dead end strategy. Vote [1] Left Action to make sure the VC can’t get away with ruining our education!

Penelope scacciante — Left Action

While the world is being destroyed by war and climate change and our quality of education deteriorates, Unimelb management welcomes corporate criminals onto campus- whether it’s the Liberal party bigots in the Menzies Institute, or weapons manufacturer Lockheed Martin, which has a research centre at Parkville to design bombs.. For an UMSU that fights for the rights of staff and students, as well as taking a stand on broader social issues, vote [1] Left Action!

So make sure to Vote [1] for Community for UMSU.

Ada Pascoe — Left Action

The climate crisis is getting worse with Labor’s new legislated climate bill. Labor has put forth a bogus 43% emissions reduction target which enables Australia’s fossil fuel industry to expand and accumulate more profits at the expense of the planet. We need a student union that challenges the Labor Party’s crap policies and stands up for climate justice! Vote [1] Left Action to demand that Melbourne University management cuts its ties with major fossil fuel industries!

Lola Bowers — Left Action

The world is on track for 1.5 degrees of warming, the latest IPCC report warned of “hell on earth” if emissions aren’t stopped. The climate crisis is an existential threat. I have been involved in organising some of the biggest climate demonstrations in Melbourne, and have protested Melbourne Uni’s ties to climate criminals like the mining giant Rio Tinto. I want to use the resources Environment Committee to build activism on campus and demand climate justice. Vote [1] Left Action to fight for a better future and a better world!

Isaamul Karim Chowdry — Community for UMSU

Hi, my name is Isaam Chowdry. I will be championing student-centric university union policies. I’m dedicated to amplifying student voices in decision-making, ensuring transparent communication, and fostering an inclusive environment for all. By addressing concerns, streamlining processes, and enhancing student resources, I aspire to create a more dynamic and supportive union that reflects the diverse needs and aspirations of our student body. So make sure to Vote [1] for Community for UMSU.

Second, consolidate campuswide social services to provide students with tailored support. Third, establish bi-annual auction that allows students to bid for surplus equipment including computers and furniture.

Remy Hannan — Left Action

When the bushfire crisis hit in 2019, tens of thousands marched against the Morrison government and the fossil fuel industry, whose destruction of the climate had made it the hottest summer on record. But those protests didn’t come out of nowhere. Student protests across the year set the tone: there are no more natural disasters. The fossil fuel industry is to blame for these crises. The protests said: when our planet is under attack, we fight back. Vote [1] Left Action to see more environmental activism on campus!

Will Roumeliotis — Left Action

The catastrophic destruction of the environment, cities and people’s livelihoods by climate change could displace up to 1.2 billion people by 2050. Refugees are some of the most persecuted people on the Earth and Australia’s horrific treatment of refugees seeking safety here should be condemned. Hundreds of refugees languish in onshore and offshore detention centres. Left Action activists fought and won the freedom of the Park Hotel refugees -but we won’t stop till all the refugees are freed and given permanent citizenship. Vote [1] Left Action for a student union that fights for social justice!

ENVIRONMENT COMMITTEE

Sam Karabogias — Left Action

Left Action are committed to fighting for climate justice. A huge part of that fight is protecting humanity from the increasing occurrence and severity of climate disasters. We have seen one extreme weather event after another ravage the globe. From the immense heatwave in Europe and North America, to horrific floods in South Korea, there’is no denying the effects of global warming are here. We demand an end to fossil fuels now and the implementation of proper disaster relief systems. Vote [1] Left Action to ensure ordinary people are protected from the disastrous effects of a heating planet!

Hugo Somboonsin — Stand Up!

I’m Hugo Somboonsin, a second-year Science student and urban planning enthusiast. Growing up in the least educated state I have come to cherish all educational opportunities presented to me with the aim of utilising knowledge gained for the betterment of my country and the world at large. Students are the key to this change and the NUS is the most effective means of forming connections with and urging reform among my peers.

