Owatonna: Jewel of the Prairie For hundreds of years before the arrival of the first white settlers, Native Americans camped on the banks of a river they called “Ouitunya,” which means “straight.” Today, the major river that runs through Steele County, Minn., is still called the Straight River, and the name of the county’s principal city, “Owatonna,” bears the echo of the name of the river that flows through it.

Legend has it that “Princess Owatonna,” the daughter of Chief Wabena, became ill during a winter of many sorrows. Her father had heard of the curing magic waters known as “Minnewaucan” and advised his daughter to drink of those waters.

The young princess followed her father’s advice and drank from the rich mineral water bubbling from the springs and was restored back to health. According to legend, the healing waters Population are those of the Owatonna: 25,421 Straight River in Steele County: 36,322 Mineral Springs. Source: 2012 U.S. Census Since 1933, a statue of Princess Owatonna has stood in Mineral Springs Park to mark the legend.

While the historical accuracy of the legend may be doubtful, the story speaks of how the beautiful tree-filled city of Owatonna, built on the shore of the Straight River, has attracted people to the area for years and of why it continues to draw people to the community.

But don’t take just our word for it.

In July 2009, Money Magazine, a national financial magazine, named Owatonna as one of the top 100 small towns in the United States to live in — and the only small town in Greater Minnesota that made the list.

Editors of Money said of the city: “This selfproclaimed ‘Jewel of the Prairie’ — surrounded by tall meadows, wildflowers and farmland — is full of people who love the great outdoors.

Hiking, snowmobiling, and cross-country skiing are popular in the city’s 24 parks, as is fishing and canoeing at Lake Kohlmier.”

Located at the crossroads of Interstate 35, U.S. Highway 14 and U.S. Highway 218, Owatonna sits at the center of southern Minnesota.

The Twin Cities lie just a 60-minute drive to the north, with Rochester just 45 miles to the east and Mankato 45 miles to the west. Its location has made Owatonna a hub of the Interstate 35 corridor and a community that has attracted business and industry, as well as people who enjoy the outdoors.

City government The mayor and city council members are the elected leaders of the city government. They are elected to four-year terms with four members elected in November of even-numbered years.

Meetings are held at 7 p.m. on the first and third Tuesday of each month at 540 West Hills Circle.

The city council makes all policy decisions in matters such as legislation, zoning, budgets and improvement projects. The council hires the city attorney and city administrator, and confirms appointments to the city’s boards, commissions and department head positions.

Owatonna Public Library is located at 105 N. Elm Ave., at the corner of Broadway and Elm. Hours are Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Library is closed Sundays from May to September. The phone number is 444-2460.

Licenses

• Auto: Auto and driver’s licenses can be renewed at the Drivers and Vehicle License office at 1825 S. Elm Ave. The office is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon. Phone number is 451-2040.

• Road test: Driver’s license tests are given at the National Guard Armory, 2323 W. Bridge St. For information or appointments, call the Faribault driver’s license office at (507) 332-7985 to speak with an examiner.

• Marriage: Marriage licenses can be obtained at the Steele County Recorder’s Office at the County Administration Building, 630 Florence Ave., Owatonna. 444-7450.

Transportation

Steele County Area Transit (SCAT) offers Dial-a-Ride service throughout Steele County on three 18-passenger, fully accessible mini-buses. SCAT began a fixed daily route in 2012, making stops at Skyline Gardens, Owatonna Hospital, Colonial Manor, WalMart, Cash Wise, West Hills, AmericInn/Applebee’s, Hy-Vee, Cedar Place Apartments, Owatonna Community Education, Owatonna Public Library, Cedar Valley Services, St. Paul Place, the corner of 3rd Avenue and 28th Street NE, and the Workforce Center.

The SCAT bus costs $1.75 per ride for a ticket or $2 for walk-ons.

A 24-hour advance notice is encouraged. Tickets can be purchased at the Steele County Auditor’s Office, Cash Wise Grocery Store and Hy-Vee. Development The City of Owatonna has had an Economic Development Authority since 1992, and the EDA oversees a wide range of development initiatives from the sale of industrial property, financial packaging and marketing, revolving loan fund and Tax Increment Financing.

In the years since, the EDA — along with the Owatonna Area Chamber of Commerce and Tourism, the Owatonna Business Incubator — has created an economic development partnership that seeks to meet the development needs of retail business and industries.

Weather: Hot, Cold and Everything in Between

innesota is famous for its colorful and varied seasons, and Owatonna is no exception.

