TETON SPRINGS RANCH

3,119± ACRES / KENDALL & KERR COUNTIES, TEXAS LAND MEN RANCH SALES

Summer slows us down. The days lengthen, and the agriculture never stops; it runs on the seasons.

As I write this for our summer issue, I think about how much farmers and ranchers shape our daily lives. In a world that feels more digital every day, it’s easy to forget where things start. We rarely stop to consider the people who make it all possible.

Agriculture is more than just an industry. It is a foundation. From small family farms to large ranches, this work brings stability that goes beyond the land. It supports communities and drives our economy. It holds together a way of life that has lasted for generations.

Life on a farm or ranch works differently. While much of the world runs on instant updates, deadlines, and constant noise, agriculture needs something else. Agriculture stays rooted in what’s real: land, water, weather, and care.

It takes patience, resilience, and a real understanding that not everything should be rushed. The unhurried and purposeful pace of agriculture reminds us why this industry is still so important. Which begs the question: who chooses to carry this forward?

Many people say younger generations are leaving agriculture for cities and new jobs. While that’s partly true, it’s not the whole story. There’s another side to it, quieter but just as meaningful.

Some people are choosing this life. They are taking on work that means long hours and uncertainty. It’s not a job you clock in and out of. It’s a commitment to the land, to animals, and to a lasting purpose. They are making this choice in a world that looks very different from the one they grew up in.

I thought about this often while working on this issue’s feature, The Age of Decision: Young Texans Choosing Ranch Life. It examines people who are at a crossroads, choosing a path that isn’t always easy but is deeply meaningful. Their stories aren’t about looking back; they’re about moving forward with intention.

Agriculture isn’t about staying the same. It adapts and changes, but does so carefully, without losing its core. The balance between tradition and progress is what continues to shape its future.

In this issue, that story is at the center, followed by opportunity. The ranches featured represent the next chapter. For some, they are an investment. For others, a calling. Either way, they remind us that this way of life is still here and still needed.

At its core, that’s our mission: to show how agriculture shapes our lives and why supporting those who work the land is so important.

Whether you live this life every day, are considering it, or simply admire it, I urge you to take action. Support those behind the work: reach out, get involved, ask questions, or share their stories. Your engagement isn’t just appreciated; it is essential to maintaining this way of life going.

Thank you for being an active part of this community and for supporting the future of agriculture.

YOUNG TEXANS CHOOSING RANCH LIFE

Choosing ranch life doesn’t happen overnight. It grows from early mornings, long days, and a deepening bond with the land. For some young Texans, agriculture is more than a family tradition—it’s a purposeful choice, made even when easier paths exist.

Across Texas, fewer young people are getting into farming and ranching, so most in the industry are close to retirement. For those who do choose this path, it’s rarely easy. High costs, new technology, and daily challenges require endurance and flexibility. Each person’s story helps shape the future of agriculture.

At Crawford Farms in Uvalde, Texas, work doesn’t follow a set schedule. The land decides what needs to be done, whether it’s urgent irrigation, fixing equipment, or tending crops. The pace is steady but unpredictable, and the work goes on all year with little time off.

For Brad Crawford, 35, this routine has always been part of his life, even as it changes with each season. Planting is central to everything and sets the stage for what follows.

“My day-to-day life is planting. That’s all I ever do is plant,” Crawford admitted.

Crawford’s routine started when he was young, shaping how he sees ranch life. The work is more than just one job: he manages water, fixes what breaks, and keeps everything running. Each season brings new tasks—summer is for corn and cotton, while winter brings other work to keep the land productive.

But work is just one part of the story. Things like weather, resources, and costs—often out of anyone’s control—can matter even more. For Crawford, the biggest challenge is clear: there’s not enough water in an unpredictable environment.

“Our biggest problem is water,” Crawford said. “I mean, just water, the lack of rain, and wells being dry.”

Because of uncertainty and rising costs, staying in agriculture requires a willingness to take risks, not just know-how. Fewer people are able or willing to accept that challenge. In Uvalde, this change is clear, as there are fewer young farmers.

“There are probably two other guys that I know of,” Crawford said, when asked about farmers his age nearby.