Nishant Sahoo

I am Nishant Sahoo, the voice of diversity and inclusion, as your National Union of Students delegate. As an international student from India, I bring a unique perspective to advocate for the needs and concerns of all students at UniMelb. I am committed to fostering a supportive environment, enhancing student welfare, and championing international student rights. Together, let’s build a stronger, united student community and create a university experience that empowers and represents every individual. Your vote for me is a vote for a more connected and empowered campus.

Ngaire Bogemann — Stand Up!

Hey, I’m Ngaire (she/her) and I’m running for NUS delegate because I think student unions are at their best and most powerful when they organise collectively and collaboratively - and I think the NUS has the power to facilitate this and make sure student unions can effectively fight for more. There are so many barriers higher education students are facing right now, but I believe that an effective, progressive NUS can transform student’s lives for the better. That’s what I’d push for as an NUS delegate, so vote [1] Stand Up! for NUS delegates that fight for you!

Lucy Rachman Vascotto — Stand Up!

Hello! My name is Lucy (she/her) and I’m running for National Union of Students delegate. The NUS is an essential body that ensures student unions across the country can organise together to achieve change for students everywhere, but more can be done to make the NUS the fighting, progressive body it should be. If elected, I will make sure staunch left-wing policies on the issues that impact students are on the agenda - because they need to be. Vote [1] Stand Up! for more in 2024!

Molly Britt — Stand Up!

Hi everyone! My names Molly and I’m running for NUS Delegate for UniMelb! I’m a second year Arts student. I’m incredibly passionate about advocating for students in any way that I can and would love to go to NUS National Conference to advocate for lower university fees and better efforts to increase opportunities for disadvantaged Uni students across the country.

Stand Up! for more in 2024!

Evelyn Thompson — Stand Up!

Hi! My name is Evie (she/her) and this will be my second time at the NUS National Conference. I am extremely passionate about student unionism, and alongside my comrades at Stand Up!, I would love to collaborate with my peers at conference to implement muchneeded changes into the university setting. I would be honoured to be elected as an NUS delegate to help implement said changes.

Micaela Rynne — Stand Up!

Hi I’m Micaela (She/Her), I’m studying a Master of Marketing Communications and I’m running for NUS delegate to make sure that progressive feminist policy is considered and passed on conference floor.

Vote [1] Stand Up! for NUS delegate.

Alessandra Ward — Stand Up!

Hey! I’m Alessandra (she/they) and I’m a first year student studying arts. I attended my first NUS Conference this year and am excited to attend National Conference at the end on the year. I want to promote the interests of all students on conference floor, especially the voice of women, trans and non-binary students. I am passionate about making sure the NUS takes an active feminist stance in 2024, so vote [1] Stand Up! for NUS delegates that will promote left wing values at NUS National Conference!

NATIONAL UNION OF STUDENTS DELEGATE CONT.

Ruby Craven — Stand Up!

The National Union of Students is key to the student union movement in Australia. At NUS National Conference, the key policy that the NUS will fight for in its next year is voted on, and I want to be an NUS delegate to promote the interests of all progressive leftwing Unimelb students on conference floor. Vote [1] Stand Up! for NUS delegates that are passionate about making higher education better for students everywhere.

Raphael Duffy — Left Action

Students are under attack all across the country. Fees have more than doubled for many degrees. Funding has been cut. 17,000 teaching jobs are gone. That means we need radical student activists not just in UMSU, but the National Union of Students too. Leftwing activists in NUS have fought against the Americanisation of higher education, the Liberals’ fee hikes, campus course cuts and supported staff strikes. Vote Left Action for a student union that will fight government attacks. Vote [1] Left Action for National Union of Students!

Lachlan Spencer — Southbank Students!

