Welcome to Owatonna Parks and Recreation Spring 2018 As I write this letter the forecast is cooler temps and snow is on the ground, but here at Parks & Recreation, we’re looking forward to warmer temps, green grass and sunny skies. Spring really is right around the corner.

We’re very excited to offer our NEW! programs this spring….River Springs Season Passes, new Brooktree membership options, Fling Golf at Brooktree, new Birthday Party Packages, and a new software system for registrations. We are also working on new programs for this summer, if you have any suggestions, let us know.

We’re also bringing back some past ‘new’ favorites, Parent/Child Golf, youth lacrosse classes, and weekly water park specials just to name a few. See dates and other details inside.

As always, we take pride in our customer service and continue to improve our communications and our registration process. Our communication plan includes updates to our website – www.ci.owatonna.mn.us/parkrec - to make navigation easier, we have a weekly article in the Owatonna People’s Press in every weekend edition, while SeniorPlace articles appear weekly on Wednesdays. Tune in to KRFO on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 8:40 a.m. for our radio shows. Be sure to like us on Facebook and follow us on Instagram and Twitter as well!

A reminder we have eliminated the non-resident fees through an agreement with Steele County. All citizens within the county pay the same fee for recreation programs. Only participants living outside Steele County pay the outside participant fee. Please note that adult participant fees and rental fees listed are payable to the Owatonna Parks & Recreation and include sales tax, while youth programs and lessons do not charge sales tax.

SeniorPlace memberships for 2018 are available at the same low price of $37.58. Our partnership program continues to expand with local businesses

and is one of the many benefits that come with a membership. Check out the SeniorPlace page for details for all the offerings. New hours at SeniorPlace are Monday-Friday 8 am-8 pm, Saturday 9 am-4 pm, and Sunday 8 am-12 noon.

Brooktree Golf Course memberships are also available now for 2018. The golf course and clubhouse has had many upgrades in the past, if you haven’t golfed Brooktree recently, you must check it out, as the improvements are amazing! See the Brooktree pages for the many NEW things in 2018.

It’s never too soon to reserve a pavilion for your special event! Call the office and we’ll be glad to find the perfect venue for your graduation, family reunion, birthday party, company outing or any other event. We have a bounce house to rent for your event! If you’re worried about weather, we have rentals available at the Morehouse Chalet, SeniorPlace and the Brooktree clubhouse.

New Online Registration System

We are transitioning from our current software system to a newer, more user-friendly system. This system includes registration, membership, facility scheduling and more.

Various enhancements are available with the new system such as the ability to use your credit on account when registering online and no more midnight online registrations.

Please take a few moments to create an account in our new system, MaxGalaxy. It will substantially ease the transition and allow for your first experience with this system to go more quickly. All we need from you at this time is to create your account. We plan to go live with MaxGalaxy on February 20, 2018 and spring registration starts on February 22. The Owatonna Parks and Recreation staff may occasionally photograph or videotape events and program participants. These images are used by Owatonna Parks and Recreation in print and/or electronic media unless specifi-

cally requested otherwise by a participant or parent/guardian.

Youth Scholarship Fund

This fund helps support programs for all youth in the Owatonna School District and Adult Therapeutic Recreation Programs. Forms are available at the Park and Recreation Office. Participants must pay 25% of program fees, any late fees, and must show verification of one of the qualifications.

Qualifications for Scholarship * Current recipients of Free or Reduced Lunch Program * Current recipients of SSI (Supplemental Security Income) or Social Security Benefits * Current recipients of Medical Assistance Program * Other circumstances (will need to explain)

South Country Health Alliance (SCHA)

Members of South Country Health Alliance can now receive $15 off Park & Recreation youth activities and classes. Therapeutic Recreation activities are also included. Maximum of three classes per calendar year. Scholarship form must be completed and current SCHA membership card must be presented at the time of registration.

Uniforms for youth activities

Participants may keep T-shirts donated by business sponsors for youth baseball & softball, volleyball, squirt and youth basketball. All other uniforms and equipment must be returned to coaches at the end of the season.

Refund/Cancellation Policy

The full policy is on the Parks and Recreation website.

General Terms: A $10 administration fee is applied to all refunds (except when cancelled by Parks & Rec). If activity is cancelled by Parks & Rec prior to its completion, refunds are prorated. Refunds due to cancellation by Parks & Rec will be automatic. All other refunds must be requested by the purchaser. Refunds are issued after City Council approval, except when credit is applied on customer’s account (when applicable). Registrations and memberships are not transferrable once a program starts.

Programs, Classes, Player Fees: No refunds are given after the program starts, except when due to injury or illness. Refunds are prorated, not to exceed 50% of the registration fee.

Trips: No refund is given after the registration deadline, unless the spot can be filled by a waiting list or if there is no waiting list, a replacement is found by the participant.

