Adding value to chopped Electric tips straw from CityFort Improve rumen function by improving rations.

idland Feed Services are pleased to introduce a new straw chopping and treatment service using Maxammon.

Maxammon is an exclusive package which raises the overall protein of the chopped straw; it reduces the non-digestible fibre fraction and converts the straw into an alkaline product. This will significantly improve the natural buffering of the rumen as the chopped straw will improve rumen function and the alkaline status will help buffer acidic based rations. Maxammon softens the straw fibres making them more digestible and as a result, increases the feed value of all types of straw.

It is predicted that straw supplies will be tight in some areas this harvest, especially with little carryover stocks from last year, so treating straw with Maxammon will ensure that what you do use for feeding goes further.

Several different body options are available on the base chassis, which is priced at ÂŁ19,150 plus VAT, to suit a very wide range of uses such as in and around shopping centres for recycle waste and rubbish collection. The electric tipping body is also ideal for councils, contractors and landscapers for silent working in grounds maintenance and around parks, amenity and leisure areas.

Built on a lightweight aluminium frame, the CityFort with electric tipping body and sides is available for a little over ÂŁ22,000 plus VAT, making it a very reasonable workhorse given the extremely low running costs and its environmentally friendly operation. The 48v electric engine has enough power to carry a 530kg payload and on a full charge it can travel up to 80 miles. The built-in charger is simply plugged in

The dimensions of the CityFort are such that it is ideal for narrow streets and drives and it can also be easily transported in a large van. In its fixed body version the vehicle is well suited for local delivery and site work, loading and carrying equipment and materials without fuss and the associated fuel costs of petrol and diesel vehicles.

A box van body with double swing doors is also available with the option of a side door fitted.

Rexroth components keep SAM sprayers on track Bosch Rexroth has supplied a unique solution to Sands Agricultural Machinery (SAM) Ltd for its innovative sliding axle crop sprayer.

exroth has supplied microprocessor controls and display for the revolutionary SAM crop sprayer which allows the operator to automatically change track widths from the cab, to save time and therefore money. Bosch Rexroth also completed all of the programming work and assisted

in commissioning the sprayer and control system. The expertise of the Rexroth team was vital in taking this unique product to market.

The user system controls eight Rexroth proportional valves which in turn drive eight hydraulic cylinders which change track width and maintain

steering geometry. Each cylinder has been designed to include position feedback so it can be monitored at all times both during width setting and when the system is locked whilst travelling on the road. The solution also makes it the only crop sprayer that is legal to be on the road as it is fully compliant with the 70/311/EEC European Union Directive which requires a vehicle to be steerable in the event of hydraulic, pneumatic or electrical component failure.

The system puts operator usability first with the track width being fully adjustable from the cab. The screen displays cylinder positions and other vehicle data. This means that the machine can arrive at the field on a road-friendly track and be easily adjusted to the correct tramline width within seconds.

John Ayres of Bosch Rexroth, commented: “The sliding axel crop sprayer from SAM saves the end user time and effort as previously it would have to be

adjusted manually. The mobile electronics products that Rexroth has specified make this an easy to use and advantageous solution for SAM customers and we’re proud to have the company name linked to such an innovative piece of technology.”

Traditionally, self-propelled crop sprayers had to continually change track widths or become set at the UK standard of 72”.

SAM engineers first designed a new sliding axel sprayer in 1998 that was easier to adjust manually or could be fitted with hydraulics. With wider cereal tramlines and the introduction of three-row potato bed system , the need for fully adjustable hydraulic axels soon arose. SAM approached Bosch Rexroth to achieve this product vision.

Figures reveal farming value to economy NFU finds that UK farming plays a crucial role. ew figures confirm that the UK farming industry is playing a crucial role in stabilising the economy the NFU said today, as it emerged that the industry contributed £7.4billion to the wider economy in 2010, a 5.3 per cent increase year-on-year.

Farm output also increased, recording a 5.4 per cent rise as the value of UK agricultural production topped £20.7billion, according to the Defra UK Agricultural Accounts figures released yesterday.

NFU chief economist Phil Bicknell said: “Hot on the heels of some gloomy figures for the wider UK economy, these figures are a reminder of the role farming can and will play in leading the country back to sustainable economic growth.

NFU members have already told us they are confident about the longer-term future of the industry, in sharp contrast to many other business sectors. I expect these latest figures will add to that conviction and anticipate positive implications for growth, investment and output in agriculture.

“However, these figures show that farming still faces challenging business conditions.

The overall profitability of UK farming fell by some £173m (-3.6 per cent) in 2010 as the industry saw input costs rise by 5.5 per cent. Projections from Defra show higher input costs will again influence 2011 profitability, but indicate a two per cent rise in farming’s total income in the

current year. And of course, this headline performance is not representative of trends across all agricultural sectors or individual farm businesses. In sectors like dairy and poultry for example, rising input costs have outpaced any change in farmgate prices. Elsewhere, farmers and food processors are increasingly conscious of potential downward price pressure from supermarkets that could squeeze margins.

“This demonstrates the real challenge farmers and growers face in generating profitable returns from food production.

For policy makers, it provides a clear indication of the on-going need for a strong CAP. One that underpins the economics of farm production, while incorporating measures to correct the distortions of the supply chain, and helps farmers realise profitable returns from their marketplace.”

“A lot of what we heard in this week’s Autumn Statement was designed at giving confidence to the wider economy and boosting business growth. Agriculture has a good foundation, with rising optimism and increasing economic output. Yet farming still needs the right signals to invest and prosper. As we digest the policy measures set out by the Chancellor, it’s worth remembering that we also look to the agri-food supply chain and Europe’s policy makers for positive signals when it comes to investing in our farms and planning for the long term.”

FUW highlights CAP reform worries to key EU decision makers From left, Emyr Jones, Wales MEP Jill Evansí staff member Sara Medi, European Free Alliance expert agriculture adviser Daniel Wylie and Glyn Roberts. he Farmers’ Union of Wales today described a series of meetings with MEPs at the heart of decisionmaking on Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) reform as extremely constructive.

During a twoday visit, FUW president Emyr Jones, deputy president Glyn Roberts and senior members of the union’s policy department met key members of the EU agriculture committee including Portugese MEP and Rapporteur for the CAP reform proposals Luis Capoulas Santos, his shadow Rapporteur for direct payments Mairead McGuinness and Welsh MEPs. During the high level talks the FUW underlined the significant impact the Commission’s proposals would have on farming in Wales.

“Whilst the greening of pillar 1 has quite rightly become a major focus of debate amongst farmers and policy makers, we also used the opportunity to highlight the fundamental problems current

proposals to use claims made in 2014 as the basis for allocating future payment entitlements would create in Wales,” said Mr Jones.

Discussions on issues such as the need for a realistic transition period from historic to flat rate payments and the need for Member States and regions to have the flexibility to adapt the Regulations to reflect farming practise were also highlighted, said Mr Jones.

£20 million for farming and forestry businesses A new fund to help rural businesses increase profits and reduce their impact on the environment has been launched by Agriculture Minister Jim Paice. armers, foresters and horticulturalists can apply for grants of up to £25,000 to invest in green projects and new machinery so their businesses can grow in an environmentally friendly way.

The Farming and Forestry Improvement Scheme will fund new profit-boosting green schemes that: • save energy and reduce carbon emissions; • reduce dependence on artificial fertilizers through better use of manures; • improve soil quality; • improve animal health and welfare; • save and recycle water; and • promote woodland management by processing timber more efficiently.

Agriculture Minister Jim Paice said: “Growing our economy goes hand-in-hand with protecting and improving our environment.

We want rural businesses to thrive and this new fund will help farmers, foresters and horticulturists to boost their

profits and use greener and more efficient ways of working.”

The Farming and Forestry Improvement Scheme is part of Defra’s Rural Development Programme for England (RDPE).

