PROPERTY INDEX
Before sunrise, pickup headlights flash across the pasture while horses paw at the cold morning ground. Neighbors, family members, and friends gather quietly, preparing for the long day ahead.
By midmorning, crews across the American West move in practiced rhythm. Calves are roped, vaccinated, and marked with brands that, in many cases, have existed for generations.
Each spring, branding season returns, not only as a practical necessity of ranching, but as one of agriculture’s most enduring traditions.
Across much of the West, branding remains a defining part of the ranching year. It is shaped by weather, livestock schedules, and local tradition. More than anything, it is kept alive through generations of family and community labor.
Modern cattle branding in the American West traces back to Spanish ranching traditions introduced to the Southwest centuries ago. Over time, those systems evolved into formal brand registries still used today. In many states, brands remain legally recognized forms of livestock identification.
For ranching families, though, a brand often carries meaning far beyond ownership.
For Colorado rancher Joette Schalla, ranching was never something she chose later in life. It was simply the world she was raised in.
“I was born and raised in southeastern Colorado on a cattle ranch,” Schalla said. “My folks ranched as long as I’ve been alive, so I was immersed in it from the beginning.”
That connection shaped the way her family viewed branding itself. Brands were never treated as just paperwork or livestock identification.
“When we were children, they bought us each a brand that they called ours,” she explained. “When we graduated high school, they actually signed the title of the brand over to each of us as a graduation present.”
Today, Schalla runs cattle across several ranch properties in southeastern Colorado. Like many ranchers, her spring calendar revolves around the short window of when calves are ready to be worked.
Branding season varies by region, climate, and calving schedules, but across much of the Plains, the busiest stretch falls during the late spring.
“For me, we usually start at the end of April helping people who calf earlier, and then my brandings are usually mid-May to the end of May, depending on which property I’m at and which set of cows,” Schalla said. “But the majority of branding season is in the month of May.”
The schedule depends on far more than convenience. Ranchers work around calf age, pasture conditions, vaccinations, and unpredictable spring weather.
Calves are typically branded while they are still small enough to safely handle. During the same process, crews often vaccinate, tag, and castrate calves for herd health and management.
Weather, though, can quickly change plans.
“The weather plays a big role,” Schalla said. “We’ve had a few brandings over the years get canceled because of weather.”
In southeastern Colorado’s dry climate, rainouts are less common than they are in wetter regions. Moisture still creates challenges during branding, however.
“You can’t brand wet cattle because it’ll scorch them,” Schalla explained. “It basically steams them when you’re branding them, so we don’t do that.”
For many ranches, branding day is just as much about the people as it is about the cattle.
Across the West, ranching communities still rely heavily on shared labor. Neighbors, relatives, and friends move from ranch to ranch throughout the spring, helping each other work cattle during the busiest part of the season.
Schalla says those relationships remain central to the branding process at her family’s ranch.
“With our brandings, we typically invite family, friends, and neighbors,” she said. “Neighbors that you trade with help a great deal.”
For her community, working together carries meaning beyond just the operation itself.
“It means quite a bit to us when we’re all doing the family events together,” Schalla said.
For them, the workday begins early, following a rhythm shaped by repetition and experience.
“We’ll ride out on horseback at 7 a.m.,” Schalla said. “Our family does everything in a more traditional, older style on horseback.” Some ranches now use hydraulic calf tables, alley systems, fourwheelers, and portable handling equipment. Others still prefer horseback methods centered on roping and manual handling.
For Schalla, those traditional practices remain an important part of ranch culture.
“My dad has always been a very big advocate of horsemanship and roping,” she said. “He instilled that in us, and we really enjoy it.”
For her family, the work is about much more than efficiency.
“It’s an art, a passion, and it’s an efficient way to do it,” Schalla said.
At the same time, she recognizes that branding styles vary widely between operations.
“There are some people who gather them on four-wheelers and put them across the calf table down an alley, then tip them over and brand them,” she said. “There’s nothing wrong with that. It’s efficient, and you get it done.”
By afternoon, crews may have spent hours in the dust, smoke, and spring heat. But the day rarely ends when the cattle work is finished.
Families gather around folding tables, coolers are opened, and large meals are shared among everyone who spent the morning working cattle together.
“Then we go have a big lunch, and everybody who was there helping gets to sit down and eat together,” Schalla said.
For Schalla, those moments are what give branding season its lasting meaning.