Memberships: No refund is given except when due to illness, injury or moving from the area.

Refunds are prorated, not to exceed 50% of the membership fee. (Seasonal memberships – no refund is allowed after July 1st.)

Pavilions/Facilities: Facility rental refunds are given when 30 days advance notice is given. Damage deposit refunds are given regardless of notice. River Springs only: If the

facility closes due to weather, a new reservation date can be requested, or a refund will be issued. For reservations made less than two weeks in advance of the date, only half of the deposit is refunded.

Rain Checks: Rain checks are issued upon request when Parks & Recreation closes a facility.

Requirements: River Springs Water Park patron has been at the facility one hour or less. Brooktree Golf Course patrons must have completed less than half of their round.

Waiver of Liability to the City of Owatonna

Program participants, by registering for an activity, agrees the City of Owatonna will not be liable for any claim, demand, injury, damage, action or course for action while participating in a recreation program. Participation in recreation programs are voluntary in nature and activities offered are choices of the individual.

Directory DataThe directory data may be released by Parks and Recre-

ation includes, but is not limited to, name, participation in activities, awards received and images including candid photos and videos of participants in class, activities or sport settings. You may decline authorization by contacting the Parks & Recreation Office.

Youth with Disabilities

Youth with disabilities or health concerns are encouraged to participate in any youth program. Adaptive equipment, program modifications and other accommodations to assist the child will allow them to participate with equal advantage. Coaches and staff receive pertinent information regarding the child’s needs prior to their first meeting.

T-Ball & Squirts

First exposure to the game of baseball and softball, geared for boys and girls.

T-Ball is for those entering Kindergarten or 1st grade in the fall. Squirts is for those entering 1st grade (if they have had one year of T-ball), or 2nd grade. The program emphasizes skill and social development; scrimmages will be played.

A partnership between the Park and Recreation and the Huskies Fastpitch Club provides developmental, skill-based fastpitch softball programs.

MINI CRUSH softball - Grades 1 & 2 (current grade)

• An in-house Park & Rec and Huskies Fastpitch program emphasizing fundamental softball skill development using fun and creative drills appropriate for this age group.

• Players will learn the proper techniques for throwing, catching, fielding, batting, base running, and good sportsmanship.

• Practices will primarily focus on skill development drills and stations, will consist of smaller groups and will include fun competitions throughout to showcase skill development.

• Coach pitching and/or pitching machines will be used.

• Each participant will receive a uniform, consisting of a shirt and socks.

Sizes needed at the time of registration.

• No evaluations needed, players will be grouped together by grade.

Coaches will notify players in late May regarding the first practice.

• Monday and Wednesday evenings June thru July.

• Registration in-person February 26 from 4:00 – 6:00pm at Senior Place.

After that, registrations will be accepted at the Park & Rec office.

• Fee: $50 payable to Park and Rec until March 8. Registrations received after March 8 will be subject to a $10 late fee.

JUNIOR CRUSH softball – Grades 3 & 4 (current grade)

• A competitive travel program for – 4th and 5th Graders – Born 20072008, must be 10 or younger as of January 1, 2018.

• Registration is February 26, 4:00 – 6:00pm at Senior Place. Pre-registration is currently available at owatonnafastpitch.com. However, you must still attend registration at the Senior Place to try on uniforms and pay fees.

• Evaluations will be conducted March 13th and 15th at McKinley School. Schedule and times will be posted on owatonnafastpitch. com.

• One game per week – at least one practice per week. Coaches will notify players regarding the first practice date and season schedule.

• Fees: o $175 Registration fee o $90 Fundraiser fee (15 pancake breakfast tickets provided to sell) o $125 Workers deposit check (returned if family works required hours) • Each team will participate in 2 tournaments (does not include a state tournament) • Each player receives a team jersey. Black pants and socks are to be supplied by the player. Jersey sizes are required at the time of registration.

• This is an in-house Park & Rec and Huskies Fastpitch program emphasizing fundamental softball skill development using fun and creative drills Owatonna Crush U12 and U14 Fastpitch Softball: appropriate for this age group.

• A competitive travel program for: o U12: Born 2005-2006, must be 12 or younger as of January • Note on age criteria: 1, 2018 o 3rd graders are not able to play in the U10 traveling league at this o U14: Born 2003-2004, must be 14 or younger as of January time. However, if the U10 traveling registration numbers are low, HFC may decide to invite 3rd graders to participate in evaluations 1, 2018 if they wish to be considered for the U10 program.

• Registration is February 26, 4:00 – 6:00pm at Senior Place. Pre-regiso 4th graders may either participate in this league OR the U10 travtration is currently available at owatonnafastpitch.com. Lacrosse Ten entry-level skills training sessions that focus on learning and building the skills needed to play lacrosse, including, passing, catching, ground balls, defense, offence, and transition.

