Best Car Roll-In or Show: Henderson Classic Car Roll-In
By TOM NELSON
Since 2009, classic car enthusiasts have been making a weekly pilgrimage on Tuesday evenings in the summer to experience the Henderson Classic Car Roll-In, which takes place on Main Street in this historic town located along the Minnesota River.
Henderson’s Classic Car Roll-In regularly attracts up to 250 classic cars and crowds of nearly 1,500 each week during the event, which runs from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday evenings. This year’s Roll-In’s started on May 27 and the final scheduled Tuesday Classic Car Roll-In this year is slated for Sept. 23.
“It started very, very slow…I remember being part of the Chamber of Commerce, I was president at the time, and someone came in with this idea. We were overwhelmed to hear that they had 25 cars the very first night. Now it has grown substantially and we have created a non-profit from that idea and it’s an entity
unto its own,” said Jeff Steinborn, the Henderson Classic Car Roll-In President. “Now we are experiencing an average of about 250 cars a night.”
Steinborn continued, “Once that first year was over, in the off-season people started asking about it and just like that the numbers started growing…even the fans of classic cars started to attend. Now we are getting a lot of fans and the streets are filled.”
One of the oldest communities in the state of Minnesota, Henderson historic downtown is the perfect setting for a classic car gathering and has helped grow the event along with boosting business in the city.
“You bring in vintage cars and it kind of sets the mood when you have a vintage looking Main Street as well,” Steinborn said.
The event continues to grown in popularity each year and it now features live music, contests and games, door prizes and, of course, classic cars.
As a non-profit group, the event has been

able to secure grants and purchase equipment needed to help put the show on each week. In addition, a group of almost 70 volunteers help keep things running smoothly throughout the year.
“Being consistent really helped us in marketing this thing,” Steinborn said about the success of the Roll-In. “We just decided that we are going to do the best we can and we are going to do it every Tuesday.”
Steinborn sees more growth for the event as the County Road 6, a scenic by-way that travels north out of Henderson is being paved this summer
“When that road opens that will be a beautiful drive for a lot of people that come from the north, so we just know that we are going to get a lot more attention, a lot more people are going to visit,” Steinborn said.
He added, “We try to make this about education as well and that is what our non-profit is based on…an understanding of classic automobiles.”
Admission is free for the Henderson Classic

Best Orchard/Berry Farm: Lorence’s Berry Farm
When the time is ripe, area berry lovers know exactly where to go for prime picking: Lorence’s Berry Farm, located a few
miles north of Northfield.
Voted 2025’s Best Orchard/ Berry Farm in the Best of Southern Minn contest, Lorence’s is a family-run operation that’s been a favorite in the region for decades.
“I give a lot of credit to our employees,” said Shawn Lorence, a second-generation owner. “With their dedication, they make the operation work.
products—including asparagus each May and June, strawberries during June and July and Everbearing raspberries from August through September—is what Lorence’s does best.
“If you don’t have a good staff, it’s hard to accomplish what you’re trying to do.”
And producing high quality, locally grown

Fifty to 60 seasonal employees—even a dozen or so more during the peak strawberry harvest—make Lorence’s tick, as they pre-pick produce for customers seeking an easier buy, cultivate the fields or guide U-pick patrons to the right—er, ripe—patches in the moment.
“We like taking care of our customers and employees,” assured Lorence, whose wife of 33 years, Gayle, does her part to support the

operation.
What’s one of the biggest berry farm challenges? Keeping up with the 24/7 activity and demands—and weathering the weather roller coaster—from May through September.
“We’re always trying to pace ourselves,” laughed Lorence. “I married a city girl and she thinks it’s all a bit dysfunctional.”
Twenty acres of strawberries make the ruby red gems Lorence’s biggest product, but their eight acres of asparagus are popular plants, too, with some stems sold at area co-ops and farmer’s markets.
And 2.5 acres of Everbearing raspberries keep Lorence’s hopping all the way to the end of September.
Despite its Northfield address, Lorence’s regularly draws customers from 30 minutes to an hour away, with many coming from the south metro suburbs. Sometimes, the rural agricultural setting is as much an attraction as the produce itself.
“They enjoy the brief ag experience,” said Lorence. “Evening pickers are usually more relaxed than morning pickers, who are pretty goal-oriented.
“And it’s fun to watch how excited people get about being here; you see it each season.
The other day, a father with kids walked up to the shed and asked about pick-your-own, and when I told him where to go, he turned around after walking about five feet and said, ‘I’m so excited for this.’
“I think a lot of it has to do with the fact we don’t have much of a summer in Minnesota.”
Another recent customer told Lorence she’d been coming to their berry farm for over three decades.
Lorence and his family are gratified to be named Best Orchard/Berry Farm of Southern Minnesota.
“That’s great,” he said. “I’m really grateful for all of the people who’ve been loyal to us for all these years.”

