The importance of knowing your family medical history (Metro) When visiting a physician for the first time, patients may notice an extensive section on family history on one of the requisite forms they fill out before meeting the doctor.

Though it can be hard to remember family members’ conditions, doctors have good reason to ask about their patients’ family’s medical histories.

Family medical histories can be vital to one’s own health care. The National Center for Biotechnology Information states that family history might be one of the strongest influences on a person’s risk for developing cancer, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and more. While you cannot modify your genetic makeup, knowing your family’s medical history can help you take the

steps necessary to protect yourself.

Family history reports can serve as warning signs for illnesses. These clues can help doctors prescribe certain screening tests at earlier ages to catch potential diseases when they are most treatable. For example, the U.S. National Library of Medicine says that healthcare professionals may recommend more frequent screenings (such as mammography or colonoscopy) and screening at an earlier age for people at an increased risk of certain cancers. Doctors may recommend biannual checkups to stay apprised of any changes in health that may signal a risk.

A thorough health care professional will record your family medical history and ask you to

update it routinely in an effort to ensure you get the best, most effective care possible. You can help the process by having the information needed at the ready.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggests the following.

• Talk to family. Make a list of close family members and discuss any conditions or issues they might have had and at what ages.

• Learn about chronic diseases. Speak to your relatives about chronic diseases like diabetes or high blood pressure, being sure to ask how severe such issues were and if any required hospitalization.

• Plot your ancestry. Learn about your ancestry and if any medical issues are more com-

mon among people who share that ancestry.

• Record everything you learn. Keep the information where it can be easily accessed

(Metro) Seniors are often targeted by criminals. Though many criminals target seniors from afar via telephone or internet scams, criminals seek to enter seniors’ homes. The Bureau of Justice Statistics offers that, between 2003 and 2013, the ratio of property crime to violent crime was higher for the elderly and persons between the ages of 50 and 64 than it was for younger persons between the ages of 25 and 49.

Home security is important for people of all ages, but especially so for seniors and aging individuals living alone. By following certain safety tips and developing a home security plan, seniors can feel safer at home.

• Lock windows and doors.

It may seem like common sense, but failure to repeatedly lock

windows and doors can, and often does, give burglars easy entry into the home.

• Think about a smart doorbell. Technology now enables doorbells to provide a video feed to a person’s smartphone or tablet over WiFi. This allows residents to see who is at the door and speak to this person without having to open the door. Some products like Ring¨ will even register motion activity and record short videos from outside of the house.

• Don’t share or leave keys. Avoid leaving keys under a mat or in a flower pot. Others may be watching your actions and gain access to your home while you are away.

• Ask for ID. When service people or other individuals come to the door, verify their credentials by asking to see some iden-

tification.

• Get a home security system. The best protection against burglars is a home security alarm, states HomeSecurityResource.org. Such an alarm often deters burglars from breaking in.

• Install a lockable mailbox.

Locked mailboxes restrict access to sensitive information, such as bank account numbers, sent in the mail. Make sure retirement checks or other payments are deposited directly into bank accounts instead of having them sent by check.

• Use home automation.

Home automation, or a ‘smart home,’ can be utilized to turn on lights, set the thermostat, lock doors, and much more.

• Adopt a dog. Dogs can be an asset to seniors. Dogs provide companionship and can bark or alert seniors if someone is around or inside of the home.

Home security is serious business for seniors who are vulnerable to criminals.

Learn how to sleep like a child again (Metro) Many adults lament that even if they were solid sleepers in their younger years, by the age of 50, their quality of sleep has unraveled. Some cling to the wisdom that people simply do not need as much sleep as they get older. Even though that is partly true, sufficient sleep is still a vital component of a healthy life.

The National Sleep Foundation recently updated its sleep recommendations per age group to include categories ‘may be appropriate’ and ‘not recommended.’ This includes a range of hours that may be adequate for certain adults. Adults between the ages of 26 and 65 are advised to get seven to nine hours of sleep per evening. However, six hours or 10 hours also may be acceptable. People over the age of 65 need roughly seven to eight hours of sleep each night, though between five and six hours also may be fine. Gen-

erally speaking, anything under five hours is not recommended based on data reviewed by sleep experts.