Funds will be allocated between now and December 2013. Grants will cover a maximum of half of the total cost of projects in uplands areas and at most 40% of the total cost of projects in non uplands areas.

The Rural Development Programme for England (RDPE) aims to improve competitiveness in the agriculture and forestry sectors, safeguard and enhance the rural environment, foster competitive and sustainable rural businesses and thriving rural communities.

Under the Farming and Forestry Improvement Scheme, all farmers, foresters, contractors and horticulturalists in England are invited to apply for grants of between £2,500 and £25,000.

Applicants will be assessed on their ability to meet one or more of six objectives.

Some grants are available to

enable farmers to improve soil quality and reduce their use of artificial fertilisers through better use of farm slurries and manures. Others will help businesses to reduce or recover energy, saving money and reducing carbon dioxide emissions. Farmers, foresters and horticulturalists can apply for funding that will help them to

Adoption of new media technologies and social networking by European farmers Smartphones are here to stay and their usefulness will become more and more apparent as the take-up forges ahead. survey of farmers conducted by the Kleffmann Group has indicated that one in ten European farmers own a Smartphone and a similar percentage (9%) use at least one social networking site.

The survey also showed that uptake of such new technology varied considerably from country to country with 20% of farmers in Spain and Portugal owning a Smartphone and 15% of Danish and 14% of Slovakian farmers being on social networks.

The Kleffmann Group, partnered in the UK by Independent Business Resource Limited (IBR-Ltd), asked over 13,000 farmers across Europe about ownership and usage of Smartphone. “Ten per cent of farmers across Europe said that they owned a Smartphone, but there was significant variation between countries. The countries with the highest ownership of such phones were Spain and Portugal where twice as many farmers (20%) owned a Smartphone. Other countries where this technology was more widely adopted was Slovakia (16% of farmers), Austria (16%), Croatia (15%), Ukraine (15%) and Great Britain (12%). In Germany and Poland 11% of farmers owned a Smartphone.

At the other end of the scale in Turkey just 1% of farmers interviewed owned a Smartphone, followed by Belgium (4%), Italy (5%) and Bulgaria (6%),” says Karen Gralla, UK Project manager for the Kleffmann Group.

Karen explains that farmers who owned a Smartphone were also asked if they used its advanced functionality for professional purposes. “A creditable 41% of Smartphone owners in Europe reported that they did use its advanced functionality for their work. The most popular use was weather forecasts (cited by 37% as the main advanced use), followed by e-mails (18%), searching for agricultural information (18%),

seeking information on crop protection treatments (9%), price and price comparison(8%), stock market prices (8%) and calendar management (5%).”

Once again there was significant variation between European countries on uptake of advanced functionality of the Smartphone. Great Britain was the top country for using Smartphones more broadly for work purposes, with 62% of farmers saying they did so.

Other countries where farmers used advanced technology provided by their phones were Romania where 61% of farmers used advanced functions, Germany 58% of farmers, Denmark 55% of farmers, Italy 55%, France 54%, Turkey 50%, Bulgaria 48% and Belgium 47%. Countries less inclined to use advanced technology on their phones were Poland where just 16% of phone owners used this technology, Portugal 19% and Slovakia 20%.

Looking at Great Britain, Roger Pratchett of IBR-Ltd reports that, although 12% of GB farmers owned a Smartphone, a much higher percentage (62%) used it in an advanced way. “GB had the highest advanced usage of Smartphones, but was around mid-field in ownership rankings.

Other countries had the opposite pattern – Spanish farmers had the highest ownership (20%) but were one of the lowest uptake of advanced use (19% of owners).

Italy had low ownership (5%) but 55% of them used the phones in a more advanced way.”

He reports that the survey also asked farmers if they were on any social networking sites and, if a positive response, whether they took part in groups with an agricultural reference.

“Asking over 10,000 farmers in Europe, 9% said that they were on a social networking site, with

Denmark (15%), Slovakia (14%), Poland (14%), Ukraine (13%) and Croatia (13%) being more involved with social networking than the mean. Uptake of social networking was less popular in the Netherlands, with just 5% of farmers, Serbia (6%), Austria (6%) and Czech Republic (7%).”

“Two in five (20%) European farmers on social networks took part in groups with an agricultural reference. This was more frequent in Slovakia where 58% of farmers using social networks were involved with agricultural-based groups.

Ukraine (34% of farmers), Czech Republic, Germany and Portugal (all 33%) took part in agricultural social networks. In Great Britain 20% of farmers used agricultural-based groups, the same level as in Italy and Spain, but in Turkey just 3% of farmers were involved in agricultural groups,” says Roger.

“Great Britain was the top country for using Smartphones more broadly for work purposes, with 62% of farmers saying they did so.”

Roger concludes that this survey indicates a positive uptake of new technology by European farmers, but also shows that there is plenty of room for farmers to adopt Smartphones and social networking further and to make these new technologies essential part of their farming business.

Farmers help develop pioneering smartphone “agri-apps” T-Mobile have noticed their business customers in the farming industry are increasingly adopting smartphones. dozen farmers, the National Farmers Union (NFU) and EBLEX attended a brainstorm recently to develop the ultimate smartphone app for farmers. The brainstorm was hosted by T-Mobile and facilitated by a leading app developer to come up with lowcost apps that would help those in the agriculture industry.

The brainstorm was hosted after T-Mobile spotted its business customers in the farming industry increasingly adopting smartphones. The aim of the day was to raise awareness of the benefits smartphone technology can bring small businesses owners, such as farmers. It also helped highlight to mobile app developers - and those supplying the agriculture industry - how farmers are ready to embrace mobile technology which helps improve productivity and efficiency. The best apps from the day will now be taken forward and pitched to agriculture technology businesses.

As part of the brainstorm, one idea was put into practice on the day. A real cow had a QR code sprayed on it. This code links to a webpage so farmers can check its provenance and vaccination history instantly using a smartphone. This app, inspired by the 2008 film, The Dark Knight, links to a central camera located on a pole in the livestock field. The infrared camera identifies each animal by their heat signal. It sends push alerts to the farmer’s phone if the number of heat signals decreases. It also uploads this data to a central site, alerting other farmers in the area to potential rustling.

Real-time farm management app – using the smartphone’s GPS function, farmers can plot their land - they identify the area they want to calculate and physically go to each corner and take a GPS reading. From here, the farmer then calculates the approximate harvest size based on the choice of crops, which links to real-time index prices via 3G. The app would layer different information on their maps such as livestock in each field, track their movements and automatically upload this data to Defra to cut red tape (it currently has to be done manually).

QR code cow app – farmers can tag their cattle with chips to identify them. However, the scanning equipment costs £1,500 each. Instead, farmer would brand their cows with unique QR codes which, when scanned, would link people to the cow’s personalised webpage which includes its age, inoculation history, breed, etc. Any free QR code scanner app would work with the code which reduces costs for farmers.

Disease management app – farmers take photos of arable crop diseases on their smartphones, the app then uses visual search to automatically identify the disease.

The app matches disease identifiers such as specks on crop leaves to identify alternaria canker.

Once the disease is identified, experts can provide live advice via a video link, removing the need for expensive callout fees.

Health and safety app – employees on the farm install this location-aware-app so when they use dangerous equipment, it lets them know if they are trained to use it. The app links to the individual employee’s health and safety records, which are stored in the cloud. In an emergency, the app can shut down the equipment and call the emergency services with voice control.

Flying sheepdog drone app – farmers will be able to supplement their sheepdogs with flying drones they control with smartphones. A video feed on the phone will allow farmers to see what the drone sees and control their flocks of sheepremotely.

Martin Stiven, Vice President of Business for T-Mobile, said: "With farmers being one of our most important customers, we were keen to find out how mobile technology could really supercharge their business.

People frequently talk about small business owners being wedded to their smartphones but overlook that farmers are micro businesses in their own right, often adopting mobile technology well ahead of the field.

