Lyon County, July 2021
Dylan and Kelsey McCarty and their children, Raelyn and Weston, appreciate living on the rolling hills of western Lyon County near Granite. Dylan hopes to grow his cow-calf herd. He backgrounds the calves and typically sells them at 750-850 pounds. He also grows corn and soybeans, alfalfa and grass hay. Kelsey is a native of Illinois and a NICU nurse at Avera in Sioux Falls. She enjoys the friendly atmosphere of northwest Iowa and southeast South Dakota.
Dylan said, “I definitely love the farm. I can’t ever foresee myself doing anything else. I’m just thankful to be able to do it. It’s very nice to be your own boss and have this lifestyle. There’s something different every day. I don’t need a lot more acres. Where we’re at now keeps me pretty busy. But I suppose if another neighbor asks, I’d have to say yes. So far, they’ve come to me and asked me if I wanted to farm their ground. It’s nice to not have to be searching out land. I’m definitely blessed that way.”
