New measures to combat volatility Future Farmers for East Sussex needed, as NFU survey reveals mixed harvest

The Ecological Land Cooperative opens smallholder applications for their East Sussex site continuing the work of generating ecological farming opportunities and rural enterprise.

The NFU is calling on Government to help build resilience in the farming industry to combat volatility, as the NFU’s annual harvest survey showed mixed results across the arable sector. ollowing a challenging year of extreme weather conditions and unpredictable prices, the varied results of this year’s harvest demonstrates the need for measures to be put in place to better manage volatility.

While the oilseed rape harvest fell in line with the five year average, spring barley saw a reduction in yield of approximately 10%, marking its lowest yield since 2012. Similarly, wheat yields reached 7.7 tonnes per hectare, falling below the five year average of 8.2 tonnes per hectare and hitting its lowest yield since 2013.

NFU combinable crops board chairman Tom Bradshaw said: “The extreme weather events of this year have caused crop yields to become increasingly unpredictable. Despite our favourable climate and soil conditions, farmers have

experienced an incredible amount of variation in this year’s harvest.

“With Brexit, the volatility of world commodity markets and the weather adding further uncertainty, farmers will be turning to the government for ways to build financial resilience into their businesses as farm payments are phased out over the next few years.

“It is essential that a new domestic agriculture policy is supportive of resilience in the face of short-term localised shocks while driving long-term competitiveness.”

The British arable sector is an important contributor to the nation’s economy and food supply. Every year it provides five million tonnes of flour, barley and malt to make 985 million pints of beer, grain for 11 million tonnes of farmed animal feed, and underpins the production of the equivalent of 11 million loaves of bread every day.

he Ecological Land Cooperative (ELC) has been granted temporary planning permission by Wealdon District Council to create three affordable smallholdings for new entrant farmers in Arlington, East Sussex and have announced the application process.

Industrial maize farming can cause soil erosion, compaction and surface water run-off increasing the risk of flooding. With the creation of three new smallholdings of mixed farms, the site at Arlington will be designed to become more biologically diverse and ecologically resilient.

The mission of the ELC is to provide affordable opportunities for ecological land-based businesses in England and Wales.

The ELC supports rural

regeneration by developing affordable residential sites for farming, forestry and other landbased enterprises which are ecologically beneficial and financially viable.

The ELC is primarily funded through community share issues — people powered investment — with the remaining funds from grant funding and loan financing.

The ELC business model retains the freehold on each smallholding in order to protect it for agricultural and ecological use, and as affordable in perpetuity.

The application process aims to identify passionate and committed small-scale farmers with great ideas for bringing local food, employment and agricultural diversity to the area.

The price of the holdings is fixed and the ELC is not looking for the highest bidder. Instead, they are looking for applicants who can demonstrate that they will be able to establish and manage an ecological farm business appropriate to the site, its natural resources and location.

Iconic trailer firm launches new horseboxes at 60th anniversary Europe’s top trailer maker has launched two new horseboxes as part of a triple celebration. hey were unveiled

by Ifor Williams Trailers at the official opening of their new £5 million factory in Sandycroft, in Flintshire, where 60 jobs have been created, as the iconic firm also celebrated its 60th anniversary in style.

The sleek lines of the flagship HBX trailer have taken their inspiration from automotive industry with a nod to the sophisticated ruggedness of the Range Rover and its “floating roof”.

The other innovation is that the body of the HBX is constructed from aluminium, making it lightweight and easy to tow.

The second new trailer is the HBE which has been designed for the more cost conscious consumer with a distinctive European look and feel.

The two horseboxes are being added to the overall range which also includes the market-leading HB trailers and the Eventa which also has living accommodation.

All of them have all undergone a tough testing regime which included being put through their paces at the Warwickshire test track used by all the main automotive companies.

In addition, they’ve also been subjected to extreme weather conditions in a climate chamber where the trailers were subject to freezing arctic conditions

Orders are being taken now for the new horseboxes which will be widely available in the New Year.

The guest of honour at the celebration was Ken Skates AM, the Welsh Government’s Cabinet Secretary for the Economy and Transport.

He was joined by a host of other VIPs and around 300 distributors from the firm’s worldwide sales network, with some travelling from as far afield as Australia and New Zealand.

As well as the new factory in Sandycroft, the company has other manufacturing sites in Cynwyd, Corwen and on Deeside Industrial Estate and employs more than 500 people.

Mr Skates said: “Ifor Williams Trailers is a real success story.

Sixty years after it was first established, the company continues to go from strength to strength and is an iconic brand across the world. It is also a regionally important business, employing hundreds of local people and providing a boost to our economy.

“It’s great news the company is developing new products and expanding its footprint in North Wales, and I’m delighted to officially open the new £5 million facility in Sandycroft.

“I look forward to seeing Ifor Williams Trailers continue to thrive over the coming years.”

Why don’t we eat turkey eggs?

Ecological economist and egg expert discusses egg sustainability in Canada. perennial favourite for countless Canadians during Thanksgiving is the iconic turkey dinner. And while turkeys are well known for their meat, it is virtually unheard of to eat their eggs.

Why is that?

Nathan Pelletier is an ecological economist at UBC’s Okanagan campus and the first-ever Egg Farmers of Canada Industrial Research Chair in Sustainability, awarded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada. He sat down with UBC Okanagan Media Relations to discuss the reason turkey eggs aren’t more common and the sustainability of eggs more generally.

Why don’t we eat turkey eggs?

That’s a really interesting question and one that I hadn’t really thought of before. The reason may be primarily about profitability.

Turkey’s take up more space, and don’t lay eggs as often. They also have to be raised for quite a bit longer before they begin to lay. This means that housing and feedrelated expenses would be considerably higher for turkey eggs compared to eggs from chickens.

Since providing feed is also responsible for the largest share of the resource use and emissions associated with egg production, turkey eggs would have commensurately higher impacts, which wouldn’t be great from a sustainability perspective.

Is there any reason why we can’t eat turkey eggs?

No. They are completely edible.

They have a similar creamy consistency to duck eggs and a speckled complexion like quail eggs. I actually think they would make for a very interesting and maybe even beautiful accompaniment to a turkey dinner. I suppose the most difficult part would be finding somewhere to buy them.

Why then are chicken eggs so much more common?

Again, it likely comes back to the cost of production. Farmers have been improving management strategies for producing chicken eggs in dedicated commercial facilities for almost one hundred years, and there have been genetics programs in place dedicated to optimizing layer hen genetics for productivity since shortly after WWII. Canadians now consume about 70 million chicken eggs annually.

What is the ecological impact of producing and consuming all those eggs?