July is the warmest month, though the average temperatures for the month — a high of 82 degrees and a low of 62 degrees — make it ideal for enjoying the outdoors.

August is the wettest month, averaging 4.74 inches of rain.

The record high temperature for Owatonna is 102 degrees, set most recently on July 14, 1995, and six times prior. The record low for the summer months is 33 degrees, set June 1, 1964 — technically, still spring.

But June’s record low temperature for the summer months pales by comparison to the record low for the entire year. On Jan. 9, 1977, the temperature dropped to 35 degrees below zero — the lowest in Owatonna since records have been kept.

The average temperatures for January are higher than that though.

The average high for the month is 22.5 degrees and the average low is 4.7 degrees. Snowfall each year averages 42.2 inches. Record snowfall in Owatonna was set May 2, 2013, with 15.5 inches.

Four attractions in particular — the Steele County History Center, the Village of Yesteryear, the Louis H. Sullivan National Farmers’ Bank and the Minnesota State Public School Orphanage Museum — are must-see stops for visitors and residents who wish to get a glimpse into the past of Owatonna.

Village of Yesteryear and Steele County History Center The Village of Yesteryear, operated by the Steele County Historical Society, is a setting of 16 structures where visitors can experience what life was like in Owatonna and Steele County at the turn of the 20th Century.

There are two log cabins, railroad station and a caboose from Steele County dating back to the 1850’s, general store/ post office, fire station, farm machinery building, blacksmith shop, country school, Dunnell mansion built in 1868, and the St. Wenceslaus of Moravia Church built in 1891. The buildings are furnished according to the time they were built and are connected by a boardwalk. Some of Owatonna’s gems at the village are listed below:

The Dunnell House This Italianate-style home was built by Mark Hill Dunnell in 1868 and 1869 and was originally located at 357 E. Main Street in Owatonna.

The house was sold to Pillsbury Military Academy in 1940 and was used as a cadet’s dorm, infirmary, piano classroom and residence.

When the house was scheduled to be demolished for a parking lot, a group of citizens saved it, which led to its preservation and restoration by the Steele County Historical Society.

The house was moved to its present location in January 1969 in two sections.

The Blacksmith Shop

Given in 1991 by the Styndl family, the Blacksmith Shop operated by Frank Styndl, was located east of Bixby and built in 1896. Bench vice, drill press, forge, fire pot, trip hammer and numerous tools, some made by Frank, are exhibited, as well as examples of plow shares and horseshoes. There is often a working exhibit here during special events.

The Town Hall

The Town Hall first served as the Owatonna Town Hall in the late 1850s, according to the last two residents and an early assessor. It was originally located in downtown Owatonna. The building houses artifacts that relate to the county civic development, townships, government and business.

The Saco Church

The Church of St. Wenceslaus of Moravia was the first building moved to the Village site in 1962. The church was built seven miles southwest of Owatonna in 1891 to serve the Czech community of Moravia, later, after the arrival of the railroad, called Saco. After the church closed in 1952, it was given to the Society and moved with Page 14

all its furnishings, altar and the 14 Stations of the Cross. The church is available to rent for small weddings.

Personalized tours of the 15 buildings are available at 1:30 p.m., Tuesdays through Sundays, May 1 through Sept. 30. Visitors should allow an hour and a half for the tour. Call the office at 451-1420 for current tour pricing. Special rates and times are available for groups by appointment.

The Steele County Historical Society offices are located in the History Center at 1700 Austin Road. The accessible center features exhibits and offers historically related programs throughout the year. The History Center is open: • Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Louis H. Sullivan National Farmers’ Bank

The year was 1906. The National Farmers’ Bank — the largest bank in the city — had outgrown its offices on the first floor of a 40-year-old building in downtown Owatonna. Carl Bennett, then vice president of the bank, commissioned famed architect Louis H. Sullivan to design a “true and lasting work of art” to be the home of the bank.

Sullivan, called the “father of modernism” and considered by many to be the creator of the modern skyscraper, had designed many buildings in downtown Chicago and was credited as being the inspiration to, if not the father of, the Chicago group of architects who have come to be known as the Prairie School.

Construction on the new bank began in April 1907 and was completed in 1908 for $125,000.

The new facility was opened for business on July 14, 1908. The building — located on the northeast corner of Broadway Street and Cedar Avenue in downtown Owatonna, across from the historic Central Park — is an architectural symphony inside and out.

