Celebrating the History of Textiles in Farnham

As the current textiles courses move from The University for the Creative Arts, Farnham to the School of Fashion and Textiles at UCA Epsom, we’re taking this moment to celebrate the rich history of textiles in Farnham and the surrounding areas.

Originating from the 16th and 17th centuries when wool was woven and fulled using local watermills that are still present today, the design and production of woven cloth has remained an

integral part of craft in Farnham. The Crafts Study Centre has a wonderful textiles collection ranging from printed textiles, woven textiles, and embroidery. It holds the major collection of work by Phyllis Barron (1890–1964) and Dorothy Larcher (1884–1952), two of the leading hand-block printers of textiles working in Britain in the 1920s and 1930s.

The hand-woven textiles collection represents a broad

spectrum of makers in this medium, from Ethel Mairet, whose workshop in Sussex was seminal in the training of a whole generation of weavers from the 1930s and 1940s, to later work by Peter Collingwood and Amelia Uden.

Over the years there has been exceptional talent that has studied on the textile courses Alumni include: Rezia Wahid, Cara Tomi, Charlotte Karin, Jennifa Chowdhury, Louise

Cottey, Wendy Irving, Shakhina Mirjonova, Kas Williams, Kathryn Green, Sharon Kearley.

In 2022, we celebrated another UCA Alumni, textile artist Jane Browne winning the Surrey Artist of the year. Jane was taught by the late eminent tapestry weaver Archie Brennan.

Following the closure of the textiles department at UCA, local maker Helen Locke has saved a handful of looms and is developing an initiative to provide an open access space for artists and crafts people to use the looms to develop their own textiles practice and keep this heritage craft alive.

Did you take part in any of the “Make your mark” workshops during Craft Month last year? If so, your contribution is now on display in the shape of the wonderful installation on Riverside Walk opposite The Farnham Maltings.

“A Hand’s Turn” by Natalie Bradwell and Livia Spinolo is a sensory, tactile, and interactive sculptural installation inspired by photographs showing barley stored at the Maltings in conical piles and the repetition of the shape on buildings across Farnham. The kinetic sculpture requires the movement of hands which symbolises how hands have been used in craft for thousands of years.

The repetitions of our sculptural forms respond to the architectural repetitions of The Maltings’ façade facing the river, the conic shapes echo the round and pointed roofs

A Hand’s Turn

around the location, the path created by the cones is mirroring the path along the river. The colour of the chosen metal will dull down with time into more earthy tones and will conversate with the immediate surroundings.

The project which has involved Farnham Town Council, the University for the Creative Arts, Farnham Maltings and the Farnham Public Art Trust was conceived in 2020. A competitive public commission was undertaken, and the work was awarded to the winning artists in 2022. The requirements were for something that was ambitious and that created opportunities for people to connect with the environment around the work and potentially with other people.

The sculpture was funded by Section 106 Environmental Enhancement monies from the building of new student accommodation at the University for the Creative Arts’ Farnham Campus. The location of the public art installation was chosen because of the links between the University and the Farnham Maltings. The flexibility of the installation allows for the work to be displayed in other parts of the town too.

Visitors and residents are invited to experience “a sensory, tactile and interactive sculptural installation” that allows the viewer to “sense the space, experience the movement, encounter the craft”. “Touch me, spin me, enjoy me.”

Other public art locations in Farnham include the sculpture park in the Evelyn Borelli Garden adjacent to the University for the Creative Arts, Hawthorne Lodge, the Lion and Lamb Yard, Victoria Garden, the New Ashgate Gallery and the Library Gardens.

A further art installation is due to be unveiled soon in the new Brightwells Yard scheme (see page 09).

Crest Nicholson is pleased to announce the public art at Brightwells Yard has now been installed.

An art trail will brighten Farnham as part of the Brightwells Yard scheme thanks to funding from Crest Nicholson.

The developer and Waverley Borough Council negotiated a Section 106 funding agreement to bring additional benefits to the town and existing community as a result of the new development.