Jaan Schild — Left Action

Left Action activists have used NUS’s LGBT Office this year to fight back against the bigoted right. When the transphobe Posie Parker toured Australia, activists affiliated with Left Action organised a campaign through the National Union of Students to chase her out of the country. With the right on the rise across the world, we need more than ever to build a student movement that will draw a line in the sand and mobilise to oppose them. Vote [1] Left Action for National Union of Students!

Jack Doughty — Southbank Students! For

UMSU

It is difficult for me to imagine what “personal liberty” is enjoyed by an unemployed person, who goes about hungry, and cannot find employment.

Real liberty can exist only where exploitation has been abolished, where there is no oppression of some by others, where there is no unemployment and poverty, where a man is not haunted by the fear of being tomorrow deprived of work, of home and of bread. Only in such a society is real, and not paper, personal and every other liberty possible.

Bella Beiraghi — Left Action

From demonisation of refugees and migrants, to the rabid ‘No’ campaign against the proposed Voice to parliament, the racist right are on the rampage in Australia. As a dedicated anti-racist activist, I’ve organised for years against these vile politics. Recently, I spoke at a demonstration in Sunshine against the repulsive neo-Nazi organisation National Socialist Network, who openly demand ‘Australia for the white man’. I want to see NUS organise more campaigns in 2024 to push back against the increasingly confident racist right. Vote [1] Left Action for National Union of Students!

Penelope scacciante — Left Action

The Labor government has taken Liberal plans to spend $368bn on a new fleet on nuclear submarines as part of the AUKUS alliance. This reckless scheme brings us closer to war. This money could be used to fund free education, affordable housing and welfare for all those who need it. As a dedicated campaigner against war and militarism I want to see NUS challenge Labor’s outrageous plans in 2024. Vote [1] Left Action for National Union of Students!

Lucy Kelly — Left Action

The world is in total crisis. We’re already seeing the devastating impacts of climate change, a pandemic has killed millions already, and the injustices and atrocities of capitalism mount every day. When students fight back, we can challenge these injustices and change the world. If elected, I’m going to make sure that our student union does everything it can to build that fight back. Vote [1] Left Action for National Union of Students!

DISABILITIES OFFICER (2023)

Adam Whitehead and Alice Zhao — Community for UMSU

Provisionally elected unopposed.

G’day! We are the current Disabilities Officers, Adam and Alice, and are committed to making changes at the University to create a more accessible and inclusive environment. We want to ensure that disabled students are involved in co-design of policies that directly affect our community both within UMSU and in the University as a whole. Our community needs to be heard, not told what is best for us by non-disabled people. So far in our term, we have continued the work of bringing our community together to fight discrimination we see on campus as a united front. This includes us being heavily involved in pushing back against the inadequate Disability and Inclusion Action Plan (DIAP). We want to see the university create policies built on our needs and we want them to be held to account for the success or failure of these policies. Our environments are very rarely designed with a mind for

those who don’t fall in the middle of the bell curve. From things as simple as someone left-handed trying to use righty scissors,to the new precinct being riddled with inaccessibility to disabled students being forced out of their courses due to the discriminatory structure of the university. Enough is enough. We want our community to feel pride in who we are, on their own terms. In the rest of our term, we will continue to foster a welcoming environment for disabled students and continue to spread the awareness and education to the broader university population. Nothing about us -- without us. Vote [1] Community for all positions!

TICKET STATEMENTS Independent Media

For well over a decade, the UMSU Media Office has been in the autonomous and impartial hands of Independent Media. During these years, we have always acted to uphold our fundamental values of independence, accountability and transparency. Driven not by a political agenda but by an inclination towards representing student media, we believe in keeping students informed on student issues, facilitating an outlet for creative expression and holding UMSU and the University accountable. The candidates who are chosen in a democratic preselection decided by the Media Collective (including contributors to Farrago, Radio Fodder and Above Water) run only for the Media Office, ensuring our independence is maintained. Some members of the Media Collective are then chosen to run as candidates for Students’ Council to advocate for student media in UMSU decision-making processes.