Chickens actually convert feed to food very efficiently. It takes about 2 kg of feed to produce 1 kg of eggs, and the average laying hen now produces 300 eggs per year. For these reasons, chickens are an affordable and low-impact source of high-quality animal protein.

Interestingly, despite Canadian industry producing roughly 50 per cent more eggs now than it did 50 years ago, my research has shown that, due to improvements in efficiency over time, the resource and environmental footprint of the industry as a whole has actually decreased substantially since the early 1960s.

With eggs being such an important food staple for so many Canadians, how is your work helping make egg farming more sustainable?

While the industry has come a long way, the question and challenge that now presents itself is how to ensure comparable success looking forward. My research focuses on identifying and evaluating the effectiveness of different management strategies and sustainable intensification technologies that can be applied in the egg industry.

Why is sustainability an important issue for Canadian eggs?

Sustainability is an important issue for food systems as a whole.

The Canadian egg industry adds an estimated $1.37 billion to the economy annually and plays an important role in the diets of most Canadians. As with everything we consume—food or otherwise— searching for more sustainable ways to meet our basic needs and support our lifestyle aspirations is essential to ensuring that we can maintain the conditions necessary to our well-being over time.

Brexit Bill Basics

by Jonathan Thompson, Senior Associate at leading Lincoln's Inn law firm Hunters Solicitors. he Agriculture Bill was published on 12th September and will receive its second reading in the House of Commons on 10th October. So begins its passage through the Houses of Parliament. This will take some months and expect it to become law near the end of the current Parliamentary session.

But what does the Agriculture Bill actually do? How will it affect your farming business from day to day? If you are one of the 44,000 respondents to the Brexit Health and Harmony DEFRA Consultation, you will wonder if Michael Gove and his team took note of your points. I know that I am!

I am intrigued to know if there is anything that will help farmers and rural businesses be more creative and flexible with land ownership, occupation and use. That's the main legal technical point that I made in my consultation response.

The Bill itself makes interesting reading. Yes, a lawyer would state that, but beyond its sensible legal structure and use of the English language, the bill is well set out and readable.

It gives a flavour of the topics that Michael Gove thinks are key to agricultural and rural businesses. If you want a good summary of the main points in Michael Gove's mind for the future of agriculture, then read the Bill. It's available at https://services.parliament.uk/Bills/201719/agriculture/documents.html It is an "enabling bill". It doesn't set out to give the absolute detail for the future; right now it can't! You won't find it has glorious technicolour details of how the new Environmental Land Management Scheme (ELMS) will be run. Nor will you get the detail of the "new" BPS ("British Payment Scheme"?).

The Bill's purpose is to start a stream of mechanism and legal processes in secondary legislation.

These are statutory instruments. The Secretary of State for Agriculture will be empowered by the Agriculture Act to make statutory instruments. The UK still makes its own laws, although some are at the behest of EU directives.

The Agriculture Bill enables us (I mean each and every one of us) to help pick and choose what we want. We can try to influence DEFRA, but ultimately they will "pick and choose".

So what are the individual parts of the Bill?

There are eight core parts.

Part 1 provides for financial assistance, first and foremost. The phrasing of the section does give the impression that the emphasis is on the environment first, but that's no surprise from Michael Gove.

This section provides for assistance for management of land and water; public access; cultural / natural heritage; managing or adapting to climate change; dealing with environmental hazards; and protecting / improving the health of both livestock and plants.

There is also a wide ranging provision for starting or improving the productivity of agricultural, horticultural or forestry activities.

If you think that has a wide range, you'd be right. That can only be good and allow scope for a wide range of agricultural activities and income streams. It allows for improving products from those activities and efficient use of resources.

This part also allows for grants, loans, guarantees or other forms of assistance during this transition period. It also provides that the amount and details of funding given, will be made available to the public. This part also provides for an inspection system.

Part 2 covers financial support post Brexit. It triggers a seven year transition period from 2021 (which can be altered within those seven years). It allows DEFRA to phase out the BPS direct payments, making delinked payments. It also allows for a lump sum payment: this permits a lump sum for those seeking an exit from agriculture, allowing succession.

The Act then proceeds to start structuring the new system, allowing the RPA to modify the BPS and other EU grants and funds. This is a key section to my mind. It allows farmers & rural organisations time to think about what they want; then to lobby the Government on how this system should work and what schemes should be available. The Bill enables farmers & organisations that support farming

and rural business.

For example, if ELMS are to be for 10 years, does this mean that the TFA's campaign for 10 year FBTs has succeeded? Tenants may need 10 year terms to get the full advantage of an ELM and have an environmental scheme that achieves a result, on the ground and for public money.

Part 3 of the Bill provides for information to be supplied by all elements of the agri food supply chain. This allows DEFRA (and other Government departments) to deal with information advantageous to the agriculture supply chain, to help benchmarking and commercial effectiveness.

Part 4 provides for the Government to assist the agriculture sector in declaring when there are exceptional / extra market disturbances and make an intervention. This will take the form of offering financial assistance.

Part 5 concerns marketing standards. This is about a balance of protecting farmers and consumers by ensuring good quality produce and welfare standards. This is key to UK agriculture for its export market, as well as internal markets.

Part 6 leads on from the ethos of parts 3 & 5, ensuring that producer organisations become recognised and have an official function and voice in UK agriculture. It also provides for fair dealing by the purchasers of agriculture products – supermarkets.

Part 7 provides the regulations for support provided to agriculture, to comply with World Trade Organisation Rules. This will be a developing area, depending on whether we take a "hard" or "soft" Brexit.

In this Brexit phase of our political and economic history, agriculture has a huge opportunity. This is a piece of enabling legislation, not only for the Government but also for us. It is a time to lobby how the systems will work and what organisations can have an impact and work together. Used well, this Bill is a basic structure to enable us all to work towards a vibrant UK agriculture industry.

Performance is key in post-Brexit world

any of us in the industry have been scouring the Agricultural Bill for the shape of things to come in the post-Brexit world. What is clear is that direct payments will be diminishing, before disappearing completely (at least in England). For me it means that performance on farm and our ability to get returns from the market become even more critical in our success.

It’s something that we’ve been looking at in detail over recent months at AHDB, and we’ve now identified eight key characteristics of farms in the top-performing 25 per cent.

In our latest Horizon report we outline the steps for success in each of these factors, such as minimising overhead costs and making sure you have a plan and long-term goals for your business. The findings may be familiar – we have all heard similar messages, whether from farm advisers, bank managers or fellow farmers. More importantly, these eight characteristics are within our control on farm, unlike market prices and trade agreements.

