(Metro) Games are as popular as ever. For evidence of that, one need look no further than his or her own smartphone. The number of hours people spend playing games on their smartphones might surprise even the most ardent players.

According to the mobile research firm Apptopia, between May and July of 2018, mobile users spent a whopping 3.38 billion hours playing the wildly popular strategy game ‘Clash of Clans,’ making it the most popular smartphone game in the world during that time period.

Games might be seen as a way to unwind, but some games can potentially do more than merely provide a way to escape the daily grind.

When South Central College President Annette Parker talks about community college, she puts a strong emphasis on community.

And thanks to a number of opportunities both on and off campus, SCC students are impacting the ‘real world’ even before graduation.

A discussion about the ways South Central College influences the workforce brought legislators and community representatives together on the Faribault campus Wednesday afternoon. Hosted by SCC President Annette Parker and Minnesota State Chancellor Devinder Malhotra, the afternoon included a tour, presentations and opportunities for attendees to share their connection with SCC.

“I am thrilled with the work going on, but more importantly, I am thrilled with the vibrant, deep, longstanding partnerships,” said Malhotra. “We are indeed shifting the paradigm and re-imagining higher education.”

Parker led the group through the campus’ welding, mechatronics and carpentry departments at the beginning of the workshop.

Legislators and community representatives learned about the programs’ histories, facilities and the way in which the programs give students real-world experiences.

Under Parker’s leadership — she began at the school in July 2013 — improvements have been made to these departments.

Decked out Faribault House serves as a portal to city’s past In the last year, the Rice County Historical Society has had three or four open events, 21 guided tours and hosted over 600 Faribault schoolchildren at the Alexander Faribault House on First Street, but perhaps none were as authentic as the French-Canadian open house, held this weekend.

Friday, the house opened from 4 to 7 p.m., with visitors mulling about Rice County’s oldest building. It was built in 1853 by the city’s namesake, Alexander Faribault.

The house was built with materials brought by ox-pulled cart from Hastings at a time when Faribault wasn’t yet a city and Minnesota wouldn’t become a state for another five years. In 1944, the home was saved from demolition by the “Save the Faribault House Committee” and given to the Rice County Historical Society a year later.

It still stands, though it has undergone renovations and stabilization in recent years and doesn’t offer running water. Having no bathrooms means there aren’t regular museum hours and the house is only open up for special events and tours, though this one might be the best time to visit.

who provide interesting pieces of information and stories along the way, giving the feel of a family holiday instead of a history lecture.

“Oftentimes, as you take tours through a house, you’ve got a guided tour and you go through at their pace and on a day like today and tomorrow, the visitor is the one that sets the pace,” Garwood said Friday. “They get to stay in a room as long as they want to and ask the questions they want to ask and I think it’s a really fun way to see the house that’s unique at this time of the year.”

The second floor is open to see the family bedrooms and the sewing room of Faribault’s wife, Mary Elizabeth, but the highlight of the house might be in the dining room, where its residents would have gathered for the Christmas meal, with a fruit display propped up at the center of the table.

After months of wrangling, the city and District One Hospital have come to terms on an agreement that will allow the city to market Johnston Hall, possibly saving the historic structure.

The fate of the 1888 building, which is adjacent to the hospital, has long been in flux. Hospital leaders have said the building is in poor condition and that repairs would be too costly.

While there have been several discussions over the years about razing the Romanesque building, hospital officials last year seemed intent on going forward with its plan, even beginning an environmental assessment needed to get a city demolition permit.

But in June, hospital President David Albrecht offered to pause demolition plans and allow the city to market the building for redevelopment.

In a May 4 letter to the city, Albrecht said the change would “allow District One Hospital and the city of Faribault additional time to consider and alternative proposal for the Johnston Hall property and the District Once Healthcare Campus.”

The agreement, which the City Council approved Tuesday, gives the city two years to enter into an agreement with a suitable developer. But that won’t stop hospital officials from restarting the demolition process before the two years is up. That worried some council members and Karl Vohs, a member of the city’s Historic Preservation Commission.

The right foods can fight inflammation (Metro) The human body and its immune system excels at fighting foreign invaders like bacteria and viruses. Signaling chemicals called interleukins tell cells whether they are needed to fight illness or they should wait in the wings. While these immune defenders are doing their jobs, soreness, fatigue and swelling can occur - the natural side effects of an immune system response - but will soon dissipate.

However, many people deal with immune systems that are consistently revved up, even when no invaders are present. This is the problem with many chronic diseases and immune system dysfunction. What many people may not realize is that the foods that they are putting into their bodies may exacerbate inflammatory responses, while others may help keep inflammation at bay.

Home security tips for seniors (Metro) Seniors are often targeted by criminals. Though many criminals target seniors from afar via telephone or internet scams, criminals seek to enter seniors’ homes. The Bureau of Justice Statistics offers that, between 2003 and 2013, the ratio of property crime to violent crime was higher for the elderly and persons between the ages of 50 and 64 than it was for younger persons between the ages of 25 and 49.