“It’s really enjoyable because you get to socialize a little bit and have fun,” she said. “It’s usually beef.”
And by the end of the day, everyone smells like smoke, dust, leather, and cattle.
Despite advances in livestock technology, branding still serves an important role across the West. Electronic identification systems have become increasingly common, but brands remain permanent, visible, and difficult to alter.
In states like Colorado, branding also remains closely tied to livestock law and ownership protection. A brand has to be registered with the State Brand Board and is considered a “livestock’s return address.”
“In Colorado, we have very strict brand laws, and branding is a very important thing,” Schalla said.
For ranchers, branding remains both practical and protective.
“Branding is marking your territory, protecting your investment, protecting your animal,” Schalla said.
For many ranchers, branding season endures because it connects people to a way of life that has remained remarkably consistent throughout generations.
For Schalla, branding means far more than just livestock management alone.
“It’s a fun thing, a networking and socializing thing, a community thing, but most importantly, it’s to protect your investment and your herd,” she said.
Branding season may not be the most visible part of ranching to the outside world, but within ranching communities, it remains one of the most defining aspects.
For many families, it is one of the few times each year when multiple generations work side by side in the same pasture. Children learn alongside parents and grandparents. Neighbors show up for other neighbors. Traditions continue not only through ceremony, but through repetition.
On spring mornings across the West, crews still gather as they have for generations. Horses shift in the dust. Smoke rises from the branding fire. A calf is brought forward.
And with the brief press of iron to hide, another mark is made— one that carries not only ownership, but the continuing story of the land, the livestock, and the people behind them.

ld Sundance Ranch is a high-quality, Wyoming cattle and hunting ranch near Sundance, built for serious cow/calf production with strong grass, abundant water, and functional improvements. The property offers excellent hunting for elk, mule deer, whitetail deer, pronghorn, turkey, waterfowl, and upland birds, combining dependable cattle performance with consistent big game opportunity.
Old Sundance Ranch is first and foremost a proven cattle operation. The ranch is rated to support approximately 1,250 cow/ calf pairs year-round, backed by a combination of native range and productive hay ground along the creek bottoms. These meadows have historically produced quality forage, supporting both winter feed and overall carrying capacity. The ranch is well-fenced and cross-fenced, with a layout that allows cattle to be moved, rotated, and managed efficiently. An extensive internal road system provides reliable access across the property, making day-to-day operations straightforward at this level.
Water is one of the strongest attributes of the ranch and a key reason for its performance. The property is very well watered, with a combination of live-water creeks, reservoirs, large mitigation ponds, springs, and developed water systems. Several creeks provide yearround flow, while others extend moisture through different seasons. In addition, wells and pipeline systems distribute water across the ranch, ensuring consistent availability for livestock in all areas. This level of water development supports both production and overall grazing efficiency.
The ranch stretches from timbered ridges and draws on the eastern end into open native grass country to the west. This transition creates a highly usable landscape, with pine-covered ridges, protected bottoms, and broad grazing country. The ground is set up to be worked efficiently, with natural protection, consistent forage, and access throughout, allowing the ranch to be operated without compromise.
While the ranch stands on its cattle operation alone, the hunting is equally compelling. The combination of timber, open country, and abundant water creates habitat that consistently holds and supports wildlife throughout the year. The ranch supports a resident herd of elk, with additional migratory elk moving through during the fall and winter, providing consistent opportunities at mature, quality bulls. Mule deer

and whitetail deer are both well-established across the ranch, with the mix of cover, feed, and water producing solid populations and the potential for large, mature bucks. Pronghorn are spread across the open grass country in strong numbers, taking advantage of the visibility and forage that the western portion of the ranch provides. Merriam’s turkeys are present in high densities throughout the ranch, particularly along the timbered ridges and creek bottoms, offering consistent hunting opportunity. The ranch’s extensive water—creeks, ponds, and reservoirs—draws significant numbers of waterfowl, especially in the early season, creating another layer of hunting value.
In addition to big game, upland birds are present on the ranch, including sharptailed grouse, found across the native grasslands and transitional areas. The diversity of terrain and the availability of water allow multiple species to utilize the same areas, and it is common to encounter elk, deer, antelope, and turkeys in close proximity. Overall, the ranch offers a consistent hunting experience, with the habitat and water necessary to support both quality animals and strong populations year after year.
Improvements across Old Sundance Ranch are centered on supporting a large-scale cattle operation and are built with function and efficiency in mind. The working facilities are well maintained and designed to allow for efficient gathering and handling of livestock, with their placement and the ranch’s internal road system providing easy access and minimizing time and labor when moving
cattle across the property. Fencing and cross-fencing are in place and support effective livestock management and rotation. The headquarters area includes multiple residences and supporting outbuildings that accommodate ranch operations and personnel, along with barns, shops, and other livestock-related structures that provide the infrastructure necessary to operate at this level with durability and ease of use.
The ranch is located in a strong part of northeastern Wyoming, offering both access and proximity to key amenities. Sundance and Moorcroft provide local services, while Gillette offers a full range of commercial, medical, and regional amenities within a reasonable drive. Keyhole Reservoir is nearby and is a well-known destination for fishing, boating, and additional outdoor use. Air access is available via Gillette-Campbell County Airport (36± miles), Rapid City Regional Airport (78± miles), and Hulett Municipal Airport (25± miles). Access to the ranch is straightforward via county roads and nearby interstate connections, allowing for ease of travel without giving up the setting. Presented by Dax Hayden, 303-619-6774