“The aim of the day was to raise awareness” “According to research in America, 94% of farmers now own a smartphone. It’s a trend we’re starting to see amongst British farmers as they look at how mobile technology can cost effectively increase productivity and boost efficiencies.”

Joseph Keating, Livestock Adviser at the National Farmers Union, said: “Farmers already work with a range of technologies on farm, from Global Positioning Systems to ensure inputs such as fertiliser are used efficiently on arable farms to using IT-based feeding systems for livestock.

“However, farmers will need to use even smarter technologies to help them meet the challenges ahead; producing more food and impacting less on the environment.

“It is exciting to see farmers involved in demonstrating the cutting edge of technology and what the future could hold.”

Sessions such as these have led T-Mobile to develop the first mobile phone plan designed for micro businesses, like farmers.

The plan features a free smartphone on a 12 month business mobile phone plan and ruggedised smartphone cases, protecting phones from the rigours of a farm environment.

Successful seminar staged to fight rural crime MP Nick Herbert describes Crimestoppers as “immensely important”. early 300 attendees were present at the recent national seminar aimed at stopping rural crime, hosted by crime-fighting charity Crimestoppers and the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO).

The Kettering Conference Centre event on 10 November, called “Closing the Gate on Criminality”, was the biggest rural crime seminar in the UK and was attended by members of rural communities, and national organisations. It featured a key speech by the Rt Hon Nick Herbert MP, Minister of State for Policing and Criminal Justice.

Crimestoppers’ Deputy Chief Executive Dave Cording said: “We were really pleased with the turnout. It was also good to have the Minister of State for Policing and Criminal Justice speak - it shows how vital this issue is nationally – and that he described Crimestoppers’ role as “immensely important”.

“A key point made was that

agricultural equipment such as tractors costing up to £150,000 is being stolen, sometimes by organised criminals who can get it out of the country within 24 hours – and may leave the rightful owners unable to carry on their day-to-day work without it. This strengthens our determination to “close the gate” on criminality in rural areas.

“The seminar covered many essential topics, including using new technology such as texting and social media to share vital information to fight rural crime.

We also discussed the need for community involvement, and sharing of information and intelligence.”

Rural crime can include theft of farm machinery and equipment, oil, diesel, batteries, metal for scrap value, tools, quad bikes, agricultural chemicals, tractors, and livestock such as sheep. An estimated £50 million to £70 million worth of plant and agricultural machinery is stolen nationally every year, and only

5% of this stolen property is ever recovered.

Dave Cording added: “We understand that rural communities are close-knit and trust is an important part of rural life, so people may be aware of who are committing these crimes, perhaps a neighbour or work colleague, but don’t feel comfortable giving this information directly to the police.

Potato industry honours Anthony Bambridge with coveted award Outstanding contribution to the potato sector recognised. nthony (Tony) Bambridge, co-founder of B & C Farming Ltd, has been awarded the 2011 British Potato Industry Award in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the sector.

Presenting the award at BP2011 at Harrogate (23 November), Potato Council chairman Allan Stevenson paid tribute to Mr Bambridge’s impressive career.

“I am delighted that Tony Bambridge has been recognized not only for being one of the industry’s leaders, but also the many hours he has put into the industry for the benefit of others as a leading light in grower representation,” said Mr Stevenson. “He was a founder member of the British Potato Council (BPC), a body that

brought together all the industry sectors (growers, traders and processors) to work for their mutual benefit. Furthermore, he has always been a keen supporter of Cambridge University Farm and its research team, who are key research providers to Potato Council.

Tony has been a leader in translating research into practice and making best use of up-todate information to build a strong business.”

Beginning his career in 1980 at Crane & Sons Farms Limited as a farm foreman, he became a Nuffield Scholar and studied production and marketing of potatoes and the influence of agricultural co-operatives. It was the inspiration of this scholarship that lead to the formation of a

potato growing business, B & C Potatoes Limited, in partnership with David Crane who regrettably died in a tragic accident later. This business now manages over 3000 acres of arable farming including a significant seed and ware potato enterprise.

As a director and latter chairman of the grower marketing group Anglian Produce (AP), Mr Bambridge was heavily involved with the merger between Greenvale and AP that became Greenvale AP. His vision of a more coordinated supply chain, working for the joint benefit of all resulted in his becoming non-executive

chairman of Greenvale AP in 2008.

He is also a Potato Council member and vice-chairman of Cambridge University Potato Growers’ Research Association.

Mr Stevenson continued: “In my view, what makes Tony such a worthy recipient of this award is his understanding of the entire potato industry supply chain and his huge efforts to make it more transparent and efficient. Tony is also a valuable member of my board and some of the Potato Council sub committees.”

Nominations for the 2012 award will open in May next year.

Farm Building Maintenance Health & safety when performing tasks is often overlooked. complicated subject which in the space available I will not be able to cover in depth.

The key point is that it is dangerous; too many farmers and their workers are killed and injured each year carrying out building maintenance.

Working at ground level if correctly planned can be a relatively safe option but as soon as work is required high on a wall or on the roof the risk of injury becomes serious.

Some of the dangers to consider are listed below: • Access: How are you going to safely access the work area? Unless the job is only going to take a few minutes, a ladder will not be good enough but if one is used it must be correctly footed and tied in. A pallet on the forks of a fork lift must not be used and most man baskets on fork lifts are not designed for people to exit them, for those that do consideration must be given as to how the basket is safely exited, without the risk of falling between the basket and the roof.

• Fragile roofs: Most farm buildings are fragile and so precautions must be taken to stop workers falling through the roof. Many think that walking the purlin line is OK; this is not the case the weakest part of the roof is beside the purlin, so if the worker stumbles and puts their foot down beside the purlin the roof can fail like a trap door. Collective protection such as nets are a necessity and it is a skilled job to put them in place correctly and safely.

Some believe that steel sheets are non-fragile,

this may not be the case, internal corrosion can mean that they are fragile and so all roofs should be treated as fragile until a competent person has confirmed otherwise. Many roof sheets can be damaged by walking on them so even if nets are employed under the roof, protection will be require to the area being accessed by the workers.

• Asbestos: Most farm buildings still have asbestos cement roofs and cladding and the regulations controlling work with asbestos are very tight, all workers must be properly trained in the dangers of asbestos and how they can safely work with it.

• Edge Protection: Farm roofs can be very slippery and so it is easy to slip and slide down the roof and so it is a necessity to have correctly installed edge protection at the eaves, below where the work is being carried out and if the work is within 2m of the verge then that will also require edge protection.

• Electricity: Are there electrical cables near to the work, if so they should be isolated.

• Falling Objects: steps must be taken to ensure that people and animals are stopped from accessing the area under the work.

Because of the above I recommend that a competent contractor is used; they may look

expensive but this is because they have to work safely.

Before considering carrying out such work, ask yourself 2 questions.

• How you would feel if you asked one of your workers to work on a roof and he fell, and you had to explain to his family that he was not coming home because you asked him to carry out a dangerous job, to save yourself a few ponds?

• How would your family manage if it was you that was disabled because you had undertaken a dangerous task yourself to save a few pounds?

Sense and Sustainability – why maintenance matters Many of our readers, by the very nature of their profession, live in beautiful, old buildings. Farmhouses and the outbuildings and barns that make up the farm often date back hundreds of years and have been passed on through the family over generations. SPAB have some words of advice for owners of old buildings following the annual ‘Maintenance Week’ which takes place each November. ustainability seems to be buzzword at the moment, but actually it’s something that for the last 130 years has been at the heart of everything that The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB) stands for.

On founding SPAB in 1877, William Morris spoke of the need to “stave off decay by daily care, to prop a perilous wall or mend a leaky roof.” He saw that the best way to preserve and conserve the integrity of an old building was to ensure that it was protected against the worst that time and the elements could throw at it.

Maintenance is important to buildings of all ages and types and is as vital today as it was in Morris’s time. Interestingly, his conservative approach to the repair and care of old buildings, was, and still is, the perfect expression of sustainability.

