Kiverco provides a third waste system to Haulaway Ltd
Welcome to our December Newsletter 2021 has been an excellent year for Kiverco despite all the challenges presented by Covid, cost increases, and supply issues. Our order book is healthier than it has ever been which is not only great for ensuring the continued success of the business but also for our community as we have many excellent job opportunities for local people. But let’s focus on what we have achieved in 2021. Employment – We have increased our employee numbers in many of our departments including welding, fitting, installation, design engineering, technical sales, costing analysis, and in our sales team. We have recruited a nice blend of experience and people who are just starting out in their careers. Each new team member has brought added value to Kiverco. We welcome all our new people and look forward to helping them and our existing staff continue to grow and prosper. Kiverco Kudos – in our last newsletter I commented on a new initiative to recognise employee excellence. Our Kudos programme has been a fantastic success with more and more people recognised for the excellent work and ‘above and beyond’ effort made to help others. Our 2021 winners at the end of September were Andrius Mockus and Andrew Lyttle – these 2 guys represent the ethos of Kiverco – decent hard-working people doing the right thing!! New Product Development – Without a doubt, one of the most exciting and successful product launches we have had in many years was our Ks range of waste plants. These systems were introduced to reduce the install time for traditional static systems and also to help companies with limited space to buy a small compact system to process their waste. We received lots of interest worldwide, including coverage by the World Economic Forum highlighting the significance of the Kiverco plant to tackle waste issues globally. Market Development – The UK has and continues to be our main market but we have witnessed growth in export markets despite the challenges with travelling overseas. There has been very strong interest in Kiverco solutions from Australia, Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and South America, and we are confident that these markets will provide tremendous opportunities for years to come. Indeed the Kiverco name is so well respected that we have been invited to be a guest speaker at the World Expo 2020 in Dubai to showcase the best in Engineering. Acknowledgment – In our last newsletter in July I acknowledged the resilience and can-do attitude of the people that I work with every day at Kiverco I would like to reconfirm that acknowledgment as we look forward to a well-deserved break at Christmas. The entire team works so hard every day to provide the very best products, systems, and service to our customers worldwide and I want to thank each of you sincerely for making Kiverco great. You have dealt with every challenge with a positive mindset and allowed Kiverco to maintain its position at the forefront in the provision of waste processing solutions worldwide.

We chose to work with Kiverco again because they are market leaders and visionaries in the waste industry. Their designs and build quality are excellent, and the support and level of customer service is exemplary. Our previous Kiverco plants have worked very well for us, providing reliable and consistent throughput, high levels of output purity, and helping us greatly reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill. Steve Walton, Manager at Haulaway Ltd Kiverco has designed and installed a new static solution for Haulaway Ltd for their new facility in Polegate, East Sussex. The new waste processing system will be used to process and separate different types of plastic and is the third plant that the Company has purchased from Kiverco. The new machine will be capable of processing up to 25tph and will enable the separation of various plastic types and grades to a high level of purity. Established in 1991, Haulaway Ltd is a family-run recycling and waste management company based in East Sussex. The company operates two licensed sites, including a waste transfer station and a recycling distribution facility.
“
We have worked with Haulaway for many years, and we are once again very grateful for their recent business. They are a fantastic company and were a real pleasure to work with on this latest project. Steve and the Haulaway team are committed to diverting 100% of their incoming waste from landfill, creating a healthy and cleaner environment for everyone. JP Devlin, Sales Manager at Kiverco
I would like to wish you and your families a very happy and safe Christmas. Let’s build on our success of 2021 and make 2022 Kiverco’s year!!