Our editorial candidates for 2023 are Gunjan Ahluwalia, Joel Duggan, Kien-Ling Liem and Jessica Fanwong, who will manage the Design, News, Nonfiction and Creative sections of Farrago respectively. Running for council are five incredibly qualified and committed members of our Media Collective, Hayley Cheung, Desmond Ng, David Nawaratne, Iyaad Cassim and Amery Atinon, who will represent the interests of student media at council and safeguard the Media Department against partisan influence.

From teaching herself Adobe softwares through YouTube to now doing a Bachelor of Design – Gunjan’s love for art has come a long way. It is this passion that she would hope to bring to the Media Department! Her mission for media in 2024 is simple: reach every corner of the university to relate, collaborate and inspire. She wants to ensure Farrago becomes a more inclusive haven for creativity where student voices are heard and appreciated. As a Design Editor, she wants to be able to provide everyone a chance to explore and expand their interests through Farrago features and contributions, events and workshops.

In his three years at Farrago, Joel has been a subeditor, staff writer, reporter and Reviews Coordinator, he’s been to stupol conferences in both Geelong and Brisbane, he’s ran for council himself and, after all that, he’s published 26 pieces of his own writing through Farrago. Now, he is hoping to become your News Editor, so he can bring his vision of student-centred student media to the Media Department – it’s time to cover things students actually care about!

As Nonfiction Editor, Kien-Ling Liem plans to uphold Farrago’s values as a collective magazine: for students, by students. She plans to keep the Nonfiction department as diverse as possible by including new writers and writers from multiple faculties, as well as emphasising writing about a variety of topics. In addition to this, she would like to encourage writers to explore different styles of nonfiction, whether it pushes creative boundaries, plays with space between words, or is based in the spoken reality of an interview. Of course, this would entail facilitating greater collaboration between Farrago and Radio Fodder.

As Creative Editor, Jessica plans to ensure the Media Department is representative of all students’ voices and interests. She would like to see the Media Department become a more inclusive and diverse space where students can grow as writers and gain greater awareness of the university community as readers. This includes hosting more writing workshops and author talks to provide students with the opportunity to improve their writing skills, increasing collaborations with other UMSU autonomous departments, as well as optimising the usage of social media to reach a greater audience of students and lower the barrier of entry.

Our vision for the Media Department in 2024 is founded upon three pillars: Improve outreach via lecture-bashing campaign and revitalised social media strategy.

Each year, a commitment is made to diversify Farrago’s content – sometimes there is progress, sometimes not. The most important thing for achieving this progress is a clear strategy. In this case, we are promising to organise a massive campaign to promote Farrago in lectures across faculties and campuses to bring in a range of new students willing to contribute in new ways. It is only through a steadily increasing inflow of students that we are able to implement the transformative change we envision.

This election promise necessitates a new strategy for social media, focusing on the promotion of Radio Fodder and content from the archives. Currently, the physical archives lay in boxes of the Media Office unused. Writers deserve more than to have their work published on socials once only to be forgotten about – we will ensure the work of our contributors receives the promotion it deserves.

Take Radio Fodder and Reviews Department to the next level.

This year, the Farrago Reviews Department has been among the magazine’s most active departments, posting multiple reviews a week of film screenings, concerts, festivals, art exhibitions, theatre productions, comedy shows and books. When promoted on socials, these reviews are often among our most popular posts – students clearly enjoy our reviews content. Therefore, the next step is to provide the Reviews Department with a budget necessary to expand into bigger and better things: restaurant reviews, festival reviews, going interstate, and, we hope, a whole lot more.

However, Radio Fodder has struggled to reach students this year. This has revealed the need to engage in greater coordination of the department. We plan to put Radio Fodder back on the map by using it as an avenue to promote emerging figures in local music and art via interviews and developing a tighter social media strategy for advertising shows.

Revamp the Media Office.