Artist Patrick Walls has created 2.3m tall artisan figures carved in sandstone representing different craftspeople at work in a celebration of the historic craftsmanship in Farnham. The sculptures are arranged in three informal groups as if in conversation, looking out across the open space towards the other sculptures.

Artist Kerry Lemon has designed a series of unique hand drawn illustrations linking the past, present and future of craft in Farnham which have been transposed onto the surface of 13 paving stones, forming a public

Brightwells Yard Celebrates

Farnham’s Historic Craftmanship

art trail which people can create their own drawings from. The interactive trail will start from the pedestrian link in East Street, towards the river, and will weave past the craft figures. Kerry Lemon, artist of the unique pavers, said, “I was commissioned to create an interactive trail celebrating the history of Craft and highlighting Farnham’s important national role as ‘Craft Town’. I had a wonderful time researching and selecting a wide range of crafts and drawing each of the diverse and beautiful tools. They are designed to enable people to take rubbings and simple prints of my drawings using paper and crayons and I hope they may inspire and delight local residents for many years to come.”

Creator of the stone life sized figures, Patrick Walls, said, “What drew me to this project was the craft history of Farnham and the parallels between this history and my own practice. As a sculptor working in stone, I am very much aware of the rich history of craft that informs my practice. Each sculpture has taken up to two months to

carve using a range of traditional carving techniques. I like that this connects me to the craftspeople of Farnham, each of whom use their hands with traditional tools and methods that have evolved over generations.”

@peterquarmbywindsorchairs

@peterquarmbywindsorchairs

peterquarmby.com

What are you working on at the moment and where do you find ideas for your work?

Currently I’m working on a rocking chair, it’s a simplified version of a New England style. In making chairs, you’re always constrained by the need to make them practical and comfortable, but you can still use your imagination and not follow existing styles too closely.

What motivates you to make work, who do you believe has influenced your career and inspired you to start?

I first got the idea of making Windsor chairs on seeing the work of Barry Murphy. I was intrigued by how it was possible to make such a thing with almost no straight lines and also rather captivated by the beauty of the Windsor chairs. They’re literally a personal thing, needing to suit the body of the sitter.

If you could name one, what is your favourite piece of work you have created, and why?

That’s difficult to say, I tend not to get attached to any piece and just

do the best i can with each chair. I am fond of using milk paint on the chairs, which I think shows up the shape of the chairs very well.

What is your proudest achievement / or award you have received?

I’ve never won any awards and don’t expect to do so but each time the customer is obviously pleased with their chair that’s a very pleasing reward to me after the hard work of creating it.

What is the most indispensable item or tool in your studio?

Making Windsors is quite specialised in terms of the tools needed, inevitably you will acquire various tools which are more or less specific to that activity, eg, a travisher, a rotary trapping plane, bands for steam bending and so on. Also drinking tea is quite indispensable.

Where is your favourite place to see art / craft?

I rather like the Watts Gallery at Compton. The place has a real presence and I go back every now and then to see what’s new there.

What advice would you give to someone just starting out? Keep going for as long as you can. (And once you’ve done that, of course, you’re no longer just starting.)

Where can we try a workshop, in your craft, locally?

I recommend you contact James Mursell at the Windsor Workshop. James is based near Pulborough. As well as running. courses he’s also written a book on Windsor chair making, and offers specialised tools for sale. thewindsorworkshop.co.uk

Where can we see and buy your work?

You can see the work online peterquarmby.com and just come and chat to me at my workshop. Please visit: The Old Dairy, Pierrepont Farm, The Reeds Road, Frensham, GU10 3BS

Being part of a community of makers in Farnham is… …something that’s very pleasing to see and that I’m sure will only grow in its influence.

“keep going for as long as you can”

What are you working on at the moment and where do you find ideas for your work?

