As we prepared this fall issue, the Texas Hill Country was once again facing devastating floods, many affecting the same communities still recovering from catastrophic flooding last July. For those of us who call this area home, watching familiar rivers rise again was heartbreaking. These are not simply places on a map. They are the roads we travel, the businesses we visit, the churches we attend, and the communities where our friends and neighbors are raising their families. Seeing them endure another season of loss so soon felt especially difficult. But then came something just as powerful: neighbors showing up for their neighbors. First responders moved quickly, churches and businesses opened their doors, and volunteers delivered meals, supplies, and helping hands. Ranchers checked in on nearby properties. Families offered shelter to those who had been displaced. People gave what they could—sometimes money or supplies, and sometimes simply their time. Once again, the Hill Country reminded us that community is not simply where we live; it is how we care for one another. That same sense of responsibility runs through this edition of Texas Farm & Ranch. Rural life has always required people to pay attention—to the weather, the land, their animals, and one another. Often, the earliest warning sign that something is wrong is easily overlooked like an animal behaving differently or a pasture that is not growing as it should. My article, “Small Threats, Texas-Sized Consequences,” looks at two growing concerns for Texas agriculture: the New World screwworm and pasture mealybug. Neither threat arrives with much fanfare, yet both have the potential to create serious consequences for Texas producers. The article explores what ranchers and landowners should watch for, why early detection matters, and how a single observation can help protect an entire agricultural community. In many ways, that watchfulness reflects the larger spirit of rural Texas. We pay attention. We speak up. And when something threatens the people, livestock or land around us, we step forward. Whether facing floods, invasive pests, or the everyday uncertainties of agriculture, Texans know how to remain steady and stand together. Our challenges may change, but our response rarely does: we look after what has been entrusted to us, and we look after one another. I hope this issue informs you, encourages you, and makes you proud of the people who call rural Texas home.

VOLUME 121
By Lydia duPerier
As the New World screwworm reappears and the pasture mealybug spreads, Texas producers are proving that one of agriculture’s greatest defenses is still a watchful eye.
Dawn arrives quietly across the Texas Hill Country. Live oaks cast long shadows across limestone hills, while cattle drift toward a stock tank before the afternoon heat settles in. To anyone passing by, it looks timeless, but ranchers know better.
The greatest challenges facing Texas agriculture have never come from just one direction. Drought, wildfire, volatile markets and rising production costs continue to test producers across the state. But some of the most significant threats arrive quietly, unnoticed until the damage is already underway.
They know the land speaks in subtle ways—a patch of grass that greens a little slower than usual, a calf reluctant to leave the herd, Sometimes they ride in on the wings of a fly; other times they hide a wound that does not heal the way it should. Sometimes, those beneath a blade of grass. small changes are the first sign of a much larger problem.

In 2026, two insects reminded the agricultural community that protecting a ranch means more than managing cattle or praying for rain. One threatens livestock directly while the other threatens the forage those livestock depend upon. Together, they reveal how even the healthiest ranch can be vulnerable to problems measured in millimeters. A State Worth Watching Texas is home to more farms and ranches than any other state. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s 2022 Census of Agriculture counted 230,662 Texas farms—more than twice the number in any other state. Nowhere is that agricultural heritage more evident than in the Hill Country, where cow-calf operations, hay producers, horse properties and wildlife ranches all depend on healthy land and healthy livestock. Texas’ size, extensive livestock industry, and international border also make monitoring for invasive pests and animal diseases especially important. Long before satellites and drones became common tools, ranchers learned to recognize subtle changes in their pastures and livestock. That instinct remains one of agriculture’s strongest defenses today. Cattle are among the animals affected, but sheep, goats, horses, wildlife and pets The Enemy Texas Thought can also become hosts. Birds are affected Had Been Defeated less commonly, and human cases are rare, Few pests have shaped American ranching according to USDA APHIS. more than the New World screwworm. Unlike common blow flies that generally develop in dead tissue, female New World screwworm flies lay their eggs on wounds or natural openings of living, warmblooded animals. Even a wound as small as a tick bite can attract a female fly. According to the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, the eggs hatch in about 24 hours, and the larvae burrow into the wound. They then feed on living tissue, causing it to grow larger and deeper.