As a Media Department, we plan to transform the Media Office from its current state as a chaotic storage space into a place where students can hang and really get involved. We want it to be welcoming, to be abuzz with activity, meetings and food to best stimulate the kind of writing and community that we picture. We commit to keeping the Media Office active with regular events and office hours, access to free food and drinks, and a friendly vibe.

Stand Up!

Progressive, passionate, supportive - Stand Up! is the friendly, neighbourhood ticket that UMSU needs to spearhead the changes that students need during a time where action is not only desired, but required. Here at Stand Up! we pride ourselves on our intersectional feminist, unionist and anti-racist values, which have contributed to our well-established, decade-long history of progressive changes to the student union. Such changes include WAMnesty, which relieved students of academic stresses during the COVID pandemic, and the Safety on Campus campaign.

After years of lockdowns and a move away from Union House, the student union movement here at UniMelb is in dire straits. Most new students aren’t even aware of what UMSU does, or that it even exists, and we are here to change that. Students’ interests are being attacked from both inside and outside of the university setting, and we need to ensure that experienced, passionate student unionists are elected so that their interests are being seen, heard, and accommodated for.

We have a team of hard-working and enthusiastic candidates for a variety of UMSU positions:

Micaela (she/her) and Akanksha (she/her) are running to be your Women’s Officers because they want to deliver the positive and intersectional changes that students need and deserve. Passionate about righting the wrongs of our current university culture, Micaela and Akanksha are determined to represent the women, trans, and non-binary individuals that continue to be neglected by the University.

Hoping to continue the fantastic work of our current Stand Up! Women’s OBs, Ngaire and Alessandra, Micaela and Akanksha are ready to bring in outcomes that benefit all students on campus, regardless of gender. They are also keen on campaigning for the university to do more to end period poverty, as seven period product vending machines are certainly not enough for a campus of more than 50 buildings (and that’s just at Parkville!).

Women, trans, and non-binary folk – especially BIPOC, queer and gender diverse individuals – deserve a safe and supportive environment, and our Stand Up! candidates are committed to fighting tooth and nail to ensure inclusivity, equality, respect, anticolonial and intersectional feminist values are properly executed at UniMelb.

We are also very excited to announce that we have Julian (he/him) and Lucy (she/her) running for the Education (Academic Affairs) Office for 2024! They are super keen to work hard to make the university a fairer, more accessible and inclusive environment for every student. They believe strongly in the role of a student union in providing services to make sure everyone is being treated with respect and has the support they need, as well as advocating for student rights inside and outside of the classroom. Lucy and Julian are ready to fight for immediate costof-living relief for students, by ending additional upfront subject costs, like paying for lab coats. This would be a step towards promoting equity of access to higher education. In addition, they are passionate about fighting to lower hurdle requirements for tutorial attendance, bringing it in line with other universities across the state, and reducing the risk of being unfairly failed in a subject.

Lucy and Julian, are committed to fighting for a more inclusive and fairer space for students by pressuring the University to universally adopt a ‘no contest’ extension policy making it easier for students to apply for and receive an extension and streamlining the special consideration process for students in difficult or vulnerable situations.

Our experienced candidate Carlos Lagos Martin (he/him) will be running for a second year in the Education (Public Affairs) Office alongside Evelyn Thompson (she/her), who shares the same passion and excitement at the prospect of working in the same office, advocating for changes both within and outside the university setting. It is no secret that the student experience is crippling under the weight of the current cost-of-living crisis - and we know that the government isn’t doing enough to change that. For these reasons, alongside countless other daily stresses that students encounter, we need two diligent and resourceful representatives to lift the voices of students in need, and fight for change to be implemented.

Keen to build upon Renee and Kimmy’s work in the Clubs and Societies Office are Azalea (she/her) and Hanny (she/her). Having been extensively involved in a variety of clubs at the University of Melbourne, this dynamic duo is excited about the prospect of fostering vibrant and supportive club communities through their positions as Office Bearers. With significant institutional knowledge stemming for their work as Club executives and Clubs and Sociteties Committee members, Azalea and Hanny have the experience and understanding of club dynamics and administration processes to make the Clubs and Societies Office work for you.