When we looked at what the financial difference in performance is between farms with similar characteristics, taking into account overheads, variable costs and agricultural output, we’ve seen top performers making three or more times more than those in the bottom quartile. This would equate to an average difference of around £100,000 a year for cereals and oilseeds, dairy, pork, horticulture and potato sectors and around £50,000 a year for beef and lamb.

Making performance improvements doesn’t have to be about heavy capital investment. More often it’s about doing a range of things well and reaping the benefit from many interdependent ‘tweaks’.

And for some, this report could simply be a reminder of best practice already being undertaken on thousands of farms across the country. For others it gives a base from which to start addressing factors that would place them in a stronger, more independent, position. With case studies and evidence, it’s a reference point for farmers wanting to take a fresh look at their businesses to ensure it is ‘fit for the future’.

Making late season silage By: Philip Cosgrave, Grassland Agronomist at Yara here are many farmers still intending to make grass silage this year. But, there are a few things that we need to look out for, if we want to make well preserved, palatable silage.

Silage fermentation may be adversely affected if the ensiled grass has received large amounts of nitrogen as either fertiliser or slurry or if the grass has been unable to utilise all the nitrogen that was applied.

A general rule of thumb for calculating nitrogen fertiliser application rates is to allow 2 units of N per acre per day of growth (2.5kgN/ha/day), including any applied as FYM or slurry. Grass takes up N faster than it can use it for growth so nitrate may accumulate if this is exceeded or if conditions are such that growth is restricted, eg low light intensity, cool temperature. It is also a problem if there is a dry spell after application, when nitrate cannot be taken up by the roots, followed by a period of wet weather that results in luxury uptake. The plant cannot convert it to protein quickly enough so it accumulates in the plant.

High nitrates in grass influence fermentation High nitrates in the grass ensiled can influence fermentation in several ways: It causes a reduction in crop sugars as they are used to provide energy for the increased rate of plant growth and for the

manufacture of plant proteins.

The increased growth rate leads to a lower crop DM. In the silo most nitrate is converted to ammonia. Ammonia production causes an increase in pH slowing down acidification.

Nitrate itself, as well as many of its breakdown products, cause an increase in the buffering capacity of the crop which also counteracts the rapid acidification necessary for a good fermentation.

When undesirable bacteria, eg enterobacteria from slurry and clostridia from soil, grow in the presence of excess nitrate they produce more acetic acid. This can change a good lactate fermentation to a less desirable acetate fermentation and also increases the buffering capacity It is the relationship between sugar content and free nitrate which is important However, whilst the quality of silage is dependent on the levels of both grass sugars and free nitrate, there is not really a defined relationship between the two and care is needed interpreting analyses. There is not a defined relationship between grass sugars and nitrate. In fact, any more than really high nitrate concentrations can be synonymous with grass that will be difficult to preserve, there is German data showing that negligible nitrate concentrations can also be problematic for preservation (low/moderate concentrations of nitrate can be inhibitory to Clostridia) In most cases once grass sugars are >3% of the juice (30

g/L) then preservation should be OK assuming anaerobic conditions are quickly achieved and thereafter maintained and that there is no contamination with soil, manure/faeces, etc. In some cases if buffering capacity is very high (e.g. autumn grass) this 3% threshold may need to be increased to 3.5 or even 4%.

Similarly, if buffering capacity is very low (e.g. very stemmy grass) then 2.5 or even 2.0% sugar may be OK. Buffering capacity measures the resistance to a drop in pH. Crops with high buffering capacity may have a poor initial fermentation. In the absence of knowing the buffering capacity it is usually OK to use the 3% threshold. As mentioned, main times for concern for this 3% value is if there is grass that has a very high buffering capacity due to high white clover, very high or late application of N fertiliser, or lush leafy grass. If sending a grass sample for sugar or nitrate analysis, it is extremely important to cool the sample quickly. If not the grass sample will remain respiring at ambient temperatures using up sugars.

Top tips for making late season silage The silage expert Dr Dave Davies, of Silage Solutions has this advice.

Adjust cutting height depending on ground conditions Dead material at the bottom of the sward, maybe as a consequence of the drought, can lead to higher risk of poor

fermentation or aerobic spoilage (heating) at feed-out. Be careful when raking or picking up new leys to avoid soil contamination.

A rapid wilt, ideally to 30% DM But do not wilt longer than 36 hours. Preferably 24hours. The longer the wilt the more sugar is respired and lost in the field, leading to an increased risk of secondary clostridial fermentation.

Consider using a chemical additive If conditions are against you (crop, soil or weather), then they’ll inhibit microbial activity and you’ll more likely achieve a good preservation process.

Because of the drought it’s likely there is more soil nitrogen available than in a typical year, which could lead to higher levels of residual nitrate in the crop.

However, nitrates are of secondary importance to sugar levels. Grass will ensile correctly with up to 800ppm nitrate provided sugars are adequate (>3%).

Instances of high nitrate levels in the crop, coupled with low sugars can result in poor fermentation and on rare occasions the production of nitrogen dioxide, a reddish-brown heavy gas, in the first few days of storage. This can pose a serious health risk to people and livestock, and is known as ‘silo gas’ poisoning.

Given the above issues it’s more important than ever to follow good silage making practices this autumn.

Agricultural landlords to take ‘constructive approach’ to tenant farming housing improvements Scottish Land & Estates has said that agricultural landlords plan to work constructively with Scottish Government and others to improve housing stock on tenanted farms. abinet Secretary Fergus Ewing and Housing Minister Kevin Stewart held a summit on the issue with industry stakeholder bodies this week following the publication of a survey on the condition of agricultural tenancy housing.

Sarah Jane Laing, executive director of Scottish Land & Estates, said: "What was clear at the summit was that there is agreement that we need to work together to find a way to improve some of the housing on tenanted farms.

"The majority of tenants and landlords stated in the survey that the condition of housing was either excellent, very good or

acceptable. However, the fact that 14% of tenants described their houses as being in poor or very poor condition shows there is an issue that has to be addressed."

At the moment farmhouses are not covered by housing legislation but the Scottish Government plans to take steps to ensure they meet the basic standard for living accommodation by 2022 and the higher standard demanded in the private rented sector five years later.

"Everyone should have a safe, good quality home and that is a shared objective that needs to be achieved without damage to farm businesses. We look forward to working with government and industry to achieve a satisfactory outcome," said Ms Laing. "Given

the complexity of agricultural tenancy law surrounding farmhouses and repairing obligations, dealing with the issue

may not be straightforward but hopefully we can agree a way forward.�

Four air outlet options to achieve the stack effect in livestock buildings There is no “one-size-fits-all” approach to ventilating livestock buildings s cattle give off body heat, it rises to the roof and escapes through purpose designed outlets, drawing in fresh air at low level. This process, commonly referred to as the stack effect, is essential for naturally ventilated livestock buildings.