Best Breakfast/Brunch: Old Town Bagels
This year’s Best of SoMinn Best Breakfast/Brunch award winner has two decades of experience serving up great food and coffee in downtown Owatonna.
A favorite community gathering spot for both breakfast and lunch, Old Town Bagels (OTB) offers a wide range of menu items that center around their fresh homemade bagels along with coffee, espresso and specialty cold drinks at its location at 207 N. Cedar Ave. in Owatonna.
“We actually opened in the storefront next door and we were there from 2005 to 2021,” said Mark Wilson, who owns OTB with his wife Stacy Wilson. “Then we moved into this new space in October of 2021, which is twice as big and remodeled.”
The move to the new location has been a positive one for OTB as it has allowed them to expand their coffee menu to include an espresso bar. The cafe has also added Chocolate Shoppe Ice Cream, which includes a selection of 24 flavors that are available each day. Still, the star of the show remains OTB’s bagels.

“Our basic bread and butter are the fresh bagels everyday,” Mark Wilson said. “We start making dough for tomorrow’s bagels in the evening and then the baker comes in around 2:00 a.m. and bakes them…and they are fresh every morning. We have a boiled bagel recipe and they are made from scratch… they are boiled before they are baked.”
On a typical day, OTB will offer 15 different types of bagels along with a couple of extra flavors on the weekend.
“Certainly, our customers have their favorite flavors and that is the one that they stick too but everyone is a bit different in what they choose,” Mark Wilson said.
OTB offers a variety of unique cream cheeses for its bagels ranging from plain to strawberry/raspberry to sun-dried tomato along with flavored spreads like honey butter and roasted red pepper humus. The bagels are also used as a base for OTB’s breakfast and lunch sandwiches that include a wide-range of toppings.
“One of our top sandwiches for breakfast is the Breakfast Melt, it has ranch, egg, pepper jack cheese, cheddar cheese and bacon bits,” Mark Wilson said. “At lunchtime, our most

popular sandwiches would be the Chicken Pesto Melt or the Perfect Pastrami…those two seem to be the most popular. We also have smoked salmon and a variety of other sandwiches.
He added, “We’ve stuck with some of sandwiches that are tried and true, that we’ve had for 20 years, and then some of them my wife Stacy and the staff have added some since then and they have been popular additions as well.”
The bagels are also a popular carry-out item with many customers dropping by to pick up a dozen bagels and cream cheese for the office or family gatherings. OTB also offers a catering menu for events, meetings and social functions.
“We do a lot of bagel bunches, which are 12 bagels and two cream cheeses, people get those and get them sliced and take them to work,” Mark Wilson said. “With our old space, the percentage of carry-out was higher but I would say now it has gone the other direction with us having twice as much space, more tables, comfortable seating and a better atmosphere, I would say we are pushing 50-50 on in-house dining compared to carry-out.
“We also do some catering and that has picked up since COVID. When COVID was going on, a lot of people weren’t having anything brought in, but that’s starting to change where they are having food delivered in, so we are happy to supply them at their location and bring it to them.”
The new location has created an outstanding location for customers to gather and enjoy OTB’s food and drink options.
“We have some people who come in four times a week and they have their favorite table

and their favorite chair,” Mark Wilson noted.
The location on Cedar Avenue has also seen a major facelift in recent years and Mark Wilson is very appreciative of the work done by the city to improve the downtown experience.
“Within the last two years the city has done a streetscape and the three blocks, of which we are right in the center, have been upgraded to make it more walking friendly with park benches and the streets have all been redone. It is a remodeled and rejuvenated area of town,” Mark Wilson said.