Many older adults do not get enough sleep due to insomnia, states Jack Gardner, MD, a neurologist certified in sleep medicine. They’re concerned about health issues, may have sleep apnea, can experience pain or frequent urination, or may be taking medication that impedes sleep. Dr. Leila KheirandishGozal, director of clinical sleep research at the University of Chicago, says that, over time, insufficient sleep can impact metabolism, mood, memory, and heart function.

Various strategies can help people get more sleep and enjoy better sleep quality.

• Create a luxury bed environment. Splurge on the largest mattress you can afford and one that is comfortable for both parties (if married/coupled).

A roomy bed routinely invites sleep. If you have a restless partner, try two separate beds pushed against each other.

• Consider white noise. The sounds of the house or outdoors may be keeping you up. Many people find that the gentle hum of a fan or a white-noise machine with a calming sound effect makes it easier for them to dose off than complete quiet. It can also block out extraneous noises.

• Keep electronics out of the bedroom. It can be challenging to disconnect from electronics, but it is essential to falling asleep.

Even a back-lit text coming through in the wee hours can be enough illumination to disrupt sleep.

• See your doctor. If medications or illnesses are keeping you up, a change in regimen may provide the relief you need.

Older adults can learn the steps to sleeping more soundly and easily.

(Metro) Gray hair is a natural side effect of aging. The rate at which hair will turn to gray differs based on genetics and other factors. Some people may go gray seemingly overnight, while others may gray at the temples first before the rest of their hair gradually changes color.

Aging women often wonder if they should cover up their gray hair or embrace the silver. Going gray is no longer something that has women running to their stylists at the sight of the first gray strand. Some actually opt for silver even before their own gray sets in. According to a 2017 survey of hair trends by L’Oréal Professional, 28 percent of women embraced or considered opting for silver hair. The trend has con-

tinued to gain steam. Celebrities like Jamie Lee Curtis and Helen Mirren were some of the first to embrace their grays. Younger celebrities like Kendall Jenner, Pink and Lady Gaga have opted for silver tresses to make a statement.

But there are still many women who prefer to transition gradually or avoid the harsh chemicals in some hair products.

The National Cancer Institute states that more than 5,000 different chemicals are used in hair dye products, some of which are reported to be carcinogenic in animals. There are many natural ingredients that can add tint to hair to make gray less visible.

Coffee, for example, can cover grays and add dimension to

dark tresses. Chamomile tea is recommended for blonds to add natural highlights and perhaps camouflage their grays. Calendula, marigold, rosehips, and hibiscus can deepen red shades or add some subtle red highlights.

Henna also is a popular natural method to add a red-orange color to hair. Creating highlights to offset gray hair can work as well.

Spraying lemon juice on hair and sitting in the sun can produce lightening effects.

Many women are seeking natural options to look their best.

Embracing grays or creating subtle tints with natural ingredients can help women feel confident and beautiful.

Safe dating (Metro) For seniors, being alone can escalate feelings of isolation. As men and women age, their social circles may begin to shrink. The health resource Aging Care says 43 percent of seniors have a persistent sense of loneliness. For many, dating is helping them find renewed companionship, self-confidence and vigor. Despite the rush that one may feel when beginning a

new relationship, it is important to put safety first. One of the key considerations is disease prevention. Statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that, between 2000 and 2008, there was a 45 percent increase in reported sexually transmitted diseases in Americans over the age of 40. Online dating may make seniors vulnerable to STDs. Furthermore,

many STDs go unrecognized and thusly untreated in the senior community because they’re simply not expected. Education can help keep seniors safe. Doctors can inquire about sexual activity as they would with other age groups. Seniors themselves should always practice protected intimacy and get refresher courses on ‘safe sex’ education.