The red brick structure with green terra cotta bands features two large arches displaying stained glass windows designed by Louis J. Millet. Inside are several murals by Oskar Gross and a “poem of colors,” featuring more than 200 shades, primarily blues and greens, intricate terra cotta and gold-leaf detailing. Additional details include four immense cast iron electroliers, each weighing 2.25 tons, and an ornate sculptured clock.

On Jan. 7, 1976, the building was recognized as a National Historic Landmark for its architectural significance. The United States Postal Service commemorated the building in 1981, putting the image of the bank on a postage stamp.

Visitors are welcome to view the detailed work of the bank during regular banking hours. Just inside the west entrance to the bank on Cedar Avenue, visitors can pick up a printed selfguided tour memo that offers additional notes on the history and architecture, as well as the current functions of the bank.

The lobby is open from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays.

State Public School Orphanage Museum In 1885, the Minnesota Legislature created the Minnesota State Public School for Dependent and Neglected Children. Owatonna was chosen as the site for this new state orphanage, which operated from 1886 to 1945. During this time period, 10,635 children passed through the institution. Today, the campus is known as the West Hills Complex.

The grounds were originally housed on 160 acres and grew to 329 acres by 1937, with 42 acres designated as the campus and 287 acres for farm cultivation. At the height of its existence, the school housed 500 children in 16 cottages. Other buildings included a nursery, hospital, school, gymnasium, laundry and superintendent and employee residences. The school had its own power plant, greenhouse, ice house, root cellar, cemetery and complete farm operation—making it virtually self-sufficient.

The main building was built in 1886 for $50,000 and housed the superintendent’s office, staff offices, a reception room, the library, a chapel, dining halls, industrial departments and living quarters for small boys. The cemetery, where 198 children are buried, is located in the southwest corner of the campus and named crosses mark 151 burials where children only had their number. A memorial boardwalk lines the old cinder path near the cemetery.

The orphanage closed in 1945. For the next 25 years, the school provided academic and vocational training for the educable mentally disabled. The Owatonna State School, as it was known,

closed in 1970. For four years, the buildings and grounds were unused. In 1974, the City of Owatonna purchased the property to house its City Administrative Offices and other related city facilities.

Beginning in 1992, Harvey and Maxine Ronglien initiated efforts to restore the State Public School, educate others of its history, and remember the children who were placed there. Harvey was a Ward of the State at the State Public School for 11 years.

The Minnesota State Public School Orphanage Museum is located on the first floor of the City Administration Building. The museum — which takes visitors though the 60-year orphanage era, the 25-year history of the State School, and the city’s purchase of the property in 1974 — contains photos, artifacts and stories of the children who lived this history. One feature is a 10-minute silent film shot in the 1930s with modern narration by Harvey.

Visitors may also take the Outside Audio Tour, a seasonal, six station tour of the grounds, and tour Cottage 11—a restored boys’ cottage—which was built in 1923 and housed 30 to 35 boys ages 6 to 14. Cottage 11 restoration was complete in 2009 and gives visitors a glimpse of what life was like for the children who lived within its walls.

In December 2011, the former orphanage campus was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a Historic District.

This site has earned the highest level of national and international significance.

Frank Gehry’s Winton Guest House Frank Gehry was no stranger to Minnesota before the project with the Wintons began.

At Victor Gruen and Associates, Gehry was placed on the design team for the Southdale Mall in Edina. Gehry met members of the Dayton family of Dayton’s department stores, and through them he met Walker Art Center director Martin Friedman and his wife, Mildred (Mickey), the Walker’s design curator.

At the time he was designing the guest house, Gehry cited an artist and a fellow architect as providing inspiration for the initial design Giorgio Morandi and Philip Johnson.

The Italian artist Morandi’s still-life studies of bottles, boxes, cups, and vases link strongly to Gehry’s one-room building concept, and particularly to the unique design of the Winton Guest House. As Gehry told author Barbara Isenberg during an interview for her 2009 book, “Conversations with Frank Gehry:” “When I discovered the pictures of Giorgio Morandi, I just went nuts because Morandi was drawing bottles which were essentially one-room buildings and creating villages of bottles. I liked that”

Gehry also recalls Philip Johnson saying that all the best buildings in history were one-room buildings like Chartres Cathedral. The attention given to the diverse architectural elements in the guest house suggests an artistic sensibility in architecture that is intriguing from every angle.

The Wintons envisioned a space that their grandchildren would love to visit.

This gave Gehry the freedom to design the house with playfulness and joy in mind. With a robust budget and utmost confidence from his clients, Gehry first included a log cabin second story in the first model in honor of Mike Winton’s generational family lumber business.

