January Programs 2026
FROM MYTH TO MAN: MARTIN LUTHER KING, AN INTERPRETATION Farmville Public Library will host a one-man play written and directed Ira Knight. Mr. Knight worked as an analyst for Student Affairs at Duke University before receiving the inspiration to write his one-man show, From Myth to Man: Martin Luther King, An Interpretation. In 2011, Mr. Knight was listening to Dr. King’s “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” speech which King delivered the day before his assassination on April 3, 1968. In that speech Dr. King calls for unity and nonviolent protests and says he wants to live a long life but does not fear any man. Knight previously stated, “His (Dr. King’s) speech struck me in a way like nothing else I’d ever heard. This is a husband and father who knows his death is looming. How does that feel? It’s absolutely thought-provoking.” With these thoughts in mind, Knight wrote From Myth to Man. The play depicts Dr. King (performed by actor John Ivey), contemplating his family and journey as a civil rights leader minutes before he was killed at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tenn., on April 4, 1968. Knight and Ivey have been performing this play in universities and art centers since it premiered in November of 2016 at the Carrboro Arts Center. At the end of each performance, Ivey and Knight have a 30-minute question and answer session with the audience. Knight says his goal is to help people understand that Dr. King was an ordinary man with very human feelings, hopes, and dreams as well as a civil rights champion. This performance will be held in the Library’s Auditorium on Tuesday, January 13 at 6:30pm. The performance is free and open to the public and is appropriate for all ages.