Best Pizza: George’s Vineyard
Step inside George’s Vineyard in Northfield and let the aroma of fresh-baked pizza envelop your senses.
It won’t be long before a piping hot pie with a distinctive crackerlike crust is set before you, making your mouth water even before it’s quite cool enough to take that first savory bite.
That is — if you can decide which toppings you’d prefer.
“I’d say the top three favorites are the House Supreme [sausage, pepperoni, beef, salami, onion, mushrooms, green pepper, extra cheese], Phil’s Special [sausage, pepperoni, extra cheese] and the Buster [sausage, pepperoni, Canadian bacon, beef, bacon, extra cheese],” said owner Steve Gounaikis.
cooked up daily.”
Well, everything at George’s Vineyard is made from scratch and prepared fresh.
That’s likely the secret behind this Northfield eatery’s popularity.
“And the garlic cheese bread is a big old staple of ours,” he continued. “That’s housemade, with fresh bread, cut, buttered and

Being chosen 2025’s Best Pizza of Southern Minnesota is an honor Gounaikis, who purchased the business from his parents Phillip and Patti four years ago, takes seriously.
“It’s a pride thing,” said Gounaikis, 41.
“We strive for consistency. If you get a group of people working here, doing it the exact way I was taught and the exact way I taught them, it’s going to turn out delicious every time.”
Gounaikis emphasizes that the dough for the cracker-style crust is prepared fresh daily.
“We do everything homemade,” he stressed. “Most places buy boxes of beef crumble but we cook our own, season it and crumble it down ourselves.

sausage, cut it, grind it, season and mix it; it’s a labor of love.”
And how about the red sauce, which accounts for at least part of the tantalizing scents wafting in the air the moment you enter the restaurant?
“Our sauce is a special recipe passed on to me from my dad,” said Gounaikis, a Northfield native who began his restaurant career at age 12, working at the predecessor to George’s Vineyard—Bill’s Pizza—before road construction necessitated a relocation well over two decades ago.
“I do all the seasonings and nobody else knows them. It’s all in my head.”
But the flavor is something ever yone who tries a George’s Vineyard pizza immediately recognizes and appreciates—even Gounaikis, who’s eaten more than a few in his lifetime.
“If I had to pick one, it might be the George’s Special [sausage, onions, green pepper],” said Gounaikis.
“I’m also a big fan of the House Supreme— and you can’t go wrong with just a plain pepperoni pizza on occasion.”
Though that proprietar y red sauce is Gounaikis’ baby, he’s supported at George’s Vineyard by his wife, Chris, along with 35 fullor part-time employees.
While Gounaikis is thrilled with the “Best of” designation for George’s Vineyard’s pizza, he reminds the restaurant also serves up pasta, gyros (available as a pizza topping, too), chicken, salads and kids’ meals.
“My favorite part about running the restaurant is interacting with the people,” said Gounaikis.

Best Boat Dealer: LaCanne’s Marine
The Southern Minnesota Scene region is blessed with a variety of local businesses and people. Among them, Nick LaCanne is the owner of LaCanne’s Marine in Faribault, which was selected as the Best Boat Dealer in the 2025 Best of Southern Minn contest.
With around 20 employees, and almost four decades of experience, LaCanne said their customer service is what sets them apart.
“Our customer ser vice cannot be beat. We have customers from all across the country enjoying our products,” LaCanne said.
For 37 years, starting back in 1988, LaCanne’s has been operating as a Marine
and Powersport sales and service company. LaCanne said a combination of the employees and customers he works with has made the business thrive throughout the years.
“We are blessed to have such an amazing staff and client relationship. I look forward to watching our business grow as my children lead us into the future,” LaCanne said.
The future looks strong, he said. But the present is wonderful, too. Currently, they have more than 1,000 clients that they serve annually.
“At LaCanne’s, you’ll find not only a friendly sales and service staff, but one of the best selections of outdoor recreational vehicles in Minnesota, LaCanne said. “We carry

LaCanne said they have options for ever y season Minnesota has to offer.
“We also offer Polaris ATVs, and Rangers, Ski-Doo snowmobiles, and Sea-Doo personal watercraft. Whether you come from Northfield, Minneapolis, or Montgomery we’re sure
you’ll find what you need. Our customers come from all over Minnesota - and even from Iowa and Wisconsin. We know the business - we’ve known it for years,” LaCanne said.
LaCanne said that experience has helped. He cited managing a familyowned business and interacting with his amazing customers as the best part of the job.
“However, managing a familyowned business can also be the most challenging part of the job, but it is a passion,” LaCanne said.
For LaCanne and his staff, they know that while they have a strong history to build on, they also share in excitement for the future.
“We are going to continue working hard to be the number one Alumacraft Dealer in the country,” LaCanne said.
The business is open six days a week from Monday through Saturday.