“For natural ventilation to occur without the environment becoming too draughty or too stagnant, buildings must be designed for the stack effect to proficiently manage the air inlet and air outlet cycle,” explains Stuart. “As livestock exhale warm, humid air, they’re also releasing any bacteria and viruses they are carrying. Buildings designed for the stack effect create a healthier environment by removing harmful elements through air outlets.”

A

1 Unprotected open ridge sections

Air passing over the roof is deflected upwards by the open ridge flashings creating a vacuum to enhance the draw of air from the building.

Unprotected open ridge sections are typically used in buildings with a central feed passage.

According to the “Livestock building design and material guide for natural ventilation” by Marley Eternit, there is no “one-size-fitsall” standard for air outlets.

Optimum conditions can be created through a number of products and designs. Below, Stuart outlines four air outlet options.

2 Protected open ridge sections

A protected open ridge has a covering to minimise rain ingress and can be built with a traditional fibre cement soffit strip or polycarbonate soffit strip. When engineered with polycarbonate soffit strips, more natural light is allowed into the building while also avoiding hot spots caused by low level rooflights.

“The air gap width in open ridge sections is determined by the building’s livestock capacity but must not exceeded 300mm in width due to HSG 33 requirements,” explains Stuart. “However, Marley Eternit can assist with design advice to obtain the optimum air space while adhering to health and safety guidelines.”

3 Spaced roofs

According to Marley Eternit’s ventilation guide, when roof sheets are installed with a gap between each sheet, buildings can easily achieve recommended air outlet space.

“Spaced roofs are another great option for buildings with high stocking density of adult cattle, where there is a requirement for additional air outlets,” adds Stuart.

4 Breathing roofs

When additional air outlet space is needed for high stocking densities, installing semi-compressed fibre cement profiled sheets as breathing roofs, in conjunction with open ridge sections, is an effective way to achieve sufficient ventilation outlets.

The best roofing material for livestock buildings is semicompressed fibre cement profiled sheeting due to its ability to absorb up to 25 percent of its dry weight in moisture. This greatly reduces condensation dripping from the underside of the roof, leading to a dryer environment inside a building.

“There are a lot of factors that must be managed to create a healthy and productive environment for livestock production. Things like roofing materials, windspeed and humidity levels – just to name a few,” says Stuart. “Within the ventilation guide, producers can find the tools to calculate air inlet and air outlet requirements to achieve the stack effect, along with a comparison of different roofing materials.”

Scrutinising future of UK milling and malting A new report suggests Brexit will have a considerable impact on the UK’s milling industry under a range of trade scenarios but the malting sector is in a far better position to weather the storm.

T

he ‘what-if’ analysis was commissioned

by AHDB to help millers and maltsters with their business strategies

ahead of Brexit.

It also aims to help give insight into long-term implications on planting and highlight potential impacts on grain prices.

The report – Brexit scenarios: Impacts on the UK’s milling and malting sectors – assesses the impact of three post-Brexit trade scenarios on supply and demand for milling wheat, malting barley, flour and malt.

Firstly, a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the EU agreeing zero tariffs, secondly a unilateral approach where imports are tariff free but exports are subject to tariffs and thirdly mutual application of World Trade Organisation (WTO) tariffs in the case of a ‘hard Brexit’.

UK flour trade is likely to experience significant disruption post-Brexit, even if a FTA is negotiated. This is partly due to UK

mills’ reliance on global imports of high-quality milling wheat, which may which may disqualify UK flour from preferential access to EU market.

This will impact mills on the British mainland if they lose free access to this market via the crossborder trade. By far the biggest impact could be the loss of trade with the Republic of Ireland, which currently receives two thirds of its flour from mainland British mills.

The outlook is more positive for the malting sector. With almost all UK malt currently exported to nonEU countries, trading arrangements with the EU would have little impact.

“Up to now our trading arrangements with the EU have been of critical importance and this report clearly shows, whatever the outcome of Brexit, business-asusual is not going to be an option.”

Second wheats offer a profitable option this season Second wheats offer a profitable cropping option this season, if the effects of soil-borne diseases are managed correctly. ndrew Bourne, Seeds Manager for T Denne and Sons, explains that although growers are nervous about how autumn plantings will progress, the attractive wheat price is likely to mean that the area of second wheat grown will increase modestly.

Mr Bourne, who sells seed directly to arable farms in the south east, explains that the current wheat price of £160 to £165/t ex-farm, offers growers the opportunity to lock in to forward values for harvest 2019.

“With modern advancements, plant breeders have been able to produce top quality Group 1, 2 and 3 wheat varieties for use as a second cereal, meaning more farmers are growing second wheats as a viable option,” he says.

“Growers who are looking to take advantage of this and target quality markets with a second wheat, can make a good profit margin on the crop.

“However, soil-borne diseases such as takeall remain a major threat to profitability of second cereals, reducing yields by up to 30 percent, if not managed from the outset.”

He adds that variety choice, drilling date, seed rate and deciding whether to use treated seed can all influence second wheat profitability.

“Most of my customers that grow second wheats will select varieties for their hardiness and ability to cope with stresses that typically result from take-all infection,” he says.

“However, around 90 percent also request a seed dressed with Latitude (silthiofam), as it’s

proven to protect the seed against the take-all pathogen and reduces the risk of significant crop losses from the disease,” he says.

Laurence Power, Technical Manager at Certis, explains that selecting a seed dressed with silthiofam is a good insurance policy for the crop, even in later drilled situations.

“Silthiofam creates a zone of protection around vulnerable emerging roots, helping to suppress the take-all pathogen. This helps the plant to develop robust rooting to take up water and nutrients more readily, and gives the crop chance to grow away from the disease and produce a quality and high yielding grain.

“Trials have demonstrated that this positive effect on yield, grain quality and specific weight can be achieved in crops drilled from early October through to November.”

Max competition will encourage entrants and their agronomists to push their crops harder than current farm practice by examining key areas such as establishment, nutrition, disease control and bioscience from the soil upwards, and adopting appropriate agronomy.

Judges will evaluate the economic and practical viability of the systems and pull the findings together to highlight best practices that can be readily implemented on farm to drive crop output.

Multi-million-pound financial opportunities from on-farm AD There are “multi-million-pound financial opportunities” from on-farm anaerobic digestion (AD) plants across the UK, according to the trade body for the AD industry and a leading renewable energy project funder. n-farm AD plants allow farmers to convert agricultural wastes (such as manures and slurries) and purpose-grown crops (often grown as part of a traditional rotation) into renewable heat and power and nutrient-rich biofertiliser. There are currently 334 AD plants using agricultural feedstocks across the UK, up from just 66 in 2013.