For much of the twentieth century, screwworm was an unavoidable part of ranch life across the southern United States. Producers routinely inspected livestock, treated infested wounds by hand, and endured substantial animal losses and production costs. Then agriculture achieved one of its most important pest-eradication victories.
review of the eradication program, female screwworm flies typically mate only once. When a wild female mated with a sterile male, she produced no viable offspring. Repeated releases eventually caused wild populations to collapse. According to the USDA National Agricultural Library, the United States was officially declared free of indigenous screwworm in 1966. The program later expanded through Mexico and Central America, moving the biological barrier that protected the United States progressively farther south.
For decades, many younger producers Using the Sterile Insect Technique, scientists knew the parasite only through stories told mass-produced screwworm flies, sterilized by older generations. But that all changed them, and released them across affected on June 3, 2026. areas. According to a peer-reviewed
The USDA confirmed New World screwworm larvae in the umbilical area of a threeweek-old calf in Zavala County. It was the first confirmed Texas detection associated with the pest’s recent northward spread through Central America and Mexico. Federal and state officials established an infested zone, imposed animalmovement controls, increased trapping and surveillance, and expanded sterile-fly releases. However, the first detection was not the last. As of July 20, the Texas Animal Health Commission reported confirmed cases on 31 premises in 15 Texas counties. Those figures were current at press time but may change as surveillance continues. Producers and veterinarians are being directed to consult the USDA’s detection dashboard and state animal-health updates for the latest information.
root development, and contribute to a condition known as pasture dieback. Early symptoms include yellowing, reddening or purpling leaves, stunted growth and the appearance of drought stress even after rainfall, according to AgriLife Extension. Severe infestations can cause pastures to thin, turn brown or die. Those symptoms can resemble drought stress, nutrient problems or other causes of pasture decline. One section of pasture greens up more slowly than expected. Another develops scattered patches of yellowing grass. By the time producers realize insects are involved, valuable grazing or hay production may already be compromised. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension entomologists confirmed the pasture mealybug in
Texas in 2025, marking the first recorded occurrence of the species in the United States. Although it was newly recorded, researchers suspect the insect may have been introduced before 2022. Its spread has been rapid. As of July 7, 2026, Texas A&M AgriLife reported that the pasture mealybug had been confirmed in 70 Texas counties. In Texas, it has been found damaging Bermudagrass, Bahia grass, Johnsongrass, sorghum-sudangrass, several bluestem species and St. Augustine grass. Its full host range and economic impact remain uncertain. Researchers are still working to determine how the insect spreads, which Texas forage grasses are most vulnerable, and which management practices can provide dependable control.
The resurgence serves as a reminder that biosecurity is never truly finished. An infestation identified, treated and reported quickly gives animal-health officials a better chance to prevent additional reproduction and spread. Every suspicious wound reported by a producer becomes part of a much larger effort to protect Texas livestock, wildlife and pets. A New Threat Beneath the Grass Not every insect announces itself with an open wound. The pasture mealybug, Heliococcus summervillei, works differently. According to the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, adult female pasture mealybugs measure roughly two to five millimeters, while the youngest nymphs are less than one millimeter long and may require magnification to see. The damaging immature stages may be found on grass blades, at the base of plants, in thatch, near roots, beneath the soil surface, or under dried cow patties. The nymphs feed on plant sap and inject saliva that is toxic to grasses. Their feeding can weaken plants, reduce FALL 2026

According to AgriLife Extension, there are currently no reliable, tested management strategies specifically for pasture mealybug in Texas. Available pasture insecticides have provided little or no effective control, and broad-spectrum insecticides may worsen infestations by killing the pest’s natural enemies.
essential not only to agriculture but also to the region’s broader rural economy.
Agriculture’s Quiet Front Line
Healthy pastures support cow-calf herds, horses, sheep and goats, provide hay, and help ranches remain productive during dry years. Native rangelands sustain wildlife alongside livestock, making healthy forage
Texas A&M AgriLife reported in July 2026 that the state’s pasture and forage resources underpin the state’s $15.5 billion cattle industry.
Researchers at Texas A&M AgriLife, the USDA, the Texas Animal Health Commission and diagnostic laboratories across the state depend on those observations.

HORSE CANYON RANCH 27,740± ACRES / WEST TEXAS / CULBERSON COUNTY
Within its 27,740± acres, the Horse Canyon Ranch in Culberson County showcases the diverse, rugged beauty of far West Texas. The low-fenced property is a recreational paradise that can be accessed from both I-10 and Hwy 90. The Lobo-Garren Ranch Road, a well-maintained county road, transects the property linking both major thoroughfares and good dirt ranch roads crisscross the ranch. While the Horse Canyon Ranch has plenty of the wide-open spaces that define the region, it is only 20 minutes from Van Horn, the county seat, and just over an hour to Marfa, one of Texas’ most beloved destinations. The ranch is nestled between the Jeff Davis Mountains and the Wiley Mountains. With its expansive views and desert climate, it is reminiscent of Arizona. Because the landscape includes both desert rangelands and craggy, but accessible mountains, the ranch is home to pronghorn antelope, blue quail and some Gambel’s quail as well as mule deer, aoudad sheep, free-ranging elk and the occasional mountain lion or black bear. For the past couple of years, the ranch has implemented a protein feeding program using approximately 22 feeders scattered across the property. Working with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, the ranch team participates in aerial wildlife surveys. Historically, used as a working ranch, the property has been rested from cattle grazing for the past few years. Horse Canyon Ranch is a recreational paradise with agricultural infrastructure including three sets of working pens. The ranch is divided into nine main pastures and three traps. The cattle operation could be easily reinstated as an additional income stream and range management tool. In good years, the carrying capacity is 300 to 350 head of mother cows. In arid areas, water is crucial. The ranch has five working wells, with a mixture of electric submersible and solar pumps, and two non-functional wells. Water distribution to meet the needs of wildlife and livestock has been an on-going effort. The ranch is home to an extensive network of piping, water troughs, storage tanks and wildlife guzzlers. The main headquarters includes a three-bedroom/two-bathroom ranch house with a full kitchen, living room and central heat and air, a barn, a storage barn and a tack room as well as one of the three sets of working pens. Horse Canyon Ranch offers a lifestyle as big as the West Texas sky. Here you can get away from it all and rediscover the peace that comes from elbow room and the grandeur of nature. Existing hunting and grazing leases create an income-producing opportunity for a new owner, if desired. To experience the diverse, accessible beauty of Horse Canyon Ranch for yourself, call Howard W. Hood, Broker, 830-739-3815. Listed for $785/acre.