He then brought in forms of different shapes and materials, all rotating around a central tower, ultimately refining them into a sculptural object that from the terrace of the Johnson house reads as sculpture with no visible windows or doors.

Gehry addressed the challenge of building adjacent to a Philip Johnson masterpiece with great respect. The view of the guest house from the Johnson patio included no windows, emphasizing the building’s sculptural presence.

This visual connection between the houses was not always part of the plan, however. As Gehry said, “I didn’t want to mess around with Uncle Philip’s baby. I’m sure he was horrified when he heard I was doing it. So I decided to go on the other side of the hedge where we could create a separate zone.”

Gehry had landscape architect Peter Walker keep the hedge between the buildings ensuring that the guest house would look “inevitable” and that the clients would find “a little jewel on the other side of the hedge.”

But the existing 15-feet-tall by 4-feet-wide hedge prevented the dialogue that the Wintons sought, so they decided to take it down.

Mike initially wanted to remove only a portion of the hedge, but when the backhoe arrived on site in 1986, Penny told them to remove it all and retreated to the Johnson house. She came out after the hedge was gone and immediately recognized the powerful energy at work, calling up Gehry and saying, “The houses are singing to each other.”

In 2011 the house made its way from Orono, Minn., to Owatonna.

Agriculture

A tradition in Owatonna and greater Steele County, agriculture is the base upon which the area grew to prominence, and is still one of its greatest strengths.

It would be difficult, if not impossible, to over-emphasize the importance that farming and the agriculture industry has played in the development of Owatonna and Steele County.

Indeed, in 1853 — a year before the city of Owatonna was founded and two years before Steele County itself was established — the first land claims were filed and the first sod was turned over to ready it for planting in the spring. It is, therefore, hardly an exaggeration to say that agriculture is the oldest and longlasting industry here.

Most of the settlers in those early days were farmers, living in the rural areas of Steele County.

In 1856, while just a little more than 300 lived in the city of Owatonna, rural Steele County boasted more than 2,500 residents with most of them living and working on

farms. According to an early history of Owatonna, agricultural developments kept pace with those in town.

At first, farming was on a subsistence level, but within a few years, poultry, hogs and cattle were being raised in increasing numbers.

Early on, businessmen in Owatonna began to develop businesses in response to agricultural needs.

In 1865, for example, Thomas Howe and Michael Lowth began to manufacture grain drills and seeders. Eventually, the company would be known as the Owatonna Manufacturing Company and, as it is known today, Mustang Manufacturing.

The story is not unique.

In fact, many of the industries that still exist in Owatonna today originally were established and grew to meet the needs

of farmers in and around Steele County — industries like the Owatonna Canning Company (now Lakeside Foods) and the Gandy Corporation.

The now famous Louis H. Sullivandesigned bank in downtown Owatonna, now Wells Fargo Bank, originally was built to house the National Farmers Bank.

Even C.I. Buxton, who helped take what is now Federated Insurance Companies from a fledgling company to the insurance giant that it is today, got his start in an agriculturally based business as a partner in the Buxton & McClintock Implement Company. And in those early days, the Federated was known as the Retail Implement Dealers Mutual Fire Insurance Company.

The number of farms and those in the agricultural industry has declined here since those early days, just as it has in the vast majority of the country. According to figures from the Minnesota Department of Agriculture, there are 1,031 on-farm jobs in Steele County, while the number of non-farm jobs in the county stands at 24,579 jobs.

Still, agriculture plays an important and even vital role in the local economy.

According to the state ag department, in 2008 (the last year for which figures are available) Steele County’s agricultural marketing was worth just over $220 million.

There are 816 farms in Steele County. Crops make up 61 percent of the agricultural industry in the county and livestock the remaining 39 percent, according to the MDA. The top crops are corn for grain (123,761 acres), soybeans (80,369 acres) and vegetables harvested for sale (9,441 acres), according to the MDA. Hogs make up the largest livestock sector in the county (48 percent), followed by poultry (23 percent), dairy (21 percent) and cattle (8 percent).

Several companies that had their birth here in Steele County — Viracon, Jostens, J-C Press, Truth Hardware, Wenger Corporation, Owatonna Tool Company (now Bosch Automotive Solutions), Gopher Sport, Owatonna Canning Company (now a part of Lakeside Foods) and Uber Glove Company among them — have gone on to establish national and international clientele.