Eager to merge their passions with the responsibilities of Office Bearers, Azalea and Hanny are keen on creating an inclusive and welcoming environment for all club members. They also intend to introduce more practical, streamlined support systems for club executives by increasing responsiveness to queries and improving communication via bulletins. Not only will the processes of running a club be made easier under these two, but we are sure that club members will be ecstatic to hear that events such as the “Executives Mixer” and “Awards Nights” will continue to be hosted, giving back to volunteers and supporting new and existing clubs.

Our equally passionate and enthusiastic set of candidates for Students’ Council and Departmental Committees are dedicated to upholding transparency and accountability at UMSU - because a thriving student democracy needs it. Stand Up! has years of experience in dealing with University bureaucracy, and our committee and Council candidates are committed to using this institutional knowledge to advocate for a better university, a better union, and an overall better campus experience.

All students deserve a happy, safe, and fulfilling university experience. Only Stand Up! will deliver this. Vote [1] Stand Up! for more in 2024!

Southbank Students! For UMSU

We are an autonomous group of Southbank students, advocating on the behalf of all of the incredible artists on our campus! We want to continue to make sure Southbank Students are represented on the Parkville campus, and have our voices heard in the union.

We will:

-Continue the ongoing welfare programs that have been so valuable for Southbank students (the breadbin, weekly BBQs, and Breakfasts)

-Continue to work with departments on main campus to deliver for Southbank students

-Continue to help organise awesome events for Southbank students, like the Southbank Ball

-Speak up for Southbank Students in Students Council, and advocate for our interests

-Make sure satellite campuses aren’t just an after thought and are treated fairly If you’re a Southbank student or care about your friends down at the finearts and music campus, vote [1] Southbank Students! For UMSU.

Community For UMSU

Students need support. Students need representation. Students need community.

We are Community for UMSU, a grassroots movement of students from almost every faculty and background, graduate and undergraduate, domestic and international. We are committed to creating a university experience where no student is left behind.

That means rallying with students against a university administration that puts profits first. That means equitable and meaningful representation for all of us. That means putting what you want at the centre of all that we do.

We have made huge strides in making the student union prominent and accessible. A Community-led UMSU, for three years, delivered the Welfare Department Union Mart, university-wide diversity and inclusion modules, $4000 grants for international students, WAMnesty, and so much more. This year, our departments have advocated for food security among our most vulnerable students, led the fight for racial justice on campus, delivered accessible education, and continued to push for reform to the University’s Student Equity and Disability Support system.

No matter the circumstance, we remain committed to helping students get the most out of their university experience. Our 2023 candidates are ready to lead a more inclusive, more relevant, and more dynamic UMSU through 2023, just as our 2022 candidates brought stability into a union in crisis throughout covid.

But the challenges before us remain, and your voice is critical in tackling them. That’s why from September 4-8, we are standing once again to:

Support our community,

because UMSU is $9 million of student money (your money!). Whilst more students are accessing the many services UMSU offers, we want to make sure they are impactfully connected to those most in need.

Build our community,

because our candidates are drawn from the multitude of clubs, collectives, and cultural communities at the university. Last year, an overwhelming proportion of our 120 candidates were international students, which make up over 40% of our student body.

Fight for our community,

because our representatives have a proud track record of supporting a student body still recovering from the pandemic. And we believe only a grassroots-based, independent-minded voice can make it happen.

Supporting our Community

We want to make UMSU more accessible by fighting for :

1. Simplified UMSU governance:

- Translating UMSU and university documents, ensuring all students have access to materials in their preferred language.

- Reforming student elections, including election campaigning and regulations, and expanding UMSU’s affirmative action policies so that marginalised communities are effectively represented at the highest level.