SPAB believes that an old building should be sensitively mended rather than restored.

When you repair rather than replace original features you continue the integrity of the building, allowing it to continue to do its job in the tried and tested way that the craftsman who originally built it understood.

An old property has stood the test of time. It is likely to have been built from local materials that are appropriate to the surrounding environment. But even sturdy old buildings need regular maintenance to ensure that they continue. Whatever its age, if a building is neglected it will decay and fail, possibly to the point where it may even have to be demolished and replaced!

Environmentally it makes sense to protect and conserve what’s already there rather build new. When new houses are built in place of older ones the process entails many lorry loads of new materials, potentially traveling great distances, being transported to the site. Some of these new materials may not even be appropriate to the region and, inadvertently, could even be contributing to the wider environmental problems affecting

the whole planet - the shipment of illegally logged timber for example.

Introducing apparently efficient modern features like double glazing to an old building can lead to problems – and leaves a marked carbon footprint over the landscape in terms of the materials and vehicles needed to create and transport these new additions.

Old buildings also contain ‘embedded’ or ‘embodied’ energy.

All the effort and materials it took to build them in the past will be wasted if they are allowed to rot – hardly a sustainable position in ‘The Age of Sustainability’.

Maintenance makes economic sense too. A well-cared for building will almost always retain maximum value and the cost of regular maintenance will more than repay itself whether or not you sell your property. A small regular investment in maintenance can limit the need for or the extent of expensive repairs. The annual cleaning of gutters and drains, for example, can be much cheaper and less inconvenient than having to cope with a serious outbreak of dry rot in the timbers of your roof caused by years of neglect.

Keep ground abutting the house to 150mm below the damp proofing course (dpc) or floor level if a dpc does not exist • Cut back growths such as ivy or other climbing plants on the exterior of your property. Along with masking faults, these types of growth can cause structural damage and dampness • Fix that dripping tap – both indoors and outdoors. A dripping external tap can cause damp if the water begins to penetrate the wall.

It has been estimated that a

constantly dripping tap wastes at least 5,500 litres of water a year – enough to fill a paddling pool every week for the whole summer.

Faulty bath and shower seals – problems that are simple to address - are another prime source of dampness and decay.

Hurley farmer (and co-creator) Chris Wathes tells us why this machine is so good.

hris Wathes is a farmer who knows what he wants – and if it's not available, he's not above making it.

Having modified other bits of kit to suit his particular needs, Chris is no stranger to the “A-

Team” school of thought. A self adapted silage pusher built from an old snow plough and other bits and bobs is testament to that. Having single cattle sheds rather than an “ally” meant he needed something unavailable to buy – and this attachment now meets his needs perfectly.

So when Chris decided that his Parmiter silage feeder wasn't exactly fitting the bill (even though he had tinkered with this too)...he got to thinking. What improvements could be made to meet his needs?

Enter Ray Green at Rekord Machinery, a friend and willing accomplice in the creation of what is now the Rekord CombiFeeder, a machine so good and built so well that Chris still uses the first machine that was made - even today!

Chris described his dilemma, “The Parmiter was doing the job but I felt it could have been done better. When it comes to silage feeders you've got ones that handle round bales, some square – other machines chop it and blow it...I didn't want that. I wanted a solid, reliable machine that would handle round or square bales and clamp silage with no chopping and no fuss”.

“I also wanted the machine to be able to handle the misshapen or collapsed bales at the bottom of the stack – not just the perfectly round ones from the top – the Combi-Feeder does it all”.

Chris offered to put a bale in and demonstrate and with that, jumped into the Tele (a Merlo

hydrostatic model) and shot off to grab a bale.

As if by design, it turned out to be a bit of a turkey once the netting came off – perfect for a demonstration of this machine's ability. Once loaded, Chris positioned his trusty Fiat ready for a feed run along the nearest shed.

“I want to show you the extension mechanism – if it grabs a bale and doesn't hold it, it sends it back down and tries again. You can feed into a trough/manger as well as onto the floor, dispense feed from the left or right or out of the back (courtesy of the separate frame) – it's ideal”.

The machine is so versatile that it will not only feed out silage but hay, straw, roots, meal and by products.

As far as maintenance goes, Chris just washes it down once a year and sprays it with waste oil.

The only attention that the machine has needed was when a pin came out of the main feed chain – a quick one to fix and a minor niggle after 12 years of service.

As far as construction goes, the machine is bulletproof and built like a tank from good quality steel. You could drive into the thing and not leave a scratch on it – which Chris admits he's done in the past, quite by accident of course.

Any way back for the wheat market?

Nick Tapp, Head of Agri-Business, Bidwells, discusses. t has been called a 'slow death market' by one grain trader.

I

Since the last peak in early September the trajectory has all been one way, only posting daily positives to prevent the decline getting ahead of itself, or in response to the very occasional good news on the macro front. Looking at the wheat fundamentals alone, it is difficult to understand why the fall has been so steady and restrained.

The Black Sea is pricing other exporters out of the North African market, with European and north American exports well behind recent seasons; harvests across the northern hemisphere have been good (the A14 corridor excepting); Russia and Ukraine recovered strongly; spot yields in Serbia broke records; global wheat stocks, never really under pressure, rebuilt with a vengeance.

However, the maize story was less good, and increasingly out of synch with wheat, trading at a premium to wheat for much of 2011, and still pretty much at parity. At these levels there has been a degree of substitution by users who have a choice, and some modest rebalancing between the crops. The key US maize harvest, the principal driver of global trade, was talked down through the growing season, but has delivered well.

Stocks still remain at historically low levels, and there is on-going concern about increasing global demand (and Chinese in particular) keeping ahead of production, and it is maize

uncertainty that has supported the wheat market since June.

Wider macro economic factors continue to be implicated in wheat price movements, with the European debt debacle and a general commodity sell off by the funds tending to be bearish, but still able to engender an occasional upward spike in response to good news. However, the fundamentals continue to kick in, and downward pressure reasserts itself.

Stores across Europe are full; LIFFE is net short; there is little to support any return to the buoyancy seen earlier in the year.

Farmers, on the other hand, remain remarkably confident. Those who sold 2011 early are sitting pretty, having locked in some good margins. Others are waiting for the market to rebound, and not just in the UK. Central European farmers who can fund stock holding are doing just that in what looks to be an increasingly desperate hope that prices will recover. A sample of growers in the south east of England asked to predict prices forward for November 2012 were almost unanimous in their positive outlook.

For the crop in the ground, with the exception of Scotland and a few places around the western Mediterranean, dry conditions are the norm from the Welsh Marches to the Carpathians. For most crops there is enough moisture to see crops through the winter, but soil moisture deficits will quickly become extreme come early summer, if we do not see some significant rain (or snow) in the next 12 weeks. Is that concern enough reason to hold on to wheat until June?

And what about selling 2012 and 2013 crops? Prices are almost flat from Jan '12 to Nov '13, with the larger declines in the nearby contracts. Perhaps these prices still warrant tucking some (more) sales away.

HGCA updates grain storage guide Companion publication also available online. ith wet grain being a particular issue for some growers this season, the HGCA has publishlished the third edition of its Grain Storage Guide.

The guide, which has been a key industry reference point since it was first published in 1999, has been updated as a result of a five-year Defra LINK project, led by Fera, with HGCA funding and industry support from millers, maltsters, AIC and the NFU. The third edition incorporates a basic HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point) approach to store management, reflecting the findings of the LINK project which confirmed best practice principles.

Dhan Bhandari, Research and Knowledge Transfer Manager HGCA, said: “This is an easy-to use guide that will enable growers to adopt a simple, risk-based approach to maintain grain quality.”

The HACCP control system is now common place in the food industry, guiding users to identify hazards and calculate risks at every stage of operations, then to assign each a risk score and specify corrective actions required in order to minimise the risk to a manageable level.