Other companies that were started elsewhere soon moved to Owatonna and now call the city home. Take, for example, Federated Insurance Companies. Federated, originally named the Minnesota Mutual Fire Insurance Company, started modestly in New Ulm in 1904 and grew stronger after moving to Owatonna in 1910, eventually becoming an industry giant. Today, it is a Fortune 1000 company.

In 1948, two medical pioneers — Dr. Albert J. Olson and Dr. Franklin C.

Anderson — started the Owatonna Clinic on the principle that the physician serves the community both in the preservation and the restoration of good health. For the past 60-plus years, the clinic has grown from its original office on Main Street to its current location on the 26th Street.

In 1997, the clinic joined Mayo Clinic Health System.

In 2011, the Owatonna Clinic changed its name to Mayo Clinic Health System.

Services for and from Seniors Senior citizens play a vital role in Owatonna, with many continuing to remain active in organizations and volunteer efforts both in the city and throughout the county.

Owatonna has many opportunities and services for seniors.

Grandparents for Education

Grandparents for Education is a program of volunteers designed to provide schools and school children access to caring supportive actual and honorary grandparents and to provide opportunities for these volunteers to engage in meaningful activities in a school setting.

Grandparents for Education brings experience and knowledge, and serve as role models as well as bringing another facet of the community to support education. This organization enhances cross-generational partnerships through active involvement in schools leading toward student success and safety.

Grandparents for Education started its first year in the Owatonna school district during in 2009-2010 with 26 volunteers.

The year closed logging more than 1,400 hours and having 50

volunteers. It has been growing ever since. The 2010-2011 school year the organization logged well over 3,000 volunteer hours in the Owatonna Schools. This year St. Mary’s Elementary school was added to the organization.

A principal’s comment: “Grandparents for Education has done so much to support what we do. It’s hard to imagine that there ever was a time you weren’t here.”

A volunteer’s comment: “Thank you for Grandparents for Education. Joining the organization gave me the push to volunteer.

The mission of SeniorPlace is to involve, enrich and empower adults 50 years old and older to live as independently as possible in our communities.

From the first public school classes conducted in a crude pole and branch-covered structure in the summer of 1855 to the wide variety of public and private educational facilities and resources available today, Owatonna has a long history of offering the finest education to all ages.

And the effort is working.

Owatonna Senior High School provides students a multitude of course offerings from Advance Placement courses in the core areas to technology, foreign languages and agriculture. OHS consistently has students receiving commendation from the National Merit Scholarship Program.

Parks and Trails

A

place to picnic and play games, to walk and run, to listen to concerts or watch a ball game, to ski or skate, or just to enjoy the beauty of nature — they all can be found in Owatonna’s parks and trails.

The City of Owatonna has long been admired for its many beautiful parks. The city’s Park and Recreation Department currently maintains more than 700 acres of park land in 24 different city parks.

The parks range from several neighborhood parks, which are less than a half-acre, to the Kaplan’s Woods Parkway, which is 225 acres.

Perhaps the best known park is the 48-acre Mineral Springs Park, which has been maintained by the city since 1877.

Originally known as the site of the healing mineral springs, the site now includes two picnic shelters, play equipment, horseshoe courts, sand volleyball and picnic sites. It also is the home of the statue of Princess Owatonna.

The oldest of Owatonna parks is the downtown Central Park, which was designated as a public square in the original plat of the city. Today, the park features benches, picnic tables, a large fountain in the center of the park and the community stage, which was built as a 2004 Sesquicentennial project. Along the Straight River, Morehouse Park has long been the site of outdoor ice-skating in Owatonna. During winter months the park boasts five lighted outdoor hockey rinks and the river is also maintained for skating. Other amenities include the Warsinski Chalet, picnic shelter, play equipment, picnic sites, horseshoe courts, softball field, canoe access, sand volleyball and a skate park for in-line skating and skate boards.

Dartt’s Park includes two tennis courts, a baseball field with spectator seating and a softball field among its amenities. Four additional softball fields with spectator seating are located at the Fairgrounds Park.

Two of the largest parks are Kaplan’s Woods Parkway and the Leo Rudolph Nature Reserve.

Kaplan’s Woods includes trails for hiking, jogging, skiing, biking and rollerblading, picnic shelter and picnic sites. The park includes the 35acre Lake Kohlmier, which includes a swimming beach, bath house, fishing piers, canoes and paddle boats available for rental and a boat launch ramp and dock.

The 57-acre Leo Rudolph Nature Reserve

includes hiking and picnic site. It is being developed to include numerous varieties of prairie grasses and wildflowers.

