The National Farmers’ Bank is one of the 25 National Historic Landmarks in Minnesota and added to the “11 Can’t Miss Stops On A Tour Of America’s Hidden Architecture Gems” because of its premiere example of Prairie School Architecture. The bank was designed in the early 1900s by Louis Sullivan who was known as the “father of the skyscraper” and Frank Lloyd Wright’s mentor. Being the first and most famous of Sullivan’s “jewel box” banks it features gold leaf arches, stained glass windows, 2-ton electroliers, and murals depicting farm life in Steele County. Now an operating Wells Fargo, the bank is located across from Central Park in Historic Downtown. Self-guided and guided group tours.

Experience what life was like in Owatonna during the late 19th century at the Village of Yesteryear. The 19-structure village includes an 1868 mansion, historic schoolhouse, general store, log cabins, and blacksmith shop. Stop in next door to the Steele County History Center to view rotating exhibits about the history of the region. In July, experience the Extravaganza - an afternoon of music, food, and historic demonstrations in the village. Self-guided and guided group tours.

Take a stroll through time walking on the streets of Historic Downtown Owatonna, a Nationally Registered Historic District. The buildings reflect three significant periods: the last quarter of the nineteenth century, first three decades of the twentieth century, and the period from 1930-1950s. The historic district contains a total of 75 contributing buildings and one contributing park. Use the Historic Walking Tour Brochure as a guide while you explore the unique architecture of downtown. Approximately 10,635 orphaned, abandoned, or abused children were sent to Owatonna between 1886 and 1945 to live at the Minnesota State Public School for Dependent and Neglected Children. The historic campus is now called the West Hills Campus and is home to the Owatonna Arts Center, Little Theatre of Owatonna, City offices, and the only known Orphanage Museum in the nation. The museum was founded by a former “State-Schooler” to remember the stories and glimpse into the lives of the children who have called this their home. Explore the Museum, historic Cottage 11, the Children’s Cemetery and an audio tour. Whether you schedule a guided group tour or choose a self-guided visit, you will find unforgettable history awaiting you.

Designed by Jacobson & Jacobson, the original municipal power plant was built in 1855 as a steam power plant. Additions to the building have kept the original style of brick with arched windows. The power plant was damaged in 2010 when the Straight River flooded. The 12 feet of water in the building’s basement rendered the generators inoperable. The Owatonna Public Utilities sought to repurpose the

Enjoy an evening of entertainment at the Steele County History Center during their Americana Showcase (past musicians include Charlie Parr and Dave Simonett!). Have a smokin’ good time sampling award-winning barbecue and listening to live blues bands at Smokin’ in Steele BBQ & Blues Festival. Watch the downtown come alive with music from competitive high school marching bands during the Harry Wenger Marching Band Festival. Warm up with hot beverages and Christmas carols by the carolers in Central Park after the Lighted Holiday Parade.

Downtown murals
On your stroll through Historic Downtown you’ll come across several Street murals painted by local artists, depicting Owatonna’s history and heritage. There are five murals to find: the Little Red Schoolhouse Mural and Main Street Mural at Pocket Park, the Owatonna Gateway Mural on the side of Straight River Sports & Fitness, the Fire Hall Mural on historic Fireman’s Hall and Princess Owatonna Mural on the side of Owatonna Shoe. Also look for 11 “mini murals” of owls hidden throughout the 75 historic buildings in downtown.

Recreation & Family Fun Conquer the Trails Owatonna’s numerous multi-use trails will keep an avid runner or cyclist occupied for days. The 18th Street Trail connects to Kaplan’s Woods Parkway. Kaplan’s Woods offers 225 acres for hiking and jogging, and 6 miles of mountain bike trails. Ride the multi-use Buxton and Muckle trails along the Straight River through beautiful city parks. Visit the north side of town by venturing on the North Straight River Parkway paved path.
Experience The Water See the heart of Owatonna from the seat of a kayak on the Straight River. This section of the designated State Water Trail is perfect for an early summer noon afternoon paddle. Pick up a trail guide along the way at the Owatonna Area Chamber of Commerce and Tourism. Spend the afternoon fishing off the docks, lounging on the beach, or paddling around Lake Kohlmier or Lake Chase.
Jump In On a hot summer day, cool off at the River Springs Water Park, featuring two water slides, a lazy river, and a climbing wall. Take in the sun at Lake Kohlmier Beach and spend the afternoon floating on the lake. The Great Serengeti Indoor Water Park at the Holiday Inn & Suites offers year-round aquatic fun. Enjoy slides, play areas, water basketball, and a lazy river in this Africanthemed indoor water park.

Monkey Around There is nothing better than playing a round of disc golf with your friends at Mineral Springs Park, or participating in a favorite Owatonna pastime by playing pickleball at the Morehouse Park courts. Bring the whole family for a round of mini-golf at Water’s Edge Miniature Golf Course.
Fall In Love Grab a blanket and have a romantic picnic next to the Morehouse Bridge while watching the Straight River flow by. Rent a canoe with your sweetheart at Rice Lake State Park and float on the lake for an afternoon.
Go Fish If you’re looking to catch something, look no further than Steele county! Panfish, bass, even walleyes can be found in Lake Kohlmier and Beaver Lake, or take on the challenge and mystery of river fishing on the Straight River!