LAMMA Show continues to set growth records 2012 event set for even greater success with more exhibitors and more to see for visitors.

he ever-increasing popularity of the LAMMA Show amongst the farming community nationwide, has in the past few years led to a tremendous increase in both visitor and exhibitor numbers. For LAMMA 2012 approximately 750 exhibitors have booked stand space for the event which will take place on 18th & 19th January 2012, at the Newark Showground, on the Lincolnshire/Nottinghamshire border.

From the outset the primary aim of the LAMMA Show was to offer a low-cost shop window for small manufacturers to display their products. More than 30 years later, this is still the case and the success of this policy is evident from the large number of small companies, from all parts of the country, taking part. Combine this fact with the presence of all the major players in the farm machinery, equipment and services sectors, and it becomes evident why so many

The ever increasing popularity of the LAMMA Show indicates that it is now placed high on the list of favourite exhibition events for professionals in the agricultural and associated industries. Teagle unveils a trailed 4m folding ‘Vario’ New tine disc cultivator offers variable intesity tillage on the move. t LAMMA 2012 Teagle will be exhibiting for the first time in the UK a trailed 4m folding version of the successful Multidisc Vario. The Vario is a high speed combined disc and tine cultivator that offers the user the option of varying the intensity of tillage on the move.

The machine layout comprises a set of discs to initially cut up trash, followed by hydraulically retractable adjustable tines and then a second row of discs to incorporate trash and mix the soil. A LAMMA success story his year marks the 10th anniversary of the development of the Claydon direct drill, during which time the company has led the way in the development of strip tillage in the UK, which has resulted in a considerable saving in time and establishment cost.

LAMMA holds a special place in the development of the Claydon drill, as it was at LAMMA 2002 that Jeff Claydon first displayed his latest development, and rather like the show itself, the intervening decade has seen the Claydon drill go from strength-to-strength.

New Houle slurry tankers introduced Still the toughest on the market.

EA Farm Technologies has introduced new high capacity HOULE® slurry spreaders and injecting equipment on to the UK market. The two “Steerable Series Spreaders” in the EL44 range include the twin axle EL44-4D with a capacity of 14,350 litres or 16,150 litres, and the EL44-6D range of four tankers, with capacities from 19,750 litres to 25,100 litres. Both can be top filled in just a few minutes using a high capacity pump such as the GEA HOULE® Super Pump, or can be vacuum filled. While this is slower than top filling, the vacuum pump only vacuumises a small front section of the tank and once this section has been filled the discharge pump takes over to fill rest of the tank. This is far quicker than ‘standard’ vacuum systems.

The steel of the tank is 6.35mm or 1/4 inch thick, and not 3/8 inch like many competitor tanks, says GEA. The sides of the tank are also fully welded both inside and out, meaning there are no places for the manure to lodge and attack the steel.

should result in a life expectancy of 12 or more years for heavy contractor use and 17 or more years for a farmer.

A wide selection of spreading and injecting tools are available for fitting to the machines, and the discharge pump can be ordered with ‘Hard-Ox’ steel to cope with sand laden slurries.

Both tankers come with air brakes as standard, which are based on technology from the American fire truck industry. They also come with the GEA HOULE® patented power steering and hydraulic suspension system, which ensures the tanker’s turning angle is matched with the turning angle of the tractor as well as ensuring that the weight of the tanker is evenly distributed on all wheels if one wheel goes into a dip. Other tractors tend to distribute the weight to the tractor when this happens. It is the only

steering system that is CE approved. Road safety is further improved by the fitting of baffles inside the tank to stop ‘surging’ of the slurry in the event of sudden braking.

The specially chosen Galaxy 725/65 X26 tyres give a larger footprint than other tyres to reduce soil compaction and damage to vegetation, help prevent sideways slippage on sloping ground, and eliminate strain on spreader hubs, axles and the chassis.

Experience in the North American market has shown that these tyres last three times longer than tyres fitted to competitor machines.

It's snow joke thanks to Kubota tractor and groundcare Don’t let inclement weather stop you this year. s the weather worsens, the versatility of Kubota's RTV900, tractors and ride-on mowers can be enhanced with the addition of a snow blade or salt spreader.

Kubota Tractor and Groundcare offers SB1 and SB2 snow blades for the RTV900 allterrain utility vehicle, the B Series compact tractors and F Series professional outfront mower, whilst aftermarket blades are available for smaller ride-on mowers such as the GR2120. In addition, the B Series compact tractors can also be fitted with KG80 and MT80 salt spreaders.

Last winter saw much of the country grind to a halt as temperatures fell to -19C and some parts of the UK experienced up to 30 inches of snow. To help keep the roads open this winter, the Government has asked local authorities to grit the main arterial routes while appealing to farmers to use their tractors to

keep rural roads open. As a result, HM Revenues and Customs has confirmed that farmers can use red diesel in their tractors whilst helping to clear public roads.

When removing snow, farmers using agricultural tractors such as the Kubota M Series traditionally use their loaders; however, those with smaller machines such as the B Series compact tractors generally find that specialist snow blades are more effective.

Of course, snow clearance needn’t be confined to those who run tractors; the RTV900 can also be fitted with a snow blade.

Micron to unveil new band sprayer at LAMMA 2012 Three section inter-row sprayer is a result of extensive research and development consultation with customers. icron Group has revealed it will be launching its latest innovation Varidome S3 – a three section inter-row sprayer – at the 2012 LAMMA event. In addition, the company will use its stand 183 in Hall 1 to showcase its other agricultural and horticultural products including the single section Varidome S1, Enviromist range of shielded CDA (Controlled Droplet Application) spraying equipment, the highly acclaimed, unique non-drip WeedSwiper and the Herbi range of hand-held sprayers.

The new innovative Varidome S3 is a shielded, three section CDA band sprayer which has been specifically designed for drift free spraying of weeds between crops at low or medium volumes.

Offering improved spray accuracy, efficiency and minimised dose rates, Varidome S3 is capable of treating three beds at a time and is suitable for use in carrots, onions, leeks, parsnips, ornamental plants, tree nurseries and potentially maize and OSR. Varidome S3 can also be used as a full width band sprayer for efficient field scale operations.

atomisers that produce optimumsized spray droplets for maximum spraying efficiency or conventional pressure nozzles. Thanks to its versatile design, spray width is fully adjustable on each individual head enabling operators to treat desired inter-row and wheeling widths. Varidome S3 can spray inter-row widths from 100mm to 800mm and bed widths from 1.3m to 2m wide (up to a total width of 6 metres). The toolbar configuration can be easily changed to suit the type of crop and can be rear or front mounted. When not in use, hydraulic cylinders lock individual heads for safe transportation.

It features shielded spray heads which follow the contours of the ground to prevent spray drift outside the target areas and enable application selectivity by equipment design rather than by chemical. This means operators are able to use broad spectrum herbicides in situations where normally only a selective herbicide would have been suitable.

Following its successful launch at Cereals 2011, Varidome S1 - the single section unit for use in vegetables and other row-grown plants and crops - is also available and will too be on display at

LAMMA. The machine offers users the benefits and features of Varidome S3 and is ideal for smaller width applications.

Varidome S1 can spray beds up to 2m wide and delivers reduced chemical usage and increased target accuracy.

AXION 900 reaches new power level Marks entry into a completely new market sector. he introduction of the new AXION 900 range, with power outputs from 320hp up to 410hp, marks CLAAS’ entry into a completely new market sector.

The AXION 900 is a totally new design which rounds-off the CLAAS range of high horsepower tractors.

In designing the new AXION 900 range, the CLAAS design team has taken into account all aspects of the work the tractor will be expected to do, combined with expectations regarding running costs and the need to meet the latest emissions regulations, in order to achieve the CLAAS goal of making a significant contribution towards efficient, eco-friendly agriculture.

To enable this, CLAAS has established CLAAS Power Systems (CPS), which brings together experts from the different divisions within CLAAS to share information and ideas in

order to develop products that best meet customer expectations in terms of performance, reliability and running cost, but also regulatory and environmental requirements.