2. Equitable academic policy:

- Reforming the special consideration process to make it less demanding on students facing adversity.

- Committing to rehauling SEDS

- Continue advocating for accessible classes and online options.

- Creating genuine student input into subject and faculty management, as well as additional student representation on the University’s policy-making bodies.

3. Stronger support services:

- Reforming the CAPS system, securing more culturally competent counsellors for students from different identities, backgrounds, and languages.

- Involving more students in the improvement of student services through active listening, data collection and co-design.

Building our Community

We want to continue rebuilding student life from the lows of 2022, as we complete the move to the New Student Precinct and build back better and stronger.

1. Engage our student communities:

- Working and engaging with communities and clubs from diverse and unique cultural and linguistic backgrounds, doing what matters for the heart of student life at university.

- Advocating cuts to Stop 1’s bureaucracy, including increased availability, fixing the class selection system, modernising the website and making it available in more languages.

2. An accessible campus for all:

- Pushing for the creation of quiet spaces on and around all on-campus events.

- Advocating for physically accessible teaching spaces in-person, and continuing the work to guarantee access to note-takers, as well as close-captioned lectures across all faculties.

- Expanding existing employability programs for students, expanding internship programmes, and ensuring that all faculties are able to support their students during the transition from university to working life.

Fighting for our Community

We want to show the strength of what marginalised groups otherwise neglected by the University can achieve if allowed to flourish in a space, in a community. Together, we will fight for:

1. Truly inclusive activism:

- Centring the voices of marginalised backgrounds in all of UMSU’s events, activities and workshops, and campaigning against racial injustice in all its forms on campus.

55

Community For UMSU CONT.

- Holding the university to account for its inaction against sexual harassment and assault on campus, fighting for a traumainformed response centre separate from the general university administration.

- Defending queer safety and belonging on campus, especially the well-being of transgender and gender-diverse students, by fighting transphobia on the ground, in lectures, and in coursework.

1. A vibrant Bla(c)k, Indigenous and People of Colour community:

- Connecting communities of colour, by directly liaising between UMSU departments and cultural clubs.

- Streamlining Clubs Regulations, funding and training systems to be more accessible to cultural and international-studentfocused clubs.

- Commit to fighting scams that take advantage of students of diverse backgrounds and reach out to communities underserved by university services.

That might be all we have space for, but our community has bigger plans and ambitions for 2023. To find out more, reach out to all of our amazing candidates this September 4-8!

Vote [1] Community in all positions, to create a student union that will fight with you!

For more information, check out our Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/CommunityForUMSU !

We will be doing what matters for the heart of student life at university, to build back student life on campus better and stronger through working and engaging with the university community, all to build towards a fairer go for everyone, especially for all those from diverse and unique cultural and linguistic backgrounds.

Working with the university community and management, we will ensure the delivery of actual, tangible change for all university students, including the modernisation of the university support services. We will strive for activism that works for students over frivolous campaigns that does nothing but further radical and unrealistic revolutionary agendas.

Left Action

Left Action is a coalition of activists and anticapitalists on campus. We fight for education, climate action and social justice every day of the year. We’re running because we want UMSU to stand in the best traditions of radical student unionism and fight for our rights, while taking a stand against every instance of injustice and inequality.

No more staff cuts and fee hikes - free education now!

Melbourne Uni holds billions of dollars in assets and investments and rakes in yearly profits of hundreds of millions by exploiting staff and students. Vice-Chancellor Duncan Maskell is the highest paid university boss in Australia, with an annual salary of over $1.5m. For staff, he has become a symbol of everything wrong with the university - the pro-corporate, business model of education. But this year, staff have decided to fight back. They are demanding an above inflation pay rise, a mass conversion of casuals into secure employment, manageable workloads and more.

