New Multicultural Celebration to be hosted on March 23 The City of Farmers Branch is proud to present Gateway to the Globe, a multicultural celebration that will promote the traditions and cultures of residents of Farmers Branch and the greater North Texas region. This new event has been carefully crafted with input from the Multicultural Task Force, which is dedicated to creating a platform for sharing cultural heritage through exceptional exhibits, foods and performances from representatives of diverse nationalities.

Gateway to the Globe will be hosted on Saturday, March 23 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Historical Park. The event will be free and open to the public and will feature a variety of cultural performances, a kids’ zone with hands-on activities, unique food and beverage offerings, an international marketplace and educational booths.

May 4 Election CANDIDATES FILE BY FEBRUARY 16 The positions of City Council District 3 and District 5 will be on the May 4 General Election ballot. Candidate packets will be available online and at the City Secretary’s Office beginning December 11, and candidates must file between January 17 and February 16.

The lobby of City Hall will be under construction for the next several months.

JOYA GRAND OPENING

Construction continues on the new state-of-the-art, glow-in-the-dark JOYA Playground at Oran Good Park. It will be the only playground of its kind in the nation. Project managers expect to announce a grand opening in mid to late January.

During Bulk Pickup Week, January 1-5, the Green Grabber will pick up bulk items such as furniture, large appliances, and other items that cannot be placed in a garbage bag.

BAKING BASICS 101 Monday, January 15 | 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.

Historical Park | $20 per scout; includes patch This hands-on workshop will introduce the principles of baking, including kitchen tools, measurements, food safety and nutrition, as handmade treats are prepared and enjoyed.

The workshop is recommended for Daisy to Junior Girl Scouts. Space is limited, and pre-registration is required.

Fight the Flu Virus

Your best defense against the seasonal flu virus is to get vaccinated every year. To help prevent the spread of germs, take the following everyday actions: • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

• Cover your coughs and sneezes.

• Wash your hands often with soap and water.

• Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.

• Clean and disinfect surfaces.

Remember: For the flu, the CDC recommends that people stay home for at least 24 hours after their fever is gone without fever-reducing medication, except to get medical care or other necessities. For more information about the flu, including prevention and treatment, visit cdc.gov/flu.

New Year’s DAy Closures On Monday, January 1, all City facilities will be closed, and garbage / recycling will not be collected, with the exception of bulk items picked up by the Green Grabber.

During this week, all residential garbage / recycling collection days will shift to the next day. For example, if your normal collection day is Monday, it will slide to Tuesday, and so on.

Mad Hatter Tea Tickets Mad Hatter Tea will be hosted on March 2, and tickets are now available for the following party sizes: $120 for a table of four, $150 for a table of five and $240 for a table of eight.

Space is limited, and tickets sell out quickly.

Fire Safety Reminder

For as much enjoyment as fireplaces and fire pits can bring, they can also create problems if the fire is not completely extinguished before disposal. Remember to always check ash for smoldering embers before disposal to prevent fires from starting in trash carts and bags.