Lake Chase Park

In 2006 the City of Owatonna acquired a parcel of land of which will be part of a larger regional park in the future as funding for development becomes available. The 8 acre park includes a small spring fed lake. Currently development has been limited but with development funding implementation of the park master plan will be done. Initial development includes a park entrance for vehicles, unimproved parking lot, picnic tables, wood chipped trails, shore access for fishing and portable restrooms. This lake is managed by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources for fishing. Access point for Lake Chase Park is 1915 State Ave. N.W. Park amenities include picnic tables, portable restrooms, wood chipped trails, shore access for fishing and vehicle parking.

Trail system Owatonna’s multiple-use trail system has been created to provide a variety of recreational opportunities for city residents and visitors.

The city council has adopted a plan to bring more trails to Owatonna as funding becomes available.

Buxton Trail The Buxton Trail begins at North Street traveling adjacent to Maple Creek and winding its way through Dartts Park, Brooktree Golf Course and Mineral Springs Park, before reaching its conclusion on the city’s eastern edge.

The Buxton Trail, dedicated in 1998 recognizes the four contributions and success of three generations of Buxtons, men who devoted their lives and careers to building Federated Insurance Companies into a substantial national business organization.

In doing so, they had a significant impact on the community where they were born, reared and spent their lives. The Buxton Trail serves as a reminder of that positive impact.

Cashman Crossing The Cashman Crossing of the Straight River was completed in 1997, providing easy access from the popular Kaplan’s Woods Parkway to Walter H. Gainey Park and Prairie Park.

Thanks to the generous gift of $235,000 from the estate of Mrs. Walter H. Gainey, formerly Patricia Cashman, this 200-footlong by 12-footwide bridge connects Kaplan’s Woods Parkway with Lemond Road. The donation also funded construction of a handicapped-accessible playground, rest room and shelter, with seating for 80, in Gainey Park.

Mrs. Gainey was born and reared in Owatonna, and it was her wish to enhance the community while honoring her husband and parents. Her gifts are dedicated to the memory of her husband, Walter H. Gainey, and to her parents, Michael Richard and Mary Quinn Cashman, in recognition of their leadership and contributions to the early growth of Owatonna.

Kaplan’s Woods Parkway Kaplan’s Woods Parkway offers a multitude of outdoor recreational opportunities including cycling, in-line skating, swimming, fishing, cross-country skiing and nature walks.

This 225-acre park was dedicated in 1987. Formerly Kaplan’s Woods State Park, the area was acquired by the city in 1963. As a result of the generosity of the Owatonna Foundation as well as contributions from the U.S. Department of Interior Land and Water Conservation Fund and the State of Minnesota, this natural area is preserved.

Muckle Trail The Muckle Trail was named in 1998 in honor of Stan Muckle, a successful Owatonna business owner who generously bequeathed $600,000 to the Owatonna Foundation for acquisition and development of parks.

The Muckle Trail runs along the Straight River in the heart of Owatonna, connecting Morehouse Park to the Buxton Trail.

In 1992, the Bridge Street underpass and horseshoe shaped turn was a gift from Mr. Muckle in memory of his wife, Doretta. His generosity made possible the safe passage of trail-users via a handicapped-accessible walkway from the sidewalk at Bridge Street to the underpass area. It also provided for a beautiful display of annuals and perennials.

In 1996, the City of Owatonna developed another .79 miles of trail from Walnut Avenue to North Street, completing the Muckle Trail.

RULES OF THE ROAD To make sure the trail system is a safe and fun place for all users, please follow the rules of the road: • Stay as near to the right side of the trail as you can while traveling safely • Travel in a consistent and predictable manner.

• Cyclists and in-line skaters should pass on the left when going by others moving in the same direction. Please look ahead and back to make sure the lane is clear before you pull out to pass.

• Cyclists and in-line skaters should give a warning signal by voice, bell or horn before passing.

• Yield when entering/crossing trails or roadways.

• When traveling in a group, please use only half the trail, so you won’t block the traffic flow.

• Pets must be on a leash. You are responsible for cleaning up after your pets. Dispensers with “pooper-scoopers” are available on each trail.

• This is a recreational trail only. Cyclists and in-line skaters must not race or use excessive speed.

The Straight River Trail has two access points – one at 26th Street N.W. and one at North Street. This trail is approximately 2 miles in length.

The latest addition to the Owatonna Parks and Recreation system is the River Springs Water Park. Funded by private donations, the aquatic center was then given to the city to operate.

For decades, you’ve turned to him for advice. Now it’s your turn to return the favor.