Charlotte Morton, Chief Executive of the Anaerobic Digestion & Bioresources Association (ADBA), said: “There are multi-million-pound opportunities in refinancing and upgrading the over 300 onfarm AD plants now operating across the UK to make these plants more efficient and deliver greater financial and environmental value. We estimate that the value of operational expenditure on all UK on-farm AD plants will be £150 million per annum by 2020.

“With a further 300 on-farm AD plants having received planning permission and the potential for the current number of on-farm AD plants to increase ten-fold, these financial and environmental opportunities are only going to increase over the coming years.”

energy funders Privilege Finance, agreed that the opportunities for on-farm AD are widespread: “Having invested over £300m in agricultural and food waste renewable energy projects, we know from experience that AD is a viable way of creating energy from what would typically be considered waste products.”

Agricultural plants have been the primary driver of AD growth over the past five years, and the agricultural sector is now the largest in the AD industry, outstripping wastewater and food waste both by number of plants and energy capacity. Of the 54 new AD plants commissioned in 2017, over three quarters were agricultural plants.

ADBA estimates that there are at least 4,300 dairy farms across the UK with dairy herds of 150 cows or more for which AD would be viable. Only two of the 90 million tonnes of farm wastes produced in the UK are currently recycled through AD, but recycling all farm wastes would fulfil around 90% of the Committee on Climate Change’s 2030 decarbonisation target for agriculture by reducing emissions from agricultural wastes.

"With opportunities to reduce agricultural emissions, decarbonise the grid and generate

more green gas for the UK network, it’s undeniable that on-farm AD can help the government to achieve its Carbon Budgets,” Mr Gerrard added.

ADBA recently called on the government to provide clear and meaningful incentives for farmers to introduce AD into their farming operations and use digestate-derived biofertiliser as part of its proposed Agriculture Bill.

Dairy farm to save £3,000 a year - by installing new heat pump A dairy farm is set to save more than £3,000 a year, with an astounding payback period of under two years, thanks to changes made to its wash-down system through specialist renewable energy consultants, Greenio.

he Greenio team worked with the Sowray family at its Sheriff Hutton farm, in North Yorkshire, to specify, supply and install a 16kilowatt HT Daikin air source heat pump, with a 150-litre hot water cylinder and new immersion.

The farm will see a return on its investment within two years through a reduction in heating costs, from £3,300 a year to an anticipated £943. The farm will also see earnings from the Renewable Heat Incentive – where the government pays a business for each KWH it produces – at an expected £783 per annum.

Anna Wooster, managing director of Greenio, which was set up in 2013 and is based in Lincolnshire, said: “The work at the Sowray Farm is the ideal example of how we can help agricultural businesses through the intelligent application of renewable energy. The Sowray team can expect to make savings of over £57,148 across the next 20 years which demonstrates the significant impact an investment in renewable energy can have.

“Air source heat pumps use a fan to draw energy from the outside air to start the refrigerant boiling process – delivering high efficiency hot water and low temperature heating outputs. The result is that our customers enjoy the benefits of a system that delivers significant savings in fuel costs and carbon emissions compared with fossil fuel installations.

“The project was a pilot scheme for us as the air source heat pump had never been used in this way before. Because of this, manufacturers Daikin donated the kit to the farm for free to enable us to trial it – which has turned out to be a huge success.”

Matthew Sowray, one of the owners of Sowray Farms and the fifth generation to manage the business, said: “The entire milking system needs to be completely washed down and flushed through at least twice a day. For hygiene reasons, heated water is better for this process. Previously, we would use hot water in the morning – and cold water in the evenings – due to the cost implications. Thanks to the new pump installed, we can now afford to use hot water on both occasions.

“Becoming environmentallyfriendly is really important to us as a family and a business. We previously installed solar panels and this has worked well for us in terms of return on investment so we started to consider other renewable options.

Large-scale solar makes a comeback Large-scale solar power projects are set to make a comeback as costs decline – and landowners should act now to secure rental agreements. ccording to independent power consultant Roadnight Taylor, demand for largescale solar is set for a revival, with developers returning to the market after three years of impasse. “In 2015 the Government announced the end of the Feed in Tariff and Renewable Obligation incentives, which killed the solar market,” explains chief executive Hugh Taylor. “Since then, the renewables industry has been waiting for a time when the cost of solar technology has reduced

sufficiently to make further schemes worthwhile.”

Solar costs have since reduced by 20-30% a year, at the same time as wholesale energy prices have soared by nearly 60% - which means developers are back in the market. “Solar operators are starting to secure power purchase agreements with large corporate organisations like Amazon and Google, which have committed to using 100% renewable energy,” says Mr Taylor. “These operators anticipate the first schemes to be built in 2019, with the pace picking up into 2021 and 2022.”

This means developers are

already on the lookout for suitable sites. Typically, these will be upwards of 40 acres, relatively flat and in an area of good solar irradiation, he adds. Importantly, they will also be in an area with good grid connection capacity remaining. “Ground rents will vary considerably depending on the site, but offers can exceed £150,000 a year for a 25-year lease for larger schemes.”

However, it’s important that landowners act fast – because grid capacity is severely limited. “If there is capacity on your part of the network it will only be enough for one scheme. If you’ve got a

good site you need to secure that capacity for yourself before someone gets in first.”

To get the best deal, it’s also vital to act independently from a developer, warns Mr Taylor. “You should take professional advice – our ‘Stop/Go’ study costs from £350 to see whether a site has true potential. We can then secure the grid rights for you, and market your site to multiple developers so you retain control and get the best terms available.”

BVD in Wales - over half of herds screened as extra push is launched Gwaredu BVD, the national programme to eradicate BVD from the Welsh national herd is well ahead of target and, just one year in, over 50% of farms in Wales have been screened – but now the campaign is being ramped up to get widespread adoption. ovine Viral Diarrhoea (BVD) is a viral disease in cattle that causes immunosuppression and reproductive failure. The disease can reduce fertility, increase incidences of abortion and cause pneumonia in affected stock, creating drastic, long-lasting personal and financial effects on all affected farms.

The welfare and financial consequences are significant, with an approximate cost of £4,500 per year for the average beef herd, and £15,000 for dairy herds as a result of poor fertility, reduced milk yields, low daily live weight gains, fever, diarrhoea and respiratory problems.

Screening is free, and the programme also provides up to £500 for livestock farmers to work with their vet, but this funding will run out in 2020 when testing is likely to be compulsory, so a new campaign is being launched to reach all farmers in the country and get them to act now to stop the disease spreading.