“
We chose Kiverco to deliver our new plant as they have an exceptional reputation for quality and reliability. Our old plant had become unreliable and was not sustainable. Kiverco is the leading C&D plant provider in the UK, and we wanted to invest in the very best of waste separation plants to ensure higher levels of purity and greater throughput for our business to grow. Sustainability is very important to the Smith family, we’re very aware of the strains on our environment, and we see our new asset as an investment for generations to come.
“
The business is rapidly gaining market share in waste management and recycling sector and is currently exploring the future of biomass energy. To continue to improve their C&D waste recovery facility and remain competitive, they have recently invested in a new Kiverco C&D static plant to future-proof their business.
“
Smith’s (Gloucester) Ltd had carried out extensive research over the past few years for a waste processing plant that would increase their throughput tonnages and achieve high levels of purity in their recyclables. Smith’s is one of the largest construction and waste management companies in the South West, so equipment reliability and backup were crucial to the decision-making. They required a plant that would be capable of processing a huge quantity of C&D waste and we were able to sit down with them and design a plant that would meet all of their needs. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the Smith family and their management team for choosing Kiverco to deliver their new plant and we look forward to supporting them in any way we can. Marcus McAlinden, Sales Manager at Kiverco
New state-of-the-art Kiverco waste plant for Excel Waste Management We are delighted to have completed our plant installation for Excel Waste Management based in Rainham, Essex. The primary deliverable objective was to increase throughput rates, providing capacity for further growth and diverting up to 97% of the incoming waste from landfill. JP Devlin, Sales Manager (UK and Ireland) for Kiverco, highlighted the significance of this latest investment in the South East:
“
The South East is such an important region for Kiverco and the waste industry. More waste is produced here than anywhere else in the UK, so we are very pleased to help process most of the waste generated in the region. We are delighted to be working with Nathan and the team at Excel Waste Management Ltd to produce a new waste separation system that aligns with their business growth. We would like to thank Nathan for placing his order and confidence with Kiverco.” We are thrilled to be collaborating with Excel Waste Management and to be part of such an exciting and fast-growing business venture.
“
For nearly 40 years, Smith’s (Gloucester) Ltd has run a successful family business and become one of the largest companies in the whole of Gloucestershire. Operated by two generations of the Smith family, the company offers a wide range of services to the construction industry.

Our People
At Kiverco, we like to recognise our employees’ extra-curricular achievements. Gavin Corr, one of our welders, competed at the Home International DTL and British Open clay pigeon shooting competition on the 17th-18th of September this year. He was part of a team that represented Ireland at the competition, which took place at Fauxdegla shooting ground. Gavin has been shooting from a young age. He regularly competes all over Ireland throughout the year to qualify for these championships. At this event, Gavin won the High Gun of Ireland on the British Open day, winning the Gold Star for himself. Gavin went on to win the shoot-off for the class AA, where he won the Badge.
Our Project Costing Analyst, Ciara McCann took part in the Belfast half marathon to support local charities including MACP, Diabetes Ireland, and Northern Ireland Kidney Patients’ Association.

Island Waste invest in plant upgrade to improve Sustainability in Guernsey Island Waste is committed to diverting Guernsey’s waste from landfill to recover recyclables. The company diverts over 12,000 tonnes of rubbish annually from landfill to recovery or re-use. The new static Kiverco waste plant will offer the company the opportunity to diversify and add new waste streams to continuously improve on the percentage of waste being recovered with the aim of Zero waste to landfill. The new plant will cater for 0-300mm pre-shredded waste materials and produce up to 15 tph of either RDF or SRF waste.
“
We wanted to diversify our waste stream and chose to consult with Kiverco who we have worked with previously. We were delighted with the service and support that Kiverco had provided, and we were confident that they had the expertise, innovative design, and engineering capability to cater for our bespoke needs. Our primary focus was to develop our existing plant so that it was capable of producing both RDF and SRF product. Doing so meant that we could turn general waste into a fuel that can be used in Energy from Waste facilities to generate heat and power, rather than sending the waste to landfill. We are delighted with what the plant can now process and recover, and it will make a real difference to the local environment here in Guernsey.
“
The Kiverco team is very proud of our two employees and wishes them the best of luck in future events. 8
Steve Murphy, Director at Island Waste
“
We are delighted that Steve and his team have returned to Kiverco to deliver another static waste plant solution for Island Waste. It’s fantastic to see a customer doing so well with their main waste streams that they are willing to invest in diversifying as the business grows. On an island that is only 30.12 square miles, Island waste is making waves in the waste management industry, striving for a cleaner, more sustainable island for future generations. At Kiverco we aim to raise the bar of recycling. We are focused on new innovations, better products, and a faster return on investment for the customer. Every plant we install sets a new standard for the global waste management market. We are always excited to work with like-minded companies who want to help improve the world we live in.
“
Kiverco has continued with our employee recognition scheme set up last year where we acknowledge employees who have gone above and beyond their responsibilities to offer support to a colleague, improve processes or offer new ideas to improve the business. This quarter our Kiverco Kudos awards go to Andrew Lyttle, Sales Executive, and Andrius Mockus, sprayer. Both lads received Kiverco Kudos nominations from their fellow employees for outstanding service to Kiverco. Congratulations to our employees for their excellent achievements.