He needs my help, but what should I do?

From its earliest days, the City of Owatonna has been grounded in the religious faith of its citizens.

Steele County historians believe that the first church service conducted in Owatonna likely was held in the log cabin of Alfred B. Cornell on a Sunday morning in June 1855. People from a distance came by oxcart and brought their own chairs with them as well as Bibles and hymnals.

The preacher that day was the Rev. Orzo A. Thomas, a Congregational minister. But it was not a denominational service. No churches had yet been organized in Owatonna.

Throughout the years, various communities of faith have found a home in Owatonna. Despite the formation of various denominational groups, the early settlers were remarkably tolerant of other religious beliefs and cooperative with one another. That sense of tolerance and cooperation remains a hallmark of Owatonna today as both established churches and new faith communities continue to flourish.

Owatonna Public Library

For more than 100 years, the citizens of Owatonna and Steele County have been served by the Owatonna Public Library, located at 105 N. Elm Ave. The library offers a wide range of services to adult patrons and children, including wireless Internet.

Children’s Services offers materials and programs for children ages 13 and under. Kids can find their favorite stories, authors and books at the library. There are also DVDs, books on audio cassette and CD, and toys and puzzles available for checkout. For youngsters 13 and under, computers are available where they can type a paper or play with the best computer programs available.

The local history collection in Adult Services offers a variety of resources to Page 68

help in learning about local history or tracing genealogy. Resources include local newspapers from 1868 to the present on microfilm, city and county directories, family histories and biographies, Steele County cemeteries index, city and county reports and proposals, Ancestry.com, passenger lists and immigration resources and the Steele County Historical Society digital photo archive. A local genealogy group holds a program one night a month at the library and is open to all.

In addition to the books, including large print books, the library also carries magazines, compact discs, DVDs and books on CD. The library’s website — www.owatonna.info — lists numerous data bases available to library cardholders. You can also download

ebooks, audiobooks, magazines, music and independent films with an Owatonna Public Library card.

Special programs and events are also held throughout the year, such as story hours for children, book discussions for adults, author programs, a poetry writers group and a monthly movie showing.

The Owatonna Public Library is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Friday and Saturday. The library is closed Sundays May through September.

The library is located at the corner of Elm and Broadway, directly across from the Post Office. Entrances are located on Elm and Broadway and there is a parking lot and bike racks near the Broadway entrance.

The Owatonna Figure Skating Club offers lessons for beginning skaters and advance skaters.

The Owatonna Public Library offers a variety of activities for children and youth throughout the year including story hours and family fun nights.

The Park and Recreation Department and Community Education schedule five teen nights throughout the year. Each teen night is from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Junior High School and includes gym events, games, swimming pool, music and dancing to a DJ service and food.

The River Bend Nature Center in Faribault also offers several nature programs in Owatonna each year. These activities are paid for by the Owatonna Knights of Columbus and sponsored by Owatonna Parks and Recreation.

They are usually offered at Kaplan’s Woods or Mineral Springs Park in Owatonna.

An abundance of parks and trails provide hours of outdoor enjoyment in the Owatonna area.

In rural Steele County, many also take part in hunting and fishing activities.

The Warinski Chalet acts as the trail head and rents cross country ski equipment and has trail maps available.

Ice Skating Outdoor public skating at Morehouse Park has something for everyone. The skating facility offers five hockey rinks (a 60-by-130 small rink has been constructed for children age 11 and under or parent with a child), and a large open skating area (about 100-by- 1,000 feet) all with lights and music.

Skating is open from 3 to 9:30 p.m. Monday through Friday; 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Saturday; and noon to 9:30 p.m.

Bird Watching The county offers excellent opportunities for bird watching, with sightings of more than 200 species recorded. Try these recommended locations: Morehouse/Kaplan’s Woods in Owatonna, Rice Lake State Park: woodland, wetland and grassland species across the park’s diverse habitats; year round opportunities.

Straight River Marsh/Oak Glen Lake: Waterfowl with peak viewing opportunities in spring and fall; viewing can be done from roads. Much of the property is privately owned and cannot be accessed without permission.

A Community of Artists

In 1856, just two years after the founding of the city, a Fourth of July celebration was held in Owatonna. The patriotic fervor evident in that celebration led several residents to form a brass band — the first organized musical group for the young city. Within 10 years, the community had its first musical society, named appropriately the Owatonna Musical Association, which was one of the earliest of such societies in the state. That club and its successors established Owatonna almost since its founding as a place where the arts have played a major role — first with music, then with theater and the visual arts. That tradition of supporting the arts continues to this day.