Hit the course For the passionate or amateur golfer, Owatonna has two 18-hole courses. Brooktree Golf Course, an 18-hole championship public course, is perfect for a late morning tee off. Also check out the Owatonna Country Club, an 18-hole private course with a “call for playing privileges� guest policy. For a 9-hole public par 3 course, play around at the Havana Hills Golf Course.
For the camper Roast your marshmallows under the stars and enjoy the great outdoors! Nestled along the straight river is Riverview Campground, a Good Sam Park, which includes a heated swimming pool and a miniature golf course. Hope Oak Knoll Campground, also a Good Sam Park, is a quiet and shady place to camp. Relax with a game of horseshoes and Hope Oak Knolls game room. Enjoy seasonal camping under the tall hardwoods at Rice lake State Park.

Skate on the River Experience a favorite tradition by skating on the straight river which was featured in explorer Minnesota’s great outdoor ice skating rinks. Bring along your hockey stick & puck for a game of hockey on the Morehouse Park Chalet and enjoy the frozen river. Morehouse Park hosts family bonfires on Saturday starting at 5:30 pm.
Sledding The West Hills Complex off State Avenue offers excellent hills for sledding, so grab your friends and family, bundle up and head out for hours of fun.
Fat Biking Don’t wait till the ground thaws, go fat biking on 6 miles of snowy mountain bike trails at Kaplan’s Woods.
Snowmobiling Have the need for speed? The Steele county trail system includes 175 miles of groomed snowmobile
trails connecting with 5 adjoining counties. check out the trails at Rice lake State Park for a winter ride in the woods.

Ski And Snowshoe Head out on your winter wonderland adventure on the groomed trails from Morehouse Park to Kaplan Woods and Rice Lake State Park. Rent cross country skis at the Morehouse Chalet or snowshoes at Rice Lake State Park.
Hok Skis Take to the trails with a new twist to an old tradition. Hok skiing, first introduced in Central Asia, brings the best of both cross country skiing and snowshoeing to the winter playground of Southern Minnesota. Head out to Kaplan’s Woods or on the Straight River to climb hills with ease and slide down with grace in groomed and ungroomed conditions. Put on your favorite winter boots and head down to Straight River Sports & Fitness and rent Hok skis for the whole family!
Bird Watching The county offers excellent opportunities for bird watching, with sightings of more than 200 species recorded. For information on bird watching, contact the MnDNR Area Wildlife Office at 507-455-5841.
Bold & Cold Owatonna stays alive during the winter season with fun events like Christmas in the Village. Bold & Cold is a week-long winter celebration with events and activities that are designed to highlight the Minnesota psyche of “cold noses and warm hearts”.

While you’re there check out the local fish aquarium and native and exotic animal display. Get hands-on learning at the Village of Yesteryear and discover rich history at the Orphanage Museum.
Hang out and catch some air at the Bike and Skate Park. Play a round of disc golf at the River Rock Disc Golf Course in Mineral Springs Park. Tackle the mini golf course with the kids at Water’s Edge Miniature Golf Course. Bring on the family competition with a game of bowling, some arcade games, or laser tag at Spare Time Entertainment. Run around the playground at Fairgrounds Park, a local favorite.
For The Movie Lover Take in a movie and lounge in the heated recliners at Northwoods Cinema 10. Go to the movies on a Tuesday for just $5 (all day). Catch an outdoor movie during the summer months in Central Park downtown. Take the kids for a free movie at the Owatonna Public Library for family friendly movies on the third Monday of the month at 6 p.m. during their “Movies for All” programming. The City of Owatonna maintains over 811 acres of parkland throughout 33 parks and has over 17 miles of trails. These parks provide citizens and visitors of all ages with a variety of year-round outdoor activities. Our parks encourage people to connect with nature and each other, creating a greater sense of community. Known as “The City of Friendliness and Beautiful Parks”, Owatonna has recreation and open space along its scenic waterways throughout the city. Many different amenities are available. Our Parks and Recreation Department is committed to maintaining excellent facilities and offering opportunities for great experiences in our parks and on our trails.

Jaycee Park Jaycee Park is the perfect destination for your next birthday party celebration or family gettogether. Nestled between Main Street and Rice Lake Street, Jaycee Park features a picnic shelter, sand volleyball court and play equipment. A thank you is in order to the Owatonna Jaycees for their enormous contributions to the initial and continued development of the park.
Manthey Park A community favorite, Manthey Park has been newly redone and has played host to many family gatherings over the years. With two large picnic shelters, tennis courts, a basketball court, softball and baseball fields, play equipment, hiking trails and a large open grassy area, families can spend some true quality time at this park.