Cop 26 - UN climate change World leaders headed to Glasgow in November for the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) at the Scottish Event Campus (SEC) in Glasgow. The climate talks brought together heads of state, climate experts, and campaigners to agree on coordinated action to tackle climate change. World leaders agreed to a series of pledges culminating in an agreement to strengthen emissions-cutting targets for 2030 by the end of next year. The majority of developed countries agreed to phase out their use of coal by 2030s, with poorer countries committing to the 2040s. Negotiators agreed to “phase down” the use of unabated coal and inefficient fossil fuel subsidies and stop public finance to overseas fossil fuels by the end of 2022, diverting the cash into clean energy instead. More than 40 world leaders - including the US, India, Australia, Turkey, the EU, and China - have agreed on a UK-led plan to speed up affordable and clean technology worldwide by 2030.
The first five goals have been dubbed the “Glasgow breakthroughs” and cover more than 50% of global emissions. An objective of limiting global warming to 1.5c was also set. UK Chancellor Rishi Sunak also said Britain will become the first country to force all financial institutions and listed companies in the UK to publish plans on how they will transition to net-zero from 2023. Other pledges discussed included action on deforestation, lowering the carbon emissions caused by farming, transport, and wildlife conservation. Although disappointingly recycling was not focused on in great detail, the reduction in methane confirms the importance of reducing landfill, where methane is produced in high quantities. As the world focuses on combating deforestation, recycling wood will become more important and RDF may be used as an alternative source of fuel for heat and power generation.
Kiverco represents UK at World Expo 2020 For over 170 years’ World Expos have shaped and driven change to inspire innovation, which has shaped the world that we live in today. Expo 2020 Dubai has been described as the ‘World’s Greatest Show of Human Brilliance and Achievement’, with the core theme ‘Connecting Minds. Creating the Future’ through sustainability, mobility, and opportunity. The Expo will take visitors on a journey highlighting how international organisations and civil society are already working to address the global changes of our time. This event is truly an international one with 192 countries being represented in country pavilions. This cultural and educational event will bring Innovation and world-
class expertise to the forefront, exploring unique shared global talent. The event provides an unrivalled platform to showcase UK talent, creativity, and innovation to the world. Kiverco is delighted to have been asked by the UK Government to participate as a guest speaker at Expo 2020. The primary role for Kiverco will be to represent the UK at the event by showcasing the best of Engineering. Senior Technical Sales Engineer, Gareth Hawthorne was chosen by Kiverco to represent the company at the prestigious event, which is ongoing until March 2022. Gareth will present and discuss how innovation plays a key role in Kiverco’s efforts to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill sites around the world.
The company has been selected as a VIP speaker because of its unique position in the global waste recycling industry and for the level of innovation brought into every waste processing solution. Gareth Hawthorne stated “This will be a fantastic opportunity for Kiverco to highlight the company’s capability with millions of visitors expected from 192 participating nations. We are extremely proud and humbled to be asked to take part in such a special event”.
Commenting on his experience at the World Expo this year, Gabriel O’Keefe, Export Sales Manager, stated, “In terms of highlights, the Water Feature in the Jubilee Zone was certainly impressive, while it was a real treat to experience the sensory feast that is the Al Wasi Plaza light and sound show in the evening. The scale and ambition of some of the exhibitions are breathtaking, with the very latest in video technology creating a virtual world that truly recreates reality. There is plenty of thought-provoking content and entertainment, particularly in the realm of sustainability. I look forward to having another opportunity to delve deeper when we visit in January as speakers on the UK stand.” 10

