WELCOME

welcome It would be impossible to write this introduction without reference to the fact that 50 years ago a group of local people rescued these buildings as a community asset for the town. I don’t expect, for one minute, that they could have imagined all the experiences, friendships, learning and sheer pleasure that would result from that simple decision.

For me it is a reminder, in a time when I feel increasingly uncertain about the world and our influence in it, that small actions can make a big difference. I have decided to focus my energies on the things I can do something about. Yes, we need to value and care for these buildings, but equally important is how we put them to use, the activities and opportunities we offer, the partnerships we form and the ways in which we help others to achieve their own ambitions.

We are certain that we can contribute to the shape and character of the town.

We know we haven’t arrived, that we need to constantly adapt, test new ideas and improve all that we do. But we think it is one small step to making our world better.

Learn techniques on how to use the Fude (brush) with Sumi (ink) on Washi (paper) to make the strokes and marks that are used to write Kana and Kanji (Japanese characters). You will build up these marks to create a finished piece of work. This traditional Japanese craft is 16 centuries old and is used as a meditative tool to achieve a calm mind. museum of farnham · exhibitions This spring we celebrate and commemorate in equal measure. We celebrate the 50th anniversary of Farnham Maltings and its contribution to the life of the town and beyond.

Our temporary exhibition commemorates the 60th anniversary of the death of Mike Hawthorn who died in a car accident in 1959. He was the first British driver to win the Formula One World Championship and spent much of his life living in Farnham.

As our minds start to look forward to longer, warmer days, our thoughts also turn to tea, coffee and cakes in the garden. This Easter we will be opening our café on Thursdays and Saturdays 12pm–3.30pm in the museum’s gorgeous 18th-century walled garden. Come and join us to relax, unwind and eat delicious treats!

Your Farnham Maltings: 50 Years in the Community

Mike Hawthorn: The Farnham Flyer