Morehouse Park Bask in the beauty of the Straight River at Morehouse Park. Featuring the Warsinski Chalet, a picnic shelter, play equipment, horseshoe courts and a softball field. Residents can also take advantage of sand volleyball and a skate park. In the spring and summer months, many families visit the park to feed the ducks and geese, fish or walk on the Kaplan’s Woods Parkway.
Medford Parks Canoe and kayak enthusiasts can enter the Straight River through the landing access available at Straight River Park, while the sports buff can enjoy the volleyball courts, tennis courts, a basketball court and baseball field. Perfect for reunions and gatherings, the park also features pavilions, a playground, kiddie pool as well as a large pool with a diving board.
Blooming Prairie Parks Central Park and Victory Field Park are two that residents frequently visit. Home to the Old Fashioned Fourth of July festivities, Central Park features a pavilion, gazebo and play equipment. Across from the high school, Victory Field Park offers two softball fields and a tennis court in addition to a pavilion and playground. Other parks in Blooming Prairie are East Side Park, Green Gardens Park and the Fire Department Park.

Opening in the fall of 2015 was the Technical Academies of Minnesota — public, tuition-free charter school for students in grades 7-12. The academy will employ licensed teachers and bring hands-on, project-based experiential learning to students. The project-based public charter school will focus on career and technical schools. Libraries
For more than 100 years, the citizens of Steele County have been served by the Owatonna Public Library, located at 105 N Elm Ave with a branch of the library located in the City Center building, 138 Highway Ave S in Blooming Prairie. The library offers a wide range of services to adults and children, including wireless Internet, public computers and copiers. • Children’s Services has materials and programs for children ages 13 and under. Kids can find their favorite stories, authors and books at the library or e-books through the library website. There are also DVDs, books on CD, toys, and puzzles available for check out. Computers are available where they can type a paper or play with the best computer programs available. There is also a specially designed play area. • Adult Services has the traditional books, including large print, plus magazines, compact discs, DVDs, BluRay and books on CD. The library’s website – www. owatonna.info – lists numerous databases available to library cardholders. Library-goers can also download e-books, audiobooks, magazines, music and
independent films with an Owatonna Public Library card. If there is something not available in Owatonna, interlibrary loan will bring it in from across the state. • The local history collection includes a variety of resources about local history or tracing genealogy. Included are local newspapers from 1868 to the present, city and county directories, family histories and biographies, cemetery indexes, Ancestry.com, and the Steele County Historical Society digital photo archive. • Special programs and events are held throughout the year, such as story time for children, book discussions and author programs for adults, a twicemonthly movie showing, and summer reading program. • Hours: The Owatonna Public Library is open Monday – Thursday 9 am to 8 pm, Friday and Saturday 9 am to 5 pm, and Sunday 1-5 pm (October through April) The Blooming Prairie Branch is open Monday – Wednesday 10 am to 6 pm, Thursday 10 am to 8 pm, Friday 10 am to 5 pm, and Saturday 10 am to 1 pm. Horizons of Health Care As Steele County has grown, so has the need for quality health care for its residents and those in surrounding communities. Fortunately, the cooperation between the Owatonna Hospital, part of Allina Health, and Mayo Clinic Health System in Owatonna has ensured quality health care in the community.
Owatonna Hospital The Owatonna Hospital’s new facility opened its doors in 2009, bringing a new patient care experience to Steele County. Owatonna Hospital has served the local community since 1901, when it was founded to serve a city of 5,000. Today, the hospital has grown to meet the needs of more than 26,000 Owatonna residents as well as the Steele County area. The current facility features 43 beds and employs more than 300. Owatonna Hospital offers inpatient and outpatient orthopedic, general, urology, plastic, ENT and ophthalmologic surgical services; inpatient mental health; birthing center; emergency medicine; and rehabilitation services through Courage Kenny® Rehabilitation Institute. The Joint Commission accredits Owatonna Hospital. 44

Mayo Clinic Health System in Owatonna In 1948, two medical pioneers — Dr. Albert J. Olson and Dr. Franklin C. Anderson — started the Owatonna Clinic on the principle that the physician serves the community both in the preservation and the restoration of good health. For the past 60-plus years, the clinic has grown from its original office on Main Street to its current location on the 26th Street. In 1997, the clinic joined Mayo Clinic Health System. In 2011, the Owatonna Clinic changed its name to Mayo Clinic Health System. The name change is part of a broader effort to bring even more of Mayo Clinic to patients locally. Mayo Clinic Health System has become a comprehensive medical clinic offering outpatient and specialty services.
The staff includes a variety of specialty fields, including family medicine, internal medicine, general surgery, obstetrician/gynecology, dermatology and many others. The clinic also offers comprehensive laboratory, diagnostic, pain management and infusion therapy services. Mayo Clinic Health System also offers a full-service optical shop. In addition to the clinic staff physicians, Mayo Clinic Outreach physician consultants come from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester to provide patients with care in cardiology, oncology, rheumatology and neurology. Mayo also operates a facility at 405 E. Main in Blooming Prairie, which is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Fridays, with pharmacy hours from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