Most of the others are older, and many are close to retirement, leaving a gap that grows wider every year. The gap may look

THE HALE FAMILY’S CATTLE

different from place to place, but it is always present.

This widening gap is visible at Allerkamp Farms in Comfort, Texas. Here, there are fewer young producers, but a strong sense of continuity remains. Generational ties and the ability to adapt help shape the farm.

The land has changed over time. It once used to grow many crops, then it became a dairy, and later, switched to hay as needs and markets changed. Each change was a response to what the land and market required.

For Barrett Allerkamp, 27, keeping the farm going is a choice. He works with his sister Brittni Cross, 30, and his twin Baeley Allerkamp as a family to keep things running.

“Our family kind of has always farmed—our great-grandpa, grandpa, dad—they’ve all farmed,” Barrett said. “It’s just something we wanted to keep going.”

Their sense of responsibility shows in their routine. Early in the year, they spray, fertilize, and then wait for rain. This begins their season.

“We just fertilized last week, so now we’re just kind of waiting on rain,” Barrett said. “Like the kickoff of the year.”

Then the pace picks up. Once production starts, they focus on delivering hay to buyers all over Texas.

“Most days, we have hay deliveries,” Barrett explained. “We’ll deliver hay wherever we have to go that day.”

But for young people today, running a farm is harder than just doing the daily work. For most of their peers, farming isn’t a real option anymore.

“I would say out of all our peers, there are no farmers,” Brittni said.

Brittni said it’s now tough for anyone without a farming background to get started. High costs for land, equipment, and supplies make it almost impossible without a head start.

“You almost have to grow up in it to continue it,” Brittni said.

Farms work differently now. Technology makes things more efficient, so fewer people can do more, and there’s less need for extra help.

“We can turn a two or three-man job into a one-man job with the technology now,” Barrett said.

Growth looks different these days. Farms that used to be limited by location can now reach buyers outside their area thanks to new ways to connect.

THE HALE FAMILY

“THERE’S AN ACCOMPLISHMENT TO PLANTING THE SEED AND WATCHING IT HARVEST”

“We now sell hay all over the state, just because of social media,” Brittni said.

Even with all these changes, what keeps young people on the farm isn’t just efficiency or how big the farm is. It’s the connection they feel to the land and to each other.

“There’s an accomplishment to planting the seed and watching it harvest,” Barrett said. “It’s definitely a life worth living.”

Sometimes, choosing agriculture isn’t about staying—it’s about coming back. Some people leave, then return, adding another layer to how young Texans connect with ranching.

Derek Hale, 44, took a different path. Unlike many young ranchers, he built his connection to agriculture early and kept coming back to it, even after working in other jobs.

“IT’S DEFINITELY A LIFE WORTH LIVING”

“I’ve always been in and around ranching,” said Hale. “I just kind of always come back.”

That’s a different kind of commitment—not just staying, but always returning. Over the years, Hale worked in construction, trucking, and oil, but he always came back to ranching.

“Ranch jobs are kind of hard, but for the most part, my life has always been ranching.”

Now, he manages cattle in South Texas and raises replacement heifers. The job takes patience, consistency, and a long-term view. Success comes from careful work and paying attention to details.

“I like being able to get these heifers to a point where your cattle are the top-selling cattle—that’s pretty rewarding,” Hale said.

Besides the work itself, ranching is appealing because of its setting—the unique pace and open space.

“I like being out in the country, the peace and quiet,” Hale said. “My office is sitting on my porch with nothing around.”

That feeling of belonging keeps drawing him back, even after time away. He hopes his children will feel the same pull.

“I truly feel like my kids, they’re going to get out, and they will circle back around to it,” Hale said.

For Hale, ranching isn’t a single big decision. It’s a steady part of his life, even as things change.

“It was either a rancher or a pilot… that’s kind of always been my lifelong dream.”

In the end, the future of Texas agriculture is shaped by choices made both early and later in life, by those who stay and those who return. Each person’s decision adds to the story and helps build what comes next.

People who choose this life do it out of dedication and a sense of connection, not for promises or guarantees. The work is steady and demanding, and its value comes from choosing and sticking with it for its own sake.
