WELCOME

welcome I think one of the reasons the Maltings is a special place is because we exist in a found building that doesn’t prescribe what we should do or how our audiences should behave. We do not require people to sit in rows for two hours in the dark consuming high culture, nor are we a multiplex cinema with little human interaction and a barrage of popcorn and pick ‘n‘ mix sweets to navigate.

Our ambition for the Maltings is to continue to create a place in which people can play, imagine and connect, informally, through a series of events. We want the Maltings to be a public and social space for the town in which anyone can meet friends for a shared event, use the wifi, borrow a book, enjoy the café, connect with a local craftsperson, visit a festival, learn a new skill or just sit and be. Which is why it was a complete delight, on the last weekend of the summer holidays, to present our first evening of open air cinema in the courtyard and see an audience that included small children in their pyjamas, wide-eyed at the experience, alongside a group of women connected through a book group out for a treat and two elderly neighbours just ‘getting away from the TV for the evening’. All in the same space at the same time.

I hope we manage to do this more often.

The Royal Opera House Live: La bohème Sun 02 February 2pm · £15

SCREENING

Puccini’s opera of young love in 19th-century Paris is packed with beautiful music, including lyrical arias, celebratory choruses for Act II’s evocation of Christmas Eve in the Latin Quarter and a poignant final scene over which the composer himself wept. Richard Jones’s production perfectly captures the mixture of comedy, romance and tragedy.

Step-by-step instructions will be given on how to sculpt with wire; learning to trace, join and shape coloured copper wire into a beautiful bird. Start by creating the 2D frame outline from a drawing and develop it building layer upon layer of wire, to create your 3D bird. For ages 16+.

museum of farnham · exhibitions As the days grow longer and spring flowers begin to appear, we welcome you to the museum for a range of exhibitions and activities.

In January we are introducing our new Objects in Focus case, where artefacts from the collection will be placed on display with in-depth interpretation telling you more about the object and stories surrounding it. This project will be delivered alongside community groups and this year the museum’s volunteers will take the lead.

At any time during the museum’s opening hours, visit our permanent displays telling the history of Farnham, use our local studies library or come and relax in the garden.

Throughout the spring term children can join our Young Archaeologists’ Club one Saturday per month, with sessions based on the topic A History of Humans. During February half term and the Easter holidays, 3–7-year-olds are welcome for arts and crafts in the garden gallery.

The Easter holidays also mark the return of the museum’s pop-up café in the garden.

The café is open on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays during the school holidays between 10.30am–2.30pm.

Exhibition: Objects in Focus

We work with a number of companies and individual artists in the production of their work, sometimes as a collaboration or in co-production.

We run caravan – a programme of work designed to encourage England-based theatre makers to think and work internationally. caravan encompasses a biennial showcase in partnership with Brighton Festival, on-going and one-off projects with international partners and professional development opportunities for artists.

Touring We tour our own work and that of our associate companies, support a network of rural venues across Surrey and are continuing to build relationships with small scale theatres and art centres.