Best Locally Owned Specialty Shop: Daisy Blue Naturals
Founder and owner of Daisy Blue Naturals Jena Thompson just expanded her business from one store location in Albert Lea to a second n Owatonna next to the Fire Hall on Main Street this past December. She started the business 24 years ago in her kitchen as a mother to young children and a chemist by trade, hoping to create holistic and natural alternatives to products she was using in her family. It soon moved to the basement and then a 1,200-foot shed before she opened her first brick and mortar location in Albert Lea.
“When I started,” Thompson said, “it was my core purpose to make a difference in people’s lives.”
As a chemist, Jena produces her own line of products in-house and with minimal waste. With her two shops, online store and several

In recent years, especially over the last decade, there has been growing interest in more natural, holistic products. Thompson isn’t jumping on this trend; she’s been way ahead of it.
When the team at Daisy Blue Naturals say “Natural,” they mean natural. All products with the Daisy Blue logo are 100% natural, compared to many other “holistic” looking products that still have those unpronounceable ingredients.

Products include Health & Wellness items, internal and external health, bath, body, skincare and makeup, and the Owatonna Shop even hosts jewelry and home décor from Nicole Arndt. Thompson also sources other local vendors and national holistic companies to expand her offerings to everything from bars of homemade soap to crystals.
After several years in business, Thompson had another idea — to create an event surrounding her passion. Thus “Daisy Fest” was born. Held the first Saturday in September in Albert Lea’s Central Park, Daisy Fest boasts 40-50 vendors, some local and some coming from all over the nation.
She limits it to 50 vendors because she “wants it small and intimate.” Traditionally, the first 100 attendees to the free get a goodie bag. The park is full of natural and holistic health and wellness vendors, from sound healers, live music, food vendors to cash & carry, it is truly a wonderful event for anyone interested in the natural lifestyle or just looking for a fun, relaxing day in the park.

Best Windows/Siding/Roofing: Skluzacek Bros.
Afamily owned business that got its start in 1973 has been selected as this year’s Best of SoMinn award recipient for handling your roofing needs.
Skluzacek Bros. Inc. out of Faribault offers a full range of service for a wide variety of needs, which also includes gutter installation and repair, attic insulation and removal of snow and ice from your roof during the winter months.
“My Dad (Gar y Skluzacek) and uncle (Dan Skluzacek) started the company in 1973,” said Derek Skluzacek, who has been with the company for 30 years and started working with the family business when he was in high school.

The company is focused on residential roofing needs and they service a radius of about 25 miles from its base in Faribault - with much of their work in their hometown of Faribault, Northfield and Owatonna.
“We do mainly residential roofing - new and existing construction. We also do gutters, attic insulation and snow and ice removal off of roofs in the wintertime,” Derek Skluzacek said.
“We do shingles, metal roofs and everything from slate to wood shingles. Basically we do it all.”
“They (Gar y and Dan) hadn’t been in the construction business before, but they ended doing my grandfather’s barn and then they did a neighbor’s place and the business started that way.”
From those first few jobs, the business became an area leader for residential roofing under the leadership of the Skluzacek brothers. In fact, Gary Skluzacek just retired two years ago and Dan Skluzacek was affiliated with the company until his passing four years ago.
“My dad just retired two years ago,” Derek Skluzacek said. “He wanted to get 50 years in and he wanted to be 70 years old still up on the roof working. He hit those milestones and then retired.”

One of the current trends in the roofing business is with Class 4 shingles that help protect against the area’s weather and climate conditions.
“We are seeing more people going for the Class Four shingles, which are impact resistant shingles to help deal with hail and hail damage. We are seeing an uptick in the use of those shingles in the last few years,” Derek Skluzacek said. “Metal is also starting to climb up there but the price of steel is kind of hindering that a little bit right now.”
When it comes to a preferred brand of shingles, the company works extensively with Owens-Corning and Malarkey shingles
“We’ve been using these shingles for quite a few years and haven’t had any issues. They are a real good quality and haven’t had com-

“We like to go onto a job and treat the job and the work we do as if it was our own house. We want to give them a pretty easy experience so they don’t have to worry about anything,” Derek Skluzacek noted. “They know that if there is something that goes wrong with their roof, we’ve been in business for 52 years, they know that we will stand behind our roofs and they will be able to get a hold of us if they do have any issues with it.