In order to meet the forthcoming Tier 4i emission regulations for engines of between 176 and 760hp, by not

products that fall within these emission requirements CPS take into account all practical aspects of the machine, such as application, transmission, hydraulics, power transmission, etc and from there seek to achieve an optimum match between all components.

One of the big advantages of the twin engine system on these two JAGUAR models was the ability if required to run on just one engine for road transport or in light crops in order to save fuel, and only engage the second engine when full power was required.

The new DYNAMIC POWER engine control system has been designed to take this benefit a stage further, by allowing a single engine to operate at 11 different power outputs, so enabling even greater efficiencies whilst still maintaining maximum output from the forage harvester.

Also when combined with the GPS steering, automatic spout control and cruise control systems that are also available for JAGUAR forage harvesters, this not only reduces that operational stress imposed on the operator, but ensures that the whole harvesting team can

maintain optimum output efficiency.

Instead of the twin engines previously used on these two models, the range topping JAGUAR 980 is now powered by a single MAN V12 engine whilst the JAGUAR 970 utilises a MAN V8, both of which achieve optimum engine load at 1800rpm.

Using DYNAMIC POWER, as the load on the engine varies, for instance when working in lighter crops, or in lower yielding parts of a field and on the road, the control system automatically recognises this and will alter the engine power output accordingly over 10 power steps.

On the JAGUAR 980, the power output ranges from 272hp up to the maximum of 884hp in 10 steps, whilst on the JAGUAR 970 the 10 steps are over a range from 272hp up to 775hp.

New HAWK goes Evo Ideal for farmers, smaller contractors and amenity use. he ever popular BOMFORD HAWK arm mower has been brought in line with the latest EVO design, which was initially introduced on the Falcon earlier this year.

The new HAWK EVO will be available in three reaches – 5.4m; 6.0m and 6.5m, plus there is the option of parallel geometry and 5.4m and 6.0m forward arm versions. Designed for use with tractors of 65hp and above and with a minimum weight of just 3000kg, the new Hawk Evo is ideal for farmers, smaller contractors and amenity use.

The most noticeable feature of the Hawk Evo is the stylish new rounded design of the hood. Whilst outwardly striking, this new rounded shape is designed to allow easier access by enabling the hood to open through 90°, providing unhindered access to the hydraulic components and simplifying removal of the oil filter.

For added security, the curved hood can now be locked in order to protect the valves and

filters. It also prevents access to the filler for the 207 litre hydraulic oil tank.

In redesigning the Hawk Evo, particular attention has also been paid to the panel-to-panel gaps and panel-to-frame tolerances. By ensuring that the gaps are kept as small as possible, this helps avoid the ingress of dust and debris, so keeping the filter and filler areas cleaner to help avoid the risk of contamination.

The new striking design includes distinctive rear decals and the use of LED rear lights in order to help draw drivers’ attention to the machine.

The Hawk Evo features an independent 60hp, 100 litres/minute hydraulic system, powered by twin gear-driven pumps, plus there is the option to upgrade to a more powerful 125l/m hydraulic system. The new Hawk range is oil cooled as standard when proportional controls are specified.

Both the standard and parallel arm version feature a gravity breakout system and a

power slew of 94° and 90° respectively, with the option of manual or hydraulic arm float and electronic headfloat. On the forward arm version, an additional arm brings the cutting head 800mm forwards, so that it is alongside the driving position.

All three versions of the Hawk Evo can be specified with Bomford Pro-Trim flail cutting heads with working widths up to 1.5m, or for thicker vegetation they are also suitable for use with the new ProSaw blade head, which is available in working widths from 1.6m up to 2.4m.

Depending on requirement, the Hawk Evo can be specified with either cable controls or the EPP3 or ICS electronic control systems. Using a joystick, EPP3 provides proportional control over two services, whilst ICS provides additional control over head angling, slewing and telescopic arm control on 6.5m reach models, plus it provides a digital display for hours worked and service codes.

In common with all Bomford reach arm mowers, the Hawk EVO is supplied ready-to-go, complete with hydraulic oil and a standard two-year warranty.

What it means for you... limate Climate change is the most serious environmental threat facing the world today and clean renewable energy sources like wind power are a significant part of the solution. Wind power is plentiful in many parts of the world and forty percent of all the wind energy in Europe blows over the UK. This can be harnessed safely to generate electricity, without producing any dangerous waste or unwanted by-products.

Wind energy, as part of a diverse renewable energy portfolio across the UK, can also make a valuable contribution to our national energy security and meet rising demand in a sustainable way.

Wind energy systems are among the most technologically advanced and cost-effective renewable electricity generating sources currently available.

Modern turbines are likely to be producing useful power for up to 85% of the year, and have a design lifespan at least 20 years.

The power produced by onshore wind farms is one of the cheapest forms of renewable energy available today, with the real potential for continuing technological advances to bring the costs down still further.

Wind energy can help meet national and international targets on reducing carbon dioxide emissions and is a vital component of a strategy to meet renewable energy targets. It

also increases the nation’s security of supply and reduces reliance on finite fossil fuels and imports.

Before committing to a project you need to determine the available wind resource on your site. This will determine the available power.

For maximum efficiency, turbines require a smooth flow of air over the rotor blades at a constant speed. Ideally a turbine should be sited on the top of a hill with a gentle south-westerly slope (the direction of the UK’s prevailing wind). Obstructions such as trees or buildings will cause turbulence in the wind flow.

The efficiency of a turbine increases dramatically with small increases in wind speed and turbulence increases the wear and tear and thus the maintenance requirements.

Commercial turbines are sited on tall towers to avoid turbulence that occurs lower down (wind shear) and take advantage of the higher wind speeds higher up, so it makes sense to consider siting your wind turbine as high as you can within your budget and local planning constraints.

Static wind turbines need explicit planning permission.

Discuss your plans with your local authority before committing to the project especially if the proposed site is on a listed building or in a conservation area, National Park or AONB.

Alternatively, utilise one of the numerous bespoke 'allin' services provided by the many companies within these pages.

Wind turbines are eligible for the UK government’s Feed-inTariffs which means you can earn money from the electricity generated by your turbine. You can also receive payments for the electricity you don't use and export to the local grid. To be eligible, the installer and wind turbine product must be certified under the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) . If your turbine is not connected to the local electricity grid (known as off grid ), unused electricity can be stored in a battery for use when there is no wind.

Of course, you should always seek advice before committing to a project but the rewards are there should you decide that wind, as a renewable energy source, is right for you.

Our turbines help Suffolk farmer rebuild fire-damaged farm to become fit for the future Windcrop chosen to get family back on track, installing three 5KW turbines.

e’ve been delighted to help and support Simon and Alison Brice, who own Poplar Hall Farm in Suffolk, by installing three turbines to help cut electricity costs and recoup some losses after the farm was devastated by fire a year ago.

A major blaze ripped through the farm in Occold, near Eye, in June last year after an electrical fault in the piggery shed’s wet feeding system. On what Simon describes as ‘one of the most awful days of their life’ it destroyed the building which

was the central hub of the farm and resulted in the death of nearly 300 pigs.

With stock and income down it has taken over a year to rebuild the farm back up to its full capacity of over 4,000 chickens and 3,000 pigs.

Simon said: “After the fire I was determined to rebuild the farm and looked into ways in which I could save some of the money we had lost and become more efficient and sustainable for the future. Having researched renewable energy

systems I decided to start with wind energy as this seemed to offer one of the quickest ways to make an immediate and noticeable impact.”

As a result, the farm’s free range chickens have welcomed three 15m high, 5kw wind turbines as neighbours.

“Although I haven’t yet had a bill through, my digital meter reader shows that the turbines have already cut my electricity costs by at least half,” said Simon. “I did have some initial concerns that the chickens may be frightened or spooked by them, which could affect the lay, but they don’t seem bothered at all and I’m still getting as many eggs as usual.”