Sessions are twice a week from the last week of April until the last week of May. One of the final sessions may include a scrimmage with an out of town team; if so, travel will need to be provided by the parents. Coaching and equipment is provided by the Owatonna Lacrosse Association. However, players are required to furnish their own mouth guards and appropriate clothing. No player will be allowed to participate if they are missing their mouth guard.

Morning activities at River Springs do not include the daily admission fee (unless otherwise noted). Lap Swim, Water Walking, Water Aerobics and Tiny Tot Time are included in the Season Pass. If you would like to stay for open swim after your program finishes, you must exit the park, return and pay the regular rate or use a coupon.

Lap Swim and Water Walking Enjoy a pool workout at River Springs. Lap Swim is held in the activity pool and Water Walking is in the Lazy River. Youth under age 16 are not permitted, unless accompanied by an adult. Program is cancelled if lightning or thunder is present or when rain causes poor visibility for lifeguards.

The instructor is a qualified water safety instructor and experienced in making adaptations for the swimmer with special needs. If a WSI is unavailable, lifeguard staff will conduct a leisure swim session using games and water activities to promote physical exercise, socialization, and independence in the water. Those using a wheelchair may use our pool lift for transfer in and out of the water. Anyone whose ability restricts them from using the locker rooms independently may use the bathroom and changing area located directly off the pool. A south side accessible entrance is available. If your child needs further 1:1 assistance, we ask you to provide a volunteer. Class limit is eight kids.

Teen Club Teen Club is an activity group designed for teens, 14-22 years, who have developmental disabilities and would benefit from social interaction and a place to meet friends. Activities include structured crafts, games, local trips/tours, and attending OHS events as a group.

Personal Trainer If you are in need of a Personal Trainer, the Tennis & Fitness Center has just the person for you!

Our facility trainer, Aaron Halla, has a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education, NonTeaching (Exercise Science), an ACE Trainer Certification and many years’ experience as a fitness trainer. Aaron is an Owatonna native and an OHS alumni. He has trained various levels of fitness abilities: from athletes, to beginners, to those with special needs. He has a flexible schedule, affordable training packages, and will work with you to meet all your fitness and health needs.

Strength Circuit Training Lead by our Personal Trainer, this class will provide exercises that will help you with fitness goals as well as daily activities. Your strength, balance and coordination will be enhanced with participation in this class. Exercises will be adapted to your fitness level and abilities.

Hard Surface Trails

Buxton Trail, Kaplan’s Woods Parkway Trail, Cashman Crossing, North Straight River Parkway (large woods and Wildung/Ihlenfeld Trails) and the Muckle Trail. Maps are available at the Parks & Recreation office.

If you walk all the trails in Owatonna, even at a leisurely pace, you can burn more than 1500 calories. Enjoy the spring weather, burn calories, and spend quality time with friends and family by walking on your Owatonna trails.

Travel in a consistent and predictable manner.

•

Cyclists and in-line skaters should pass on the left when going by others moving in the same direction. Look ahead and back to be sure the lane is clear before pulling out to pass, then give a warning signal by voice, bell, or horn before passing.

•

Yield when entering or crossing trails and roadways.

•

When traveling in a group, use only half the trail, so as not to block the flow of traffic.

•

Pets must be on a leash. You are responsible for cleaning up after your pets. Dispensers with “pooper-scoopers” are available on each trail.

•

Trails are recreational. Cyclists and in-line skaters may not race or use excessive speed. Please report any misuse, vandalism, or maintenance problem to 507-444-4321 or 507-444-3800.

Dog Park at Lake Chase Bring your pooch out to the Lake Chase Dog Park. Opened in July of 2014, this park has been a popular spot for dogs and their humans to socialize with others!

Help keep our park in good shape, and remember to scoop your poop!

The park is located at 1915 State Avenue NW.

In-Line Rink Available for use at Morehouse Park. Lighting can be activated by following instructions next to the walk-in door. Reservations can also be made for exclusive use through the Park and Recreation office at no charge.

Owatonna Soccer Complex Lincoln School is home to the complex, and has nine fields exclusively for soccer use.

Softball/baseball practice and golfing are NOT allowed on the fields.

Tennis Courts Sixteen city-owned tennis courts are available. Manthey Park Courts (also striped for Pickleball), Sid Kenyon Courts (near Lincoln School), Brown Park Courts (artificial turf ) and Dartts Park Courts. Six indoor courts are available at the Tennis Center at West Hills.

Pavilions Pavilions are available at Brown Park, Dartts Park (small and large), Fairgrounds Park, Gainey Park, Jaycee Park, Kaplan’s Woods Parkway, Manthey Park (small and large), Mineral Springs Park (small and large), Morehouse Park (large and Warsinski Chalet), and Owatonna Soccer Complex.

Chalet - No smoking is allowed in the Warsinski Chalet. Balloons are not allowed. Keys should be picked up one or two business days before the rental.
