Hutchinson County, April 2021
Terry and Kristie Leischner farm with their daughter, Jenaya, her husband, Matt Brengle, and their children, Brantley and Brooklyn. Together they represent the fifth, sixth and seventh generations of Leischners to farm in Milltown Township.
Matt had background with cattle, but had to learn crop farming by the seat of his pants when he and Jenaya moved from west river to Hutchinson County. Matt and Jenaya live on the home place now where they take the lead on calving and finishing the feeder cattle. After a career in social work, Jenaya is an educational professional now as the county’s 4-H youth program advisor.
Terry is still active farming and Kristie has taught young elementary age students at a local Hutterite Colony for about 30 years. Kristie is also in charge of booking the portion of Leischner’s herd which is processed for specific customers who want to buy a quarter, half or whole beef. Craig Winquist of Canton grew up on a dairy farm south of Alcester. Kari grew up in Lake Benton, Minn., where her parents raised purebred Herefords. “We showed Herefords all over. I pretty much had a halter in my hand from the time I could walk,” she said. Craig’s mom, Carla, said, “The first time we met Kari, she was cleaning out a livestock trailer, so we knew she was a keeper.”
Craig had a long career as an ag education teacher at Akron-Westfield; Nashville, Tenn.; and West Lyon. He recently changed careers, moving into the banking sector. The Winquists have a small farm west of Canton, purchased with the goal of teaching farm’s life lessons to their sons, Corbin, Conley and Kamden. The family grows aronia berries and soybeans, plus have a small cow-calf herd, sheep, chickens, and bees for honey.
Craig said, “Each year that goes by, we can see the progress the boys are making.” The boys often let their parents sleep when it’s time to check the ewes for lambs at 2 a.m.