John Moore, said: “We were saddened by Simon’s story but delighted to be able to play a part in rebuilding the farm to become more energy efficient.

Because we carry out all the organisation, installation and ongoing maintenance of the turbines, generating our own

return through feed-in-tariffs, we were also able to leave Simon free to continue running and rebuilding other areas of the farm.”

John added: “We’re also pleased to hear that we were proved right in our reassurance that the chickens wouldn’t be worried by their new neighbours!”

Simon’s focus on rebuilding the farm with energy conservation and carbon footprint in mind has been met with a positive reaction from neighbouring farmers.

“Several of my neighbours have commented on how good the turbines look, although most have also asked whether I’ve found them to be noisy” said Simon. “But they are only 100 metres from the farm house and I can honestly say that even on a really windy day the sound of the trees rustling and the buildings creaking is noisier than the turbines.”

ADAS launch new screening tool Environmental and agricultural consultancy ADAS is launching a sophisticated screening tool that allows for its renewable experts to quickly identify feasible development sites which have a higher chance of gaining planning permission.

For sites to have a higher chance of obtaining planning consent, farmers and landowners need to consider around 10 factors in their screening process. These include distance from residential areas, conservation zones, national parks, radar and telecommunications masts to identify whether sites could be suitable for development Jon Abbatt, Head of Environment at ADAS said: “It is very difficult to find suitable areas for wind farm developments and traditionally when sites have been submitted for planning, only around 50 per cent have been successful. We hope that the development of our new screening process will increase this figure and allow for suitable sites to be developed.

renewable energy plan and this tool will help us to select more suitable locations faster”.

ADAS will be launching the screening tool at the Farm Energy Event on 6 December at the East of England Showground in Peterborough.

Investment in small wind continues to increase Without a doubt - the time for investment is now. vance has seen a large increase in the take up of small wind across the country as more and more farmers and landowners are eager to reduce their carbon emissions and operate more sustainably.

As well as reducing CO2 emissions and generating low cost energy, there are long term returns from Feed-inTariffs (FiTs) when using MCS certified products.

By installing a small wind turbine such as the Evance R9000 on a site with wind speeds averaging 6 metres per second annually, the turbine will generate over 13,000kWh of energy. This is equivalent to energy cost savings of up to £1,700, depending on electricity consumption and assuming a rate of 13p per kWh. So with energy costs rising wind energy is a great benefit.

As well as the cost savings, R9000 owners can enjoy an income stream. As the Evance R9000 is MCS certified turbine it is eligible for FiT payments, which are currently set at 28p per kWh

generated. Therefore, using the above example a R9000 could bring in an income in excess of £3,600 per annum.

There are a number of configurations for a R9000 system which together with the specifics of the location determine the final cost of an installed system.

Pitfalls with purchasing your biogas generation equipment Do not underestimate the importance of generator selection and maintenance.

dina is the UK distributor for MWM generation equipment, and is one of, if not the leading supplier to UK biogas plants.

Although at the end of the biogas plant process, the importance of the generation equipment cannot be overestimated. Despite contributing significantly to overall plant cost it is the revenue provider, and must perform 24/7 for 10 to 15 years.

Points to consider are the generation efficiency, the installation, who will/can maintain the unit; who installs; the regulation compliance and capital and operating costs. Reliability and efficiency take precedence as a “cheap� option which has greater downtime rapidly reduces the return for the period.

Selection of generator, then the supplier and also the maintainer of the equipment all need careful consideration The value of the biogas produced is maximised by the generation equipments electrical conversion efficiency. A generator with an electrical conversion efficiency of 41% will produce TEN PERCENT more revenue than one with an electrical efficiency of 37%.

The electrical efficiency should be stated on a generator manufacturer data sheet for the particular engine and biogas composition. Generalisations can

be misleading. The biogas composition is significant because at lower methane concentrations in the biogas the efficiency will decrease.

Maintenance is the key to having a successful project. To keep the generator operating for over 90% of the time a preventative maintenance strategy is needed. Edina offers an Operation and Maintenance agreement where we take on the responsibility of keeping the generator operating. This is different to a service agreement where the maintainer will do all the maintenance to a schedule but does not take the risk of the unscheduled maintenance.

Although the any breakdown is repaired the ongoing operational risk is with the plant owner. Full Operation and Maintenance can only be made with a comprehensive UK based service organisation which is usually allied to the generation manufacturer organisation.

The generation unit is usually only about half the complete installation. Whether it is packaged in a container or installed directly within a building there is the ancillary requirement for pumps, radiators, heat exchanger, control panels, circuit breakers and G59 relays etc. The installation/containerisation

supplier should have documented knowledge of compliance with the UK CDM, ATEX/DSEAR and H&S requirements. In addition the installation must have the ongoing service in mind, not only with design but on the choice of ancillary equipment used.

Supplying equipment which will last just through the warranty period may reduce the capital cost but ongoing maintenance costs increase. Also availability of spare parts is key, generator parts are usually available rapidly but the ancillary equipment may not be, a week delivery for a pump seal could mean a week loss of revenue. Another factor is the telemetry equipment supplied. If the installer is not the service provider then it is likely that any

telemetry system supplied will not be compatible with the service provider. The service provider then usually has to retrofit an additional telemetry system at additional cost.

Edina undertakes turnkey installations and not only designs the installation but constructs the containerised packages within the UK. Hence all equipment is readily available. With service engineers located across the UK all Operation and Maintenance contracts give an 8000hour per year availability guarantee, with all scheduled and unscheduled maintenance undertaken in the remaining 870 hours, this will even include years when the major engine overhauls take place.

Weltec Biopower in UK: Biogas from organic waste Two new plants to be built by German company who have been installing UK AD since 2005.

he Vechta-based company has received two orders for the construction of biogas plants in the UK. Eco Sustainable Solutions Ltd., a recycling company headquartered in Dorset, South West England, has requested WELTEC to build a 500 kW plant that is to convert 15,000 t of liquid food leftovers a year to power. For this purpose, the company from Lower Saxony will set up a stainlesssteel fermenter with a capacity of

2,500 cubic metres, a storage tank (342 cubic metres), a digestate storage unit (7,078 cubic metres), and an upstream hygienisation unit.

An order for another 850 kW plant that also produces energy from waste comes from Northern Ireland: From early 2012 onwards, „Ballyrashane“, a dairy co-operative based in Londonderry County, will fill its 5,000 cubic metres fermenter with cattle manure, maize silage,

and dairy waste. There will be two digestate tanks with a capacity of 6,000 cubic metres each. The special features of the layout include a split of the CHP plant capacity: Of a total of 850 kW, 250 kW will be generated directly at the plant; the remaining 600 kW will be generated at a separate CHP plant in a creamery located just over a mile away, enabling direct use of the heat.

WELTEC BIOPOWER has been building plants in the UK since 2005. Meanwhile, it boasts a remarkable population of plants running on waste: Currently, 2.7 MW in England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland operate under the WELTEC label. In January 2010, a 500 kW biogas plant was commissioned in Gnossall, Staffordshire, in the West Midlands. Apart from pig manure and maize silage, this plant also uses food leftovers. The power supplies 1,000 households, and the operator uses the heat to heat the farm building and to dry

the digestate, which he spreads out over his agricultural areas.

In 2010, WELTEC had built a 500 kW biogas plant with unpacking, separation, and shredding facilities for „Fernbrook Bio“. The plant, which belongs to the Rothwell Lodge Farm in the East Midlands, converts 30,000 t of biowaste and cattle manure into electricity. Additionally, the pig manure and flotation fat of closeby farms are fed into the two 3,000 cubic metres fermenters in order to supply a total of 2,000 households.