Welsh Government Cabinet Secretary for Energy, Planning and Rural Affairs, Lesley Griffiths AM complimented the programme in her visit to the Gwaredu (Welsh for ‘Eradicate’) BVD stand at this year’s Royal Welsh Show in July, using social media to praise work so far: “Impressed they’ve screened 50% of farms in Wales for Bovine Viral Diarrhoea - a big milestone considering I only launched the programme less than a year ago.”

The Gwaredu BVD £10 million three year voluntary screening programme is available to all 12,000 Welsh cattle farms, and is managed

by Coleg Sir Gâr’s Agriculture Research Centre in partnership with the Royal Veterinary College. It involves BVD screening at the same time as TB testing to provide the necessary support and guidance to ensure farmers can correctly and quickly identify herds infected with BVD. Support will also be available to find the persistently infected (PI) animals from infected herds.

John Griffiths, manager of the Agriculture Research Centre at Coleg Sir Gâr’s Gelli Aur campus said: “We are hugely encouraged by the take-up of the screening programme so far

from Welsh farmers, but we are under no illusions that the next two years will be a challenge if we want to eradicate the disease, as has happened in several European countries. BVD in cattle is widespread in Wales, and the costs are high, so we’ll be ramping up our activities to ensure farmers understand and realise the benefits of screening, and we make Wales BVD free.”

Eradicating BVD is a priority of the Wales Animal Health and Welfare Framework Group, and is funded by the Welsh Government’s Rural Development Programme. The disease remains in the national herd by the presence of persistently infected cattle. These are infected in the womb and excrete virus for all their life causing a problem to all the cattle on the farm.

By testing young stock, the programme intends to identify herds that have BVD present on the farm and support these in order to remove the infected animals. Testing is carried out at the annual TB test on the farm and will require five animals between nine and 18 months to be blood sampled, and these will be

tested for BVD antibodies. If there are BVD antibodies present on the farm, then finding and removing PI animals is recommended.

Dr Neil Paton, Lecturer in Farm Animal Health and Production at the Royal Veterinary College is Veterinary Technical lead on the programme. Neil said: “Tests show that more than a quarter of Welsh beef and dairy herds are infected with BVD, so we need to help livestock farmers across Wales to work with us to diagnose if their herd has been exposed to the virus, and to seek and remove any infected animals.”

The T-panels are press-hardened and rounded, dimensionally stable, wear-resistant and protect the transmission elements against wear and structural loads.

New folding system: ready in next to no time Both models have been equipped with an all-new folding concept which has been developed with the goal of reducing folding times significantly in order to keep setup times to a minimum. On the ORBIS 600 SD, the side units fold equally to the centre while those of the ORBIS 750 overlap each other symmetrically. This compact folding system offers the operator an optimal view for on-road travel. Both models have a transport width of 3.0 m, a factor which simplifies licensing.

Both models are available with an integrated transport system to

enable them to be licensed for onroad use. The system is operated from the cab. Once the transport system has been activated, two wheels on the road bear the main load of the front attachment in order to comply with the permissible front axle loads of the JAGUAR. The Glamping Show Review The exhibitors at the Glamping Show last week welcomed the inclement weather with gusto as it meant they could really showcase how well their structures stood up to Britain’s variable climate and how warm and cosy their structures are even when the temperature drops. ex Dovey, of Universal Glamping Pods, said: “The variable weather we have had these last few days has suited us enormously.

The high winds and rain, especially, on the first day showed just how strong our structures are and we were also able to showcase our new innovative heating system, which warmed up many visitors throughout the Show.”

Much like the sector it represents, the Show is constantly evolving and welcomed thousands of visitors from all corners of the UK and overseas throughout the three days of the Show, who were greeted by more exhibitors than ever before. As suppliers recognise the value of the Glamping Show visitors had the opportunity to compare and contrast not only a huge variety of glamping structures but also similar suppliers for services and accessories including bedding products, heating and sanitary suppliers, insurance and planning advice to name a few.

Owner, Andrew, had this to say: “We are in the hospitality business and run a B&B but we are looking to develop this to a more selfcatering offering so we came to the Glamping show to look at the different structures and work out what would suit us but also look at the other areas such as sanitation, marketing and the technical side of things with what’s involved and how to go about installing the structures. The Show has ticked all the boxes for me.”

The knowledge bank also evolved this year as the education offered by the Show stepped up a gear with the introduction of a number of short intensive courses to provide visitors with a more indepth knowledge of specific areas of running your own glamping site, which was in addition to the hugely popular comprehensive seminar programme and one to one ‘Meet the Experts’ meetings.

Chris Pike of Hey Burt was one of the specialists available to speak to in ‘Meet the Experts’, who had this to say: “We were busy from the moment the doors opened on both Thursday and Friday. I talked to a massive range of people from those who have

barely even thought about the beginning of their potential glamping site to those who are well established business owners.

It was great to see such a diverse range of visitors attending the Show.”

Campsite owners, Simon & Lisa, have been coming to the Show for the last three years and said: “We are in the process of upgrading our campsite to a glamping site. We came specifically to speak to a planning expert and Barry Davies of Davies & Co was extremely helpful in assisting us to dot the i’s and cross the t’s. The Show is constantly evolving, and we find it really useful to come back each year to keep up with all the changes in structures, services and especially legislation to make sure we are offering our guests the best experience we can.”

Jess Holliday, of Yurts For Life, has seen a huge shift in the last three years in how knowledgeable visitors have become and had this to say: “What we have noticed is there has been an massive evolution in the glamping market in recent years and in the three years we have been exhibiting we

have seen visitors in our first year who were just at the planning stages of their business and now those people are returning to the Show knowing exactly what they want and are more knowledgeable about the industry, which the Show has had a huge part in providing for them, giving them the education and knowledge to make an informed choice. It has been a phenomenal Show!”

After four successful years of the Glamping Show the organisers wanted to give something back.

So, teaming up with Kerry Roy of Camp Kátur, they launched GlampAid, a new industry charity to help those made homeless by conflict and disaster, welcoming long-time supporter of the Glamping Show, TV presenter, author and upcycler, Max McMurdo, as its ambassador.

Although the doors have closed on this year’s Show the organisers already have new and innovative ideas in the pipeline to enhance the Show in 2019. Make the Glamping Show a date in your diary for 2019 and join us from Thursday 19 to Saturday 21 September 2019.

As well as presentations by experts and seminars, over 100 exhibitors made the most of the three-day event.

So, dear reader, what you really want to know is … was it worth attending?

The short answer is yes.

If you are seeking to have a day or two in which you can completely gorge yourself on a gazillion glamping ideas, then this is the place for you.

