Slovakia,
the young and multicolored heart of Europe. Slovakia is proud of its rich folklore and folk traditions. Each region, city, and municipality has a unique character and folklore – costumes, music, songs, architecture, customs, traditions, dances and dialects. Folklore festivals organised all around Slovakia serve to present the folk customs of individual regions. Slovakia is replete with gothic churches, medieval towns, majestic mountains and looming castles along bucolic rural landscapes.
Unbelievable Mountains High Tatras are the smallest alps of the world and yet its rich, diverse and unique alpine nature makes tourists, hikers, skiers, climbers, scientists, photographers and artists always coming back. Tatras give you a different experience for every visit. See it to believe it!
Stones of History and Fantasy Some as eerie ruins and others as fully restored museum pieces, castles, chataeaux and manors are an inseparable part of Slovakia’s landscape. Never are you further than an easy day trip from a castle worth seeing.
Magical Underground Spaces 12 absolutely unique caves are open to public accross Slovakia. Massive stalagmite and ice formations, purest tarns and darkest holes, beautiful domes and magical paths, anyone from cavers - adventurers to families with little children will be fascinated.
A Real Paradise Slovak Paradise, an unusually precious piece of land, has its name by right. This little national park is full of gorges, ravines, waterfalls, cliffs and caves, connected by adventurous-looking ladders and bridges. A tour as quick as 3 hours can make a lifetime impression.
20+ Thermal SPAs across Slovakia Slovakia is rich in healing thermal springs and mineral water sources. The town of Piestany is best known for its medicinal thermal water and curative mud. There’s nothing better after a good ski or hiking day than to put your body into a healing hot pool.
TYPICAL
Slovak food & drinks
There is no real “Slovak cuisine”, that would be known and used all around the world, like the Chinese or Italian. However, there are meals that you would encounter more often in Slovakia than elsewhere in the world.
Slovak food is hearty, typical of a country with strong rural roots. It isheavy on meat (especially pork), potatoes, dumplings, thick sauces and cheeses. If you’re looking for vegetables – there’s always cabbage, often in the form of sauerkraut. Salads are not traditional. Lunch is traditionally the largest meal of the day, with dinner on the lighter side. The most popular halušky is traditional bryndzové
halušky (sheep cheese gnocchi).
Sheep cheese gives a unique flavour to the meal by itself, but it is even more tasty with small pieces of bacon greaves and chives or dill. Usually served with a glass of sour milk called žinčica.
Žinčica is a traditional Slovak product from sheep milk. The best
kind is called Urda, it is denser than normal salty or sour žinčica. Especially in the summer it is a nice refreshing drink.
Kofola is soft drink similar to Coca-Cola or Pepsi. It has been pro-
duced in Czech Republic and Slovakia since 1960s. Kofola is one of the most favorite soft drinks in Slovakia. The main ingredient of Kofola is Kofo syrup that consists of 14 natural ingredients (extracts from cherry, apple, currant, etc.), caramel and sugar. It contains less sugar than Coca-Cola or Pepsi and a bit more caffeine.
Traditional Slovak Spirits Borovicka is an alcoholic spirit, the Slovak national drink. It belongs
to a group of fruit spirits; it has the refreshing effects with strong support for metabolism. It has a typical taste and aroma of juniper.
Slivovica is a spirit made from ripe plums by fermentation, distilla-
tion and treatment of water. Slivovica is a classic noble spirit, which is produced by complex procedure with different results. It has a strong fruity aroma and taste with a bouquet of pits.
Slovak Beers Šariš Brewery is the largest brewery in Slovakia located in the east-
ern part of the country, in Veľký Šariš near the city Prešov. Šaris is a premium beer made from light malt. It is a highly hopped beer which gives it a bitter, aromatic taste, and also allows better digestibility.
Zlatý Bažant (Golden Pheasant) is produced in a brewery in Hur-
banovo. Light beer Zlatý Bažant is a Pilsner type light lager, characterized by gentle hop aroma and moderate bitterness. Because of its full flavor, Zlatý Bažant belongs to the most popular beer on the market.
Bratislava
Placed on the borders with Hungary and Austria, Bratislava was always a multicultural city. The first written note about the city comes from the year 907. Since the end of 13th century, Bratislava became a royal city and since 1563, it was the place where coronations of Hungarian kings were held. Bratislava was mainly before but also nowadays a city where people could have spoken three languages – Slovak, Hungarian and German. The population reaches a bit above 400 thousand. On Sundays, you can meet lots of Slovaks travelling across the country from homes to work or study there. It is the heart of the strongest economical region of the country, often in love and hate relationship with the rest of the republic because it concentrates a big amount of job possibilities on the edge of our land. One famous joke is rumoured all the time: Where are all the people from Bratislava over the weekend? In Koťice (the se-cond biggest city located in the east).
But the only way how to get to know it is the only one: by yourself! You have to climb up to the castle which reminds a chair placed upside down, visit the old city, try halušky – the most traditional food of Slovakia – in one of the restaurants and take a walk on the promenade passing by the river Dunaj. Don´t forget to hop on a bus 39 over the accademic year in the morning if you can manage – it is the most crowded bus in the whole country as it connects our biggest dormitories with the main faculties and universities. Visit the old castle Devín, taste wines on vineyards out of the city in autumn. Experience on your own the rush which is sprinkled in the city and why Bratislava is often so gossiped.
Feel welcome in our country!
