The Schmidt family is not adverse to growing, but it’s not necessarily vital to their peace of mind. “There are operations out there that are aggressive and always ready to grow-growgrow-grow. We’ve always had the philosophy of, yes, we’d like to grow more corn to be able to have a full year’s feed for the cattle, but we’re also happy with what we’ve got,” said Andy. Russ wasn’t optimistic about getting much of crop at all in 2021 when there was such a prolonged dry period. “I was just hoping we’d get silage. I’m not usually a pessimist, but it didn’t look good. Then we got some timely rains and we had a very good crop.” Russ admitted they could have sold the corn for $5.50 or $5.75 per bushel, but joked, “We’re going to feed it to the cattle and see if we can get four bucks back.” A little more light-heartedness has become more important in their lives in recent years. “When you live where you work, you’re always looking out the window thinking ‘I could be doing this or that.’ But it’s just nice to get away. I love cattle, but sometimes you’ve got to have a little break,” said Russ.