How to prepare your family when an aging loved one is moving in

(Metro) No man or woman, regardless of his or her age, wants to consider that a day may come when they need to rely on loved ones to help them perform everyday activities. But every day tens of millions of people serve as unpaid caregivers for their aging friends or family members.

A 2015 survey from the National Alliance for Caregiving and AARP found that approximately 34.2 million people had provided unpaid care to an adult age 50 or older in the last 12 months. Many unpaid caregivers are pulling double duty, caring for their aging parents while also raising families of their own.

While there’s no guarantee that aging men and women will require care, caregivers figure to become more necessary as life expectancies increase. In fact, recent years have seen the senior population in the United States exceed 50 million for the first time in the country’s history, and figures from the U.S. Census Bureau suggest that figure will continue to rise until 2029.

Men and women who are preparing to welcome an aging loved one into their homes may

wonder how to make that transition go smoothly, especially if they have young children at home. The following are some tips that can help families prepare to welcome an aging friend or family member into their homes.

• Speak with your loved one’s physicians. Speak with an aging loved one’s physicians so you can get a complete picture of their physical and mental condition. This can give you an accurate depiction of how much care your loved one needs now and how much they might need in the future if their condition worsens.

• Discuss forthcoming changes as a family. Once you gain a full understanding of your loved one’s physical and mental condition and before this person moves into your home, discuss it with your family. Adding a new member to your household will affect everyone, so each member of the family, including young children, should be included when discussing how the family dynamic will change. Parents must recognize that even young children may be asked to make

sacrifices to accommodate aging loved ones. Explain these sacrifices in advance and how important it is to make an aging loved one feel welcome when they move in.

• Discuss conditions with children. Children may recognize their grandparents or elderly loved ones have physical limitations, but they likely won’t understand conditions such as dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.

Parents can ask a physician about how to explain cognitive decline to young children. Children may not recognize cognitive decline as readily as adults, so parents may need to discuss these conditions with their children periodically and/or if the conditions worsen.

(Metro) Cataracts are the most common cause of vision loss among people age 40 and older. According to All About Vision, cataracts also are the principal cause of blindness in the world.

There are more cases of cataracts worldwide than there are glaucoma, macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy, states Prevent Blindness America. Fortunately, cataracts are easily recognized and treated.

What are cataracts?

A cataract is a clouding of the lens in the eye that affects vision. The lens is the clear part of the eye that helps focus light - and images - on the retina. The lens must be clear to receive a sharp image. If the lens is cloudy, vision will be blurred.

Cataracts tend to form slowly. Initially, they only affect a small part of the lens, and they’re not very bothersome as a result. However, over time, cataracts can grow and impair vision.

Seeing ‘halos’ around lights, fading of colors, sensitivity to light, glare, and the need for brighter light for reading and handling tasks are common symptoms.

What causes cataracts?

Various things, including aging or injury to the eye tissue, can cause cataracts. Prior eye surgery, diabetes, long-term use of steroid medications, and

inherited genetic disorders also can cause cataracts, says the Mayo Clinic. Smoking and alcohol use as well as consistent exposure to UV sunlight also may contribute to the formation of cataracts. With aging, the lenses in the eyes become less flexible, less transparent and thicker. Tis-

Occupational therapy has many benefits (Metro) People may be familiar with physical therapy, which many are prescribed after suffering a sports-related injury or being injured in an accident.

But less may know about occupational therapy, a form of therapy that can help individuals live full, happy lives even if they’re dealing with permanent disabilities or chronic conditions.

The American Occupational Therapy Association, Inc., says that occupational therapy helps people perform daily tasks to reach goals. This can include helping children or adults with disabilities participate fully in work or school. Occupational therapy also may intervene during or after a physical or mental illness so that one can regain lost skills. Occupational therapists tend to focus on treating people who need assistance with a physical, sensory or cognitive disability. OT practitioners address psychological, social and environmental factors that can impact a person’s ability to function.