And while a visit to the Glamping Show is, for many, a serious step forward in their diversification project, the event also has a slightly dreamy quality.

SALTEX 2018 – the exhibition shaped by the industry When the 73rd annual SALTEX exhibition opens its doors at the NEC, Birmingham on 31 October and 1 November, visitors can not only look forward to a comprehensive product display spread over three large halls, but they will also gain a great deal of expert information through the free-to-attend extensive education programme of CPD-accredited seminars and benefit from knowledge-gaining opportunities through other unique show features. he exhibition is the longeststanding event of its kind in the world, having been held almost every year since 1938. UK Fencing market worth over £1 billion Over the past six months the Association of Fencing Industries has carried out the first market research report of its kind to be completed within the last 15 years. In order to be treated as a major contributor to the UK economy by government and other policy making bodies, this knowledge was seen by the AFI board as a strategic tool to further the interests of our industry. he report concludes that the UK fencing market is worth over £1 billion, and around 60,000 people throughout the UK are employed by the installation companies alone. The £1.105 billion market is almost equally divided between materials and installation.

‘Our findings are immensely useful in going forward and will form the backbone of our future strategy,’ said Ian Ripley, CEO of the AFI, who was active in compiling the report from numerous industry sources.’

The report also highlights that over 50% of fencing contractors are smaller operations. This means that the AFI need to attract more of those smaller companies to become members of the organisation and play their part in an industry of which, collectively, they represent a significant part.’

Probably the most significant issue illustrated by the report is that the installation sector alone has a need for around 1,000 new employees to be trained and ready for work every year. ‘This is fundamental to the future of the industry and everyone who relies on it. We need to explore this in greater depth and look at how we can address the problem. The industry offers a very good opportunity for young people and, while some bodies already understand the position and offer training, there needs to be a wider appreciation of our needs. We need to get closer to educational institutions and seek to get young people to train for and join our industry both through the educational system and direct through members themselves. As an

essential part of this process the AFI have been heavily involved in developing a new ‘Fencing Installer Trailblazer Apprenticeship’ and this should become available for use early in October 2018.

Although the Association of Fencing Industries was originally formed in 2016 by the coming together of two organisations (The European Fencing Industry Association and the Fencing Contractors Association), both of which were mainly based in the installation sector, the leadership recognised that there was no single body representative of the market, in total. The opportunities for the new association to become truly representative of the industry are enormous.

In order to take its rightful place in the UK market, the fencing industry needs an organisation to gather together all its diverse sectors. The AFI is in a unique position to do this. The information we now have will enable us to move forward as an association and prove to public and private organisations alike that our industry is important to the economy of the UK across a number of sectors. It gives us strength in taking forward the voice of the industry and demonstrating that we need to be heard, where previously we may have been overlooked.’

Based on this new report and with support from the market, the AFI will be able to put both its membership and the industry it represents in to the position of influence in the UK economy it deserves.

Over the past 2 years the Association of Fencing Industries has been steadily

strengthening relations with organisations related to the interests of its members.

Organisations such as Build UK (which brings together the specialist trade associations in the construction industry and provides our members with free credit checks and access to legal representation) and many others who contribute to the knowledge and understanding of our diverse market.

We have seen an increase in membership, but, as this report shows, there is a long way to go as there are many installation and manufacturing companies active in this market who have yet to become members. We need to get the message out there that we are not just an association for bigger companies, but representative of all. We need to demonstrate the benefits of being a member and see that it is worthwhile. Membership fees are built around a sliding scale to make it affordable to all types of businesses.

We will have representatives on our stand at Fencex, on October 17th which will give us an opportunity to meet contractors and manufacturers and explain our aspirations for the association face-to-face. We are hoping that everyone with an interest in the market will take the opportunity to come and talk to us.’

AFI will also be hosting a Fencex seminar in the afternoon with addressing the issues surrounding FISS/CSCS cards and hosting a question and answer session, with Lantra representatives in attendance including Stephanie Craig-Smith (Head of Highways and Construction).

Trailed post driver brings hammer muscle to small or elderly tractors The latest innovation in fencing equipment from Bryce Suma is a high output heavyduty post driver that can be operated by a tractor of modest size and weight. ock Bryce of the Kelso-based manufacturer points out that normally, Suma heavy-duty post drivers carried on the rear threepoint hitch need a substantial tractor to maintain secure stability on site and during road travel.

“But not everyone has need of a 120-150hp tractor, so our new Suma TR400 is a trailed design that can be operated by a small tractor, whether new or quite elderly,” he explains. “As long as the tractor can summon up a 2530 litres/min oil supply to operate the 400kg hammer at a sensible speed, then that’s all you need.”

The Suma TR400 has all the performance and operating features of a top-end tractormounted post driver but with the added benefit of storage space for up to 20 strainer posts, 100 round or square fencing stakes or eight to 10 rolls of 100m net, plus barbed or plain wire.

The chassis houses a secure container for a chainsaw and other hand tools, there are tool trays for fencing gear on the drawbar and adjacent to the hydraulic controls, and vertical slots for storing wooden support blocks to place beneath the two stabilising hydraulic jacks.

These extend from the frame by the offside wheel and from the bottom of the mast as part of a package of hydraulic features that also provide mast side-shift and two-way vertical alignment.

the mast for driving fence posts or the patented integral hydraulic swing-around rock spike.

In addition, the drawbar design allows the chassis to be ‘jackknifed’ at up to 90 degrees to the tractor to get into tight or awkward corners and wheels set out wide with large flotation tyres provide good stability and flotation on soft ground.

As on all Bryce Suma post drivers, the mast on the new TR400 is a two-stage telescopic design that provides 3.6m of hammer drop to strike the steel cap that holds and protects the post.

“The unique and patented auto tele mast provides the operator with a choice of any length of hammer stroke without having to make any adjustments to the mast itself,” explains Mr Bryce.

“It also reduces overall height to avoid overhead cables or branches when working amongst trees, and also for transport when the mast is set at an angle to further reduce overall height and bring the weight inwards.”

Other patented features include a greasing arrangement that allows both sides of the telescopic mast to be lubricated without the operator having to clamber on to the machine’s frame.

Bryce Suma has tested the new machine on a modern 47hp utility tractor, a regular 60hp farm tractor and on elderly two- and four-wheel drive tractors, which can be fitted with an auxiliary tank and ptodriven hydraulic pump if their builtin hydraulic system is inadequate.

Forestry sector launches plan to work together to adapt to climate change Actions to address significant gaps in forestry policy, research and practice are necessary to deal with the unprecedented pace and scale of environmental change, say forestry organisations launching a new action plan at APF the UK's largest forestry show. limate change is threatening the health of trees and woods and requires a co-ordinated response to help them adapt and become resilient to its current and projected impacts.