We all lose out when the university is run for profit - staff lose out on pay and working conditions while the quality of our education plummets. Staff working conditions are our learning conditions. We need to fight back against the university bosses, and their friends in parliament who treat universities like private corporations. Left Action activists have been involved in leading the student campaign to support staff on strike this year and we’ve led movements against attacks on our education over the past few years.

Students are also being squeezed by the worsening cost of living crisis with soaring rents, expensive groceries and eye watering electricity bills. For the few able to secure student accommodation, any sense of relief from the housing crisis is offset by the reality of sky-high rents. Scape, Australia’s biggest student accommodation operator, charges $759 a week for a large studio apartment on Swanston Street. This is $300 more than equivalent rentals on commercial real estate sites and 57% higher than Melbourne’s median weekly rental rate.

We could easily fund free education, affordable housing and liveable welfare payments if Labor scrapped its plans to spend hundreds of billions on nuclear submarines and tax cuts for the billionaires! Left Action will support staff on strike, and demand the government fund education and welfare, not warfare.

We need urgent action on the climate crisis!

The latest IPCC report found that the world is likely to surpass 1.5 degrees of global warming by the early 2030s. The U.N. Secretary General warned that the era of global warming has ended and “we are now entering the era of global boiling.” July has been the Earth’s hottest month in recorded history. Intense and repeated heat waves have engulfed southern Europe, South-East Asia, northern Africa and the United States. They have shattered records and fuelled wildfires in Greece, Canada and Algeria.

Despite these predictions, the federal Labor government is set to increase Australia’s already colossal carbon footprint through a string of major fossil fuel export projects - 114 planned coal mines and gas extraction facilities, to be exact. While Unimelb claims to be “developing real world solutions for a safer climate future”, it champions partnerships with the world’s biggest fossil fuel corporations including Rio Tinto and Saudi Aramco. Our university has an estimated $70m tied up with climate criminals.

We need a massive, radical, activist movement to challenge this climate vandalism. Left Action activists have been involved in every important fight for the climate. We helped organise the blockade of a mining conference in 2019 and set up Uni Students for Climate Justice, which got 100,000 people out in the streets against the Morrison government during the bushfires. We have protested fossil fuel companies on our campusdisrupting job fairs where they try to recruit students to their work.

This year, with Emma and James as UMSU Environment Officers we have continued to be the leading force of climate activism both on and off campus; earlier this year we led a National day of Action for climate justice which got hundreds of students out in the streets in Melbourne, and thousands across the country.

Next year we will use the Environment Office to continue organising activism and protests. We want to force Unimelb to divest from fossil fuels, and to demand the federal Labor government shut down coal and gas now!

Fighting racism, sexism, and the the far right

Far right politics are spreading across the globe. The overturning of abortion rights in the US last year, the rolling back of rights for trans people and the LGBT community more broadly, has emboldened the right internationally. Far-right governments across Europe are leading the crusade against refugees and migrants from North Africa and the Middle East. Earlier this year far-right transphobic activist Posie Parker toured Australia in an attempt to spread her bigotry. At her event in Melbourne, thirty neo-Nazis from the National Socialist Network rallied to support her. These fascists sieg-heiled on Parliament steps and chanted “white power” while carrying a banner with the phrase “destroy paedo freaks.”

Left Action activists, along with the National Union of Students LGBTI office, launched a successful campaign of protests to shut down Posie Parker - and we won! Her attempt to spread anti-trans hate was stymied as hundreds and soon thousands of activists chased her across the country. We were also involved in organising the 15,000 strong pro-abortion rights demonstration in Melbourne last year after Roe v Wade was overturned in the US. We helped found and continue to lead the Campaign Against Racism and Fascism - which has successfully pushed back the Neo-Nazi National Socialist Network time after time. Our members have campaigned in support of Palestinian rights, to free the refugees locked up in onshore and offshore detention and rallied to protest Indigenous deaths in custody.

We still have so much to fight for. Having committed anti-racist, anti-sexist and anti-fascist activists elected to UMSU will make sure the campus is a hub of social justice campaigning.