205± ACRES / WYOMING / TETON COUNTY

Tucked into the heart of Wyoming’s storied valley, the Historic Chapman Ranch is a 205-acre legacy property offering an authentic western experience. Located just minutes from the town of Wilson and bordered by public lands, the ranch unfolds beneath sweeping mountain vistas, including unobscured views of the iconic Sleeping Indian peak. With no conservation easements in place, this rare offering preserves the full breadth of opportunity for its next steward. Generations of western character are woven into the land and its improvements: a substantial main residence, an original hand-hewn Bircher barn with hay shed, a classic bunkhouse, and a four-car garage built for serious gear and ranch operations. Senior irrigation rights and a live creek coursing through the property sustain the land year-round, while the surrounding terrain invites riding, hiking, hunting, snowmobiling, and back country exploration in every season. The barn itself is a true piece of Jackson Hole history. Built nearly a century ago, it is one of only few Bircher barns still standing today. Wildlife is abundant including trophy elk, mule deer, moose, and bear, making it a coveted destination for sportsmen. Jackson Hole Mountain Resort is just a short drive away, delivering world-class skiing and year-round recreation to complement the ranch’s quieter rhythms. Adding to the property’s exceptional appeal is its proximity to the town of Jackson Hole, which feels both authentically western and unmistakably sophisticated. The town is best known as a gateway to extraordinary natural beauty and recreation—Grand Teton National Park sits just north of town, and Yellowstone National Park is roughly an hour beyond that, placing two of America’s most iconic landscapes within easy reach of the ranch. Whether held as a singular western retreat or thoughtfully developed into as many as five estate homesites, the Historic Chapman Ranch represents a once-ina-generation opportunity to own a piece of Wyoming’s enduring heritage. JEWEL OF STAR VALLEY
561± ACRES / WYOMING / LINCOLN COUNTY

Tucked into Wyoming’s Star Valley, sits a ranch that locals have quietly called the Jewel of Star Valley for years. It’s known these days as the JnS Ranch—561 acres of working land with the Wyoming and Salt River Ranges rising on either side, and nearly two miles of the Salt River running right through it. It’s the kind of place where the old cowboy traditions are still very much alive, but the fences are solid, the irrigation runs from your phone, and the barn is in beautiful shape. For outdoorsmen, this place is hard to beat. There are twenty-one fishing holes mapped out along the river, with brown trout and native cutthroat. Five natural springs keep the water cold and the fish happy year-round. The river is also home to ducks, sandhill cranes, and even white pelicans. For horse enthusiasts, the setup speaks for itself. The arena was built with a sixto-eight-inch sand base, which keeps horses sound whether you’re cutting or roping. There’s an electric remote-controlled chute, an outside ring designed to keep steers moving the way they should, and a beautifully constructed barn with its own tack room. Down by the corrals, a recently rebuilt bridge sits on steel I-beams and concrete piers—built to outlast. On the farming side, JnS is a real working ranch. Close to 200 acres are in irrigated production, growing barley and high-protein Garrison foxtail grass. Five Reinke pivots run on GPS and cell service, so you can manage the whole irrigation system from your phone. A 440-power substation and transformer were brought in to handle the load, and the water rights—held through the Baker and New Rico ditches—are locked in for the long haul. Maybe the rarest piece of all: this ranch comes with a team that already knows it inside and out. The current owner has maintained a partnership with a deeply trusted caretaker, whose institutional knowledge of the land is virtually irreplaceable. The new owner has the chance to keep that partnership going, with agricultural work, repairs, and day-to-day operations already in capable hands. While the ranch feels private and remote, Jackson Hole is less than an hour up the road. Skiing, good restaurants, galleries, and the gateways to Grand Teton and Yellowstone are all within easy reach, yet still far enough off to feel like an escape. It’s a rare thing to find a piece of the West that has been this well cared for. The work has been done. The relationships are in place. It’s ready for whoever comes next to call it home.