Even though one may think OTs primarily treat adults, especially aging seniors, this is not the case. The health and wellness resource KidsHealth, from Nemours, indicates that children also benefit. Occupational therapists can work with children after surgery or help those with behavioral problems. OTs also help children recover after suffering traumatic injuries, and can even help kids with developmental delays.

Occupational therapy differs from physical therapy. While physical therapy deals with pain, range of motion, endurance, and

strength, among other things, the AOTA notes that OT tries to hone fine motor skills, visualperception skills and cognitive skills and to lessen sensory-processing deficits. Very often OT is used in conjunction with PT. Occupational therapy can be a rewarding career with many different opportunities. Therapists work in various settings, including schools, hospitals, rehab facilities, nursing homes, and

even in independent practices.

In addition, new specialities, such as assisting those with low vision or helping workers adapt to ergonomic tools, enable even more specialized concentrations.

People who think they can benefit from occupational therapy should first consult with a primary care physician or a discharge team from a hospital to find out which OT services may benefit them.

The right foods can fight inflammation (Metro) The human body and its immune system excels at fighting foreign invaders like bacteria and viruses. Signaling chemicals called interleukins tell cells whether they are needed to fight illness or they should wait in the wings. While these immune defenders are doing their jobs, soreness, fatigue and swelling can occur - the natural side effects of an immune system response - but will soon dissipate.

However, many people deal with immune systems that are consistently revved up, even when no invaders are present.

This is the problem with many chronic diseases and immune system dysfunction. Unfortunately, the inflammation that is a hallmark of immune defense becomes a daily problem that may result in chronic pain and other complications. What many people may not realize is that the foods that they are putting into their bodies may exacerbate inflammatory responses, while others may help keep inflammation at bay.

People with rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s disease, Hashi-

moto’s, and other chronic illnesses may find that turning to the right diet can tame inflammation and other symptoms. Recently, many health experts, including Dr. Barry Sears, founder of the Inflammation and Research Foundation and author of the ‘Zone Diet,’ and Dr. Andrew Weil, who offers the Anti-Inflammatory Food Pyramid, have begun to tout certain foods that are purported to reduce inflammatory response over an extended period of time.

As beneficial as some foods can be, it’s important to note that individuals are unique and certain foods may produce a particular response in some but not in others. Systematically isolating certain foods can help paint a picture of foods that can be problematic. But generally speaking, refined carbohydrates, sugar-sweetened beverages, fried foods, and processed meats may increase inflammation, advises Harvard Health Publishing.

Conversely, certain foods and beverages that have been identified as reducing inflammation for many people. These include:

• tomatoes • olive oil • green leafy vegetables and cruciferous vegetables • nuts, like almonds and walnuts • fatty fish • berries • avocados • green tea • peppers • grapes • turmeric • dark chocolate Including these foods in one’s daily diet may help to relieve the pain, bloating and fatigue associated with inflammation.

It is important to speak with a doctor before making any dietary changes. Discuss any inflammation issues you have been having and which foods might help. Generally speaking, a diet full of diverse, antioxidant-rich foods can provide relief for those with various levels of inflammation.

Babysitting tips for grandparents (Metro) Witnessing your children getting older and starting their own lives and families can be bittersweet. There is pride that comes with seeing their successes, but the melancholy of knowing that the years have passed so quickly. Although you may no longer be tucking your children into bed, reading them bedtime stories or bandaging ‘boo-boos,’ when your children have children, the chance to nurture can start anew.

One of the great joys that comes from having older children is the ability to welcome and love grandchildren. Grandchildren are points of light in people’s lives and provide the exuberance and excitement that reminds you of your own youth.

Grandparents often are thrilled to be involved in the care and upbringing of their grandkids.

Some may also live with their grandchildren to help take some pressures off of adult children.

Babysitting is one way that grandparents can be a frequent fixture in their grandkids’ lives.

If it’s been some time since you cared for little children, it’s well worth it to take a refresher course in child care.