Music, music, music Owatonna’s rich musical history remains evident today, not only in the music of individual performers or small groups, many of whom who have gone on to fame, but that heritage can also be heard in the music of larger ensembles.

One of the mainstays of the city’s music scene in the summer is the Owatonna Community Band. The band plays four concerts in the city’s Central Park as part of the popular 11@7 concert series. For 11 consecutive Thursdays in the summer months, the park’s bandstand stage is opened up and individuals and groups perform free concerts in the park. The Owatonna Community Band also performs every year on the main stage during the Steele County Free Fair.

Likewise, the week-long fair — the largest free fair in the state of Minnesota — offers a variety of different musical acts, ranging from country to rock to old-time music and more, on its various stages.

All the world’s a stage Owatonna offers numerous opportunities to see live theatrical productions performed on stage throughout the year. Founded in 1966 to bring “culture, art and entertainment to Owatonna and the surrounding communities with active participation by all interested,” Little Theatre of Owatonna now mounts four to five productions a year, with the repertoire ranging from comedy to drama to musical theater.

Making the arts accessible Located on the historic campus of Minnesota’s only state orphanage, the Owatonna Arts Center is a place to discover surprising insights on the world around you and new talents within you.

In 1974, the City of Owatonna purchased the campus of the former Minnesota State Public School for Dependent and Neglected Children and re-christened the site “West Hills,” which serves as an administrative center for the city. The main building, built in 1886, was named to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.

The Owatonna Arts Center, founded as a 501©3 corporation in 1974, makes its home in the main building of the West Hills Complex and has as its mission “to make the arts accessible to the community and to promote creativity.” Under the guidance of artistic director Silvan Durben, the center has become one of the top arts organizations in Greater Minnesota.

The center’s vitality is experienced in the art classes that are offered every quarter for children and adults, exhibitions by regional professional artists, and musical performances ranging from chamber music to folk.

The Owatonna Arts Center entrance is located on the southwest corner of the building on Garden View Lane. Arts Center business hours are 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. Gallery hours are from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. The OAC is closed on Mondays.

Zombie by Color Dash will be held at Morehouse Park. Packet pick up will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. with the dash beginning at 4 p.m. Zombies

by The Color Dash is a non-timed fun run. This is a 6k run. There will be obstacles and Mud and an Apocalypse Road. Zombies will be moving about. Some can Walk, some can fast walk and some can even run. Rather than the typical Flags we are using colorful paint for the Zombies to Tag you with. Get tagged three times and you’re dead. There will be Weapons (Squirt guns) Throughout the course to help freeze the Zombies so you can get passed, but you have to find them. There will also be Prizes (Some Cash prizes) If you can find them and can avoid getting tagged by the un-dead. Steele County History Center announces book signing with Carol Deml Sisterman at 7 p.m. Oct. 24 at the History Center.

The book “Lilacs to Share” written by two Deml sisters, began with a conversation about the buildings on their farm as they existed when the girls where young. The authors, Rose Deml Trochlil and Carol Deml Sisterman, lived on a farm near Owatonna in southern MN in the 1940s and 50s. Neither has lived there since 1959. The book features a lot of local history about Litomysl and Saco areas of Steele County and is a touching memoir of rural life at that time. Books will be available for purchase. Free admission for SCHS members, $2 for nonmembers.

December 6 The Canadian Pacific Holiday Train, North America’s longestrunning rolling food bank fundraiser, will return to Owatonna at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 6 at the railroad crossing at 1145 Park Drive near the Owatonna Bus Company. Now in its 13th year, the Holiday Train made its first visit to Owatonna in 2009. Its stop in Owatonna will be part of a trek to more than 130 cities across eight U.S. states and six Canadian provinces. Each Holiday Train — one in the United States and one in Canada — has 14 rail cars decorated with hundreds of thousands of festive lights. Included is a modified boxcar that has been turned into a travelling stage for performers. Headlining the musical spirit of the season from a specially designed stage on the U.S. train stage will be Wisconsin’s Willy Porter. December 6-7 A victorian Christmas awaits you at the Village of Yesteryear for the annual Christmas in the Village. Santa and Mrs. Claus, the famous fancy cookie sale, music, and more. Children can decorate cookies and make a Christmas “cracker” to take home.

Wassail is served in General Store, and the Dunnell House is lavishly decorated for the holidays. Hours for the celebration are 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

Admission is free, but donations are appreciated.