The Forestry Climate Change Working Group (FCCWG) – public and private organisations representing the 35 signatories to the 2015 Forestry Climate Change Accord- have identified 13 priority actions and pledged to work together on them over the next five years.

The “Action plan for climate change adaptation of forests, woods and trees in England” address major gaps in current forestry policy, research and practice. The 13 priority actions are the result of a rigorous process of consultation carried out over the last three years, and are consistent with Defra’s Tree Health Resilience Strategy published earlier this year.

The plan also recognises that, in the face of climate change, many traditional forest and

woodland management practices need to be revised. Some of the gaps identified include: lack of woodland management by owners; insufficient diversity of planting stock from nurseries; limited uptake of silvicultural practices which limit risk; and, the need for better education and information.

Launching the plan at the APF Exhibition on behalf of the FCCWG, Sir Harry Studholme, Chair of Forestry Commission England said: “Our forests, woodlands and trees are already facing unprecedented challenges from environmental change and the changes will continue. The impacts of this will alter the ecology, the appearance and the management needs of these woods and forests. We have to adapt because if we do not the costs will be paid by all of us for generations to come.

“That is why I welcome the launch of this plan to drive forward a truly collaborative response by the forestry sector.

“It is a remarkable achievement that such a wide range of organisations have been able to

agree actions that should ensure our legacy will be of woodlands resilient to the changes they face.”

Simon Lloyd, Chief Executive of the Royal Forestry Society and chair of the FCCWG added: “The future of our forests and trees is too important to leave to chance. By coming together as a sector, with clear timelines and accountability, we can ensure that climate change adaptation has the profile and priority required to drive change that will make a material difference to the resilience of forests and trees.

Forest Research has played an active role in the development of the Action Plan, including summarising scientific information about the risks and opportunities that our changing climate poses to forestry, and hosting in October 2017, a workshop with senior forestry sector leaders, to identify priority climate change adaptation actions for the sector over the next five years.

You may have heard the acronym ‘WLTP’ mentioned in the motoring media recently But what does it mean exactly? And how will it affect you? Our simple guide tells you everything you need to know.

LTP stands for ‘Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure’ and as the name suggests, it’s the new global standard for testing the emissions and efficiency of all cars sold new today. It’s been designed to replace the old NEDC (New European Driving Cycle) test that the industry has used for years and unlike its predecessor, has been designed to more accurately reflect how cars are actually used in real life. Going forward, this means that quoted MPG figures should more accurately match what’s achievable under normal driving.

WLTP testing features much more ‘on road’ driving and will also take into consideration available features and options on a vehicle.

From air conditioning to electric seats, every additional feature adds to the weight of the vehicle and, combined with its usage, ultimately affects emissions and fuel economy. WLTP ensures that the use of such features is clearly recognised in testing, providing a more accurate view of how the consumer would use their car in real life.

What this means in effect is that after retesting many vehicles emissions figures will

appear to have risen, despite those vehicles producing the exact same amount of Carbon Monoxide (CO2) and Nitrogen Oxides (NOX) as they did before but will now take into consideration the additional weight from optional extras. In some cases, MPG figures may take a small tumble, too – as a result of cars being driven harder and more ‘realistically’ during the new test cycle.

The main difference between the two tests is that WLTP is far more stringent; with a much longer test drive aspect, higher maximum speeds on test, a longer test cycle and a greater number of actual test demands. Even details like the variance of gear shift points are now taken into account, to make sure that the powertrain sees everything from a gentle commute to a spirited motorway blast.

WLTP has been introduced to allow all car buyers to see emissions data that more accurately reflects the type of driving that they’re likely to achieve – and therefore allow them to make a better-informed decision on the environmental credentials and fuel economy of their chosen car before they buy. What this may also mean, going forward, is that the Road Fund Licence (or road tax) and company car

tax for a model may go up, as these are currently based on what comes out of the tailpipe. For every car under the new protocol, that’s most likely to be higher.

Although WLTP has actually been applicable for all new model introductions since September 2017, it became compulsory to all new car registrations from September 2018.

Any new model introduced after this time must conform to the new guidelines, but the EU has made allowance for any older models that don’t conform to be sold for up to one more year afterwards.

Fast-forward into the future and by 2020 the entire European car market will have one single, simple WLTP-CO2 standard to allow manufacturers, purchasers, legislators and fleet managers to accurately compare and target each and every car on sale. Although the figures will have changed, the cars themselves remain exactly the same. It’s simply the test that governs them that has changed. It’s fair to say that Europe still leads the way in ensuring that the vehicles on its roads are the cleanest on the planet.

The key to its nuanced approach to practicality and dynamic behaviour is the latest technology from Volkswagen Group and the MQB-A long wheelbase architecture that underpins the large SUV. The vehicle’s Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC) setup gives the perfect balance between a sporty feeling when you are behind the wheel, and a more comfortable ride when you need to cover longer distances, on different types of roads. The driver can select which setting they prefer, but the system can also adapt automatically, modifying the ride depending on

the road surface and driving style.

The smoothness of the ride quality is matched by the performance, efficiency and reliability of the powertrain options.

All engines benefit from directinjection, turbocharging and startstop technology and offer power outputs of between 150PS and 190PS. Two petrol variants will be available: a four-cylinder 1.5 litre TSI unit that produces 150PS and is linked to a six-speed manual transmission powering the front wheels, and a 2.0 litre, 190PS offering mated to a seven-speed DSG gearbox and 4Drive total traction system. There are two diesel options, both 2.0 litre TDIs, with power outputs of 150PS and 190PS respectively. The 150PS variant can be connected to either a front-wheel drive, six-speed manual or seven-speed DSG with 4Drive system. The higher powered version is solely available in 4Drive/seven-speed DSG gearbox.

Later, the SEAT Tarraco will also benefit from alternative powertrain technologies.

The new SEAT Tarraco has all the driving assistance systems needed to make driving more comfortable and secure, even in more demanding driving environments. Well known systems such as Lane Assist and Front Assist including bicycle and pedestrian detection are standard in Europe, while systems such as Blind Spot Detection, Traffic Sign Recognition, Traffic Jam Assist, ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control), Light Assist and Emergency Assist are available as options.

Taking safety to the next level for SEAT, the Tarraco SUV also includes Emergency Call, Pre-crash Assist and Rollover Detection, meaning no matter what the situation, the vehicle is designed to meet the most demanding safety standards in order to make the large SUV the benchmark model in the segment.

Pre-sales of the SEAT Tarraco will start in December.