I am currently making pieces for the New Ashgate Gallery’s Winter Exhibition including a few of my larger animals and a selection of Christmas themed smaller pieces. I am also working on some decorative orbs of various sizes. They are textured, burnished and finished with several layers of beeswax which makes them very tactile. They also contain smaller balls within to add a musical element and are decorated with a combination of either coloured underglazes, stamped text (in collaboration with a local poet, Nigel Johnston), sgraffito and mishima decoration and smoke fired.

What motivates you to make work, who do you believe has influenced your career and inspired you to start?

I don’t remember a time when I didn’t enjoy being creative. There is a photo of me at 10 months old, sitting in a flowerbed making mud sculptures. I think I was always destined to work with clay. I can’t really think of

Liane Matthews Ceramicist

lianematthews.com @

any one artist who has influenced my career but favourite artists include Grayson Perry, Tach Pollard and Alberto Bustos, as well as many of the masters including Henry Moore and Marc Chagall.

If you could name one, what is your favourite piece of work you have created, and why?

My favourite piece of work is actually a mosaic I made with my son when he was about 6 years old. He drew a picture of a snail which I then copied onto wood. It was a really fun project to work on together and he was so thrilled with the result.

What is your proudest achievement/ or award you have received?

Getting my degree in ceramics was probably my proudest achievement.

What is the most indispensable item or tool in your studio?

My hands – haha! Seriously though, tools can be fashioned from pretty much anything you have around. Pottery is an ancient craft with a tradition of improvisation.

Where is your favourite place to see art / craft?

I love visiting the the galleries and museums in London, my absolute all time favourites being the V&A, the British Museum and the National Gallery.

What advice would you give to someone just starting out?

I think my best advice is to have fun, don’t be afraid to make mistakes and see where a project goes.

Where can we try a workshop, in your craft, locally?

I am currently building a new, larger studio and aim to offer courses in the new year.

Where can we see and buy your work?

My work is available to buy at The New Ashgate Gallery in Farnham and Bell Fine Art Gallery in Winchester.

Being part of a community of makers in Farnham is… Pretty cool. Talking about our latest projects over a coffee can bring unexpected ideas.

“I don’t remember a time when I didn’t enjoy drawing, painting and being creative”

What are you working on at the moment and where do you find ideas for your work?

Tapestries portraying the Esso aviation fuel pipeline currently being laid between Southampton and Heathrow. This has cut through the local landscape creating interesting shapes. The job of the artist is to see beauty in everything including sometimes unusual or controversial subjects.

What motivates you to make work, who do you believe has influenced your career and inspired you to start?

Weaving combines my passion for landscape and my affinity with texture. I explore the character and delicacy of individual species of flower in my painting. My inspiration for tapestry weaving came from my teacher, the late eminent tapestry weaver Archie Brennan.

If you could name one, what is your favourite piece of work you have created, and why? Any work I have done showing newly harvested fields. The shapes created by the cut

rows combined with the colour of the ripe crop is particularly atmospheric.

What is your proudest achievement/ or award you have received?

Winning Surrey Artist of the Year 2022.

What is the most indispensable item or tool in your studio?

My sketchbook.

Where is your favourite place to see art / craft?

The Tate Galleries and the Royal Academy in London. Locally for craft the Craft Study Centre at UCA is a fabulous venue plus the New Ashgate and Watts Gallery.

What advice would you give to someone just starting out?

Visit local artists in your chosen field but always be true to yourself and follow what inspires you individually.

Where can we try a workshop, in your craft, locally?

I hope to be running tapestry workshops in my studio from 2023.

Where can we see and buy your work?

I have an exhibition at The New Ashgate Gallery 22nd September - 4th November 2023. My greetings cards and a small collection of tapestries and paintings are at the Farnham Pottery. Appointments can also be made in my studio.

Being part of a community of makers in Farnham is… A fantastic opportunity to take advantage of the support and encouragement that comes from knowing so many talented artists who practice in the area and who show such a varied spectrum of arts and crafts. We are all truly lucky to be part of a town which is internationally recognised and respected as a world craft town.
