National Night Out
neighborhoods encouraged to register block parties Neighborhoods are encouraged to spend the evening outdoors, presenting a united front against residential crime during the Farmers Branch version of National Night Out, planned Tuesday night, October 4. Block parties and backyard barbecues will be staged all over the City with the goal of encouraging neighbors to get to know each other and breed the familiarity that promotes awareness. Anyone planning a National Night Out party is encouraged to call the Farmers Branch Police Department at 972.919.9304 to register the gathering and to have officials stop by.

The crown jewel of playgrounds
One of the guiding goals in the City’s Strategic Plan is to provide attractive, unique and connected spaces for community interaction. Based on this goal and under the direction of City Council, the Parks and Recreation department has developed a plan to bring a true one-of-akind signature playground to Farmers Branch - Joya. Translated as Jewel in Spanish, Joya will be the crown jewel of playgrounds in Farmers Branch. Using data collected from focus groups with the true “fun experts” - kids, the concept for Joya was developed. Joya will be an all-inclusive glow playground that, while fun in the daytime, will come alive at night with interactive features that glow, allowing for day and evening play. Joya will be located at the corner of Tom Field Road and Valley View Lane. Construction is expected to begin this fall, with an opening date in the late spring. The design and construction of the project is funded by a grant from the State of Texas Parks & Wildlife and the Federal American Rescue Plan Act.

Diá de los Muertos, The Day of the Dead is an intimate celebration of life and death. Join the Historical Park and the community as we welcome back and honor the souls of our deceased loved ones. The Old Church will be open for prayer, meditation, and remembrance with a beautiful community altar to pay respect and celebrate family and friends. Candles and flowers provided to place on the altar. Attendees are invited to bring duplicate photos or mementos to lay at the community altar to honor their loved ones; items will not be returned.

Haunts & Houses: Trick or Treating at the Historical Park
Bring your young and school-aged children to trick or treat and experience the Manske Library’s “Boo-Ville” area during this come and go event. Wear a costume and come to trick or treat at the Log Cabins, School House, Caboose and Queen Anne Victorian Cottage, and more! Characters will be on hand to distribute candy on a first-come, first-served basis, and to pose for pictures with your little ones.
The Bloomin’ Bluegrass Festival features two days of traditional and progressive bluegrass music along with Americana and country sounds. In addition to the acts on stage, one can also find impromptu jam sessions throughout the festival grounds. No festival in North Texas would be complete without a selection of mouthwatering food from local favorites, including Mex-Mex, corny dogs, roasted corn, cheeseburgers, hot dogs and more. Guests can also find a great selection of premium and local craft beers along with wines and frozen wineritas.

Tour the camelot landfill Have you ever wondered where all your trash goes? You’re probably imagining a stinky gross pile of trash. In reality, the Camelot Landfill is an impressivly large and clean operation and here is your chance to see it first hand. All you have to do is go to the above mentioned website and enter your home address to see a calendar view of the pick up days for your address. Residents can also sign up for text alerts so you’ll never miss a pick up day and will be notified of any service disruptions.

Farmers Branch Sustainability & Public Health will be hosting a household shredding event on Saturday, October 29 from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. at City Hall. Residents are encouraged to use this opportunity to responsibly and securely discard sensitive material free of binders, clips and magnets. Residents needing to discard magazines, newspaper and scrap paper are encouraged to recycle those items and not bring them to the shredding event which is meant for the destruction of sensitive materials. The shredding truck will be located in the parking lot of City Hall at 13000 William Dodson Pkwy. This event is free to any Farmers Branch resident. dead trees beware In August, the Neighborhood Services Department announced a plan to address dead trees throughout the City. Dead trees are more likely to fall, drop limbs, and attract termites and other pests than a living tree, and so they pose a significant hazard to people and property. We understand that removing a tree can be a timeconsuming and costly exercise for some property owners, so Code Enforcement Officers will be issuing courtesy letters before taking any official action. The courtesy letters will educate property owners on the law and explain what is required to come into compliance. The letters will also inform property owners that a formal inspection of their property will take place in about 30 days, giving owners ample time to remove their trees or collect quotes and schedule removal by a professional. Taking care of our trees and other vegetation ensures that Farmers Branch will forever be known as the City in a Park!