In terms of biogas potential, the island is Europe‘s Number Two, after Germany. If all sources were used, two million households could be supplied via anaerobic digestion (AD). The problem-free dosing of solid biomass into a digester is the key to effective use of a biogas plant. However, in practice the solids contain a high percentage of foreign material such as stones, scrap metal or silage cover material. A conventional wet entry system without the separation of foreign material often causes significant problems in the feeding system itself or in the biogas plant components. The foreign materials disturb the smooth operation of the biogas plant and are responsible for high component wear.

The biogas specialist MTEnergie presents an ideal solution at Agritechnica 2011 with the innovative „MT-MixBox“ wet feeding system. In contrast

to the well-known systems, the MT-MixBox can handle the task of reliably separating the foreign materials without crushing before it feeds into the digestion line. The active separation is achieved by using a twochamber system and centrifugal forces. Afterwards the cleaned mixture of solids and substrates can be brought into the plant without any problems.

Since the foreign materials are not crushed, the separation is carried out with particularly low wear as well as low energy expenditure. This is a considerable advantage compared to conventional systems. Particularly the discharging pump of the wet feeding system is protected effectively against foreign materials and has a longer operating life than systems which feed a mixture of solids and substrate containing foreign materials. Also the subsequent systems of the biogas plants are

protected against increased wear thanks to the separation of the foreign materials.

Maintenance and wear costs for pumps or mixers can be thus reduced significantly.

Furthermore, the MT-MixBox offers all the known advantages of a wet feeding process. These include for example positive biological effects on the substrate degradation, a reduction of the floating and sediment layer, a reduced mixing requirement as well as more even gas production and a homogeneous gas composition.

Last but not least, the MT-MixBox allows flexible substrate logistics for the supply of several digesters.

Thanks to the compact design, the component requires only a little space in the biogas

plant. Because the MT-MixBox is installed directly at the discharging screw conveyor of the solid feeding system, further screw conveyors, i.e. for the vertical transport or support work, are not necessary. This has a positive impact on the investment costs and causes less wear and energy expenditure.

gritechnica 2011 marked the first anniversary of the launch of Case IH EfficientPower technology for the marque’s tractors and combines, now used in more than 75 different tractor models in four series, plus the complete range of AxialFlow combines. Now, three new tractors series – Maxxum, Farmall U and the Magnum CVX – all boast the EP sign, the logo for EfficientPower technology.

The EfficientPower system involves more than just innovative technology. It harnesses the achievements of Case IH development engineers in seeking to maximise productivity and efficiency by coordinating the driver’s operation of the tractor and the machine’s technical systems.

"New technologies have been introduced with EfficientPower that optimise the technical characteristics of the machine and improve the interface with the driver, with the objective of enhancing both cost-effectiveness and comfort," explains Silvain Blaise, Marketing Director at Case IH in Europe.

For the next step, which comes into effect from 2014 onwards, Case IH will use SCR technology and AdBlue throughout its range. Exhaust gas cleaning takes place outside of the engine itself, greatly reducing the proportion of particulates it contains.

"With the Case IH SCR system, the exhaust gas is not fed back into the engine, which would result in reducing the power output available to the user," Mr Blaise points out. "At the same time, our Stage 4B technology does not require regeneration of particulate filters, or special technologies to recycle cooled exhaust gas.

"There are three main advantages with our SCR technology: more power, much lower fuel consumption and enhanced reliability.

“By not recycling exhaust gas pollutants through the engine, we also achieve greater durability, increased reliability and extended maintenance intervals," says Mr Blaise.

"That’s why we are convinced that this is the best approach for all of our agricultural machines.

NFU Deputy President at home on the Ranger After using a quad or forklift to move feed around, the sheer versatility of the Ranger is obvious. eputy President of the NFU, Meurig Raymond MBE, farms 3000 acres in Pembrokeshire, in partnership with his twin brother and with the help of his eldest son, Paul.

The farm comprises 2000 acres of combinable crops, 285 acres of potatoes, 600 dairy cows with 300 followers and around 2,500 store lambs, fattened during winter.

“It’s an excellent piece of kit, I can’t speak highly enough of it,” In April 2011 the farm started trialling a Polaris Ranger 400, mainly for the livestock side, checking on the animals, rounding up, transporting feed and repairing fences. “The Ranger is in constant use,” says Meurig, “it’s highly reliable and much appreciated by the staff.”

The farm previously used a quad or fork lift to move feed around but find the Ranger much more versatile for transportation and with the added advantage (in moving across the fields) it’s so much lighter, causing minimum pressure and damage.

He became Vice President of the NFU in 2004 and Deputy President in 2006. He was awarded an MBE in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours in January 2005 for his services to agriculture.

The award was judged by members of the Midland Group of Motoring Writers, who were invited to nominate their favourite contender from a shortlist of four.

performance – 52.3mpg (combined) fuel economy and only 140g/km CO2 emissions – coupled with its practicality and versatility, edged out the competition.

“It does everything you need a car to do and you get a lot of car for the money. This is actually that rare beast, an SUV with luggage space,” commented the judges.

The awards presentation took place at a special event at the

House of Commons on Monday 14 November. New SUV goes global Following its world debut in Los Angeles, this new vehicle will head to Europe, where sales of compact sport utilities have grown 200 per cent since 2000. It will be revealed at the Geneva Motor Show in March for European customers as the all-new version of the Ford Kuga and will have unique powertrains and features. Chinese customers also will see the all-new Kuga next spring.

Volkswagen reveals future of the SUV with tokyo concept A new stage in engineering design. olkswagen is showcasing its concept of an SUV of the future at the Tokyo Motor Show this week, in the shape of the Cross Coupé. The all-wheel drive plug-in hybrid hints at how a crossover between a four-door coupé and an SUV could look. It also defines a new stage in Volkswagen engineering design, being the first model based on the company’s new ‘modular transverse matrix’ – or MQB – to be shown publicly.

At 4,345 mm, the concept car being shown in Tokyo is longer than a Golf and shorter than a Tiguan. The width of 1,868 mm and height of 1,523 mm also come exactly in between these two bestsellers, meaning that the Cross Coupé’s dimensions place it at the heart of the globally indemand A segment.

The concept car’s 2,630 mm wheelbase is very long in relation to its overall length (52 mm longer than the Golf and 26 mm longer than the Tiguan). The overhangs (855 mm at the front and 860 mm at the back) are correspondingly short. This gives the car a very

compact but dynamic appearance, which is emphasised by wide tracks widths of 1,585 mm (front) and 1,613 mm (rear). It’s not just coupé-like though: off-road, it possesses figures that almost fall into the range of classic SUVs. The front angle of approach, for example, is 24.2 degrees and at the rear 32.5 degrees. The Cross Coupé also features good off-road ground clearance.

The design of the car – penned by a team led by Volkswagen Group Chief Designer Walter de Silva and Brand Design Chief, Klaus Bischoff – features the characteristic horizontal lines of the Volkswagen ‘face’ at the front while linking to the future with a completely new light and grille treatment. The rear is dominated by steeply sloping angles and new distinctive light clusters which are combined with SUV-like chunky bumpers and twin tailpipes.

The four-seat Cross Coupé is powered by two electric motors (one front and one rear) which generate 40 kW / 180 Nm of

torque and 85 kW / 270 Nm respectively, and a TSI direct injection turbo petrol engine. With overall power of 265 PS, the Cross Coupé can accelerate to 62 mph in just seven seconds and on to a top speed of 125 mph. It can travel up to 40 km on purely electric power.

The all-wheel drive system with ‘electric drive shaft’ also represents an innovation for Volkswagen, with the rear axle being driven by the rear electric motor. In this situation power is supplied to the rear electric motor by the one at the front, which during this phase acts as a

generator powered by the TSI engine. This means that in the Cross Coupé, the flow of electrical energy thus replaces the conventional transfer of power by means of a drive shaft – which creates room in the central tunnel (which would usually house the drive shaft) to hold the lithium ion battery. The resulting low position of the battery and layout of the drive systems give the vehicle a very low centre of gravity and a balanced spread of axle loading, endowing the car with dynamic coupé-like handling qualities.