In recent years, automation including air and robotic separation has played a leading role within waste handling and processing to increase efficiencies, reduce the dependence on labour, and create cleaner recyclable waste products. The drive towards a ‘zero-waste’ society may be slower than many would like, but it is gathering pace with more and more awareness creating more noise about the need for better waste management. With growing demands placed on the industry, companies are investing in new technology to help achieve better results for themselves, the waste industry, local communities, and the nation as a whole. Labour shortages are also making companies think more about investing in technology and have indeed led to some already taking this decision. Earlier this year, Kiverco received several multi-million-pound orders from leading waste management companies in the UK, including Excel Waste Management and Holywell Ltd. These companies chose to invest in larger semiautomated waste plants that would increase throughput, improve performance, provide better outputs and ultimately divert more waste than ever before away from landfill. Advanced air separation technology is becoming more popular as it effectively separates heavy waste such as concrete and brick from lighter waste such as card, paper, and plastic. This first stage separation makes it much easier to further separate this lighter waste into specific waste products either by hand or using Optical Sorting technology. Cameras, scanners, and data accurately identify the chosen waste product and use powerful air jets to remove these products from all other waste. Highly effective and extremely accurate, optical sorters are becoming more commonplace in non - C&D waste sorting but are also appearing in some C&D sorting facilities.
Con Gallagher, Global Sales Manager at Kiverco Robotic separation is becoming more advanced and is starting to appear on some sites in the UK. The heavier pieces of waste are more difficult to pick although claw robots are available and have improved. The fast pick robots are more popular though and are mainly used as a quality pick alternative to humans. Despite the appearance of robots recently, they are much less popular than optical sorting which provides a faster separation process at present. This may change in the near future though!
“
Kiverco balances and optimises the relationship between the world’s most advanced automated recycling technology, with the world’s most robust recycling plant, in ways that no one else can. Blending the most powerful and effective automated recycling technology with recycling plant infrastructure that has been world famous, for almost 30 years. Their higher sustainable performance output, more uptime and a longer useful life is considered by some to be the holy grail of recycling plant design and manufacturing. The robustness of yesterday and the automated recycling power of tomorrow, inside a single recycling plant. This is all made possible in our world because Kiverco has been over-specifying at the recycling plant design stage since 1994, thus creating a perfect platform with which to now merge even the newest technologies in the automated recycling space.

We have been supplying the waste sector in the UK for almost 30 years and have seen certain trends evolve during that time. The market is demanding better separation with guaranteed results and is challenged by the serious lack of labour to manually sort waste. The technology is available, and we are constantly innovating to provide our customers with the latest best-inclass solutions. Our solutions are highly effective and genuinely game-changing, revolutionising the industry which will ensure our customers are achieving an optimum return on investment and futureproofing their business for many years to come.

The charity works with grassroots organisations that aim to make a difference to young lives, directly supporting families who often have nowhere else to go. This Christmas we are supporting the charity by providing gifts for children to ensure disadvantaged children have a gift to open on Christmas morning. Mary’s Meals - is a global movement. Their mission is to enable people to offer their money, goods, skills, time, or prayer, and through this involvement, provide the most effective help to those suffering the effects of extreme poverty in the world’s poorest communities. The charity’s vision is that every child receives one daily meal in their place of education and that all those who have more than they need, share with those who lack even the most basic things. Kiverco employees have very kindly donated clothing, shoes, toiletries, school stationery, and nonperishable foods to help some of the poorest nations in the world. These people have been hit harder than ever over the past year due to the extra strains that the Covid-19 pandemic has placed on them. 14