Home security is important for people of all ages, but especially so for seniors and aging individuals living alone. By following certain safety tips and developing a home security plan, seniors can feel safer at home.

• Lock windows and doors. It may seem like common sense, but failure to repeatedly lock windows and doors can, and often does, give burglars easy entry into the home.

• Think about a smart doorbell.

Technology now enables doorbells to provide a video feed to a person’s smartphone or tablet over WiFi. This allows residents to see who is at the door and speak to this person without having to open the door.

Some products like Ring¨ will even register motion activity and record short videos from outside of the house.

• Don’t share or leave keys.

Avoid leaving keys under a mat or in a flower pot. Others may be watching your actions and gain access to your home while you are away.

• Ask for ID. When service people or other individuals come to the door, verify their credentials by asking to see some identification.

• Get a home security system.

The best protection against burglars is a home security alarm, states HomeSecurityResource.org. Such an alarm often deters burglars from breaking in.

(Metro) Gray hair is a natural side effect of aging. The rate at which hair will turn to gray differs based on genetics and other factors.

Some people may go gray seemingly overnight, while others may gray at the temples first before the rest of their hair gradually changes color.

Aging women often wonder if they should cover up their gray hair or embrace the silver. Going gray is no longer something that has women running to their stylists at the sight of the first gray strand. Some actually opt for silver even before their own gray sets in. According to a 2017 survey of hair trends by L’OrÊal Professional, 28 percent of women embraced or considered opting for silver hair. The trend has continued to gain steam. Celebrities like Jamie Lee Curtis and Helen Mirren were some of the first to embrace their grays.

Younger celebrities like Kendall Jenner, Pink and Lady Gaga have opted for silver tresses to make a statement.

Creating highlights to offset gray hair can work as well. Spraying lemon juice on hair and sitting in the sun can produce lightening effects.

Top causes of wrinkles (Metro) Getting older brings about many physical and emotional changes. Wrinkles are one such physical change that is widely associated with aging.

Some people begin fighting wrinkling long before their first wrinkle even appears. A poll of 2,000 women conducted by DermStore found that around 30 percent of women under 35 regularly use anti-wrinkle products. The average millennial user starts at age 26 compared to the average currently 55-year-old woman, who began using wrinkle-reduction products at around age 47.

As skin ages, its natural tendency is to become less elastic.

However, other factors also contribute to the formation of wrinkles.

Understanding the main culprits behind wrinkles can help people combat them more effectively.

• Exposure to UV light: The Mayo Clinic says that ultraviolet radiation speeds up the natural aging process and is the primary cause of early wrinkling. UV from the sun can break down the supportive connective tissue in the skin, which includes collagen and elastin fibers.

Using sunscreen and staying out of the sun as much as possible can help.

• Exposure to pollution: Pollution can cause free radical damage that contributes to wrinkling, advises Maral Skelsey, M.D., director of the Dermatologic Sur-

gery Center of Washington. Other data indicates those who live in urban settings have more wrinkles and age spots than those who live in rural areas. Washing off skin contaminants from the air each day may be beneficial.

• Smoking: The contaminants in cigarette smoke can damage the skin, promoting wrinkles, states the skincare company Nivea. Also, dragging on a cigarette purses the lips and can form deep wrinkles around this area of the face.

• Poor diet and stress: Stress and eating unhealthy foods, such as a diet high in sugar, may contribute to premature aging of the skin. According to Kristina Goldenberg, MD, board-certified dermatologist of Goldenberg Dermatology, after sugar is ingested it goes through a process called glycation, which involves binding to different proteins in the body. These proteins include collagen and elastin. By binding to these building blocks of the skin, sugar weakens collagen and elastin and will lead to an appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Stress can increase cortisol levels that affect the skin’s ability to stay hydrated and elastic.

Avoiding wrinkle triggers and following a dermatologist’s advice on skincare products and care can help people stave off wrinkles.

Learn how to sleep like a child again

(Metro) Many adults lament that even if they were solid sleepers in their younger years, by the age of 50, their quality of sleep has unraveled. Some cling to the wisdom that people simply do not need as much sleep as they get older. Even though that is partly true, sufficient sleep is still a vital component of a healthy life.

The National Sleep Foundation recently updated its sleep recommendations per age group to include categories ‘may be appropriate’ and ‘not recommended.’ This includes a range of hours that may be adequate for certain adults. Adults between the ages of 26 and 65 are advised to get seven to nine hours of sleep per

evening. However, six hours or 10 hours also may be acceptable. People over the age of 65 need roughly seven to eight hours of sleep each night, though between five and six hours also may be fine. Generally speaking, anything under five hours is not recommended based on data reviewed by sleep experts.

Many older adults do not get enough sleep due to insomnia, states Jack Gardner, MD, a neurologist certified in sleep medicine. They’re concerned about health issues, may have sleep apnea, can experience pain or frequent urination, or may be taking medication that impedes sleep. While you cannot modify your genetic makeup, knowing your family’s medical history can help you take the steps necessary to protect yourself.
